-------------------------------------------------------------------------- Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Fun Secrets FAQ by Edua ========================================================================== This guide can be used in GameFAQs or Gamespot. You may print it, but not sell or distribute, nor call your own... But you can print it! Yippee, yeh? Index.- Introduction [intro] Versions and updates [verup] Legend [legnd] Hello there, old pal [hello] Hey, that sounds familiar [famil] Shower tunes, Princess style [showr] Wonky's tales [wonky] Lahla, the Boo Cutie Kitty in Pianta Parlor [lhlpl] Grifty, the rooftop minstrel [grfty] Random thoughts [rndmt] Special Thanks [spect] Use the codes to find the sections that the information is in. ========================================================================== Introduction [intro] -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to the Fun Secrets FAQ. Here, I will list every easter egg possible, to the utmost accuracy of what is in the game. I'll admit, it is still incomplete when I write this introduction in Ver. 0.7. Help is appreciated! Ver. 0.7 definitely lacks the following, of the which I am accepting help for unless I can get to those parts with the new save file before the help is submitted: -Videogamin' Toad kid [famil] Things he says before Chapter 6 is completed. -Shower tunes, Princess style [showr] Help identifying the tunes Peach sings. Need a save file that is currently on Chapter 1-5's endings ( in other words, that can control Peach and direct her towards the shower ). -Wonky's tales [wonky] Suggestions on how to organize Wonky's advice ( chronologically, alphabetically, usefulness... etc. ). Ver. 0.87 still lacks the above, and I am seeing a lack of help. I am also uncertain if anyone has even read this FAQ besides the content reviewers. Upsetting, but I guess that's how it goes. Thanks for the help to some of you guys. ========================================================================== Versions and updates [verup] -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ver 0.87- Small thought about X-Naut Fortress being similar to Mega Man levels. ver 0.86- Small tid-bit about Tayce T. and Zess T. added. ver 0.85- A new cameo has been found! ver 0.84- 1 song has been identified. ver 0.83- Jerry Chifari pointed out a lot of things. Some are still unfinished, as you can see above. Oii. ver 0.82- Some stuff, but mainly a dumb stroke of luck allowed me to figure out what the screen in Grodus's room is! ver 0.81- Re-spell-checked. Erh... Ver 0.8 - The guide was spell-checked and attempted to be realigned. Also, some minor notes were added. Ver 0.7 - The guide was submitted to GameFAQs... and accepted! ========================================================================== Legend [legnd] -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Noun=Noun The name on the left was the previous name, or the predecesor of the new name. It can also be the name of a specific NPC, like Luigi's partners. Noun^ Means the character was changed majorly, not just in appearance. ========================================================================== Hello there, old pal [hello] -------------------------------------------------------------------------- There are certain events where you will see your pals from previous games. I will list these in the order they appear/can be noticed in-game, along with their origin. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -Narrator The disembodied voice begins to narrate the story of the Thousand-Year Door to you. Same voice that narrates the chapters. He's from, hm... I'm almost sure the narrator exists since Super Mario World. He narrated every time you blew up a castle and saved an egg. 'course, he actually reacts to Bowser and Kammy in Paper Mario, what with Kammy scotch-taped to the book he's reading. That's the first time that the narrator reads from a book. And now's the second. Onward! -Parakarry He's from Paper Mario. True to his profession, he delivers Peach's letter to the Bros.' house. One could guess that he also delivers the letter from the Waffle Kingdom to Luigi. -Luigi Duh. He's been with Mario since Mario Bros. for the Nes. He goes on his own adventure during the game, and you can spot him in Rogueport and chat about them. You can also talk to his partners and see what THEY have to say about it... His full name should be Luigi Mario, since they're the Mario Bros., right? -Toadsworth Let me sum it up : Mild annoyance from Mario Sunshine. Seriously. He's been cameo happy ever since, and has practically replaced Toad. Still, I guess he at least looks different that the rest of the 'shroom guys, unlike Toad himself. Toadsworth dates Zess T. ( I can only imagine T. stands for Toad, like K. stands for Koopa ) during the third chapter of your story. -Merlon, Merluvlee, Merlee, Chet Rippo Why put these all together? They all look practically the same, and serve the same purposes they did in the first Paper Mario : Upgrade partners, give hints, power you up during battles and upgrade stats at the cost of other stats, respectively. Sure, you won't have access to Merlee and Chet for a while ( Chapter 2 and Chapter 5, respectively ), but they're there. They DID get revamped, though, so they all look better. Chet, however, is now way different than his platypuss look-a-like self before. -Thwomp You only see one Thwomp in the whole game. It's in Shhwonk Fortress, and he holds a quiz made up of 7 questions in total, but 5 questions are all you need to answer right. of course, you see a mechanical Thwomp in the X-Naut's fortress, but there haven't been any mechanical Thromps before, so I don't think it counts... -Kolorado('s father) Inside Hooktail's castle, you will find out that Kolorado's dad died. He holds a letter adressing how he's proud of him, and that the dragon is bothered by crickets. One must wonder if Kolorado is originary from Petalburg... Also, Dr. Frankly is Kolorado's teacher when it comes to archeology. -Toadette You'll see her each time you get new boots and hammers. She cameos from Mario Kart:Double Dash. I guess Toad really DID get replaced by Toadsworth. For good... Perhaps? -Yoshi egg The Yoshi Egg is a cameo itself, even if the content is one of a kind... Well, technically, multicolored Yoshi eggs are rare, yeah, but it has the same shape, right? The newborn Yoshi looks mo-hawkish and has pants, which makes it the fourth version of a Yoshi new-born ( first being from Super Mario World, second being from Tetris Attack ( slightly evolved from the original ) and the third being Yoshi's Story's ( which looked grown, yet sounded... squeakier. Also, Black and White yoshies were introduced ). -Hamma's grandfather Hamma is the grandchild of a Hammer Bro. in world 7-1 of the Super Mario Bros. His hammer is said to be his grandfather's, so therefore, that's an old, old hammer. -Whacka Lovable, whackable, Whacka Bump-producing Whacka is back from Paper Mario. Poor thing can still become extinct...-er. -Jr. Troopa This... is a surprisingly hard one. In the upper left corner of the photo attached to the "The Real Zip Toad: !" e-mail, is this little guy, in his spike-hatted and bat-winged form, just... flying, really. It's a really nice cameo, since this guy was a really persistant and recurrent rival in the first Paper Mario! ( Think Croco from SMRPG:LOT7S ) -Kolorado, Moustafa, Buzzar They're all from the first Paper Mario, and are all mentioned in Lumpy's journal. -Bow and Bootler After you beat the game, save. You can see 'em again in Poshley heights, near the Sanctum. They're from the first Paper Mario. