AUTHOR'S NOTE |_____ \ | _______________________________ | / \ |/ | | \| / / \ | | / \ /______/ \______\ Welcome to the Pokemon Yellow Gym Leader FAQ. An FAQ made for the strategies and abilities to use to defeat Gym Leaders. The Gym Leaders on Pokemon Yellow have different Pokemon and different types of attacks, So looking at the Red/Blue Boss FAQ will only give you an idea and not the complete strategy. I'm going to put in the best possible strategies for each of the Gym Leaders in the FAQ. This FAQ is only for the Gym Leaders and not the other trainers in the Gym. You can still fight them because they warm you up for the Gym Leader battle. The whole purpose of the FAQ is to make the Gym Leaders as easy as possible by exploring the types of Pokemon they use and drawing out their weaknesses in battle. Okay, lets go over to the Gym Leaders now. Thank you for choosing this FAQ to read. -Gold Mage (Thomas Hunt) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- _________________________________ / \ _____| 2. GYM LEADERS |_____ \ | _______________________________ | / \ |/ | | \| / / \ | | / \ /______/ \______\ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~ PEWTER CITY GYM LEADER: BROCK ~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ GEODUDE LV10 Skills: Tackle Type(s): Rock/Ground ONIX LV12 Skills: Bide, Bind, Screech and Tackle Type(s): Rock/Ground In Pokemon Yellow this Gym Battle is harder then in Red\Blue because you cannot get a Water or Grass type Pokemon. These two are the best types to use against Brock, but the problem is that you cannot catch these types of Pokemon this early in the game. But don't stress, there are still 2 Pokemon you can get that will be effective against Brock. You can catch a Mankey on Route 22 and you can catch a Caterpie or Metapod and raise it to evolve into a Butterfree. Butterfree will learn Confusion at LV10 and Mankey will learn Low Kick at LV9 so train up these 2 so they both have these skills. Now you're ready for Brock. Brock's Geodude is fairly weak, so just defeat it as quickly as possible and save your strength for his Onix. Onix's Bide and screech are the attacks to look out for. When Onix uses Bide it won't attack for 3 turns, but the damage that you do to it in these turns Onix will attack you with double damage. Screech will lower your defense greatly. After the battle, Brock will give you TM34 (Bide) and the Boulderbadge. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~ CERULEAN CITY GYM LEADER: MISTY ~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ STARYU Skills: Water Gun and Tackle Type(s): Water STARMIE Skills: Water Gun, Bubble Beam, Harden and Tackle Type(s): Water/Psychic The feisty red-head is the Gym Leader of Cerulean City, and she can be hard to beat if your not ready for this match. Pikachu is a good choice to use in this battle but for even better results a Grass Type Pokemon will work better here. Grass Type Pokemon are better against Water type. You can catch a Bellsprout and/or a Oddish on Route 24. If you train them a bit (recommended) they can learn various Status Effect Attacks like Poison Power and Stun Spore. These will do good in the battle. If you are using a Grass Type Pokemon, Staryu will be a breeze. Water Gun will do very little damage to you. Starmie will be tougher though. Don't worry about Starmie using Harden because that will not do very well to defend itself. Keep using Absorb and this battle will be over not too soon. When you win, Misty will give her TM11 (Bubblebeam) and Cascadebadge. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~ VERMILION CITY GYM LEADER: LT. SURGE ~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ RAICHU LV28 Skills: Growl, Mega Punch, Mega Kick and Thunderbolt Type(s): Electric This battle can be very easy if you use the right Pokemon. If you haven't gone to see Diglett's Cave, you should go their now and catch either a Diglett or a Dugtrio. Better yet, catch 2 because one alone may not be able to fend off against Raichu. Using a Ground Type like Diglett will work well against Lt. Surge, but it isn't the best type ever. Using a Rock type Pokemon however, you will have a lot better chance against Surge. Ground Type Pokemon will not be affected by Raichu's Thunderbolt, but it is still vulnerable against Mega Punch and Mega Kick. If you caught a Geodude at Mt. Moon and have raised it a little, You will have a very good chance in this battle due to that Rock Type Pokemon have a high defense. So Mega Punch and Mega Kick will not do a lot of damage to you. Using Dig is your best option in this battle. When you defeat Surge he will give you TM24 (Thunderbolt) and the Thunderbadge. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~ CELADON CITY GYM LEADER: ERIKA ~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ TANGELA LV30 Skills: Mega Drain, Vine Whip, Constrict and Bind. Type(s): Grass WEEPINBELL LV32 Skills: Acid, Sleep Powder, Stun Spore and Razor Leaf Type(s): Grass/Poison GLOOM LV32 Skills: Acid, Sleep Powder, Stun Spore and Petal Dance Type(s): Grass/Poison It seems Erika uses more weakening than attacking as much. She will use attacks that will do status effects to your Pokemon like Poison and Paralyze. The best chance at this battle will be Pokemon who will not be affected by these types of status or with a good defense if they are affected. If you have any good level Fire Pokemon they will do good here. Also any Grass Type Pokemon with a strong physical attack like Body Slam or Cut, they will also work very well in this kind of battling. He Weepinbell and Gloom are her best Pokemon; you will need to be on your toes when you are fighting them. Also have a few Antidotes and Paralyze Heals before you start to battle. Erika also uses Super Potions when her Pokemon have been weak for a little while, so finish them off quickly. When you win the battle Erika will award you a TM21, which teaches Mega Drain, and you will get the Rainbowbadge. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~ SAFFRON CITY GYM LEADER: SABRINA ~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ABRA LV50 Skills: Flash Type(s): Psychic KADABRA LV50 Skills: Kinesis, Psychic, Psywave and Recover Type(s): Psychic ALAKAZAM LV50 Skills: Reflect, Psychic, Psywave and Recover Type(s): Psychic Sabrina is a tough gym Leader to defeat. You will need to have trained hard and taught your Pokemon some good skills so you can face her. The only type of attack that Psychic Pokemon are weak against are Bug type attacks. Now the problem with this is that most Bug Pokemon are also part Poison type and Poison Pokemon are really weak against Psychic attacks. So the best option here is to have a Pokemon that has a high Attack and Defense. Don't worry about speed, her Pokemon are probably too fast for you anyway. Take out her Abra as fast as you can. Don't use your best Pokemon against it. Because the more Flashes it does, the worse your accuracy becomes. So use a strong Pokemon, but not your best. Remember that her Kadabra and Alakazam both have Recover. So also defeat them before they get the chance to use it. When you defeat Sabrina you will get TM46, which teaches Psywave and the Marshbadge. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~ FUCHSIA CITY GYM LEADER: KOGA ~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ VENONAT LV44 Skills: Sleep Powder, Tackle, Toxic and Psychic Type(s): Bug/Poison VENONAT LV46 Skills: Psybeam, Supersonic, Toxic and Psychic Type(s): Bug/Poison VENONAT LV48 Skills: Psychic, Double Edge, Sleep Powder and Toxic Type(s): Bug/Poison VENOMOTH LV50 Skills: Leech Life, Psychic, Toxic and Double Team Type(s): Bug/Poison Yet again, another gym Leader who likes to set out the playing field before attacking much. Koga will use all sorts of methods to poison you then power up his Pokemon. Though this seems bad, Koga isn't that tough to beat. Using a strong Pokemon with strong psychical attacks and a high defense should do okay in this battle. Using Antidotes and Full Heals is a good way to stop the Poison. One of Koga's most lethal attacks would have to be Toxic. Be careful if he uses this on you. The poison is lethal. Cure it straight away. When you win against the Pokemon of Koga he will give you TM06, which allows you to teach Toxic, and he gives you the Soulbadge as proof of his defeat. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~ CINNABAR GYM LEADER: BLANE ~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ NINETAILS LV48 Skills: Flamethrower, Quick Attack, Confuse Ray and Tail Whip Type(s): Fire RAPIDASH LV50 Skills: Growl, Fire Spin, Stomp and Take Down Type(s): Fire ARCANINE LV54 Skills: Fire Blast, Flamethrower, Reflect and Take Down Type(s): Fire Balne's Pokemon are all Fire types, none of them have a second type so this means your best chance at this battle are some strong Rock or Ground type Pokemon and some good Water Pokemon. There isn't much to say about Blane, he is pretty straightforward and not that tough to bet. Just watch out for his Arcanine's Fire Blast. Just use Water attacks and this battle will be over quickly. When you do beat Blane he gives you TM38 which teaches Fire Blast and he gives you the Volcanobadge. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~ VIRIDIAN CITY GYM LEADER: GIOVANNI ~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ DUGTRIO LV50 Skills: Dig, Fissure, Earthquake and Sand Attack Type(s): Ground PERSIAN LV53 Skills: Double Team, Fury Swipes, Slash and Screech Type(s): Normal NIDOQUEEN LV53 Skills: Earthquake, Double Kick, Tail Whip and Thunder Type(s): Poison/Ground NIDOKING LV55 Skills: Leer, Thunder, Double Kick and Earthquake Type(s): Poison/Ground RHYDON LV55 Skills: Fury Attack, Horn Drill, Rock Slide and Earthquake Type(s): Rock/Ground This is the final Gym Leader, and by he can have some tough Pokemon. You will need to have some strong Water, Grass and Ice type Pokemon here. A good flying Pokemon will be good against Dugtrio, and that's about it. The only fast Pokemon he has are Dugtrio and Persian, so when it comes to the tougher Pokemon, be ready to attack first and get them out of the way. Fissure and Horn Drill are One-Hit-KO attacks! Watch out for these. But the good thing is that they only have a 30% chance of hitting you. When the final battle of the Gym Leaders is over, Giovanni will give you the TM27 which teaches Fissure and then the Earthbadge. Woo, you beat them all. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- _________________________________ / \ _____| 3.
