What's New -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Version 1.1 (2/15/11): I recently replayed this game and reworked parts of the walkthrough. I added an Overview section which contains a map of the island and important locations, and revamped the Heart Piece/Secret Seashell sections to be easier to understand. Version 1.0 (7/2/01): A few sections were reformatted/cleaned up a bit. This guide has been and is totally complete at this point, too. Version 0.75 (9/22/99): With this version, most of the guide is complete. ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 2. Introduction -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Zelda: Link's Awakening DX is the re-released version of the original Zelda for Gameboy. This DX version was released for the Gameboy Color, and has some more secrets than in the old version. There is a new hidden dungeon, treasure chests have different contents, and everything's in color! If you didn't get a chance to play the first Zelda: Link's Awakening when it first came out in 1993, then go and play this new DX version as soon as you can! ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 3. Story -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Though you fulfilled the Hyrulian prophecy of the Legendary Hero and destroyed the evil tyrant Ganon, the land of Hyrule enjoyed only a precarious peace. "Who knows what threats may arise from Ganon's ashes?" the restless people murmured as they knitted their brows and shook their heads. Ever vigilant, you decided to journey away from Hyrule on a quest for enlightenment, in search of wisdom that would make you better able to withstand the next threat to your homeland. Months of difficult travel passed. After a long and fruitful voyage, you breathed deeply the sea spray from the deck of the ship that carried you home to Hyrule. But your homecoming was not to be. Suddenly a squall struck your ship, and though you valiantly fought the waves, a lightning bolt reduced your ship to splinters. Your world faded to black as you sink into the darkness of the storm-tossed sea with the remains of your craft. But in the cold darkness of the deep, you heard a comforting voice that reminded you of home. It was the voice of Princess Zelda! "You're going to be all right!" the voice said. "What a relief!" You opened your eyes to find Princess Zelda standing over you - or was it?! Actually, it turned out to be a woman named Marin. She explained that you had drifted with the wreckage of your ship to the shores of Koholint Island. This mysterious island was unique for the gigantic egg, which crowned its central mountain. It was said that a mythical creature, the Wind Fish, lay asleep inside the egg. You set out in search of your sword and other gear that might have washed up on the beach with you. As you stood in the surf with your recovered sword, a strange owl suddenly appeared and hooted this riddle: "Awaken the Wind Fish and all will be answered." "What is the Wind Fish?" you wonder... And what did its awakening portend? Your most mysterious adventure yet, following the riddle of the Wind Fish throughout the uncharted island of Koholint, is about to unfold. ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 4. Controls -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Control Pad: Move cursor, move around in the game Start: Pause game, bring up submenu Select: View the overworld map, bring up an extra screen in submenu A: Use whatever you have equipped to this button, talk, use the telephone, read something B: Use whatever you have equipped to this button, cancel message when reading or talking ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 5. Overview -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= The game takes place on Koholint Island, as you will find out. The island is on a 16x16 map (256 different overworld screens). If you press Select during the game, you can view the sections of the map you have already visited; all unvisited areas can not be viewed. You get nothing for visiting every screen of the overworld, so don't worry. On the in-game map, you can press A over a space to view the area's name and any important information about that location (if an icon appears in the lower-right corner). The grid below will show where every locale is, as well as the coordinates of many important locations for easy viewing. =============== Koholint Island =============== ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ 1|TTR|TTR|TTR|TTR|TTR|TTR|WFE|TTR|TTR|TTR|TTR|TTR|TTR|TTR|#7 |TTR| |___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___| 2|#8 |TTR|TTR|TTR|TTR|TTR|TTR|TTR|TTR|TTR|TTR|TTR|TTR|TTR|TTR|TTR| |___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___| 3|GS |GS |GS |GS |#2 |TTH|TTH|TTH|TTH|TTH|TTH|#4 |TTH|TTH|TTH|TTH| |___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___| 4|GS |GS |GS |GS |GS |TTH|TTH|TTH|TTH|TTH|TTH|TTH|TTH|TTH|TTH|TTH| |___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___| 5|MW |MW |MW |MW |KP |KP |TW |TW |KC |KC |KC |KC |RR |RR |RR |RR | |___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___| 6|MW |MW |MW |MW |KP |KP |TW |TW |KC |KC |KC |KC |RR |RR |RR |RR | |___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___| 7|MW |MW |MW |MW |KP |KP |CM |CM |KC |KC |KC |KC |RR |RR |RR |RR | |___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___| 8|MW |MW |MW |MW |KP |KP |CM |CM |KC |KC |KC |KC |RR |RR |RR |RR | |___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___| 9|MW |MW |MV |MV |UP |UP |UP |UP |UP |UP |UP |UP |#6 |FS |RR |RR | |___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___| 10|MW |MW |MV |MV |UP |UP |UP |UP |UP |UP |UP |UP |FS |FS |RR |RR | |___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___| 11|MV |MV |MV |MV |UP |UP |UP |UP |UP |UP |UP |UP |FS |FS |FS |FS | |___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___| 12|MV |MV |MV |MV |UP |#3 |UP |UP |UP |UP |UP |UP |FS |FS |FS |FS | |___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___| 13|SV |SV |SV |SV |SM |SM |PF |PF |MB |MB |MB |MB |AV |AV |YD |YD | |___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___| 14|SV |SV |SV |#1 |SM |SM |PF |PF |MB |#5 |MB |MB |AV |AV |YD |YD | |___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___| 15|TS |TS |TS |TS |TS |TS |MB |MB |MB |MB |MB |MB |EB |EB |YD |YD | |___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___| 16|TS |TS |TS |TS |TS |TS |MB |MB |MB |MB |MB |MB |EB |EB |YD |YD | |___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___| A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P =========== Area Legend =========== AV: Animal Village PF: Pothole Field CM: Cemetary RR: Rapids Ride EB: East of the Bay SM: Signpost Maze FS: Face Shrine SV: South of the Village GS: Goponga Swamp TW: Tabahl Wasteland KC: Kanalet Castle TTH: Tal Tal Heights KP: Koholint Prairie TTR: Tal Tal Mountain Range MB: Martha's Bay UP: Ukuku Prairie MV: Mabe Village WFE: Wind Fish's Egg MW: Mysterious Woods YD: Yarna Desert =================== Important Locations =================== Game Start (Marin & Tarin's House): C11 Camera Shop: H4 Crazy Tracy's Health Spa (Secret Medicine): F5 Dream Shrine: D9 Fishing Pond: B9 Ghost's Grave: E7 Ghost's House: G16 Hen House: K1 L-1 Sword: C16 Mabe Village Shop: D10 Mad Batter (use Magic Powder, get upgrade): C6 (lift stone) E1 (lift stone) G15 (use steps at J16 to access) Mermaid: J13 Mermaid Statue: J15 Rapids Ride Start: P4 Sale's Bananas: D15 Seashell Mansion: K9 Southern Shrine: M11 Telephone Booths: B2, B4, C12, E11, I9, I15, L5, L14 Trendy Game: D11 Warps: B1, F10, M3, M15 Witch's Hut: F7 Pieces of Heart: A1 A11 (need Sword) B9 (catch all fish) C7 (enter cave; need Power Bracelet) E5 (need Roc's Feather) G8 (push lower-right tombstone) G9 H1 (need Hookshot) I8 (need Flippers) N13 (need Bombs) O3 (need Flippers) P13 Secret Seashells: B8 (need Power Bracelet) B11 (inside doghouse, need Shovel) C14 (need Pegasus Boots) D11 (need Sword) D14 (inside Tail Cave, need Bombs) E8 (need Shovel, Sword) E11 (need Pegasus Boots) F11 (need Shovel) G11 (need Flippers, Sword) G14 (inside house, need Power Bracelet) G16 (inside house, need Power Bracelet) I8 (need Flying Rooster) I11 (need Shovel) I16 (need Flippers, Sword) J12 (need Power Bracelet) J15 (need Sword) K9 (inside mansion, must have exactly 5 or 10 shells) K14 (need Shovel) L9 (need Sword) M1 (need Power Bracelet) M7 (secondary exit from Face Shrine) N2 O1 (inside Eagle's Tower) O11 P16 (need Power Bracelet) ======== Dungeons ======== D4 - #1: Tail Cave E3 - #2: Bottle Grotto F12 - #3: Key Cavern L3 - #4: Angler's Tunnel J14 - #5: Catfish's Maw M9 - #6: Face Shrine O1 - #7: Eagle's Tower A2 - #8: Turtle Rock G1 - Wind Fish's Egg ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 6. Walkthrough -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ========= Overworld ========= You start the game in a house in Mabe Village, still unconscious in bed. You wake up and the girl who rescued you, Marin, is talking to you but you think that she's Princess Zelda! After she tells you that you're on Koholint Island, jump out of bed and talk to Tarin, Marin's father. He will give you your L-1 Shield and it'll be automatically equipped on you. After that, leave the house and go west two screens, past Madam MeowMeow's House to the screen with the well. From there, head south for three more screens to reach the Toronbo Shores area. There, go south until you reach a screen with trees and Octoroks wandering around. Head east one screen to find some Urchins blocking access to the bottom half of the screen. Hold up your Shield and walk into the Urchins to push them back safely, then head east to the next screen. Push another pair of Urchins aside and continue south one screen to the water. You will spot your Sword there, but as you approach, a mysterious owl will appear. It will tell you to go to the Mysterious Woods, among other things. Once it leaves, go forward and collect the L-1 Sword! Now that you are equipped with a weapon, you can attack enemies and cut down bushes/grass to earn some rupees! Make your way back to Mabe Village by the well you passed on the way. You can cut down the bush there on the ledge and fall into the well, where you will find your first Piece of Heart! You can find a Secret Seashell in the large field of bushes one screen east of Marin and Tarin's House. If you have enough money, you can start the game's trading sequence by getting the Yoshi Doll at the Trendy Game, and complete the next couple of trades in town. When you are ready, go north of the well and cut down the bush by the sign to enter the forest. You will meet the owl again there. Once it leaves, continue north two screens while fighting the Moblins along the way. At the corner, go east two screens to find a cave. In the first room, open the chest to get 50 rupees, then get through the rest of the cave while defeating the Keese and Gels along the way. In the room with the rocks, push two of them aside to reach the exit. Back outside, grab the Sleepy Toadstool behind the bushes to the left. With it, re-enter the cave and push your way through the rocks, then continue out to the other end. When you emerge again, go north two screens to find a cave blocked off by rocks for now. Head east two more screens to reach a Piece of Heart surrounded by pits (return here later when you can jump over them). Then, continue south and east to reach the Witch's Hut. Give the witch inside the toadstool and she will make you some Magic Powder. Now, leave the hut and go west one screen, north two, west two, and south two. You will be back at the cave entrance you went through previously. This time, go west one screen and north another one to find a raccoon. Go up to it and use some Magic Powder on it, and it will transform back into Tarin! After he is done talking, go into the northern area and you will find a chest. Open it to get the Tail Key. The owl will appear yet again, pointing you to the Tail Cave by the shore. When it flies away, head back south three screens, west one, and south two to return to the well in Mabe Village. From here, go south two screens until you reach the first area with the cliffs. Read the sign if you want, then go east three screens. Follow the path around for the next few screens and you will come to the Tail Cave at the dead end. Walk into the keyhole to use the key, which will unlock the cave entrance. Then, go inside. ================== Level 1: Tail Cave ================== Starting off, go into the room to the west. Knock the Hardhat Beetles into the pit with your Sword, then collect the Small Key that falls from above. In the west room ahead, defeat the Gels that appear to unlock the door. Open the chest to get the Compass, then go back east two rooms to the entrance. This time, go into the north room and knock the Hardhat Beetle into the pit, then defeat the smaller Gels. Go around and step on the floor switch to make a chest appear. Open the chest to get a Small Key, then go into the east room. In this room, defeat the Stalfos and Keese to make a chest appear; open it to get the Map. Then, go up through the one-way door. In the next room, simply go west into the following room. Defeat the Mini Moldorm while trying to avoid the Sparks, then open the chest to get a Small Key. Now, go west into the next room and defeat the Mini Moldorm to make another chest appear. Open it to get 20 rupees. If you have Bombs, you can bomb the cracked wall and grab a Secret Seashell inside (you can come back later for it). Now, go north and into the next room. Here, defeat the Keese, then activate the Blade Trap and stand back. As it retracts, run past and unlock the door to enter the next room. Here, go east, north and west around the room to get to the upper half. When you reach the locked door, push the leftmost block aside to open it. Enter the next room where you'll encounter two Spiked Beetles. Flip them over with your Shield and defeat them with your Sword to make a staircase appear. Go down the steps into the basement area, then get through the passage while defeating the Goombas. At the west end, climb the ladder to reach a new room above. Here, go north through the hallway until you reach the room with the Blade Traps. Activate them, then run past when they return to where they were, and open the chest to get Roc's Feather. With it, you can now jump over small pits and even enemies! Now, get past the Blade Traps and leave the room. Use Roc's Feather to take the winged heart while going down the hall so you can get all your hearts refilled. Continue southward to the steps, then go down and through the basement area. When you emerge in the Spiked Beetle room, go east into the next room. Here, simply jump over the pit and go into the southern room. Go south one room and east one more You will see a block at the east end of the room; take the eastern path above the block to reach the next room. Then, go east and north into another room. Jump across the pit and walk into the block with a keyhole on it to open it, then continue into the west room. Open the chest there to get the Nightmare's Key. Now, backtrack a few rooms back to the room with the Mini Moldorm and the Sparks, then take the lower path to the east room. Unlock the eastern door and continue into that room. In here, you can jump over the pit and continue into the east room (if you go north, you can defeat the Three-of-a- Kind enemies and open a chest to get the Stone Beak). In the east room, you will get to fight the Rolling Bones mini-boss. Simply jump over the spiked log and attack with your Sword to defeat it. After that, take the Fairy and go north into the next room (a warp will appear as well, which you can use to return here from the entrance at any time; this will happen after most mini-boss fights throughout the game, so keep that in mind). Avoid the Blade Traps here and make