N.B= My Dreamcast has broken down during the course of writing this FAQ. Unfortunately, until I buy a new Dreamcast there's no way for me to finish it. I apologize to all my readers for having to place this guide on hold until I manage to get a new Dreamcast. Thanks for your patience. If you have any questions about completing the missions (probably Advanced 15 in particular) then you can email me at the usual address. v0.6b 15/4/11 ------------- -Updated my contact information. This guide will not be updated in the future. I haven't played OutTrigger since 2003 and don't intend to play it any time soon! --------------- 1)Introduction ---------------- Hello and welcome to what I hope to be the Ultimate FAQ and Walkthrough for OutTrigger. It will have basic tips on playing the game, as well as what, let's face it, everyone looks at FAQs for- the way to beat the more difficult levels. Every mission is detailed in a concise way, with just the right amount of humour to stop you from getting bored. ;) OutTrigger is a first person shooter, released for the Dreamcast near the end of its lifespan. It's more arcadey than PC variants like Quake 3 Arena. It's also a lot of fun. For the record, my copy of OutTrigger cost £10! Bargain! Whenever I read an FAQ, I hate having to sift through endless piles of garbage to get to the information I want. Do you really want to read my review of OutTrigger when you can see it on half a dozen websites? That's why I've added codes for each of the main sections. To get to these, type the code into the Search box. Isn't that great! I'm also assuming that you have read the manual for this game. I could waste bandwidth and time by typing large sections of the manual up again, but I'm going to concentrate on the actual gameplay rather than telling you what buttons to press in order to do things. If you come across something horribly wrong in my FAQ, then don't hesitate to email me and tell me I'm an idiot. I won't mind, really. Unless you are being really petty 'It's Close Quarter not Close QuarterS!' in that case, I'll probably flame you. Enjoy the FAQ, and please send me an email if you thought it was good. I'd really appreciate it. -Alan N.B. I've been playing the European (PAL) version of OutTrigger. Some aspects in the Japanese or American versions may vary. If there are differences, please email me with details. The European version of OutTrigger does not support online play, but you can always use sections 2 and 3 for help on playing online --------------------------------------- 2)A Basic Guide to First Person Shooters BASC-43 --------------------------------------- New to the world of the FPS? Don't worry, we've all been there once. Here are a few basic tips that could save your ass...err, life, in combat situations. *Never, EVER stop moving! This might sound like common sense, but you'd be surprised how many people will sit there lining up shots. Which is easier to hit- a moving target, or one standing stock still waiting to be shot? We've all made harder decisions than this. So whatever you do, don't stop moving and you'll be a much more difficult to hit. *Learn how to Strafe, or else! An easy way to tell an absolute beginner from someone who's played these type of games before is that the 'newbie' will never move from side to side, preferring to hold forward and turn left and right to move. But the problem is, it becomes very difficult to keep a target in your sights. You also look like a fool. So use every direction of movement available and make yourself harder to hit once again. You can dodge rocket attacks etc. by strafing too. *Master the Circle Strafe! Circle strafing involves a combination of strafing and turning around your opponent, keeping them in your sights all the time and moving in a circle around them. This makes it more difficult for the enemy to target you, and easier for you to target them. Talk about killing two birds with one stone. *Keep Your Health Topped Up! To put it simply... you don't take a tasty apple pie out of the oven without gloves on, right? The same goes for combat... sort of. Make sure you've got enough health and armour to last in a firefight, otherwise you may as well run around with a 'Shoot Me' sign on your back. *Know When You're Beaten! Cowards run away from a fight, but smart cowards retreat, heal up and then come back in to kill whoever made them look like a coward. If you run in guns blazing and don't think before you shoot, you'll end up in a body bag. *Use the Terrain to your Advantage! What, did you think those pillars were there for aesthetic reasons? Use objects like statues and pillars to soak up enemy fire, then pop up while they're reloading. Ambushing people on stairs can also be hilarious. Why not trap people in a corner, then fire your heaviest weapons at them? *When All Else Fails... Rip out your opponent's controllers, hit them, reset the game if you're about to lose... after all, this is only a game. Remember to take a break every hour or so, unless you want square eyes. []_[] --------------------------------------- 3)OutTrigger Specific Strategies OT-SS65 --------------------------------------- Whilst strictly speaking, OutTrigger is a First Person Shooter (although you could play it as a Third Person Shooter if you really wanted to) it has a number of aspects which set it apart from other shooting games on the market. ------------------------------------------------------ Getting a Keyboard and Mouse...and Using them! OT-SSKB ---------------------------------------------------- Although you can use a controller to move around in OutTrigger, a keyboard and mouse system is far better. By using the mouse to look around, and the keyboard to control movement, you'll be able to look around far easier than joypad users will ever manage. My key bindings are normally as follows: Arrow Keys- Move forward, backward, left and right respectively. Mouse- Look Mouse L- Shoot Mouse R- Jump Mouse S (Side Button)- Switch Weapons Mouse Wheel- No Use. What a waste! Using these bindings you can strafe to your heart's content, and once you get used to them I'm sure you'll agree with me that they are better than a joypad. On the controller, things are more complicated. I haven't played extensively with the controller, but here would be my recommended bindings: Analogue Stick- Look D-Pad-Cycle Weapons Y-Move Forward A-Move Backward X-Strafe Left B-Strafe Right L-Shoot R-Jump This is pretty much the same as the 'D' setup ingame. This way, you can move and shoot without having to move your hand. It might cause some Crazy-Taxi style wrist cramping, but you'll get used to it. Whatever you do, DON'T use the A,B or C setups. They make things far too difficult to control. If you're an octopus or space alien with more than 3 arms or tentacles, maybe it's possible, but control method D is the best. You may have noticed the absense of a 'change view' button in my keyboard and mouse config. Why bind something you're never going to use? It's much more difficult to aim in a 3rd person view. ----------------------------------------------------- Different Characters have Different Strengths OT-SSC3 ----------------------------------------------------- This feature was abandoned from Quake 3 Arena, probably with good reason, but it's in OutTrigger nonetheless. The different characters and their abilities are listed below: Jay Aragaki ----------- Jay is OutTrigger's 'average Joe.' All of his stats are balanced, none are particularly impressive. He gets a 4/10 for his hair. One question though- how many British people do you know that are called Aragaki? Submachine Gun- Average firing rate, average damage. There are better starting weapons available, the question is 'why bother'? Grenade- Bounces off things and has a wide blast radius. How could it possibly not be cool? Just like in the movies! Choose it. At least, until you get one of the grenade launchers. Rocket Launcher- Fires fast firing rockets, but they don't do a whole lot of damage. I wouldn't bother if I were you. It also looks like you're holding a Dyson vacuum cleaner. Alain Ciel ---------- Apart from having the best name in the game (ha ha) Alain is exactly the same as Jay. Except his hair is even worse and gets a 3/10. Lina Miyagi ----------- Lina is quite pretty as far as game characters go, wears her bra on top of her clothes (some kind of bizarre fashion statement perhaps?) And has decent, 8/10 hair. She is the stereotypical 'weak but speedy' character. Submachine Gun- It's an Uzi, so it's the coolest looking gun by default. You can kill someone very quickly due to its rapid fire rate. You know you want it. Motion Sensor Bomb- While it may seem initially useless (like it did to me) the Motion Sensor Bombs are ideal for setting traps. If you can remember where you put them, of course. They do a ton of damage and are useful in VS mode without a doubt. Just don't get hit by your own bombs, or you'll look like a fool 55mm Rifle- A sniper rifle you can't snipe with- but the rockets are fast firing. You'll notice that in deathmatch your rockets will do a pathetic amount of damage, so it's not recommended for VS mode. Talon Grant ----------- The worst named character in OutTrigger (although you wouldn't say it to his face) Talon makes up for his silly name with the power of his weapons, which is above average, and the awesomeness of his hair, which is more powerful than any weapon. 10/10 for hair! 3 Way Laser Gun- It bounces off walls and turns the opponents into mush. The best machinegun by far, and the speed difference doesn't matter. The only problem is that it can cause deaths on hostage defending levels, so stick to the Uzi for those. Heavy Grenade- Sheer comedy value as the grenade takes off damage for hitting someone in the face, then more damage as it explodes, PLUS it slows down the opponents! They are massive though and don't bounce off walls, so it's a toss up between this and Jay's grenade. Railgun- The most powerful rocket when it hits directly, but there's a wider blast radius on an exploding sausage. Plus, with those trails, the enemy can see you from a mile away. 'Rocket spammers' (people who launch rocket after rocket at enemies, hoping to hit by luck alone) need not apply. Overall ------- Best Machinegun- Talon's 3 Way Laser Gun Best Grenade- Jay's Grenade/ Lina's Motion Sensor Bomb Best Rocket- Lina's 55mm Rifle Overall, I recommend Lina. Her Machinegun is still powerful compared to Talon's, her bombs can be useful if you manipulate them and her rocket is very fast firing, if a little underpowered. Next up would be Talon, whose rocket really lets him down. Bringing up the rear come Jay and Alain, who end up being the weakest overall including having the worst hair. But their grenades are good. --------------------------------- Know Your (Extra) Weapons OT-SSEW --------------------------------- In addition to the basic weapons, you can unlock extra weapons and characters by clearing stages in Mission mode. (See 'Unlocking Secret Characters, Levels and Weapons' for details.) Special Machineguns -------------------- Enemy's Gun1- The advantage is that it never has to reload. The disadvantage is that it's weaker than badly made orange juice. Not the best gun available. Enemy's Bat- Looks like an Enemy Rocket2, except you swing it. It kinda takes the point away from it being a gun, doesn't it? Still, it does absolutely brutal damage if a hit connects. But that's the tricky part. UMP- Tears through health bars like they're made of tissue paper. One of the best Machineguns in the game. OICW- Pretty much the same as the UMP, it's a matter of which you think looks cooler when choosing between these two. Enemy's Gun2- It makes you look like you're floating, and you fire out blasts of devastating plasma fire. You can only fire a few shots before reloading, but it can reduce enemies to puddles of goop very quickly indeed. Special Grenades ---------------- Enemys's Bomb- On the plus side, you get infinite numbers of them. On the downside, it takes about 8 to kill an opponent with full health. Just say no. Enemy's Bomb2- The enemy's grenade launcher. The grenades fired are a bit on the weak side, and it has a pathetic blast radius, but it looks like an RPG and it's better than standard grenades any day. Not forgetting that it comes with infinite ammo! GLG40MM- A grenade launcher. A great weapon, but the grenades take ages to detonate unless they hit your opponent directly. It is a very powerful weapon though. OICW- Does a little less damage than the GLG40MM, and the grenades bounce for longer. At the end of the day, it's all down to personal preference. Multi Rocket- It makes you look like you're floating, but also acts like a delayed Rocket Launcher. The rockets are notoriously difficult to aim, but can do a heck of a lot of damage if they all connect. Medal Bomb- The same as a Life Bomb, only it looks like a medal. Perhaps not as convincing a decoy as the Life Bomb. Life Bomb- It's a bomb shaped like a health box. Your opponents try to collect the health, and end up getting incinerated. It's as good as it sounds. These won't fool the AI however, so save them for multiplayer games. Ammo Bomb- Same as a Life Bomb, but it looks like an Ammo pickup. Just as good as a Life Bomb. Special Rockets --------------- Enemy's Rocket- It's got infinite ammo! However, it doesn't take off a lot of damage. If you have difficulty finding ammo, this could be the weapon for you! However, for those of us who have read the instruction manual, it's not so useful. Enemy's Rocket2- The same as Enemy Rocket, only without the infinite ammo. Why bother? SPAS12- It's a shotgun. As you can guess, it's nigh lethal at close range, taking off nearly 80 points of damage, but pathetic at long range. If you're the kind of player that likes things up close and personal (and who doesn't?) this could be the weapon for you. OICW- Looks cool, but the rockets it fires aren't immensely powerful. It's one of the better rocket launchers in the game. It also comes with a nifty motion tracker which lets you find enemies! Enemy's Cannon- It makes you look like you're floating, and takes absolutely eons to fire. But you can kill an unarmoured opponent in one shot with it. The only problem is that you can't move while the cannon