From what I understand by my research online, this is a copy of the Mega Drive version of the game. Any indications between the Mega Drive version and the GameGear version will be noted where they are appropriate, and this guide is equally usable by those playing either version of the game. =============================================================================== [TOC] CHAPTER 00: Table of Contents [TOC] =============================================================================== This FAQ now contains the commonly-used "Quick Find" catalog. Next to each section of the guide contains a three-letter code. Here's what I've done: ALTERATIONS - Another new year, another change to the Copyright Information section that involves the year, among other things, including the fact that there is no Chapter 18 in this guide. Oops. Just one con of copying and pasting. - Changes have been made to the Author Contact section. - I changed the Final Word a little bit. ========================================================== October 4, 2003 -- Version 2.0 ========================================================== Well, I made a couple of quick revisions to this guide. ALTERATIONS - I suppose this isn't too important, but I changed the format of the guide, so it is now done on WordPad instead of Word. - Changes have been made to the Copyright Information section. ========================================================== June 28, 2003 -- Version 1.0 ========================================================== Hot off the press! =============================================================================== [CHM] CHAPTER 03: Characters [CHM] =============================================================================== =========================================================== SONIC THE HEDGEHOG =========================================================== A resident of South Island, a speed demon, and a guy with a major chili dog obsession, Sonic the Hedgehog has evolved into one of the most loved video game mascots of our time. When one mentions "Sega," one can't help but think of the blue, spiky-haired insectivore. ========================================================== DR. IVO ROBOTNIK ========================================================== Also known as Dr. Eggman, Robotnik is the definition of evil dudes who need to hit a Stairmaster. The red suit and fiery mustache define this guy, but nothing seems more prominent than the Egg-O-Matic, his transport device used to hover throughout the universe. ========================================================== SOUTH ISLAND INHABITANTS ========================================================== Instead of the standard "Damsel-in-Distress" theme found in many games in this genre (*cough* Mario *cough*), Sonic must rescue the residents of this island. Either the gravity level must be really high or there's a lack of nutrition among the locals, but they are all really short. =============================================================================== [ITM] CHAPTER 04: Items [ITM] =============================================================================== ========================================================== ITEM(S) || USE(S) ========================================================== | Power Rings || Sonic's life depends on | | || these shiny, metallic | | || rings. As long as you | | || have one ring when hit by | | || an enemy's attack, or if | | || you fall on spikes, you | | || will not die. For now, here's some brief descriptions of the six zones. Each zone has three acts. In each act, Sonic has ten minutes to race to the end, pass all the obstacles, and collect as many rings as possible. Pass as many arrow monitors as possible, for if Sonic should die, he would restart at the last-broken arrow monitor rather than at the beginning. Third acts consist of a short run through the act, followed by a boss battle and nothing more. =========================================================== ZONE 01: Green Hill =========================================================== Yes sir, there's only one hill. It is either a really large hill or a rather small island. Anyway, this is the tutorial zone of the game. There are three acts in each zone. At the end of the final act, there will be a boss, one of Robotnik's fantastic creations. Located in a valley of South Island, the main hazards are spikes, which are mainly at the bottom of the zone floor, and falling into the abyss. If you see a yellow warning sign (MD only), don't move; a floating platform will come to bring you across the spikes or emptiness. =========================================================== ZONE 02: Bridge =========================================================== Surprise, surprise; this zone takes place on bridges. With high cliffs and river valleys, this level has some depth, along with one of the coolest 8-Bit songs in the Sonic franchise. In Act Two, the screen moves automatically, so make it a priority not to travel too far ahead. You may fall or run into a Badnik. =========================================================== ZONE 03: Jungle =========================================================== Not quite a carnival zone, but pretty close. This jungle is full of rivers and springs. When you see a log in a river, jump on it, and use the D-Pad to maneuver below the fish. Act Two consists of a long climb up levitating platforms decorating a waterfall, so you might want to become accustomed to Sonic's jumping. =========================================================== ZONE 04: Labyrinth =========================================================== The first underwater zone made in history of the GameGear/Mega Drive series. Apparently, an ancient civilization got flooded. The music is relaxing in this world, but you must be alert at all times; this zone is torture if you do not have enough skill. Patience is a virtue, remember. White lance-spikes will hurt you. Watch for levers and hit them quickly, because you can survive about 30 seconds without air, even with invincibility. Take care. ========================================================== ZONE 05: Scrap Brain ========================================================== The first act of this game is rather easy; you should finish it in about a minute. The flamethrowers can easily be avoided simply by running regularly. Act Two is a completely different story. A labyrinth (What? Didn't we already have one?) of booby traps, levers, and electric machinery await you. Take it slowly, and always take the upper path whenever possible. ========================================================== ZONE 06: Sky Base ========================================================== An original zone in a GameGear game that will become a series staple: the aerial fortress. Electricity powers this big boy, and it will harm you if you come in contact with some conduits. They're harmless until they glow, however. Act Two has no rings, so watch out: huge artillery awaits you. Obviously, Robotnik no longer plays Mr. Nice Guy in this zone. Pure challenge will stun