Game Objective: The object in Dexterity is to flip over all the tiles in each level while collecting points and avoiding the monsters before time runs out. After completing all thirty levels, you'll get a chance to free Princess Lufiea from the final boss. That square is labeled with the word "You." You must flip over all the tiles from the lighter color to the darker color before time runs out. If time runs out before you complete the level, you'll lose one life. You'll restart the level, but any tiles that have been flipped over will remain that way. Don't worry about time running out. It rarely happens (except for the later levels, then it happens quite frequently). When the clock dips under 60, the music will speed up, and the monsters will move even faster. If you aren't even close to done, you're screwed. Not every square will be a tile. There are also other objects that will appear during gameplay. These are the symbols I'll use in my diagrams, and a brief description of each: XXX Immovable Block - You can push this all day, but it won't budge. It just gets in the way. xxx Moveable Block - These blocks can be pushed. Use them to kill monsters, or push them into corners to collect bonuses. ### Hole in the Ground – Similar to an Immovable Block. It appears as a black square. III Horizontal Bridge - Used to connect two or more areas of the level separated by the holes. This is the only safe zone in the game. Monsters cannot go on bridges. E Vertical Bridge - Just like horizontal bridges, but they span up and down <<< Warp to Right Side – Both start to appear in Round 15. They will >>> Warp to Left Side - send you to the other side of the floor. Very convenient. I'll will also use "OOO" to indicate a tile that has been flipped over. Terminology: I'll use certain words in my explanations to describe how many tiles have been flipped over, which tiles to flip over, etc. The word "empty" will be used to indicate that there are tiles that have not been flipped over yet. The word "full" means the opposite; tiles that have been flipped over. "Filling" means flipping over tiles. If an enemy is "trapped," that means it is cornered in a small part of the floor, either by blocks, holes, or a combination of the two. That enemy cannot get out and the open and flip tiles. Spawning refers to the four-step process an enemy uses to appear on the floor. See the section on enemies for more details. The numbering of columns goes left to right (the far left column is the first, the one to the right is the second, etc.) The numbering of rows goes top to bottom (the very top row is the first, the one under it is the second, etc.) If something is above you, it's closer to the top than you are. It it's below you, it's closer to the bottom. Controls: D-Pad – Moves you around on the floor, pushes blocks. You can push blocks to kill monsters. To do so, get the block between you the monster, then push it all the way to the wall. The reverse is also true. You can also empty any tiles between you and a flipped one in the same manner. You may notice that the B Button has obvious function. That's not true. When the monster starts respawning, you'll be holding the egg. The monster will not appear, and you can use the egg as a weapon against the other monsters. To kick the egg, press B again. Stunned monsters can also be picked up they same way. Extremely useful, but it's kinda makes the game way too easy. If you don't hit another enemy, don't worry. The one you're holding with die after it hits the wall. The Enemies: There are five kinds of monsters on the board. They have two goals. To keep the floor empty and to kill you. They mainly focus on that first task, and wait for you to make some kind of mistake. Fly – the most timid of the enemies. It moves in a very irregular pattern. It's nothing special, but it can be annoying sometimes. Ghost – The ghost is the most predictable monster. It will always move side to side and will only flip tiles in it's current row. Starting with Round 11, it will also move up and down and proceed in the same way. Snowman – The snowman is the most enraged monster. If you are in the same row as the snowman, he'll charge at you. When he gets to the other side, he'll flip tires and go back to the other side of the floor. The snowman is probably the most helpful enemy too. It can restore the tiles that the hoppy destroys. Squid – The squid is the only enemy that can push blocks, so don't get between him and the wall. It can also destroy and create blocks at random. It flips tiles over in similar pattern as the fly does. Hoppy – The hoppy is the enemy that doesn't really look like anything. It's the most annoying enemy. It will destroy tiles on the board, making the level harder to complete. It can even block off parts of the floor, making the level impossible to complete. For instance: +-------- ¦ ¦###¦ +---+---+ ¦###¦ H ¦ +---+---+ The tile in the very top left corner is blocked off by holes to the right and below it. Since you can get to the tile, you can't flip it over, and therefore you cannot complete the level. Fortunately, a hoppy will only destroy 3 tiles each level. If there is a snowman on the same level, he can fill in the holes and restore the tiles. Monsters cannot cross bridges. Use this to your advantage. When each level starts, there will be eggs in some of the corners. This is where the monsters will spawn. There are 4 stages to spawning: egg, hatching, smoke cloud, and appearance. Monster will always spawn in the same corner. The following letters will be used to indicate their spawn points: G Ghost F Fly P Squid H Hoppy S Snowman Basic Strategy: You should follow the same basic pattern to each level. First, trap any ghosts, flies, hoppies, and snowman in their spawning corners. That way, they can't kill you and can't flip over any tiles. Next, kill any squids that are on the board, so