is charging and for a while after it fires. This makes it utterly useless. Guided Missile- In my opinion, this weapon is completely useless. It shoots out 3 missiles at a time, but these travel so slowly you'll get shot to bits while waiting for it to reload. Choose the Guided Missile2 instead. Flame Thrower- Covers your enemies in a snuggly blanket of warm flame. Great if you're in a confined area, but you need to be close to use it effectively. Potentially hilarious. Proton Torpedo- Once you get this weapon, the Railgun is redundant. Bullets will take off a full 80 damage to an unarmoured character, but you need pinpoint accuracy to even hit the back side of a barn with it. The bullets bounce off walls, too. A great weapon. You can find it littered about the stages, so it's not always a good idea to equip it as a primary weapon. Sniper's Rifle- One of the most original (for OutTrigger anyway) weapons in the game, the Sniper's Rifle is a little awkward to use without a separate zoom button. On the plus side, it'll take down anyone in a single shot. Not my favourite weapon, but it is very powerful and well worth taking time to master. It also has a severe shortage of bullets, so make sure to keep collecting them. Guided Missile2- Much better than the Guided Missile. The shots are a little easy to dodge, but they are fast moving and can do a lot of damage if they all connect. Even if it is cheating a bit =P PSG-1- It may look better than the Sniper's Rifle, it's not as powerful. Still has decent power, but with no splash damage you'd be better off with a good rocket launcher or the Sniper's Rifle instead. --------------------------------- Making Your Own Character OT-SSCE --------------------------------- OutTrigger's Character Edit mode lets you ignore the characters' weaknesses and make your own GOD AMONG PLAYERS! BWAH-HA-HA! Sorry, I got a bit carried away there. There are various options to tinker with: Character Model- As far as I know these models will all move at the same speed, and your characters speed depends on what WEAPONS they are holding, not their character model. So don't worry about picking Talon for your model, you can enjoy speed and long hair if you want. Initials- Your Initials. Duh. Colour- Red, Blue, Green or Yellow. If you want any colour, tough luck. Weapon Setting- Pick any weapons you want from the main characters, or any extra ones you have unlocked. See the relevant section for details on unlocking. Also see my notes on each weapon, and pick your favourites! My favourite character weapons: Gun- OICW or Enemy's Gun2 Bomb- GLG40MM or Life Bomb in Multiplayer Special- SPAS12, OICW or Sniper Rifle. --------------------------------- Using Items in OutTrigger OT-SSIT --------------------------------- To collect an item in OutTrigger, and in most other FPSs, you simply run over it to pick it up. However, there are a lot of items unique to OutTrigger which I'll detail here. I declined to include the obvious ones like Health and Ammo pickups, because if you can't work out what they do then OutTrigger probably isn't the game for you. Armor- In a lot of FPS games, armor merely reduces the damage done to your character. In OutTrigger however, it acts like a bigger health increase. Which is obviously a good thing, so collect it if you see it. Power Up (The Eagle Crest)- The Eagle Crest is probably the single most important pickup in OutTrigger. It's the equivalent of Quake's Quad Damage, or Unreal's... purple thing. By collecting it, you gain an enormous boost in weapon power and speed. If someone else gets this, run. In addition to the speed and power bonuses, the Eagle Crest turns your grenades into a grenade launcher temporarily. Awesome! If you have a grenade launcher equipped, it has no effect though. Thermography- With this item you can see every enemy on screen, even through walls and obstacles. It's obviously very useful. And it's great for weeding out campers, should any exist in OutTrigger. There are campers in every game I guess. Noctovision- You (yes YOU!) can see the light with this powerup. Without it, you can't see a thing in some levels so it's essential. It only appears in night missions, so make sure you pick it up. -------------------------- Various Strategies OT-SSVA -------------------------- Here are some general tips for playing OutTrigger. Note that these are specific to OutTrigger and are worth reading for people who have played other FPS games before. ------------ Rocket Jumping ------------- Yes, that's right, rocket jumping. People who have played games like Quake will know what I'm talking about. If you aim at the ground, fire your rocket launcher and jump at the same time, you'll propel yourself miles into the air. This is very useful for avoiding enemy attacks and getting to high-up places. -------- Reloading -------- Put simply, you can't reload manually in OutTrigger. So if you get to a quiet point, empty your machineguns and reload so you don't run out of bullets at an awkward moment. ---------------- Defending Yourself ----------------- While it's often enough to strafe to avoid enemy fire, remember that you can shoot incoming rockets down using your Machinegun. Don't underestimate your gun, and never forget that it's there. ----------------------- Enemies drop points, too! ------------------------ As well as getting a point for a kill in OutTrigger, you get a point for collecting the Silver Medals they drop upon death. So while you might think it's really clever to sit there sniping all day, your opponents can pickup half your points! This is a good feature of the game IMO as it prevents long-range rocket battles, but it would be nice to be able to turn it off at will. Nevertheless, it's here to stay so make the most of it. ------------------------------- 4)Arcade Mode Walkthrough OT-AM11 -------------------------------- Arcade Mode echoes the original OutTrigger arcade game (which was played with a joystick and trackball, I believe.) As such, it's not the main feature of the game and is more a chance to build up your skills for the Mission Mode and beating your friends in VS Mode or Online. ------------------- i)Preparatory PM-ARC ------------------- A more accurate title for this would have been 'toddlers' seeing as just about anyone with 2 thumbs and a couple of fingers could complete it, by fluke or by skill. If you can't complete these levels, you might want to consider another game instead. >>Exercise 1- Attack Reflex Training<< Objective: Take down 10 terrorists within the time limit! Give me a break. You have one minute to shoot down 10 terrorists, but it can be done in a fraction of that time. Here are the terrorist locations just in case. Hostages have a white target surrounding them, don't shoot them. Ah hell, just do it anyway. You couldn't fail this stage if you tried. 1)At the front, behind the right-hand box. 2)At the front, behind the left-hand box. 3)In the second row, on the right. 