INTRODUCTION G0100 =============================================================================== Welcome to 'The Tower of Druaga' for the NES, an action RPG released by Namco in 1985. It is similar, but not identical to the Arcade version. There were also few of remakes on the PC Engine (TurboGrafx-16), PlayStation, GameBoy and so on as well as several sequels/prequels that are not so similar. BASICS G0200 =============================================================================== As you can tell from the introduction, your objective is to recover the blue crystal rod, rescue Ki and kill Druaga. The aim of the game is to find the exit on each floor to make it to the top of the tower. On the way you will find several items to help defeat monsters and make this task easier. Sometimes you are required to pick up treasure in order to finish the game or defeat a monster to progress. If you missed it earlier, you are stuck and need to restart from the beginning. Beware that the game is tough and very ruthless. Basics: ``````` All floors are random in that the enemies, exit, starting position and items appear at different places, including the key. The layout is always the same, however, so make use of the maps but don't forget to smash walls with your power-ups. Not all treasure chests are good, thus check what you are getting before making it appear to save you time, lives and running around. The treasure chest will appear at your starting position, you may have picked up the item while you were starting the level and haven't moved yet. Controls: ````````` Use the A or B button to use an item. As standard you will swing your sword. Keep the button pressed to walk with a drawn sword and kill enemies as you walk into them, that otherwise will kill you instantly. Not all enemies can be killed with the standard equipment. Gilgamesh automatically blocks with his shield from the direction he is facing. When using the sword you cannot block with your shield at the same time. With your sword drawn you still block the side on your left, however. After picking up the axe you can stand in front of an inner wall and press A or B to hack through it. Check the items section for a closer description of how and how not to use the axes. Just be aware that the first two have limited usage and if used once too often, will disappear from your inventory. This is very bad, and will almost certainly mean you cannot finish the game. You start the game with 2 lives. Getting touched by a foe kills you and you have to restart the floor all over. If you die after picking up a treasure box you will still have the item after restarting the floor. Time & Score: `````````````` Each floor gives you a certain time to finish it. The countdown will not kill you straight away, but once the points have reached zero a red counter will tell you there are 60 seconds left until you do die. There are also will-o- wisps appearing around the 50 second mark to patrol the area. Until later on in the game you have no chance to defend yourself from them apart of running way. Apart of the time bonus there are also points given for slaying enemies. Your total score is displayed at the start of each floor, as well as the current high score. Blocking a zap three times will show the treasure containing an item that is required for another power up later on in the game. I suggest you try and get this. To block, just stand still and face the direction of where the zap is coming from. It's easier said than done though. You should also get an extra armor now, possibly for the potion you picked up earlier. Just wait if they are in the way. Just don't move and no more will spawn in the meantime. For the treasure chest to appear you will now have to kill every single enemy. Fortunately it's mainly some slimes and a couple of wizards. So how to kill the wizards? They only appear when you move around. Try to stay in an area with many broken down walls. You can catch the wizards when they are still flashing, so quickly go around with your sword drawn and stick in their back or side. The shield itself is not useful at this point, but you need it to obtain the real one later. Take him out if he causes too much trouble because you don't want to be bothered when there are five mages blazing from all angles. While you look for the key, touch both the left and right side of the maze for the treasure chest. You finally have a candle to see the ghosts for the rest of the game. Oh and there is a mean dragon on this level as well, who can torch down a pretty long lines with his breath. To get up to the last floor, first kill the two wizards that can mirror themselves twice. They will stop coming back then. Until then, stay away from the Hyper Knight who you need to kill next. After the Mirror Knight is dead, another wizard will show up that can mirror himself to appear as four. Each illusion zaps you, often from every side. Only one of them is the real wizard, and with the Hyper Sword in hand you can slay him. As mentioned previously, to maneuver around them easier, hack down a small patch of walls for a big field. The Druaga is quite tough to beat, because if you have been zapped (absorbed by the armor), your physical attack will drop down a lot. If you took down the previous enemies quickly you should have enough defense left to take him down in a similar fashion. Finally, if haven't done so already, take the key and the last floor awaits. To complete the last floor, walk into Ishtar (who will disappear), then look down at point A. It is 7 steps into the 2nd lowest corridor. You will know if you have done it correctly when a small tower with a lit ball will appear on the left of Gilgamesh. Do the same on the 2nd row from the top, it's obviously easier to know which column at this point. Finally, enter the middle row and go left all the way. The stone will turn into Ki, so run into her and return towards the middle of the map. Look down in this row, at the same point as the other two corridors. CONGRATULATIONS !! NOW YOU SAVED KI AND THE ADVENTURE IS OVER or is it...? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ANOTHER DRUAGA G0310 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ After you finish the game and the credits have rolled, you will be presented with a special present. Using the following code at the title screen (soft reset) will turn the DRUAGA sign green instead of red. U, U, U, U, U, U, L, L, L, L, R, R, R The game restarts at Floor 1, but the puzzles are different. For the level layouts please check the original mode's maps above. Floor 1: ````````` Draw your sword and wait for a green slime to run into you. If you did it correctly the treasure chest will already appear. Use the pickaxe wisely, check the treasure section for more details. Floor 2: ````````` Find a black slime and kill it from above. The boots will appear and the movements seem much smoother once again. Miss out and you have to play the rest of the game in slow mode, which is most likely not good enough for you to beat it. Floor 3: ````````` Avoid the blue knights at all cost, you should do that anyway seeing that you are so weak, and kill all the green slimes. The chest pops up, and now you may pass the blue knights but it's not like you want to take them on. Floor 4: ````````` Swing the sword towards the exit door, either on the same horizontal or vertical line. Floor 5: ````````` This is not too easy to pull off. You need to block 5 consecutive zaps without moving even a tiny pixel, in other words stand somewhere, face a direction and just block. There are two problems that come with this puzzle. One is that those magicians stop appearing unless you stand in the dead center of the spot. Second is that you might not face the direction and a mage will zap your behind while you stand around. The latter can be helped by standing a corridor with only one opening, which you should face. Thus nobody will creep up behind you at all. It is still quite hard to do, so to save you some frustration here is what I did several times and it worked well. Stand in the bottom right corner, but one space to the left of it. There is very little risk of a mage popping up on the right of you, so face left and find the exact spot in the center. It may take some tweaking but you might soon find those guys keep coming up when you are not moving around. If not, maneuver left and right a little bit until the pixels match just right. It is not easy to spot with your eyes. After five zaps it is time to pull your sword out and start a revenge act although that is not necessary to finish the level. Floor 6: ````````` Make a sorcerer set fire to the exit door. Easiest way is to stand one spot away from the door in any direction and wait for them to do it. Usually they do not shoot at you if you use the flames but you still want to face them to block. Not too hard. Floor 7: ````````` Wait for the timer to start the red countdown and then use up the pickaxe. Don't worry, you get a new and improved one straight away just like before. You may also use the axe once prior to the timer becoming red, but do not use it up until it starts. It isn't too easy to outrun these knights, but you may also battle one or two if they become too irritating. Floor 8: ````````` Easy: simply swing the sword once you have collected the key. Floor 9: ````````` As usual you don't want the sap drink, but for curiosity the chest appears after you have crossed the ghost. Well, don't, and just head for the exit with the key in hand. Floor 10: ````````` Try to avoid the knights. Find a red slime and keep a few spots away. Draw your sword and then run into a wall so your guarded side is facing the slime. Hopefully it will zap at you while you look silly running into the wall, but the chest will appear and you will the last laugh. If you are having trouble getting the slime to zap you, find another spot but also don't destroy your pickaxe while drawing. Keep the button pressed all the time to avoid this. Floor 11: ````````` This one is a challenge, as you first need to avoid all enemies until the red countdown starts, then kill all five mages while the will-o-wisps patrol the area. First find a safe corner to hide out in and just wait. The mages won't re-appear until you move again. As soon as the timer starts, go hunting and hope they show up at good places. You may want to do this near your starting position so you can grab the treasure quickly. Regarding the key, you can pick that up before the timer is too low, just don't kill any of the mages while doing so. Floor 12: ````````` Kill the enemies in this order: both Slimes, both Druids and then the Ghost. The tricky part is making the Ghost not follow you all the time, or killing it by accident. Floor 13: ````````` Step on the door, then grab the key and open the key. Do not go through yet as the chest just appeared where you started off, and you need that item for later. Floor 14: ````````` This level requires you