I decided to write this FAQ, since I got the PAL-version a couple days before it's releasedate and people in the rest of the world still don't have the game. That way my FAQ could be useful, because it would be the first. In this FAQ you can check out how to unlock certain features of the game, and some other useful information about this wonderful sequel to the great N64-game we all loved. ======== Versions ======== -------------- 0.9 - Made the base. Almost everything, except the Time Trial coin guides, is available. -------------- 1.0 - Finished the base, by adding the remaining alter-ego's and some other details. I also added TT coin guides for four Hard-levels, section 2.2 -------------- ======== Contents ======== 1. Boarders and boards ====================== -------------------- 1.1 Ricky Winterborn -------------------- 18 years old, born in Whistler, Canada. His clothing and speech are heavliy influenced by punk and electronic music. He is the type of guy that doesn't like it if someone else scores more points than him. His attitude makes him say rude and offensive things from time to time. He got Akari's attention with this subtle bad boy-image, en rumours say the two are having a relationship. Speed: 6 Acceleration: 5 Jump: 8 Turning: 5 Balance: 5 - Board 1: Ghetto Yeti (Freezero) Speed: 6 Acceleration: 5 Jump: 8 Turning: 5 Balance: 5 - Board 2: Winterborn (Urban Giant) Speed: 8 Acceleration: 6 Jump: 5 Turning: 5 Balance: 5 Required: 2 Time trial coins - Board 3: Mind Invasion (Alientech) Speed: 5 Acceleration: 5 Jump: 6 Turning: 8 Balance: 5 Required: 5 Time trial coins - Board 4: 8-Bit Soul (Nintendo) Speed: 8 Acceleration: 8 Jump: 9 Turning: 8 Balance: 6 Required: 9 Time trial coins Alter ego: Frosty Winterball ---------------- 1.2 Akari Hayami ---------------- 19 years young, born in Kobe, Japan. Akari has a gentle character. She doesn't mind congratulating others with their victories, and she even encourages them. Because she isn't very big, she can get a bit upset if people treat her to rough. It is said that she beat Ricky in a half-pipe-competition last season, but Ricky denies it. Akari prefers top 40-hits, but from time to time you can hear Ricky-kind of punk blowing from her car-speakers too. Kemen is a calm dude. Insults and arguments don't seem to bother him too much. In a conflict he'll prefer to stay calm instead of getting upset. If he wins he'll show his wildest side, including cool dance moves. While preparing for a competition, he usually listens to hard rap-music, to get in the rhythm. Her hiphop-divastyle guarantees that she looks good on the mountain and races down it stylish and smart. She'll never show her real emotions publically if that means she doesn't look smart and stylish. It's the first time Tara is with the crew and that's why she has the feeling she has to prove herself for the respect she thinks she deserves. He's a born leader that can be very sharp and to-the-point. When things don't go the way he wants them to go, he'll get grumpy. He's more interested in setting the standard, than following it. His already impressive physical qualities have improved this year because of his participation in the Summer-, as well as the Winter Extreme Sports. Rob has been seen with Tara and Kemen mostly, probably because of the age difference between him and the other two. Rob likes mountains that symbolize his favourite type of rockmusic: hard, fast and dark. Speed: 7 Acceleration: 5 Jump: 5 Turning: 6 Balance: 8 - Board 1: Infinite (Frontside) Speed: 7 Acceleration: 5 Jump: 5 Turning: 6 Balance: 8 - Board 2: GCN (Nintendo) Speed: 6 Acceleration: 5 Jump: 8 Turning: 6 Balance: 7 Required: 2 Time trial coins - Board 3: Broken Forest (Urban Giant) Speed: 6 Acceleration: 8 Jump: 5 Turning: 6 Balance: 7 Required: 5 Time trial coins - Board 4: Conquest (Free Zero) Speed: 8 Acceleration: 8 Jump: 7 Turning: 7 Balance: 9 Required: 9 Time trial coins Alter-ego: Bones Haywood --------------------- 1.6 Frosty Winterball --------------------- Frosty is Ricky's alter-ego, but besides the name they don't look like each other. Frosty is a snowman, with some funny lines of well done voice-acting. He is very cool animated and to be honest, he cracks me up everytime I see him boarding on a rocket, a penguin or a NES-controller. To unlock him, beat Extreme Match mode with Ricky. ------------------ 1.7 Crystal Hayami ------------------ Crystal is Akari's alter-ego. She has the same shape as Akari, but she has a metallic/purple/transparent (you could compare it to 'Shadow