Dynasty Warriors Advance FAQ/Walkthrough by Laytruce, who is either too lazy or lacks talent for some ASCII art. ---------------------- 0. Introduction [INTR] ---------------------- Hello there, this is Laytruce (or LittleConqueror, whichever) typing this thing here. I'm a big fan of Koei's Dynasty Warriors series, and since there aren't a whole lot of faqs for this particular game, I thought I'd do one. This is my very first FAQ, a true milestone in anyone's life! Ahem. Dynasty Warriors is a series of games made by Koei based on the chinese novel 'Romance of the Three Kingdoms'. They're slightly strategic action games. Basically, you pick a warrior from the Three Kingdoms era and run around a battlefield hacking up any enemies you may find. This game is a little different though. Instead of one, big battlefield you can freely move in, the battlefields here are divided into spaces, connected to each other. Each turn, you make a move, and when you reach an enemy, you fight it. You get a small piece of battlefield for you and your enemies to move in. There's other differences, but they're explained in the Game Mechanics section. *Mini-Review Graphics: 6/10 I don't care much for the backgrounds or the chibi-styled sprites. The character portraits look nice, though. Sound: 7/10 The music is in the same vain as the console games' soundtrack. Sound effects are decent, and there's even some voice samples from Dynasty Warriors 4. You can change the volume of both music and sound effects. Gameplay: 7.5/10 While the game is pretty slow-paced, the frequent battles keep you from getting bored. Fighting and building up characters are enjoyable, and the large collection of weapons makes the game more interesting. Replay Value: 4/10 After beating every Musou Mode, you may come back once in a while to train one character or collect weapons. The game has an option to reset each character's abilities, so you can start over. *Version History v1.03: 21st of November 2017 (yikes) Adjusted some character's stats and assessments. Added level up tables. Changed a few things in the walkthrough. v1.02: 8th of September 2009 Added a mini-review. Added a quote from the novel for each character. Fixed a few small errors and typos. v1.01: 4th of September 2009 Nothing much, just a few changes to the introduction. v1.00: 24th of July 2009 Finally got it done after a long period of 'don't really feel like it'. This guide can only appear on GameFAQs and Neoseeker. -------------------- 1. Table of Contents [CNTS] -------------------- 0. Introduction [INTR] 1. Table of Contents [CNTS] 2. Controls [CTRL] 3. Game Mechanics [MECH] ----------------- At the start of each battle, you'll be taken to the Menu screen. First, there's the Camp Screen. You can go to the Armory to change your equipped weapon, view unit info, view info on your abilities and powerups, and read the tutorial. Second, you can view the current conditions for victory and defeat. You can also read the intro to the battle again, and, last but not least, start the battle. *Modes These are the different modes to play: -Musou Mode: pick a character and play through his/her story. Musou modes are separated by country (so Xiahou Dun and Xu Zhu have the same Musou Mode). -Free Mode: play any battle you've reached with any character you'd like. Useful for training purposes and getting weapons. -Challenge Mode: there's three games to try out here. Endurance is simple: kill as many enemies as you can before you bite the dust. In Time Attack, you need to defeat 100 enemies as quickly as possible. Battle Luck is weird. You fight some enemies and an officer, then two treasure chests appear. One takes you to the next level, while the other one takes you to the PREVIOUS level. You can only get the 'bad chest' once each stage, though. You can also use items in this mode. You get these items by winning a battle in Musou or Free mode. Health Books increase your Max Life in Endurance, while Time Mantras shave a few seconds off your time in Time Attack or Battle Luck. *Map screen The game will always give you a good look at the entire map upon starting the battle. Then, your turn starts. You can move to any place directly connected to the one you're currently standing on. Think before you act, though: you can only move once per turn (well, there's two exceptions, but more on that later). If you end up on the same spot as an enemy unit, you'll have to fight it. You don't have to move from your position, though. You can just end your turn or search for recovery items if you want. After that, it's your allies' turn, then your enemies get to move, and then it's back to you. You may move across two spaces at once IF you've already traversed both of them (they'll be light blue instead of red), and if the first one isn't occupied by an enemy unit. You may also find a stat-boosting item after moving. Here's all of them: -Dim Sum: increases you Max Life by 10. -Bronze/Iron/Silver/Gold Sword: Attack +1/2/4/8 -Soldier/Nobleman/General/Emperor Shield: Defense +1/2/4/8 -Strategy Scroll: increases skill of equipped weapon type by 1. *Fighting screen When you're fighting an enemy unit, you'll be running around happily on the field, bridge, or whatever. Some enemy soldiers will show up, usually 2 to 6 at a time. Once you defeat (some of) them, more will show up until you've defeated the entire unit. In the top left corner, there's a KO Count, which tells you how many enemy soldiers have already been slain, and how many there are in this unit. Each unit will have a certain amount of swordsmen (SW), spearmen (SP) and bowmen (BW), and one unit leader (either an officer or a slightly stronger soldier). These leaders will usually come when you've slain almost all of the soldiers. In the top right corner, there's a timer. Don't worry, there's no time limit to defeat the unit, you can take as long as you like. So why is it there? Well, depending on the timer's color, once you've defeated the entire unit, you'll get either a Triumph, a Victory, or a Close Call. If the timer is white, you'll get a Triumph. If the white timer expires, it'll reset and become red. Finish the fight with a red timer for a Victory. Should the red timer expire, it'll turn purple, and you'll get a Close Call once you finally beat the unit. You should always aim for a Triumph. If you manage to Triumph over a unit, some of your life will be restored (about 10 %), and if it's your turn, you'll get an extra move if you haven't already gotten one. This means you'll be able to move twice or defeat two units during the same turn. You cannot move past enemy units, though, so if you're on a spot with 2 enemy units and you Triumph over one unit, you'll have to face the other one immediately after that. Also, if you use your extra move and land on a spot with another enemy unit, you will not engage it yet. If you get a Victory, nothing special happens, really. The game just proceeds normally. If you get a Close Call, however, you'll have to forfeit your next turn, so try to avoid that. If the fight isn't going well, you can retreat. Walk, or preferably run against an edge of the battlefield. An exit marker will appear, and after a few seconds, you'll leave the fight. Some of your life will also be restored. Your turn will be over, though, and you'll move back to your previous spot. Also note that you cannot retreat from certain battles, like enemy commanders. NOTE: If the enemies don't seem to be appearing, walk around the area. They sometimes get stuck behind a fence or something, probably because they failed 'Running Around 101' class. *Morale Unlike the Dynasty Warriors games on the consoles, where every unit has its own separate morale, morale here is shared by the entire army. Morale will be influenced by certain events, like reinforcements arriving or a strategy succeeding or failing. Also, morale will usually drop slightly for each unit defeated. Morale doesn't do much for you, though. It's mainly there for battles between AI units. If your army has greater morale than your enemy, your allies will have an advantage over the enemies they're fighting, and vice- versa. Of course, the number of troops left in a unit is important as well. Morale will usually start at 100, can drop to 0 (although that won't happen too often), and rise...well, very high. I know it can exceed 200, but I don't know the exact limit. *Winning or losing a battle There's only one way to win a battle: fulfill the conditions for Victory. Usually, you just need to defeat the enemy commander, sometimes along with a second or even a third officer. You lose a battle when your life runs out, or when the conditions for Defeat are fulfilled (most of the time, this consists of your commander being defeated). When you've won a battle, you'll receive either a weapon you don't have yet, or a Time Mantra/Health Book, both of which are used in Challenge Mode. This depends on the map difficulty, and how many powerups you have acquired at the end of the battle. *Level Up After getting a certain amount of KO's, your character will level up after a fight. He/she will get at least one stat increase and some weapon skill points, which are needed to equip better weapons. These are the stats: Life: the length of your life bar. The more you have, the more damage you can take. Also increased by finding Dim Sum (+10). Musou: increases the length of your Musou attack. Unlike the console DW games, the length of the Musou bar will not increase and is the same for every character. Attack: the more you have, the more damage you dish out. Also increased by finding Bronze (+1), Iron (+2), Silver (+4) or Gold (+8) Swords. Defense: the more you have, the less damage you take from enemies. Also increased by finding Soldier's (+1), Nobleman's (+2), General's (+4) or Emperor's (+8) Shields. Movement: the more you have, the faster you walk/run. Weapon Skill will increase depending on the type(s) of weapon you have been using since the last Level Up. If your character has used a kind of weapon for the first time, the increase will be larger. All weapon skills will always increase at a Level Up (unless they're already at 100). Once your character reaches level 20, levelling up will go much slower. Theoretically, each character can be levelled up all the way to level 99, but you'd need about 65000 KO's to reach that. Per character. Yeah, it's not worth it. *Finding and equipping weapons You'll probably find some treasure boxes after moving, especially if it's your first time using a certain character. You may also receive a weapon after a battle is won. All weapons you find this way are usable by the character you're using (immediately or eventually). If you can't equip a certain weapon, you either don't have enough weapon skill, or it's a weapon for one specific person. You may also get weapons after certain events. These weapons are fixed and not necessarily meant for your current character. The difficulty of the map you're playing also influences what weapons you can receive. For example, on Easy, you'll never receive a weapon with a rarity of S (except for event-based