I've always loved button-bashing games and this is one of the best. So anyway, you are here because you want to find out more. This FAQ covers absolutely everything in this great game. (Or at least tries) INFORMATION: Track & Field (c) 1983 Konami This game was a huge success in the 80's Especially among real-life athletes Track & Field is also known as Hyper Olympic This game is 1-4 player ( 1-2 Players ) (simultaneously) Screen Resolution: 256 x 224 (H) 60.000000 Hz ============================================================ 3) BASICS + TIPS ============================================================ Main Controls -------------- Button 1 - Run Button 2 - Action (Jump or Throw) Button 3 - Run 1st, 2nd and 3rd+ Matches -------------------------- If you can complete the first 6 events, you get to do them again! (You move onto the next match) But then the qualifying times are harder! So the 1st time round is the easiest. The 2nd is harder. And the 3rd is the hardest. After the 3rd match, the game repeats itself and the scores needed are the same as the 3rd match. (Thanx to BFoddy and DTolley) Run Faster ----------- On the running events, instead of pressing Button 1 then Button 3 in turn (like you do on recent games), press just one of the buttons. You will go much faster if you keep pressing the same one. I have pointed this out because a lot of people still make this mistake. So decide to use either B1 or B3 then hammer it! Extra Lives ------------ If you can get your score to a whopping 100000 points, you will get an extra life! If you have an extra life and you fail an event you will just continue to the next event but will lose your life. You get another extra life at 200000 points, 300000 points, etc. (The lives are displayed to the right of your overall score) ============================================================ 4) EVENTS ============================================================ This Section covers all 6 events. It shows qualifying times/scores and tips on how to win! ------------------- 4a) 100 METER DASH ------------------- Controls: Button 1 - Run Button 2 - Nothing Button 3 - Run Qualifying Times: 1ST MATCH - 16 Seconds 2ND MATCH - 10.5 Seconds 3RD MATCH - 10 Seconds Tips: All you have to do is hammer either B1 or B3! : If you start pressing before the pistol goes off, you will be given a warning (Flying Start). : If you do 3 flying starts, you are disqualified. : When playing in 2-player mode, a tie gives each player 1000 bonus points. : Try to start just before the gun. This can subtract about .5 sec from your time as your guy takes that long to get up. (Thanx to BFoddy) -------------- 4b) LONG JUMP -------------- Controls: Button 1 - Run Button 2 - Jump Button 3 - Run Qualifying Jumps: 1ST MATCH - 6 Metres 2ND MATCH - 8.5 Metres 3RD MATCH - 9 Metres Tips: Hammer either B1 or B3 then, just before you get to the white line, hold B2 down to start the angle increase. Let go when you have the angle you want! : The character will then jump at that angle. : The best angles to go for are 42-45 degrees. : Jumping from the exact center of the line gives a speed boost of 100. : Jumping while touching any other part of the line gives a speed boost of 50. ------------------ 4c) JAVELIN THROW ------------------ Controls: Button 1 - Run Button 2 - Throw Button 3 - Run Qualifying Throws: 1ST MATCH - 65 Metres 2ND MATCH - 85 Metres 3RD MATCH - 90 Metres Tips: Hammer either B1 or B3 then, just before you cross the line, hold B2 down to start the angle increase. Let go when you have the angle you want. : The Javelin will be thrown at that angle. : The best angle to throw is 42 degrees. : Hammering B1 and B3, whilst the Javelin is in the air, makes it fly faster and further! (Thanx to BFoddy) ---------------------- 4d) 110 METER HURDLES ---------------------- Controls: Button 1 - Run Button 2 - Jump Button 3 - Run Qualifying Times: 1ST MATCH - 14.5 Seconds 2ND MATCH - 12 Seconds 3RD MATCH - 11.5 Seconds Tips: This event is the same as the 100 Meter Dash except you have to jump aswell. : Hammer B1 or B3 to run and press B2 to jump over the hurdles. : Keep hammering B1 and B3 whilst you jump! : Instead of trying to run your hardest, run quite fast but concentrate mostly on jumping over the hurdles. If you fall over a hurdle it costs more time than running slightly slower. Make sure you run fast enough to be able to jump over the hurdles though! : When playing in 2-player mode, a tie gives each player 1000 bonus points. (See BONUSES section for more info) : Try to start just before