Introduction --------------- Going through Game FAQS, I came across another one of my favorite games without a walkthrough. Avenging Spirit, also know as Phantasm, was an fun arcade game, which was ported to Gameboy. Like the game Messiah for PC, you had the ability to posses your enemies. -------- 2. Story -------- One day, you and your girlfriend were walking down an alley. All of a sudden, you were attacked. Your girlfriend was kidnapped and you were shot, trying to stop them. Your girlfriend's father, a scientist, called your spirit, using his invention. The father explains that those gangsters kidnapped his daughter for ransom. The gangsters want the Ghost Energy Research. With your limited power, you must save your girlfriend, before it's to late! ----------- 3. Controls ----------- D Pad - Move Character B Button - Attack/Posses A Button - Jump/Posses Start - Pause Select - Deposes - Move spirit over characters head and press either button to posses. - Press Down to crouch. - When you're on a elevator, jump when it's going up to get a Boost Jump. - Deposes will cause you to lose half your ghost energy. - Your Ghost Energy, E, decreases the longer you are without a body. - Warning, falling on spikes kills your physical body. - You cannot be harmed in Ghost Form. - You can fall down certain platforms by pressing Down+A - In boss battles, your can not leave your host. -------- 4. Items -------- Through out the game, you will come across some items that will aid you in your quest. Small Vile - Replenishes 3 bars of Ghost Energy Large Vile - Replenishes 6 bars of Ghost Energy Heart Capsule - Replenishes 5 bars of Life Energy Key - Need 3 to save your girlfriend ---------------- 5. Enemies/Hosts ---------------- Through out the game, you will come across many enemies that you fight and posses. Strength is determined by how much Life & Ghost Energy is taken from you. This is organized by appearance. Name: Name of Enemy Attack: Main Attack Crouch Attack Jump Attack Agility: Jump Height Enemy Speed : Speed of Enemy Notes: Notes on Enemy --------------------------- Name: Gangster Attack: Pistol " " Strength: Two Agility: Normal Speed : Normal Notes: This is the first and basic enemy you will come across. Name: Invisible Man Attack: / / / Strength: / Agility: Really High Speed : Fast Notes: The Invisible Man is a unique enemy. He cannot attack you and you cannot attack when you posses him. What makes him useful is that he is an invinsible character. Like any invinsible item, you have a certin amount of time with the character, and the timer is you Life Energy. So, it is wise to be near an enemy, before you deposes the enemy. He is also one of the highest jumpers in the game. She carries a powerful Laser Pistol, {although how she got it is beyond me}, that fire a energy, projectile beam that travels vertically. She is the highest jumper in the game and her strength cannot be determined. --------- 6. Bosses --------- Here is the list of Bosses in the game. They are a direct copy from the walkthrough. Robot Snakes Very weak boss{s}. They pop out of the ground and fire a laser beam. Each snake has 2-3 life bars, so with the Salamander it only takes one hit to destroy them. Just wait for one to pop out, hit him as many times as you can and dodge there attack, any way you can. Then repeat until they are destroyed. Demolisher This boss isn't too hard. The conveyer belt pushes you to the left, trying to make it harder to dodge the Demolisher's weapon, the Crusher. The Demolisher has a good but faulty defense. It raises and lowers its shield every 2-3 seconds and you can only attack the cockpit when it's risen. The best enemies to use would be the Robot, or any other long-range enemies. Continue dodging his Crusher and attacking its cockpit, and sooner or later it will explode. Python The Python is a large snake that fires venom clouds. It can fire one or two venom clouds every 2-3 seconds. Dodging is the only hard part in this battle, because you never know when it will fire one or two venom clouds. It sometimes takes a small break from firing venom clouds, so take the advantage. Also his one venom cloud is faster then when it spews two venom clouds. A long-range attacker is best, but you can only hurt it one Life Bar at a time. Continue dodging and attacking, and it will fall sooner or later. After the battle, you find the Main Base, but you have to go from the ground up. Sludge The toxic waste of the Base mutated and became a large pile of living waste. It will camouflage it self in the sewer water and rise where you stand. When it rises it will spit two balls of sludge, one long range and one short range. Then it flies up and bombards you with itself as toxic sludge. It's not too hard to dodge the falling sludge, it's harder to dodge the sludge he spits out. Shoot him whenever he rises and dodges the first spit. Then dodge his falling sludge and continue the tactic until it's destroyed. Guardian This game seems to like snakes a whole lot. This cycloptic, humanoid headed snake, is the guardian to the Outer Base. It has no long range attacks, so it relies on its body as a weapon. Its movements are random so stay near a wall for better chance of survival. If you still have the Laser Mercenary, then you can make short work of it. If not, then continue to fire your long-range weapon at it until it falls. Kingpin The Kingpin flies in some sort of mechanical fish. He has three attacks: Homing missile, Crusher, Mechanical Hand. His Homing Missile can be a pain. His Crusher is like the Demolisher, he uses himself as a means to crush you. His last attack is a mid-range attack, which he only uses after the Crusher. My advice is just go ape s!