* * * * * It only took 35 years … The first accurate portrayal of a black hole in Hollywood was in the 2014 movie “Interstellar [1]” with help from theoretical physicist Kip Thorne [2], and the images from that movie do appear to match reality [3]. But I find it facinating that astrophysicist Jean-Pierre Luminet [4] generated an image of a black hole in April of 1979 [5]! It's sad to think that Disney's [6] “The Black Hole [7],” which came out in December of 1979, could have not only been the first Hollywood portrayal of a black hole (which it appears it was), but it could have been an accurate portrayal of a black hole.
