Contact Information ******************************************************************************* I. Introduction This is a FAQ/Walkthrough for the Atari 8-bit computer game Ultima I. It contains information on creating characters, a list of commands, a walkthrough, and a mini-review. ******************************************************************************* II. Background Information Your goal is to defeat the evil wizard Mondain. He has created an evil gem that makes him immortal/invincible, so in order to defeat him you must travel backwards in time. In order to use the time machine, you must have four gems. You get these gems by completing quests for kings. ******************************************************************************* III. Getting Started On the screen after the one with the lion, you are given three choices. Press the '0' key to toggle between using one or two disk drives. Press '1' to create a new character. Press '2' to continue your saved game. ******************************************************************************* IV. Creating Your Character You get 90 points to distribute between the five categories. You must choose at least 10 and no more than 20 points for each attribute. If you don't have at least 10 points when you reach intelligence, enter 10. This will reset the numbers so you can go again. Strength Affects power of your attacks. Agility Affects chance of your attack connecting, dodging an enemy's attack, and your success of stealing. Stamina Affects the amount of HP loss when hit. Charisma Affects the amount of gold received when selling. Wisdom Affects probability of a spell working and magic prices. Intelligence Affects power of spell and prices at market. You then choose one of the four races. Press the number you want and hit return. Human Intelligence +5 Elf Agility +5 Dwarf Strength +5 Hobbit Wisdom +10 Strength -5 Then you choose a class. Press the number of the class you want and hit return. Fighter Strength +10 Agility +10 Cleric Wisdom +10 Wizard Intelligence +10 Thief Agility +10 Now enter a name for your character. You may use only letters. Hit return when you are done. If you are satisfied with your choices hit 'Y', otherwise, hit 'N' to clear the data. Once you are done, you will be taken to the previous screen. Hit '2' to begin playing. My Recommendations: If you are going to attack a lot, choose a Dwarf Fighter and use 20 points on Strength, Agility, and Stamina. I feel this is the easiest combination to play the game with. If you are going to use magic, choose a Hobbit Wizard and use 20 points on both Wisdom and Intelligence. Also put 20 on Strength to help out in the early going. If you are going to steal, choose an Elf Thief and use 20 points on both Agility and Charisma. Also use 20 on Strength to help out in the early going. ******************************************************************************* V. Basics Some basic information on how to play the game. Consult the walkthrough for more information. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A. Stats Stats work differently in Ultima than they do in most RPGs. For one they aren't increased by leveling up. They are instead increased by performing quests, visiting shrines, and can even be bought. ............................................................................... 1. HP What it does: HP determines how much damage you can take before you die. How to increase it: Unlike most RPGs, you don't have a max HP. For example in Final Fantasy, you could have a max HP of 100. When you use a heal potion or rest in an inn. You get HP back, but will only be able to have at most 100 till you level up. In Ultima, you only have a current HP. You get a HP increase when you exit a dungeon. The increase is determined by the type and number of monsters you killed while in the dungeon. You get a whopping 3000 HP each time you rescue Princess Cassandra. You can also buy HP from kings. Press 'T' in front of a king, then press 'G' to give him gold. Press 0 - 9, you will give the king ten times that number of gold pieces. Go ahead and press '9' because this gives you the most HP per gold piece. ............................................................................... 2. Food What it does: You must have food. When your food supply hits 0, you die even if you have thousands of HP left. Every two steps in the overworld takes one unit of food. You also use food in cities, castles, and dungeons, but it doesn't drain as quickly. You do not use food in spaceships. How to increase it: You can buy food from Food shops in cities. You can also steal if from a king's storeroom. ............................................................................... 3. Gold What it does: You use it to buy things. Dying and being seduced by a wench reduces your gold to 0. How to increase it: You get gold from killing monsters. You can also find it in chests and coffins in dungeons. You can also get gold by selling weapons and armor. You get 3000 gold pieces every time you rescue Princess Cassandra. ............................................................................... 