Subj : Welcome.ans discoveries To : All From : Patch #1@142.Wwivnet Date : Tue Apr 30 2024 10:50 am Here is what I was able to deduct regarding the welcome screen when you connect to a WWIV system: Platform: Debian Linux / KDE desktop WWIV latest release Objective: How to replace the default welcome screen/ANSI in WWIV Image Format: ANS Source Location: %root%//gfiles/ Filename: welcome.ans/WELCOME.ANS * Upper-case letters only matter with Linux-based Operating Systems Process: It is considered 'best practice' before modifying any files to back them up to a secured location. For this part of the process, create a new folder in 'gfiles' and name it something like ansi-backup. Then issue the following command: sudo cp welcome.ans /home//wwiv/gfiles/welcome.ans Once the file has been copied succesfully either rename the original file or remove it, whichever you prefer to do. Copy the welcome ANSI that you want on your BBS to the gfiles folder: sudo cp /location/to/file/filename.ans /home//wwiv/gfiles/welcome.ans Open a telnet BBS client of your choice and connect to your system, ensure that the new welcome screen is displayed prior to logging in. After thoughts: I tried to initiate a randomization of the welcome screens that I have by naming them weclome.1, welcome.2 respectfully. I also renamed them to welcome1.ans, welcome2.ans, etc. and that still did not work. Prognosis: Keep researching and experimenting to see how we can incorporate WWIV random welcome screens. More to come soon. --- The Lair of the Wolverine * bbs.theshardforge.cc Home of The Cantankerous Gamer and The Game Exchange "We are NOT your average BBS" p Æ"ê --- WWIVToss v.1.52 * Origin: http://www.weather-station.org * Bel Air, MD -USA (11:1/101.0) .
