Woah, sounds like your bash foo is vastly bigger than my bash foo, not to
mention most likely infinitely more complicated, especially when you add the
Perl foo in to the mix as well.

Perl scares me, I looked at it once, I have to deal with some at work, and I
do not enjoy it. Perhaps if/when I can understand it better it might not
scare me so much, although I've heard horror stories about Perl and the more
you understand it, the more you are scared of and don't like it. o.O