@# on him. Just continually jump and fire at him until he is destroyed. -------------- 7. Walkthrough -------------- Your quest will span six stages. You have to collect three keys to get the good ending in the game. Stage 1 - The City Enemies - Gangster Fighter Salamander Thug Mercenary, Grenadier Master Fighter Begin by choosing your first body. After choosing your body, proceed right, where you will encounter your first enemy. Kill him and continue right. You can jump up the platforms to get a Small Vile, which is protected by a Fighter. Continue right and go up the elevator. Continue right and jump from platform to platform, making sure you don't fall on the spikes. If you took the high route, not only is there a Salamander there, but also a Small Vile and a Heart Capsule. Continue right, pick up the Heart Capsule if needed, and you will encounter three new enemies: A Thug, Grenadier, and a Master Fighter. Kill any, or posses, any enemies and continue to the right. There will be a door to the boss. Robot Snakes Very weak boss{s}. They pop out of the ground and fire a laser beam. Each snake has 2-3 life bars, so with the Salamander it only takes one hit to destroy them. Just wait for one to pop out, hit him as many times as you can and dodge him any way you can. Then repeat until they are destroyed. After the battle, you will find a map in the garbage. You will learn you need three keys to open the door where your girlfriend is. Continuing right, you will find a pit, where a platform will disappear and reappear. Time your jumps and continue right. I suggest posses him, because he is the best character at the moment. Continue left, and you will encounter a laser defense system in the floors and ceilings. Time your jumps right, and continue up and right. The Guru will pose no threat, so continue left. Two Thugs will be protecting the door. Kill them and retrieve the first key in the door. Going to left pit, you can retrieve a Small Vile. Continuing right and a Assault Gangster protects the door to the boss. You find out that your girlfriend is not in the factory, you press on. Stage 3 - City Rooftops Enemies - Gangster White Wizard Master Fighter Ninja Medium Mercenary, MP Invisible Man Vampire Baseball Player Start by Boost Jumping to the top, and if you need a Heart Capsule, go far left. Continue right, taking out, or possessing, the white wizard that appears and/or the Master Fighter. Down below the Master Fighter is protecting a Small Vile. Continue right and a Ninja will appear below, whom you could easily avoid just by jumping to higher grounds. Also, there is a Large Vile on the highest platform. Just drop down the gap and continue left, just watch out for the Medium. Go left and there will be a pit of spikes, with three disappearing/reappearing platforms. Time your jumps and continue down and left. You will encounter an MP, kill him quickly before he fires his missiles. Go up the elevator and left. If you Boost Jump or have a high jumper, you can get the Heart Capsule above you. You will encounter a rare enemies that is unlike any other. The Invisible Man can't be killed, so posses him, or continue down and right. Go right and two Mediums will block your path. If you have a high jumper, you can get the Small Vile above the two Mediums. Continuing right, a Ninja will appear. Go up the elevator, getting the Large Vile if needed, and a new enemy blocks your path. Kill or posses him and continue right. A Ninja and a White Wizard will appear below as well as a new enemy, the Baseball Player. Continue right and the door to the next boss awaits. Stage 4 - The Sewers Enemies - Baseball Player White Wizard Master Fighter Ninja Gangster, Assault Thug Medium Black Wizard Invisible Man Black Ninja Gangster Mercenary, Laser Go right killing and enemy in your way. You will come across a Vampire on a high platform. There is a secret platform step that only appears if you jump on it. If you use the high ground, a Small Vile awaits you. Continue right and beware of the White Wizard that appears above you, unless you took the high grounds. Continue right and there will be a Master Fighter in your way. Above her is a Heart Capsule, if you need it. Watch out for the Ninja if you go after the Heart Capsule, he will be able to attack you on any ground. Continue right and there will be another secret platform step to help you get to another Small Vile. Continue right, and a Assault Gangster and thug will be protecting the path to the next area. Go right and a Medium, and a new enemy will stop you, the Black Wizard. Continue up and another Black Wizard blocks your path. Kill him and fall down. There is a secret area to the left, where you can get a Large Vile, and posses an Invisible Man. Continue right and a new Ninja appears, the Black Ninja. Continue right killing any enemies. Before you go up, the a Grenadier and Black Ninja, are protecting a Large Vile. Go up, but before your go right, there is another secret are to the left. It holds a Large Vile, Heart Capsule, and a powerful new Merc, Laser Mercenary. I suggest to posses him, because he has the strongest attack. Go right and a Gangster will be protecting the door to the next boss. After the battle, you find a ladder to the outer walls of the base. Stage 5 - Outer Base {Key 2} Enemies - Fighter Gangster Thug Mercenary, Grenadier Master Fighter White Wizard Ninja Gangster, Assault Medium Guru Mercenary, MP As soon as you start, a Fighter will run right at you. Continue right until you reach the door to the next area. In the next area, there is a Thug and a new defense system that fires pillars of flame from the ground. At the end of the flame pillars, is a Grenadier, so