This one covers the GameBoy game Namco Classic. Obviously, this Japan-only game was developed by famed arcade game developer Namco but, as the title may mislead you to believe, this game is not about Pac-Man or Galaga or any of those types of games ... but the world-famous sport of golf. ... That's all I have to say on this game. Enjoy. =~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~= Section Two: Version History **GOLF_2** =~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~= Final - First and likely only version of this FAQ completed. 9:14 PM 2/16/2013 =~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~= Section Three: Legalities **GOLF_3** =~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~= This FAQ may not be reproduced under any circumstances except for personal, private use. There is one-player, and two-player. However, unlike most handheld golf games, the latter requires a GameBoy Link Cable. Anyways, after selecting one-player, you'll be allowed to choose one of two modes of play. - Stroke Play is based off of your overall strokes at the end of the course. It is effectively just a single eighteen-hole course you play based on that scoring agenda. - Tournament is a mode you'll play against other AI players in an attempt to have the best overall score. After doing this, you'll choose whether to have background music. Player Customization: ````````````````````` Next, you'll fill out the various info for your player. First is your name, up to six alphanumeric characters. Then you fill in your handicap, as applicable - the higher the number you fill in, the greater the handicap. Greater handicaps make it easier on you. It'll go from 00 to 36. Finally, you get to choose your various clubs - which to take and which to not take. You are only allowed thirteen clubs, plus the putter, which you'll always have. The game gives pretty much no way to know how far you hit the ball, so I'll just list them in order of power/distance here... - 1W (One Wood/Driver) - 2W (Two Wood) - 3W (Three Wood) - 4W (Four Wood) - 5W (Five Wood) - 1I (One Iron) - 2I (Two Iron) - 3I (Three Iron) - 4I (Four Iron) - 5I (Five Iron) - 6I (Six Iron) - 7I (Seven Iron) - 8I (Eight Iron) - 9I (Nine Iron) - PW (Putting/Pitching Wedge) - JG (?) - PS (?) - SW (Sand/Bunker Wedge) - PT (Putter; always brought) Personally, I would bring the 1W, 3W, 5W, the nine iron (#I) clubs, and PW. After you choose your clubs, the game will begin. ================ Playing the Game ================ As you arrive on the hole, you'll get a little bit of data on it - the par, hole number, and distance. The par is the baseline for scoring matters. When you get control, you'll find your score, shot number, and wind speed and direction at the top; your club is in the lower-right with the associated abbreviation. You can press Up and Down on the D-Pad initially to choose your desired club, or at pretty much any time except for when you're choosing the spin settings. The game will usually choose the best one appropriate for your distance, however. Begin by using the D-Pad to rotate the trajectory cursor (the "+") around; Right for clockwise, and Left for counterclockwise. Press the A Button to proceed. Next, you'll be able to choose where the club hits the ball - a new screen will appear, with a "+" on the golf ball. This will be where you hit the ball with your club. There are four main effects, and you can mix two of them by going diagonally in the proper directions. - Up : Induce topspin; increases speed and distance, but worsens stopping. - Down : Induce backspin; lowers speed and distance, but stops easier. - Left : Makes the ball angle to the right. - Right: Makes the ball angle to the left. Press the A Button to confirm. Note that you may not always get to choose such settings. Next, you'll find the power meter. This is 3/4 of a circle, with your club at the bottom. Press the A Button to begin the power meter's rotation - the further right it is, the more power you have. Press the A Button to confirm the power, then you'll need to press the A Button to hit the golf ball. The golf ball is at the bottom, in the white portion. Press the A Button on the line for a straight shot; late for one going right; and early for one going left. The power meter: 75% power _________/_ / _______/_ \ / / \ \ / / \ \ 50% power-/ / \_\ | | 100% power | | | | \ \ 25% power-\ \ \ \______ \___|_|_| 0% power Swing timing area The ball will then be shot. This will loop for a bit until you reach the green, where the hole is. You still have the same shooting mechanics as before. However, note that the arrows on the terrain will mark inclines that move the ball in the direction they are pointing. The hole will be the black dot. You'll usually loop through 18 holes in such a manner. =============== Scoring Details =============== Each given hole will have a set "par" on it. The par is the number of shots it ideally takes to finish a hole. If you go under this, you earn points (your score is negative, but that's good), and if you go over, you lose points (you gain positive points). Hitting exactly par neither hurts or helps you. The number of shots you take can also be affected by two other things - water hazards and out-of-bounds area. Both are considered out-of-bounds. This bad shot will count against you, and you'll be penalized an additional shot. For example, if you hit the water on your first shot, consider the next shot you take your third and not the second. At the end of the hole, the number of shots you take, minus the par, is your score. If such is positive, you went over (bogey); if negative, you did good by going under (birdie, eagle, albatross). And, of course, par is neither good or bad. In Stroke Play, your score is based off the number of strokes you took total across all 18 holes of golf. Therefore, it won't matter if you're beaten on ten holes if you took 70 strokes and your opponent took 72 - you still won. To the curious, the relatively official names for various shots: O----------------O-----------------O | Name of Shot | Score Changes | O----------------O-----------------O | Hole-in-One | (Par) - 1 | | Albatross | -3 | | Eagle | -2 | | Birdie | -1 | | Par | ±0 | | Bogey | +1 | | Double Bogey | +2 | | Triple Bogey | +3 | O----------------O-----------------O O=============================================================================O | This is the end of KeyBlade999's | | FAQ for the GameBoy game | | Namco Classic. | O=============================================================================O ________________ | ____________ | | | | | | | | | | |____________| |________________________________________ | |____________| |_________________________ | | | | | | |\ /\ /| | | | | | | | \ / \ / | | | |____________| | | | (_) (_) | | |________________| |_| |_| ___ ___ ___ /'__`\ /'__`\ /'__`\ /\ \_\ \ /\ \_\ \ /\ \_\ \ \ \___, \ \ \___, \ \ \___, \ \/__,/\ \ \/__,/\ \ \/__,/\ \ \ \_\ \ \_\ \ \_\ \/_/ \/_/ \/_/ KeyBlade999