to run down the timer to the red countdown once again. In the meanwhile you can collect the key and kill everyone but the ghost. Why keep the ghost? Because once the countdown starts you want to step into his way and block 7 of his zaps to make the chest appear. Floor 15: ````````` With the dragon potion you can kill the dragon instantly. This also reveals the treasure. Floor 16: ````````` Kill the Mirror Knight first, this means avoiding the mages until then. Once he is dead you can take those out, or just run for the exit. Floor 17: ````````` Draw your sword and run into the outer wall. The treasure chest pops up - you grab it - and make for the exit as usual. Floor 18: ````````` Avoid the ghost, if you touch him then it's bye-bye chest. Avoid him until you manage to open the door, then grab the sword and leave, killing whatever you like in the process. Floor 19: ````````` The dragon needs to breath fire for at least six spaces long. This mean you either have to lure him to an open spot, or hack through some walls to make it easier for him to do so. Floor 20: ````````` This floor is pretty tough if you want the treasure and it's of course a great benefit to have the power potion. Here's the solution of making it pop up: "You have to kill everyone, and the last thing you kill has to be somewhere on the middle row. The game can be kind of finicky when it comes to how strong Gil is, but if you've gotten all of the items so far, you should be able to succeed. You might have to kill yourself and try again to reset Gil's health to maximum." [Thanks to Pluvius for this great tip. Worked for me.] Floor 21: ````````` First you may want to kill the ghost that's around, then find the key but make sure one of the Mirror Knights is around because you need to kill one within ~5 seconds after collecting it or it's no treasure for you pal. They will most likely zone in one you instead so don't worry too much and after the last level you should be toughened up, mentally at least. Floor 22: ````````` This is the first different treasure than on normal mode, because there is none. And if it were here then only a sap drink so don't look so be happy the level is quickly over. Floor 23: ````````` You need to start by killing a Blue Slime, then a Wizard, another Slime and so on. When the last slime is dead the chest will appear unless you screwed up the order. Slime, Wizard, Slime, Wizard, Slime, Wizard, Slime. Floor 24: ````````` Walk through a blue will-o-wisp from the bottom, i.e. a row below you going up. They follow a certain path so you can think ahead where they will go next. Floor 25: ````````` Again, no treasure. Floor 26: ````````` Tough, you need to dodge the druids and not block their zaps until you manage to open the exit door. Get your personal revenge afterwards as you run back for the package. Floor 27: ````````` Uh-oh, break your axe in exchange for a necklace. You get a new pickaxe on floor 29 but that means you have to do without for the next level. Floor 28: ````````` Due to the fact that you are without an axe in the floor, you may want to keep the ghost alive so he destroy walls for you. It's risky of course, but it's also risky to have to walk through all these ropers. Speaking of ropers, you need to stay in contact with one for around 3-5 seconds for the treasure chest, sounds weird but you can survive it. Just walk on top of one. Floor 29: ````````` A simply task is at hand. Draw your sword and press the START button on your controller. You immediately have the best pickaxe flashing in your inventory (unless you moved around for some reason) after unpausing the game. Great stuff, now hack your way towards the exit - the real one that is. Floor 30: ````````` So you have this great new axe, but for this floor you are not allowed to use it until the door is opened. Too bad as there are so many enemies around. The ropers are ok, the fire can be walked through by now and the dragon is slow anyway. That leaves the knights which you may be able to avoid if route to the key / door is lucky. Once all four are gone, stand at point A, draw your sword and keep holding it as you point the hero north. Be careful not to lose your shiny new axe here by accident. After ~10 seconds the chest will be up. If you can't see it in your screen then try holding is as long as feasible. The blue will-o-wisps won't harm you and the blue slime tend to be very slow. If they are close then simply kill them beforehand. Floor 32: ````````` You need to kill the dragon when it's facing down. It will stop when you are nearby so this shouldn't be too hard. Just make sure it's facing the right way or you have to go away a few blocks and wait for it move into the right position. Floor 33: ````````` Seek out the two red slimes and slay them before any other foe. This might be dodging the ghost and mage a lot. After the slimes you can kill them and collect the new shield. Floor 34: ````````` Grab the key and cross over a Mirror Knight. You may need to kill him or just run for the exit after you have the book. Floor 35: ````````` Would you have killed two wizards and then block a zap from the slime, a chest would come up. It's no good though, so ignore this last sentence and just fetch the key and leave. Floor 36: ````````` Find the Lizard, draw your sword and wait for it to cross over you. This should make the chest appear and only deal small amounts of damage. Floor 37: ````````` Kill a roper. They are quite tough so make sure you don't let them leech