You could do this, But you will need to be putting ALOT of work in re-inventing the wheel. There is no reason you couldn't do any of this in the OSX Posix shells. But alot of work. I can also tell you from having to maintain OSX linux ports for my companies comercial products, you will be chasing random breakiing changes every few OSX updates. Apple loves to randomly move shared libraries, update/add/remove dependencies all without any real rhyme or reason. If Mac hardware is all you have available, I would look into installing Windows or Linux on it if possible, or maybe run a VM on it instead.