watch your self. There will be two doors waiting for you at the end. The lower door leads to two Master Fighters protecting a Small Vile. The other door continues your quest. As soon as you enter the upper door, a Master Fighter charges you. Before continuing right, go to the upper door to get the next Key. The Key is the second door to the left, but three White Wizards, two Ninjas, and a laser defense protect it system. When returning to the main area, you will see a Small Vile in the White Wizard room. Continue right and two Assault Gangsters and a Medium will block your path. The next room has a Guru that attacks from above and a Assault Gangster on top of a platform, protecting a Small Vile. The next room has a spike pit with a disappearing/reappearing platform. Time you jump and continue right. Another two doors, protected by a Grenadier and Assault Gangster. The upper door leads to a room where a Medium protects a Large Vile. The lower door continues your quest. As soon as you enter, fire, because there is a Assault Gangster ready for you. Other then an Assault Gangster, this room has a Master Fighter, protecting the door, and a Salamander, protecting a Heart Capsule. The next room's is a spike floor, so you have to jump from platform to platform to get to the next room. There are disappearing/reappearing platforms and watch out for Gurus. Fire your weapon as soon as you get in, because there is a White Wizard charging you. Other that that, there are two Robot below you and a door at the end. If you do challenge the Robots, there will be a Large Vile as your reward. This room has two Black Wizards and two doors. The upper door leads to a Heart Capsule that is protected by two Vampires and a Medium. When you begin to leave this room, a Salamander awaits at the door, and a Black Wizard awaits you after the door. The lower door continues your quest. The next room has two MPs and a Thug that follows you. Just walk through. The last room has a flame defense, three Black Ninjas, a Large Vile, and the door that leads to the boss. Guardian This game seems to like snakes a whole lot. This cycloptic, humanoid headed snake, is the guardian to the Outer Base. It has no long range attacks, so it relies on its body as a weapon. Its movements are random is stay near a wall for better chance of survival. If you still have the Laser Mercenary, then you can make short work of it. If not, then continue to fire you long-range weapon at it until is falls. After the battle, you have a strong sense that your girlfriend is here. You also find a code on the wall that says "GHOST". Stage 6 - Main Base {Key 3} Enemies - Master Fighter Medium Gangster, Assault White Wizard Dragoon Ninja Black Wizard Guru Vampire A Master Fighter will charge you right away, so fire. Take the high road, because not only are there items, but you can miss the spike pits as well. Go up and right. A Guru and a White Wizard will be at the top, so watch your self. Continue right and then go up. If you want an Invisible Man, there is one near a Large Vile. If you go left on the lower level, you will meet your last new enemy, the Dragoon. Continue left, killing any enemy in your way, and there will be a path to a next room. If you need a Heart Capsule, then go up first, before going into the next room. Ninjas, Black Wizards, and a Master Fighters attack you. There first letters to the code are here and they are G and H. Just jump on them to activate them. Go up the ladder and stop before the laser defense. There are secret platforms you must jump on, in order to get the next key hidden in the coded room. The large window in the background has a platform just at its edge. The next is below the marked brick on the ceiling. The rest is only a small jump away. At the end, beware of the Dragoon. Take the high ground to the next letter O. Below the pit is the coded room, so continue up. Go right and you will see a T, but continue right for the S. With the code complete, just fall down where the T is, and open the door to the last Key. Find your way back to the far right ladder and continue up. Kill the Vampire and continue right. Continue right until you get to the locked door. A small cinema will occur and you will dispossess your host and posses your girlfriend. With the strongest host, you must press on to the final boss. Leave the room and continue right, killing everything in your path until you fall down the pit for the final battle. If you saved your girlfriend, you get the good ending, but if you didn't, you get the bad ending. Good Ending After killing the Kingpin, his base explodes and collapses. Your girlfriend watches the sunset at a high peak, near the ocean. You say goodbye to her as she watches two seagulls fly away together and wonders if this was a dream. Bad Ending The base collapses and you appear sitting on a grass field. You look up at the night sky hoping you girlfriend is waiting for you in the afterlife, as you begin to loose you energy. ---------- 8. Secrets ---------- Expert Mode At the title screen, press Up+B+A. You will hear a tone to confirm. Bad Ending Press Down+Select+B Button simultaneously at the title screen. --------- 9. Review --------- Graphics = 3/5 Sound/Music = 3/5 Gameplay = 4/5 Overall = 4/5 Although not without his flaws, a fun action/platform game that could have been more. Graphics are not bad, but not good, just good enough. Some of the enemies could have had more distinctions and animations from each other. Sound and Music fit the game, but can get annoying at times. Gameplay is good. With all the hosts to posses, you get variety, but should of had more hosts. Overall, definitely worth trying out. ------------- 10.
