Saturday, 21-11-2020 Hey Gophers, I've stumbled across the 1MB club on Hacker News this week. The 1MB club does something that I want to applaud: They are bringing simplicity back to the web and that is the thing that brought me to Gopher in the first place. I am sick and tired of the bloat and all the advertisements on the WWW. I therefore chose the peace and quiet of the Gopherspace. It's been somewhat more than a month now and I am settling in a bit. I read the paper on the gopherized version of the Guardian, I read people's phlogs. Good clean fun and it gives me the feeling back I had when I got my first dial-up internet account in 1996. The 1MB Club tries to do something like it: bring simpleness and real information back to the web. What if we would all do this? Would the web then fall apart into two ways of conveying information? Would there be the 'clean' web for the people who really are after well written information that actually deepens your knowledge, and another side that is as garish and in-your-face as most websites nowadays? Who would prefer using what part? I just do not know. The nice thing that I have learned the past month is that it is still possible to be on the 'net without being just a consumer that needs to be influenced by advertisements all day. I equally find it beautiful that I can just write about something that keeps me busy in a sinple flat file, plop it on the server as-is and update the gophermap. It is so easy and straightforward and there is no messing about with irritating CMSes. It actually makes that I want to write more....The easiness just makes the writing barrier a lot lower than normal. Anyway, have a nice day! Oh yeah, the link to the site: https://1mb.club/ Cheers, Fripster.