your way to the other side of the room, then use the Nightmare Key to unlock the door, then enter that room to meet Moldorm, the Tail Cave boss. Read the Bosses section of this guide for help on beating it. After you beat it, take the Heart Container, then go into the final room and claim the Full Moon Cello! ========= Overworld ========= After you get warped back outside, go west to the next screen and the owl will be there waiting. It'll tell you that you need to collect all the instruments and that you should head to Goponga Swamp. After it leaves, go north one screen and hop over the pit, then continue west two screens. At the signpost, go north to the library and the two kids will stop you. They will mention that BowWow was kidnapped by some Moblins! So, continue north two screens and cut down the bush to enter the Mysterious Woods again. Here, go north two screens, east one, and north two. You should be at the chset where you found the Tail Key earlier. Jump over the pits to the right and continue east three screens. Jump over the pits and grab the Piece of Heart, then jump to the north and enter that area. Continue east another screen from there to find a cave. Inside, go through the first two rooms and defeat the Moblins. In the third room, you will face the King Moblin. Beat it by dodging its arrows until it charges at you. Move out of the way so it crashes into the wall, then while it's dazed, hit it with your Sword. Repeat that process until it's defeated, then go to the last room to free BowWow; just walk up to the rock it's chained on to free it. Now, get out of the cave and head east one screen to see the owl if you want. Otherwise, go west and south to the area with the pits. Jump across them and go west three screens. Cut the bushes down around the empty chest and continue west, then north a screen. Head east two screens until you reach the southwest corner of the Goponga Swamp. As you probably noticed already, BowWow can eat enemies whole, saving you the trouble of fighting them! BowWow can also eat the Goponga Flowers in the swamp which you can not kill on your own (at least not yet). So, head north one and east two screens, having BowWow kill the enemies along the way if you desire. When you reach the cave entrance surrounded by Goponga Flowers, wait for BowWow to eat one, then enter the second dungeon. ====================== Level 2: Bottle Grotto ====================== When you enter this dungeon, just go straight ahead and into the next room. Here, the room is darkened and the doors are locked. To light the lanterns and open the doors, go up the steps and sprinkle Magic Powder in both of the lanterns. They'll light up and open the door, so head into the east room. In this room, defeat the two Stalfos and take the Key that appears after you beat them. Use it to open the southern door, then enter that room. Defeat the Mask-Mimic (hold your Sword button charged, then move around so you end up behind the enemy, and perform the spinning attack to kill it). Open the chest that appears to get the Compass, then exit the room. Then, continue east. In the new area, hit the crystal switch and go into the southern room. Beat the Sword Stalfos if you want, then hit the crystal switch and open the chest to get a Key. Now, simply continue into the east room. Here, jump across the platforms where the blocks are lowered with Roc's Feather and step on the floor switch to make a chest appear. Open it to get a Key. Then, hop your way to the northern ledge and enter that room. Defeat the Mask-Mimics with your spinning sword attack to make another Key appear behind the blocks. Now, go back south one room and west one room. Hit the crystal switch near the chest to raise the blocks surrounding it, and continue northward. Cross the line of lowered blocks and turn into the east area. Grab the Key and head back west, and into the southern room again. Hit the crystal switch, then go east, north, and east into a room with two Spiked Beetles. Defeat them if you want, otherwise unlock the door and enter the north room. In this room, push the two blocks together to make steps appear; go down them to reach the basement. Get across the moving platforms with help from Roc's Feather, then climb into the new room at the west end. In the darkened room, walk around the perimeter to the left, or simply jump across to the middle platform and grab the winged heart overhead. Then, go through the one-way door to find the Hinox mini-boss. Defeat it easily with your Sword, but avoid the bombs it throws. After you beat it, take the Fairy and note the warp that appears, and enter the east room. Hop across the pits and grab another winged heart in the southeast corner. Defeat the Keese and enter the north room. Here, be cautious of the Vacuum Mouth in the corner which will affect your movement. Open the chest to get a Map if you want it, then continue going north. In the next room, open the chest to get 20 rupees. Grab the winged Magic Powder and unlock the west door. There, light a lantern with some Magic Powder, and beat the Boo Buddies to make another chest appear. Open it to get the Power Bracelet, which is another really useful item! Now, leave the room and lift up the pots behind the chest, then continue to the next room. Go east and hit the crystal switch, then stand on the lowered block in the middle and hit it again to lower the other ones. Then, stand on the lowered blocks to the right and hit the switch again to raise them while you're standing on them. Open the chest nearby to get a Key. After that, continue east for two rooms. When you reach the Keese and Stalfos, defeat them if you want, otherwise go into the room to the south for now. To get the Nightmare's Key, you must defeat the three enemies here in the exact order I tell you here, otherwise you won't get it. First, push the blocks around so you can hit the Pols Voice surrounded by blocks. Defeat the Pols Voice by throwing a pot at it. Then, defeat the Keese in the lower-right corner of the room. Finally, beat the Shrouded Stalfos and a chest should appear. Open it to get the Nightmare's Key. With that done, go north to exit the room. Unlock the eastern door and continue into that room now. Defeat the Gel and Pols Voices to make some stairs appear, then go down them to reach the basement. In the first scene, just ride down the stone elevator and continue onward. In the second area, pick up a pot and carry it onto the second elevator to weigh it down. Then, go west and up the stairs to reach the next room. In this room, follow the path to the southern end, then jump across the middle ledges with Roc's Feather. Unlock the boss door and enter the final room. You will meet the Genie inside; read the Bosses section if you need help. Once it's over, take the Heart Container and go to the next room, and take the Conch Horn! ========= Overworld ========= After you are brought back outside of the Bottle Grotto, have BowWow eat a passageway through the flowers, then go south to the next screen. Use the Power Bracelet to lift up the two stones, then continue south to the next screen. Jump over the pits and continue south two screens, and east one to the Witch's Hut. Jump over the pit there and continue southward for two screens. Lift the stone at the end of the path, then go south one screen to find your first warp portal; jump into it and you will not get anywhere for now. However it is useful to know this location. Anyway, go west and lift the stones to reach Mabe Village again. Visit Madam MeowMeow's House (it's to the west of Marin's) and talk to her to return BowWow. Once you get your big reward (heh), exit the house. You should have enough rupees on you to buy the Shovel by now, so it's time to head to the Shop. Go in and buy the Shovel (it would help if you did the Money Saving Trick here). You should buy some Bombs as well. When you are done, leave the shop. Before you proceed onward, you will want to look at the Trading Sequence section of the guide and make sure you have completed it up until the point you get the Bananas. Once you have the Bananas, you will be set to go. Head east from the shop to reach the next area. Cut down the bushes and lift up the rocks and go east to enter the Ukuku Prairie region. There is a lot of exploring for you to do in this area, and plenty of items to be found in due time. If you want to go exploring now, peruse the Secret Seashells section and have fun adventuring. First, go east a screen to find the warp portal again. From here, go south three, east one, and south one screen. You will pass the Key Cavern and the keyhole; you will be back here soon. When you arrive to the south of there, you will find a house. This is Richard's villa. Go inside and talk to Richard, and he will ask you to collect the five Golden Leaves inside of Kanalet Castle in exchange for his help. Agree to help, then leave the villa. Your next goal is to reach a monkey standing outside of Kanalet Castle to the east and north (L8 on the grid). To get there directly from the villa, go: east one, north three, east one, north two, east one, north one, and east two. When you get there, talk to Kiki the monkey and give him the Bananas. He will summon his friends and they will build you a bridge, leaving a Stick behind. Take it and go across the bridge to reach a new area. Continue north for three screens, then when you reach the Telephone Booth, go west one screen. Cut down the bush and go downstairs to enter a hidden passage. Use Roc's Feather to cross the spikes in the second half, then emerge within the castle walls at the other side. Once you're inside the castle's walls, your job is to find the five Golden Leaves for Richard. First, head right and defeat the Soldier there. Then, go south to the next area and you'll see six holes in the ground. The Mad Bomber randomly pops out of them (usually the one farthest away from you). Hit the bomber four times with your Sword to make him give up the first Golden Leaf. Next, go south and beat a couple more Soldiers, then head west for a couple of screens. Defeat another Soldier, then go west one screen and beat yet another Soldier. Then, lift up a rock and throw it at the tree the Crow is sitting in. That'll make it fly out after you; hit it with your sword a couple times to beat it and get the second Leaf. Now, go back south and east to the castle entrance again. This time, go inside and continue to the second room. Here, defeat the Gel and two sword- less Soldiers to make the next Golden Leaf appear. Take it, then go north and into the next room. Avoid the Soldiers here and go east to the following room. Defeat the Keese and sword-less Soldier, then stand on the switch there to lower the gate in front of the castle for easy access outside, then go up the nearby steps and head west. Go up the stairs at the end to the next floor. There, go down the steps in front of you and put a bomb in front of the left wall statue. It'll explode and a Soldier will come out so watch out! Beat the Soldier to get the fourth Leaf. Now, go up the steps and continue east, and follow the path until you end up outside of the castle. Reenter the castle via the nearby door to the right. In there, pick up a pot and throw it at the door to open it, then enter the room. You will have to fight the Knight mini- boss inside. After you beat it, take the final Golden Leaf and exit the room. Go back outside, then make your way back downstairs through the castle until you are at the main entrance outside again. From the castle entrance, go south two screens, west one, south two, west one, south three, and west one screen. You should be passing a maze of bushes to the left as you proceed along the narrow path. At the end, you will find Richard's villa again. Go inside and talk to Richard, who will now move aside since you found the Golden Leaves. Push the dresser he was standing next to aside and you will reveal some hidden stairs. Go down them to enter a hidden room below. Follow the path through this small cave, defeating the Gels along the way. At the first path split, go left and jump over a gap to reach a Secret Seashell in a chest. When you emerge at the other end of the cave, you will be within that maze, known as the Pothole Maze. Please refer to a map I created, found at GameFAQs, for help getting through this area: db.gamefaqs.com/portable/gbcolor/file/zelda_links_awakening_dx_pothole.gif After you get to the other side by the owl statue, cut down the bush in front of it and use the Shovel to dig where the bush was. Take the Slime Key that you dig up, then get back around through the bush maze and through the cave into Richard's villa. After you leave the villa, follow the path going north and west until you reach the Key Cavern gate. You should see a keyhole there; go up to it and use the Slime Key to open the gate. To get inside this dungeon, go back south to Richard's villa, then head east and north again. When you're able to go west towards the water, approach the water's edge and go south. Then, jump across the platforms in the water and head west to reach the Key Cavern entrance. Go inside to start the dungeon. =================== Level 3: Key Cavern =================== When you enter this dungeon, lift up a pot and throw it at the locked door to open it, then go into the north room. In there, defeat the enemies to make a chest appear. Open it to get a Key. Then, take the path north of the chest (the right path) to the next room. Walk up through this room and beat the Gels that appear. Open the chest if you want to fight another Gel, otherwise don't touch the chest and continue north and into the next room. In this room, either defeat or ignore the two Stalfos since beating them will do nothing because you can't reach the small Gel until later in this level. Anyway, go north into the next room and head down the stairs to the floor below. Defeat the Gels here if you want, then use the Key to open the south door and enter that room. There, defeat the Pairodd, the Shrouded Stalfos, and a couple of Gels to make a Key appear. Take the Key as it moves along the moving floor. Then, go back up to the previous room and open the west door. Here, beat the Pairodds and a couple more Gels to make another Key appear. Take it and the winged hearts if you need the health, then go back to the middle room. Now, unlock the north door and enter that room. Beat the enemies there to make another Key appear. Take it, then go back to the previous room. Finally, unlock the eastern door and enter that room. Go around the room and defeat the enemies if you want, then go up the stairs at the end. In the next room, go around this room and beat all five Gels that come out of the ground to make a Key appear. Take it and go north to the next room. Here, simply go west to the following room and defeat all the Gels there to open the doors. First, go into the west room and defeat the enemies inside to make a Key appear. Take it and go through the one-way door leading to the north room. Defeat the Stalfos and Gels in there to make a chest appear on the high ledge, which we will come back to. Continue through the next one-way door to the next room. In there, beat the Sword Stalfos and Bombites, and lift the pots to reach some winged Bombs. After that, go up the steps and head south to the next room. Open the chest to get 50 rupees, and continue southward. In the next room, push the block ahead to get down the stairs, then enter the north door. You will fight the two Dodongo Snakes in here. To beat them quickly, defeat one of them (feed Bombs to them), then go up the steps at the bottom of the screen and go to the next room. Then, go back up and the one you didn't kill will be dead! After you beat them and the warp appears, go into the east room and follow the path around. Then, push the bottom block to the left and the other block upward to make a path. Open the chest there to get the