weapons). *Attack types There are 3 main types of attacks: normal attacks (B Button), charge attacks (A button), and a Musou attack (A while holding L, needs full Musou bar). Here's the lowdown: -Normal attacks: Usually, you can do 3 of these in a row. This number can be increased by certain weapons and powerups, though, to a maximum of 9. -Charge attacks: There are 4 kinds of charge attacks: -Storm (A): charge forward and hit anything in your path. Strong against bowmen. -Stun (B+A): makes enemies unable to move for a small period of time. -Chain (B+B+A): a series of attacks stringed together. Strong against spearmen. -Reach (B+B+B+A): your character spins around or just slashes about, hitting anything near him/her. Strong against swordsmen. -Musou attack: once your Musou bar is filled (either by hitting enemies or getting hit yourself), hold L and press A to unleash this attack. It's basically a bunch of attacks together. You cannot get hit while performing a Musou attack. When your Life is low (red), the Musou gauge fills by itself. *Elements Quite a lot of weapons have an element. That element has a chance of being activated during Charge and Musou attacks. There are 6 elements in total: -Fire: makes enemies gradually lose some Life. -Ice: freezes enemies, immobilizing them for a while. -Lightning: makes lightning spread from your weapon, circling away from you, damaging all enemies it hits. -Blast: deals damage to enemies who are blocking as well. -Poison: makes enemies take more damage for a while. -Vorpal: has a chance of instantly killing anything that's not an officer. *Powerups DW Advance has a powerup system unique to the series. In the lower right corner of the Fighting screen, you'll see 6 emblems, with a circle in the middle. That circle will fill up when you kill enemies, keep hitting dead enemies, and hit Supply Troops (guys in white armor who don't attack). Once the circle is filled once, a cursor will appear on the top emblem. If you don't have both powerups of that type yet, you may press the R button to receive said powerup. If the circle is filled while the cursor is already on an emblem, it will move to the next one, clockwise. This way, you'll eventually get all powerups. Each emblem has 2 powerups. Storm (purple): enhances your Storm attack, usually making it reach farther. Stun (yellow): enhances your Stun attack. Chain (blue): enhances your Chain attack, increasing its length. Reach (green): enhances your Reach attack, increasing its length. Speed (cyan): increases your movement speed. Valor (red): gives you certain bonuses depending on the weapon you have currently equipped. Your powerups will be reset at the start of each battle, so you'll have to go get them again. This usually doen't take too long, though. You can lose powerups, as well. Any time you get hit with a bow, or get hit 3 times in a row with anything else, or get knocked down by an officer, there's a chance you'll lose a powerup. This is always the earliest powerup in your circle (usually the top one). You can just get it back the way you got it the first time, though. Also, when you lose a powerup, a Supply soldier will appear, running about a little. Any hit on those guys fills up your circle, for an easy way to regain your powerup (or get a different one). Valor powerups are quite special, as their effect changes when you equip a different weapon. That's why you'll always have to recollect your Valor powerups after changing your weapon. Here's the lowdown on their effects: -Attack + : increases your attack power. Followed by a value indicating its effectiveness, ranging from 1 to 9. -Defense + : decreases damage taken. Followed by a value indicating its effectiveness, ranging from 1 to 9. -Ranged def + : decreases damage taken from ranged attack (i.e. bows and those beams Sima Yi and Zhuge Liang shoot. Oh, and Zhang Jiao's fireballs, as well). -Element effect + : increases the effectiveness of the weapon's element. -Fire, Ice, Lightning, Poison resist + : increases resistance to said element. -Element resist + : increases resistance to all 6 elements. -Musou accumulate + : makes your Musou bar fill up faster. -Musou power + : increases the damage your Musou attacks deal. -True Musou: increases the power and length of your Musou attack. -Life drain: regain Life upon hitting enemies. -Numbness - : decreases the time your character needs to start moving again after finishing an attack. -Firmness + : decreases the chance of getting stunned by attacks. Also decreases the chance of getting knocked down. -Item effect x2: doubles the amount of Life restored by healing items. -Parry ratio + : increases the chance of succesfully blocking continuous attacks. -Parry break: increases the chance of breaking your enemy's defense when they're blocking. -Atk count + : increases the number of regular attacks you can do in a row. Without powerups, this number is 3, Atk count +1 gives you 6, and Atk count +2 gives you 9. *Enemy types There are 4 kinds of enemy soldiers: -Swordsmen (SW): walk around, slash with their swords, block when they're low on life. Weak against Reach attacks. -Spearmen (SP): like swordsmen, but with slightly longer reach, slightly lower attack speed, and they take longer to stand up after being knocked down. Weak against Chain attacks. -Bowmen (BW): annoying little guys. They try to stay away from you and shoot from a distance. The most common cause of powerup loss. Cannot block. Weak against Storm attacks. Note that you can deflect arrows by hitting them. -Supply troops: they just look at you and