Mario' from Super Mario Sunshine too, but Crystal is more purple instead of blue and is more transparent and metallic too... pffff, just unlock her yourself :P) look all over her body. Crystal doesn't wear any clothing, but to all you horny teenagers out there: you don't get to see anything in thát league. Her voice is very robot-ish. To unlock her, beat Extreme Match mode with Akari. -------------------- 1.8 Titanium Vazquez -------------------- Titanium is Kemen's alter-ego. He is actually very similar to Crystal Hayami, but ofcourse Titanium has Kemen's shape. He isn't purple either, but more... titanium-colored. He makes some weird metalish sounds. No real surprises here. To unlock him, beat Extreme Match mode with Kemen. ----------------- 1.9 Mimi Le Moose ----------------- Mimi is Tara's alter-ego. There isn't much to tell about Mimi, besides that she is a moose which you probably already knew by seeing her name. Her voice-acting isn't as cool as most others. If you can't get a cool moose-sound, just put in some human voice-acting like they did with Frosty. This 'MWIHUOOWW'-sound (or whatever) doesn't sound very cool to me. Ah well, who cares. To unlock her, beat Extreme Match mode with Tara. ------------------ 1.10 Bones Haywood ------------------ Bones is Rob's alter-ego. Bones is a pirate. Well, he probably wás a pirate. All that's left of him, are his bones and his heart, beating in his chest. He still has his pirate-hat and his eyepatch though. This dude has some really cool voice acting. Harrr! Ahoy! Shiver me timbers! Treasure! A lot of cool pirate-talk, aye! To unlock him, beat Extreme Match mode with Rob. ------------------ 1.11 Special Boards ------------------ The game contains some special boards that can be used with all the boarders, and have to be unlocked. You can unlock these boards by getting trophy's at Gate Challenges. Board 1: Mr. Beaks (Boardlife) Speed: 6 Acceleration: 5 Jump: 6 Turning: 5 Balance: 5 Unlock this board by getting 2 trophy's at Gate challenges. Mr. Beaks is a weird penguin, shaped like a snowboard. Sometimes you'll hear him yell if you land a bit rough. This board is only a joke, cause as you can see it doesn't have any specific advantages. Actually Mr. Beaks sucks overall, but he looks funny and if you want some kind of a light handicap when racing against your friends, he proves to be a good choice. Board 2: Old School (Nintendo) Speed: 5 Acceleration: 6 Jump: 8 Turning: 5 Balance: 6 Unlock this board by getting 5 trophy's at Gate challenges. I like Old School a lot, because it's a NES-controller. I loved the NES. This 'board' has the D-pad, A, B, Start and Select buttons you'll most definitely recognize if you've ever seen a controller from that good old Nintendo Entertainment System. It has the same specifics as Tara's DNA, which makes Old School a pretty mediocre board, that makes some cool retro-sounds. Board 3: Powder Painter (Grind Theory) Speed: 6 Acceleration: 5 Jump: 5 Turning: 8 Balance: 6 Unlock this board by getting 9 trophy's at Gate challenges. This Special Board is very cool too. Because it's a brush, it leaves paint on the snow. The color of the paint constantly changes. When you jump, it makes some cool 'splush'-sounds. It has the same specifics as Tara's Crime Scene, which makes it a good board for beginners. Board 4: NST 1080-A (Otherworld Elements) Speed: 8 Acceleration: 9 Jump: 5 Turning: 6 Balance: 7 Unlock this board by getting all 18 trophy's at Gate challenges. This 'board' is very funny, if you just want to have a good laugh for a couple seconds. It's a rocket where you stand on. If you press L to gain speed, there will burst flames out of the rocket and you'll fly down the mountain like a maniac. Funny detail: if the board is twisted and you use L, the flames go the wrong way and your speed will decrease. My advise for this one: Just watch out you don't fill your damage-meter cause the crashes are awful with this baby. On the other hand it isn't a disaster if you fall, because this thing's acceleration is sick. I used this board to unlock the alter-ego's, because with this thing you just know you're gonna win. =================== 2. Time Trial Coins =================== <<<<< UNDER HEAVY CONSTRUCTION >>>>> ---------- 2.1 Novice ---------- ++++++++++++++++ 2.1.1 Ski School ++++++++++++++++ This one is so easy that I hope you don't need my FAQ for it. Anyways, just follow the main path. The only sidepath you have to take is the one that the third piece leads you to automatically. This third piece is under