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ========================================================================== Hey, that sounds familiar [famil] -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Places and species and objects, oh my. These may or may not physically appear in the game, but are at least mentioned. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -Mario and Luigi's house This place has so many versions, it's not funny. It's first appearance was technically Super Mario Bros. 2, in the ending where you realize Mario was dreaming of the adventures in Subcon ( though Subcon is supposedly a place in dreams or something, so it all really happened, just that it doesn't really affect Mario directly, unless if he had lost, he and the others would've dreamt forever? ). But you don't actually get to see its exterior until Super Mario RPG, which presents the first version of it. The second version, re-used here, is presented in Paper Mario. And the third was the one in Mario & Luigi, where it actually had a *gasp* bathroom. How's THAT for home decorating, and re-decorating? -The Plot, we meet again Seriously. Letters + Princess Peach = Trouble. It's been true since Super Mario Bros. 3, and it's been re-iterated since Super Mario World and Super Mario 64... then again in Paper Mario... It's like, rinse and repeat. At least we got a moment of relief during Super Mario RPG, Mario Sunshine and Mario & Luigi, which have no letters involved. Either you get to witness the crime firsthand during the first two, or get a distressed Toad to drop in unannounced during your shower. Heck, Luigi's Mansion has Mario send his bro a letter. So, letters in general, or message blocks ( Super Mario World ) are bad news. Even Peach and Bowser, during the Chapter 1 epilogue events, point out the obviousity of this matter, what with "I can't believe I've been kidnapped. Again." and "Who would do something like that? Besides me?" respectively. -That voice, could it be? Yes. Mario makes noises with his mouth, and actually says "Oh yea" from time to time. How is this a cameo? He didn't have a voice until Yoshi's Island, also known as Super Mario World 2 : And he was a BABY back then. Him having a voice is always a cameo to me. All three main characters make voice sounds, though sometimes they don't really say anything. -The Great Sea Perhaps not really a cameo, but the sea's appearance... it's familiar, isn't it...? It reminds me of Wind Waker's sea. In fact, that was the first thing I thought when I saw it for the first time. Heck, the part where the title shows when you start a new game? Total Wind Waker ripoff. -All ye original, my foes, my neutral You'll see a bunch of characters that are really old, like these. Maybe they'll look new, cool, or have clothes or something. Maybe they'll look plum ordinary. Here's a list of the first appearances in NPC mode, and one of those that you get to fight. ************************************************************************** NPCs Parakarry Luigi Toads Bob-ombs Goombas Piantas Toadsworth Doogans Nomadimice=Mice Bean beans Bandits Merlon Merluvlee Koopas Bub-ulbs Princess Peach Toadstool Bowser^ Koopatrols Hammer Bros. Heart and Flower points are technically cameos from Super Mario RPG... and so is star power, sort of. -Action Command, aka the Art of Timed Hits Sure, action command can now be considered a cameo, what with the addition of an audience, and Stylish moves. You'll need a lot more timing now that you have to worry about pleasing a crowd AND doing damage. If you hadn't guessed, Action Command is about damage. Stylish-whatever is not. If it was, then you could "Stylishly" defend. Oh, about that, you can also do damage to attackers if you excel at timing by pressing B, which is sort of a Mario & Luigi cameo. ... Even though it isn't introduced in-game yet, you can use both Action and Stylish commands in the first battle. ( stylish commands won't help since there's no audience until Frankly teaches you about star power ). (From SMRPG) -Unfriendly tropical buddies Piantas are back from Mario Sunshine, and now they're your friendly local mafia and Vegas-like dealers! You'll first see two goons beat up on two bandits. You'll be seeing them fight each other for no real reason for a while, really, so get used to chuckling at 'em. -The Cook Okay, meet Tayce T.'s opposite, Zess T. Yes, she's the exact opposite. She's only similar in the fact she needs a cookbook to cook two items, and before that, needs an object ( not a frying pan, but a contact lens ) before she even cooks, or gets out of your way. What a brat. I should point out the return of a few recipes from Paper Mario for similar effect: ************************************************************************** Coco Pop=Coco Candy: Cake Mix + Coconut Egg Missile=Egg Bomb: Mystic Egg + Fire Flower Electro Pop: Cake Mix + Volt Shroom Fire Pop: Cake Mix + Fire Flower Fried Egg: Mystic Egg Honey Candy: Honey Syrup + Cake Mix Honey Shroom: Honey Syrup + Mushroom Honey Super: Honey Syrup + Super Shroom Honey Ultra: Honey Syrup + Ultra Shroom Jelly Pop=Jelly Candy: Jammin' Jelly + Cake Mix Jelly Shroom: Jammin' Jelly + Mushroom Jelly Super: Jammin' Jelly + Super Shroom Jelly Ultra: Jammin' Jelly + Ultra Shroom Koopa Tea: Turtley Leaf Koopasta: Turtley Leaf + Fresh Pasta Maple Shroom: Maple Syrup + Mushroom Maple Super: Maple Syrup + Super Shroom Maple Ultra: Maple Syrup + Ultra Shroom Cake=Mousse Cake: Cake Mix Shroom Cake: Mushroom + Cake Mix Sweet Shroom=Shroom Crepe: Cake Mix + Ultra Shroom Fried Shroom=Shroom Fry: Mushroom Hot Shroom=Shroom Roast: Life Shroom Shroom Steak: Ultra Shroom Spaghetti: Fresh Pasta Spicy Soup: Fire Flower Yoshi Cookie=Zess Cookie: Cake Mix + Mystic Egg Deluxe Feast=Zess Deluze: Healthy Salad + Shroom Steak Bland Meal=Zess Dinner: Healthy Salad + Shroom Fry Yummy Meal=Zess Special: Whacka Bump ************************************************************************** Psst. They're also sisters if you figure from Wonka's advice. -Audience exclusive troublemakers Believe it or not, you may notice Shy Guys in the audience. You may think you will fight Shy Guys later. Well, you're wrong. BUT Shy Guys are the only kind of audience member that will actually hop on stage and exit stage left or stage right... And cause a little havoc here or there. It's not always your fault that the stage seems to be falling apart, at least! -Bean bean and a drink An old man from the Beanbean Kingdom of Mario & Luigi runs a Chuckola Bar in the Inn. Both the species, Bean beans, and the Chuckola Cola are cameos from the game. Who'd of thought? You can find another in Glitzville. It's been confirmed that the bartender in Club 64 from Paper Mario is just a Toad, not a Beanbean... Though he's 'dressed' the same, glasses and 'stache and all. Guess it's some sort of uniform. -Badgies Almost all of the badges from the first Paper Mario return in this game, plus new ones, and some that are just for fun. Also signals the first actual use in-game that benefits, out of badges that use 0 BP. -Control Peach separately, again? Yeah, last Paper Mario switched between Mario and Peach at the end of each chapter, too. So that's sort of a cameo. -Bowser's pad Bowsie's castle has had almost as many make-overs as Mario's. Here we see a different incarnation. I am guessing that the Bowser head is buried in the lava, behind the path, or something. Yeah. I mean, they left Mario's house intact from the first Paper Mario... why not the castle, too...? You know, besides the whole Star Rod practically blew up the place issue. I'm just glad they returned it to Star Haven. Who knows