Pegasus Boots! Now, take the nearby winged hearts if you want, then use the Pegasus Boots and the Sword to ram through the crystal blocks. Then, push the block at the end and go south to the next room. In this room, bomb the east wall between the two candles, then go right through the hole to the next room. In this room, use the Pegasus Boots and Roc's Feather to jump across the pit, then go up the steps and to the next room. Here, go up and jump across the smaller pit, then open the chest to get the Nightmare's Key. Next, jump off the ledge and go north to the next room. Here, beat the Bombites that count down before exploding, as well as the Gels. Go through the next door when it opens to reach the new room. Beat the Shrouded Stalfos and the Gels, and open the chest to get the Compass. Then, bomb the lower half of the left wall to make a hole in it, then go through that hole to the next room. Here, beat the Bombites to make a Key appear. Take it, then backtrack a few rooms back to the room where you got the Nightmare's Key on the higher ledge. From here, go west into the next room, then continue south to the following room. Head west one room, then go north to where you fought the Dodongo Snakes before. Step into the warp to return to the dungeon entrance. When you arrive, go into the east room now. Use the Pegasus Boots and Sword to cross the room when the Vacuum Mouth tries to keep you away. Defeat it and open the chest to get a Key, then exit the room. Throw a pot at the northern door to open it, and continue into that room. This time in here, take the left path up through the next couple of rooms. Run through the crystals with the boots, and then in the following room, beat the small Gel. Now, backtrack to the room with the Bombites and take the right path to the north. When you get to the room with the Stalfos on the other side, beat them and open the chest that appears to get 200 rupees! From here, backtrack again to the dungeon's entrance and take the warp to the mini-boss room. Go south and out of the room, then unlock the first keyhole block. Follow the path going north and around the next few rooms, opening the keyhole blocks to reach the stairs at the end. Then, go down the stairs into a basement area. Use the Pegasus Boots to ram the Mega Thwomp, causing it to fall, then continue ahead to the next room. Here, use the Pegasus Boots and Roc's Feather to jump across the spike pit, then grab onto the ladder by the pipe. Then, go up to the top and climb down the other ladder to exit. In the new room, defeat the Pairodds with help from your Pegasus Boots and Sword. Take the winged hearts if needed, then go to the next room. Ignore the Keese and unlock the north door with the Nightmare's Key to enter the boss's room. After it taunts you from its hiding place, ram the wall to shake it off the ceiling and make it come down. Read the Bosses section of this guide for information on beating the Slime Eyes. After you beat them, take the Heart Container and go into the next room, and take the Sea Lily's Bell, the third Instrument! ========= Overworld ========= After you get warped back outside again, go east one screen and the owl will fly in again. It'll tell you to head towards the Yarna Desert. After it leaves, climb the stairs and go north, then head west a screen and drop down to the lower area. From there, continue north one and west one screen. Lift the rocks in the way and continue into Mabe Village again. This time around, go north of the shop and lift the rocks in front of the small building, and enter it. Inside, simply enter the bed and you will fall asleep. You will then get transported into the Dream Shrine itself. There, use your Sword and Pegasus Boots to dash through all the Arm Mimics as you make your way all the way around the shrine. When you reach the first set of steps, go up them and up the next set, and then open the chest at the next screen to get 100 rupees. Then, go back down and ram through the crystal, and go up the other steps. Open the chest to get the Ocarina. Now, go back down one set of steps and jump off the ledge, and exit the shrine to wake up. Then, just exit the Dream Shrine with your new item. Go south and west to the weather vane, and you will see Marin standing nearby. Talk to her and she will start to sing, and you will play along on the Ocarina. Answer yes when she asks if her song sticks with you, and you will learn your first song, "The Ballad of the Wind Fish"! After that, you have nothing more to do in the village for now (unless you have 980 rupees, then buy the Bow at the shop). So, go east two screens and lift the stones to exit the village. Continue east one screen to reach the warp area. From here, head east, north, and east to find a tree with a Honeycomb in it. Talk to Tarin and give him the Stick, and he will knock the Honeycomb out of the tree. After he runs away, take the Honeycomb and continue southward. On the next screen, bomb the large rock to clear the path, and go up the stairs to progress. From here, go east one screen, north one, east one, south two, and east one more screen. You should be at a screen with a sign and a lone bush next to some trees (K11 on the grid). Cut down the bush to reveal stairs leading into a secret passage. Down here, defeat the Shark and enter the second room. Use the Pegasus Boots and Sword to break through the crystal blocks, and go up the stairs at the other side. When you emerge above, go south two screens and head east one screen to enter the Animal Village. When you enter the Animal Village, go east one screen and south one. You'll see a building there; go inside and meet Chef Bear. Talk to him and give him the Honeycomb in exchange for the Pineapple. He will then tell you about the sleeping walrus by the entrance to the desert, and how Marin is the only one who can wake it! Leave the house and go south one screen, then west one to find a warp portal. Jump in to arrive at the other one, then go west into Mabe Village again. Back in the first village, make your way all the way west and south past the library and down the cliffs to the Toronbo Shores. Head eastward along the shore as far as you can, then go north and east a screen each to find a chest surrounded by rocks. Remove the rocks and open the chest to find 50 rupees, then go south to find Marin sitting by the shore. Talk to her and sit down for a while. After she is done talking, she will go back with you to the Animal Village. With Marin in tow, backtrack quite a bit through Mabe Village and through the warp portal to return to the Animal Village. You can also take a shortcut of sorts by going east of where you found Marin and jumping across a wide gap using the Pegasus Boots and Roc's Feather, but then you would have to go through an extra cave of enemies. Either way, once you arrive at the Animal Village, go to the empty area in the southwest section of town, and continue southward. Go south and east a couple of screens to find the walrus blocking the eastern path. Approach the walrus and agree to surprise the walrus, then Marin will begin to sing. This will cause the walrus to roll back into the water, clearing the path. With that done, Marin will head back to Animal Village, leaving you to enter the desert. So, go east into the Yarna Desert. Upon entering the desert, go north until you reach the quicksand area. The Lanmola will them emerge and you'll have to fight it. Slash it with your sword whenever it jumps out of the sand until it's defeated. After you beat it, take the Angler Key it leaves behind and you'll automatically sink into the quicksand into a cave below. When you land, collect the Angler Key again and bomb the north wall of the first room to find a Piece of Heart if you want. Then, go east and up the stairs to exit the cave. Back outside, go south, west, and south one screen apiece to meet the owl again. After it flies off, make your way back into the Animal Village and jump into the warp portal south of Chef Bear's house. When you emerge in the Ukuku Prairie area, head north a screen. Climb the steps and lift the stone, then continue north for two screens to reach the Witch's Hut. From there, go west one, north three, east one, and north one screen to E3 on the grid (one screen east of the Bottle Grotto). Once there, lift the stones in the way and take the northern path to the east screen. When you see stairs leading northward, follow them to reach the Wind Fish's Egg if you want. Otherwise, continue east for two screens to find a couple of enemies and a stone blocking the path. Lift the stone and go east, then down the steps on the next screen. At the bottom of the steps, go north one screen to the water and continue east for two screens. When you come to the keyhole, use the Angler Key to dry out the waterfall, revealing the dungeon entrance. Continue east to find the third warp portal; use it to activate it, then return here and head back west three screens to the stairs. Go south and west, then climb the stairs and lift the stone blocking the path. Take the northwest path ahead one screen, then take the stairs leading northward into the mountains. Lift the stones blocking the cave entrance on the ledge, and enter that cave. Go east to the second room of the cave, then cut down the dried coral and push the stones around to reach the stairs. Go up to the next room and head east to reach some more stairs. Take them to the top floor and enter the next room, where you will find a cave exit. Go out there to find a chest holding 50 rupees, then reenter the cave. Use the Pegasus Boots to get through the crystal blocks to reach the far eastern half of the room, then exit the cave there. Outside again, go south and east along the path until you see a ledge you can jump off of to the south. At that point, drop down and you will land in front of the dungeon below, so enter it. ======================== Level 4: Angler's Tunnel ======================== When you enter the Angler's Tunnel, go forward to the next room. There, beat the Spiked Beetles and the Gel to open the east door, then enter that room. Defeat another couple of Spiked Beetles and a Gel to open the south and west doors. Open the chest to get the Compass, then go into the south room. Here, get across the room and jump over the deep sections of water along the way. Defeat the Water Tektites, then cut your way to the chest and open it to get a Key. Next, go back out of this room, then go west to the following room. There, go up the steps and continue east for two rooms along the upper path. At the end, go down the steps and open the chest to get the Stone Beak. Now, go back up the steps and into the previous room. This time, go north for two rooms, east one, and north one more on the high path to reach a chest. Open it to get the Map. Then, go south one room and use the Pegasus Boots and Roc's Feather to jump across the pit, and enter the east room. Here, bomb the cracked block, and then push the solid block into the water. Open the chest to get a Key. From here, go north for two rooms. In the next room, destroy the cracked block with a bomb, then open the next chest to get another Key. Then, jump over the small area of deep water to the left and grab the winged hearts in the air if you want, otherwise leave the room. Go back south for two rooms and west one to the room with the pit. Jump across it and go up the steps, then head west into the next room. Head south two rooms, west one, and south another one to the area with the Spiked Beetles and Gel. Defeat them again and enter the east room, then unlock the door and continue eastward. In that room, follow the path around to the northern locked door. Defeat the Water Tektites along the way, then unlock the door and go north for two rooms. When you arrive at the south end of the pit room, jump across it and enter the north room. Use a Key on the block to remove it, then push the block forward and head into the west area. Here, defeat the Gels when they appear, then go south two rooms and west two rooms. Defeat the Peahats in the way and head into the north room where you will find a chest and more enemies. Defeat them and open the chest if you want to fight another Gel, otherwise continue into the northern room. In this room, ignore the five tiles (this is a puzzle we will solve later) and Water Tektites as you head east. In there, open the chest to get a Key. After that, backtrack through the last several rooms to the one with a locked door to the north. Unlock that door and you will have to fight the Cue Ball mini-boss. Attack its backside with your Sword until you defeat it. After that, go into the next room. The blocks will move to block the exits, but if you pull the switch in the corner to move the blocks away again. Then, quickly go into the west room. Defeat the Gels and open the chest to receive the Flippers, which allow you to swim in deep water! Now, go south into the next room. You will see five tiles here; step on each one in the order they flash to open the door. Keep this in mind for the other tile room we passed earlier, as well as the pattern. Anyway, go south one room and swim through the deep water leading into the east room. There, defeat the Gels and watch the Key fall through the hole to the floor below. Head into the east room and defeat the enemies, then go down the stairs. Head into the second basement room and dive into the water to retrieve the Key. Next, head back upstairs and continue west for two rooms. Push the block ahead of you to reach the west side, and head into the west room. In the tile room, you need to step on each tile in order. This order appears to be random for each game, so you simply need to remember the order shown to you in the room east and north of here. When you step on the tiles in order, some steps will appear, so go down them into the basement. Down here, trigger the Spiked Thwomp to fall, then run past as it rises up to reach the next room. Trigger the second one and get to the left side, then equip Roc's Feather. Cause the Spiked Thwomp to fall again, then quickly climb the ladder and jump onto it to reach the high ledge. Then, climb the ladder to emerge in the room above. There, go south to the next room and open the chest to get the Nightmare's Key. Now, go north and drop off the ledge to reach the lower area. Then, go into the east room. Swim across to the middle platform and step on the switch to open the door, and enter that room (if you want, you can go east and north one screen to reach a chest containing 50 rupees; there is a similar chest in the room south of the earlier pit room). Anyway, go forward and use a Key to remove the block, giving you access to the stairs, so go down them. In the entire basement area, just go left while defeating the Cheep Cheeps if you want, then go up the ladder at the end into a new room. Here, just go west to the following room and push the block in front of you forward. Then, defeat the Gels if you want before entering the boss room to the north. You will see some stairs in here, so go down them to enter a basement area. Dive into the water and go down to meet the Angler Fish boss! Read the Bosses section for help on beating it. After you beat it, take the Heart Container and go up out of the water and go up the ladders to the room above. Now, just go north into the next room and take the Surf Harp, completing the dungeon! ========= Overworld ========= After you get warped back outside of the Angler's Tunnel, go into the deep water with the Flippers and swim left one screen and enter the cave there. Swim up to the large fish there and when it asks if you have an Ocarina, say yes and it'll teach you a new song, "Manbo's Mambo". This will be song #2 on your Ocarina. After you learn it, exit the cave and swim east for four screens to find another cave. In there, dive in the water to find a Piece of Heart. Exit the cave and go back west three screens