The name tells it all. 20 years ago, the series was born to a huge television reception in Japan. Although it wasn't first series to talk about war in a futuristic setting, it was the first series which told the tragic and humane side of war, the story which told of the bravery and loyalty of both warring sides, the fear the pilots face with every battle, the decisions and betrayals by friends and friendships and love between enemies. And thanks to Bandai, we can play a "What if?" situation game where YOU control the destinies of the opposing forces, through wit, skill, and lots of accurate planning and shrewdness you will wade through encounter after encounter in the most realistic Gundam war simulation yet...... This game is one of the finest Gundam games to ever grace the Saturn, and with all due respect Bandai has brought an +alpha version to the aging Playstation with the same level of difficulty that had many inexperienced people groping for breath under multiple enemy attacks. What's more, this time round there is not only an added scenario, but with a third force which quite naturally makes it even more challanging for player and AI alike, as each enemy force has its own methods of dealing with neighbouring territories. And after completing the main game you are given the chance to play through ALL the third-parties under their own command, ranging from easy to near impossible levels of difficulty. Difficulty wise, this game is hard. In fact I had to replay 3 times before I could complete the main scenario mainly the first two times I was still gropign to understand all the controls and commands and managing resources at the same time. That said, once you manage to understand everything which makes this game click, you still have to depend on skill and strategy to win the game. Definately NOT a no- brainer action game for people without patience. As for this guide, I will be mainly posting about the strategies and methods to win the main scenario, plus the projected route paths which you will be facing in the game. Although I wanted to translate all the menus, I realised that the entire manual IS talking about the menus only, so doing a 42-page translation isn't in my plans for the near future, sorry. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> \ \ \ 4. STRATEGIES: STRATEGY PHASE \ \ \ <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< - Always carry out the plans once they are suggested, because it will allow you to attack the Special Areas held by the enemy/enemies. - Be prudent on your spending. You should always a) Top up the Intelligence sector (it goes down every turn) b) Increase your tech level as much as possible (expensive later on) c) Keep relations with Organizations to Very Close as much as possible (increases your trade) d) Build units that do not take up too much resources and time - Make sure that all areas that adjoin enemy areas are protected. - The enemy reacts to your movements. If you send troops to empty areas, chances are the enemy will reinforce with at least a stack of MS or at least an Air/Space unit. - You can only have a maximum of 200 units in the game, so make sure not to overproduce, or else the new units will be waiting stupidly within your factories. - Try to hem in the enemies (by starting and stalling a battle in the middle of the supply route) to prevent a countless stream of reinforcements. This is absolutely essential early on in the game. - Remember to assign Characters to units, even if the unit they are piloting blows up, you can still use that character, unless he/she dies in the course of the story. - Remember to move units that have finished production to designated areas. - You can halve the time required to complete the construction of new units by supplying cash one more time after you start the process. - Construct useful MS/MA once you are able to. Other units which are not important can be built later (if just to complete your collection). - Everything that you finish construction starts off in Jabero. Be sure to move them to useful locations. Space units should be sent up once the P-Jabero area is conquered. - You only have 100 turns for the first part, and things tend to slow down due to long development times once you get to the middle of the part, so know how to effectively place your units. - Dispose of any weak units later on. Although your Earth campaign should be complete later on you should not dispose of all land units (but remember to send up space-usable MS!) post-Jabero attack, since there is a second part later on. - In the second part, concentrate on one enemy first, and keep a truce with another, although it will only strengthen the second, but at least you don't have to fight a war on 6 fronts. - Either that (if you have the spare cash for such things) or you can try the other way, which is to hem in one side at its Home Base, then ZOCing the last unit in that area with all energy depleted, forcing it out of any actions until you decide to destroy it, allowing you to concentrate fully on the other enemy. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> \ \ \ 5. STRATEGIES - ATTACK PHASE \ \ \ <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< - Remember to always stack up 3 units of the same kind. Your attack increases three-fold this way. - You can have at most 6 stacks hitting on one enemy stack at one time. - Carrier ships cannot drop off units after moving. - Try to draw the attack if possible with carrier ships that can withstand a full round of bashing. - You must always start with high numerical advantage. 