if Kirby drops by there, needing a spare, eh? -Clown Copter, away! Yay, this thing cameos all the way from Super Mario World, then Super Mario RPG, and then Paper Mario. It appears in Mario & Luigi, sadly to say there are no sprites of it, however, which is what threw me off. -Videogamin' Toad kid A Toad child in Petal Meadows talks about videogames. Come back after a chapter to hear him say something different. ************************************************************************** After Chapter 6: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "I've been playing "Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door" like crazy lately... I wasn't sure at first... But that game is AWESOME! I just beat it! Every chapter! Totally cool ending! I loved it. So worth the money! Think there'll be a sequel? If not, I hope they make a Paper Luigi game. Yeah! I bet that'd be awesome, too..." ************************************************************************** -Mailbox SP You could've checked your gear a long while earlier, but I just felt like waiting until Mario himself held it out and gave Goombella a chance to notice it. It's a silver Gameboy Advance SP. Notice the lack of a wireless adapter. I'm jealous. Aren't you? Oh, and all tunes you hear when mailed are from previous Mario games, and you'll hear different ones throughout the game. ************************************************************************** Misc/Spam mail : The short tune you hear when you hit the message block in Super Mario World's beginning area. Peach's mail : The tune from Super Mario World's title screen. Anonymous mail : The tune from Super Mario Bros. 3's 6th world, Iced Land. ************************************************************************** -Re-decorated Playroom, with Retro attachment The Pianta Parlor is practically the Playroom from Paper Mario. The scoreboard inside is the original type of Game Boy! -Fungi in uniform The train Toads all look like the Koopa Bros. disguised from Paper Mario, but don't worry. They're naturally like that. -Where've I seen that blimp before? The Cheep-Cheep Blimp is a semi-cameo, for it is a revamped version of the blimp that once appeared and got popped in Super Mario Kart with corks from various fizzed up bottles! -Is there a train in every game or something? The Excess Express is the third time a train appears in a Mario RPG. A train made of clouds, driven by a Lakitu caddy appears in Super Mario RPG. Well, actually, it's the Nimbus Land bus. Oh well. In Paper Mario, there are 2 trains : The Toad Town Train takes you to Mt. Rugged, and the Toy Train takes you to the different stations in the Shy Guy's Toy Box. -Retro compy screen? When you control Peach so that she may steal a disk, then upload it for TEC, look closely at the screen. It looks like a REALLY old Mario Bros. game, where Mario and Luigi look like rectangles that are red and green, respectively. Makes you wonder if the X-Nauts are, like, Mario Bros. fans, huh? But really, the thing looks like if it came out of a horrible Atari port. Oh well. I guess that's why they never recognize Mario when they see him, perhaps? "Hey, that ain't a rectangle..." UPDATE: On a stroke of dumb luck, I figured out that the screen is a blue version of the Famicon Disk System's BIOS! I found this out while checking stuff in http://www.classicgaming.com/tmk/fds.shtml. -Greetings from Herringway! Most of the penguins in Poshley Heights will make references to Shiver City, the place where this type of penguins originated from in the first Paper Mario. -Super Lumpy, the Ratooey who aimed for oil! How is this a cameo? It's all in the areas from the original Paper Mario! He kept a journal of what went on there, to boot. Sooo I'll just type it up... ************************************************************************** Part 1 The Night Before ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I'm finally off tomorrow! I've filled my pack with cheese, and I'm ready to go! My to-do list is crossed off. I owe so much to all of my investors... Not just money! The old get-rich-quick dream... but this is different. I have a reason... See, I owe it to my hometown. It's so cold there, people are constantly shivering. If I find oil and send it there, then people can use it to heat their homes. Oil will make me rich and them happy. It seems to be the perfect goal, right? I have always, always... had this dream, since I was very small. Of course, getting rich is a big part of it, too, but who doesn't want money? Money! Money! Cover me with it, please! Hahhhhhhhhhhh... Well, enough for tonight... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Part 2 The Buzzar Fiend ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Why did it have to turn out like this? I got to Toad Town by boat, then took a train to the foot of Mt. Rugged. Unfortunately, you can only get from Mt. Rugged to Dry Dry Desert on foot. And tragedy waited for me as I slogged faithfully up that winding trail... It was a huge, awful vulture! I had read about it in my travel brochures! This Buzzar accosted all travelers on Mt. Rugged! I hightailed it, but Buzzar had me in its sights. I felt a piercing jolt as its claws dug deep into my backpack. After dropping me onto a cliff, Buzzar seemed to forget me and disappear. I let out a sigh of relief, but when I touched my back, I noticed my pack was gone! My pack! In it was all my food and money to start the operation! No! That mangy Buzzar made off with everything of importance to me! All I have left is this journal, a shover to dig for oil, and my life... But perhaps living is miracle enough... or so I'd like to believe. But now... I can't turn back. I climbed down the mountain to the desert. The Dry Dry Desert sprawls out before me, bechoning dreamers and fools... I am both, and I set out with a heart full of dread... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Part 3 A Helping Hand ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I am now in a place called Dry Dry Outpost. Someone pulled me, lifeless and parched, from the merciless desert floor... It was a Koopa with a fine mustache named Kolorado. And angel in a pith helmet... He was a world-traveling adventurer-archaeologist. I told him about Buzzar... And my quest for oil... And my dreams of riches and warmth for my people... After I spoke at length, he gave me food and water. I asked him why he should be so kind, and he looked into the distance and said... "Turning one's back on an ambitious dreamer... Invites others to do the same to you, old boy. I just... I just want to believe in every dream this sad old world can muster." This guy, he still chases his own dreams, dusty dreams of archaeology. We stayed up all night discussing each other's dreams. It was great. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Part 4 A Reliable Guide ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I am now at a desert oasis. After Kolorado left, I set out from Dry Dry Outpost to find my digging point. But the desert is so wide... It's impossible to find anything without a guide. I had no idea where I was going, and my head was splitting in the heat. My throat was burning and scratchy... Was I awake? Was I asleep? I heard a voice calling to me from far away... "Hey, are you a nice guy? If you're a nice guy, then give me something nice." I didn't have the food or water I received from Kolorado. I had nothing. "Why do you lie here? If you are a nice guy, give me a nice thing, and I will help." I croaked: "All I have is... All I have is my dream..." When I next awoke, I was at this oasis. "You're awake!" I heard! There was a Squeek there in a gray head scarf. "My name is Moustafa. You had nothing to give, but I got something nice anyway!" I don't know how or why, but it seems I'd been saved by yet another stranger... "Do you need a guide? If there is somewhere to want to go, I will take you." Unbelievable! I've actually found a reliable guide. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Part 5 The Digging Point ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We're here! I'm finally at the spot where I'm supposed to dig for oil! I was told to draw a line from a blue cactus to a cactus-like rock... I went north a precise distance from the exact termination point... I ended up here, at a point between Dry Dry Ruins and the oasis... Moustafa had guided me this far with skill and bravery... He said, "You are a nice guy. Your dream will come true. Moustafa believes this." He left then, leaving me to fight this battle on my own! All I have to do is dig here until I find oil. That's all... I stocked up on lemons and limes at the oasis, so I should last a few days. I MUST find that oil! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Part 6 The Long Dig ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I am digging... for oil now, and... my hand shakes... as I write these... perhaps final... words... I have been digging... from sunup to sundown... but... still no sign of... that sweet crude... Maybe... I've just picked... a dry spot... in this cursed spot... in this cursed desert... But... I'm sure this... is where Merluvlee... told me to dig... Yes... I'm sure of it... There's... no more... food... or... water... and even my hopes... have dwindled... to nothing... Ahhh... this is it... my dream... dies here... with me... under these... unforgiving skies... My... dream... My... My...? Wait... no... this is not it... my dream... is of something... else... yes... something else... Dig... Keep... digging... I... must... keep... digging... ... Arms... move... body... work... find... oil... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Part 7 The Wrap-up ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I am now on a boat back to dear Rogueport. I did it! I finally struck oil in that dry desert! I have left the day-to-day operation to my men in the the field, and now return home. It all came true... Striking it rich... Finding oil... My dream... But... somewhere along the way, this became more than just my dream. So many people have helped to make this dream happen. So many... "You had nothing to give, but I got something nice anyway!" Dear Moustafa... "I just want to believe in every dream this sad world can muster." Ah, Kolorado... People who lent me money... And gave me food... And showed me the way... So many hands reaching out to help me... I must do something for all of them! That feeling has pushed me even harder... ... I must share this feeling with the people who helped me as I struggled! I must share these words that have seared themselves into my heart: Dreams come true. -Lumpy- ************************************************************************** -Wish upon a star If you look closely at the background while on the Moon, you will see constellations... they are: ************************************************************************** Flower Stars (2) Chomp Mushroom ************************************************************************** These may have been inspired by the Kart series' Rainbow Roads' constellations. -Folding screens, jars and curtains, oh my Super Mario RPG, the first Paper Mario and this Paper Mario share this in common : You can turn into an 8-bit version of Mario. This, however, is the first time your partners turn 8-bit with you AND that you can do it again ( drop through the vent again to 8-bit-ify yourself again ). -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ========================================================================== Shower tunes, Princess style [showr] -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Each time the chapters end ( up until Chapter 5, where you see the tragic end of a character you barely knew ), you may control Peach. In the room to the left of where you usually start ( locker room with un-openable lockers ), you may take a shower, where, besides putting her hair up in a ponytail, which is a look she's used for sports games and vacations, she will hum a tune. If you have a keen ear and are a Mario fan, you may recognize a few of 'em. Here're the ones I've heard. But don't tell her I eavesdropped on her while she showered! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -Unknown tune, contribution appreciated. 7 notes. Fast. Sorta sounds like the 64 castle tune, but not quite. -Beginning of the BGM from 1-1 in Super Mario Bros. -Beginning of the music played at the Super Mario World title screen. First 6 notes. -Beginning of the music played in her castle in Super Mario 64. First 7 notes. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Contributions appreciated. I've only heard these 4 tunes. ========================================================================== Wonky's tales [wonky] -------------------------------------------------------------------------- After chapter 1, you will be able to visit Rogueport's underground. In one of the buildings, you can talk to Wonky, who will charge you 5 coins for advice. The order he tells it in is random, I believe. Once you buy it, you CAN hear it again... but it's absolutely random, even though free. Here's a list of the advice he told me, in the order I heard it. ************************************************************************** Pirate Cortez ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "About a Thousand-Years ago, there was a pirate king called Cortez on these seas. He raided this city often, striking fear into the hearts of its inhabitants... But Cortez was betrayed by one of his crew... Just before he died, he's said to have sailed off with all of his treasure. Then, even after he died, some say his spirit still protects that treasure... But, you know... That's all just hazy legend now." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Monsters' weaknesses ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "There're a lot of mean monsters in this world, but many have weaknesses. Everybody knows that fire monsters are weak against ice and vice versa... But flying monsters are weak against wind, and they tend to get dizzy easily... And sometimes machine- and cloud-monsters can be easier to freeze than most... I've even heard that it's very easy to put Piranha Plants to sleep... I'd say, try out some new things and see if you can find all monsters' weaknesses." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Cold place's secret ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "There's a pipe down here that leads to a very cold place, ol' Wonky hears... And if you jump in front of the tree to the far right of the area you come out in... Then you get something nice, supposedly. But you won't catch 'ol Wonky out in a chilly place like that, no sir!" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mysterious troops ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "I've gotten word of a strange group skulking about Rogueport recently. They wear masks and weird costumes with an "X" on the front... Talk about kooky. And they're always huddled together mumbling about some treasure. I've even heard that they unearthed some shiny stone down here! Weird..." