Although it lacs a save feature, the game is still outstandingly fun yet frustrating at the same time. In Dennis the Menace, you take on the lead of Dennis, armed first with a water gun. As you progress though the game, you gain more weapons and enter deadly levels. You follow the same path as the movie does, going from Mr. Wilsons house to forests and such. Now, to get into the more detailed areas of the game: Graphics: 4.5 out of 5 The graphics of this game are great, yet not outstanding. The 2D characters look as if they are really 3D, yet they are not. A bit more time could have been taken into sprite detail, but the game is still great without it. I give the graphics a 4.5 out of 5. Sound: 5 out of 5 The sound, as well as the music go with the game greatly. These too parts of the game set the mood to the level, wether it be in a forest or at Mr.Wilsons house. I give the sound a great 5 out of 5! Control: 5 out of 5 The control is great as well in this game. It is fluent and smooth through gameplay. This really sets a great impression apon first play of the game. I give the control 5 out of 5! Gameplay: 4.5 out of 5 All together, including control, sound and graphics, the game is amost perfect. The only downside of this game is how hard it is. This game is extremely hard when set to hard mode, which is at default let me tell you. Overall, I give this game a great 4.5 out of 5. It is one of greatest games I have played, but it is also one of the hardest ones too! This is useful to get from platform to platform, or jumping over enemies you are too lazy to fight. Fire - Button 'A' The A button allows you to fire your weapon you currently have selected. Most weapons can be fired while in the combination of a jump. Run - Button 'Y' While holding the Y button and moving around, you are able to increase your speed from a walk to a run. You will need to run lots in this game to gain enough speed for a large jump Change - 'X' Change allows you to change the current weapon you have selected to fire. You can only use change if you have more than one weapon in your inventory. Walk - 'D-Pad' The D-Pad allows you to walk around the screen. Drops bombs from time to time. Acts like bat in Mr.Wilsons house. Strategy : You can't really do much to these unless they come down close to you. Other than that, just avoid their bombs. They are very annoying, but they don't follow you, so you don't have to worry too much --------------------------------------------------------------- Name : Bat Location : Mr.Wilsons House Description : Brown bat that flies in circles around platforms you need to jump to and from. Strategy : The bat flies around in circles near platforms you will have to jump to. If hit in mid air, you will be injured and fall to the ground. Before jumping from platform to platform, make sure to kill all bats in sight. --------------------------------------------------------------- Name : Bowling Ball Location : Mr.Wilsons House Description : Black bowling ball that rolls around the ground and same speed as Dennis. They also roll down stairs Strategy : As far as I know, you cannot kill this enemy, since it is just a ball. Make sure to jump over all balls you see comming toward you. Don't bother trying to attack it. It is very easy to jump. --------------------------------------------------------------- Name : Chipmunk Location : The Park Description : Little chipmunk that throws nuts at you. They physically do not hurt you but their nuts do Strategy : These guys are easy. Since their body's don't hurt you, and only the nuts they throw hurt, you can either dodge the nuts or blow them up with your blow gun or sling shot. --------------------------------------------------------------- Name : Fish Location : The Park Description : Small fish that jumps up and down out of water in the park. These fish are rarely seen since you do not even need to go by the water in the level. Strategy : You can either kill them or just avoid them. Both are easy. This fish is nothing to worry about. --------------------------------------------------------------- Name : Football Location : Mr.Wilsons House Description : Brown football that jumps up and down in verticle position. It may jump from one place to another, or in one place only Strategy : DONT RUN UNDER THEM. Believe me, It is much harder to run under these enemies than is jumping over them. Since they move at a fast pace, there is no point in trying to get under it. Attacks are uneffective to this enemy, so don't try and kill it. --------------------------------------------------------------- Name : Forest Bird Location : The Park Description : Annoying Red bird that flies all around the park levels. They act similar to the bat in Mr.Wilsons House, for they fly around platforms, and screw your jumps up. Strategy : Make sure to kill them before even attempting to make a jump. By killing these enemies, the game will seem alot easier. It only takes one shot with any weapon except your water gun. --------------------------------------------------------------- Name : Frog Location : The Park Description : Green frog that jumps around. Similar to the Purple Cat found in Mr.Wilsons house. Strategy : Make sure to kill them. Don't try to run under or over them or you will be killed. --------------------------------------------------------------- Name : Jumping Yellow Thing Location : The Park Description : A jumping yellow thing. Thats all I can say. It looks similar