walk about aimlessly. Until you chase them, that is, then they'll try to run. Hitting any of these guys fills up your powerup circle. Cannot attack or block. ------------- 4. Characters [CHAR] ------------- --Wei-- *Xiahou Dun "The essence of my parents cannot be thrown away!" (Then he pulled out his eye, which had an arrow in it, and swallowed it.) Life: **** Musou: ********** Attack: ******* Defense: *** Movement: ***** Attack Speed: Fast Powerups: Reach-Stun-Valor-Speed-Chain-Storm Weapons: Scimitars, Great Swords, Rapiers Meh, I like him better on the consoles. His Chain attack doesn't do nearly enough damage, and he can barely move during his Reach attack. His Attack is fine, but most of his other stats are poor. *Xu Zhu "My own Fan Kuai!" (Cao Cao) Life: ********* Musou: ********** Attack: ******** Defense: *** Movement: ** Attack Speed: Slow Powerups: Storm-Stun-Reach-Valor-Chain-Speed Weapons: Clubs, Pikes, Halberds The slowest character in the game, but he can really dish out some heavy damage. Once you get one of his charge attacks going, enemies die. A lot of enemies die. Unless, you know, you're aiming in the complete opposite direction. *Zhen Ji "With a face fair as jade, her skin flower-fresh, she was a beauty whose glance could topple kingdoms." Life: ** Musou: **** Attack: *** Defense: ********* Movement: ********** Attack Speed: Fast Powerups: Chain-Stun-Speed-Storm-Valor-Reach Weapons: Flutes, Swords, Fans She's not bad, actually. Her only problem is dealing significant damage, which can prevent you from getting Triumphs. Her Reach attack is pretty mediocre as well. *Cao Cao (Unlocked after you clear Musou mode with any Wei officer) "Better to wrong the world than have it wrong me!" Life: *** Musou: ******* Attack: ***** Defense: ********** Movement: ******* Attack Speed: Fast Powerups: Valor-Chain-Storm-Reach-Speed-Stun Weapons: Swords, Fans, Axes My favorite Wei character in this game. Once he gets his powerups, all of his charge attacks shoot shock waves. His Chain and Reach attacks consist of only one hit, making him easy to combo with, executing Charge attack after Charge attack while your enemies are left...well, dead actually. Be prepared for a few lame "Movement +5/10" level ups though. --Wu-- *Sun Ce "If I had such a son, I could die without regret." (Yuan Shu) Life: *** Musou: ******* Attack: ****** Defense: ***** Movement: ******* Attack Speed: Fast Powerups: Storm-Valor-Chain-Reach-Speed-Stun Weapons: Tonfas, Twin Blades, Twin Rods Rather balanced stat-wise, but his charge attacks leave a lot to be desired. They're pretty ineffective, usually making the most important swipes miss. He also gets a lot of boring "Movement +5/10" level ups. Oh well, at least he's got an original phrase for defeating officers. *Sun Shang Xiang "Our mistress is fond of martial arts, and her maids perform combat for her amusement." (Keeper of Shang Xiang's quarters) Life: ** Musou: **** Attack: *** Defense: ****** Movement: ********** Attack Speed: Fast Powerups: Storm-Speed-Reach-Stun-Valor-Chain Weapons: Chakrams, Maces, Claws Ugh. I'll be honest, I don't like her. Her stats are rather poor. Combine that with very short Chain and Musou attacks, and have fun not killing enemies. She gets better later on, when she gets her Luna Chakram. It has a Vorpal element, which makes her powered-up Reach attack worth using (9 hits, all with a chance of instant death? Yes please!) I really wished her Chain powerups weren't last, though, as it makes acquiring powerups much more difficult. *Zhou Yu "A man of gallant bearing and striking appearance." Life: **** Musou: **** Attack: **** Defense: ********** Movement: ******** Attack Speed: Fast Powerups: Chain-Valor-Storm-Stun-Speed-Reach Weapons: Rapiers, Great Swords, Pirate Swords For me, the best starting Wu character. He's got nice stats and easy-to-use attacks. His Musou is somewhat short, though, but he gets along just fine. *Sun Jian (Unlocked after you clear Musou mode with any Wu officer) "At their head was a man of broad forehead and wide face, with a body powerful as a tiger's and a torso thick as a bear's." Life: ***** Musou: ********** Attack: ******* Defense: ******* Movement: ***** Attack Speed: Fast Powerups: Stun-Chain-Storm-Valor-Speed-Reach Weapons: Swords, Fans, Rods No slow high-life characters for Wu, I guess. His stats start out well-balanced, but his Life and Movement don't improve that much. His other stats are great. His attacks are a lot like Cao Cao's, creating shock waves when powered up. He's less easy to combo with, though. --Shu-- *Zhao Yun "For the sake of a suckling like you, I risked losing a great commander!" (Liu Bei, after Zhao Yun had risked his life to save Liu Bei's infant son) Life: **** Musou: **** Attack: ***** Defense: ******** Movement: ******** Attack Speed: Average Powerups: Chain-Valor-Storm-Reach-Speed-Stun Weapons: Spears, Halberds, Scythes Out of the starting Shu characters, he's probably the easiest to start with. His Attack is a little dissappointing, but he'll manage. I rather like his powerup order as well. *Guan Yu "But if I have failed to taste your flesh in life, Lü Meng, I shall give your soul no peace in death - for I am Guan Yunchang, lord of Hanshou precinct!" Life: ****** Musou: ******* Attack: ******* Defense: ***** Movement: ****** Attack Speed: Slow Powerups: Stun-Valor-Reach-Speed-Chain-Storm Weapons: Pole Blades, Pikes, Halberds My favorite Shu character. His stats are good, and his charges are amazing. Both his Chain and Reach attack are very powerful, allowing you to collect