on your back and take long swoops in the corridors. After one is down, touch the ghost by either trying to kill it or just passing through. The chest will now appear with a new defense improvement. Floor 38: ````````` Block a spell from the side, i.e. with your sword drawn. This isn't too tricky but it might help if you get rid of some walls around you to move around more freely. Floor 39: ````````` Get rid of the annoying enemies in the vicinity, e. g. ghost, blue slimes and the sorts. Now watch out for one of the will-o-wisps as they can still harm you. When the coast is clear, run into the outer wall and don't let go for around 10 seconds. Floor 40: ````````` Once you kill any enemy the treasure chest will already appear. Seems to easy? Sure is, that's why the time-accelerating potion you get from it is better avoided. Finish the level without bothering about it. Floor 41: ````````` Should you have been unlucky or silly enough to grab the potion on the previous floor, here's the antidote: Stand on the exit door, block a zap and grab the chest. For anyone else this is a quick key-and-door-only level. Floor 42: ````````` Not sure if this treasure is optional, but you may want to get it anyway to be on the safe side. Avoid any contact with the red will-o-wisps and you should see it when you collect the key. Floor 43: ````````` If you wait around too long on the starting spot then you automatically pick up the treasure item, which is a sap potion. So don't make this mistake and get a move on. Floor 44: ````````` After a few levels of useless junk, you are back in the good treasure. And of course a nice tough challenge awaits you. First make it to the exit door without the key, then collect the key. All this without blocking a single spell of the large amounts of magicians. I'm quite sure you can still walk through the fire though. Floor 45: ````````` This one can be extremely tough depending on the starting positions. You need to collect the key for the treasure chest to appear, but it's not all that simple. Tap the directional buttons only, do not walk smoothly. You may draw your sword to defend against the knights but they are most likely going to kill you. Additionally, you are not allowed to break any walls. Now you may take the other treasure chest that was seen from the start, as previously it would have held a time accelerate but instead you get a great sword. And if you are wondering, once you picked up the key you can stop tapping Gil around. [thanks to Pluvius for explaining this in great detail.] Floor 46: ````````` Hopefully have a Dark Yellow Slime on the same screen as the Dragon. What you need to do is kill the Dragon while one of the Slime's fire is still burning on the floor. Time this right for a new necklace. There are more than one slime which helps a lot. You may also want to kill that ghost right away. Floor 47: ````````` I'm not sure you need this item here, as the chest it would unlock on the 49th floor is not available on 'Another Druaga'. You may want to get it anyway to make sure. Simply get touched by a red will-o-wisp around 7 or 8 times. Floor 48: ````````` To get the chest, destroy the walls in all four corners of the map. This means you will have a nice 4-block square in each corner. Floor 49: ````````` No treasure this time around, which is good because that army looks mighty tough. Floor 50: ````````` It doesn't matter where you start, but it's obviously easier if you have the key and door nearby. Collect the key and open the door before you come in contact with any enemy. Blocking a zap is ok though. Once you open the door the chest will appear as usual. Floor 51: ````````` Destroy exactly seven walls and press the SELECT button. Obviously you want to do that at the start of the level to quickly grab the chest. Floor 52: ````````` Easy enough, slay the silver dragon and grab the contents of the chest. Useless, so don't let your guard down. Floor 57: ````````` Do not collect the key until I tell you. First step on the door to make the stone into the faux Ishtar (Succubus). Then defeat it in a single stroke. Repeat this step two more times and the chest will finally appear. Now collect the key and leave. Also do not get zapped by any magician as it decreases your strength too. Kill the Wizard that can split into four images. You will know when the correct one is hit as the Dragon appears. Kill it in one hit and then prepare for Druaga himself. He'll throw lots of spells at you but should go down pretty quickly if you picked up all the necessary items so far. Now you may leave via the final exit door. You will know if you have done it correctly when a small tower with a lit ball will appear on the left of Gilgamesh. Do the same on the 2nd row from the top, it's obviously easier to know which column at this point. Finally, enter the middle row and go left all the way. The stone will turn into Ki, so run into her and return towards the middle of the map. Draw your sword once again and look down in this passage, at the same point as the other two corridors. CAST G0500 =============================================================================== SLIME: `````` Green: The most basic form of slime. Slow and hardly moves around. No real threat but one has to consider the lack of power-ups in the first few levels, so they aren't exactly push-overs with your slow weapon draw skills and missing boots. Black: Shows up early, perhaps slightly faster than the green ones. Red: Zap-eager slimes. Dark