4)In the second row, on the left. <> 5)At the back, on the left 6)At the front, on the left 7)Second row, on the right 8)Back and left 9)Front and left 10)Pick one! Ok, that was pathetic. On to the next mission! >>Exercise 2- Mobile Target Training<< Objective: Take down 10 terrorists within the time limit! This is just as easy as the last one. Tape down the fire button and off we go. These suckers will only take a couple of bullets from Lina' machinegun each. 1)From the left, close up. 2)From the left, far away. 3)From the right, far away. 4)From the left, close up. 5)From the left, far away. 6)From the right, far away. 7)From the right, mid distance. 8)From the right, far away. 9)From the left, close up. 10)From the right, far away. >>Exercise 3- Stealth Training<< Objective: Collect 24 medals within the time limit! Whenever Counter-Terrorists are done saving the world, they like to collect medals in their spare time. Not my idea of fun, but I'm sure they get a kick out of it. I'm not even going to give a walkthrough for this level- just follow the trail of medals and you can't go wrong. You can clear it in 10 seconds. >>Exercise 4- Attack Reflex Training << Objective: Take down 14 terrorists within the time limit! Wow! 14 terrorists! FOURTEEN! Whatever are we going to do? Just shoot them like last time, of course. If they manage to fire a rocket (shame on you!) Shoot it down with your machineguns. No excuses for not passing this one. 1)Right in front of you. 2)Left, ground floor >>Hostage on the second floor, don't shoot!<< 3)Left, ground floor 4)Left of the last terrorist 5)Above and to the right >>Hostage close left, don't shoot!<< 6)Same as terrorist 4 7)Above and to the right 8)Below 7 9)Above and to the left Ignore the terrorist to the left, he's too quick 10)To the right 11)Close up, to the extreme left >>Hostage in the back, don't shoot!<< 12)Dead centre, high up. Ignore the green 13)High right >>Watch the hostage) 14)A whole bunch of terrorists pop up, shoot them all >>Exercise 5- Stealth Attack Training<< Objective: Collect 35 medals within the time limit! What collecting medals has to do with 'stealth attack' I'm not quite sure. Just collect them all quickly and we can get onto the real missions. Remember to jump to the pillar to collect the last one at the end. >>Exercise 6- Combat Training<< Objective: Take down 10 terrorists within the time limit! The closest you're going to get to a real deathmatch. Just keep moving and shoot with your rockets, remembering to use your strafe to dodge incoming rockets. This is as basic as deathmatch gets, really. One rocket will take out these morons. When you complete this mission, you can move on to Novice and hopefully something a little more taxing. --------------- ii)Novice NV-ARC --------------- If Preparatory was for toddlers, then you've just graduated from nursery school. It doesn't get much harder at the Novice level, unfortunately. >>Exercise 1- Quick Ambush Training<< Objective: Take down 10 terrorists within the time limit! The first mission is deathmatch for dummies. Keep on the move, and dispose of the terrorists with a good old-fashioned rocket to the face. The enemies will spawn in a circle anticlockwise after a while, as the quicker people among you may have spotted. >>Exercise 2- Quick Ambush Training<< Objective: Take down 10 terrorists within the time limit! More of the same, really, this time in a train station. Just do what you did the last time and use those pillars as cover. The Eagle Crest will appear after a while, gobble it up and then finish off your job. >>Exercise 3- Close-quarter Combat Training<< Objective: Take down 10 terrorists within the time limit! In a slight deviation from the past two levels, the enemies are all armed with clubs, bats, cudgels etc. and will try to bash your brains in. Stay to the outside of the level and when the terrorists come close, give them a taste of your rockets. To make things more interesting, why not switch to the photon torpedos and practice your aiming? That's what Arcade Mode is for after all. >>Exercise 4- Close-quarter Combat Training<< Objective: Take down 10 terrorists within the time limit! I have the strangest feeling of deja vu. Nonetheless, this is the same as the last level only the area is a little more confined. There's also a danger of being shot at in this level, whihc makes a refreshing surprise. Make sure to collect the armor, which spawns directly behind where you start. You can also get the Thermography in the opposite corner to where you start. An Eagle Crest pops up on the bridge, but you should know that by now. See? Only 4 levels into the game and we're already learning the levels. >>Exercise 5- Close-quarter Combat Training<< Objective: Take down 10 terrorists within the time limit! I like this level- it's good for deathmatch. After all this training, you'll surely be prepared for close-combat. Be careful not to hug the walls, as most of the terrorists are rocket wielding menaces. Their rockets travel so slowly, you should have no trouble side-stepping them. Following the sickening re- introduction of rocket to mouth a few times, claim the Eagle Crest from under the walkway (which you can shoot through from beneath, too!) and then you're pretty much guaranteed victory. Anything within half a mile of a terrorist should kill them once you have the Eagle Crest. >>Exercise 6- Final Combat Training<< Objective- Take down 10 terrorists within the time limit! And here we are- the final stage of Novice. The terrorists have a little more health than before, so it might take two rocket blasts to take them down. If things are really getting tough, you might even have to switch to a different weapon! Wow! The Eagle Crest appears roughly in the middle of this level, located on the lower section. Get it, and get killing. ---------------------- iii)Intermediate IT-ARC ---------------------- Intermediate is the next step from Novice (obviously). This is the first level in Arcade Mode when you're in danger of actually dying. Instead of those silly 'Collect the medals' Missions, here we'll be going through all-out-combat. Yeehaa! Woohoo! etc. >>Exercise 1- Close-quarter Combat Training<< Objective: Take down 10 terrorists within the time limit! This mission is a doddle. Use your rockets to blast the terrorists away, and throw grenades behind billboards to flush them out. You can shoot their rockets away with your Machineguns, and if you get Eagle Crest things get even easier. >>Exercise 2- Team Combat Training<< Objective: Take down 10 terrorists within the time limit! It's the same level as before, with the same enemies and the same strategy. Only one thing has changed- don't shoot your teammate, obviously. This level shouldn't pose any major problems. And this is supposed to be the Intermediate level? >>Exercise 3- Close-quarter Combat Training<< Objective: Take down 10 terrorists within the time limit! The level has changed, but again, the strategy remains the same as ever. The enemies are armed with a combination of bats and rockets this time, so if you have a Sniper's Rifle just mow them down as they approach. If you don't, a good few rockets will still do the trick. Don't forget the Eagle Crest, which will appear on the bridge. >>Exercise 4- Night Combat Training<< Objective: Take down 10 terrorists within the time limit! This