3 Fly Manthas can never kill off a single Zaku I, let alone a stack of them. - Bog down a battle if you think you cannot win. This way the enemy cannot go through that area/produce new units (they can still reinforce, but so can you) - You can move off the map to another enemy area to hem them in/prevent reinforcements next turn by going into the enemy map entry point (the red/green hexes) - You only have 5 phases per game turn. - Characters who manage to destroy enemy character units earn Rank points. Once they reach a certain amount you can increase their rank. - Use the ZOC (Zone of Control) effect to block off enemies who have moved off the conquerable points. - Make sure your supply line is uninterrupted from your entry location to the enemy lines. Same for enemies, if the line is disrupted (white lines/red instead of blue) you will not be able to recover any supplies or HP (you can still recover them inside carriers though) - Use the help of the White Base/Albion to trim down the number of enemy characters. This will be very useful late on. - Be careful with movement ranges of ground troops. A trek through mountains can take up to 5 turns, and the fact that units that cannot move in space will be only a hinderance if you send them up. - Enemy units will react depending on your units, if you move into their attacking range with carriers or with weak units, they will move forward to attack. - You win (when attacking) by either killing off all enemies, or taking control of all conquerable points within the map. You win (when defending) by killing off all enemies. - You can also do hit and run by entering battle, retreating, and entering battle once more the next turn. This will also stop enemy reinforcements. - Finally, never, NEVER let the computer AI control for you. It sucks terribly, and will cause you to lose the battle, or win with heavy casulties. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> \ \ \ 6. PART 1 - PROJECTED PATH \ \ \ <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Do realise that this is a PROJECTED path. Things which are supposed to happen normally happen, but do not think that they will be in order. Some events will happen when others do not, so like if you disband the White Base early you will never get the events which relate to them. Also individual side-story events will happen once the requirements are met, not necessarily when the time alloted to it happens. So the bottom line is, follow this chart, since it is as accurate as it can be, but when things happen (or not) don't grumble. Possibly you did something which either triggered the event or that a past action cancelled out the event. **E.F. has much more events than the Zeon side, so it's perfectly normal for the game to drag, also partially because as the player you will find yourself running out of unit space once you get to Turn 5 and above. That and the fact that the main storyline events concerning the White Base and others come very late (they appear in Odessa around Turn 35!!) But do remember that you really have to set your units correctly, and on top of that, pray hard that the enemies don't do anything stupid to wreck your planning. I will list out the major events within the turns (as stated when you complete or lose) with major thanks to Dengeki Playstation magazine. This goes to show that the Japanese are really madmen when it comes to things like this ^^; [Turn 1] - Battle Line formed, Earth Federation counterattack starts - V Battle Plan started [Turn 2] - SaberFish production complete [Turn 3] - Beijing Attack Plan started - Core Block System production complete [Turn 4] [Turn 5] - Bingin Plan started - Beijing Conquered - Guntank production completed [Turn 6] - Hawaii Attack Plan Started ============== Turn 1~6...... ============== Production Plans: ----------------- All the main battles will occur on Earth. The idea is to hit hard and fast, so as to prevent the enemy from producing enough units to reinforce the fighting areas. For the first 3 turns the main production lines will be Fly Manthas. But after turn 4 lots of flying enemies will appear, so halve your production with Core Fighters. From turn 5 and on you will have to take note of your total units, as you will probably run out of space for later much-need units (Guntanks). - Jabero -------- Send about 3~6 units into Africa, then throw the remaining forces into Mexico. As quickly as possible hit on America to split California and New York so prevent interlinking between the two. - Belfast --------- Send all the starting units into Atlantic Ocean 1, to prevent New York forces from attacking. 10 of them wll be a good enough deterrant. After that the remaning turns send the new reinforcements into Greenland and then Canada 1 via Atlantic Ocean 1. - Madras -------- Send all units into India, and post-India send everyone into the attack of China, followed by Beijing. Follow that up by moving as quickly into Russia 2. - Trinity --------- Attack Australia 1 together with the units stationed in Astralia 2. After that move into Japan and stay there. The latter half of the turns send the units into the Pacific Ocean and Indonesia in anticipation of the attack on Hawaii. - Space ------- Start off by taking the areas beside Luna 2. After that take over all the entry points, which you can use to send Core Fighers down to Earth. Because you start the Odessa attack so early on, there's no way to prevent the Nuclear Missile from firing, so the only way to prevent losses is to send in a single Core Fighter to run for the first turn while triggering the Nuclear Missile incident, then sending in all your forces the next to dispose of the remaining enemies. - Trinity, Jabero ----------------- Trinity units should go through Indonesia and Japan to attack Hawaii, and after that California. You start off with an opposing force quite hemmed in, but on the downside all your units are spread out through all the areas you start off with, be it victory or defeat. A couple of good things to note are that a) Your tech levels are automatically increased a little b) The planned units still under construction will be complete. c) ALL new enemy forces that appear start off their first 5 turns producing and deploying, and will not move an inch towards your/enemy areas even if they are empty. d) You get a free new enemy plan depending on the speed of completion for Part 1.
