Copyright stuff 10.Revision History ============================== ************** 1.Introduction ************** So I'm sitting here, writing this MKDA "fighting guide" about Sonya Blade. Why? Sonya has been in the MK series from the beginning, yet, she never really was a fan favorite like Scorpion, Sub Zero, Johnny Cage or Reptile. Since I really like to play with underrated fighting game characters, (Dhalsim in Street Fighter, Talim in Soul Calibur 2 etc.) I chose Sonya and soon discovered what a powerful and dangerous character she really is, and she actually became one of my favorite MK characters. It's a shame that GameFAQs didn't have a guide for her...yet. Well....in fact, Sonya really is one of the Top 10 characters of the game. I'd even say she's Top 5. She's fast and her attacks do a lot of damage, things that Kitana or Mavado players would like to have ;) She has the Power Up, which makes her even more dangerous, and the Reversal which is an excellent defense move. Her weapon is quite dangerous, either. =============================== *********** 2.Biography *********** Sonya's background story in MKDA. Agent Sonya Blade and her team had finished their mission of demolishing any known ancient inter-realm portals when she received word from Jax that the Agency's portal chamber had been destroyed. With no means for traversing the realms, Sonya realized that there were noe two agents lost in Outworld. The first had been the ninja cyborg Cyrax, whom the Agency had lost contact with some time ago. And now Agent Kenshi, originally sent to find Cyrax, was lost as well. she would have to find a way to get to Outworld and bring them home. Sonya was instructed to accompany Jax to an island in the Lost Sea where the Thunder God Raiden would meet them. Now it was an abandoned reminder of the struggle between Earthrealm and the forces of evil. As she and the other heroes waited for Raiden to appear, she came to the realisation that this time she had no plan of attack. All Sonya knew for sure was that somehow she had to rescue her fellow agents. As her Special Forces training dictated, no man would be left behind. ********** 3.Controls ********** I played the GameCube version of MKDA, but that doesn't really matter... however, the controls are like this for each console: GAMECUBE XBOX PLAYSTATION 2 Attack Button 1 B X square Attack Button 2 Y Y triangle Attack Button 3 A A X Attack Button 4 X B circle Block R R R2 Change stance L L L1 Special Z black R1 The directions Forward, Up, Backwards and Down are f, u, b, d. Example: The combination d, f, 4 would mean press down, forward and then attack button 4. Yea you most likely already knew this... *************** 4.Special Moves *************** While other characters like Bo Rai Cho or Drahmin get 4 special moves, Sonya has to get along with only two humble moves. She didn't even keep her leg grab or sonic rings. Oh well... FLYING KICK (f, f, 3) - Yes, this is THE Flying Kick Liu Kang used to have before he had that stupid accident :) I don't know why they gave it to Sonya, but it wouldn't matter anyway. The Flying Kick is a quick, rushing kick to the opponents torso. If the kick is blocked, Sonya is left wide open for attacks. If The opponent crouches, Sonya simply flies over him. The Kick does good damage and can be used as a surprise attack to catch the opponent off guard, or as the last attack of a juggle combo. KISS O' DEATH (d, f, 1) - Sonya blows some kind of magic smoke at the opponent which makes him stagger a bit backwards, holding his eyes. This means he's helpless (or stunned) for a few seconds and you can attack him. Does not hit crouching opponents. FATALITY (b, f, f, d, 2) - Sonya blows a Kiss of Death at her opponent, who starts to choke and puke. The opponent eventually falls down to his knees and spits out blood, then Sonya jumps on his back and his head explodes. =================================== ***************** 5.Fighting Styles ***************** A closer look at Sonya's three fighting styles. KENPO KARATE - Sonya's default style. Kenpo is a pretty fast and balanced style, since it has lots of possibilities for juggle combos but seems a little weaker than her other two styles to me. Sonya's special ability in Kenpo is the Power-Up. Her attacks will do more damage for a few seconds if you execute the Power-Up. TAE KWON DO - Less combos than Kenpo, but more powerful and FASTER. A very simple style since it has no tricky button combinations at all. If you aren't quite sure what a tricky button combinations is in MKDA, try Frost or Hsu Hao. Sonya's special ability in Tae Kwon Do is the Reversal. KALI STICKS - These babies do great execution... The Kali Sticks have only 4 or 5 combos, but they do a lot of damage, which makes them an excellent choice everytime. Sonya doesn't have a special ability in Kali style. But the sticks are even more dangerous if you do the Power-Up in Kenpo stlye before you switch to the sticks. ===================================================== ******* 6.Moves ******* All the moves from each fighting style. =-=-=- KENPO: =-=-=- Knife Hand Strike - 1 Double Hammer Fist - d+1 Spinning Elbow Strike - b+1 Eye Gouger - 2 Knife Hand Chop - b+2 Low Punch - d+2 Standing Uppercut - u+2 Back Kick - 3 Low Heel Kick - d+3 Leg Sweep - b+3 Rising Axe Kick - 4 Shovel Kick - b+4 Low Step Punch - d+4 Neijin - special SIDE NOTES: "Double Hammer Fist" (d+1) pushes opponent away "Standing Uppercut" (u+2) knocks opponent into the air for juggle combos "Leg Sweep" (b+3) is a sweep (duh) "Rising Axe Kick" (4) knocks opponent into the air for juggle combos "Shovel Kick" (b+4) knocks opponent far away =-=-=-=-=-=- TAE KWON DO: =-=-=-=-=-=- Side Kick - 1 Hook Kick - b+1 Double Hammer Fist - d+1 Downward Axe Kick - 2 Twin Fist Punch - d+2 Spinning Heel Kick - 3 Ankle Smash - b+3 Rolling Strike - d+3 2-Hit Axe Kick - 4 Nitro Kick - b+4 Spinning Back Kick - d+4 Reversal - special SIDE NOTES: "Hook Kick" (b+1) knocks opponent down "Downward Axe Kick" (2) lets opponent bounce off the floor for combos "Spinning Heel Kick" (3) knocks opponent down "Rolling Strike" (d+3) is a rushing attack "Nitro Kick" (b+4) is a two hit combo =-=-=-=-=-=- KALI STICKS: =-=-=-=-=-=- Straight Snap Strike - 1 Low Snap Strike - d+1 Overhead Strike - f+1 Circular Strike - 2 Low Scissors Swipe - d+2 Low Swinging Strike - 3 Spinning Strike - b+3 Low Strike - d+3 Wrist Snap Strike - 4 Circular Power Strike - b+4 Chin Jab - d+4 Stick Smash - special SIDE NOTES: "Spinning Strike" (b+3) is a three hit combo "Circular Power Strike" (b+4) knocks opponent down ***************** 7.Combos/Juggling ***************** Sonya's Combos: --------------- In KENPO style: --------------- Concious Mind 3, 3 Cutting Edge 1, 3, 3 Big Guns (I wonder what kind of big guns they mean..hehe..ummm...