Let's not even think, however, about the whole language issue here given that this game takes place in France. {2} Since she was first introduced in the first Sakura Wars game, Iris has always called Ogami 'Oniichan' (お兄ちゃん), which literally means 'elder brother' (c.f. translation notes from episode 2). Because old habits die hard, I've left this as 'Oniichan' in my translation, for better or for worse. Additionally - and this may seem awkward or just plain inconsistent - I've left "Ogami-san" as "Ogami-san" whenever Sakura says it, because it just doesn't seem right any other way. ^^; {3} This is a little homage being paid to Cutey Honey. {4} A 'Yamato Nadeshiko' (大和なでしこ) is the name of a flower known as 'dianthus superbus' in Latin. It is a small, common, but easily distinguishable wildflower. 'Yamato' is another name for Japan. Additionally, a 'Yamato Nadeshiko' refers to a sort of idealized prototype of a woman, one who is feminine; chaste; devoted, respectful, and obedient to her husband; and looks delicate and gentle (like a flower) to society, though she is strong enough to raise children and take care of the household. In other words, a 'Yamato Nadeshiko' is the quintessential personification of conservative values desired in a woman. Sakura might somewhat fit this description, but Sumire surely wouldn't. {5} 'Goshujin-sama' (御主人様), which might literally mean 'master,' is also used to refer to another person's husband or when directly speaking to one's own husband. {6} As you may know, tofu is very soft stuff that tears apart when you touch it. Thus, what Iris is saying is that "you're so dumb, you'd cry if you hit your head on the corner of a piece of tofu," something that would be quite incredible if it actually happened. This is actually a somewhat commonly-used expression. {7} 'Kanzaki Fuujin-ryu' (神崎風塵流), literally the 'Kanzaki Dust in the Wind Style.' 'Fuujin,' or 'dust in the wind,' while possibly meaning the miscellaneous happenings of everyday life, here has connotations of 'war' or 'battle.' Evidently this is a fictional style (the 'Kanzaki' of course being Sumire's family name) of naginata-wielding, unlike Sakura's Hokushin Ittou-ryu (c.f. note {8}); I don't know if it's supposed to be based on a real style. {8} The Hokushin Ittou-ryu (北辰一刀流) is an actual existing style of kenjutsu (the art of the sword). It was founded in the late Edo period (circa 1830) by Chiba Shusaku. According to one source, he "promoted an art of swordfighting that was less warlike and more spiritual," and followers of this style would hold competitions in which they would fight using a bokken (a wooden sword more resembling a katana than the shinai used in modern kendo) against a person armed with a naginata (a long polearm-type weapon with a blade at the end of it, often associated with being wielded by women). This fits Sakura's persona well, as she is very spiritual-minded, and Sumire, her "rival," wields a naginata. {9} Here Ciseaux attaches an extraneous 'u' to the beginning of 'subarashii' ('wonderful,' 'magnificent,' etc.) for an additional usagi reference. -eof-