your powerups with ease. If you don't mind his below-average attack speed, definitely give him a try. *Zhang Fei "I am Zhang Fei of Yan! Have you a man who'll fight it out to the death?" Life: ******* Musou: ********** Attack: ******* Defense: **** Movement: *** Attack Speed: Slow Powerups: Storm-Chain-Valor-Stun-Reach-Speed Weapons: Pikes, Halberds, Clubs Basically a slower, slightly stronger version of Guan Yu. His charge attacks are slightly less useful, but still good enough for fast powerups. His Musou attack is incredibly long to boot. It's also rather fun killing a group of soldiers with a Reach attack, only for the next group to run into it and die too. *Liu Bei (Unlocked after you clear Musou mode with any Shu officer) "The heroes of the present day number but two - you, my lord, and myself." (Cao Cao, while having a drink with Liu Bei) Life: **** Musou: ******* Attack: ***** Defense: ******** Movement: ****** Attack Speed: Fast Powerups: Valor-Reach-Stun-Chain-Speed-Storm Weapons: Swords, Fans, Staves Again, a lot like Cao Cao and Sun Jian, but with the most balanced stat growths out of the three. I noticed he always gets a little bit of Movement at level ups, along with some other stat. He also gets the shock waves after getting the right power ups. --Lu (as if it's supposed to be a country)-- *Lu Bu (Unlocked after you unlock Cao Cao, Sun Jian and Liu Bei, and clear Musou mode with any one of those three) "I fear no man." Life: ********** Musou: ********** Attack: ********** Defense: ******* Movement: ********** Attack Speed: Slow Powerups: Stun-Chain-Storm-Reach-Speed-Valor Weapons: Halberds, Pikes, Pole Blades Easily the strongest character in the game, stat-wise. His attack speed isn't that great, but he doesn't really need it anyway. Have fun tearing through troops with very long charge and Musou attacks. I know I did. ------------- 5. Musou Mode [MSOU] ------------- All difficulty levels are based upon the Easy difficulty setting. For Normal, add one star, for Hard, add two. A * after the Victory/Defeat Conditions indicates that those conditions will change during the course of the battle. A * after an officer's name means that the officer will be replaced by someone else, should you be playing as him/her. This does not happen in Free Mode, though. Starting morale will be written like this: (Player Army morale)-(Enemy Army morale) NOTE: I will assume that you get Triumphs about 99% of the time. If getting a Triumph is too hard for you, either lower the difficulty level or train your character in Free Mode. Also note that Zhen Ji and Sun Shang Xiang have more trouble Triumphing than other characters due to their low attack, at least early in the game. --------------- Musou Mode: Wei [MWEI] --------------- --Wei 1: Yellow Turbans-- Difficulty Level: * Victory Conditions: Defeat Zhang Jiao. Defeat Conditions: He Jin is defeated. Starting Morale: 120-100 Allied Units: 3 He Jin (LV 4, SW 10, SP 10, BW 10) Liu Bei (LV 3, SW 15, SP 0, BW 3) Cao Cao* (LV 3, SW 0, SP 5, BW 15) Enemy Units: 19 Zhang Liang (LV 3, SW 10, SP 8, BW 0) Zhang Bao (LV 3, SW 10, SP 8, BW 0) Pei Yuan Shao (LV 3, SW 10, SP 0, BW 8) Ma Yuan Yi (LV 3, SW 10, SP 0, BW 8) Zhang Man Cheng (LV 3, SW 0, SP 8, BW 10) Zhang Jiao (LV 3, SW 0, SP 8, BW 10) Swordsmen (LV 2, SW 17, SP 3, BW 0) x4 Spearmen (LV 2, SW 0, SP 17, BW 3) x3 Spearmen (LV 2, SW 0, SP 15, BW 7) x4 Spearmen (LV 1, SW 3, SP 13, BW 4) Spearmen (LV 1, SW 2, SP 15, BW 3) Allied reinforcements: 0 Enemy reinforcements: 4 Zhang Jiao (LV 4, SW 10, SP 5, BW 15) Spearmen (LV 1, SW 2, SP 15, BW 3) Spearmen (LV 1, SW 3, SP 13, BW 4) Swordsmen (LV 2, SW 16, SP 3, BW 0) The battle starts off with He Jin giving orders and showing he's a wuss. Wow, some Grand General he is. Anyway, start by moving right. Defeat the Spearmen who attack you, and go battle Zhang Jiao. You'll notice he looks and fights like a generic general, and what do you know, he appears to be a fake. It wouldn't be much fun if the battle was already over after two fights, would it? Meh. Anyway, after you beat him, He Jin gets way overconfident, charging recklessly at the enemy troops like an idiot. Since we'd rather not lose him, let's go help him. Move towards He Jin, defeating any troops that get in your way. Of course, the moment He Jin starts fighting, he gets in trouble. Just defeat any troops near him and he should be fine. After a while, Zhang Liang will use sorcery to create rockslides along the eastern path and make some of his troops advance. He Jin will move towards the northeast for a while, attacking the troops coming from Zhang Liang. Defeat them yourself to make sure he doesn't get into too much trouble. After a few turns, the real Zhang Jiao will appear in the far north, along with 3 reinforcement units. He Jin will get scared and retreat to the main camp, making the Yellow Turban troops chase him. Make sure he gets there safely and kill any advancing troops. Zhang Bao should have started using sorcery by now, creating annoying flame jets in his area. If you want, you may get some Dim Sum (Life Max +10) right in the middle of the map. You can take either path up, it doesn't really matter, but since Cao Cao and Liu Bei both take the western path, I usually go east. Either way, you'll want to defeat both Zhang Liang and Zhang Bao to stop their sorcery and weaken Zhang Jiao. In the upper left corner is an armory, where you receive either a Bronze Sword, a Private Shield or a Strategy Scroll. Go get it if you want, then move towards Zhang Jiao. He'll run around and shoot fireballs. Try