THE PLOT 500 years ago, the shapeshifter Shang Tsung was banished from the Outworld to the Mother Realm (Earth) for his crimes. There, with the aid of his pupil Goro, a hideous half-human dragon, he was to atone for his crimes by unbalancing the furies of the realm, allowing his master Shao Kahn and his minions to enter the dominion and rule forever. He was defeated. He returned to the Outworld a failure, facing execution at the hands of Shao Kahn, supreme ruler of the Outworld, the Astral Planes of Shokan and the surrounding kingdoms. With the apparent demise of Goro, his fate seemed sealed. But Tsung told Kahn of his plan for revenge, a plot so evil and twisted even Kahn was persuaded to grant him one final opportunity to redeem himself. He cleverly lured his adversaries to the bizarre Outworld where they would face a new challenge-- a tournament hosted by Shao Kahn himself. Today, The Tournament Begins... Again! _______________________________________________________________________________ ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ III. GAME BASICS _______________________________________________________________________________ ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ _______________________________________________________________________________ III. 1. GETTING STARTED ------------------------------ Game Introduction ------------------------------ MORTAL KOMBAT II was first released on the Arcade platform in 1993. In 1994, the "home system" versions-- such as the GameBoy version-- of it were released. And in 1997, MORTAL KOMBAT II was re-released on MORTAL KOMBAT 1&2 (which besides the first screen to choose which game you wish to play, and the missing legal screens, it is identical to the original game). The GameBoy version of MORTAL KOMBAT II is based on the Arcade version. Game Setup ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Two players fight each other in a one-on-one match to the death. Whoever wins two rounds first wins the match. The matches are comprised of all the rounds against an opponent. A player wins by either defeating their opponent, or by having the most amount of life left at the end of the round. If there is a tie, then you get a "GAME OVER". If neither player is declared winner after round 5, then both players will receive a "GAME OVER". Each character is armed with various unique special moves to aid them in the fights. If a player wins two rounds, without letting the time run out, "FINISH [HIM/HER]" will be displayed, and they will have the option of performing a finishing move on their defeated opponent. Characters ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ There are three types of characters in the game: regular, secret, and boss. Regular characters include: Liu Kang, Sub-Zero, Kitana, Reptile, Mileena, Scorpion, Jax, and Shang Tsung. Smoke and Jade are the only secret characters, and Shao Kahn is the only boss character. The regular characters are immediately selectable from the start of the game. Codes or cheats are required to enable the secret and boss characters. You will have to fight all of the regular characters, and then battle the boss, Shao Kahn, to win the game. The secret characters will not be fought unless a code or cheat is entered. ------------------------------- Getting Started ------------------------------- Getting Started ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ After turning on the game and waiting through the legal screens, you will come to the MORTAL KOMBAT II Title screen. From either that screen or the screens that follow, press the "Start" button to be presented with the Main Menu. Main Menu ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ The Main Menu offers two choices: "START GAME" and "OPTIONS". "START GAME" will, obviously, begin the game by presenting the Character Selection Screen. "OPTIONS" will present you with options to modify your game. Use the D-pad on the "OPTIONS" menu to modify the difficulty and credits, and press the "Start" button to exit. Character Selection ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ After choosing "START GAME" from the Main Menu, you will be taken to the Character Selection screen. Character Selection Screen: _______________________________ | __ __ | | / \ / \ | | \__/ \__/ | | +------+------+------+------+ | | | | | | | | | | {A} | {B} | {C} | {D} | | | | | | | | | | |______|______|______|______| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | {E} | {F} | {G} | {H} | | | | | | | | | | +------+------+------+------+ | | | ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ While on the Character Selection screen, use the D-Pad to move the flashing frame onto the character you wish to play as. To learn how to play as characters other than the ones on this screen, look into the individual character sections in chapter "IV. CHARACTERS" or chapter "V. SECRETS/CODES". When you are ready, press the "Start" button, or simply wait, to continue with your selection. The duration of time for selecting your character is limited to about sixteen seconds. Not depicted in the diagram above, the eight squares have pictures of the selectable characters' faces. I have typed in letters to show where each character is located on the screen. Use the Legend below to find who is where. ..... LEGEND .......................... : A = Liu Kang E = Shang Tsung : : B = Sub-Zero F = Mileena : : C = Kitana G = Scorpion : : D = Reptile H = Jax : :.....................................: Tower Progress ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ After selecting your character, you will be taken to the Tower Progress screen. This is just to show you who your opponents are and in what order you will fight