is basically the same as Exercise 3, except it's at night. Get a Noctovision almost directly in front of where you start, and get killing. Once your Noctovision runs out, get a new one ASAP. Apart from that, it's the same as the last level. Should this be seen as a good or a bad thing? You can replenish your Noctovision in the corner with the Stone platform. >>Exercise 5- Comprehensive Combat Training<< Objective: Take down 10 terrorists within the time limit! You're now faced with a mixture of all the previous missions, but it still isn't too difficult. Just repeat the tactics of the earlier missions, and don't shoot your teammate. This isn't so bad now is it? Some terrorists have flame throwers and guided missile launchers, so watch out for them. They are wearing white boiler suits. >>Exercise 6- Comprehensive Combat Training<< Objective: Take down 10 trainees within the time limit! The first real challenge of Arcade mode, you're now in a straight Deathmatch. Read the tactics earlier in this FAQ if you get stuck. This is nothing you can't handle though, and certainly nothing compared to Advanced level. Keep your cool and remember that they're only computer characters. ;) This one can be a little tricky without a decent rocket launcher, so bare that in mind! ----------------- iv)Advanced AD-ARC ----------------- You're OutTriggering (???) with the best of them now. Advanced should be a test of your skills, and a good indication of how well you can do in Mission Mode. If you can clear Advanced Arcade Mode, you should have no problems with the Missions. Anyway, on with the Walkthrough. I don't recommend using a Sniper's Rifle here unless you are really, REALLY good. A decent rocket launcher is important here to make it easier for you. >>Exercise 1- Team Combat Training<< Objective: Take down 10 terrorists within the time limit! Advanced level starts off with a bang, or a lot of them, in the Colliseum. You get a teammate to help you out, but they aren't blessed with the best of AI. A lot of the enemies are equipped with bats, and some with Photon Torpedos. Be careful not to get ambushed by enemies approaching along the outside from both ends, and stay away from them so they can't use their bats on you. Use rockets and the Eagle Crest when it becomes available to blow them all away. Not too hard. >>Exercise 2- Close-quarter Combat Training<< Objective: Take down 10 terrorists within the time limit! Back to the station again! Hooray! The enemies are becoming a lot tougher now and are heavily armoured. Use a combination of rocket and grenade fire to put them away. If you're using grenades, make sure to hit the enemies directly for maximum damage. Watch out for the guys in white boiler suits as they will have rocket launchers and the other heavy hitting weapons. >>Exercise 3- Comprehensive Combat Training<< Objective: Take down 10 trainees within the time limit! Things are really starting to heat up, and it's only level 3! As you begin the mission, watch out for trainees spawning behind you and greet them with a quick rocket up the ass. Other than this, tactics remain the same as the other missions like this you've encountered before. Keep your health topped up at all times! Getting the Eagle Crest will help you complete this mission quickly. >>Exercise 4- Team Combat Training<< Objective: Take down 10 terrorists within the time limit! We're reading into (ha ha) some serious killing in the library again. The enemies are tougher than previous stages here, but it's still nothing a rocket won't fix. At this stage in the game, there's not much I can say except to keep moving and dodging the enemy rockets and bats. Your teammate is there to soak up bullets normally meant for you, so make sure she does her job properly! >:) A good grenade launcher is very useful here if you can get one. >>Exercise 5- Comprehensive Combat Training<< Objective: Take down 10 trainees within the time limit! Getting closer to the finish line now, but the difficulty isn't letting up. At first, trainees will spawn to your left and back, so turn around and attack them head on. Time is your real enemy here- fight it valiantly. Your main worries here are Talon and his stinking Railgun which will doubtlessly kill you a few times. The easiest target is the guy dressed up like a terrorist- you can't miss him, he'll be the one trying to bash your face in with a bat. Don't let another trainee get the Eagle Crest if you can help it! And it's better to stay low because if you up top you're likely to get sniped by Talon. >>Exercise 6- Final Combat Training<< Objective: Take down 11 enemies within the time limit! Congratulations, you've reached the final battle- against a whole bunch of Salamanders. This is, of course, ridiculously hard. At first the Salamanders appear one at a time- just use rockets to pick them off. The hard part comes as you start running out of rockets, and their numbers start increasing to two and three at a time. To dodge the Salamander jumps, strafe to the sides. To dodge the Homing Missiles, run like hell. With anything else, just pray you'll make it through alive. Luckily you can get killed a couple of times and come back with full ammo, but this eats away at your precious time. Some bat wielders may also appear- get them quickly, as they're an easy kill. As you near the end of the level, the Salamanders become more heavily armoured. A grenade to the head is the order of the day here. The Eagle Crest is nigh- essential to completing the level. The best strategy is to kill as many of the Salamanders as possible before they can take you out. Also, a bit of luck helps of course. If you can't clear the level, keep practicing! Practice makes perfect, and clichés make for boring reading. With Arcade Mode cleared, you're all ready to set off on a real adventure in Mission Mode. Or not. Some of the Missions are so easy, you'll die laughing. "I conquered Arcade Mode... so I could collect more medals? Gah!" ------------------------------- 5)Mission Mode Walkthrough OT-MM22 -------------------------------- Mission Mode never appeared in the arcade version of OutTrigger. It's a bit like Arcade Mode, only on a much grander scale. It's also a little tougher in places, but most missions have a trick to get through them easier. By completing certain missions in Mission Mode you can unlock extra character models and weapons to use in VS and Arcade too! You can also unlock 'new maps' but they're really the same as the older ones with a palette swap. (See 'Unlocking Secret Characters, Levels and Weapons' for details.) ---------------------- i)Novice Missions NV-MM ---------------------- Most of these levels are so easy, they're an insult to your intelligence. They make even Preparatory Arcade look difficult by comparison. Some of them are slightly tricky though. Talk about inconsistency! I also gave the names their own names, because they don't have any to speak of. The computer even shows you what to do in these missions, so you've no excuse for not completing them. >>Mission 1: What are the controls again?<< Objective: Get All Medals Within the Time Limit. 