to avoid them, and use a combination of Storm, Chain and Musou attacks to take him down. After slaying him, either advance to the right or go up to defeat the enemies advancing on Xiahou Dun. Either way, Jia Xu will ambush you. After defeating everyone in sight, Lu Bu will appear along with some troops. If this is your first time playing as your current character, avoid him. He'll kick your butt. Your allies are going to have a tough time against these troops. Better to play defensively for a while. Xu You will report to Yuan Shao about their tunnel plan, which has failed because of the rain. Yuan Shao will get angry and order him to advance. He'll appear to the north of Guan Du castle, showing distrust in his current leader. Defeat him, and he'll defect, telling you the location of Yuan Shao's supply depot. Yuan Shao will start calling in reinforcements. He'll do so for a good chunk of the battle. Then, Guan Yu will advance, and the rain will stop (yay!). Stop any soldiers approaching the castle. Guan Yu will start fighting Yan Liang, and kill him. He'll do the same to Wen Chou, causing Yuan Shao's army's morale to drop. Then, Liu Bei and Guan Yu meet, and both of them leave. A few turns later, Lu Bu will appear in the stronghold Xu You started in. He's even stronger than he was in Hu Lao Gate, so again, avoid him if you're not strong enough. He IS manageable with Cao Cao's quick attacks, though you'll take a long time depleting his Life. Anyway, he won't move from his position. After a few more turns, Yuan Shao will order to pull back and defend. Your morale will finally catch up to Yuan Shao's, so go and attack Wu Chao, their supply depot. Once you get there, you'll immediately burn it, and then fight Chunyu Qiong's unit. Zhang He will start to advance. Defeat him, and he'll surrender, after which he'll appear at Guan Du to defend it. Let's see if we can keep that up. Zhou Yu mentions they're going to use strategy to win. The key to this battle is foiling their plans. It consists of 3 parts, and if you're planning to ruin all of them, you'll need to Triumph about every single battle you fight. So let's go! For your first turn, move down to where Xu Shu is. Cao Cao will order Xu Shu to go and see what Pang Tong is up to, as he's acting strange. Zhou Yu will counter this by ambushing you. Defeat the swordsmen unit, then return to the place you started at. Xu Shu will be alright now, so start going west. Zhuge Liang will start praying at his altar for southeast wind. That's the second part of the plan. Zhou Yu will make some troops appear again, which can actually be used to your advantage, as Triumphing them gives you an extra move. Then, more reinforcements will appear, this time it's Zhao Yun. You'll want to Triumph over him too. Guan Yu also appears in the east. He doesn't do much except move once and stand around. Xu Shu should reach Pang Tong at this point, exposing the latter's plan and making him retreat. Keep going down, defeating the troops and Jiang Qin along the way. When you get close to the altar, Zhang Fei will appear near it. Triumph over him, too, and go over to stop Zhuge Liang. He shoots green, Blast-elemental beams at you, but his Life is really low, so he shouldn't take long. After one more turn, Huang Gai will appear (he hid himself at the start of the battle), pretending to surrender, as it turns out quickly. Instead, he prepares a fire attack on your ships! So yeah, we're going to stop him. Sun Shang Xiang appears too, along with 2 more troop units. Slash your way to Huang Gai, defeating Sun Shang Xiang and Gan Ning along the way. You may find a General's Shield (Defense +4) as well. After defeating Huang Gai, go north to kill any enemies charging Cao Cao. We'll want to go to the middle of the battlefield, where Sun Jian is. Run through the swordsmen unit and Han Dang. Zhang Liao will challenge Sun Jian. The latter will advance, after which Li Dian appears and destroys the bridge, cutting off Sun Jian's escape route. Lu Meng appears near him to try and rescue him. Keep moving towards them. Li Dian's forces will be annihilated before you get there. If you made it to Sun Jian in time, you'll notice you can't choose who to attack, as you HAVE to take on Lu Meng first. That's no big deal if you Triumph over him though. Defeat Sun Jian, and he'll die. This is not the end of the battle, though. Sun Ce will take control of his father's army, so now you'll have to defeat him. Gan Ning and Taishi Ci will appear as reinforcements, too. I recommend chasing after Taishi Ci first, as Gan Ning will be occupied fighting Xiahou Dun. Every enemy officer you defeat will raise your morale now, so make the most of it. Lu Xun's the closest, so go kick him. Then Sun Ce and his troops. When Sun Ce dies, Sun Quan will take command, so go over to the east. Xiahou Dun will struggle for a while, but he should manage to hold out, defeat Zhu Ran and cripple Gan Ning's unit. Beat Gan Ning and Sun Quan, and, as you could have guessed, Sun Shang Xiang takes command over the remaining troops. Defeating her finally results in victory. Unless you're playing as Cao Cao, then there's no one important to defend on the left flank anyway. Go down either flank, but make sure you don't stray out too far: both Xu Huang and Xiahou Yuan won't hold out for long. Zhuge Liang will start calling in Wood Oxen for supplies: they will appear from the bases in the southwest and southeast. When a Wood Ox reaches any unit, that unit's abilities will improve (although I don't notice much while fighting it). If