\wrDenki Blocks(GBA) FAQ/Walkthrough version 1.0.0 by Andrew Schultz Please do not reproduce this FAQ for profit without my prior consent. However, if you write a polite e-mail to me referring to me(and this FAQ) by name, then I will probably say OK. But if I ignore you that means no--and I am bad about answering e-mail. Sorry. This FAQ is not 100% complete in that you cannot see all the bonus levels. However, I have unlocked all awards. **** AD SPACE: **** My home page: http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Exhibit/2762 ================================ OUTLINE 1. INTRODUCTION 2. CONTROLS 3. WHAT I LEFT OUT SO FAR 12. VERSIONS 13. CREDITS ================================ OUTLINE 1. INTRODUCTION This FAQ is not intended to be the perfect way through everything. When necessary I will note a general way through beforehand to avoid spoilers/give you a chance to solve it with a part-hint or to avoid the chance of a ghastly typo. There is the possibility I have also wasted moves, so don't take my solutions as gospel. While it does seem you are just copying moves to win if you follow this FAQ, I've realized that even in a computer job where you seem to have a set of straightforward instructions, things go wrong on both ends--teacher and student. So you may just have to try a level twice, save with the emulator, etc. Stupid emulator tricks: 2. CONTROLS 3. ENEMY OBSTACLES 4. TRAINING SESSIONS There are thirty training sessions in Denki Blocks, in a 5x6 rectangle. You do not need to complete them, but the ones about special pieces help considerably. The first 10 are open to the public immediately. The next 9 only open when you meet the puzzle maker in the corresponding level of tournament play. They are a rehash of meeting your opponents in tournament play. The next 9 describe objects in the special puzzles Gramps the Turtle shows you, and they do not open until you unlock a special puzzle containing the special piece described. The final two are really rather useful--you get bonus stars just for paying attention to both ways to get stars! I guess that old guy really is desperate for people to listen to him banging on about obvious stuff. If we label the squares 1-30 going left to right and down, here is what each square tells us: 1. "Welcome to Puzzle Island!" 2. Rules of Denki Blocks You're shown how to win a simple level here, how the blocks move and how they stick together. You learn about white Blockers and how gumblocks clump together and the simple obstruction. It also mentions the rules--join all of the highlighted color gumblocks together to win. On later levels I've said "It's impossible to bring the yellows together" only to note they weren't asking for the yellows--after 10 minutes. You also get looks at the bonus shape. It usually doesn't come together obviously and you have to use blockers to make it. You get to see a simple way to do stuff wrong as well. You get to see the undo button, but it is only for one move. 3. The wizard explains how to play the various games. 4. Here you learn about the title of Puzzle Master, for solving all those puzzles. 5. Here you learn about how to move gumblocks together quickly. 6. Perfecto! teaches you to build shapes with the lowest amount of moves. 7. The race game is explained. 8. All Change is explained. 9. Battle is explained. Interesting game, but you need another GBA apparently. 10. Learn about Jessop. 11. Learn about Gramps. (special puzzles, from stars) 12. Learn about Chip, the miner. (level 1) 13. Learn about Poppy, Bluebell and Buttercup, the fairies. (level 2) 14. Learn about Princess Honey-Cake(level 3) 15. Learn about Morton, the dragon in Fire Mountain 16. Learn about Rough and Tumble, King Fruit-Cake's jester monkeys 17. Learn about Mildred, the witch 18. Learn about Grugg, the jailer 19. Learn about the Puzzle Master 20. Learn about Plods. Plods don't stick and are only pushed by another block. 21. Learn about Rogues. They never stick to any other block. 