3 Medals, and 30 seconds to get them in. If you can't complete this level in 5 seconds, you're officially crap. My record is just under 3. The 3 medals are ahead of you- just run and get them. And get onto the next level quickly before someone sees you playing this one. >>Mission 2: Oh no! Running in a circle!<< Objective: Get All Medals Within the Time Limit. Nearly as easy as the last mission (as if that were possible) just run straight ahead of you and collect the medals. If you can't complete this level, you're failing at life. The game gives you 45 seconds to clear it in, which is even more embarrassing. >>Mission 3: Using the Fire Button!<< Objective: Kill 10 Terrorists Within the Time Limit. This is very similar to the Novice Arcade walkthrough, so I won't insult your intelligence by repeating all that. Just shoot the terrorists when they appear and don't shoot the hostages. Easy peasy. >>Mission 4: Strafing si l337!<< Objective: Dodge All of the Enemies' Attacks. Learn how to strafe... Sort of. Get to one side of the platform, when the enemy launches a missile move to the other side. Repeat until boredom ensues, or you complete the mission. Whichever is quicker. The shots get a little faster near the end of the level, but it doesn't get any harder. If you want extra points, get closer to the rockets being fired at you. It's fairly pointless (get it?) though. >>Mission 5: Targets Can't be Choosers<< Objective: Kill 10 Terrorists Within the Time Limit. In this mission, the terrorists won't even fire at you. So take your time. Just switch weapons accordingly and shoot them as they pop up. No sweat. >>Mission 6: Treasure Hunt<< Objective: Get All Medals Within the Time Limit. Another medal collecting level, and another easy one at that. Run around the outside and collect the medals there first, before collecting the medals in the middle. Jump up at the end to collect the medal on the platform. >>Mission 7: Shooting Terrorists in a Barrel<< Objective: Kill 10 Terrorists Within the Time Limit. Back to the Observatory for the first 'real mission.' The terrorists rarely, if ever, shoot back. Just use your gun to mow them down, as their energy bars are very weak. Get the flamethrower if you can to get through the mission even quicker. >>Mission 8: Shooting a Terrorist in a Barrel<< Objective: Kill a Terrorist Within the Time Limit. What do you get if you cross one inept terrorist with a volley of rockets? One easy mission. Use your rockets to toast this sucker quickly and painfully. The time limit is very generous. Get killing, and use the strafe tactics you learned earlier to dodge those rockets! >>Mission 9: The Bombs! The Bombs!<< Objective: Destroy all of the Bombs Within the Time Limit. Bomb disposal missions are probably my least favourite in the game. The bomb placement changes every time, making it an awful mission to write a walkthrough for. Luckily, things aren't too tough in the Novice mission. Use your radar to look for bombs, which you can see flashing in hard to reach places. Use your machinegun to blow them up. I recommend Talon's machinegun as it will bounce around, giving you a bit of freedom. There are three bombs to find in this mission. One is nearly always on top of the train. Other locations are stuck to billboards or just lying on the floor. Use your best judgement to find them in time. Good luck! Just be thankful you're not on the Intermediate level yet. >>Mission 10: Barbecue<< Objective: Kill 10 Terrorists Within the Time Limit. This level is made more interesting by the fact that you can only use a Flamethrower to kill the terrorists with. Some of the terrorists have the Flamethrower too. Just cook them all at close range, grab extra health and ammo as you need it. The Flamethrower tends to eat ammo like popcorn, so make sure you have a good supply of it. If the Eagle Crest appears, snag it as it will make things a little easier. >>Mission 11: Ruin Rumble<< Objective: Highest Point Total at End of Time Limit Wins. Your first real deathmatch is reasonably taxing, but not too bad. Your main worry should be Talon and his Railgun. Lina presents the least problems, with Jay/Alain somewhere in the middle. Watch out for Talon while you pick on the other two characters- after all, it's only a game. If you get stuck, consult sections 2 and 3 of this Walkthrough. >>Mission 12: Sitting Ducks<< Objective: Defend the Hostage. While it may be tempting to shoot that hostage, it won't help you win the mission. This is more like Mission 3 than anything else. Watch out for the terrorists who initially appear with an orange circle, as they are the most dangerous. Truth be told, none of them are very dangerous. Maybe they should have spent more time at Terrorist School. Remember kids- don't be a fool. Stay in school. >>Mission 13: Terrorist Team-up<< Objective: Team Battle. Highest Point Total at End of Time Limit Wins. The main danger here isn't the terrorists you're facing- it's that dumb teammate of yours, who doesn't care about your safety and WILL shoot through you to get the kills. So watch out. Other than that, grenades are useful here as you can bounce them off the Observatory walls and hopefully into the face of an unsuspecting terrorist. It's very easy to get more than 50 points here if you're good enough. This shouldn't present any problems. >>Mission 14: Snow Problem (Argh! Make the puns stop!)<< Objective: Kill a Terrorist Within the Time Limit. What do you get... oh wait, I've already used that joke. But it isn't half as funny as this mission. You know the score by now- use rockets to tear that terrorist to pieces. Hooray for counter-terrorism! I bet the poor guy was having a nice holiday until you showed up, too. >>Mission 15: Murder in the Dark<< Objective: Kill 10 Terrorists Within the Time Limit. What this mission neglects to tell you is that you have a teammate with you. They don't seem to shoot you as much in this mission, which can only be a good thing. Use your rockets to finish off the terrorists as quickly as possible, and we're onto the Intermediate missions! Don't forget to pick up the Noctovision ASAP, unless you've been eating a lot of carrots. ---------------------------- ii)Intermediate Missions IT-MM ---------------------------- Suddenly, the game just got harder. A couple of missions here are quite difficult, especially the bomb disposal ones. Just keep a cool head and you should be able to clear most of them. >>Mission 1: Castle Combat<< Objective: Highest Point Total at End of Time Limit Wins. Just a regular deathmatch. You know what to do. >>Mission 2: Target Practice<< Objective: Dodge or Shoot the Guided Missiles and Survive. This mission takes place in the colosseum. The hostage hear is delirious, and doesn't want to be saved. Instead, he prefers to shoot at you. Idiot. While the tempting thing is to just shoot him, this will cost you the mission. Move to the outside of the colosseum and move around the circular path. The hostage will launch a volley of missiles. When they are behind you, shoot them. Alternatively, keep running and they will soon explode. They don't travel quickly. Keep repeating this for the full 45 seconds. Make sure NOT TO SHOOT THE HOSTAGE because one bullet kills and it's easily done. In the last 10 seconds, the hostage fires special homing missiles. These will actually home in on you =P Don't worry if these hit, as they won't take away all of your energy. Survive for 45 seconds and we're onto the next mission. >>Mission 3: Arcade Recycled<< Objective: Kill 12 Terrorists Within the Time Limit. Another Team Battle, back to our favourite area- the station! Use rockets and the Eagle Crest once available to kill these guys off pretty quickly, the same as in Arcade mode. None of them have anything special or unusual. >>Mission 4: Don't Damage the Paintings!