you encounter a Wood Ox unit yourself, you'll have to fight 30 troops. You'll get a recovery item or maybe even a Dim Sum (Max Life +10) out of it. When you've gone about halfway down a flank, Zhao Yun will appear in the center. Immediately return to the place where you started. Zhuge Liang will have a bridge laid out in the center, and Zhao Yun will use it to advance. Ma Chao and Jiang Wei will also appear. Defeat Zhao Yun as quickly as possible. Then, Cao Zhen and Cao Zhang will make their entrance, along with some troops, and soon after, Zhang He comes as well. Go over to the flank you didn't defend (Xu Huang or Xiahou Yuan are probably gone by now) and defeat the invading troops. After that, return to the center to hold off the advancing Wei Yan and Guan Yu. Then, go down either flank, get rid of any enemies there, and take the base at the end before cleaning up the center and the other flank. Zhuge Liang should be the last one you take on. He'll shoot beams again, much like in Chi Bi, he's just stronger now. It's not over yet, though. Liu Bei's unit will appear to the southwest of you, so go over to him. Don't expect to fight just another unit, though. Once he and you meet, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei will reappear, and you'll have to fight all three at once! I'd suggest leaving Zhang Fei last, as he's got a lot more life than the other two. You also have to Triumph over them, or they'll simply come back for another round! When you win, it's over. Follow Sun Jian as he advances on Zhang Liao. Soon enough, a bunch of enemy reinforcements appear, and they destroy the bridge south. Defeat the enemies attacking you, then repel Zhang Liao. He's not finished yet when you beat him, though. Defeat Yue Jin, Xu Huang and some enemy troops nearby. When Sun Jian reaches the place where the bridge was, he'll jump over the river to safety. Don't bother going directly to Cao Cao, he won't open the gates. If you've recruited Gan Ning or Taishi Ci, they'll arrive by now, Gan Ning on the right, Taishi Ci on the left. Go left. Soon, Zhang Liao will reappear to the left, along with some troops. To the south of him, Xiahou Dun and Xiahou Yuan will arrive, and some swordsman units consisting mainly of bowmen (huh?) appear near the center. Defeat all enemies there, then go up towards Sima Yi. Gan Ning and Sun Quan should be able to clear the right, but if they aren't doing well, go and give them a hand. The stronghold beneath Sima Yi yields a morale boost; take it if you want, then defeat Sima Yi. This will open He Fei Castle's gates. Take a look at your morale: it's about the highest I've ever seen in this game (I had 235). You are to take over Shu's stronghold first. Do so, and advance further. Huang Zhong gets suspicious and intends to pull back to defend the main camp. Defeat him before he is able to, and the fire attack will succeed. Liu Bei starts retreating. Guan Yu arrives. Defeat Wei Yan, Zhang Fei and Guan Yu, and the troops near the burning camp. Then go after Liu Bei. Zhuge Liang will have the castle gates closed, so you'll have to go south. Once you're near the square-shaped area, Zhuge will block you way back with rocks. Now, the square-shaped area is the Stone Sentinel Maze. After your turn, you'll get attacked by a unit of 60 (pretty weak) stone soldiers. You need to Triumph over them to continue. Since these fights are pretty boring, proceed directly to the exit to the left. It doesn't really matter which way you go (though I remember one square having a weapon box). Keep going along the path north. After a few turns, Zhuge will have some boats line up to the east of him to create a path to Sun Jian. Zhao Yun also appears on those boats soon after (he says "Sun Xiu will protect you with his life!", which doesn't make much sense). Defeat the two soldier units if you want, then go and defeat Zhuge Liang. Ma Chao should have appeared in the south by now. Then simply defeat Liu Bei to clear Wu's Musou Mode! Anyway, once you're on the spot next to him, he'll attack you. Run around for a while, making sure to stay out of reach, until Lu Bu gets annoyed with you. Then, retreat from the battle. You'll see your character retreat a few steps, and Lu Bu chasing him. Then he'll get ambushed by Liu Bei, Zhang Fei and Guan Yu (who will teleport there if they weren't there yet). Li Ru and Dong Zhuo are the only ones left, so just go and slay them to finish this battle. --Lu Bu 3: Chi Bi-- Difficulty Level: ****** Victory Conditions: Defeat Cao Cao.* Defeat Conditions: Zhang Liao is defeated.* Starting Morale: 190-100 Allied Units: 8 Sun Jian (LV 8, SW 10, SP 12, BW 20) Zhou Yu (LV 7, SW 10, SP 5, BW 15) Huang Gai (LV 7, SW 16, SP 14, BW 0) Gan Ning (LV 7, SW 14, SP 16, BW 0) Jiang Qin (LV 7, SW 14, SP 16, BW 0) Lu Meng (LV 7, SW 0, SP 16, BW 14) Zhou Tai (LV 7, SW 0, SP 16, BW 14) Zhang Liao (LV 7, SW 10, SP 10, BW 10) Enemy Units: 1 Cao Cao (LV 8, SW 0, SP 22, BW 24) Allied reinforcements: 0 Enemy reinforcements: Swordsmen (LV 6, SW 24, SP 3, BW 5) x3 Spearmen (LV 6, SW 5, SP 22, BW 5) x3 Archers (LV 6, SW 5, SP 5, BW 22) x2 Guan Yu (LV 7, SW 0, SP 15, BW 15) Zhang Fei (LV 7, SW 0, SP 20, BW 10) Spearmen (LV 5, SW 0, SP 14, BW 3) Swordsmen (LV 5, SW 13, SP 3, BW 3) Archers (LV 5, SW 0, SP 3, BW 15) Heh, you just KNOW by looking at this map that you're going to fight Sun Jian. The fire attack has already been executed, and Cao Cao is the only unit left. He's your first target. After defeating him, Lu Bu will declare war on Wu. Zhou Yu will call in a whole bunch of reinforcements. Notice