Yes, I had to do that to order my first homebase rig. The Yaesu FT-840 and
then also the Yaesu VX-7R. This new one I got from Amazon and no such faxing
was required lol. They didn't even ask me for my call-sign o.O

Yes, I agree that this could very well cause issues with unlicenced operators
spamming the airwaves. My local repeater (GB3EK) just the other day has
temporarily shutdown due to just such a thing.

This is good to know, I was tempted to go for the slightly more expensive DMR
version, the one that actually DOES have DMR I mean... but I haven't used
this stuff for so long I thought I would just go for the cheaper option for
now, and then at a later date have a look at DMR.


Are any of you HAM's still operational and you use such means like EchoLink? 

My local repeater, when it's up, is connected to EchoLink and another that I
forget the name of, and I remember when I used to use it back in the day we
used to have a night a week where we'd have it connect to a random node on
EchoLink and we'd spend hours talking to some people in various other countries
with just our little mobile or homebased rigs. 

That was so much fun although it was equally just as much fun talking to people
nearby without the need for the internet =)