an ad-board, and you just have to board underneath this thing to get to the right way. Easy stuff, really. +++++++++++++++++++++ 2.1.2 Tenderfoot Pass +++++++++++++++++++++ Tenderfoot Pass is way to easy too if you ask me. If you just follow where this one takes you automatically, you'll see all five pieces. When you hear them, you see them too. I don't need to explain anything about this one. ++++++++++++++++++++ 2.1.3 Frosty Shadows ++++++++++++++++++++ This one is a bit more interesting than the other two Novice-levels. The first coin-piece is not hidden, but you'll need to jump over the fence in order to get it. The second is in the barn on the right. Continue until you see some houses. Make the jump on the right of the path, with all the warning sign-ish things. Go straight ahead here, and you'll get the third piece. Now choose the left way, that's barricaded by trashcans. You can just go through them. Go ahead and on the balcony with the two people, the fourth piece is located. Go on and jump OVER the grind-rail. Somewhere between the trees there, the fifth piece is located. -------- 2.2 Hard -------- +++++++++++++++++++ 2.2.1 Powder Threat +++++++++++++++++++ When the word Go appears, you gotta accelerate as fast as you can. Follow the snowscooter into the garage. If you're too slow, the garage will be closed and the first coin-piece is unreachable. So hurry up at the start! The second piece is located IN the house that will soon enough get in your sight. So break through the glass, and board through the house. The third can be a bit tricky. When you leave the house, you'll get to something like a bridge. You can board under it, but you need to go up (on the left side) and make a jump so that you'll land on the pipe. You need to grind this pipe to get the third piece. The fourth piece is a bit easier, if you just keep focusing on the left side of the track. It is located between the safety-net and a tree, as far to the left as is possible. The last piece is located on the left side too. When you make the big jump/fall, go left instead of straight ahead. Now you won't be able to miss this one. +++++++++++++++++++++ 2.2.2 Tree Top Trauma +++++++++++++++++++++ The first one is located on a side-path, but it is very easy to see. You'll probably see this piece immediately, but just in case, stay on the right side of the track. Now just go straight ahead, and grind the horizontal hanging trees. At the sawing place, choose the right path, to get the third piece. Board on to the next sawing-building and you'll definatly notice the fourth piece too. It's in the center of the path. When you get out of this building, you'll see too rails on the left-side of the path. Grind one of them and the last piece is right in front of you. ++++++++++++++++++++ 2.2.3 Grits 'N Gravy ++++++++++++++++++++ Stay on the left, and you'll be taken up a bit by the path automatically. Here's the first piece, waiting for you to pick it up. If you continue, you'll see the bridge. If you don't go over it with top speed, you'll fall through it and not get the second coin-piece. So go as fast as you can and you'll have the second piece that's located at the end of the bridge. Try to avoid the explosive barrels, because they will make obtaining the third piece a bit harder. When you've passed the bridge, stay on the right side of the path and when you went up a bit you'll have number three. Now make sure you stay on the right, high side of the level and don't go down from this little hill. Grind the rail here and when you've reached the other side, grind the rail there too. The fourth coin-piece is located on this rail. The grind will probably take you the right way automatically, so just try to make sure you keep your balance and everything will be alright. Stay left as much as possible and a couple meters before you finish, you'll get the last piece. If you don't stay left, it will still be possible to get the last piece, but then you'll have to make a sharp turn to the left before you finish. You'll see it. +++++++++++++++++++++ 2.2.4 Trestle Trouble +++++++++++++++++++++ Try to stay as much to the right as possible. You'll see the first piece. Go up and get the piece, not much explanation can help with this one. Go through the S-turn with all the animals. Now try to go straight ahead, or maybe a bit to the left. Go up the little hill and you'll have the second piece, which you can probably see soon enough. To get the third piece, go to the right as much as possible. You'll go up a bit and will soon enough