22. Learn about Painters. They change the color of any gumblock they get next to. This unclumps gumblocks. Unless two painters touch it at once. 23. Learn about Jokers. They flash(and move--don't clump with each other) around til you touch them with a gumblock, which changes them to that color. You get to see a cascade effect too. 24. Learn about Locks and Keys. 25. Learn about Switches. You must land on all of them at once to complete a level. Though if there's only one, it's a bit easier. 26. Learn about Gates. They only allow their color gumblock through. 27. Learn about Holders. They hold any gumblock of size <4 down. 28. Learn about Stickers, which work like holders but on everything. 29. Learn about Three of a Kind. You get three stars for doing so. The Puzzle Master tells you how you can swap those stars for special puzzles in the Denki Blocks club, which uses items from 20 to 28. 30. Learn about Bonus Shapes. You get one star for learning about them. That should make four stars. So you can look at a couple of special puzzles if you want. So you can visit here, visit the club and play a few special puzzles, and visit back and see more squares open. There is no bonus or special puzzle for seeing all 30 squares. 5. GENERAL STRATEGIES 6. TOURNAMENT PLAY Tournament play is structured in a straighforward manner. --Solving 15 of any puzzle maker's 25 puzzles pushes you to the next one. It gives you an award inside the octagon --Solving all of his puzzles opens up 5 additional puzzles you must solve in order(except for the final one) --Solving all those gets you another award --Solving all 235 puzzles opens up the "Extra!" mode --You can get a bonus star if there is a shape in the small screen on the right. Rotations, mirror images, or combinations thereof that differ from the original object are not acceptable. --You can get three bonus stars if you create identical shapes of equal colors. Again, no credit for rotations/mirror images. Par time = 1/5 # of par moves. In general the par time is VERY hard to beat without memorizing the par moves several times. Here I may use notation to show how pieces fit together, i.e. "To get the yellow blocks," 333 123 111 Shows, in the big picture, the recommended order to mix things together. This will also allow a reasonable hint without spoiling anything--or if, by some chance, my instructions are bad, the suffering will be less(email me with corrections though. On general strategy or specific moves. I'll appreciate them.) Also, if there's anyone who finds a quicker way than I do, I'd love to see about it. Preferably send me text detailing where I went wrong or something very compressed or a VM0/VMV file if necessary. Note that if you get stuck on some of these levels, you can always switch around, and you can even go to the funny random bonus puzzles to take a break. You should pick up enough stars along the way. Also, you should try for the earlier bonuses when possible, as they generally require fewer moves. If you can't figure an earlier bonus level out the next should be much tougher. There will also be a few moves at the end of the level which will just have you fooled and there's little to be done about that. Once you have 15, you can move on and the first few will be relatively easy. The difficulty progresses as you go down the level grid of 25. You will also notice that the 5 special puzzles you unlock once you have solved the first 5 are thematic and start off easy. Level 1-1 outline: ++++++++++++++++++ + + + + + ++++++++++++ + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + R R + + + + + + + + + + + + R R + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + ++++++++++++ + + + + + ++++++++++++++++++ Par: 15 moves/3.00 seconds For par: 5R 5U It's pretty hard to mess this level up, as you expect for a very introductory one. In fact it's impossible to put yourself in a losing position. The main obstacle to time-par is holding a key down too soon. Level 1-2 outline: ++++++++++++++++++ + + + + + + + + + + + ++++++ + + + YYY + + ++ + + + Y +Y + + + YYY + + ++++++ + + + + + + + + + + + ++++++++++++++++++ Par: 7 moves/ 1.50 seconds Bonus shape: YYY YY YYY This is an easy level to solve but the bonus is a bit trickier. U 4L solves the level, but for the bonus you need to drop the solitary Yellow onto the bottom structure and then maneuver the two remaining pieces together. For the bonus: 4R U 9L D 5L R D Level 1-3 outline: ++++++++++++++++++ + + + + + Y + + + + YYY + +++ +++ +RRR RRRRRRRRRRR+ +R+ +R+ +R+ +R+ +RRRRRRRRRRR RRR+ +++ +++ + + + Y + + + + + + + ++++++++++++++++++ Par: 31 moves/6:30 seconds Bonus shape: YYY Y Y 4R 4U 7L 6U mashes the shapes together. But again the bonus shape is tricky. You have to move the top 1x1 below the 3x1 and then moodge them together, then moodge the lone remaining 1x1 to them. For the bonus: 4L D 3L 3R 4D U 3L 5U (1st smush) 11R 4U 7L U 4L 4U Level 1-4 outline: ++++++++++++++++++ + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + RBY + + ++++++++++++++ + + RBY + + + + + + + + + + + + + ++++++++++++++++++ Par: 28 moves/5:70 seconds Chance for 3 stars here This is probably the easiest level to get the 3-star match on. Which makes sense, since it is the first one. The appearance may be deceiving, though, as that big wall is tougher to navigate than you'd think. You need to use the corners to bash the blocks each way. I actually found it easier to get the triple than par. For par: 6L U L U L 2U R 4D 2L For the triple: 6L D L 6D 14R 7D Level 1-5 outline: ++++++++++++++++++ + + + + + + ++++++++++++++++++ ++ + ++ +++++ +++++++ ++ + ++ ++ + ++ +R+ +RRR+ +++ + ++ +++ +RRR+ +R+ + ++ ++ ++ + + ++++++++ +++++ + ++ + ++++++++++++++++++ + + + + + + ++++++++++++++++++ Par: 54 moves/10:80 This level is symmetrical so it doesn't make much difference how you go about it. Maybe if you're left handed you'll attack the left first. That's how I did it. Given that you just cycle around and there are lots of dead ends, time-par is very achievable. For par: U 2R 3D 4L 5U 7R 2D(7-block) 3D 7L 2U Level 1-6 outline: ++++++++++++++++++ + + + RRRRR + + + R + + RRRRR R + + R + R + + R RRRRR + + R + + + R RRRRR + + R + R + + RRRRR R + + + R + + RRRRR R + + R + R + + R RRRRR + + R + + + RRRRR + ++++++++++++++++++ Par: 3 moves/0:60 Looks tricky with the blockers but isn't. The low par should be a tip-off. Time-par is nearly impossible unless your reflexes get it just right. For par: 2L U Level 1-7 outline: ++++++++++++++++++ + + + + + + + + + + + ++++++ + + +Y++Y+ + + ++ + + Y Y Y YY Y Y Y + + ++ + + +Y++Y+ + + ++++++ + + + + + + + + + ++++++++++++++++++ Bonus shape: Y Y Y Y YYYY Y Y Y Y The bonus is rather nasty on this one so you may want to get the easy win first. An illusion here is that you "should" try to form the H in the center, but you really need to rearrange the pieces to do so. For par: 7R 2L U D For the bonus: L U 2D 3D 2R 2L 7U 2R (and now the toughpart) U 3L D 3R 2U 8R 4D L 2U R U 3L 5U 9L Level 1-8 outline: ++++++++++++++++++ + + + + + + + + + +++++ + + + + + + Y + + + + + + Y Y Y + + + + + + Y + + + + + +++++ + + + + + + + ++++++++++++++++++ Bonus shape: Y YYY Y Par: 18 moves/3:60 The pieces are almost in the right place for an easy bonus but not quite. They're in the right order. But before aligning them vertically, you'll want to align the stuff so it's almost next to each other. This is a recurring and subtle theme in Perfecto!. To achieve the bonus: 2L 10R 7D To achieve par: 7L 7D Level 1-9 outline: ++++++++++++++++++ ++++ ++++ ++ ++ ++ RRRRRRRRRRRRR++ + RY YR + + R RRRRRRRRR R + + R RB BR R + + R R RRRRR R R + + R R R R R R + + R R R R R R R + + R R R R R R + + R R RRRRR R R + + R RB BR R + + R RRRRRRRRR R + ++ RY YR++ ++ RRRRRRRRRRRRR++ ++++ ++++ ++++++++++++++++++ Par: 33 moves/6:60 You can move the yellows and greens together if you are careful. Still this is a jobsworth sort of level where you just have to be sure not to match things the wrong way so that a 2x1 can't go up/down. For par: 3R 10L 9D Level 1-10 outline: ++++++++++++++++++ + +++++++ + + +R + + + + + R+ + + + +++ + + +++ + + + + R+ + + ++++++++++++ + + + + + + +++++++++ Y+ Y+ + ++B + +++ + + ++ B+ + + ++ + + +++++ + +++++ +++ Y + + ++ + ++++++++ + ++B + + +++++++++ + ++++++++++++++++++ Par: 22 moves/4:50 Chance for 3 stars here The most straightforward way to bag the triple is to make straight lines. To get things done quickly you have to make sure you can move several blocks freely with each move. It's easy to leave a straggler. For par: 2D 5L 3U 3R U L 3U L For the triple: 5L 3R 3U (green 1x3) L U 2L (red 1x3) 4D 4L (yellow 1x3) Level 1-11 outline: ++++++++++++++++++ + + + + + + + + + +++++++++ + + +YYY+ YY+ + + +Y Y+ + + + +++ Y+ + + ++ + + ++ + + +Y +++ +++++ + + +Y Y+ + + +YY + YYY+ + + +++++++++++++ + + + + + + + ++++++++++++++++++ 13 moves, 2:70 Here you need to form the 4 L's in a square around the inner square. They're all trapped in their chambers, so you have to freeze one. For the bonus: 2U 9D 4U R 2U 2R 3U R 12D R D 3L 2R 7D 6U R 3D 4R 5D If you win this after winning the others, you get a clear gem that is at the top of the octagonal inlay that will eventually host the seven others, too. You will also be able to see square 13 of training after visiting the three fairies. Level 1-16 outline: ++++++++++++++++++ + + + Y + + Y + + YY+YY + + Y + + Y R + + R + + RR+RR + + R + + R + + B + + B + + BB+BB + + B + + B + + + ++++++++++++++++++ Par: 12 moves/2:40 Chance for 3 stars here Seems like you can just do whatever you want and things will match up but the completed blocks get in the way of each other. I found the triple easier than par. For the triple: L U 2L(yellows) 2L D 2L(reds) 5L(greens) Level 1-17 outline: ++++++++++++++++++ + + + + + + + + + + + + + RR ++++ RR + + +RR+ + + + + + + +RR RR+ + + ++++++++++ + + + + + + + + + + + ++++++++++++++++++ Par: 9 moves/1:80 Going straight down leaves you having to loop around a bit so just make a juke and you're in. Not very tricky. For par: 4L 8D 12L U 3L 6D Level 1-19 outline: ++++++++++++++++++ + + + + + + + + + + + R R R R + + + +++ + + + + R R + + + + +++ + + + R R R R + + + + + + + + + + + + + ++++++++++++++++++ Par: 21 moves/4:20 Bonus shape: RRRR R R RRRR Obviously you have to move a few shapes downward so they don't stick in the center and while you can lump them in a corner, the bonus requires more finagling. For par: R 3D 2R 7D 5R For the bonus: L 4D 8L 4D 11R 2D R 2L 3U 5L 6D 7R Level 1-20 outline: ++++++++++++++++++ + + + + + ++++++++++ + + +YYYYYYYYY + + +YRRRRRRR + + +YRYYYYY + + Y+YRYRRR + + YY+YRYR+ + + RR+YRYR+ + + R+YRYRRR + + +YRYYYYY + + +YRRRRRRR + + +YYYYYYYYY + + ++++++++++ + + + + + ++++++++++++++++++ Par: 58 moves/11:70 Here it's just a question of seeing where precisely to like the mobile L's with the C's. Once you do that, there is just grunt work. But if you are too hasty you may touch the big C with your piece earlier than you wanted to. For par: 6D 12R 5U 3L 7U 14R 4D 3L Level 1-21 outline: ++++++++++++++++++ + + + +++++ +++++ + + +Y ++ ++ Y+ + + + Y ++++ Y + + + + Y ++ Y + + + ++ Y Y ++ + + ++ Y Y ++ + + ++ YY ++ + + ++ YY ++ + + ++ Y Y ++ + + ++ Y Y ++ + + + Y ++ Y + + + + Y ++++ Y + + + +Y ++ ++ Y+ + + +++++ +++++ + + + ++++++++++++++++++ Par: 24 moves/4:80 Par is a bit tricky here although you'll have a big diagonal structure that gets blocked easily enough to solve the puzzle by accident. For par: 2D 2R D R 4D 3L 3D U R 2U Level 1-22 outline: ++++++++++++++++++ + + + R + + R R + + R + + R Y + + + + + + R + Y + B + + + + + + +Y Y + B + + + + + + + Y +B + + + + B + + Y + + B + + B + + + ++++++++++++++++++ Chance for 3 stars here Par: 25 moves/5:10 Again you can throw pieces against the wall here and they will stick into a shape, but the triple is trickier. For par: 11U 6R though for timing, 12U 6R may be quicker. For the triple: 5U 3L 2R 2D L 5U 4L 3R 2D L 7U 3R(green) 4R U R U Level 1-23 outline: ++++++++++++++++++ + + + + + YR + + ++++++++++ + + + + + + + + + + YR + + + + YR + + + + + + + + + + + + RY + + + ++++RY++++ + + +RRYY+ + + ++++++ + + + + + ++++++++++++++++++ Par: 33 moves/6:60 You just have to flip the yellows and reds around but seeing as how the L's are anchors, you don't need anything