4. Exp What it does: This increases your level. I you must be level 8 or better in order to beat the game. How to increase it: You get Exp by killing monsters. You get large Exp boosts from rescuing Princess Cassandra and becoming a Space Ace. ............................................................................... 5. Shield What it does: Tells how much damage your spaceship can take before dying. You lose Shield when you are hit by an enemy or collide with a base. When your Shield hits 0, you die. How to increase it: Each type of ship has a max Shield. You recharge your Shield by docking at a base. ............................................................................... 6. Fuel What it does: Allows your spaceship to move. You lose Fuel when you use your engines or hyperjump. How to increase it: Each ship has a max Fuel. You recharge your Fuel by docking at a base. ............................................................................... 7. Strength What it does: Affects power of your attacks. How to increase it: Complete Lord British's, King Barataria's, King Olympus', or White Dragon's quest. You can also visit the Grave of the Lost Soul. ............................................................................... 8. Agility What it does: Affects chance of your attack connecting, dodging an enemy's attack, and your success of stealing. How to increase it: Visit the Pillars of Protection. ............................................................................... 9. Stamina What it does: Affects the amount of HP loss when hit and how much beer you can drink at the pub before getting drunk. How to increase it: Visit the Sign Post. ............................................................................... 10. Charisma What it does: Affects the amount of gold received when selling. How to increase it: Visit the Southern Signpost. ............................................................................... 11. Wisdom What it does: Affects probability of a spell working and magic prices. How to increase it: Visit the Pillar of Qzymandias. ............................................................................... 12. Intelligence What it does: Affects power of spell and prices at market. How to increase it: Visit the Tower of Knowledge. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- B. Overworld This is where you travel from place to place. You move with the joystick. Enemies are rare in the overworld, but when they do attack, press 'A' or the button, then push the joystick in the enemies direction to attack. You need a raft or frigate to cross water. You must have a ranged weapon to attack enemies while you are in a boat. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- C. Cities Cities have shops were you can buy things. While in a city, you use 1 unit of food for about every thirty steps you take. You can try to steal things from the merchants, but if you are caught, the guards will come after you. You can also attack the townsfolk, but the guards don't like that either. ............................................................................... 1. Armour Shop This is where you buy armor. Press 'T' while standing in front of the merchant. Then press 'B' to buy or 'S' to sell. If you are buying, press the first letter of the armor you want to buy. If you are selling press the first letter of the armor you want to sell. He will make you an offer, if you accept press 'Y', otherwise press 'N'. ............................................................................... 2. Arms Shop This is where you buy weapons. Press 'T' while standing in front of the merchant. Press 'B' if you want to buy and 'S' if you want to sell. If you are buying, enter the first two letters of the weapon you want. If you are selling, enter the first two letters of the weapon you want to sell. If you accept his offer press 'Y', otherwise press 'N'. ............................................................................... 3. Food Shop This is where you can buy food. Press 'T' while in front of the merchant, then press 'B' to buy. Enter the number of packs you want, you can only enter a number from 0 - 9. You cannot sell food. ............................................................................... 4. Magic Shop Press 'T' while standing in front of the merchant. Press 'B' to buy spells. Enter the first letter of the spell you want. If it is a ladder spell, you will then be asked which one. Press either 'U' if you want up or 'D' if you want down. You cannot sell spells. ............................................................................... 