them in; between each match, it will appear to display your progress. You will begin at the bottom and work your way up after each match won. You will first fight each of the regular characters and then battle Shao Kahn. Which order you fight the regular characters is always random, with the exception of Shang Tsung; Shang Tsung is always the last regular character fought. The match with the question mark ("?") will be skipped unless a code or cheat has been entered to fight the secret character of that match. -------------------------------- Match Aspects -------------------------------- After completing everything in the previous sub-section, you will begin the match. Below is what the screen looks like and what each meter represents. Match Screen: _______________________________ |_{A}________] {B} [________{C}_| |¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯| | | | {D} | | | | _ _ | | (_) (_) | | .-+. o o .+-. | | '-o| ' ' |o-' | | / \ / \ | | / ) ( \ | |===/===/===============\===\===| |===============================| |:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::| ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ ..... LEGEND ............................................. : A = Player 1's Powerbar C = Player 2's Powerbar : : B = Timer D = Game Text : :........................................................: Powerbar ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ The Powerbars display the amount of that player's remaining health. Damaging attacks will reduce the Powerbar. When a Powerbar is completely depleted, that player will lose the round. Each players' name is displayed on their Powerbar. If you win with a full Powerbar, "FLAWLESS VICTORY" will be displayed. Dragon Symbol ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Not pictured in the diagram, after a round is won, a small circle-- which is supposed to be a dragon symbol-- appears under the winner's Powerbar. This shows how many rounds a character has won in a match Timer ¯¯¯¯¯ The Timer displays how much game time you have left before the round is up. Each round lasts 99 seconds. If the time runs out, "TIME IS UP" will be displayed, and the player with the most life on their Powerbar wins. If both players have the same amount of life left, then you will get a "GAME OVER". Game Text ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ When certain things occur, text will appear to let you know what is happening. ------------------------------ Match Environment ------------------------------ The Stages ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ The stages are the backgrounds that are fought at each match. There are three different stages: "The Pit II", "Kombat Tomb", and "Goro's Lair". Starting with "The Pit II", matches will always alternate between that and the "Kombat Tomb". "Goro's Lair" is only fought at when battling Smoke and Jade. _______________________________________________________________________________ III. 2. OF PLAYING ---------------------------- Reading Comprehension ---------------------------- Throughout this document, there will be terms that you must know to understand the material-- this sub-section covers those terms. I have spelled out all of the input controls to prevent confusion and to simplify things. Input Notes ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ • All moves can only be executed on the ground unless otherwise noted. • You can hold Block to prevent your character from moving while executing difficult input controls. Just make sure to release Block before pressing the last input. D-Pad Directions ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ "Up", "Down", "Towards", and "Away" all refer to directions on the D-Pad. "Towards" and "Away" are either Left or Right on the D-Pad. Which one it is depends on which one will move you either towards or away from your opponent. Phrases ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ The following words will be used in describing how to perform certain moves. • "Hold": Press down and hold that button for at least the amount of time stated. You can begin holding before the round begins. Inputting ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ There are three ways that moves will be executed: ",", "+", and "Hold". With the exception of "Hold" moves, if you wait too long between pressing the buttons, the move will not work. "," : Example: "Input controls: Down, Away, 'B' button" Description: First, press and release Down, then press and release Away, and finally, press the "B" button. "+" : Example: "Input controls: Down, Away + 'B' button" Description: First, press and release Down, then press Away and the "B" button at the same time. Hold : Example: "Input controls: Hold 'B' button 2 seconds, release 'B' button" Description: Press down and hold the "B" button for at least two seconds, then release it. -------------------------------- Regular Moves -------------------------------- Each character-- with the exception Shao Kahn-- has the same set of regular moves. Which moves Shao Kahn can perform are listed in his section (chapter "IV. CHARACTERS", section "11. SHAO KAHN"). Standing Moves ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Punch: "B" button Kick: "A" button Roundhouse: Towards + "A" button Throw: Towards + "B" button Notes: You must be adjacent to your opponent. This cannot be Blocked. This cannot be performed against Shao Kahn. Block: "Start" button Crouching Moves ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Uppercut: Down + "B" button Punch: Down + Towards + "B" button Kick: Down + "A" button Sweep: Away + "A" button Notes: This cannot be performed against Shao Kahn. Block: Down + "Start" button Aerial Moves ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Jump Punch: Up + "B" button Jump Kick: Up + "A" button Comparative Lists ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ The following are comparative lists of each regular and secret characters' regular moves' damage percentages on both regular and secret characters, and the boss, Shao Kahn. They are listed in ascending order. Note that the damage percentages do not apply to blocked moves. Move Regular/Secret Shao Kahn ¯¯¯¯ ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Punch ........................... 