Green: I've seen this guy shoot through walls and sometimes destroy them, plus he likes to jump around a lot. Blue: They enjoy zapping around, and can destroy walls while at it. Dark Yellow: Actually more like light green. These guys like to lay down fires on the floor. By the time you see them you can most likely walk through fire, making them not much of a threat at all. KNIGHT: ``````` Blue: The easiest of knights to defeat and appears early on in the levels already. Black: Not much different to the blue knight, might be slightly stronger. Mirror: Called Mirror Knight because one side is black and the other one white. He powers through the level in hyper speed (thus the name), like he is on drugs or something. Let's say "adrenaline" to keep this guide PG-13. Hyper: The strongest knight and usually you don't want to take this guy on unless you have a very good reason to. Lizard Man: Brought back for Namco's Soul Calibur series, this guy is pretty weak in this game though. Red: Seems quite tough in defense but very slow movements. MAGICIAN: ````````` Mage: The earliest of magicians, can zap and teleport, the basic stuff. The easiest to avoid and kill. Sorcerer: Can both zap and lay down fires around you which will kill you until you get the protection treasure. Druid: They look silver/white, and their zaps destroy walls, literally. Powerful stuff, but also helpful in clearing paths even for you to reach them quicker for some slaying. Wizard: He wears brown and his spells go through walls so do not feel safe in a closed-off corner. GHOSTS: ``````` Mage: Lays down fire. Druid: Zaps and destroys walls. Wizard: Zaps plenty at you, but pretty easy to defeat. ROPER: `````` Green Hand: Comes fairly early in the game and quite easy to defeat. Red Hand: I suppose slightly harder to defeat. Blue Hand: Tough nut to crack. DRAGON: ``````` Quox: They like to breathe fire that consumes the entire row or column. They are easier to kill than knights in my opinion, with several treasure items making giving you the upper hand. Silver: see above Black: see above WILL-O-WISP: ```````````` Some levels feature them but they also start appearing when the timer reaches 50 seconds and start patrolling the area. Blue: Protect yourself with the blue ring. Red: Protect yourself with the red ring. MISC: ````` Succubus: Takes the image of Ishtar but don't be fooled. Dies quickly. Demon Druaga: Likes to seek you out while going through walls. He's the toughest and last enemy you will fight and it requires a lot of strength plus defense to survive in battle. Ishtar: The real one shows up towards the end of the game. Ki: Although popping up during the game, you are rescuing her so she has no hard feelings towards you. REVIEW GYY00 =============================================================================== The story is quite simple. Gilgamesh needs to rescue Ki from Druaga's tower. One starts on floor 1, and each floor has enemies plus one key that will open up the door to the next floor. Each floor also contains a treasure chest that will pop up when a certain criteria is met. This can range from a simple "kill three slimes" to sometimes really obscure. And there are many secrets and traps awaiting in...THE TOWER OF DRUAGA. Gameplay: 5/10 At first it looks quite bad, but over time you get better with power ups and getting used to it. If the game wouldn't be so brutal in the difficulty. The controls are quite bad an the enemies are overwhelming in evil attack forms. If you collect enough items, which you have to find out painstakingly cruel ways (i.e. die 1,000 times), the latter parts of the game actually become bearable. The problem is, that missing just one item might screw up the rest of the floors. Can you imagine getting through the later stages without the winged boots? It would be impossible. Then again, I assume it would be so impossible that one needs to restart and do it "properly". Each floor does have a chest, finding out is like a puzzle. Unfortunately with so little lives it is only possible to solve them by dying and replaying the early levels over and over again. Frustration alone will make many players give up on this at the early stages. Update: With the game boasting another 60 levels in 'Another Druaga', I've decided that the game has enough re-playability value to increase the score from a 4. Also this seems to stay in my head, something a lot of other lousy games out there do not. Seems a lot more 'classic' looking back at it now. Graphics: 6/10 Not too shabby, and for 1985 there isn't much to complain about. The items look good, the maze a little basic but this was even in the arcades and a game isn't defined by its graphics, right? Well some enemies might have been designed better than just give them extra colors (i.e. Dragon Quest syndrome) but even the dragon looks good for the 80s, and in 2D. Sound: 5/10 Repetitive, sorry to say. 60 floors of the same tune isn't fun. It's ok for that early in the games' evolutions but it could at least have a little diversity. Overall: 5/10 A classic, and no wonder it has been re-released over and over again, as well as spawned several sequels. Unfortunately it's nowhere near as good as one would think a 'classic' should be. If you get really into it then perhaps you will enjoy hacking through this, but it would be very hardcore. Hopefully by using a walkthrough it will ease the pain of finding treasure and improving Gilgamesh so he can make it up the tower and rescue his precious Ki.