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Horsetails ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "You've been to Petal Meadows, haven't you? Well, they have those blue- and grey-striped poles called Candy Pops all over, right? I heard that one of those will give you a Horsetail if you hit it ten times... You should go try that out sometime." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Battle techniques ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "I hear the best way to fill your battle crowd up is to succeed at Action Commands. Especially when you succeed at several in a row. Hoo! I hear THAT'S great! Also, beating enemies quickly and striking first can build your crowd, too. That might be good to remember." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Lahla's private life ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "You know Lahla, the cute receptionist at the Pianta Parlor? She never gets too personal from beyond those iron bars, because it's, like, buisness... But if you get in there and talk with her, she's a totally different person! You should get in there and see how good your game is, Mr. Popular!" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ What's hidden below ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Ol' Wonky just got this juicy bit of info recently... You know that small hole down here that only a little critter can get through? Well, you just head out away from the wall there... And when you can't go any further, jump to get something good. If you see that hole, you should give it a try..." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Creepy Steeple's secret ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "There's a wacky old place called Creepy Steeple somewhere in this land... And if you jump on the fourth step from the top, ol' Wonky hears you get a good thing. I don't know how useful that is, but hey, it's worth a shot." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Chet Rippo ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "There's a weird guy named Cher Rippo who lives down here somewhere. I hear he'll lower one stat and raise another for you if you want. And he can even power down one of your partners to power up another... He may be spendy, but I'm sure it's worth it..." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Minstrel ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Somewhere here in Rogueport there's a minstrel by the name of Grifty. He knows all the old legends of Rogueport... And he'll tell you interesting tales you've never heard vefore, I'm pretty sure. So, if you find him, you should definitely listen to at least one." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Secret of Boggly Woods ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Deep in Boggly Woods is a spot with a bunch of tree stumps all lined up... If you jump hard on the tenth stump from the left, you'll get something good. Now I don't know what it is, but I hear it's really good." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Zess Dynamite ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "You know Zess T., right? She's the really good cook on Rogueport's main square. Well, she has a rare recipe in her repertoire caled Zess Dynamite... It's made with a Coconut Bomb and an Egg Bomb. And by the way, an Egg Bomb is made from a Fire Flower and a Mystic Egg... And a Coconut Bomb is made from a Fire Flower and a Coconut. ... And that's all I know, because Zess lost the rest of the recipe somewhere... It was written down and she lost it! What a tragedy! It sure would be cool if she could make it, though..." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Charmer ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "You know, there's a charmer named Merlee down here somewhere... If you get her to charm you, you'll get good stuff in battle. Not only that, but she's a total babe... Ol' Wonky would LOVE to get a date with her! I'm serious. You have to check her out sometime." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Zess T.'s sister ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "About that Zess T. near Rogueport's main square... I've heard her sister is a really good cook as well. She married and moved away a long time ago, but I'd love to try her cooking..." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ What's behind the sign ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "There's a billboard in front of the shop in town with all kinds of stuff written on it... Well, some folks like to write graffiti on the back of the message board, you know. There's all kinds of good stuff there, especially for an info guy like ol' Wonky. You should give it a gander next time." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The incident I saw ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "So I saw this really cute girl in a pink dress walking around town a while back. She was pretty enough to be a princess, I tell ya! She hung around town for a little while after buying something from that old lady. Then she got nabbed in a back alley by a bunch of suspicious guys in white suits! I'm pretty sure I'm the only person who saw that, though. Ol' Wonky was scared! Well... I guess it's neither here nor there... People get kidnapped, whatever. Still, just knowing what's going on in the streets can be helpful sometimes." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Grubba from Glitzville ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "So about that Grubba in Glitzville... He went from a mediocre fighter to the ruler of Glitzville in a matter of years. And there's a rumor that it was all because he found a glittering gem somewhere. I don't know what kind of stone it was, but it must've been a nice good-luck charm. Then again, I heard he hasn't been seen recently around Glitzville, so who knows?" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mystic bag ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "You know about the Pit of 100 Trials down here, right? Well, somewhere down there is an item called a Strange Sack. This thing is great. If you've got it, you can hold up to 20 items! And you know what that means, my good friend... Easy adventuring! No adventurer should be without one, take it from ol' Wonky!" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Lucky Punies ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "There's a place called Boggly Woods somewhere in this world... And there are small beasts named Punies who live there. Ol' Wonky hears that anyone who sees a Puni will have fortune visited upon them... Some people go to Boggly Woods just to catch a glimpse of a lucky Puni..." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Finding Star Pieces ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "You've heard of Star Pieces, of course... Yes, they're no less than pieces of actual stars that have fallen to earth... They're so pretty and shiny that anyone who stumbles on one turns into a collector. If you want to find some, just check out all the nooks of each area you visit. They always seem to be slightly hidden, know what I mean?" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Amazy Dayzees ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "I've heard tales of an Amazy Dayzee, a truly rare breed among Dayzees... They're worth oodles of Star Points, but they're timid and tend to run away fast. Still, I bet if you kept visiting the same area, you could meet one again..." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Southern isle Whacka ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "There's a rare creature called a Whacka on the southern isle. Yeah, and if you whack him, he drops this great little thing called a Whacka Bump. The thing is, people have been whacking the Whackas to get Whacka Bumps... And now, only one remains that hasn't been whacked to extinction. Isn't that sad?" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Big door ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Well, you know, there's a really big door down here. I've only seen it once myself, but... If there really is some legendary treasure down here, it's behind that door... Yeah, when I saw it, I got the feeling there was bad stuff going down in there... In fact, I've been too heebie-jeebied to get near that door ever since..." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Trouble Center ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "There's a place called the Trouble Center on the east side of Rogueport. People who need help write little notes on the board in there... And if you help them out, they give you a reward of some sort. Ol' Wonky hears that some of those rewards are pretty tasty, my friend!" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Z Button ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Hey, ol' Wonky just heard something kind of helpful. If you press Z when you're talking to someone, you go back to what they said last. I'm sure that could be handy in a pinch!" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Legend of Rogueport ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "You've heard about the legendary treasure hidden beneath Rogueport, right? Apparently it's the vast fortune of that ancient, forgotten civilization... Most people think that's just a silly old myth now, of course. But not Wonky! According to my sources, it's the real deal. Huh? Who are my sources? Well, I can't really say, can I? That, my friend, is what's called a trade secret!" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Yoshi colors ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Way, way down to the south is an island where lots of Yoshis live. And Yoshis are born form eggs, as everyone knows... But a Yoshi's color depends on its egg conditions right before hatching. So it's always a surprise to see what comes out. ... Know what I mean? Your Youshi has a rather nice color, by the way. I'm sure he'll grow up to be a fine Yoshi, yup." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Spin panels ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Do you know about these spin panels scattered around the world? When you Spin-Jump a spin panel... It bumps a Star Piece right out of the ground! Score! Problem is, they look just like regular flooring, so it's hard to tell. There's actually one right in front of me, so give it a shot, why don't you?" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Strange ones ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "About Merlon on the east side of Rogueport and Merluvlee underground... Ol' Wonky hears they're from a strange tribe that names people by profession. So, for example, if someone did the same work as Merlon, they'd have the same name... So there could be Merlons all over. Don't you find that strange? Wonky does!" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Professor Frankly's garbage ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "There's a kingly old teacher named Frankly who lives on Rogueport's east side... And if you check his garbage--when he has some-- I hear you can learn stuff. I don't know what's in there, but if his bin has trash in it, check it. I've even heard there are notes about terrifying monsters in there..." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Striking first ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Don't you love it when you strike first on the field and get that first attack in? If you use a Spin Jump or Bobbery's Bomb attack to strike first... Then your first attack will have more power than just a jump or hammer move, see? It's not a big thing, but it's worth remembering!" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Pianta Parlor ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "There's a game center on the west side of Rogueport run by Don Pianta. There's a hidden game there that few people know about... Only members are allowed to play this special game. Well, that's what ol' Wonky hears. If you want to try it, you'll have to find a Member's Card somewhere..." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Omelette Plate ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "The most delicious thing ol' Wonky has ever eaten is an Omelette Plate... I remember having it at the hotel at Poshley Heights. It was made by that chef of legend, Maitre Delish... I believe it was made with a Mushroom and a Mystic Egg. Oh, just one more bite... I hear one can actually find that Mystic Egg near the Boggly Woods... It seems the Punies are the only ones who know where to find them..." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ How to save money ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Did you notice that you can only carry up to 999 coins? Well, if you ever want to collect more... You should buy Gold Bars at the shop near here... And then store them at the shop, where you can convert them back to coins anytime. They may sell for slightly less than you buy them for... But it's better than losing all the coins you wouldn't be able to pick up, right?" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Final tale ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "I heard this one from my ol' grampa... It's a legend about one who will come to this town some day in the future. He will come when the sky grows dark again... Clothed in red and blue, the hero will bear seven stars and face the darkness... I don't know what that's supposed to mean, but I see that you wear red and blue. If the hero turned out to be you... Well, I guess that would be a bit much, huh?" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Southern isle secret ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Far to the south of Rogueport lies an isle... And on this isle there are three yellow blocks in a row. And if you do a Spring Jump on the second of these blocks from the bottom... I hear you'll get something good for your health. But what island could this "southern isle" be referring to, anyway?" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Couple's Cake ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "You know Zess T., in the square, I'm sure. The girl with the mean cooking talent. Well, she's got a secret recipe called the Couple's Cake. Cute name, huh? To make it, she needs a Snow Bunny and Spicy Soup... If you bring her both, she'll make it, at least that's what ol' Wonky hears. By the way, a Snow Bunny is made from a Golden Leaf and an Ice Storm... And Spicy Soup is made from a Fire Flower and a Dried Bouquet. Even so, I hear that this recipe really reminds her of her late husband... So she doesn't make it for just anybody. I wonder how she feels about you?" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Behind the Trouble Center ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "So there's that Trouble Center on Rogueport's east side, right... Well, only a few people know about the back entrance to it... Hey, I'm not saying there's anything good in there, but it may be worth a look." ************************************************************************** ========================================================================== Lahla, the Boo Cutie Kitty in Pianta Parlor [lhlpl] -------------------------------------------------------------------------- After you receive your second 'curse', you will be able to slip through the bars that should prevent you from going to the other side of the counter in Pianta Parlor. Thus, you will be able to talk to Lahla, and also tattle her with Goombella. From tattling, you will learn that both she and her sister, Peeka, who runs the Westside Goods, are ex-models. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -First chat... ************************************************************************** "Oh, my! Customers aren't allowed back here! What?!? You want to learn a little more about me? Well, I'm in charge of the parlor center, silly! I know all there is to know about this place, so if you have a question, just ask! ... You were hoping for more personal information? Uhhh... Ugh! Fine! Whatever... I'm eighteen. My favorite food is Honey Shrooms. The rest is a secret. If you get a high score in one of the mini-games, maybe I'll tell you more..." ************************************************************************** -Beat 375.14 14 in Plane Game... ************************************************************************** "Oh, my! Customers aren't allowed back here! What?!? You got a high score in one of the mini-games? Ugh! Fine! Whatever... Um... My sister Peeka works in the shop next door, and we get along REALLY well! We go shopping together whenever we get a day off. So much FUN, shopping! Peeka likes jewelry and bags and things, but those don't interest me at all. I guess maybe I could use a little more flair in my outfits, though... OK! That's enough. Maybe I'll tell you more if you get another high score." ************************************************************************** -Beat 3 15 in Paper Game... ************************************************************************** "Oh, my! Customers aren't allowed back here! What?!? You got another high score? Ugh! Fine! Whatever... Um... I really love sweets, so I ask Zess. T to bake stuff for me all the time. Ooh, and I love nothing better than a nice, sweet cake, but... Lately I've been feeling a little chunky, though... So I'm on a diet. But hey! That's a secret! Seriously! Don't tell Peeka! But that's all for now. Maybe I'll tell you more about me if you get another high score, all right?" ************************************************************************** -Beat 2:13:20 19 in Tube Game... ************************************************************************** "Oh, my! Customers aren't allowed back here! What?!? You got another high score? Ugh! Fine! Whatever... Um... The other day a customer named Arfur asked me out to dinner. But I said no... I mean, I don't even know him, right? Still, I wonder if he really likes me... I just don't get it, though. What could he like about me? I mean, really... OK, that's all for now. How embarrassing. Maybe I'll tell you more about me if you get another high score, all right?" ************************************************************************** -Beat 1:33:15 16 in Boat Game... ************************************************************************** "Oh, my! Customers aren't allowed back here! What?!? You got another high score? Ugh! Fine! Whatever... Um... My dream is to have my own place someday. I just wanna be surrounded by cakes and cute stuff all the time... And then I'd get all the people I like to hang out here... It'd be sooo great! So, I've gotta work hard now to make my dream come true. But I kind of like being a parlor kitty, too, tee-hee! OK, that's all for now! I feel silly talking about this kind of stuff. And, Mario... I hope you're not spending all your time trying to talk to little old me. Because I'm sure there are other things you're supposed to be doing, right?" ************************************************************************** -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ========================================================================== Grifty, the rooftop minstrel [grfty] -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Grifty is on the roof of Merlon's house. You will be able to reach is as soon as you have your Yoshi hatched from his egg. For 5 coins, he will tell you a story related to the town's past, and the adventures of the 4 original heroes who sealed away the demon's soul... and all that crud. Really, it's not that necessary if you keep the 'beat up every guy in my way until I save the world' attitude, but a little bit of story can captivate those whom are curious. So, as an easy solution, I will post them here. By the by, you only need to pay once to hear it as many times as you like. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Fearsome Demon ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ages ago, a city flourished here in peace and splendor. ... But it was destroyed in a single day by a demon from the dark beyond. Historians claim a great calamity befell the city, but nay...'twas a demon. The city sank below ground, and one-quarter of the old city became the demon's den. This demon put fear into the hearts of all men and sent out minions to take the land. And its den, its palace, grew rich with the treasures stolen from all over the world. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Crystal Stars ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In order to increase its already formidable power... The demon created Crystal Stars to hold the essence of the heavens. One of these stars was placed in each country to exert the demon's influence. One of the castles built to contain these stars still stands near Petal Meadows. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dragons and Dungeons ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The demon built a dungeon near its palace and filled it with terrifying monsters... All those who fell into disfavor were thrown into this dungeon to rot... Yea, and the demon also had three dragon pets: Hooktail, Gloomtail, and Bonetail. These dragons flew across the land, spreading fear and sorrow over all. Even now, the mere mention of a dragon is enough to give some the terrors... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Hero Who Arose ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ One day, there came a hero who could vanquish the fell demon. The young Toad of from Petal Meadows was strong of arm, but shy of voice... All those around the boy teased him endlessly about the way he spoke. But when the demon cast his fearful gaze across the lands and reached out... The young Toad used his strength and honor to defend his people. And he became a hero to all, despite his odd voice. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Wise Goomba ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ There was a wise Goomba from Boggly Woods gifted in knowledge of the world. When beasts rose to take the woods, this knowledge helped the people fight them. And this Goomba, who knew the way every monster would attack... She began to think of a way to banish all monsters from the land... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Stalwart Koopa ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A Koopa who traveled the world alone learned of the darkness covering the land... He went alone whenever evil dwelt, and banished it with shell and sheer bravado. The monsters grew to fear this scar-riddled Koopa who thwarted them at every turn. But the brave Koopa was finally taken in a trap set for him by the monsters. But then, a Boo who fought with the monsters came and used her magic to free him. The brave Koopa's spirit had melted the heart of the cold Boo lass... