------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------- [ DONKEY KONG FAQ/WALKTHROUGH]--------------------- ---------------------------------[by Ice Queen Zero]--------------------------- -------------------------------------[ Atari 7800 ]---------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- o---------------------o INTRODUCTION o---------------------o Nintendo finally received its bragging rights when this game came out, it made Nintendo a force to be reckoned with when it came to America shores. Not only that, this game introduced us to a historic icon figure by the name of Mario although he was given the name Jumpman in this game. It wasn't until the sequel that Mario got his name and it was inspired by the name of Nintendo's landlord. After Donkey Kong Jr., Mario's career took off like a shot. As for Donkey Kong himself, he went on to star in one more early arcade game called Donkey Kong 3 then he up and vanished; never to be heard again until 1994 for the Gameboy. His grandson of the same name went on to become a star in his own right with the Donkey Kong Country series. The game, Donkey Kong, originally came out for the arcades in 1981 and has been ported to several small systems and computers. Some were perfect ports but a few others deviated from the formula like the NES version (which the 7800 port is loosely based off of). Instead of going through added levels each playthru, all levels are played in one specific order with the pie factory being cut from the game completely. o---------------------o OVERVIEW o---------------------o As Mario aka Jumpman, your goal is to go through 3 levels of doging obstacles like fire, barrels, and springs to rescue your girlfried Pauline from the hands of the evil Donkey Kong. You must maneuver through a rampway level, elevator level, and the ultimate showdown with Donkey Kong himself. o---------------------o DISCLAIMER o---------------------o Donkey Kong and its characters are trademarks of Nintendo and all copyrights belong to them. This FAQ/Walkthrough is the sole copyright of Ice Queen Zero and cannot be put on other sites or posted without given permission nor can it be reproduced w/o proper consent. o---------------------o MAIN CHARACTERS o---------------------o Mario AKA Jumpman The hero of the game. His girlfriend Pauline has been kidnapped and he must go out and save her. Pauline She's been kidnapped by Donkey Kong and she awaits your rescue this is Mario's girlfriend long before he and n' younger brother, Luigi met Princess Toadstool aka Princess Peach. Unfortunately, she was forgotten after this game came out. That was until Donkey Kong for GameBoy came out but alas she's gone again. Donkey Kong He's big he's bad, he's the almighty Donkey Kong, he throws barrels, and some springboards at you. If you make it to level 3. He awaits your challenge. o---------------------o ENEMIES o---------------------o Barrel Only appearing in level 1. Donkey Kong sends these obstacles rolling at you. Sometimes they'll roll till it reaches the end of the ramp then roll down the next. At other times, they also roll down a ladder. They'll keep rolling till they hit the oil barrel . Which will catch on fire at the top of it and form a flame being. The first barrel thrown will automatically fall to the bottom. Flame In the first level, these are formed when the barrel reaches the oil can located on the lower-left side of the level. But other times they form every few seconds and chase you. Good thing is that these flames are not very smart. You can fake 'em out easily. If you grab a hammer, the flames will turn blue and will be ready to be destroyed. Springboard These things only appear in the level with the elevators. They will bounce 3 times at the top levl then fall down to the bottom of the screen before the next one appears. o---------------------o OPTIONS o---------------------o There are 3 levels of gameplay to choose from: Standard, Advanced, and Expert. You can also choose to have a 1 or 2 player game. Standard starts you off at difficulty one Advanced starts you off at difficulty two Expert starts you off at difficulty three o---------------------o CONTROLS o---------------------o Button 1 or 2 will make Mario jump. Left and right will move Mario in that direction Up and down makes Mario climb up or down the ladders. o---------------------o QUICK NOTES o---------------------o Mario can die if he falls from a certain distance, gets crushed by the elevator or touches any of the enemies in the level. He can also die if time runs out on the clock. There are many objects located throughout the levels that gives Mario bonus pts if he touches them. The hammer lasts for 10 seconds when you grab it. Use it to destroy enemies who get in your way but be warned that they can still kill you if you are touched when the hammer is in the wrong position. The game repeats after beating the pegs level with harder difficulty. You score points by jumping over enemies, grabing the items, beating enemies with the hammer, grabbing the pegs, and beating the level. o---------------------o WALKTHROUGH o---------------------o Difficulty 1 Strategy: Standard. Barrel: The blue barrels become flames when they reach the oil can. Donkey Kong always starts out by throwing a blue barrel. The other barrels including extra blue ones will roll down the girders and sometimes they'll try to play a nasty trick on you by coming down the ladders. Be on very high alert for those. They can be very slick after all. Some levels, Donkey Kong will cheat and throw barrels down at an ackward angle. Springboard: This is way too easy. First you go up the elevator, hop across the top, go down the other elevator and watch out for the springboard. Jump past it as it fall to the ground and you are almost home free if you avoided the flame too. Walk towards Donkey Kong a split second after he send a springboard and make a break for the ladder. The springboard should miss when you are near the top. Beware though that unlike the NES version, the hit detection is bigger so it is easier for the springboards to hit you. Note: There is a major shortcut in this level. Start off by climbing to the top then jump onto the rising elevator and jump to the right. Be sure that there is no flame up there with you before you make your jumps. Next, wait for a falling elevator to come down and jump on it, then jump right immediately to land on a platform next to the ladder. Now you should just head left and let the spring board pass by and quickly climb the ladder before a new one appears. You just beat the level. Pegs: The object of this level is to avoid the flames and gather all the pegs and success will send Donkey Kong falling to his doom. It's not as easy as it looks as sometimes those bastard flames will get on your nerves. Hang in there though. Difficulty 2 Strategy: Advanced Strategy See you next time Difficulty 3 and Up strategy: Expert See you next time. o---------------------o CREDITS o---------------------o Nintendo for making this game.