beginners. =============================================================================== [EMR] CHAPTER 07: The Chaos Emeralds [EMR] =============================================================================== The Chaos Emeralds are the things that make the world go 'round... or at least the world of Sonic the Hedgehog. There are six of them, each of a different color, and Robotnik wants these badly. You find them throughout each zone. Locations of the emeralds will come in a later version. =============================================================================== [SPC] CHAPTER 08: Special Stages [SPC] =============================================================================== Special Stages have a unique twist on them in this game. Like other games, you need to collect fifty rings (and be in possession of when you complete an act) in order to access this stage. For one thing, there's a two minute time limit. In a "Spring Yard Zone"-esque stage, you use giant springs to bounce up and collect as many rings as possible. One "CONT" Monitor exists in each stage; collecting this gains you, shockingly, a continue. After your first five or six stages, the time limit is halved. =============================================================================== [BDN] CHAPTER 09: Badniks [BDN] =============================================================================== There are twelve different Badniks, but I do not know the names. Therefore, I shall use the names from the Genesis game. ===================================================================== NAMED BADNIKS ===================================================================== .-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-. | Ball Hog | '-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-' Location:-------------------------------------- Scrap Brain Description:------------------------------------ A pink pig Attack:------------------------------ Launching Projectiles .-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-. | Burrobot | '-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-' Location:---------------------------------------- Labyrinth Description:----------------- A red and blue drilling robot Attack:------------------------------------- Roaming Around .-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-. | Buzz Bomber | '-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-' Locations:------------------------------ Green Hill; Bridge Description:---------------------------------- A red hornet Attack:------------------------------ Launching Projectiles .-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-. | Caterkiller | '-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-' Locations:------------------------------------- Scrap Brain Description:---------------------------- A pink caterpillar Attack:------------------------------------- Roaming Around .-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-. | Chopper | '-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-' Locations:---------------------- Green Hill; Bridge; Jungle Description:--------------------------------- A red piranha Attack:-------------------------------------------- Jumping .-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-. | Crabmeat | '-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-' Locations:---------------------- Green Hill; Bridge; Jungle Description:---------------------------- A red and tan crab Attack:------------------------------ Launching Projectiles .-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-. | Jaws | '-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-' Location:---------------------------------------- Labyrinth Description:---------------------------------- A pink shark Attack:------------------------------------- Roaming Around .-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-. | Moto Bug | '-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-' Location:--------------------------------------- Green Hill Description:------------------------- A red wheeled ladybug Attack:------------------------------------- Roaming Around .-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-. | Newtron | '-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-' Location:--------------------------------------- Green Hill Description:----------------- A green newt with yellow eyes Attacks:----------------- Launching Projectiles; Relocating ===================================================================== UNNAMED BADNIKS ===================================================================== There are three Badniks without names. You have wanted to cheat in almost any video game to come out. Fortunately, we have a section for you special people. Here it is. Game Genie codes coming soon. ========================================================== IGN CODES ========================================================== EXTRA LIFE (ANY LEVEL) At the end of any level, if you have less than 50 rings and therefore cannot get to the bonus level, run through the turnstile and then stop and jump straight into the air. If the turnstile is off the screen when it stops spinning, when you come down it should show a picture of Sonic and therefore give you an extra life. EXTRA LIFE (LEVEL ONE) To get an extra life at the beginning of the game, walk (don't run) down the first ramp. And after you have walked over the edge of the ramp find the second tree. Go to it and jump. An extra life power-up will fall! LEVEL SELECT When you see tails running press Start + Button 1 and 2. Also rotate the directional pad. When you hear the coin sound press start. =========================================================== DIFFERENCES =========================================================== There are several differences between the GameGear and Mega Drive versions of the game, including the following: - The Mega Drive has a higher screen resolution, making it easier to see your surroundings. - The GameGear has a higher color palette. - The Special Stage has a different color scheme. - The Bridge Zone boss is fought on bridges on the Mega Drive. =============================================================================== [ACK] CHAPTER 12: Acknowledgments [ACK] =============================================================================== PEOPLE WEBSITES -- Webmasters -- GameFAQs - For hosting this FAQ - For continuing to show great -- Myself appreciation for FAQ writers such - For writing this FAQ as myself -- Rob (AU620RS@aol.com) - For being the first host of this - For informing me that hedgehogs FAQ are insectivores, not rodents -- IGN Codes - For providing the codes -- GameWinners - For providing the Game Genie codes -- Green Hill Zone - For information in the "Differences" section =============================================================================== [ATC] CHAPTER 13: Author Contact [ATC] =============================================================================== I can be reached via e-mail at the following address: cyebersurpher@hotmail.com If you wish to e-mail me about game help, please put "Sonic the Hedgehog GG" as the title of the e-mail.