<< Objective: Destroy All of the Bombs Within the Time Limit. All hail one of the most frustrating missions in the game. Even worse, I can't give you a complete Walkthrough because the locations of the bombs change from level to level. I'll give you a good idea of what route to take through the level, however. Once again, I recommend Talon's machine gun as it will ricochet off walls. If you get stuck, spray the area with bullets. Remember, you can get hit by 1 bomb, but 2 will kill you. Good luck! 1) Turn 90 degrees left from your starting point, and head up the stairs. If you see any bombs, shoot them (obviously.) 2) Go into the room on your left, around the outside wall and down the stairs again. Hop up the two platforms, and survey the spiral staircase including roof before heading through the doorway at the top of the spiral staircase. Beware of any bombs on the pillar. 3) Up the stairs again, then turn 180 degrees and up another staircase. Walk along the bridge at the top, then drop down and through the doorway to you extreme left. 4) Move into the right hand corridor, survey everywhere for bombs. 5) Go down the corridor on the left near to where you entered (be careful) but once you see the metal grill reappear on the right, drop down onto the floor near to where you started. 6) Head left and up the stairs (in other words, turn 90 degrees right from your starting point) before heading along the balcony. After covering the balcony, drop down and check the pillars directly in front of your starting point. By now you should have destroyed all the bombs. You may also be dead. There is plenty of time to complete this mission, so take your time and search in every nook and cranny for the bombs! I'll admit, it is difficult. I was stuck on this mission until I started work on the Walkthrough. If it's any consolation, this is actually easier than the Advanced Mission! >>Mission 5: All Quiet in the Library<< Objective: Kill a Terrorist Within the Time Limit. It's just you versus one terrorist in this mission. The Library is a good stage for this kind of level, providing plenty of cover and a mixture of wide, open spaces and tight corridors. The best strategy is to trap the terrorist in a corner and fire rockets at him until he dies. He will use a lot of rockets and possibly the odd grenade against you. Make sure to keep your health topped up if you've been attacked. Other than those points, this is like a tranquil holiday compared to the previous mission. >>Mission 6: Station Shootout<< Objective: Highest Point Total at End of Time Limit Wins. Another Deathmatch, this time in the Busy Station. Lina's bomb laying antics and the tight design of this level make her more dangerous than normal, but it's still relatively easy. If you can't clear the level, practice until you can! >>Mission 7: M-m-m-m-m-monster Kill!<< Objective: Kill 8 Terrorists with Consecutive Combo Attacks. This might sound really complicated and difficult, but it's really very easy. Use your rockets to pick off the terrorists one at a time, but leave a gap of a couple of seconds between the kills. Don't just shoot the terrorists as you see them. If you even out the killings, another terrorist will spawn when you kill one, meaning you can keep the combo going. If you rush into this level like a madman, you will lose the combo time and time again. Patience is a virtue! >>Mission 8: In Dire Need of a Sniper Rifle<< Objective: Defend the Hostage. As the title suggests, a Sniper Rifle would be handy here. But the level is still easy, even when you're only allowed to use a Machinegun. Just shoot the terrorists as they appear. >>Mission 9: Rocket Orgy<< Objective: Team Battle. Highest Point Total at End of Time Limit Wins. Back to the Colisseum. This level makes everything so easy! The key thing here is never to go into the middle of the level except to heal up, otherwise you're an easy target. Lead your target and fire rockets, and hopefully they will walk right into them. You're in a team battle- so gang up on the opponents with your teammate! This mission shouldn't present any problems at this stage of the game. >>Mission 10: So Many Terrorists, So Little Time<< Objective: Kill 10 Terrorists Within the Time Limit. What seems like a basic mission is made slightly more interesting by the fact that you only have 10 seconds to complete it in! Of course, you can still collect time pickups from your felled enemies to increase the time on this mission- and believe me, you will have to. Make sure you collect the powerups before your enemies get the chance to- now is the time to bring out that Flamethrower and torch some terrorists, as you need a weapon which will finish them off very quickly. Although it might seem obvious in a game of this nature, DON'T DIE whatever you do because that will eat away into your precious time. >>Mission 11: Museum... Massacre? Damn Alliteration<< Objective: Kill a Terrorist Within the Time Limit. Do you know how to strafe? Do you know how to fire a rocket launcher? If the answer to both of these questions is Yes, congratulations! You can complete Mission 11! Seriously, this is another one-on-one kill or be killed scenario. If you can take down 10 terrorists in 10 seconds, then taking down 1 in 160 seconds should be even easier, right? Well, he's more heavily armoured, and can be aggressive, but there's still no excuse. Make sure not to get caught between any pillars in the Art Museum stage, which is notorious for this. >>Mission 12: Photon Trampoline<< Objective: Kill 5 Terrorists Within the Time Limit, and Rescue the Hostage. If you don't know what to do in this mission, it can be the hardest thing in the world. With this walkthrough, it becomes the easiest. Just follow the step by step instructions and this mission is a breeze! Don't get a terrorist see you- it will hurt a lot. This mission is also lots of fun. Challenge your friends to see who can get the fastest time! And laugh at the people who get killed! 1) Collect the Thermography near your starting point, and turn to face away from the metal fence. Now move forwards slightly and turn 90 degrees to face through the gap in the train carriages. Strafe left until the pillar is fully in view. Don't move any further! Now line up your sights and fire a Photon Torpedo at the pillar. It should bounce off and nail the terrorist. Use your Thermography to help you, and if you miss just restart the mission. There's no shame in it. 2) Onto Terrorist 2. Turn 90 left and walk down towards the billboard. When you can see the right hand edge of the door (turn slightly right to get a better angle) fire and it should kill the terrorist. If you can't get it, try a few more times until you master it, then restart. Or wait ages for another ammo pickup if you're that way inclined. 