Regular Crops and Trees ~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ These are the basic crops in the game. You can buy the seeds from Vesta's Farm and plant them to grow B-rank crops. If you want higher-ranking crops, you'll have to buy fertilizer for them. It costs 40G a bag (which is considerably less than it was in HM:AWL) and you'll need to use 4 bags to raise a crop one rank. There are three ranks of crops--B is the lowest, A is about average, and S is the highest. Plant and water your seed, then put one bag of fertilizer on it. About twelve hours later when the little triangles completely disappear, it's time to put another bag on. You'll need to get all of the fertilizing done before the flower falls off the plant. Use your crops for cooking, give them to townspeople as gifts (if you want to marry Marlin, a good way to get him to like you is to give him any S-rank crop), put them in the brown basket-type bin in the shipping room for Takakura to take to town and sell, sell them to Van when he comes to town on the third and eighth of each month (for crops worth at least 110G, you can haggle with Van for a higher selling price), or save them (in your rucksack or in the food storage cooler in the shipping room--after you start chapter 2, you will also have a refrigerator in your kitchen where you can store food items) until you get the seed maker and put them into it to get seeds. You can get the seed maker from Daryl after befriending him or talk to Takakura sometime late in the first chapter until he says he saw a machine that makes seeds for sale in the city and order it from the ledger in the shipping room for 6000G. (If you want to get it from Daryl for free, avoid talking to Takakura until you get it; it may not be possible to get it from him in this game once the seed maker appears in your ledger for sale.) It has twelve slots. Each slot can hold one crop; each crop will turn into two seeds. You can also buy tree seeds from Vesta's farm. They'll also be B-ranked; it takes 30 bags of fertilizer to raise a tree one rank. They will have to be completely fertilized before the tree matures. A tree takes one year to bear fruit; it bears fruit for only one season and you'll get 30 fruit during that season. However, trees do not die after the fruit is gone. If you don't cut it down with the hoe it will give you fruit every year. The fruit will fall off the tree and you can pick it up off the ground (it disappears after a day or two so don't leave it laying there forever) or you can stand next to the tree and shake it to make the fruit fall. In HM:AWL, the seeds were the most valuable. In this game, not only is that backward (except for the trees), but the worth of crops in general has gone down considerably. The best way to make money growing crops is to get Tartan as quickly as you can (see second-generation crops, below) and make the third- generation "rare" crops. |--------------------------------||-----------------||-----------------| | Buy Seeds from Vesta's Farm || Sell Crop || Sell Seed | |------------|------||-----------||-----------------||-----------------| | Crop | Buy || Season || B | A | S || B | A | S | |------------|------||-----------||-----------------||-----------------| | Tomato | 30G || Sp/Su/Fa || 35 | 45 | 55 || 15 | 25 | 35 | | Watermelon | 60G || Sp/Su || 65 | 75 | 85 || 30 | 40 | 50 | | Strawberry | 30G || Sp/Fa/Wi || 35 | 45 | 55 || 15 | 25 | 35 | | Melon | 50G || Su/Fa || 70 | 80 | 90 || 25 | 35 | 45 | | Turnip | 20G || Su/Fa/Wi || 25 | 35 | 45 || 10 | 20 | 30 | | Potato | 40G || Sp/Wi || 60 | 70 | 80 || 20 | 30 | 40 | | Carrot | 30G || Fa/Wi || 45 | 55 | 65 || 15 | 25 | 35 | | Yam | 40G || Fa || 60 | 70 | 80 || 20 | 30 | 40 | | Peach | 180G || Summer || 50 | 60 | 70 || 90 | 100 | 110 | | Orange | 140G || Summer || 40 | 50 | 60 || 70 | 80 | 90 | | Grape | 160G || Fall || 40 | 50 | 60 || 80 | 90 | 100 | | Banana | 280G || Summer || 35 | 45 | 55 || 140 | 150 | 160 | | Apple | 140G || Fall || 30 | 40 | 50 || 70 | 80 | 90 | |-------------------||-----------||-----------------||-----------------| ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~ 3. Second-Generation Crops ~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Any time after the beginning of the second chapter, on a day when Takakura has taken something to the city to sell for you, follow him into his house at night to trigger a cutscene where he shows you a plant he brought home from the city. Its name is Tartan and it can talk. Talk to Tartan and he will give you two options--talk to him, or analyze something. If you give him a crop or seed to analyze he'll tell you about it--things like its rank and when to plant it. (He does not like carrots and will only take them in seed form.) If you talk to him a lot (it takes about ten minutes in real time) he'll give you a third option, to hybridize something. You'll need to stop by and talk to him periodically to keep this option. (If you come back and he doesn't offer you the hybrid option, just talk to him until he does.) Compliment him or agree with him whenever he asks you questions. (You don't have to be sincere. He likes empty flattery just as well, as long as you tell him what he wants to hear.) Once you have the hybrid option you can combine two regular crops to make a completely new hybrid crop seed. (You can do this with either the actual crop or with seeds--although if you put in a crop, you will only get one seed back. It's better to put the crop into the seedmaker, get two seeds, and then make the hybrid with the seeds.) These crops are useful for cooking and can also be sold or given as gifts, or you can combine them with Tartan to make third- generation crops. (Some of these "rare" crops have special properties or influence your son toward a particular career! Others can be sold for 1000s of G apiece. See the third-generation crop section for more info.) If you put two seeds of different ranks in, you may or may not get the higher rank for your seed. (If you put in a B seed and an S seed you might even get an A seed!) Normally, though, if at least one of your seeds is an S rank, you're more likely to get an A- or S-rank result. This is fairly random so if it's absolutely crucial that you get a high-ranking seed, save your game before you go talk to Tartan and if you don't get what you want, just reset and try again.) These crops will not grow in poor soil unless you use a gemsoil flower (see "Special Flowers and Tartan" below). *Note* Some of the names have changed from the last game. The tomaca is now a trady (there are now 2 tradys; I'm calling the tomaca Trady2 to avoid confusion), and the two berrytos are now a berrylon and a berrican. Speed refers to how fast the crop grows: VF (Very Fast), F (Fast), SF (Some- what Fast), SS (Somewhat Slow), S (Slow), VS (Very Slow). The actual number of days it takes for your crop to grow depends on what time of day you plant it and how often you water it. If you don't water twice a day it will take longer for your crop to be ready to harvest (up to two days, in some cases, for very slow crops like carrots). |------------|------------|-----------|--------|-------|---------------------| | Crop 1 | Crop 2 | Result | Season | Speed | Looks Like | |------------|------------|-----------|--------|-------|---------------------| | Tomato | Watermelon | Gretoma | Sp-Fa | SS | Green tomato | | | Strawberry | Berrytoma | Sp-Fa | SF | Pink tomato | | | Melon | Melotoma | Sp-Fa | SS | Yellow tomato | | | Turnip | Trady | Sp-Fa | SS | Red turnip | | | Potato | Tobatama | Sp-Fa | SF | Brown/green striped | | | | | | | tomato | | | Carrot | Trady2 | Sp-Fa | SF | Carrot w/green top | | | Yam | Yamato | Sp-Fa | SF | Purple/green | | | | | | SF | striped tomato | |------------|------------|-----------|--------|-------|---------------------| | Watermelon | Strawberry | Berryber | Sp-Su | SS | Red watermelon | | | Melon | Melober | Sp-Su | SS | Yellowish watermelon| | | Turnip | Raury | Sp-Su | SS | Dark green turnip | | | Potato | Bashber | Sp-Su | SS | Brown watermelon | | | Carrot | Cabber | Sp-Su | SS | Brown-striped carrot| | | Yam | Kashry | Sp-Su | SS | Purple watermelon | |------------|------------|-----------|--------|-------|---------------------| | Strawberry | Melon | Berrylon | Fa-Sp | SF | Green strawberry | | | Turnip | Dhibe | Fa-Sp | F | Red turnip | | | Potato | Paberryta | Fa-Sp | SF | Brown strawberry | | | Carrot | Caberry | Fa-Sp | S | Red carrot-green top| | | Yam | Berrican | Fa-Sp | SS | Purple strawberry | |------------|------------|-----------|--------|-------|---------------------| | Melon | Turnip | Dhilon | Su-Fa | S | Light green turnip | | | Potato | Potamelo | Su-Fa | SS | Brown melon | | | Carrot | Camelo | Su-Fa | SF | Yellow carrot | | | Yam | Sholo | Su-Fa | SF | similar to melon | |------------|------------|-----------|--------|-------|---------------------| | Turnip | Potato | Radita | Wi-Su | SF | Brown turnip | | | Carrot | Cady | Wi-Su | SF | Orange turnip | | | Yam | Kandy | Wi-Su | F | Purple turnip | |------------|------------|-----------|--------|-------|---------------------| | Potato | Carrot | Tataro | Wi-Su | SF | Red potato | | | Yam | Bashota | Wi-Su | F | Purple potato | |------------|------------|-----------|--------|-------|---------------------| | Carrot | Yam | Kanro | Su-Fa | SF | Purple carrot | |------------|------------|-----------|--------|-------|---------------------| ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~ 4. Second-Generation Trees ~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ These are pretty much the same as the regular, first-generation trees, except for the appearance of the fruit. Special Flowers and Tartan ~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ There are three types of flowers that you can use with Tartan to give your crops special properties. (This does not work with tree seeds.) Give Tartan a seed or crop and a flower. Here's what will happen: Happy Lamp flower: These are found in the summer growing in the grassy area to the left of Gustafa's yurt. (You can also find one off to the right of Cody's trailer near the pyrotechnicians' fence.) They are small and red and look a bit like tulips. If you give Tartan a seed and a happy lamp it will allow the seed to be planted in any season.(*Note* The crop that you harvest will still be a regular crop that has to be planted in its normal season and will make a normal seed. This effect only affects the seed you use it on. *Note 2* This flower allows you to grow a crop in any *one* season. If your crop isn't ready to harvest at the end of the season, and the next season is not one that the crop usually grows in, it will die.) Gemsoil: These are small pale-yellow flowers that grow near the dig site in fall. (Look closely; they may be hard to see on some televisions.) They will allow the crop to be planted in any soil. This is useful for the rare crops as most of them only grow in fertile soil. (*Note* This one also only affects the seed you use it on, not any crops that grow from that seed.) Upseed: You'll only get ten of these red-and-yellow-striped flowers every winter, so use them sparingly! One can be found on the way up to the dig, on the left-hand side along the riverbank and another can be found near Cody's trailer. Once you pick one, it will only take two days to grow back. Use these to raise an A- or B-ranked seed to S-rank. (According to what I wrote in this FAQ originally, this would work with tree fruits. However, I can no longer get it to work and it has been confirmed that you can't mix a tree fruit and a flower.) Special S-ranking trick for fruit: In the last game if you put an S-rank crop in with a fruit you'd get an S-rank fruit. This trick now only works with a fruit and an S-rank turnip. Put the fruit in the first slot and the turnip in the second. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~ 6. Third-Generation Crops ~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ There are 24 third-generation crops that you can make by combining two of the second-generation crops above. These do not have names (each time Tartan makes one for the first time, he asks you to name it), they have numbers (1-25; they skipped #10 in this game) and are commonly referred to as "rare crops." To avoid confusion, when talking about them, most people call them "rare crop 9" or "rare tree 7." That's also how they're listed in most recipes, so that's how I've named them here. (You only get four characters to name your new crop so I usually give mine names like RT01 (trees) and RC15 (crops) to keep them straight.) The numbering system is completely different in this game from the way they were organized in the last one; only the trees and rare crops 1-3 are the same in this game (also 23-25, after you adjust for there being no 10.) All rare crops have to be planted in the very fertile field at the back of your farm or hybridized with a gemsoil flower using Tartan. (Get the very fertile field--listed in your ledger as "great field" in chapter 2--by talking to Takakura after Tartan gives you the hybridize option. Tak will say something about clearing the shrubs at the back of your farm. Now you can go to the ledger in the shipping room and buy the field for 20,000G.) Some crops have special properties--for example, number 5, which looks like an eggplant, will water the 8 spaces directly touching it whenever you water it. Other crops will influence your child toward a particular career if you show them to him. *Combinations marked with a star (*) are ones that I have heard about from other people/places/websites but that I have not been able to get to work for me after repeated testing (at least ten times). So I can't promise they'll work. However, I have at least one confirmed combination for each of the 24 rare crops. |-----|-----------|-----------|--------|-------|------------|----------------| | No. | Crop 1 | Crop 2 | Season | Third-Generation Trees ~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ There are nine rare trees. Unlike in the last game where they all looked like some sort of nut, or a cantaloupe that grew on trees, this time around, the rare trees actually look like real fruit--there's a starfruit, for example, and a pomegranate. (Some of them do not look like normal tree fruits, though. One looks exactly like a canteloupe--a melon with a brown and tan rind and pale orange flesh that grows on a vine, if you're not familiar with American produce--and another looks like some sort of a red root vegetable, maybe a radish or onion.) These trees will grow in any soil (I think; at least, I have some of them planted in the poor-soil field closest to the house and the middle on near the chicken coop and so far they're still alive and doing well). |-----|-----------|-----------|--------|------------| | No. | Tree 1 | Tree 2 | Season | Looks Like | |-----|-----------|-----------|--------|------------| | 1 | Jurum | Phurum | Winter | Some sort | | | Jurum | Phuju | | of red root| | | Phurum | Phuju | | vegetable | |-----|-----------|-----------|--------|------------| | 2 | Lanmuge | Gehju | Summer | Green | | | Magerum | Orahge | | Coconut | | | Jurum | Magenge | | | |-----|-----------|-----------|--------|------------| | 3 | Magenge | Oraphu | Winter | Red-orange | | | Magenge | Appage | | Pomegranate| | | Oraphu | Appage | | | |-----|-----------|-----------|--------|------------| | 4 | Lanmuge | Magerum | Summer | Canteloupe | | | Lanmuge | Magenge | | | | | Magerum | Magenge | | | |-----|-----------|-----------|--------|------------| | 5 | Lanmuge | Appage | Fall | Green | | | Magerum | Oraphu | | mango | | | Phurum | Magenge | | | |-----|-----------|-----------|--------|------------| | 6 | Magenge | Phuju | Fall | Dark red | | | Appage | Orahge | | buckeye | | | Oraphu | Gehju | | nut | |-----|-----------|-----------|--------|------------| | 7 | Jurum | Appage | Summer | Yellow- | | | Phurum | Gehju | | orange | | | Magerum | Phuju | | starfruit | |-----|-----------|-----------|--------|------------| | 