that there's a new defeat condition: letting Sun Jian escape. Keep that in mind. Go down to defeat Lu Meng and Zhou Tai. Just go further down. Defeat Gan Ning and Huang Gai. Now you'll have to decide whether to go left or down. I usually go down. Zhou Yu and Jiang Qin will advance. After beating them, Sun Jian will order the rest of the troops to advance. You'll encounter some 40-unit ambushes (yawn) along the way. Go down one side but don't defeat the units on the other side just yet. When you get close to Sun Jian, he'll start retreating to the west or east, depending on where you're coming from. He'll call in some more troops (which you'll need in order to catch up with Sun Jian), and Guan Yu and Zhang Fei will appear. Triumph over all units you encounter. At the gate, you'll have to fight 30 swordsmen, causing the castle's south gate to open. Sun Jian then disappears. You'll move into the castle, and Sun Jian will reappear to the south of you, as will Sun Ce, Sun Quan, Zhou Yu and Sun Shang Xiang. Then some reinforcements arrive. Go make sure Zhang Liao doesn't get into trouble. Defeating Sun Jian doesn't end the battle, which you probably saw coming. Sun Ce will take command. Zhang Liao will move to He Fei castle's south gate. Defeat Zhou Yu or Sun Quan, then go up to deal with Taishi Ci and some troops. Defeat both of them (watch out for Fei though, he's tough). Shortly, all of your troop units will have been wiped out, and Guan Xing will appear near Zhao Yun. Just keep moving along, defeat Pang Tong and Guan Xing along the way. Then go over to Guan Yu and beat him. Then, Jiang Wei will appear where Guan Xing did. Move along, defeat Huang Zhong. Since we can't let Liu Bei escape, we'll go after him first. Defeat Zhao Yun and Jiang Wei. Once you get close to Liu Bei, Zhuge Liang will have those boats create a road over the river again. Liu Bei won't run away immediately, so go and defeat him before he does. Ma Chao and Zhuge Liang will move towards you. There's some Dim Sum one space down of where Liu Bei was. Move towards Cao Cao, and he'll send four ambush units at you. Wipe them out, and keep moving. Cao Cao will start retreating to the east. Of course, it's a trap, but we don't care. Follow him. You'll seize Cao Cao's base, and Zhang Liao will start moving to guard it. Once you've crossed the bridge, Cao Cao will take it out. Zhang He and Xiahou Yuan will appear and attack you. Then, Sima Yi will appear in the northwestern camp, and some troops arrive in the northeast. Move up, Triumphing over anyone in your way. Sima Yi lays down a bridge to the north to attack Zhang Liao. He'll also keep summoning troops from his base. While you're mowing down Wei troops, Cao Cao will be rallying his troops, greatly increasing their morale. Zhang Liao will actually start moving up to engage the incoming enemies. Our priority now is to make sure he survives, so let Cao Cao, Dian Wei and Xu Zhu sit in their fort for a while. You should be able to reach Zhang Liao in time. After clearing the enemies near Zhang Liao, go northwest to deal with Sima Yi and his wave of troops. When he dies, he'll summon his last troops, three archer units, to the north of the bridge. Zhang Liao will move to where Sima Yi was, so you can leave him be. Head towards Cao Cao. Defeat Dian Wei and Xu Zhu. Then, you'll have to beat a unit with 99 soldiers to open the gates. Finally, attack Cao Cao. You'll get this little cutscene where you'll see Lu Bu and Cao Cao fighting, when suddenly Sun Jian and Liu Bei appear. (!) You'll have to fight these three at once, like you did once in Hu Lao Gate. Take care of Sun Jian and Liu Bei first, then attack Cao Cao. If you don't feel like losing your powerups, just keep using your Storm attack. You'll get a Close Call, but it doesn't matter. Once you've beaten them, you've won! -------------- 6. Weapon List [WPNS] -------------- Here's a list of every weapon in the game. Most of them are received from treasure boxes or after a battle. If not, I'll tell you how to get it (if I remember). Each section will have certain tags indicating general properties of that kind of weapon (or at least some of them). Here's what they mean: ELM: focuses on elements. Usually has at least one Element effect powerup. DRA: weapons which usually lower your stats, but contain Life drain powerups. ATK: focuses on high attack power, usually sacrificing some Defense, Movement or Life. DEF: defense-oriented weapons. These contain bonuses in Defense, Life, Ranged def, Firmness and Element resist. BOO: certain characters receive stat boosts when equipped with (some of) these weapons. SWI: these weapons change their elements from one weapon to the next. MUS: focuses on Musou attacks. Usually contains Musou accumulate, Musou power, and/or True Musou powerups. Note that similar Valor powerups do not stack. E.g. if a weapon's first Valor powerup is Attack +2 and Atk count +1, and the second is Attack +3, you'll end up with Attack +3 and Atk count +1 after acquiring both powerups. Refer to the Powerups section for explanations on Valor powerups. Also note that some bonuses are listed here, but not in the in-game Encyclopedia. These bonuses exist for one specific character only. Either that character is mentioned here, or he/she is the only one able to equip that weapon anyway. (S) means that this weapon is unlocked from the start. --Swords--(33) BOO/ELM/DEF/MUS Characters: Cao Cao, Sun Jian, Liu Bei, Zhen Ji *Broad Sword (S) Rare: D W Atk: 14 Element: none Skill needed: 0 Bonuses: none Valor powerups: 1.