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Four Heroes ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Boo used her powerful magic to learn more about the evil they faced... "We cannot destroy this darkness alone," she decided, her face a grim mask. "We need the Toad hero of Petal Meadows and the wise Goomba of Boggly Woods." The Boo's magic drew the four heroes together to send the demon from the world. And so, the four heroes finally set out for the Palace of Shadow... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Duel With the Demon ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The power of the world-devouring demon was greater than any could imagine... But the wise Goomba soon realized that this was the power of the Crystal Stars... She thought of a way to take the stars and use them against the demon. She told the other heroes her plan and set it in motion, banishing their fears. The Boo's magic and the Toad's strength created a gap in the demon's defenses... At that moment, the brave Koopa seized the stars... And succeeded in badly damaging the demon... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Demon Sealed Within ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ But even the brave Koopa's stroke was not enough to end the demon's reign... The wise Goomba thought of another use for the Crystal Stars in that dire hour... She suggested sealing the demon forever with the Crystal Stars. All agreed. The heroes matched their strengths with the power of the Crystal Stars... And they successfully sealed the demon's soul within the deepest part of the palace. Together, they made it so that only all seven stars could break the seal... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Demon's Curse ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The four heroes thought they had sealed away the demon and all of its powers... But the demon used a tiny opening before the seal was complete to curse them all. While holding the Crystal Stars, they'd feel nothing, but when they let them go... A black box would appear to seal their souls within. The four heroes traveled the world, scattering the stars so the seal would remain. But the last four stars each carried the curse, which claimed each hero... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Great Tree and Punies ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The hiding places of many of the Crystal Stars have now faded into legend. But some say the wise Goomba hid one in the Great Tree. At that time, many monsters wandered in the nearby Boggly Woods. The tiny Punies were always tormented by their fierce appetites, it was said. Pitying them, the Goomba hollowsed out the Great Tree for the Punies to live in. The Punies were so grateful that they swore to protect the Crystal Star there... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Boo Heroine's Last Days ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Once the Boo heroine hid her star in a steeple, she was trapped in the nearby town... Some say the Crystal Star lies in that steeple still... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Pirate King Cortez ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Koopa hero went to a southern isle to hide his star where none would find it. But the Koopa was so tired from his journey that the pirate Cortez stole it easily. In that very instant, the brave Koopa was trapped in an inescapable chest. But Cortez did not realize the power of the star and lost it among his treasures... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Toad Hero's Final Days ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The strong Toad held his star and continued his arduous journey. But eventually the miles took their toll upon him, and he collapsed. A traveling healer happened by and saved his life... But the Toad knew his fate was to be trapped in the box when the star was gone... So he asked this healer to hide the star in a secret place known to no one... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ All Becomes Legend ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ After the demon was sealed within the Palace of Shadow... Many refused to come near that place of terror. But as the years passed, entire generations forgot... And the penniless and the immoral began to congregate in this once-barren place... This place soon became a populous harbor, the town of Roueport... And some even began to say that the underground city held a legendary treasure. But they were unaware that the demon slept beneath them still... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Magical Map ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The heroes knew that the seal might not last forever... And they sought to make the Crystal Stars available to one who might need them... So, before going to their individual dooms, they made a map to all the stars. And to prevent an evil force form misusing the map... They placed it in a box that could only be opened by the pure of heart. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ========================================================================== Random thoughts [rndmt] -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Random things I think of that aren't related to anything in particular, or that aren't really cameos, or that... didn't appear. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -No music, no matter how long you keep the Prologue or Chapter screens up. Except for Chapter 5, where you get to hear the Excess Express music... But no Super Mario World tune or anything. Ah well. -You can't see the blimp, or some other objects, from Mario's first person view when he wakes up on the ship that first takes him to Rogueport, but you can see it while reading Peach's letter. -Doogan folk look like something out of Super Mario World, but... they're not. They're new. Actually... Rowf was a Doogan. Remember? Rowf's badge shop? Paper Mario? -Hooktail reminds me of Valoo from Wind Waker... They both have hooktails, do they not...? -Luigi gets it easy : He doesn't have to travel back into the sewers to check his compass when he gets a new piece. Don't you just hate doing that? -Ms. Mowz's mask reminds me of Sailor V's, from Sailor Moon, before she's Sailor Venus. Yeah. Random. -... The Rock. The Rawk. You make the connection. -Is it possible to fight Sir Swoop in the Glitz Pit? Or Prince Mush? I'm curious about that... Wonder if anyone managed to do that. Oh, and, Jolene and the "mystery woman" in the juice shop are one and the same... unless, like, Prince Mush's "training" involves trading places with Jolene from time to time... -Pennington is the name of a character in an Agatha Christie Poirot novel, but acts like Sherlock Holmes to the extent that he parodies his phrase: "Elementary, my dear Watson" with "Rudimentary, my dear Luigi". -Mario torments his brother shamelessly, as you can see when completing the "I wanna meet Luigi!" trouble. This more open brotherly rivalry is shown since Mario Power Tennis ( Luigi's winning cutscene involves Mario stomping his foot on purpose, leaving Luigi confused as to why Mario congratulates AND stomps his foot )... And actually seems to have existed ever since Luigi's Mansion's ending, where Mario is forced out the, apparently, wrong end of E. Gadd's portrait-object machine, leaving Mario dazed and his head stuck through a metal opening too narrow for it... and Luigi proceeds to laugh so hard he cries. This rivalry could also have started since Mario Bros., of course. -I have gotten 41 e-mails after the end... So I'm guessing that's the max. -Vivian's male in the Japanese version of the game.