5. Pub You can buy beer for 1 piece of gold at the pub. The bartender will sometimes tell you a game hint when you do. Be careful that you don't get too drunk, a wench may seduce you and steal all of your gold. You cannot sell anything at a pub. Bartender hints: You best know ... The quest of --Ultima-- is to traverse the lands in search of a time machine. Upon finding such a device, you should go back in time to the days before Mondain created the evil gem and destroy him before its creation. If you do this, you will save the universe, and win the game. You should destroy the evil gem. That over 1000 years ago Mondain the wizard created an evil gem. With this gem, he is immortal and can't be defeated. About space travel and that you must destroy at least 20 enemy vessels to become an ace. That many, if not most lakes and ponds have strong magical powers. The princess will give great reward to the one who saves her, and an extra gift if the player is 8th level or greater. To watch the wench. You should go back in time. This is a great game. ............................................................................... 6. Trans. Shop This is where you buy various modes of transportation. Stand in front of the merchant and press 'T'. Press 'B' to buy. Enter the corresponding number of the one you want. You cannot sell transportation. ............................................................................... 7. Stealing It is up to you if you want to steal. You steal by going around a merchant's counter and pressing 'S'. You are less likely to be caught if you are on the side farthest from the merchant. If you are caught, all of the merchants will put away their wares, you will not be able to steal or buy anything else. The guards will also come after you. If you kill the merchant before trying to steal, it is the same as being caught. If you are caught stealing, just exit a town and re-enter. Everything will be back to normal. It is possible to steal items from a shop that aren't being sold there, this is a great way to get advanced weapons and armour early in the game. Stealing is much easier if you are a Thief and/or if you have high agility. You can only steal from arms, armour, and food shops. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- D. Dungeons Unlike most RPGs, in Ultima the dungeons aren't that important. You only have to go into a dungeon for two reasons: leveling up at the beginning of the game or when completing a quest where you must kill something. Each dungeon has the same enemies on the same levels. In a dungeon the view is in first person. You can only attack an enemy that you are facing. Use the 'I' command often to locate invisible doors and traps. The dungeons are randomly generated at the start of each new game, Special Thanks to x_loto for pointing that out! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- E. Castles Every castle has a king. You can buy HP or offer to go on a quest. Each castle has a princess that you can rescue for a large HP, Exp, and gold boost. Rescue the Princess when you are level 8 or better and she will tell you that you are ready for time travel. She will tell you where to find the Time Machine (you cannot use it until you have all four gems). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- F. Shrines These look like white crosses. Enter shrines to get a boost to one of your attributes. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- G. Death Dying really stinks in Ultima. Dying takes away all of your weapons and gold, and leaves you with only 99 HP and a little food. You will then be resurrected in a random location. If you end up in the water, you won't be able to move. Just keep pressing up until you run out of food and hope you get brought back in a better place. I would recommend hitting reset if you die, especially if you had a lot of gold and HP when you last saved. If you don't want to do that, then try this: Head for the closest town and sell your armor to buy food and a weapon. Head for a dungeon and build up your HP and gold. When you are ready, head for a castle and repeatedly save the princess to gain more HP and gold. If you die in space, either by running out of Fuel or Shield, you cannot be brought back. you have to reset the game and start from where you last saved. ******************************************************************************* VI. Commands A - Attack Use this command to attack with your current weapon. If you are in a city or castle, you must specify a direction to attack with your joystick. B - Board Use this command to board a vehicle. C - Cast This will cast the spell you have ready. You do not have to ready the spell again if you want to cast it again. D - Drop Use this command to drop an item. E - Enter Use this command to enter a city, castle, shrine, or dungeon. F - Fire Use this to fire the weapons on a frigate or air car. G - Get Use this command to pick up items H - Hyperjump Use this command while in a spaceship to hyperjump to the sector your momentum is carrying you. L - Lag time When you press 'L' it tells you to enter a number 0-9, it affects the amount of time between the enemies' attacks and the prompt for your command. Having a higher lag time makes it less likely to accidentally lose a turn to the dreaded "Pass" when you don't press a key fast enough. Special Thanks to x_loto for this info! O - Open Use this command in dungeons to open coffins. Q - Quit and Save Use this command to save your game. It doesn't actually quit the game, you will still be playing. When