the gun. This can subtract about .5 sec from your time as your guy takes that long to get up. (Thanx to BFoddy) ----------------- 4e) HAMMER THROW ----------------- Controls: Button 1 - Start Spin Button 2 - Throw Button 3 - Start Spin Qualifying Throws: 1ST MATCH - 73 Metres 2ND MATCH - 81 Metres 3RD MATCH - 85 Metres Tips: Press B1 or B3 to start your spin, then when the hammer turns red, press and hold B2 to increase the angle. : What angle you stop it on = what angle you throw it at. : A Perfect throw will have 1500 speed, 45 degree angle. : The faster the speed: the better the windup and it is easier to get a perfect throw. : Perfect throws go 99.99 metres most of the time. : The whirling man can be distracting. Watch the power bar instead of the man. Try to hit button 2 when it is just at the maximum. (Thanx to BFoddy) -------------- 4f) HIGH JUMP -------------- Controls: Button 1 - Start Run Button 2 - Jump Button 3 - Start Run Qualifying Jumps: 1ST MATCH - 2 Metres 30 2ND MATCH - 2 Metres 38 3RD MATCH - 2 Metres 40 Tips: Press B1 or B3 to start your run. Tap B2 to ease yourself over the top. : Do not hold B2 down. : Only hold B2 down when you are above the bar and need to fall down past it. : Bashing B1 and B3 whilst your player is in the air, makes him jump higher. (Thanx to BFoddy) ============================================================ 5) BONUSES ============================================================ Heres some strange hidden bonuses that have been found... Bonus Bird ----------- When you get to the Javelin Throw event, run fast and then hold the throw button down (B2), making the javelin soar high into the air. If it gets high enough (just beyond the top of the screen), it will hit a bird which will fall and give you 1000 points. Bonus Mole ----------- On the high jump level, fail the first two jumps on purpose (knock the bar off). On the 3rd attempt, clear the bar and a mole pops his head up through the ground and you get 1000 bonus points. Hurdles Cheat -------------- Note: (This doesnt work on some machines) (You will need a watch or a timer) Have one person win the race normally. The other player should take his time. After 40 seconds, the clock stops running down. Use a watch to ensure a 100+ second finish time. The + is how many seconds you get credited for. If timed right you can finish in 1 second! (According to the score board) Your mates will wonder how you were so fast! ============================================================ 6) COMMENTS ============================================================ Heres some tips that may help you to get a little faster at bashing those buttons: 1. When you are button bashing, dont use the same hand. (It works better for me using both) 2. When you are bashing them, try not to hit them too hard, that way you wont raise your fingers up as much and they will come down and hit the buttons quicker, from a shorter distance. Or if you cant do it properly, there is sort of a cheaty way... Get a thin shirt, put your thumb in it, then rub your thumb accross button 1 then accross to button 3. This can work really well, but it depends on how big the buttons are, and its sort of cheaty so dont use it too much. =) ---------- Heres my best scores for each event! 100 METER DASH - 7 Seconds 97 LONG JUMP - 9 Metres 45 JAVELIN THROW - 96 Metres 76 110 METER HURDLES - 9 Seconds 45 HAMMER THROW - 99.99 Metres HIGH JUMP - 2 Metres 43 Heres Bennett Foddy's best scores for each event! 100 METER DASH - 9 Seconds 35 LONG JUMP - 9 Metres 38 JAVELIN THROW - (can't get a record :-/) 110 METER HURDLES - 12 Seconds 84 HAMMER THROW - 96.88 Metres HIGH JUMP - 2 Metres 42 (Thanx to BFoddy) Heres David Tolley's best scores for each event! 100 METER DASH - 8 Seconds 54 LONG JUMP - 9 Metres 45 JAVELIN THROW - 96 Metres 72 110 METER HURDLES - 10 Seconds 95 HAMMER THROW - 98.50 Metres HIGH JUMP - 2 Metres 43 (Thanx to DTolley) ---------- If you have any questions, anything to add or have comments, feel free to e-mail me at FatalZapper@hotmail.com and you'll usually get a reply within a day. ============================================================ 7) ALL ABOUT ME ============================================================ My Contributor Page on Gamefaqs is: http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/recognition/20939.html ============================================================ 8) SPECIAL THANKS ============================================================ Thanks to Bennett Foddy (BFoddy) for some great tips, his scores and support!