3) Turn back and go between the two carriages again. Our next target is the one on the same side as Terrorist 2. Hug the carriage nearest the terrorist and aim at him, strafing until you're as close to his line of sight as you can get without being shot at. If you shoot now, the Photon Torpedo should explode upon contact with the wall and will take him out. 4) Grab the second Thermography, you'll need it by now. Now comes the more awkward part. You can see two terrorists standing there. Move as far to the right as you can, but not too close to the terrorist. Shoot the pillar again and your Torpedo will bounce, killing the terrorist. 5) Nearly finished. Move to the extreme left of the same carriage, and in a little (but not too much, you don't want to get shot, do you???) Again, shoot at the pillar to nail the terrorist. Now run to the hostage to complete this mission, hopefully with the terrorist still dying. That'll teach him to mess with an expert Photon Torpedo user! >>Mission 13: Bookworm<< Objective: Highest Point Total at End of Time Limit Wins. A Deathmatch in the Library, just like in Arcade Mode. You know the drill by now- watch out for Talon, because he's such a prick and just loves to try and run away with things. Don't let him! >>Mission 14: An Insult to your Abilities<< Objective: Kill 12 Terrorists Within the Time Limit. I know what you're thinking- there's got to be some catch, right? Wrong. Oedo is a cool level, but when you combine Thermography, and some VERY weak terrorists you have to question what this is doing in the Intermediate Missions instead of the Novice ones! Just finish it nice and quickly. >>Mission 15: Iron Man<< Objective: Shoot 100 Bullets at the Enemy Within the Time Limit. The UMP is a great machinegun, but you won't get to witness its awesome power here. You have to shoot a Salamander 100 times, but only direct hits will count. You'll know when you hit him, because there'll be an on-screen indicator telling you so. 1 The Salamander's attacks come in three variets- the rockets, which are easily dodged by strafing, the guided missiles which are more difficult to dodge but not impossible, and the atomic laser blast which is very noticeable and very easy to dodge, too. There's no health available on this level, but you can afford to die a few times in the time limit if you need to. Just keep shooting the Salamander and you'll soon be onto the Advanced Missions! -------------------------- iii)Advanced Missions AD-MM -------------------------- Prepare to die. The Advanced Missions are the toughest part of OutTrigger (which doesn't really say much for the difficulty of the game). If you clear them all, you've mastered the game. Well, not the online mode, but the single player is mastered. What did you expect? I have my limits! >>Mission 1: Whiteout<< Objective: Team Battle. Highest Point Total at End of Time Limit Wins. This is a straightforward Team Battle- well, a pretty hard one, but there are no special conditions to worry about. Make sure to use the layout of the level to your advantage and collect the Eagle Crest when it appears. >>Mission 2: Blasts in the Furnace<< Objective: Destroy all of the Bombs Within the Time Limit. That's right, the bomb defusing mission is back. Thankfully, due to the layout of the Blast Furnace, this is a little easier than the previous mission IMO. If you follow the instructions below, you will be able to cover the whole level with a minimum of doubling back. NOTE: As the bomb locations will change in every mission, you must look anywhere and everywhere to find them. Use your radar for help. 1) Turn 180 degrees from your starting position, and head down the stairs. 2) Walk through the walkway, turning left and then heading across the wire bridge. Watch out for bombs stuck to the left hand side of the tunnel's exit, they can be hard to see. 3) Move around the pillar on the right and underneath the platform. Search for bombs in the corner before heading up the staircase. Be wary of bombs in the corner of the staircase. 4) Walk around the outside of the platform, checking for bombs on the giant vat in front of you before returning to the starting point and clearing up the last of the bombs. Told you it was easy. If you're having problems, just practice and follow the tips and you'll be fine. Just be thankful you didn't have to find bombs in Oedo instead! >>Mission 3: It's Raining Grenades<< Objective: Highest Point Total at End of Time Limit Wins. In this level, everyone has a GLG40MM Grenade Launcher, and that's it. Cue ensuing chaos. The scene for this level is Oedo- use it to your advantage. This level features many alcoves and crannies where you can bounce grenades into- use them to your advantage by keeping the enemy pinned down there. See also my GLG40MM description, and general Deathmatch tips. Get enough points and you'll win! This isn't too hard. >>Mission 4: Medal of Honour<< Objective: Get All the Medals Within the Time Limit. Medal collecting in Advanced Missions? Yes, you read that correctly. This might be initially confusing- you find yourself being blown to bits when you collect certain medals. That's because some of the medals are actually bombs disguised as medals. Equip your gun, and go about collecting the medals as usual. Before you collect each medal, shoot it with your gun- the bombs will explode, but the medals will remain unscathed. Now you can collect them as normal. There's plenty of time to complete this mission, and no excuse when you fail. It's at this point that I took a break from writing this guide (and wrote two on Ecco the Dolphin instead.) By the time I came back to Outtrigger, my Dreamcast was already dead. I'll add in some of the tips I gave people in emails... >>Mission 15: Final Fight<< Objective: Kick that Salamander's ass, or die trying! Advanced 15 is a nightmare, one of the hardest missions in the game by far. You'll need to use weapons that inflict heavy damage here- machineguns are fairly pointless. The Grenade Launcher (GLG40MM) will work well, as will Sniper's Rifle, OICW and Proton Torpedos. However, I wouldn't choose the torpedos first because the boss skates around so quickly you'll have a hard time hitting him. The key here is to do what the boss does- make yourself difficult to hit! Strafe and jump, never stop moving and watch him carefully so you can dodge his moves accordingly. There is no real walkthrough to this stage- just keep hitting him with all you've got and he will eventually crumble. Of course, you might die, but at least you'll know what to do! ^_^ From my recollection, Salamander gets up again after dying the first time and may get harder the second time around. Damn, I've forgotten so much of this game already. ---------------------------- 8)Credits and Acknowledgements ----------------------------- Thanks to SEGA and AM2 for making OutTrigger!