you do continue your saved game, it will be from the same spot where you saved. You can only save in the overworld. R - Ready Press 'W' to ready a weapon. Then press the first two letters in that weapon's name to ready it. Press 'S' to ready a spell. Press the first letter of the spell's name to ready it. Press 'A' to ready armor. Press the first letter of the armor's name to ready it. You cannot ready spells in cities or castles. You cannot ready armor while in a dungeon. S - Steal Use this command to try to steal items. T - Transact Use this command to buy or sell things from merchants and kings. U - Unlock Use this command to unlock treasure chests or prison doors. You must have the correct key to open prison doors. V - View Change Toggles the view between overhead and first person while in a spaceship. X - X-it (exit) Use this command to leave a vehicle. Z - Stats Use this command to view your stats. Press any key to exit the status screen. Spacebar - Pass Use this command to pass time. It is useful when trying to lure guards from an area. ******************************************************************************* VII. Walkthrough Note: For this walkthrough, I take the "scenic route", visiting and doing every little thing in the game. Many of these places and tasks can be avoided, look in the Quick Game section if you just want to beat the game as quickly as possible. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A. Continent of Ho ............................................................................... 1. Beginning Your Quest You have just started the game. The first thing you should do is to ready your weapon and armor. Press 'R' then 'W' then 'D' then 'A' to ready your dagger. Press 'R' then 'A' then 'L' to ready your leather armour. You are now ready for action. Even though enemies are rare in the overworld, you don't want to be caught unarmed. Now it's time to visit a town. Head east until you are above the mountains (pink stuff), then head north. You should see a white square on the edge of the water. This is the city of Moon. Move over Moon and press 'E' to enter Moon. ............................................................................... 2. City of Moon The big guys around the city are guards. The one that looks like an X is a bard. The one in the pub that looks like a woman is a wench. The small guys behind the shop counters are the merchants. The first thing you should do is buy a sword from the Arms shop. Stand in front of the merchant and press 'T' then 'B' then 'S' then 'W'. Make sure that you ready any equipment as soon as you buy it. You should then buy some extra food. Stand in front of the Food merchant and press 'T' then 'B' then enter a number 0-9. If you are a Thief, this would be a good time to try out your thieving skills. You should be able to steal fairly easily. Try stealing from the Arms shop until you get a Pistol or Phazor. Then try stealing from the Armour shop until you get a Vacuum Suit. If you get caught, quickly run for the exit. Armour - The Armour Shop of Lord Eldric D'Charbonneux Leather Armour Chain Mail Plate Mail Arms - Naughty Nomaan's Weapons Unlimited Dagger Axe Sword Food - Little Karelia's Finnish Grocery Food Packs Magic - Chad the Mad's Magic Shoppe Open Unlock M.M. Steal L. Down L. Up Blink Create Dest Kill Pub - Varg's Tavern Beer Trans. - Super Duper New And Used Transport, Inc. Horse Cart Raft Frigate ............................................................................... 3. Dungeon of Montor You are now ready to enter your first cave. From Moon, head north along the western side of the mountains. You should soon see a city on the left of the screen, ignore it for now. You should see what looks like a door on the eastern side of the mountains. This is a dungeon entrance, ignore this for now as well. Continue north, you should soon see a dungeon on your side of the mountains, this is the dungeon of Montor. Stand over the entrance and press 'E' to enter. Notice that the view has switched to first person. The ladder you see is the exit, press 'K' to climb up when you are ready to leave. You are now going to try to level up. Stay close to the ladder and look around for an enemy. When you see one, press 'A' or the joystick button to attack. When you have killed the enemy, exit the dungeon. Your HP should have increased. Now go back in and find another enemy. Keep doing this until your food is down to around 20. It is important to stay on the first level of the dungeon, this is where the weaker enemies dwell. ............................................................................... 4. City of Paws When your food supply runs low, head southwest of Montor to the city of Paws. The shops here are identical to those of Moon, except that the Trans. only has horses and carts. You should have enough money to buy some Plate Mail (make sure you ready it). Now buy some food packs. When you are finished, head back to Montor and continue to level up. When you run low on food again, come back to Paws and stock up. Now it's time to head to the castle of the Lost King. ............................................................................... 