8 | Jurum | Orahge | Fall | Golden | | | Jurum | Gehju | | apple | | | Orahge | Gehju | | | |-----|-----------|-----------|--------|------------| | 9 | Lanmuge | Phuju | Spring | Green and | | | Jurum | Oraphu | | yellow | | | Phurum | Orahge | | pear | |-----|-----------|-----------|--------|------------| ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~ 8. Selling Hybrid Crops ~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hybrid crops can be sold or made into seeds just like first-generation crops can. Sell them to Van or put them into the crop-shipping basket to send them off to the city with Takakura. (Keep in mind, though, that if you sell things worth over 100G to Van, you can haggle the price up a bit. You can't do that with things you sell through Tak.) The main reason I put this into a separate section: I just ran out of space in the above sections. I have not listed the haggle price for any of these because of the limited amount of space but I have yet to find anything worth at least 110G that Van would NOT offer a higher price for if you work on him long enough. If you'd rather not go to the trouble, show Takakura a rare crop (not a seed) and he will put a basket in the shipping room that you can use to ship your crops and seeds just like you use the blue and white shipping bin to ship your animal products. Note that adding a gemsoil or happy lamp to a seed increases its price by around 10G and adding both increases it 20G. How I came up with these prices: I sold one B-rank of each seed and each crop, then checked the ledger the next day to see how much I made for each crop or seed. Then I reset without saving and repeated the process with A-ranks, then with S-ranks. Just to make sure the prices were the same whether you send a crop or seed to town with Takakura or sell it to Van, I picked a few random crops and seeds to sell to him (about a dozen or so) and other than the fact that you can haggle Van for a higher price on some of them, the selling price is the same. (The Rare 2 Crop seed would not show up in my assets book so I sold them to Van. The prices listed there should be the same as what you get from Tak, though.) There are some inconsistencies in the pricing; some seeds are worth the same as the crop they come from; the bashota's seeds are worth far less than the crop itself. Generally, though, the seed is worth about the 10G less than a crop of the same type and rank. |-----------|-----------------||-----------------| | Crops | Sell Crop || Sell Seed | |-----------|-----------------||-----------------| | Name | B | A | S || B | A | S | |-----------|-----|-----|-----||-----|-----|-----| | Gretoma | 75 | 85 | 95 || 65 | 75 | 85 | | Berrytoma | 50 | 60 | 70 || 45 | 55 | 65 | | Melotoma | 70 | 80 | 90 || 60 | 70 | 80 | | Trady | 40 | 50 | 60 || 30 | 40 | 50 | | Tobatama | 65 | 75 | 85 || 55 | 65 | 75 | | Trady2 | 55 | 65 | 75 || 45 | 55 | 65 | | Yamato | 65 | 75 | 85 || 55 | 65 | 75 | | Berryber | 75 | 85 | 95 || 65 | 75 | 85 | | Melober | 100 | 110 | 120 || 90 | 100 | 110 | | Raury | 70 | 80 | 90 || 60 | 70 | 80 | | Bashber | 95 | 105 | 115 || 85 | 95 | 105 | | Cabber | 80 | 90 | 100 || 70 | 80 | 90 | | Kashry | 95 | 105 | 115 || 85 | 95 | 105 | | Berrylon | 75 | 85 | 95 || 65 | 75 | 85 | | Dhibe | 40 | 50 | 60 || 40 | 50 | 60 | | Paberryta | 65 | 75 | 85 || 55 | 65 | 75 | | Caberry | 40 | 50 | 60 || 40 | 50 | 60 | | Berrican | 55 | 65 | 75 || 55 | 65 | 75 | | Dhilon | 65 | 75 | 85 || 55 | 65 | 75 | | Potamelo | 80 | 90 | 100 || 80 | 90 | 100 | | Camelo | 80 | 90 | 100 || 70 | 80 | 90 | | Sholo | 90 | 100 | 110 || 80 | 90 | 100 | | Radita | 60 | 70 | 80 || 50 | 60 | 70 | | Cady | 50 | 60 | 70 || 40 | 50 | 60 | | Kandy | 60 | 70 | 80 || 50 | 60 | 70 | | Tataro | 70 | 80 | 90 || 60 | 70 | 80 | | Bashota | 85 | 95 | 105 || 20 | 30 | 40 | | Kanro | 70 | 80 | 90 || 60 | 70 | 80 | |-----------|-----------------||-----------------| |-----------|-----------------||-----------------| | Trees | Sell Fruit || Sell Seed | |-----------|-----------------||-----------------| | Name | B | A | S || B | A | S | |-----------|-----|-----|-----||-----|-----|-----| | Lanmuge | 60 | 70 | 80 || 80 | 90 | 100 | | Magerum | 60 | 70 | 80 || 90 | 100 | 110 | | Magenge | 45 | 55 | 65 || 80 | 90 | 100 | | Appage | 40 | 50 | 60 || 85 | 95 | 105 | | Gehju | 50 | 60 | 70 || 90 | 100 | 110 | | Phurum | 45 | 55 | 65 || 75 | 85 | 95 | | Jurum | 50 | 60 | 70 || 80 | 90 | 100 | | Oraphu | 55 | 65 | 75 || 75 | 85 | 95 | | Orahge | 45 | 55 | 65 || 70 | 80 | 90 | | Phuju | 50 | 60 | 70 || 70 | 80 | 90 | |-----------|-----|-----|-----||-----|-----|-----| |-----------|-----------------||-----------------| | Rare Crop | Sell Crop || Sell Seed | |-----------|-----------------||-----------------| | Number | B | A | S || B | A | S | |-----------|-----|-----|-----||-----|-----|-----| | 1 | 105 | 205 | 305 || 55 | 155 | 255 | | 2 | 375 | 475 | 575 || 225 | 325 | 425 | | 3 | 105 | 205 | 305 || 105 | 205 | 305 | | 4 | 1650| 1750| 1850|| 1550| 1650| 1750| | 5 | 105 | 205 | 305 || 55 | 155 | 255 | | 6 | 115 | 215 | 315 || 65 | 165 | 265 | | 7 | 115 | 215 | 315 || 65 | 165 | 265 | | 8 | 140 | 240 | 340 || 90 | 190 | 290 | | 9 | 140 | 240 | 340 || 90 | 190 | 290 | | 11 | 250 | 350 | 450 || 150 | 250 | 350 | | 12 | 250 | 350 | 450 || 150 | 250 | 350 | | 13 | 250 | 350 | 450 || 150 | 250 | 350 | | 14 | 250 | 350 | 450 || 150 | 250 | 350 | | 15 | 375 | 475 | 575 || 275 | 375 | 475 | | 16 | 175 | 275 | 375 || 75 | 175 | 275 | | 17 | 150 | 250 | 350 || 50 | 150 | 250 | | 18 | 650 | 750 | 850 || 550 | 650 | 750 | | 19 | 200 | 300 | 400 || 100 | 200 | 300 | | 20 | 200 | 300 | 400 || 100 | 200 | 300 | | 21 | 200 | 300 | 400 || 100 | 200 | 300 | | 22 | 200 | 300 | 400 || 100 | 200 | 300 | | 23 | 900 | 1000| 1100|| 750 | 850 | 950 | | 24 | 150 | 250 | 350 || 100 | 200 | 300 | | 25 | 150 | 250 | 350 || 100 | 200 | 300 | |-----------|-----|-----|-----||-----|-----|-----| |-----------|-----------------||-----------------| | Rare Tree | Sell Fruit || Sell Seed | |-----------|-----------------||-----------------| | Number | B | A | S || B | A | S | |-----------|-----|-----|-----||-----|-----|-----| | 1 | 100 | 200 | 300 || 100 | 200 | 300 | | 2 | 100 | 200 | 300 || 100 | 200 | 300 | | 3 | 110 | 210 | 310 || 120 | 220 | 320 | | 4 | 150 | 250 | 350 || 160 | 260 | 360 | | 5 | 100 | 200 | 300 || 100 | 200 | 300 | | 6 | 100 | 200 | 300 || 180 | 280 | 380 | | 7 | 150 | 250 | 350 || 150 | 250 | 350 | | 8 | 100 | 200 | 300 || 190 | 290 | 390 | | 9 | 100 | 200 | 300 || 80 | 180 | 280 | |-----------|-----|-----|-----||-----|-----|-----| ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~ 9. Contact Info ~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I have personally tested most of the information in this guide. However, I'm not a perfect typist and people do make mistakes, so if you find one here, let me know. I also can't promise that the hybrid-crop combinations I have here are the only ones in the game. So if you have some information I haven't got, or a different way to make something I've already got, let me know and I'll give you credit. My e-mail address is: star dust and sun shine at Yahoo dot com Take out all of the extra spaces and put it all on one line, written like a normal e-mail address. (I write it out this way because I already had to close out one e-mail address because I posted it on one website and a bunch of web crawlers got hold of it and I ended up getting so much junk mail my computer couldn't handle it all and died trying. Hopefully this way even if a spammer *does* come across it, their computer won't be able to figure out what it's supposed to be.) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~ 10. Credits ~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Lots and LOTS of research went into this FAQ. Most of the information here was originally from other sites and for the last game. Mostly I just collected it together in one place, tested it, and changed it so that it worked correctly for this game.