to the dungeon entrance. Go down the stairs nearby and head through the cave to emerge on dry land. When you emerge, go west one screen and step into the warp to return to the Animal Village. Once you get there, go east a screen and you will find that a ghost is now following you around. So, head north into the village and go north and west two screens to exit it. Outside of the village, go south two screens and west one to find a wooden bridge. Jump into the water there and swim north one screen, then head west two screens past the Catfish's Maw (we will return here soon). West of the dungeon, go up the stairs onto dry land and continue southward for two screens. Head west one screen and use the Pegasus Boots and Roc's Feather to jump over the gap. Then, head west another screen to find the ghost's house. Enter the house and the ghost will look around for a moment before asking you to take it to its grave. Make your way north and west through the Toronbo Shores region, then northward through Mabe Village and the Mysterious Woods. Get to the Witch's Hut, then head west a screen and lift the rock blocking access to the stairs. From there, go south a screen, then head west and north along the other path to reach the grave. The ghost will tell you to look inside a jar in its house before vanishing (it contains a Secret Seashell if you want to return). The owl will make an appearance as well. Once the owl leaves, leave the grave area and head up the other set of stairs. Lift the stone out of the way and head east one screen, then south three screens. Head west a couple of screens to reach Mabe Village, and buy the Bow at the shop for 980 rupees. If you don't have enough, fight enemies to gain rupees, revisit past dungeons and open chests you may have skipped to get more rupees quickly, or enter random caves throughout the world as many of them have rupees in chests. You can even steal it, but I wouldn't recommend that if you are trying to go for a no-death game, or don't want to be called THIEF for the rest of the game. Anyhow, once you have the Bow, head back east to the warp portal in Ukuku Prairie. Jump in to reach the Tal Tal Mountains portal. Jump into it again and you will cycle over to the Animal Village region. Upon your arrival this time, go east one, north two, and west two screens to exit the village once more. Go south two screens and west one to find the wooden bridge, then jump into the water. Swim north and west to reach the Catfish's Maw area once again. This time, swim into the alcove at the southwest end of the rocky barrier, then dive to find a hidden passage. Swim through that passage and defeat the Cheep Cheeps along the way, and emerge at the other end. You will now be in the middle area by the dungeon entrance, so go ahead and enter it. ====================== Level 5: Catfish's Maw ====================== NOTE: You must have the Bow at this point or you can not progress through this dungeon! From the start of this dungeon, go left two rooms while avoiding the enemies in the second room. In the third room, defeat the four Keese and the Iron Mask to open the west door, then go through the door into the next room. In there, open the chest to get the Compass, then avoid the enemies and go down the steps. Here, use Roc's Feather to jump from platform to platform quickly through the couple of rooms in the basement. At the end, climb the ladder and enter the next room. In the next room, defeat the four Stalfos and cut down all the coral blocks until the whole room is clear. Then, push the top two blocks towards each other so it forms a square, causing a Key to appear. Take it and go back down the steps into the basement. Get through the side-scrolling areas by running to the right on the ground, then climb the ladder at the end to exit. When you emerge, defeat the two Iron Masks to open the door and enter the east room. Here, use the Key on the north door and enter that room. In this room, just run northward through it to reach the following room. There, defeat the three Stalfos to open the door, then go through it into the following room. In this room, you'll meet the Master Stalfos for the first time. Fight him by hitting him with your Sword, then put a Bomb on the pile of bones to cause damage. Continue that until he runs away. Then, continue right to the next room. Here, don't even waste your time opening the chest unless you want to see that it's empty and Master Stalfos stole what was inside. From here, go north into the next room. In that room, push the middle block forward and go west to that room. Then, turn around and go back into the previous room. Now, push the middle block to the right and go north into the next room. Return to the previous room yet again and hit the floor switch to open the east door. Then, push the block downward and enter the east room. You will meet Master Stalfos for the second time. Attack him like you did before until he flees, then exit the room. Push the middle block to the left and go up into that room. Jump over the small pit and defeat the Hooded Stalfos and the Star, then continue north to the following room. There, defeat the Sword Stalfos and Star if you want, otherwise continue west into the next room. There, defeat the two Gels you can reach, then lift up the pot in the middle area and walk along the blocks to trigger another Gel on the other side of the room. Defeat it as well to open the north door. Go into that room to face Master Stalfos for the third time. Following that fight, go into the west room. Lift up the pots so you can enter the room, then defeat the Stalfos and open the chest to get the Map. Now, backtrack all the way to the room with the five blocks and the switch. There, push the middle block downward and go west to the next room. Then, reenter the room you just left and push the block to the right, and head into the south room. When you arrive, simply go into the west room where you fought Master Stalfos the first time. From here, go south three rooms. In the room you end up at, defeat the enemies to open the door, and head west. In this room, go to the back and head down the stairs into the basement. Use Roc's Feather to get through the basement rooms, then when you emerge, enter the west room. You will face Master Stalfos for the fourth and final time. Defeat him and pick up the Hook Shot he leaves behind! Now, backtrack to the room with the four Keese and the Iron Mask (or as a shortcut, play Manbo's Mambo on your Ocarina to be warped to the entrance of the dungeon, and head west two rooms). When you get to this room, take the upper path back into the east room. Use the Hook Shot on the chest to get across the gap, then open it to get 200 rupees. Hookshot back across the gap and leave the room, then go north into the next room. Head west this time and avoid the Blade Traps, then defeat the Iron Masks (you can use the Hook Shot to pull off their masks, making it easier to kill them) to open the doors. Then, go into the north room. In there, defeat the Gels and continue into the west room. Use the Hook Shot to cross the pits with Blade Traps guarding them, and go into the room ahead. Hook Shot over to the chest and open it to get a Key. After that, go back east for two rooms. In the room with the Gels, use the Hook Shot on the small hook on the other side of the pit to stretch a bridge for you to walk across. Go across and head into the north room. Use the Key on the keyhole block, then go left into the room with the two Gohmas! When their eyes open, shoot arrows into them to cause damage (this is why you need the Bow). You can play the Ballad of the Wind Fish on the Ocarina to make them open their eyes instantly. After you beat them both, exit the same way you can in (lower-right path). Now, go south for two rooms, then east one. Continue into the north room and defeat the Stalfos to open the door, then continue north and east one room each. When you get to the empty chest room, go into the north room and push the block ahead, then head west. Defeat the enemies if you want while dodging the Blade Traps, and follow the watery path into the next room. You will see a deep pool of water in the middle of this area. Dive into the middle of it until you end up in a hidden basement room. Swim through the two basement rooms while defeating the Bloobers you come across. At the end, climb the ladder to enter a new room. In there, use the Hook Shot on the hook to expand a bridge for you, then go around and open the chest to get the Nightmare's Key. Once you have that key, go back through the basement area and emerge in the other room. Head south and east one room each to reach the block room. Push the block to the right and enter the north room from here. Jump over the first gap, then get onto the small ledge directly across from the chest on the other side of the pit. Use the Hook Shot to get across, and open the chest to get 50 rupees. Next, go into the east room and Hook Shot over to another chest. Open it to get a Key. Hook Shot back across and exit the room, then Hook Shot the hook to extend a bridge over the north pit. Cross it and open that chest to get another 50 rupees. Once you do that, play Manbo's Mambo on the Ocarina to return to the dungeon entrance. Back at the entrance, walk into the warp to be brought to where you beat the Gohmas. Then, take the upper-right path to the next room, and go down the steps to enter the basement. Climb down the ladder and go ahead into the second room. There, look above you and use the Hook Shot on the statue head to get pulled onto the high ledge. Continue up the ladder and enter the new room above. In this room, use the Key on the keyhole block to remove it, then go north and around the blocks. Hook Shot across the gap and enter the next room. Unlock the boss room and go in to meet the Slime Eel. Read the Bosses section for information on beating it. After you beat it, take the Heart Container and enter the next room, then go up and take the Wind Marimba! ========= Overworld ========= After you're back outside of the Catfish's Maw, swim down to the rocks, then into the southwest corner. Dive into the water to reach the underwater passageway; swim through it and emerge at the other side of the rocks. From here, go east one screen and north two, then climb onto dry land via the bottom steps. From here, go east a screen and north for two more. Continue east for two screens and you will meet the owl once again. It will point you to the southern shrine first, which is where we are heading. So, head east for two more screens, then head southward. Since this area is infested with Armos statues, be sure to follow my directions EXACTLY as I say them in order to get through this area easily. For now, just go straight ahead to the southern area. Turn right and defeat the Gels as you head to the southmost area, and follow the path westward. In the next area, go all the way west to the barrier and turn northward. Take out your Shield and hold it in front of you as you bounce the Armos statue to the left out of the way, allowing you to progress (if you don't use the shield, you have to fight it). Continue into the next screen, then head north from there. At the path split, go left and use the Shield to move the Armos statues there. Once you get through, continue south and west one screen each. Use the Shield to push aside the last few Armos Knights, then continue northward to the Southern Shrine. =============== Southern Shrine =============== Inside here, When you enter the southern shrine, go up into the next room and be prepared to fight the Armos Knight! Equip Roc's Feather on one button and the Bow to the other and you'll be set to fight. Wait until it starts to move, then attack it. Beat it by shooting it repeatedly with your arrows. Jump with the feather when the knight jumps and stomps on the ground. After shooting it around 12 times, it'll be defeated and you'll get the Face Key! Since it's unnecessary to enter the following room (unless you want to know more about the story), just go back down a couple rooms and back outside again. ========= Overworld ========= Back outside, backtrack through the maze of Armos statues until you reach the area with the flying bomb-throwing enemy and Tektites. Once there, go west a screen and equip the Power Bracelet. Defeat the Tektites, then lift the stones and head northward to the next area. Lift the single stone to the left and cut down more bushes, then lift some more stones to continue westward. Then, continue west to find stairs leading into the water (if you bomb the wall, you can find a Fairy Fountain if you want health recovery). Go down the southern steps into the water and swim south one screen. Get onto the island and touch the left Armos statue to activate it. Kill it with a single arrow, then go down the steps to enter a secret passage. Down there, go through the water and defeat the Sharks to reach the second room. Hook Shot across the large gap and exit the cave to the north. On the new ledge, go around the corner to the next screen. Approach the keyhole and you will use the Face Key to open the shrine's entrance above. Go around and head up the stairs, then enter the Face Shrine. ==================== Level 6: Face Shrine ==================== Starting off, go into the west room. In there, follow the left path into the north room. Defeat the Mini Moldorm if you want, otherwise continue north and west to a room with a crystal switch. Here, defeat the Mask Mimic here, then place a Bomb next to the crystal switch and run behind the upper-right lowered block. When the switch is triggered, the blocks will rise and you should be behind the upper-right one, so continue into the north room. In here, bomb the eastern wall between the wall lamps and you will reveal a hidden passage. Enter the darkened room, and defeat the four Gels inside. When the enemies are all defeated, stairs will appear, so go into the basement. Make your way through both rooms while avoiding the Giant Bubbles floating around. Climb up the ladder at the end and you will be in a room with lowered blocks (thanks to the crystal switch). In here, defeat the Mini Moldorm and two Wizzrobes (use Bomb Arrows to defeat them easily). When the door opens, go into the north room. Open the chest on the ledge to receive the Level 2 Power Bracelet, which allows you to lift heavier and larger objects! The pot on the opposite ledge hides a fairy if you want it. Anyway, lift the large statues and head through the one-way door to proceed. Back in the crystal switch room, hit the crystal switch again to lower the blocks. Place a Bomb by the switch and hide behind the upper-left block, then when the blocks are raised by the switch, go into the north room. On the west side this time, lift the pots to reveal a floor switch; step on it to open the door, then enter the west room. Defeat the three Wizzrobes in here with Bomb Arrows to make a chest appear. Open it to receive the Map. Then, head into the north room. Defeat the Gels, then pick up a pot and throw it at the locked door to open it, and enter that room. In the next room, simply continue into the eastern room ahead. Open the chest to get the Compass, then defeat the Star and go up the stairs. Hit the crystal switch in the corner, then follow the path going east and south into a new room. Continue east for two rooms, then north one room. You will arrive in a room where the blocks are lowered (if not, then go back and hit the crystal switch again). In there, defeat the Wizzrobes and grab the Key that appears. After that, backtrack to the chest where you found the Compass. Then, go into the west room again. Pick up one of the large statues and throw it at the north door to open it, and enter that room. Open the chest on the ledge to get 100 rupees. If you need a Secret Seashell, go up the stairs to exit the shrine and end up on an island in the Rapids Ride. Open