*runs away*) 1, 1, 4 *use this to start a juggle combo* Warfare 1, 1, change style, 4, change style --------------------- In TAE KWON DO style: --------------------- Clearness of mind 4, 4 Take Out b+3, 3 Blitzkrieg b+4, change style Peaceful World 1, 1, d+3 Special Forces 4, b+3, 3 --------------------- In KALI STICKS style: --------------------- Multi-level strikes 2, 4, 3 Furious blows 4, 2, 4 Show off 2, 4, b+3 Live hand 4, 2, b+3 -------------------------- OTHER COMBOS/JUGGLE COMBOS -------------------------- For those of you that don't know what a juggle combo is: In a juggle combo, you send your opponent flying with a kick or uppercut and then do a combo on him as he is falling down helplessly. Sonya is a very good character for juggle combos. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Some combos you can do in KENPO style: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= - u+2, u+2, u+2 [10% Damage] Sonya does a powerful uppercut three times, juggling the opponent. After every uppercut, you have to walk closer to the opponent or the next uppercut will miss. - u+2, u+2, Flying Kick [11% Damage] Uppercut him two times, then do the flying kick. - 1, 1, 4, Flying Kick [20% Damage] "Big guns" combo and flying kick - 1, 1, 4, b+3 [20% Damage] "Big guns" combo and sweep as the opponent is about to hit the floor. Again, you have to walk towards the opponent if you want the sweep to work. - 1, 1, 4, 4, 4 [22% Damage] This is the "Big guns" combo (which is used in most of Sonya's Kenpo combos as the starting combo) plus two more times the high kick. - 1, 1, 4, 3, 3 [22% Damage] "Big guns" combo plus "Concious mind" combo. After the high kick (4), you havt to walk towards the opponent a bit if you want both kicks to hit him. - 1, 1, 4, 1, 1, 4 [25% Damage] "Big guns" combo two times. Simple and effective. - 1, 1, 4, Kiss of death, Power Up, 1, 1, 4, Kiss of death, any attack. The Kisses must hit the opponent while he is flying down, and the Power Up is necessary if you want to execute a second Kiss. Obviously, all these combos do more damage if you use the Power-Up. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Some combos you can do in TAE KWON DO style: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= - 2, d+2 [15% Damage] After the first kick (2), the opponent won't fly, but bounce off the floor. You have to hit him quick. - 2, 4, 4 [variies] Sonya's 4, 4-kick is a 3-hit combo! Not every kick will hit the bouncing opponent, but the first and the last kick will hit often. - 2, Flying Kick [19% Damage] The Flying Kick must be executed fast. - 2, b+4 [16% if one kick hits, 21% if two kicks hit] When you press b+4, Sonya will do multiple kicks. Only the first will hit. If you're at the wall, the second kick might also hit. - 2, 3 [21% Damage] An excellent one. Easy, and does good damage. - 2, b+3, 3 [27% Damage] A very good way to do some damage with an easy combo. The two kicks are low, which makes them inavoidable for the opponent. However, if you don't stand close enough, the second low kick will miss. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Some combos you can do in KALI STICKS style: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= - None yet. :( Well, I haven't found any. You can make your opponent bounce off the floor with b+4, but I haven't found a move that can hit him after that...well, I'll keep on trying. ...the best combo you can get in Kali style is 4, 2, b+3 anyway. ******************** 8.How to beat Moloch ******************** Moloch isn't very hard at all. The basic tactic against him is: stay a few steps away - be ready to press 'block' - wait for his swinging punch to miss - rush in - unleash a combo - rush out + press block quickly. The combos you should use: KENPO: Cutting Edge, Warfare TAE KWON DO: Peaceful World...although you have to rush out VERY quick KALI STICKS: Show Off, Multi-level strikes "Show off" and "Warfare" should be the combos you use the most. You can try to execute Sonya's powerup, but Moloch will most likely do his "take-a-deep- breath" move and you will take damage. After your first combo hits, you can wait a second and pull it off again. Moloch only has two choices: To block or get hit. However...while you are waiting for a second, he can sometimes still grab you. After you rushed in and pulled off your combo, you have to rush out and press block at the same time. That way, Moloch can't get you. It's VERY hard to explain... Just press b, b, b to rush out and press block right after starting that combination. ...really.....hard to explain. But hey...it works. =============================================== Well, that's it...so far. The "other combos" section will be updated for sure (you can submit combos if you want, just e-mail me. See my e-mail adress at the beginning of this guide). The Moloch-section might also get some updates. Well...I hope you liked my first guide. If it didn't help you with the game, I hope it helped you at least to kill some time reading it. Til next time.