fancy. You just drop the next block into the bottleneck and wiggle it left and right as necessary to put it over the other blocks of the same color. The end results? A 5x1 each of red, yellow and green. This isn't quite good enough for par, though. You have to deploy blocks quickly for that, and I found it best to keep the red bit at the top. You don't have to scramble to link it up. You just have to separate the yellows on one side and the greens on the other. I got misguided for a while with L 3D R 5D. Maybe there's a way to do it, but the key of course is to be able to 1) lock something in the middle sector without smushing any blocks together above or below(you lose then-- there's only enough to cover the middle) so that the two L's don't freeze it and 2) leave a block above and below for the final bit(spoken from painful experience.) There are only so many places to wiggle the blocks around but with the right start each block to put in the middle gets progressively easier. PERFECTO! Tons of maddening simplicity here. But you can beat the par moves if you are thinking straight, though it may take a few times through to beat the par time. Here Jessop the Wizard judges you on how quickly(in moves) you can create a given shape. Don't expect to get close to par at first, but eventually you'll see a way to create a shape--often you have to leave linking blocks up until the end. None of this is critical for winning trophies. But it is a different and interesting challenge. EXTRA Extra is just one of those old tile-sliding games such as you'd see on the old versions of the Macintosh, but the pictures are less dumpy. And there's no way to get into an unwinnable position. However, they are a bit vague, and given how broken up the pictures are you may need to remember what's where. The first puzzle is, surprisingly, the toughest, since you have to match up portions of the sky. The puzzles loop in a sequence of nine, based on the people that gave you puzzles. The lower right square remains empty. If you exit and return, the puzzle is reshuffled. So here is the basic strategy that you can use for a 5x5 puzzle. There are probably better strategy guides elsewhere, but if you've made it this far in Denki Blocks, you probably won't need too many tips. Match up the threee squares in the UL corner first, then match up the two in the UR. Repeat with the 2nd-highest row and the center row. Then work from left to right, matching up the two leftmost squares, then the next two. Finally you need to sort five out of the final six into the right places, and this really only requires fixing the two leftmost again. You should be able to put one next to the other and flip them over. Let's say you want to flip the 1 and 2 below. 1 3 4 2 5 5,2> 1v3< 2^5< 4>2v 3>1^ 5<3v 2<4^ 5,3> 1v2< Note the 3/5/4 are flipped from counterclockwise to clockwise, and there's no way to flip them back. But this game checked fairly for whether or not you can solve the original game from the previous. Also to match three in a row it's important to have them touching each other in the right order. It also helps to have a hole next to the first one. You may have to rotate around a bit. For instance, if you had 1-2-3 in order and wanted to have them 1U1L on square a, and b were open, you would shift them left onto square b. Then you could shift f up, de> to get to square c. You would keep pushing 1 to the next letter and have 2 and 3 follow behind until you got to the promised land. This works the same for pretty much anywhere you wish to place something. For 2 tiles together it is a bit easier to move around but with 3 it may be tricky. Remember that if you move up or down a row 1-2-3 becomes 3-2-1. Basically, plot out a way so tile #1 goes left for your final move. a l k j i b 1 2 3 h c d e f g For the tile pair, you may just need to flip them around as you did 1&2 in the final six above. But this should be easier, because you'll have so much more space--other tiles can be flipped with abandon because they're not in their final place yet. 11.
