INTRODUCTION G0100 =============================================================================== Welcome to 'Family Jockey' for the NES, released by Namco in 1987. This guide uses Shift-JIS to display Japanese characters in .txt form. If you cannot see them automatically and just see some garbled font, set your browser encoding or file viewer manually. Suggestions, comments or errors - tell me about it. Enjoy! =============================================================================== 02.) BASICS G0200 =============================================================================== To progress through the game, one must place in the top 4 in each race. You gain prize money for position 1 through 3, and an extra bonus for shattering the course record. A secondary objective is also beating the high score of the game. Main Menu: `````````` Switch between options with SELECT. Confirm with the A button. 1 Player or 2 Player mode mean either racing just yourself against CPU opponents or with another human player as well. Race Only is just like it says, just the race. Family Game is racing but also includes betting for those races. The top of the main menu has the high score. You win money from winning races, but also betting. The current high score is displayed up there once you rake up some points. Controls: ````````` D-Pad Move the horse left and right on the track. A Button Whip the horse to race faster, else you will soon be on the losing end. B Button Jump, only used for jumping over actually placed obstacles. You can still jump at any point in the race but there is no point to it as it is slower than pacing along. START Pause and Resume To whip the horse, bash the A button fast. Holding down won't do though, and a turbo controller is not going to work either as far as I know. Do not overwork your horse as the energy will quickly run dry on longer races and then you will soon end up losing places, or possible retire. When an obstacle is coming up, jump over it with good timing. You may need to slow down a bit, especially when you are far up ahead. The screen does not give you must to work with and then it is easier to fall. Back off a bit, even if it means others will catch up a few meters, it is still better than crashing as crashing can mean disappearing out of the screen. Each obstacle has a marker a few meters ahead so you know when it is coming. Display: ```````` The top half is the racing track with all the horses. The last horse will always be in the same screen as the first one, and if the last one is falling too far you retire automatically. Whereas this sounds like a bonus, being dead last almost always means you cannot catch up any more. The bottom of the screen is the more important data. The left is the clock. The roman numerals on the right is the current racing positions. If you are playing for betting, this is where you should check which horse you are looking for positioning. Underneath are the players energy and speed. 1P and 2P are for Player 1 and 2. When the bar is empty, the horse can no longer run at fast speeds. Once a player passes through the finish line, his or her time is recorded next to the speed. Items: ``````` Small coins appear on the track during the race. They are pre-set before the race starts (but still a random location from race to race). They give you a temporary boost in the following area: Sp - Speed St - Stamina G - Guts J - Jump T - Turbo Star - Recover Energy (Good) Skull - Lose Energy (Bad) Betting: ```````` Four people can make bets on the upcoming race. The top of the screen has the current race to bet on, and all the numbers are for picking a 1-2 finish. This means, the first number is the winner and the second is the runner-up. The numbers next to that are the odds. If you have never bet before, this means the amount of money you get returned 1:xx. If you bet 100 yen on a 19.2 winning combination, then you get 1920 back after the race. Odds change as bets are made, usually reflecting bets made on a certain pick. If one person bets large on 1-2 for example, it will be less valuable to bet on this for the next person. Each member of the stereotypical family (Mom, Dad, Son and Daughter) can make up to three bets. You can even make more than 1 bet on the same outcome, not that there is much point in doing that instead of just one larger bet. You do not have to make three bets, and not even one if you want to pass. Use the directional pad to input the numbers. The next person automatically gets his or her turn when all three bet slots are full. When your bet is set before that, press SELECT while picking a combination and the slot stays empty. Tips: ````` - Block other horses by simply riding in front of them. If they bump into you they will give you a boost and lose speed themselves. Take care of this with upcoming obstacles though, as they might bump you into them. Of course you can try to use this trick to your advantage as well, but they tend to be better at jumping than human players. Also take care not to bump into them while you ride along, as it just wastes energy. - Take the inner line when possible, it is the shortest path and spends less energy on racing. Keep in mind that there is often deep mud at those locations so you will be slower. If you know the track already then you will also know when not to go really deep in the inner track, but you can still go relatively close to it - the less-dark mud. - Look who the favorite and strong opponent are. They tend to be at it in the front and you will want to steer clear of it when possible. - Naturally, learn the tracks and know when to turn, keep away from deep mud and also remember obstacle positions. There are many tracks but if you fail a lot you will learn the later ones in good time as well. =============================================================================== 03.) For long races this should be higher. Guts: For obstacles this does not decrease energy so quickly. Jump: The higher the number, the better at jumping over obstacles. Turbo: When picking up a turbo, the faster the horse will run with it. Type: With higher 'type' the horse is more adaptable to different conditions such as rain. =============================================================================== 04.) TRACKS G0400 =============================================================================== Before the race begins, you see the race stats and line-up. The top line is the round, name and distance. The second line is weather condition and type of track (Lawn or Dirt). On the right are the prices for finishing first, second and third respectively. The third line is the course record. Underneath are the racers, their number, name and the right is their color. The icons present predictions by bookies. The circle with another circle inside is the favorite. The empty circle is a strong opponent, whereas the triangle is a dark horse, literally. These predictions are only important to know for betting purposes, and mainly based on the horses stats applied to the current race course. It does not take in account your actual racing skills, or that of Player 2.