see number three too. Stay on the high, right side and make the jump to the other side. Now go straight ahead and be careful not to fall in the hole. Jump over this hole and you'll have the fourth. Continue, and watch out for yet another hole in the path. Now just go straight ahead and you'll see the fifth piece in the middle of the way. ----------- 2.4 Extreme ----------- +++++++++++++++++++ 2.4.6 Wit's Thicket +++++++++++++++++++ Go straight ahead, go right around the big rock in the middle of the way and go right again, around the next high rock. Follow this high path and when you see the coin-piece, try to time your jump perfectly to get. This is a hard one, so there might by some trial 'n error with this one. I make this jump by going straight ahead and making the jump, but you can also go a bit further and jump at the coin-piece from the leftside of this 'halfpipe'. Now, very important, after you boarded between the two trees, don't make the jump right in front of you. If you do, you can't get the second coin-piece. Go left before the jump and stay as much to the right of this path as possible. The path will go up a bit and you'll probably see the coin-piece. Make a light turn to the right, behind the big rock, and you'll get the coin-piece. Just fall straight ahead, through the thin layer of ice, and go on underground. Go on until you've reached a small entrance (very blue-ish). Go through it and take the left side of the high path in front of you. When you see the tree that almost asks you to grind it, don't do this, but go past it on the right side. Now it's almost impossible to miss the third coin-piece. After the third, there are several options to get to the path you need for the fourth (and fifth). You can try to jump on the deep snow to your right, directly after getting the third piece. You can also grind the tree to get to the deep snow. If you missed both, you can still get there by jumping onto it, somewhere near the squirrels, just before the turn pushes you to the left. From here I can advise you to grind the upcoming tree, because behind the hills, the fourth piece is hidden very far to the right. This is much easier if you grind this tree. After you got the fourth, just continue, but don't go too fast. Directly after the little jump, the fifth is located somewhere to your left. If you go too fast, you'll miss it and have to do the whole thing all over again. ============= 3. Tips ======= I have a couple tips that might be useful. * If you need shortcuts for a level, first try to get the Gate Challenge trophy and the Time Trial coin there. By going through all the gates or getting all the coin-pieces, you'll get to know some useful shortcuts that you, ofcourse, can also use in a regular race. It can also be useful to stay behind the opponent, to check if he/she knows some cool shortcuts. * Make big jumps where it's possible, cause that way you'll go a lot faster. Especially when you're in deep powder-snow, it's recommendable to make a lot of jumps. This way you don't have the disadvantages of some types of underground, because they all have different grades of resistance and they can slow you down. Also, ofcourse, you can skip a lot of meters doing this. * Don't forget to push the control stick forward, even when holding L, because you'll definitely go faster if you do. * If you want to unlock all extra costumes and alter-ego's, I advise you to use the special board NST 1080-A. With this rocket, you'll go much faster and it's a lot easier. Ofcourse it's a little less challenging too, so it might get a bit boring. But if you want to unlock it all, quickly, the NST 1080-A is your 'board'. ========= 7. Ending ========= Everything that has a beginning, has an end. This FAQ is no exception about that. I hope you could use some of the information in this FAQ. Ofcourse I have some people and sites to thank. NST, for developing this cool game. Nintendo, for publishing it and of course all the other great things they have done for us gamers. GameFAQs, for making that cool site where I always find whatever I need in a couple of seconds. IGN, for making a great games-site with everything you need CubeZone.nl, for giving me the opportunity to be a "games journalist" and getting a lot of games ;) Nintendo Benelux, for giving me this game in particular. Hehe. That's it, see ya! P.S: If you would like to use this FAQ on your site, please just give me the credits, because I worked hard on it. It would be a bit lame to put your own name on this FAQ now, wouldn't it? :)