the chest there to get the shell (or 20 rupees if you have the L-2 Sword). Back in the room, play Manbo's Mambo to return to the dungeon's entrance. This time, head into the eastern room. Get through the room while avoiding the Blade Traps and throwing away the large statues as needed. In the room ahead, destroy all of the Flying Tiles as they uproot from the floor, and enter the north room when the door opens. There, take a statue and throw it at the east door to open it, then enter the room. Defeat the Wizzrobes in here, then head into the next room to the north. Make your way north for three rooms, and open the chest you reach to get a Key. With it, backtrack through the last several rooms until you reach the room with a locked door to the north. Use the Key to unlock it, and enter that room. Defeat the Gels in that room, then bomb the north wall to find a hidden path. In that next room, you will face the Smasher mini-boss. Avoid getting hit by the orb it throws, then pick it up and throw it to damage the enemy. Once you defeat the mini-boss, grab the fairy and note the warp, then enter the north room. There are two statues in this room; lift up the left one and go down the stairs that are revealed. In the basement, use Roc's Feather to get across the rooms, then climb up the ladder at the end to emerge in a new room above. There, get to a plain section of floor and destroy the Flying Tiles as they appear. When they are gone, jump over the pits and grab the Key that appears. Use it on the keyhole block, and enter the north room. Grab the winged Bombs, then throw the large statue at the door to open it. In the room ahead, there are two horse heads you can throw around. Toss them around until both are standing upright to open the next door. Go into the west room and head down the stairs to reach another basement segment. Use the Pegasus Boots to get through both Thwomp-filled rooms safely. When you climb into the new room at the end, play the Ballad of the Wind Fish to defeat the three Pols Voices. Then, enter the room to the south. In this room, defeat the Dodongo Snakes using Bombs, then enter the west room. Go north to the edge and Hook Shot across to the other ledge. Unlock the keyhole block and continue north for two rooms. At the last room, lift up a pot and throw it at the chest to open it, getting you the Nightmare's Key. With it, play Manbo's Mambo to return to the entrance. Once htere, step into the warp to reach the mini-boss room again. Here, go north to the next room and lift the left statue to reveal stairs. Go down them to reach the basement, and get through it like before. When you emerge in the Flying Tile room, head into the south room. There, go around the room to make four Gels appear. Allow them to get sucked into the pit by the Vacuum Mouth, then go through the east door when it opens. In the next room, push the lower block to the right and use a Bomb Arrow to kill the Wizzrobe across the pit. After that, jump over the pit and push the left block forward to reach the door. In the north room, use Magic Powder to light the two unlit lanterns, causing the door to turn the Sparks into fairies! Recover your health, then enter the boss room ahead. You will meet Façade inside; read the Bosses section of this guide for information on beating this boss. After you beat it, take the Heart Container and enter the last room to obtain the Coral Triangle, which is the sixth Instrument! ========= Overworld ========= Outside, go south a screen and you will see the owl again. After it leaves, continue down the steps and jump into the water below. Swim west one screen and go up the steps there, then continue west for two more screens. From there, go north one screen, west one, south one, and west one screen each. Continue through the next several screens until you reach the warp portal near Mabe Village. From that point, go west one and south two screens. You will see some pits blocking access ahead. Use the Pegasus Boots and Roc's Feather to jump over the gap, then read the nearby sign once. After you do that, go south and enter the Signpost Maze (make sure you have 300 rupees). This enclosed four-screen area comprises the Signpost Maze. There are signs all around, but you must read them in a specific order to solve the maze. Each sign will give you a direction to move in, and the idea is that you must move directly from that sign in the designated direction to reach the next sign. Reading the wrong sign will force you to start from the beginning by the pits. Please consult my Signpost Maze Map, found at GameFAQs, to get through this area easily: http://db.gamefaqs.com/portable/gbcolor/file/zelda_dx_signpost.gif After you get to the last sign and read it, a staircase will appear nearby. Take it into an underground chamber, and walk towards the large frog named Mamu (it resembles Wart from SMB2 for those of you who remember). It'll start talking to you and offer to play its song only if you pay it 300 rupees. Pay it, listen to the song, then after it's finished, you'll learn the Frog's Song of Soul (the third song on your Ocarina)! Then, go back up the steps to get back outside. Now, go north two screens to the scene with the large pit. Jump over it like before, then continue north to the following screen. Lift up the stones, then cut down the bushes and go west to Mabe Village. Back in the village, continue west for two screens to find the weather vane. Push it to the north to reveal some stairs; go down them and enter the second room to find some bones on a ledge. Stand in front of the bones and play the Frog's Song of Soul on the Ocarina to revive the Flying Rooster! Now that you have the Rooster, you can use the Power Bracelet to pick it up and fly around, allowing access across very wide gaps with no points to Hook Shot onto. Anyway, when you are outside, play Manbo's Mambo to warp to Manbo's Pond next to Crazy Tracy's Health Spa (you can buy Secret Medicine here). When you reach the pond, go east one, north two, and west one screen. Lift the stones in the way, then take the upper path east a screen. Continue ahead for one more screen, then go up the stairs to reach the northern screen. The owl will appear yet again, so listen to what it has to say. When it leaves, lift the stones and enter the first cave there. Make your way through the cave like you did earlier in the game, using the Pegasus Boots and Sword to dash through the crystal blocks. Take the eastern exit out of the cave, then when you are back outside, head east several screens until you reach the deep water. Swim over to the stairs and follow them to the northern screen. At the top, go west across the bridge for two screens. You will come to another cave and a building in the top area (this is the Hen House). Enter the cave there. Inside, follow the path into the second room. Then, get to the lower-left corner of the room and use the Rooster to reach the northern exit from the room. In the following room, use the Rooster to get across the large pit to the west end. Then, go to the next room and grab the Bird Key from the platform. With that done, simply jump into one of the holes and you will end up back outside a few screens away! When you land, head east for three screens, crossing the deep portion, and enter the cave at the end. In here, simply make your way through the cave to the other end and exit (if you want to find a Secret Seashell and more rupees, there is a dry patch in the first room; bomb the north wall and go through the rooms to end up outside on a ledge where the shell would be). Anyway, when you exit the cave normally, head east one screen and go up the stairs to reach another cave. Get through that straightforward cave as well, then when you exit, go west and enter another cave. Go through the first room, then head up the stairs and follow the upper path southward. At the end of the path, Hook Shot across the gap and continue south to exit the cave. When you emerge, defeat the Tektite and bomb the cracked wall to reveal a Fairy Fountain if you want. Otherwise, go into the northeast cave. Make your way through the cave and you will emerge at the top of the mountains at last. Go west a screen and you will see a tower with a keyhole nearby. Lift the stones out of the way and use the Bird Key to rotate the tower, revealing an entrance. Then, go inside the tower to start Level 7! ====================== Level 7: Eagle's Tower ====================== Starting off, go east for two rooms. avoiding the Blade Traps in the second room. Defeat the Like Likes in the corner room to get a Key, then unlock the door to continue northward. In the next room, simply go up the stairs to level 2F. There, go into the north room and you will see an orb. This will play an important role for most of this dungeon, so equip the Power Bracelet. When you pick up the orb, keep the button pressed and go to the upper-right corner, then pull the lever back to separate the blocks. Then, run into the west room through the opening. Defeat the Gels, then throw the orb at the first column to destroy it. After that, grab the orb and throw it across the raised blocks to the south area. As for yourself, jump diagonally over the pits to the lower-right corner and enter the south room. Go around to the west side and back to the previous room, and take the orb with you. In the south room again, throw the orb at the second column to clear it. Next, take the orb and carry it into the southern room. Throw it over the barrier to the outer area, then hit the crystal switch. Once you hit the switch, play Manbo's Mambo to return to the entrance. This time, go east two rooms and take the right doorway into the north room as you did before. Continue north and up the stairs to 2F again. This time, the blocks will be lowered thanks to the crystal switch, so open the chest to get the larger Mirror Shield. Next, go south and stand on the lowered blocks, then trigger the crystal switch to raise the blocks. While standing on the raised blocks, go into the south room. In this room, go past the keyhole block and enter the following room to where you left the orb earlier. Leave the orb here for now and continue up the stairs to 3F. There, head north and east a room each to meet the Grim Creeper mini-boss. Defeat the six Big Keese he summons and he will retreat, leaving a warp behind. From here, continue into the next room. Push the two blocks together to make a chest appear; open it to get the Nightmare's Key. Now, backtrack through the last few rooms and head back downstairs to 2F. Pick up the orb and go into the west room. Here, drop the orb and beat the Three-of-a-Kinds to make a chest appear. Pick up the orb and continue to the next room. Throw the orb on the ground and fight the Hinox (if the orb falls, it will end up in its initial position in the room north of where you found the Mirror Shield; if you fall, you'll simply land on 1F so backtrack here via the warp). After you beat the Hinox, grab the Key and take the orb into the north room. In here, carry the orb northward through the one-day door to proceed. In there, throw the orb into the corner and defeat the Flying Tiles. Also, defeat the Anti-Fairy with some Magic Powder (it will turn into a Fairy). When the door opens, grab the orb and head east. There, throw the orb at the third column to destroy it. Then, push the block to the right into the pit and throw the orb across to the other side. Now, look at the south wall and you'll see two torches; place a Bomb between them to reveal a hidden passage. Go into the south room and bomb the next wall as well. Continue into the next room and Hook Shot across the pit to the chest. Open it to get a single Bomb. Since the chest will no longer disappear (this is why you must kill the Three-of-a-Kinds before), drop into the pit to land on 1F. You will land back at the entrance; go east two rooms and north two rooms to the stairs, and go back up to 2F. Back up here, go into the north room and pull the lever back to move the blocks apart, then continue into the west room. Jump across the pits to the lower-right corner, and continue south for two rooms. Hit the crystal switch in the southernmost room, then go back north a room. Take the upper-left path into the north room ahead. Push the block to the north and enter the west room, where you will find the orb you threw across the pit earlier. Take the orb and go back into the east room, and push the block ahead to escape. Continue south for two rooms, and throw the orb over the barrier by the crystal switch so you can retrieve it at the other side. Now, hit the crystal switch again, then play Manbo's Mambo to warp to the entrance of the tower. Once you get there, step into the warp to get to 3F. From there, go west and south a room and go down the stairs to 2F. Back in the room with the orb, grab it and enter the west room. Get to the edge by the pit and throw the orb directly across the pit to the other side. Once it lands on the other end, go west one room and north two rooms. Defeat the Flying Tiles and Anti-Fairy, then go into the east room. Head south through the passage you bombed open earlier, then Hook Shot across to the chest. Grab the orb and enter the north room, and throw it at the final column. It will cause the top floor of the tower to come crashing down, replacing the existing 3F. Now, play Manbo's Mambo and return to the dungeon entrance. Step into the warp and you will return to 3F. Go into the west room and you will find that the middle area of this floor has been changed. So, continue into the next room to the west and defeat the Goombas there (if you jump on them, they will drop hearts). After that, unlock the boss door to the north and enter that room. Go up the steps and Hook Shot across to the right side of the room. Then, follow the path south and east to some stairs. Go up those stairs and you will be outside of the tower. Climb the ladder and you will encounter the Grim Creeper again, who will be picked up by the Evil Eagle. You then face the Evil Eagle in battle, so read the Bosses section for help winning. Once you win, take the Heart Container and climb back down the ladder, and go back inside. Now, drop down to the lower ledge to the right and into the now open room to claim the Organ of Evening Calm! ========= Overworld ========= Now that you're outside of the Eagle's Tower, walk straight down and fall off the edge of the cliff. You'll fall into a pit on the next screen, then land in an area of deep water at the bottom of the mountain range. Swim out of the cave and go south one screen, then go up the steps onto the dry land. If you go north and Hook Shot across to the east side, you can enter a building and ride the rapids on a raft if you want. Anyway, head all the way west until you reach some stairs, then go up them. Go west and lift the stone in the way, then continue north and west one screen each. You should see some stairs leading northward, so go up them to the next screen. Lift the stones out of the way, and enter the cave there. Get through the cave, then dash through the crystal blocks to reach the far eastern exit. Back outside, go east one screen and head down the steps, then continue east for three screens. There, jump into the deep water and head up the long set of stairs to the north area. Cross the bridge and head west two screens, then head up the steps to end up in front of the Hen House. From here, go west a screen and you will find Marin stuck on the middle of the broken bridge. Hook Shot across to pull her across, then Tarin will call to her and she will leave. Following this, the owl will appear and talk to you briefly. Once he leaves, go west to the next screen and cut down the bush, then enter the passage. Inside the cave, drop off the ledge and head into the west room (if you bomb the southernmost wall, you can reveal a passage leading to a Piece of Heart). Drop down to the lower