4.8% ........ 11.1% Crouching Kick 4.8% 11.1% Jump Punch ...................... 9.5% ......... 9.5% Sweep 11.1% N/A Diagonal Jump Kick ............. 15.9% ........ 15.9% Straight Jump Kick 19.0% 25.0% Kick ........................... 19.0% ........ 25.0% Roundhouse 19.0% 19.0% Throw .......................... 19.0%*.......... N/A Uppercut 23.8% 23.8% *Each characters' Throws inflict 19.0% damage, except Reptile's and Shang Tsung's. Reptile's inflicts 20.0% damage and Shang Tsung's inflicts 15.9% damage. Damage Percentages Math ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ All of the damage percentages are approximates. They were calculated by using a move until one more Punch would defeat the opponent. It takes 21 Punches to win by just using Punches; so 100/21 = 4.76. Then 4.76 was subtracted from 100, and the answer divided by how many times the move was used. If a decimal number was received, then the number was rounded to the closest tenth. In the cases where moves added up to 100% exactly, the above step was not used. --------------------------- Special/Finishing Moves --------------------------- Special Moves ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Each character has their own unique set of special moves. Below are a few important notes about special moves. • All moves can only be performed one at a time unless otherwise noted. • Some moves will not work against Jade and/or Shao Kahn. All moves like that are noted. Finishing Moves ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ If two rounds are won, and the second round is won without letting the Timer expire, "FINISH [HIM/HER]!" will be displayed, and the winner will get about five seconds to perform a finishing move. This short period of time is known as "finishing time"; that is the only time that finishing moves can only be performed. Each character-- with the exception of Smoke, Jade, and Shao Kahn-- has three finishing moves: a Babality, a Stage Fatality, and a Fatality. Smoke, Jade, and Shao Kahn do not have any finishing moves. If you injure your opponent, the finishing time will end. You will not have the option to perform finishing moves against Shao Kahn and the secret characters. Babality : Description: In a large burst of fire, the winner's opponent is transformed into an infant version of themselves. Notes: If you perform a Punch in the round which you are going to execute the Babality, the Babality will not occur. Stage : Description: The victor performs an Uppercuts which impales their Fatality opponent on the stage's ceiling's spikes. Notes: This can only be performed on the "Kombat Tomb" stage. Fatality : Description: The winner finishes off their opponent with a brutal or gruesome move. Notes: Some Fatalities require you to be a certain distance away from your opponent; Fatalities like that are noted. ----------------------------- General Strategies ------------------------------ These general strategies can be used with every character except Shao Kahn. See chapter "IV. CHARACTERS" for strategies and combos specific to each character. Tips/Notes ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ • The computer player will rarely wait, and will never back off. • Perform Crouches instead of Blocks to avoid projectiles and Punches. • You can perform punch combos up to four hits by rapidly pressing the "A" button. Versus Shao Kahn ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Offense : 1. If timed correctly, Roundhouses are the best regular move to use against him. Defense : 1. Avoid the sides of the stage. If you get cornered, he will relentlessly assault you with his Charge move. 2. Keep your distance from him; most of his attacks do not reach very far. 3. Crouch his Fireball move instead of Blocking it. _______________________________________________________________________________ ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ IV. CHARACTERS _______________________________________________________________________________ ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ In this chapter, I will use the descriptions, "Punch", "Kick", and "Block", instead of, "'B' button", "'A' button", and "'Start' button". This is to prevent confusion and to simplify things. To avoid redundancy, I have abbreviated the characters' names in descriptions to only the first letter of their name (i.e. "Mileena" would be "M."). To learn how the damage percentages were found, see paragraph "Damage Percentages Math", in sub-section "Regular Moves", in chapter "III. GAME BASICS", section "2. OF PLAYING". Note that the damage percentages do not apply to blocked moves. _______________________________________________________________________________ IV. 1. GLITCHES Combined Fatality ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ This is not really a glitch, but it is still fun. While playing as Shang Tsung, morph into Sub-Zero near the end of the second round. When your time as Sub-Zero is nearly up, defeat your opponent and perform Sub-Zero's first part of his Fatality. If timed correctly, you will have just enough time to morph back to Shang Tsung. Once he is morphed back, perform Shang Tsung's Fatality on your frozen opponent. Note that this is all about the timing. If you have even more time, you can try doing the above, but morphing into another person to finish off your frozen opponent. Jax's Fatality ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Jax has two Fatality glitches. 