to a screwed up duck Strategy : This is another one of those wimpy annoying little enemies. Just make sure to kill them before advancing further in a level. It will save you the time and courage. --------------------------------------------------------------- Name : Hare Location : Park Description : Brown hare (rabbit like) that jumps around all areas of the park stages. THEY ARE VERY ANNOYING. Strategy : Do not try to avoid them, KILL THEM. About 4 shots with your blow gun will kill them. They are easy as pie! --------------------------------------------------------------- Name : Kitchen Cup Location : Mr.Wilsons House Description : White kitchen cup that jumps violently around in Mr.Wilsons Kitchen. There are usually 1 or 2 of them together. Strategy : Watch them for a bit when you incounter them. They have a pattern in which they follow. After figuring the pattern out, try and get your way past them. It is not too difficult --------------------------------------------------------------- Name : Mouse Location : Mr.Wilsons House Description : Brown small mouse that runs around the floor and beds. It is usually located in areas of small visibility, such as on beds with behind bedposts. Strategy : These are really easy enemies to kill. The only problem they pose is that they usually run around in low visibility areas. They are killed with one shot of a sling shot. --------------------------------------------------------------- Name : Mr.Wilson Location : Mr.Wilsons House Description : Big old man that runs around with a funny looking smile on his face. Located on upper floor of Mr.Wilsons house. You will know when you see him! Strategy : STAY AWAY. You can't run under him, or jump over him without the help of a jack in a box. You can't hurt him either. Avoid him if you can, and if he sees you, run away. --------------------------------------------------------------- Name : Owl Location : The Park Description : A large owl that floats up and down in the park levels. Do not attempt to jump over them. Strategy : As said before, do not attempt to jump over them. Make sure to kill them before pressing on. It takes about 4 shots with any gun except the water gun ---------------------------------------------------------------- Name : Purple Cat Location : Mr.Wilsons House Description : A Purple Cat that jumps or runs around Mr.Wilsons house. They are found on the middle floor and in the basement. Strategy : They are quite easy to kill, with about 4 shots of a slingshot, but watch out, because they will run into you. They can also be passed by by running under them, or jumping over them. The best overall way though is to kill them. --------------------------------------------------------------- Name : Record Player/Records Location : Mr.Wilsons House Description : A record player, usually located on a desk or drawer, that throws records out at you (3 at a time). Strategy : You cannot kill the record player, or records. Just watch the pattern and try and run (RUN) by it. It is not too hard. The record player itself does not hurt you --------------------------------------------------------------- Name : Red Ball Location : The Park Description : A Red Ball that jumps up and down. May jump vertically or back and forth Strategy : This enemy is attack innaffective. Don't try and kill it. They jump pretty high each time they jump, so it is ok to go under them, but it is easier to jump over them. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ -------------------------------------------------------------------- ==================================================================== -------------------------------------------------------------------- ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +-----------------------------------------------------------------+ |===================== Part 5 - Walkthough =======================| +-----------------------------------------------------------------+ ------------------------- 5.x - Options --------------------------- Before beginning a new game at the introductory screen, you have the ability to chose the options menu to customize your game to your needs. The following will explain what each function in the options menu does: Level: Allows you to chose the level of difficulty for your game. You can chose between easy and hard. I suggest you chose easy! Rest: Rest is really the amount of lives you have. It's default is 5 but you can change it up to 9. I suggest you do this. This is not an easy game Key Option: Allows you to change the default controls of the game. The defaults are: Jump - B Fire - A Run - Y Change - X For more information on controls, go to the controls section of this document (PART 2). Auto Run: If auto run is on, when you are controlling Dennis, he runs auto- matically without you having to hold the Y button. I suggest you keep this off. You may not always want to run in this game. Sound: Allows you to change between Mono and Sterio sound. For me, it doesn't make a difference BGM: Stands for Background Music. Allows you to listen to the 10 different music tracks of the game. Exit: Exits the Options menu. -------------------- 5.0 - Mr.Wilsons House ------------------------ Enemies : Purple Cat, Football, Bowling Ball, Bat, Mr.Wilson, Jumping Shoes, Mouse, Record Player, Record, Kitchen Cups Items : Sling Shot, Blow Gun, When you begin this stage, you will immediatly notice that you have begun in the middle of the house. Above you, a