they don't kill you first. After the monsters have been neutralized, you can proceed to flipping over most of the tiles on the board. Since you trap some monsters, the tiles they are standing on are empty. So, you'll have to kill them. After killing the trapped monsters, DO NOT flip over any empty tiles that remain. You'll end the level early without a chance to collect any bonuses. Next, push any remaining blocks into the corner to collect you bonuses. Now, you may finish the level by flipping over any remaining empty tiles. Bonuses: You can collect bonuses in Dexterity by pushing blocks into corners. Those blocks will turn into prizes and power-ups, which can either increase your score or help you end the level. Bonuses appear randomly, but you can expect to find the following objects: Cherries – Add 100 points to your score Apples – Add 200 points to your score Turnips - Add 400 points to your score Watermelons – Add 800 points to your score Hammer - Temporarily stuns all enemies on the floor Hourglass - Adds 10 seconds to the time (It appears as 9 seconds, but that's because one second will tick off before the 10 are added.) "B" Icon - Any monsters not standing in a corner will turn into a block (does not apply to spawning monsters). The monsters will all respawn the same time a few seconds later. "F" Icon - All nonspawning monsters will turn into the before mentioned fruit bonuses. A monster will not respawn until a few seconds few you picked up the fruit bonus it turned into (for example, if a ghost turned into an apple, the ghost won't come back until after you've picked up the apple). Heart - If you pick up a heart, you'll earn one extra life. Some blocks will just disappear if you push them into a corner. It's rare, but it happens. You'll just have to live with it. Level Maps: For each level, I've included a drawing of the floor and a short strategy for completing the level. I suggest filling the board in a clockwise pattern, from the starting point, to the left side, up, and then around. It should only take about 20 seconds to finish this level. As he's going down, start moving blocks to trap both the fly and the snowman in that corner. Start off by filling the 4 by 4 section with the fly in the bottom left corner. While you do this, the snowman should move to the top left corner. Quickly trap both the snowman and the hoppy in that corner, something like this: +-------------------- ¦ H ¦ ¦ ¦ ¦xxx¦ ¦---+---+---+---+---+ ¦ ¦ ¦ S ¦ ¦xxx¦ ¦---+---+---+---+---+ ¦###¦ E ¦###¦###¦###¦ ¦---+---+---+---+---+ Slowly push them farther and farther into the corner, but be careful. If the hoppy jumps on a tile right next to the block, the block is stuck there You can't use it to kill any enemies until the hoppy is killed. Fill in the 3 by 8 strip of tiles formed after trapping the hoppy and snowman. Then, kill both of them with just one block, if possible. Fill in the 2 by 4 area leftover, then fill in any empty tiles in the 4 by 4 section. If the hoppy closes itself off on a single empty tile, try to lure the snowman to that same row. When he charges, he'll restore the tile, allowing you to fill it in. It's useless to trap the squid, because it can push blocks too. After trapping the fly and ghost, kill the squid and start filling in the floor. When you're almost done, kill both the fly and ghost and finish the level. While waiting for it to respawn, start flipping tiles. Get into the top left corner and hold the B button before the snowman's egg appears. When it does appear, you'll be holding it in your hands. Let go of the B button, get in the same row or column as the squid, face it, and press B again. You'll kick the egg at the squid and kill it. If you miss, just wait for another egg in the top left corner. After the squid is gone, you should have no problem finishing the level. You've have to constantly take out the monsters. Use the blocks first, then the punt techniques. The hoppies are the obvious first priority, so worry about killing them. Fill in tiles when you can. Don't waste any time trying to trap monsters. Just go ahead and kill them. At this point, time bonuses would really come in handy. The Bonus Rounds: After you complete 4 levels, you'll get to play a bonus round. There's only one purpose to the bonus round. Score points. When the Bonus Level starts, 12 tiles will flash certain tiles are flashing. That's where the prizes (3 cherries, 3 apples, 2 turnips, 2 watermelons, and 1 ice cream) and the skull (which will end the bonus round) are located. You have 30 seconds to get all the prizes after the tiles stop flashing. The bonus round ends when time runs out, you uncover the skull, or get all the prizes. There are 4 patterns, and they'll random appear. You will not see the same pattern until you've seen them all. Here are the four patterns. The final boss is a giant ghost. And boy will it come after you. The ghost can flip over tiles, two columns wide, from underneath it all the way down to the bottom of the screen. Two little ghosts are also helping her out. They can also flip over multiple tiles at once. They also jump up and down creating holes in the floor (just like the hoppies). It's more patience than strategy. First, stun the little ghosts. Then, pick up the stunned ghosts and kick them at the big ghost. It's going to take 15-20 hits (I didn't bother to count) defeat the ghost. There is also a time limit on this level. Fortunately, it's an overgenerous 500 seconds. You should finish off the ghost in about half that time. The Ending: S P O I L E R ! ! After you take out the ghost, your guy will walk to the starting point and catch a black orb. It will explode in your hand. Then a warp will appear in the right wall. You'll walk into the next room and find Princess Lufiea against the wall. She'll walk over to you and give you a kiss (gee, how original...). Then the credits roll.