1. Hold Kick, Towards, Towards, Towards, Up, release Kick. He will walk up to his opponent and knock of their head multiple times. 2. Perform his Fatality halfway, but instead of pressing Kick at the end, press Punch. He will then perform his Gotcha Grab move. Once he grabs them, release Kick to finish his Fatality input controls. Then, both characters will perform their Fatalities simultaneously. What happens for each character is described below. • Liu Kang: You will smash his head just as he is transforming. • Sub-Zero: He will freeze you before you can do anything. • Kitana: You will get her right before she does. • Reptile: You will crush his head just as he removes his mask. • Mileena: She will perform her Fatality, then fall over dead. • Scorpion: You will crush his head just as he removes his mask. • Jax: Either you will get him or he will get you. • Shang Tsung: He will grab you first, freezing the game. • Smoke: The game will freeze. • Jade: The game will freeze. Scorpion's Fatality ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Jump over your opponent and immediately execute his Fatality after passing over them. Scorpion will stand up in midair with his mask off and fall to the ground. Then, he will perform his Fatality in the opposite direction of his opponent. Although his opponent never connects with the flame, they still catch on fire and explode. _______________________________________________________________________________ ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ VI. MISCELLANEOUS _______________________________________________________________________________ ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ _______________________________________________________________________________ VI. 1. 2-PLAYER MODE MORTAL KOMBAT II is a two-player game, meaning that if you the supplies, you can play against another human, other than the computer. Below are the supplies needed. • Two GameBoy systems • Two MORTAL KOMBAT II games (MORTAL KOMBAT 1&2 also works) • One Link Cable To enable this feature, simply insert the games into the GameBoys, then connect both GameBoys with the Link Cable. When both of them reach the MORTAL KOMBAT II Title screen or any of the following screens simultaneously, "PLAYER {#} HAS ENTERED THE TOURNAMENT!", "YOU ARE PLAYER {#}" will be displayed. Then both players will be brought to the Character Selection screen to choose their characters simultaneously. If both players choose the same character, then player 2's character will be a darkened version of themselves. Next, the Versus Screen will appear, displaying who is fighting who, how many battles have been consecutively fought, and which stage you are going to fight at. If the Link Cable becomes disconnected during any time, "LINK DISCONNECTED", "RESTARTING GAME" will be displayed, and the game will restart on both systems. If there is a tie, then both players will receive a "GAME OVER". _______________________________________________________________________________ VI. 2. INACCESSIBLE SPECIAL MOVES Because the secret characters' special moves' input controls were not programmed into the game, you cannot normally perform them. However, with a GameShark you can. Supplies ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ You will need at least one GameShark for this to work (I am not sure if it works with two); one Link cable; two GameBoy systems; and two MORTAL KOMBAT II game paks, one of them being just MORTAL KOMBAT II, not MORTAL KOMBAT 1&2). Instructions ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Plug the GameShark into one of the GameBoys and enter a code for player 2 (two) to be either Smoke or Jade (see chapter "V. SECRETS/CODES", section "3. GAMESHARK CODES" for the codes). Then, insert the games in the two GameBoys and connect them with the Link cable. Start a 2-player game, and make the GameBoy with the GameShark be player one. On player one's GameBoy (the one with the GameShark), player two will be controller the secret character activated by the GameShark; but, on player two's Gameboy, player two will be controller whichever normal character they selected. Now, whenever player two executes a special move for their character, their character on player one's GameBoy (the secret character) will perform their move. This is not as confusing as it sounds-- once you try it you will see how simple it is. Notes ¯¯¯¯¯ • If you attempt to perform any Finishing moves, the game will freeze. • Although it seems plausible, this section does not apply to Shao Kahn. _______________________________________________________________________________ VI. 3. TRIVIA & UNUSED CONTENT Kintaro ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Although Kintaro was in the GameGear port of MKII, he was cut from the GameBoy version. However, a text string for his name still exists in the ROM, and he even has a reserved character slot of "08", which crashes the game if you try to play as him with a GameShark. See more unused content here: http://tcrf.net/Mortal_Kombat_II_%28Game_Boy%29 MK1&II Combo Cart ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ The European version of the combo cart "MK1&II" appears to be only 1 player on the box, however, it is indeed 2-player just like the US and Japanese release. _______________________________________________________________________________ ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ VII.