purple cat jumps madly on a ledge. Jump on the table to the right, and then jump up and grab the slingshot. Next, equip it. Now, return to the ground, and run to the left up the stairs, avoiding the falling bowling balls. Once up the stairs, take the right path and kill the cat running back and forth with the sling shot. Continue running to the right until you reach an area where a cat is jumping from ledge to ledge, back and forth over a chair. Remember this area, for you will be returning here later. Continue to the right until you see a red box. Jump onto the box and wit of the jack to pop out. It will send you into the air. Float onto the ledge where the cat is jumping. Make sure to do this fast or Mr.Wilson will catch you. Jump onto the drawer, then onto the suitcase to the left. Shoot the switch with the slingshot and return to the area where the cat is jumping from ledge to ledge. Since the ledge is too high to jump onto, you will have to get hit by the cat jumping back and forth. Once you do this, you will fly upward onto the ledge. Next, kill the cat jumping back and forth. Jump onto the ledge to the left, and in sight you will see a latter hanging down, since you hit the button. RUN on the platform and jump for the latter. Once you are over it, hold up and pull yourself up. Walk to the right and jump on the suitcase with the football on it. Next, jump on the wooden ledge to the right. Kill the mouse on the ledge, and continue on to the right until you reach the far right end of the attic. Jump up the 3 ledges to the golden coin. Alright, 1 down and 4 more to go. Next, you will have to continue running to the left, staying as high as possible, to the other end of the attic. Jump up the jack in the box and recieve coin 2 of five. Exit the attic and return to the befinning of the level. Continue to the right until you reach the purple furniture. Jump up the ledges near the furniture and recieve the 3rd coin near the fish bowl. Continue to the right to where there are 2 shelves. 1 with 2 pots and one with a cactus moving around happily. Get on top of the shelf and jump from shelf to fridge to the end of the level where you will recieve the 4rth coin on the last fridge. Lastly, go into the basement. Go to the left and jump on the shelf with the mouse on it. Kill the mouse and continue going to the left by jumping from platform to platform. Make sure to kill all the bats that you come by. Get the blow gun, and return upstairs, either by jumping from platform to platform, or by dropping to the floor and running (it is easier to jump the platforms). Once out of the basement, continue to the right until you reach the big coin with 4 smaller coins around it. Jump up and get the big coin to complete Mr.Wilsons house - The introductory level ---------------------- 5.1 - The Park 1 ---------------------------- Enemies (for the whole park series) - Airplane, Bunny Rabit, Forest Bird, Frog, Fish, Red Ball, Owl, Chipmunk, Jumping Yellow Thing Items - None Alright. Welcome to The Park series. This series is pretty easy if you take your time through the levels. There are lots of enemies but they don't do much unless you get close to them. When you start off, look over to your right, and you will notice two Red Birds. Kill them. Next, climb the ledges on the tree to the upper level. Continue to the right, killing the frog and hare that roam the area. Enter the first tree to the right by pressing the 'UP' button on the d-pad infront of the tree door. You should now appear at a lower level. Drop to the ground and get the first gold coin. Return to the upper level, and run to the right as far as you can go. Enter the tree, and you will end up at an even higher level with a plane throwing bombs down at you. Kill the 2 hares and enter the tree to the right. To get across the ledge on the right, you are going to have to RUN, or you will fall through the old wood. Run across the ledge and enter the tree to get to a lower leve. Kill the two frogs, then the 2 red birds flying over the hole to the right. Enter the tree to get to a higher level. Jump up the ledgest to get even higher. Move to the far left past the red bird and 2 hares to get coin number 2. Walk back to the right and enter the tree. Notice the blue button to the right. You will be using this button in a second. Climb even higher up the ledges and get coin number 3. Return to the area with the blue button. Jump on the button, and to your left, a road will magically appear. RUN across this road, or you will fall through to below, where you will have to find your way up. Enter the tree on the left. Continue to the left and kill both hares and enter the leftmost tree entrance. Continue left through the next tree entrance to a higher level. Kill the two birds and frog that linger up there, and then enter the leftmost tree. Continue left past the 3 birds and 2 frogs, and climb the leftmost tree ledges to get coin number 4. Now, just below you, is coin number 5. You can either fall through the bad wood or take the tree entrance down to it. ----------------------- 5.2 - The Park 2 --------------------------- Enemies - Same as Park 1 Items - None This may just be the hardest level of them all (so far). In this level, you are pulled on a red wagon by your dog through a huge level. The problem is is that there are tons of enemies that you have to shoot or dodge while the dog pulls you. What makes this worse is that if you fall behind, you may get caught