ledge and head down the stairs to reach the next area. There, go ahead and use the Hook Shot to cross the wide gap, then continue out of the cave. You will now have to deal with falling boulders for the western segment of the Tal Tal Mountains. Make your way along the path going west, then up the steps and back east before going up more steps. On the upper plateau, go west and open a chest to get 50 rupees. If you lift the nearby stone, you can enter a room and sprinkle Magic Powder in the hole to awaken a Mad Batter, who will increase your arrow-carrying capacity. After that, go west a screen and drop down to the southern area below. When you land, go around the corner and bomb the cracked wall to open up a cave. Enter it and continue into the second room, where you will find a flame-shooting device in the wall blocking your progress. Hold the Mirror Shield up and walk through the flames, then continue out of the cave. Back outside, continue all the way west through the next several areas until you reach the stone turtle. Play the Frog's Song of Soul (#3 on the Ocarina) to make the head come to life and attack. Hit it repeatedly with your Sword to kill it, then enter the cave, which is Turtle Rock. ==================== Level 8: Turtle Rock ==================== From where you begin, go straight up the hall to the following room. Here, use Roc's Feather and the Sword to defeat the elusive Winged Demon and unlock the doors. Then, enter the west room. In this room, defeat the Snake Ropes while avoiding the laser eye that shoots lasers at you. Then, go north through the door into the next room. Defeat the Hinox in this room like you have many times in the past dungeons, then take the small Fairy that appears and go west into the next room. In this room, you'll see a weird block in front of you; walk into it to get it moving. Let it go all the way left, then down until it stops, then walk along the path going into the south room. Here, jump over the small gap and avoid the Sparks, then open the chest to get 50 rupees. Now, jump back over the gap and go into the west room, where you'll fight the Rolling Bones mini- boss. Defeat it by jumping over the spiked log it pushes towards you then hit it repeatedly with your Sword. After it's defeated and the doors open, go north into the next room. Defeat the Winged Demon flying around, then take the Key that falls from above. Now, play Manbo's Mambo to warp to the entrance of Turtle Rock. When you arrive there, go north to the following room and jump over to the northern platform, then head into the next room. Here, simply go east to the next room and you will find another of those blocks that create tiles as it moves. Stand directly below it and push it to move, then let it go across to the north side and stop. Then, walk across the new path and jump over the lava to the ledge to the left, and go north to the next room. Here, head west to the connecting room and go down the steps there into the basement (if you bomb the cracked wall and go into the south room, you can push the blocks around to reach the chest containing the Map). In the basement, jump from ledge to ledge to the other side of the screen. Be sure to jump when the fireballs aren't coming up out of the lava; one way to avoid them is to jump as they drop into the lava again. In the next area of this basement floor, jump and grab onto the small ladder, then go right along them while avoiding the Podoboos that come from the lava below. Climb the ladder at the end to enter the room above. There, lift up the pots throughout the room and throw them at the snake enemies. If you miss with the pots, just attack them with the sword. Open the chest in the room to get the Stone Beak, then go north to the next room. Here, you'll have to fight the mini-boss, Smasher. Defeat it by throwing the orb it throws around back at it. Repeat that process until it's defeated, then take the Fairy that appears and go west into the next room. Here, you'll find another one of those tile-making blocks. This time you have to push it around so it covers up ALL the gaps in the floor. Get to the right side of the box and push it to get it going, then have it move in the following path: Left 2, up 1, left 1, up 1, left 1, up 1, left 2, down 1, right 2, down 1, right 1, down 1, right 1, down 1, right 1, down 1, right 1, up 1, right 1, down 1, and right 1. A Key will appear upon completion of this puzzle; take it and play Manbo's Mambo to return to the dungeon entrance. When you get back there, head north for two rooms. Head east to the room with the tile-making block. Push that block upward to make it move, then let it go up three spaces, right two, and up one (so the path ends between the two blocks at the north end). When it stops, walk along this path you made. When you get to the blocks, push the one to the right into the lava, then continue north to the next room. Here, go up and use a Key on the keyhole block, then go east to the next room. Go right through this room and defeat the Winged Demon if you want, then unlock the door with your Key and go into the next room. Here, use Roc's Feather to help avoid the Blade Traps, then go through the one-way door to the north. In the next room, walk around and defeat the four Gels hiding in the room. After you beat them all, the north door will open, so head into that room. In there, go up to the area with the cracked floor and defeat the Gibdos while constantly moving around to avoid falling through the floor. Also, jump in the air and grab the winged Magic Powder and hearts. Then, take the Key that appears and go around the blocks and go west to the next room. Here, avoid the Dodongo Snakes and continue into the next room to the west. In this room, jump over the lava-filled gap and stand on the middle platform. Defeat the Gels as you jump across the lava, and unlock the western door before entering that room. Head around the barrier blocking the boss room and continue ahead. In the next room, defeat the enemies and go up the steps to end up on a ledge outside of the dungeon. Out there, defeat a Mini Moldorm and a Crow, then climb the steps and take a Piece of Heart. Then, continue east for two screens to find another cave. Go back into the dungeon via that cave, and you will now be on the ledge above the Dodongo Snakes. Defeat them by throwing Bombs downward when you line up with them properly. When both are defeated, open the chest on the ledge to get a Key. Now, go west to the next room and drop off the high ledge. Then, continue west for two rooms until you reach the room with the stairs leading outside. From there, go south to the next room and take out the Bow. Shoot an arrow at the cyclops statue's eye to make a Key appear. Take it and go west into the next room. In this room, walk around and stand right next to the chest on its left side. Push the block in front of you downward, and then push the one to the right of you to the right. Now, open the chest to get a Key. After that, play Manbo's Mambo on the Ocarina to warp to the entrance of Turtle Rock. Once you get there, go north a couple of rooms, then go east one. You'll be in the room with the tile-making block. Push it upward to get it moving, then make it go up only one square before having it turn right for the rest of the journey. When it stops in the lower-right corner, walk along the path and head into the east room. Go straight to the wall and place a Bomb there. When it explodes and another passage opens, take it into that room and hit the crystal switch in that room. Then, play Manbo's Mambo again to warp to the level's entrance. Now that you're back at the entrance, go north two and east one room to the tile-making block. Move it up three, right two, up one (between the two northern blocks). Follow that path to the end and push the right block into the lava, and continue into the north room. Next, go east for two rooms, then through the one-way door into the following room. Here, defeat some Gels, then bomb the west wall to open up a hidden path. Enter that darkened room and use Magic Powder in the nearby lantern to partially light the room, then jump across the pit. Defeat the Gels over there and unlock the keyhole block, then enter the next room. Here, you will find another dark room to navigate. Just go up and left, and defeat a Snake Rope. Then, follow the path into the west room. Here, simply go up the steps and use the Key on the keyhole block, then head east up there. In that room, go right and light a lantern with Magic Powder. Now that you can see, use the Hook Shot on a block towards the bottom of the screen to be pulled to the other ledge. Then, use your last Key and go down the steps. In this section of the basement, wait until the platform moves as far to the left as possible, then jump onto it. Ride it to the right and jump over the small ledge halfway across the lava. Also, avoid the Podoboos that come out of the lava as well. Jump onto the ledge to the right and enter the next room. Here, jump across the moving platforms, and then go up the ladder into the next room. Out here, drop off the ledge and go down into the next room to fight Blaino, the new mini-boss. Use your Sword and the spinning attack to defeat it easily; be careful though since if it winds up and punches you, you will be sent back to the dungeon entrance! After you win, go into the north room and open the chest to receive the Magic Rod. Now, go back to the room where you fought Blaino and enter the warp to get to the dungeon's entrance again. Once there, go north to the next room. Defeat the Winged Demon, and then go west into the next room. Here, beat the snakes to open the door; go through it to fight Hinox. Beat it, and then go west to the next room. Push the block left until you can move it up. At that point, move it up and go into the north room. Here, defeat the Snake Ropes, then take out the Magic Rod and use it to light the two out-of-reach lanterns to make a chest appear. Open it to get a Key. Now, backtrack a few rooms back to the second room where you saw the Winged Demon. From there, go north and east one room each to reach the tile-making block. Push it up one square and then all the way right to the corner. Follow the path along and go up the southern stairs, and go up the steps to reach a basement room. Use the Magic Rod to melt the ice, then defeat the Goombas and enter the second room. Here, jump with Roc's Feather and use the Magic Rod to melt ONLY the second row of ice. Then, jump onto the bottom ice row and head down the ladder to exit the room. In this room, go down and unlock the door with your final Key and enter that room to fight Cue Ball. Beat it like you did in the Angler's Tunnel, then go into the north room. Here's another room with that annoying tile-making block. Here, follow my directions EXACTLY and you'll do it all correctly. Start by getting below the block, then push it upward: Up 3, right 2, down 1, right 1, up 1, right 2, down 2, left 4, down 2, right 1, up 1, right 1, down 1, right 1, down 1, right 1. If done correctly, a chest should appear in the right side of the room; open it to get the Nightmare's Key. Now, play Manbo's Mambo yet again to warp to the entrance. When you get there, go north two and east one room to the tile- making block room. Push it upward so it moves, then let it go up one square and all the way right. Walk right along this path to the next room and go up the steps in the northeast corner. The first thing to do here is climb up to the top of the ladder, then melt the ice directly to the left of your position. Then, go left to the wall and shoot upward to melt the ice there above you. Next, jump up and shoot to the left to melt the row of ice. Jump onto the ledge and take a step to the left. Shoot downward with the Magic Rod to melt the ice and kill a Goomba below! When you land on the lower platform, go left to the wall and then shoot up at the other vertical row of ice. Next, jump up and shoot to the right to melt some more ice. Now, go right and jump onto the ice block that I didn't tell you to melt. Go right to the wall, then go left and jump in the air and shoot the ice block to the left with the Magic Rod. Then, jump across to the ledge and enter the second room. Here, climb down the ladder to the floor below and shoot the Magic Rod to the left to melt the bottom row of ice. Then, stand below the second column of ice from the right and shoot upward to melt it. Now, climb back up the ladder and fall onto the lone ice cube next to it. Then, jump left to the steps that the ice blocks make and continue to the ladder. Climb down it to reach the next room. There, simply unlock the boss door and go into the room to meet Hothead. Read the Bosses section for help on beating Hothead. After you beat it, take the Heart Container and go up into the next room and take the Thunder Drum, the final Instrument! ========= Overworld ========= Now that you've pretty much completed all of the game's objectives, the only thing left is to go to the Wind Fish's Egg for the final showdown. If you didn't do it already, you can go find the game's secret item, the Boomerang (see the Secrets section for help). Aside from that, to get to the Wind Fish's Egg, first play Manbo's Mambo to reach Manbo's Pond. Once there, use the Power Bracelet and lift up the stone next to the pond, and go west to the next screen. Then, jump over the pits with Roc's Feather and go north one screen, then east one and north one more. Lift the stones to reach the upper area, then go east to the next area. Go up the steps you see to reach the northern area. If you didn't come here earlier, the owl will appear. After he leaves, go up the stairs to the Wind Fish's Egg itself. Play the Ballad of the Wind Fish on the Ocarina, and the eight Instruments will cause a crack to appear in the egg, allowing you to enter. If you are ready, go inside. =============== Wind Fish's Egg =============== Inside the dark egg, walk directly north to the next room. Here, just keep walking and you'll fall into a pit. You'll land in a light room with four different ways you can go. To find the way to go, you will need to read a special book in the Library west of Mabe Village (the Magnifying Lens is required). I will also list them here, though they can be found in the Secrets section as well. Path 1: Left, Left, Up, Right, Right, Up, Left, Up Path 2: Left, Up, Right, Up, Left, Up, Right, Up Path 3: Right, Up, Up, Right, Up, Up, Right, Up Path 4: Left, Left, Left, Left, Up, Up, Up, Up At the end of the path that works for you, you'll come to a pit; drop into it and prepare for the final showdown with the Nightmares! Read the Bosses section for help with defeating each of the Nightmare Shadows. After you beat them, you'll know what to do next. After that, congratulations, you just completed Zelda: Link's Awakening! ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 7. Color Dungeon Guide -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= There is a hidden dungeon, which you can only enter if you're playing Zelda DX in the Game Boy Color unit. To get into it, go to the Cemetery and look for the section of it with only five tombstones on the screen. First, go to the bottom center stone and push it downward. Next, push the lower left stone to the left. Then, push the upper left stone upward. Next, push the middle stone in the top row to the right. Finally, push the upper right tombstone upward to reveal the stairs leading into the dungeon! In the first room inside, talk to the two color guys at the top of the screen and answer both of their questions to pass them. In the next room, defeat the 3 color enemies that come out of the ground, then enter the room to the right. In this room, there are 4 colored eyeball statues; two are red, two are blue. Your job is to strike them with your sword until they're all blue. Whenever you hit one, the statues to its sides change color, so keep that in mind. To make this set entirely blue, strike the top-left statue, then the bottom-right one; they'll all be blue and a chest will appear. Open the chest to get the Compass, then go to the next room. In the next room, bounce your way across the multi-colored tiles to the other side, then go through the right door to the next room. In this room, there are two creatures: one with a red shell, one with a blue. There are also two holes in the room, one with a red rim and the other one with a blue rim. You have to strike the shell guys so they curls up into their shells, then pick them up with the Power Bracelet or hit them with your sword into their corresponding holes. Open the chest that appears to get the Stone Beak, then go down (not up) to the next room. In the next room, defeat the four color enemies that come out of the floor to attack like before to open the door to the next room. Continue into the next room and you'll see those multi-colored tiles again with a couple flying enemies above them. Bounce across towards the solid piece of land with a chest on it while trying to avoid the floating enemies, then open the chest to get a Key. Next, bounce to the top of the room and go through the one-way door; in the room you end up in, go right and you'll be in the room that you can go either up or down. This time, go up and into the other room. In this room, simply bounce across to the other side of the room and go up to the following room. In the next room, you'll see four eyeball statues like before, and you have to make them all blue again! To make them all blue this time, hit the bottom right statue once, then hit the top-left one twice to turn it blue, making a Key appear. Take the Key and enter the next room to the right. Defeat the three color creatures that come out of the ground to open the door, then enter the room at the top of the screen to meet one of the mini-bosses! The "Big Gel" mini-boss is similar to the first form of the Nightmare bosses; the sword doesn't affect it. Instead, get close to it and use Magic Powder on it to hurt it. Repeat this process until it's defeated, then head left. Go down a small bit and walk up to the three movable blocks in your way. Push the top and bottom ones forward, and then push the middle one downward to clear the way. Go up to the chest and open it to get the Nightmare Key, then exit the room. Backtrack quite a few rooms towards the dungeon's entrance until you're in the room with the colored tiles and a locked door at the top of the screen. Bounce up to the door and open it with the Key, then go through it to the room behind it to reach the second mini-boss! This rock creature will jump in the air and make boulders fall down after you, so use Roc's Feather to avoid getting stopped when it hits the ground! Try and get close to it, then strike it with your sword. Repeat the process until he's defeated, then take the Fairy that appears to recover your health, then enter the next room to the left. Defeat the two bouncing winged enemies in this room then make your way across the bouncing tiles to the upper-left corner of the room where you'll find a pot. Lift up the pot and stand on the switch beneath it to open the doors, then go through the door at the top of the screen. In this room, defeat all the Gels that come out of the floor when you walk by to make a chest appear. Open it to get the Map, then enter the room to the right. In the next room, there are four of those colored shell enemies that you have to put into their own holes! Do like you did before in the room with only two of them until they're all in their own holes. After they're where they all belong, a Key will appear. Take the Key and backtrack a couple rooms back to the one with the switch under the pot. This time, enter the door to the left. You'll see nine of those eyeball statues that all have to be turned blue! The quickest way to make them all blue is to hit them in this order. First, hit the center statue, and then hit the one directly to the right of it. Then, hit the left one in the middle row, then the middle statue in the top row. Next, hit the middle one in the bottom row, and then hit the center one again. They should all become blue and the door will open; go through the door at the top of the screen. In the next room, just go through the left door to the following room. Walk along the bottom wall and hit the crystal at the end of the path to lower the blocks near the top of the room. Then, go around and open the door with the Nightmare Key, then enter the room and get ready for the real boss! Read the Bosses section of this guide for information on beating it (it's listed right after the 6 Shadows). After you beat it, go right to the next room and talk to the Fairy. She'll give you the power of color, which is either the Red or Blue Mail. The Red Mail makes it so that whenever you attack, it hits as if you have collected a Piece of Power, and the Blue Mail protects you from attacks as if you've collected a Guardian Acorn. Pick whichever you want, and the Fairy will escort you back outside. You can always go through the dungeon again and talk to the Fairy to change your color if you want! ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 8. Weapons/Items -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ======================== Selectable Items/Weapons ======================== Bomb: You can use this item to blow open holes in hollow walls or defeat many enemies. They are very common because you can buy them at the Shop in Mabe Village after you purchase the Shovel and enemies sometimes drop them when defeated. Boomerang: This has to be one of the strongest weapons in the game because of its power! You can only get it after you have the Magnifying Glass. You have to blow open a wall at Toronbo Shores and trade the item in your B button for it. (The Shovel should be the item that you trade for the Boomerang.) Bow and Arrow: This is a very useful weapon in the later stages of the game. Unfortunately, it costs 980 rupees in the Mabe Village shop, so you'll have to save up for this item and buy it before entering the Catfish's Maw. You can also find/buy Arrows for the Bow in the shop as well. Hookshot: This is another quite useful item/weapon, especially in the second half of the game! You find it in the Catfish's Maw dungeon. This item is helpful because you can shoot it at an object (pottery, rocks, chests, etc.) and pull yourself to it! You can also attack enemies by hitting them with it. Magic Powder: This special powder does quite mysterious things when used during the game. You can sprinkle it into a darkened lantern to light it up or sprinkle it on certain enemies to make them transform! You can either get this for free by finding the Sleepy Mushroom in the forest and bringing it to the witch in the Witch's Hut, or by buying it in the Mabe Village shop. Magic Rod: The Magic Rod is definitely one of the most powerful items in the game. Too bad you get it in the last dungeon (Turtle Rock)! You can use it to burn the ice blocks throughout Turtle Rock or to scorch enemies with! You can also light distant lanterns with this item/weapon. Ocarina: This item has some important uses in the game. You find it in the Dream Shrine after obtaining the Pegasus Boots. You can learn 3 different songs to play on the Ocarina, each with different purposes. I'll get into more detail about what each song does, as they're used throughout the game. Pegasus Boots: This is another quite useful item! You find it in the Key Cavern and they allow you to run really fast! You also can use these boots with the Sword to do a "hit-and-run" attack! They have other uses, too, but you'll find them out soon enough. Power Bracelet: When you equip this item, you can lift up many things you couldn't before! There are 2 different levels of this item: level 1 is found in Bottle Grotto, and the level 2 one is found in the Face Shrine dungeon. This item is definitely essential to getting through the game! Roc's Feather: This really useful item, found in the Tail Cave, enables you to jump in the air! You can use it to jump over small pits and to reach the Winged Items floating in the air. This is probably one of the most useful items you'll have in this game! Shield: The Shield is your only protection against most enemy blows. You get it in the beginning of the game from Tarin, Marin's father. There are 2 different shields: one is the normal one, and the other is the Mirror Shield, found in the Eagle's Tower, which can deflect much more than the regular shield can! Shovel: This is useful for finding secrets during the first half of the game, but becomes useless near the end. It can be bought from the Mabe Village shop for 200 rupees, and it can be used only to dig up hidden items in the ground. Sleepy Mushroom: This mushroom, which grows in the Mysterious Forest, can be used to make Magic Powder. It has no real use except for making Magic Powder, so I have nothing else to say about this item. Sword: This is your primary weapon, which you should always have equipped! You find it washed up on Toronbo Shores and is your only means of attack in the early parts of the game! There are 2 different levels of strength of the sword: level 1 is the sword you find at Toronbo Shores, and you get the level 2 sword in the Seashell Mansion after collection 20 Secret Seashells! ================================ Inventory (Non-selectable) Items ================================ Flippers: These flippers are essential to getting through the watery sections of the game. You find them in the Angler's Cavern. To swim with them, hold the Control Pad in the direction you want to go. Press A to swim faster and press B to dive underwater for a short period of time. Golden Leaves: These golden leaves are located in Kanalet Castle and Richard, the former prince of this castle, asks that you retrieve these leaves for him. You have to find the leaves in the castle, then bring them back to Richard and he'll open up a secret passage leading to an item you need to continue through the game. Secret Medicine: This special medicine is a useful item, especially in really tough parts where you usually die. It refills all your hearts when you lose them all! You can only buy this medicine from Crazy Tracy in her house north of the Witch's Hut. The price for this item is cheap though. Secret Seashells: These seashells are hidden throughout the island. There are a total of 26 shells throughout the game, but you'll only need to collect 20 of them. When you get 20, go to the Seashell Mansion to get your level 2 Sword! ============= Dungeon Items ============= Compass: This item shows you the locations of all unopened chests in the dungeon you're in. It also makes a sound when you're in a room with a Key hidden inside. Map: The Map allows you to see all the rooms of that dungeon on the sub-menu. Darker colored boxes are rooms you haven't yet entered and lighter colored boxes are rooms you've been in. Nightmare Key: This key allows you to open the door leading to the boss of that dungeon. Small Keys won't open the Nightmare door, so you must have this key to open it! Small Key: You use these keys in the dungeons to unlock locked doors and blocks with keyholes on them. You get these keys by doing certain things in some rooms or find them in chests. Stone Beak/Owl Statue: The Stone Beak allows you to hear a secret from the Owl Statues in that dungeon. You can find the beak in a treasure chest in each dungeon and there are a couple statues throughout the dungeon, too. =========== Other Items =========== Acorn of Defense: When you get this acorn, your defense power increases for a period of time. You can keep its strength longer if enemies don't hit you that much. If you do get hit a lot; its power will wear off quicker! Heart: These small hearts recover 1 of your hearts. Enemies usually drop them when you defeat them, so they're not hard to find! Heart Containers/Pieces: You can get the Heart Containers, which adds a heart to your maximum, by defeating the boss of each dungeon. The Heart Pieces are a bit more difficult to find, though. You can find them in many places throughout the game, and when you collect 4 of them, your maximum heart capacity increases by one. Read the Heart Piece section of this guide to find out where the Heart Pieces are located. Piece of Power: This flashing triangle, sometimes dropped by enemies, doubles the strength of attacks with your sword. They run out after a period of time just like the Acorn of Defense. Rupee: The currency of Koholint Island and all of the other Zelda games. You find them after defeating enemies, in chests, and in many other places. You use them to buy items at the shop or for other purposes. ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 9. Since it's so large and it won't budge for almost anything, use the Pegasus Boots and ram it. It'll cause it to drop down, allowing you access! Podoboo Effective Weapons/Items: N/A Description: This fireball from the Mario games jumps out of lava areas. They're very easy to avoid, though. Just wait until it's going back down into the lava, then pass that section before it pops back up again! Spiked Thwomp Effective Weapons/Items: N/A Description: This is a large, spiked Thwomp. However, its top is flat and safe to stand on. When you pass under it, it'll come crashing down! To get past, use your Pegasus Boots to run under it. Stone Elevator Effective Weapons/Items: N/A Description: In the Bottle Grotto dungeon, there's a stone elevator that just won't budge when you stand on it. The only way to get it to move is to pick up a nearby pot, then stand on it again; it'll weigh down the elevator! Thwomp Effective Weapons/Items: N/A Description: This is a normal-sized Thwomp. Like the spiked version, it'll come crashing down on you if pass under it. To get past, use the Pegasus Boots to dart right past them! ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 10. Mini-Bosses -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ====== Legend ====== S = Sword M = Magic Powder H = Hookshot R = Magic Rod P = Power Bracelet B = Bomb A = Arrows Armos Knight Effective Weapons/Items: S, R, A Description: This giant Armos Knight is found in the southern shrine and it guards the Face Key. Pummel this knight with lots of arrows while jumping in the air with the Roc's Feather when it stomps the ground so you don't get stunned until it's defeated. Blaino Effective Weapons/Items: S Description: This boxing glove wearing enemy, found in Turtle Rock, is really annoying to fight, especially when it lands a punch on you! If it hits you with an uppercut, you'll be sent to the entrance of the dungeon! Wait until it winds up for a punch, then run behind it and attack with your sword. Cue Ball Effective Weapons/Items: S Description: This weird creature, usually found in watery areas, moves around the perimeter of the room quickly. It does have a large backside, which is its weakness. When it's about to turn a corner and run towards you, hit its backside, then when it heads back in the direction it came hit it again! Keep doing that until it's defeated. Desert Lanmola Effective Weapons/Items: S, H, R, B, A Description: This slick worm-like creature inhabits the sand whirlpool area of Yarna Desert. It jumps in and out of the sand, but it doesn't attack! When it pops out, hit its head with your sword. Continue that until it gives up the Angler Key. Dodongo Snake Effective Weapons/Items: B Description: These thick-skinned, black snakes are similar to the Dodongo dinosaurs from the original Zelda. These snakes eat bombs, but the bombs also hurt them! Defeat these snakes by getting in front of them and putting a bomb there so they eat it and get hurt. Feed them a total of 3 bombs each to kill them. Gohma Effective Weapons/Items: H, R, A Description: These oversized, one-eyed spiders are back in this game as well! When they open their eyes, they'll shoot a ball at you. Beat them by shooting them in the eyes when they're open. One way to make their eyes open quickly is to play the song Marin taught you on the Ocarina. Grim Creeper Effective Weapons/Items: N/A Description: This flute-playing enemy in the upper floor of Eagle's Tower doesn't attack itself, but it calls 6 Big Keese to appear. To win against this mini-boss, you must defeat all 6 Big Keese before any of them fly off the screen. If any of them get away, you have to try again. After you beat the bats, the Grim Creeper will disappear. Hinox Effective Weapons/Items: S, H, R, B, A Description: This giant Cyclops enemy is a pain because it can grab you and throw you, thus stunning you when you land. Get in front of it and attack it with your sword, or hit it from far away with another long-range weapon until it's defeated. King Moblin Effective Weapons/Items: S Description: This large Moblin living in a cave east of the Goponga Swamp is definitely the king of Moblins just by its size! It shoots arrows at you, then dashes straight towards you. Move out of the way and let it crash into the wall, then hit it with your sword while it's dazed. Repeat that process until it's defeated. Knight Effective Weapons/Items: S, H, R, B, A Description: This mace-wielding knight, found in Kanalet Castle, holds the last Golden Leaf. To beat it, run in and hit it with your sword, then back up quickly to avoid getting hit by the spiked mace! Keep doing the "hit-and-run" attack pattern until it's defeated and you get the last leaf! Master Stalfos Effective Weapons/Items: S, B Description: This giant skeleton is found in the Catfish's Maw and appears in 4 different rooms in which you must fight it. Each time you encounter it, attack it by using the sword to make it collapse, then plant a bomb on it to cause damage to it. After a few hits, it'll disappear into the next room you must meet it in. After you beat it the 4th and final time, you'll win the Hookshot! Rolling Bones Effective Weapons/Items: S, H, R, B, A Description: This frog-like enemy pushes a spiked log back and forth across the room. To defeat it, attack it quickly with your sword or another strong weapon and jump over the log when it's rolled. Keep hitting it until it's defeated. Smasher Effective Weapons/Items: P Description: This weird black creature attacks by throwing a black orb at you. Defeat this enemy by picking up the orb with the Power Bracelet, and then throw it right at Smasher to hurt it. Keep doing that a few more times until it's defeated. Turtle Rock Effective Weapons/Items: S Description: This giant stone head blocking entrance to the Turtle Rock dungeon is seemingly lifeless. To make it come alive, play the song Mamu the frog taught you on the Ocarina and it'll come to life! When the head comes out and moves around just keep hitting it with your sword until it's destroyed. ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 11. Bosses -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ====== Legend ====== S = Sword M = Magic Powder H = Hookshot R = Magic Rod P = Power Bracelet B = Bomb A = Arrows Moldorm Found: Tail Cave Effective Weapons/Items: S Strategy: The giant Moldorm is the boss of the Tail Cave. It's only weakness is the tip of its tail. Get behind it, and then hit its tail; that'll cause it to get an extra boost of speed for a moment. After it slows down again, hit its tail again. Keep attacking its tail until you win. Genie Found: Bottle Grotto Effective Weapons/Items: S, P, B Strategy: This genie is the boss of the Bottle Grotto. It hides inside of its protective bottle so it can't be hurt, but there's a way to hurt it while it's inside. When the bottle bounces towards you, hit it with your sword, then pick it up and throw it at the wall with the Power Bracelet. That'll make the genie come out and throw fireballs at you. After he retreats to his bottle, pick up and throw the bottle at the wall again. Do that 3 times total to make the bottle break and the genie will have to fight you! Hit the Genie with your sword, then it'll spin around and then shoot a fireball at you. Then, hit it again. Keep doing that until it's defeated. Slime Eye Found: Key Cavern Effective Weapons/Items: S Strategy: When you enter this boss's room, you won't see it. After it taunts you, ram the wall with the Pegasus Boots to make the boss of the Key Cavern fall to the ground. When it does, repeatedly hit it with your sword until you see it splitting into 2 and there's just a small thread holding them together. Then, ram that spot with the Pegasus Boots and the sword and it'll split into 2 enemies! To beat them, hit them with your sword and use Roc's Feather to jump in the air when they come crashing to the ground after you hit them. Keep doing that until they're both defeated. Angler Fish Found: Angler's Tunnel Effective Weapons/Items: S, B, A Strategy: This giant fish is the boss of the Angler's Tunnel. Its weakness is a glowing tentacle above its head. To beat this fish, hit the tentacle repeatedly with your sword while the fish moves up and down. If you're not quick enough, the Angler will dash towards you to attack. Then, continue hitting the tentacle until it's defeated. Slime Eel Found: Catfish's Maw Effective Weapons/Items: S, H Strategy: When you enter this boss's chamber inside the Catfish's Maw, a giant pit opens up in the middle of the room. Its tail pops out and rotates around in a circle, then 4 holes in the walls appear. To beat this creature, wait until you see the eel's head pop out of one of the 4 holes, then when it opens its mouth, shoot the Hookshot into it while trying to avoid the spiked tail. After you pull the eel out of the hole, hit the flashing heart behind its head a few times with your sword. Watch out because there is also a fake eel and if you pull it out, it'll explode! Keep pulling out and attacking the real eel until it's defeated. Façade Found: Face Shrine Effective Weapons/Items: B Strategy: This giant face in the floor is the boss of the Face Shrine dungeon. When you first enter this room, it'll make Flying Tiles come out of the ground and fly after you, then it'll make the 4 pots fly towards you. After you evade all those flying objects, plant a bomb on the face of Façade. After it explodes, Façade will disappear, then reappear again. Repeat the last step around 3 or 4 more times to defeat it. Evil Eagle Found: Eagle's Tower Effective Weapons/Items: S, H, B, A Strategy: This giant eagle that flies around atop the Eagle's Tower is the boss of Level 7. After it first takes off and it flies onscreen again, hit its beak with the Hookshot as it flies by. When it flies by 2 more times, hit it both times. Then, it'll stop and start to shoot feathers and make strong wind gusts come towards you. Use the Mirror Shield to keep the wind gusts from blowing you off the tower as easily and to block the feathers shot at you. Then, hit it again with the Hookshot when it flies by overhead. Continue to hit its beak with the Hookshot until it's defeated. Hot Head Found: Turtle Rock Effective Weapons/Items: R Strategy: This fiery boss is the guardian of the Thunder Drum deep inside the Turtle Rock dungeon. It jumps in and out of the lava and surprisingly doesn't actually attack you! The only weapon that can cause harm to it is the Magic Rod, even though it shoots fire! When Hot Head comes out of the lava, shoot it as many times as you can with the Magic Rod. Make sure to ambush it with lots of hits when it is above the lava because when it dives back in, it recovers and you'll have to start over. Continue to use the Magic Rod until you eventually put out its flames and beat it! The 6 Nightmare Shadows Found: Wind Fish's Egg Effective Weapons/Items: Varies Strategy: The 6 Shadows deep inside the Wind Fish's Egg are the final bosses of the game. There are obviously 6 of them, and I'll provide separate strategies on beating each one below: Giant Gel Effective Weapons/Items: M Strategy: This Giant Gel is the first of the 6 Shadows, but not the absolute easiest (Lanmola's Shadow is!). When it appears, it'll make a small hop forward. Go up to it and sprinkle Magic Powder on it to hurt it. Then, back up and it'll take another small hop. Sprinkle more Magic Powder on it to cause damage. Do this one more time to beat the Giant Gel and the shadow will become Agahnim's Shadow! Agahnim's Shadow Effective Weapons/Items: S Strategy: The shadow of Agahnim attacks just the same as the real one from Zelda 3 (A Link to the Past). When he casts a spell and a flashing ball comes towards you, hit it with your sword back towards Agahnim to hurt him. When he moves to another area of the room, do the same thing. Watch out, though, because if he casts a spell and a bunch of small shots together come towards you, they'll hurt you even though you hit them with your sword! Keep hitting the flashing balls at him a few more times until he's defeated. Shadow of Moldorm Effective Weapons/Items: S Strategy: This shadow is exactly like the original Moldorm boss you fought back in the Tail Cave! Defeat this one the same way as the original: hit its tail and watch out when it moves quickly after you hit it. Keep hitting it a bunch of times until you defeat it. Ganon's Shadow Effective Weapons/Items: S Strategy: The shadow of Ganon from A Link to the Past is back as one of the final nightmares. To beat this reincarnation, use the Pegasus Boots to dash into Ganon and stab it with your sword. Keep ramming it while watching out when he calls a bunch of bats to attack until you beat him! Shadow of Lanmola Effective Weapons/Items: R Strategy: This just HAS to be the easiest of the shadows! When it appears, just hit it once with your Magic Rod to defeat it! Dethl Effective Weapons/Items: A Strategy: This is the last and hardest of the 6 Shadows. It has 2 long tentacles that circle around its center area. Jump over the tentacles while trying to stay in front of Dethl's middle area and wait until it opens its eye. Then, shoot a bunch of arrows at its eye while avoiding the tentacles until the eye closes. When it opens again, shoot more arrows into it. After you've successfully shot about 20 arrows into its eye, Dethl will be defeated and you win the game! Another quicker way to defeat Dethl is possible only if you have the Boomerang. When it opens its eye, throw the Boomerang right into it for an instant defeat! Giant Hardhat Beetle (Boss of Color Dungeon) Found: Color Dungeon Effective Weapons/Items: S Strategy: This giant version of the Hardhat Beetle isn't too tough for the boss of the new Color Dungeon. When you start the fight, its helmet is blue and each time you hit it with your sword, it'll change colors. Keep hitting it with your sword until it turns red, and then hit it again to beat it! Watch out when it attacks, and be quick when you attack or it'll change back to the blue color again. ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 12. Secrets/Tips and Tricks -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ================== Glitch in Zelda DX ================== I've found a bug in Zelda DX, which occurs whenever you get a Guardian Acorn or a Piece of Power. When you get them and just before the text appears, press Start. Press it again to return to the game, totally skipping the text! ============= Item Upgrades ============= In this game, you are only allowed to carry a certain amount of Magic Powder, Bombs, and Arrows at once. You can raise your maximum capacity by visiting the Mad Batter, which is hidden in 3 areas throughout the island. When you enter its lair, just sprinkle Magic Powder into the lantern and it'll appear. Here, I'll tell where each one is located: 1. In the Mysterious Forest, go one screen north from the cave in the forest. There, use the Power Bracelet to lift up the stone and go down the steps to visit the Mad Batter's lair. 2. This location is in the vicinity of the Catfish's Maw, so I'll tell you how to get there from that dungeon. From there, swim left a screen and climb up the ladder. Then, head south 2 screens and right one. Here, use Roc's Feather to jump over the pit and cut down a bush you'll fall down a hole doing this, but don't worry about it unless you don't have much health). The, use the Pegasus Boots combined with the feather to jump over the pit to that space you cut down, then chop down more bushes and go down the steps. Get through the watery cave using your Flippers, then when you emerge, go left a screen and down the steps into the Mad Batter's lair. 3. This last location is located in the Western Tal Tal Mountains area. Follow the path up and around until you pass the area where boulders fall from the mountains. Then, when you're in the scene with a treasure chest and a stone nearby, lift up that stone and go down the steps to reach the Mad Batter's lair. ================== Making Bomb Arrows ================== When you have the Bombs and Arrows in your inventory, assign the Bombs to one button and the Bow and Arrows to the other. Then, press both buttons simultaneously and you'll shoot an arrow with a bomb on it! It'll explode on impact with anything! ================== Money Saving Trick ================== To save LOTS of your rupees when you go and buy some of the expensive items like the Shovel or Bow, you must follow the following steps. You also have to have at least the amount of rupees that item is though. First, take the item from the shelf and go to pay for it. After you buy it and the rupees start deducting, QUICKLY press A, B, Start, and Select simultaneously to get a chance to save and quit. Do that, then when you come back to the game, you'll have the item and most of the rupees! ======================= Obtaining the Boomerang ======================= In order to get the Boomerang, you must first have the Magnifying Glass from the trading sequence, and the Shovel. From where you find the Sword in the beginning of the game on Toronbo Shores, go left one screen. Bomb the wall and go into the cave. Assign the Shovel to the B button, and then talk to the Goriya. He'll trade you the Boomerang for what's on the B button, which should be the Shovel. You can always trade the Boomerang back the same way that you obtained it, too! ====================== Stealing from the Shop ====================== If you want a really expensive item, but don't want to pay for it, you can steal it from the shop. The one problem to stealing is if you ever re-enter the shop, the shopkeeper will automatically kill you! Also, everyone in the game will call you THIEF for the rest of the game. To steal, take the item you want, then run all the way around the right side of the shopkeeper, and then quickly exit the shop with the item. You should make it while the shopkeeper is still looking the other way. I advise that you only do this trick when you're getting the Bow because you should already have bough Bombs and the Shovel earlier in the game and you won't need anything important from the shop after the Bow. =================== Wind Fish Egg Paths =================== Inside the Wind Fish's Egg, you'll find a room with 4 different paths to choose from. It's pretty much like a "Lost Woods" (Zelda 1 for NES) if you don't know where to go. Below, I'll list 4 different paths that you could take to get past this part of the egg. Remember that only ONE of these paths will work for your game file, so try each path until one works for you! (Note: These are paths that I found to work, so if none of them work for you, go to the Library and read the book in the lower-right corner. You'll need the Magnifying Lens to do that, though.) Path 1: Left, Left, Up, Right, Right, Up, Left, Up Path 2: Left, Up, Right, Up, Left, Up, Right, Up Path 3: Right, Up, Up, Right, Up, Up, Right, Up Path 4: Left, Left, Left, Left, Up, Up, Up, Up ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 17.