5. Castle of the Lost King From Paws head west a little bit. You should see what looks like a city on the edge of the water. This is the castle of the Lost King. Head to the upper left room and press 'T' while in front of the king. He will ask if you offer gold or services. Press 'G' to give him gold, in return he will give you HP. Press 'S' to offer services. He will give you a quest. He wants you to kill a Gelantinous Cube. Don't offer him your services again until you have completed his quest. otherwise he will become annoyed and sic his guards on you. Notice the jester in the throne room. Be careful around him, he will steal your unequipped weapons. You won't be given a message when he does, you will have to check your stats to be sure. You may have noticed rooms with the titles Arms, Armour, and Food. These are the king's storerooms. It is possible to steal from these rooms, but be wary of getting caught, these guards are very strong. You may have noticed a woman in the prison to the lower left. This is Princess Cassandra. You can rescue her by killing the jester and grabbing the key. Then go to the front of her sell and press 'U' to unlock it. As soon as you kill the jester, the guards will come after you. The trick is to get by the two guards in the center. You have to run around the columns, using the princess as a shield. If you make it out of the castle, she will reward you with 3000 HP, 3000 gold, and 3000 EXP. You should only try this if you have at least 1000 HP. Now for the best part, you can re-enter the castle and do it again! You can also use some of your gold to buy even more HP from the king. Note: Sometimes the key the jester drops doesn't work. If this happens, just exit the castle and try again. Press 'Z' and check your inventory to see what cell the key goes to, the Princess is in cell # 2. Also keep in mind that while the guards won't attack Cassandra, you can, so make sure you don't accidentally kill her. Now head west of the castle of the Lost King keeping near the edge of the water. You should see a city, this is Yew. ............................................................................... 6. City of Yew This city is exactly the same as Moon. Head to the magic shop and buy four L. Up spells and four L. Down spells. Buy plenty of food. Also buy a frigate from the Trans. shop. We are now going on a quick tour of the north. Exit the city and step onto the frigate. Press 'B' to board. ............................................................................... 7. Dungeon of Perinia Go north along the west coast. You should see a dungeon on your right. This is the dungeon of Perinia. ............................................................................... 8. Pillars of Protection Continue going north, then east hugging the coast. You should see an island with a cross on it. Move your frigate next to the island and press 'X' to exit the frigate. Now move onto the cross and press 'E' to enter. Your agility will be increased. You can enter a landmark as many times as you want, but you can't enter the same landmark twice in a row. Now board your frigate and head east. ............................................................................... 9. Unholy Hole You will see a dungeon on the mainland. This is the Unholy Hole. Continue east along the coast. ............................................................................... 10. Tower of Knowledge You should bump into another island with a cross on it. This is the Tower of Knowledge. Enter the tower to raise Intelligence. Now board your frigate and head south. ............................................................................... 11. City of Grey You should see a town on the mainland. This is the city of Grey. This town is identical to Moon. Buy some food and then leave. ............................................................................... 12. Mines of Mt. Drash Southwest of Grey are the mines of Mt. Drash. ............................................................................... 13. Castle of Lord British Board your frigate and head south of Grey. You should come across a city on the coast. This is the city of Moon, the first city you visited. Now head west. You should see a town and castle next to each other. These are the city of Britain and the castle of Lord British. Enter the castle first. Notice that Princess Cassandra is imprisoned here too. Save her again for another huge boost. Now re-enter the castle and offer your services to the king. He will give you a quest. He wants you to find the Tower of Knowledge. Unfortunately, your first visit doesn't count because you hadn't been given the quest yet. Now leave and head for Britain. ............................................................................... 14. City of Britain Britain is the same as Moon except for the Arms shop. Stock up on food if necessary. Arms - Naughty Nomaan's Weapons Unlimited Mace Ropes & Spikes ............................................................................... 