behind an object and then killed. I can't really walk you through this level. It is one of those levels you have to learn how to beat yourself. [TIPS] * Stay on the wagon as much as you can * Don't try and kill enemies, dodge them * The small coins arn't worth your time * Don't fall behind. Stay just a bit ahead of the wagon Thats all I can really say. Good Luck - If you can do it, I can ----------------------- 5.3 - The Park 3 --------------------------- Enemies - Same as Park 1 Items - 1up (included in walkthrough) When you start the level, go to the right. Jump on the swinging bag and get over the hole. Continue to the right past all the red balls. Reach the swinging bag and shoot the two bats. Next, jump on the bag to get to the other side of the hole. Continue to the right and get the one up. Next, return to the left and jump up the first tree with ledges. Kill the two red birds flying by the swinging bag, then jump on it to get to the other side. Kill the chipmunk and bat and jump to a higher level. Kill the plane and chipmunk and recieve coin #1 to the right. Go to the left and climb up the first tree. Jump across the swinging bag and kill the chipmunk. Then recieve coin #2 witch is directly behind the chipmunk. Go to the left, staying on the higher level. Jump on the bag to get to the other side and continue moving to the left. After you reach the 2 duck things, kill them and reach the swinging bag. Note note that there is another swinging bag directly after it. Jump on the first bag, and while you are swinging, jump to the other bag. This is really hard. Continue left past the red balls. Drop down 2 levels and continue to the left. Jump on the swinging bag and recieve coin #3. Jump down another level and to the left you will recieve coin #4. Now follow the walkthrough back to where you get coin #2. Continue to the left past the 2 swinging bags and the red balls. Keep up high and moving leftward. At the far left end of the level, you will find coin number 5. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ -------------------------------------------------------------------- ==================================================================== -------------------------------------------------------------------- ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ----------------------- Part 6 - Rom Hacking ----------------------- RH - Pretty lame ... Rom hacking is the art of breaking into game code and changing values of certain addresses to make a game outstandingly easy. I am not covering game genie, which is a tool used to hack snes roms, but rather I will explain how to hack only game roms downloaded off the internet that are run in emulators. I will only explain how to hack in ZSNES, the greatest snes emul I have ever used (I have used alot). So sit back, grab a drink, and read all of the following - it is needed knowledge: ----------------------- 6.x - Hexadecimal -------------------------- Hexadecimal is the number language used in Zsnes for game roms. For this reason, it would be good to understand Hex (hexadecimal for short). The following is a chart for hex you can study: Decimal | Hexadecimal ---------------------- 1 | 1 2 | 2 3 | 3 4 | 4 5 | 5 6 | 6 7 | 7 8 | 8 9 | 9 10 | A 11 | B 12 | C 13 | D 14 | E 15 | F 16 | 11 17 | 12 18 | 13 19 | 14 20 | 15 21 | 16 ... ... 50 | 32 100 | 64 By studying this, you will notice that hex introduces 5 new digits, and since there are only 10 number digits, hex brings in the letters A-F. It works the same way as decimal, except with 5 extra digits. STUDY THE CHART Knowing hex will help you when you wish to change a value to a specific need. ------------------- 6.xx - The Problem with roms ------------------- Ok. You got hex down, but there is only one problem with game roms. This is pretty much why i am not just putting all my codes down here. The problem is is that not all roms are the same. This means that unless you have the exact same rom as me, my codes wont work on yours. So don't go writing game rom faqs for this game - You will have alot of hate mail. I am willing to teach you how to make codes though, and you could write a guide about that!! -------------------- 6.0 - Hacking Courage ------------------------- As you should know by now, health is measured as hearts, also known as courage. As your courage goes down, you are losing health, thus making it easier for an enemy to kill you. What we want to do is make it so our health does not decrease so we won't die. To do this we will need to use the following steps: 1.) Load Dennis the Menace 2.) Begin Gameplay 3.) Press esc to get to ZSNES menu 4.) Select Cheat Menu 5.) Select 1 byte comparative search Ok. It is set up. Return to gameplay and get hit. Go back into the cheat menu and select 'less than equal' which is equal to '> than last'. Return to game and get hit again. Repeat the process until you have one result left. Double click 'view results' and select the result. Now is where the hex comes in. Change the value of how many lives you want in hex - ONE BYTE ONLY = 99. If you set the default to hex than the highest will be FF which equals 255. Here is a mathematical equasion for the health Algoratham: Courage = Heart * 3 so if i wanted 2 health... courage = heart * 3 courage = 2 * 3 courage = 6 you see, each heart is stored as 3hex in game memory. For this reason, if you wanted 6 hearts, by simply changing the value of courage to 6 would not give you 6 hearts, but rather 2.
