ABOUT THE GAME Double Dragon II: The Revenge is your classic beat 'em up. You move from one side of the screen to the other, clearing out all the bad guys in between. You play as Billy Lee (1st player) or as his twin brother Jimmy (2nd player). The game allows co-op play (2 player A) to help you out although in the harder levels, there are more bad guys. In 2 player B, you can inflict damage upon each other too. The goal is to avenge the death of Billy's girlfriend Marian, hence "the revenge." There are three settings: PRACTICE, WARRIOR and SUPREME MASTER. The enemies get harder as you increase the difficulty, also you can ONLY reach the final boss on SUPREME MASTER. PRACTICE - ends after MISSION 3 WARRIOR - ends after MISSION 8 SUPREME MASTER - full game ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 03. CONTROLS Directional pad = move the character in the desired area B = punch left A = punch right B or A + facing away from enemy = kick B+A = jump forward on the D-pad+B+A = knee thrust*** B+A and then B+A in the air = tornado kick B+A and then B or A in the air = dropkick after landing from a dropkick, push B = uppercut*** getting up after being knocked down, push B = uppercut*** get in close to an enemy, throw a few punches = you'll hold them down, press the attack button towards them to continue punching or the attack button away to throw them (e.g. if the enemy is on the left, press B to keep puching or A to throw them) ***These are the two deadly moves you should master immediately. You'll rack up some serious points and clear enemies fast. The key to the uppercut is to fake with the dropkick and land right above the enemy and then throw the uppercut. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 04. MISSION 1: INTO THE TURF Alrighty, your first thugs approach you but they're push-overs. Here is a good time to get some practice in with those special moves. Of course, you could just punch them down but because they put up only a little fight, practice is better. In the second screen you face a stronger pair of thugs. Again, practice those special moves, especially the knee thrust. Another thug appears so clear him before you can move on. Watch the ladder in the third screen, two female thugs will climb down from there. You can easily knee thrust or dropkick them off. On practice and warrior, this will kill them. A third thug will climb down when you've eliminated those two so kick her off too. Those thugs from before return so knee thrust the three of them and then climb the ladder. Now up top, walk left to the door and two women appear, one with a weapon. Knock her down first, pick up her weapon (stand over it and press B or A) and then use the weapon against the two women. Two more show up so knock them down too. Go right, jump up to the next level (B+A) and thugs appear from the next door. Watch out because they carry a throwing knife. When you knock them down, the knife can become yours so use it. Keep throwing the knife at the next two thugs who appear and then climb the next ladder. OK, now it's the stronger thugs again. Knock them down with some dropkicks. When you see the ladder climb up but wait as there are two thugs waiting for you. Climb back down and wait for them to descend. A simple punch will knock them off the ladder and to their death. A few other thugs with pipes appear. Get the pipe and either whack them with it (attack towards them) or throw it at them and knock them both down (attack away from them). BOSS: The simple way is just to use that knee thrust. Hit him twice and then he will disappear for a bit. When he returns, a third knee thrust will send him away for good. Don't trade punches with him or else he'll grab you and throw you around. You have to keep moving and perform fast attacks like knee thrusts or dropkicks. Another way to defeat him is to lure him all the way near the stairs and then knee thrust him off of the platform. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 05. MISSION 2: AT THE HELIPORT I hope your jumping skills are good. Walk right and then jump down to the lower platform. As you land, do a dropkick to knock the two bad guys down. Another way to easily defeat them is throw a few punches, which should allow you to hold them down, and then press the opposite button to throw them off of the platform. Climb down two pipes to get to the lowest level and then walk right. Jump over the gap and then attack the thug. Do NOT use knee thrusts here or else you'll knee thrust yourself right off of the platform too. Another thug is on the upper level, so he'll climb down (dropkick him off of the pipe). Climb up three levels but on the third, watch out for the helicopter! As soon as you hear the bullets, climb back down to avoid them and then wait on that lower level. Enemies will drop out of the helicopter (thugs, female thugs) so you can just dropkick them off. If you have two players, one player can jump over to the platform on the left. Enemies will follow you but they can't jump there, however, you cannot attack them either (which is why only one player should do this). The other player can then attack these enemies who are just "sitting ducks." The third set of enemies are a little bit different, pseudo-ninjas. They move a bit faster but are still easy here. Climb the final pipe, walk over to the right and jump down (or fall off, it doesn't matter). A few more of those thugs return so take them out. BOSS: You have to face two very fast ninjas but you can beat them quite easily. As soon as the music starts, start knee thrusting the right of the screen. You should be able to kill him before he even appears! The other ninja, you should time your dropkicks just right so you miss and land right over him and then attack with an uppercut. Watch out for his ninja stars. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 06. MISSION 3: BATTLE IN THE CHOPPER This level is short but it can be frustrating if you're wreckless. Every so often, the door of the helicopter will open and try to suck you out. Stay in the middle of the copter and if you're on the left side, don't knee thrust or else you may find yourself flying out the door when it opens. First up are the pseudo-ninjas. Just keep up with the dropkicks and uppercuts. Next are the thugs with pipes. You have to face a few of them so after the first round, wait near the door and knee thrust the second set. BOSSES: You have to face two guys who look like Abobo (first boss in the first Double Dragon) except he has hair. Fortunately, you only have to face them one at a time. Two knee thrusts is all it takes to kill one. If you're on the left, don't fight too close. He'll throw you behind him and you may end up near the helicopter door when it opens. If you're playing on PRACTICE, the game ends here. For WARRIOR and SUPREME MASTER players, lets move on to MISSION 5. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 07. MISSION 4: UNDERSEA BASE The tougher thugs return and now they have boomerang-like weapons. When they throw it, quickly move up or down. You can't get this weapon when you knock them down though. There's two rounds of these guys followed by two rounds of female thugs. Finish them off, move to the right and then go into the elevator. CAREFUL: Do not walk all the way to the bottom of the screen or else you'll jump into the water. Down the elevator shaft and pseudo-ninjas appear from both sides. CAREFUL: Do not use any special attacks or jump here, you'll just hurt yourself. Normal punches and kicks will do. A second set of pseudo-ninjas will arrive so use the same strategy against them. MINI-BOSS: Now you face a REAL strong guy. His attacks are tough and he can drain your energy quite fast. Knock him down with kicks (you can stand further away from him with kicks). When he's down walk over him. When he appears, you should be right over him so continue with the punches. He shouldn't be able to hit you. Keep it up until he's down for the count. Move right and avoid the dropping spikes. There's no time limit so be patient and take it one spike at a time. Let it drop first and then as it's moving back up and it's safe, start walking under it. Walk all the way to the door. You can't get in yet, instead, enemies fall from the hole in the ceiling. Stand under the hole and do tornado kicks as the enemies fall (or dropkicks if you're skills aren't up to par). You have to face four female thugs and then four male punks. Since you can't move up or down, it's harder to avoid the women's bombs (throw them back at them) and the punk's knives. This is why it's key to tornado kick them so you drain their energy quicker. BOSS: Only one pseudo-Abobo now but with the dimensions of the cave, it makes it tougher. Lure him to the open part and then use your knee thrust. You can't use the same strategy as the mini-boss because this dude moves around more and will punch you back or throw you around. If you have lots of health and don't mind wasting it, you can do knee thrusts up close near the spiked ceilings. You will lose health but it is the boss of the level and your meter will re-fill. The level isn't over yet as once you enter the door, you'll be on a moving conveyor. Quickly press down until you're on the non-moving part of the platform. Jump across to the other platform, walk to the edge and then walk up to the other door and enter to finish the level. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 08. MISSION 5: FOREST OF DEATH We're back outdoors again. You immediately face two female thugs, one with a weapon. Knock her down, take the weapon and then defeat those enemies. Another set shows up (one with a weapon too) so let her walk onto the screen first and then knock her down. Walk right and hop down to the next level. A few punches and an uppercut will send the thug off the cliff. Don't knee thrust or else you'll go down with him. Head down a little bit until you see the ladder and then climb down to the bottom level. A pair of female thugs are on the left so take them out. You can throw them into the water if you want. A second pair arrives so repeat those steps. Now walk left to the waterfall. Walk up and take the higher route. You only have to make two jumps. The first jump is easier but for the second jump, make sure you're near the very edge of the platform before you leap. Walk over and hop up twice. Enemies will descend from the vines so dropkick them off. Knock them out and two more will join. Finish off these thugs quickly and then climb one of the vines (it doesn't matter which one). At the top, you'll face more of the stronger thugs, with dynamite! Don't dropkick them or else you'll eat a face full of TNT. Throw it back at them or knee thrust them off of the cliff. There's another pair of them so do it again. MINI-BOSS: Here you face two pseudo-Abobos again. These ones are easier since you can knee thrust them off the cliff but make sure you're about halfway on the platform or else you'll go off it too. Also, avoid attacking from the right, as they'll flip you over the cliff. Move over to the right and now you'll face ninjas in green suits. They do sweeping kicks so stay in the air. They're slower than the ninjas in mission 2 so you shouldn't have too much trouble. A few knee thrusts each will do it. You have to climb the tank to the top to get it to stop and make the enemies appear. There isn't really a strategy avoiding the steam, you just have to time your jumps right. A pair of strong thugs with dynamite appear. Knock them off the top and then follow them down. Stand on the first set of wheels and when they try to jump up to you, dropkick them off. Another thug emerges so follow suit. Pseudo-ninjas appear, so do the same. BOSS: You have to face the strong guy again. Stay where you are and do dropkicks. I know it's slow but it works and you won't lose any lives. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 09. MISSION 6: MANSION OF TERROR Another short mission but it could eat up all your lives! Leap up the platforms but watch out for the falling flames. The disappearing platforms go: close to you, high and to the left, and then below the previous one; then repeat. You must jump from platform to platform as the one you're on is fading away. Don't worry about the other one not being there as it will appear. It looks something like this (the numbered platforms are the ones that fade): --(2)-- --(1)-- ---- --(3)-- ---------^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Get to the left and then jump over the higher platform and then move to the left doorway. Pseudo-ninjas appear so knock them out. A second set then emerges so get rid of them too. Finally, a pair of green ninjas appear and they are a tad easier this time for some reason. Knee thrusts for all. A second set appears so finish them off. That's all the enemies for this level. Walk to the left, jump over the small gap and walk to the left all the way until the platform ends. Now, you'll see the second set of disappearing platforms and the exit to the level above you. Watch the pattern first so you know where to go. You have to make six well timed jumps here. Again, leap as the platforms flash. There's no time limit so don't worry about rushing through it. Once you get to the final flashing platform, make sure you're on the far right of it when you jump to the exit. You don't want to mess the final jump at all so take the extra second and time the jump right. If you miss the EXIT jump, you'll fall into that lone spike at the bottom and die. The room looks something like this: EXIT --(5)-- --------- --(4)-- -(3)- -(2)- --(1)-- ------ ^^^^^^^^^^------------^-------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10. MISSION 7: TRAP ROOM Right away some difficult jumps. Ugh. Jump onto the platform moving right and move towards the middle of it. You cannot just drop to the conveyor moving left because you'll fall onto your back and roll right into the spikes. The room looks something like this, the straight lines are non-moving platforms, the arrows are the direction the conveyor moves, the up arrows are spikes and the X's are where you should jump from: START _______ X O<<<<<>>>>O O<