15. Mondain's Gate to Hell On the island west of Britain is Mondain's Gate to Hell. ............................................................................... 16. Dungeon of Doubt Head back east to Moon and board your frigate. Head South around the coast. You will see a dungeon. This is the dungeon of Doubt. ............................................................................... 17. City of Tune Continue south until you see a city. This is the city of Tune. Tune is the same as Britain except for the Armour shop and Trans Shop. Buy the Reflect Suit and ready it, this is the most powerful armor in the game. Buy some food and head back to your frigate. Armour - The Armour Shop of Lord Eldric D'Charbonneux Leather Armour Chain Mail Plate Mail Vacuum Suit Reflect Suit ............................................................................... 18. Deaths Awakening Now head south along the coast, then go west. You will see a dungeon, this is Deaths Awakening. ............................................................................... 19. City of Montor Continue west then north and east along the coast until you come to a city. This is the city of Montor. Montor is the same as Tune except that the Trans. shop has rafts and frigates. ............................................................................... 20. Mines of Mt. Drash Hop back on your frigate and head west. You will see a dungeon, this is the Mines of Mt. Drash. ............................................................................... 21. City of Fawn West of the Mines of Mt. Drash is the city of Fawn. Fawn is identical to Tune. ............................................................................... 22. The Lost Caverns Head west then north along the coast. You will see a dungeon on your right. This is the Lost Caverns. ............................................................................... 23. Wrapping Up Continent I You have now seen every point of interest on Continent I, so now it is time to wrap things up. First complete Lord British's quest. Head to the Tower of Knowledge (stopping at the Pillars of Protection for additional Agility). You will get more Intelligence and will see a message saying that a quest has been completed. Now head back to Lord British's Castle. Press 'T' in front of the king. He will give you a Strength increase for completing his quest. Offer him your services and he will tell you to find the Tower of Knowledge again. Visit the Pillars of Protection first, then the Tower of Knowledge, then Lord British. Keep doing this to greatly increase your stats. Save Princess Cassandra a few more times as well. Now you should be ready to complete the Lost King's quest. Make sure you have at least two L. Down spells and three L. Up spells. Now head to the dungeon of Montor. Cast L. Down by first readying it by pressing 'R' then 'S' then 'L' then 'D'. Then press 'C' to cast it. This will create a ladder going down, press 'K' to go down. Now do it again. You should be on the third level of the dungeon, this is where Gelantinous Cubes hang out. They look like large see-through walls. As soon as you kill one, use L. Up spells to make your way to the surface. Now head west to the Lost King's castle. Talk to him to receive your reward, a White Gem. He will also give you permission to take nine items from his storerooms. Make sure you use the G)et command, NOT S)teal, otherwise you will still be considered stealing(even though you have permission!) Special Thanks to x_loto for pointing this out. You can continue to complete quests and visit the Tower of Knowledge and Pillars of Protection, and rescue the princess as many times as you want. You should now be at least Level 4 and have over 10,000 HP. Head to Moon and go to the Trans. Shop, there are now two new forms of transport Air Car and Shtl. The Air Car is a land vehicle. The Shtl. is a space ship. Unlike other types of transport, you can only own one shuttle. Buy one. Notice that the Armour shop now sells Vacuum and Reflect Suits and that the Arms shop sells Wands and Bows and Arrows. Buy the Bow and Arrows, this is a ranged weapon. Now let's get ready to blast off into outer space! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- B. Outer Space Note: You can become a Space Ace at any time once you have a shuttle, but since you must become one to finish the game, you might as well do it now. Head out of the city. SAVE YOUR GAME NOW. If you die in space, you cannot be brought back to life. Now step onto your spaceship. Press 'B' to board. After the countdown you will lift off. Press left and right to turn your ship. Press up to thrust forward and press down to fire the retro rockets and move backwards. You will see a base, your planet, and the sun. First dock with the base to exchange ships. You want to line up with one of the two open ports, look at the two docked ships. Come to a stop. Then line up with the port by turning left and right, then hitting the thrusters once, then stopping with the retros. Once you are lined up, come in slowly to dock. If you succeed, you will get a message that says DOCKED WELCOME TO BASE. If you screw up it will say CRUNCH and you will lose shield power or even be destroyed. Ships Shuttle (starting ship) Shields 1000 Fuel 1000 Phantom (left ship) Shields 100 Fuel 5000 Star Cruzer (bottom ship) Shields 5000 Fuel 1000 Press the joystick down to choose the Star Cruzer, it has the best shields. Press down on the joystick to activate your retro rockets and back away from the base. Here is a map of space, it may seem huge, but is in reality a 9x9 grid containing 81 sectors. The map wraps around, if you go off the edge you will end up on the opposite side. If you go 9 sectors in any single direction, you will end up where you started. There are seven bases in space. There are 15 enemy sectors each with three fighters for a grand total of 45 enemy ships, you only need to take out 20 to become a Space Ace. Map - - - - - - - - - - - - - ^ - - - - - ^ ^ - ^ - - - - - - - - B - ^ ^ - - B B ^ H - ^ - - - ^ ^ - ^ - - - - - ^ - - B ^ ^ - - - B - - ^ B - - - - - - - - - - - - Key H = Home sector (has a Base too) B = Base ^ = Enemy - = Empty Now it is time to seek out and destroy 20 enemies. Press 'I' to do a sector scan. It will show up on the lower left of the screen. 'B' is a sector with a base, '-' is empty space, '^' is an enemy. Your current sector is the one in the middle. Turn your ship so it is pointing to a sector with enemies. Press up to apply thrust. Now press 'V' to switch views. Press 'H' to hyperjump to the adjacent sector (looks like Lord British is a huge fan of Star Raiders). You can hyperjump in any direction, even diagonal, just make sure your momentum is taking you in the direction of the sector you want to go to. Now you are in an enemy sector, the enemies look like Zylon Fighters from Star Raiders. Line up the crosshairs with an enemy and press the button to fire, it takes only one hit to destroy it. There are three enemies per sector. You cannot switch views while there are enemies in your sector, but you can hyperjump. Switch back to the overhead view, do a sector scan, and find some more enemies. Dock with a base if you are low on shields or fuel. Make sure that you keep track of where you have gone so you can find your way back. Once you have become a Space Ace, head back to your home sector. Dock with the base and switch back to the shuttle. Now fly into the planet to return home. You will receive a huge EXP bonus. My Recommendation: 1. Go south and destroy the enemies. 2. Go southeast (diagonal hyperjump) and destroy the enemies. 3. Go east and destroy the enemies. 4. Go southwest (diagonal hyperjump) and refuel. 5. Go west and destroy the enemies. 6. Go west three sectors and refuel. 7. Go north and destroy the enemies. 8. Go north and destroy the enemies. 9. Go east and destroy the enemies. 10. Go northeast (diagonal hyperjump) and destroy the enemies. 11. Go east, dock and get your shuttle, then fly home. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- C. (I just made these up, you don't get anything special for completing them.) ............................................................................... 1. Use Phantom in Space Use the Phantom to become a Space Ace. You only have 100 Shield, so one hit from an enemy will kill you. ............................................................................... 2. 45 enemy space ships Use any ship and kill all 45 enemy fighters without returning to your planet. You are allowed to refuel at bases. ............................................................................... 3. Single Rescue Only rescue Princess Cassandra once, after you are at level 8 so you can get the Time Machine. This means you will have to level up the "real" way, by killing monsters in the dungeons. ............................................................................... 4. No Ladder Spells Don't use a single ladder spell. You have to make your way all the way down to the target level, complete the quest, then hike back out. ............................................................................... 5. Explore Every Dungeon Make your way to the bottom floor and back of every single dungeon in the game without using any ladder spells. ******************************************************************************* VIII. Game Review This is a great game. I would recommend that anyone with an Atari 8-bit computer get this game. Pros - This is a fun game and a lot more complex than most Atari 8-bit computer games. - It is kind of nice to be able to explore the overworld in an RPG without having to stop and fight monsters every five steps. - I love this game's humor, like how if you try to sell something to the Super Duper New And Used Transport, Inc., he will tell you they don't deal in used goods, or if you try to move a frigate onto land, it will say that frigates like water. - The place names are very imaginative. Cons - The frame rate is terrible. - The cities lack variety, they all look the same and sell pretty much the same items. - This game is way too easy. ******************************************************************************* XIV.
