Version History VII. Contact -------------------------------------------- | I. I N T R O D U C T I O N | -------------------------------------------- Hey everyone! This is a Soul of Rebirth FAQ for FF: DoS, I hope you enjoy it. I created this FAQ because I've seen a lot of posts in the Message Board asking for help because this is one of the hardest dungeons in FF2. Also, please remember that in order to unlock Soul of Rebirth, you MUST have cleared Final Fantasy 2 and save your Clear Data once the game prompts you to do it. If you have any comments or want to contribute, please check the Contact section. V 1.1 Update: I never expected so many comments, thanks everyone! -------------------------------------------- | II. S O U L O F R E B I R T H | -------------------------------------------- This is it, one of the most enjoyable dungeons in a Final Fantasy game ever. Why do you ask? Well, first of all, it really supports the plot of FF2 by adding certain conversations with party members. Second, you can fight with enemies from other Final Fantasy games (Cait Sith, Catobleplas, Steel Giant, etc.) and finally, who doesn't enjoy challenges? With that said, let's begin the journey! (Whoa, first cheesy comment) ============================================ 1. Opening ============================================ The game begins with Minwu's final words, telling Firion and company to take the ultimate magic, Ultima, as it was his destiny. He then wakes up in the Jade Passage. He hears a voice; strangely, he finds someone who looks just like Admiral Gordon, surrounded by 3 Black Knights. Minwu helps the young man and the adventure begins... ============================================ 2. Party Members ============================================ There are four party members in Soul of Rebirth. 1. Minwu Right-Handed Title: The White Wizard of Fynn Stats at the beginning of SoR: Same as when he left your party in the main game. Equipment: Same as when he left your party in the main game. Weapon Levels: Same as when he left your party in the main game. Magic Levels: Same as when he left your party in the main game. Description: White tunic, red cape, looks like an arabian noble. 2. Scott Left-Handed Title: The Prince of Kashuan Joins party: At the beginning. Stats at the beginning of SoR: 700 HP 100 MP Equipment: Mythril Shield, Mythril Sword, Mythril Armor, Mythril Gloves Mythril Helm. Weapon Levels: Hand to Hand: 2 Dagger: 2 Sword: 8 Staff: 2 Axe: 2 Spear: 2 Bow: 2 Shield: 7 Magic Levels: Fire: 4 Thunder: 4 Blizzard: 4 Cure: 4 Life: 1 Description: Green cape, long blond hair, looks like his brother Gordon. 3. Josef Right-Handed Title: The Rebel Joins party: B2 of the Unknown Cave. Stats at the beginning of SoR: Same as when he died in the main game. Equipment: Same as when he died in the main game. Weapon Levels: Same as when he died in the main game. Magic Levels: Same as when he died in the main game. Description: Bald, green tunic, somewhat fat. Did you know? The story of Josef is told by Zidane in FFIX to Ramuh. 3. Ricard Right-Handed Title: The Last Dragoon Joins party: B5 of the Unknown Cave. Stats at the beginning of SoR: Same as when he died in the main game. Equipment: Same as when he died in the main game. Weapon Levels: Same as when he died in the main game. Magic Levels: Same as when he died in the main game. Description: Purple dragoon armor, wyvern helm, lance; he's a dragoon, what did you expect ^^ ? ============================================ 3. General Boss Strategies ============================================ This is the newest section of my FAQ, for those of you having troubles with some bosses, here are some general tips. 1. Almost every boss can be cursed! -Contributed by: Gary Lai Use this to your advantage. The Ancient sword is in the first cave to the town. This sword, can curse enemies but some bosses too! Here's a list of some bosses that can be cursed: -Roundworm -Dark Dragon -Lucifer -Ultima Weapon With the Ancient Sword, you can curse some enemies too, nasty enemies like the Dark Behemoth can be taken easily this way. 2. Buffs are your friends. Have Minwu cast Blink + Protect + Shell on every Boss Battle you have trouble. Also, be sure to make some of your party members learn Aura, as it enhances the potency of your attacks. Finally, cast Haste so your fighters will attack more times. 3. If you can't beat it... Just keep training a little bit, stats increase very easily in this game so train outside Machanon until you think you're ready, no need to rush! 4. Yet another cheap strategy -Contributed by: Forrest M. Lee If you happen to have the spell Teleport and you level it to level 8 or better, most of the Bosses can be Banished after a few tries, this can save you a lot of time. Note: There are 2 bosses that are immune to this: -Ultima Weapon -Light Emperor ============================================ 4. Guide ============================================ ------------------------------ 0) QUICK TIPS BEFORE STARTING: ------------------------------ 1. Save your Ethers until the last second! 1.1 Update: Richard Garyson sent me this, "Hi, I read your FAQ on Gamefaqs and I just wanted to add one more thing about Ethers. If you use an Ether in battle you are given more magic points than when you use one in the item menu screen. The most MP I have ever gotten from an ether in the Menu screen is 34, the least I have ever gotten in battle was 50." You only start with 10 Ethers, try not to use them all in the beginning, use them ONLY in an emergency. 2. It's better to go overprepared than to go underprepared. 3. Save often! 4. Fast Skill-Up trick sent by Tijmen Landsdaal, "I have found a convenient trick to level up your characters. Minwu, for example, levels up his MP fast. If you are at a decent level, go and fight a weak monster in the Jade passage. Make sure you have only one of your characters in front of the party ( I prefer Joseph because he has little HP ), equip one with a bow ( I prefer Ricard because he has to train his strength ) and use the other two as healers. Use Minwu and Scott to heal everyone, use Joseph to attack Minwu and use Ricard to attack Joseph. They will not lose any HP because you will heal them again. If your MP runs out, kill the monster and your party will level up big time." The above paragraph MAY be common knowledge, but still, it is a great way to level up characters. ------------------- A) The Unknown Cave ------------------- The first fight you'll have is a boss fight against: ------------- BOSS FIGHT #1 ------------- Sergeantx2 HP: 420x2 Black Knight HP: 1140 Difficulty: * Strategy: Cast Protect & Blink as soon as you enter the fight. '????' can either use his sword or his magic, it doesn't matter. Minwu should keep healing until the battle ends. If your Minwu has Black Magic, use it, it will make the battle even easier. After that, Scott joins your party. ------------------------------------------ |Bestiary / Monsters | | Key: | | W - Weakness | | R - Resistance | | A - Absorbs | | N - Note | ------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | | Weakness: This is fairly obvious, it will mention an element the | | monster is weak to. | | Resistance: If the monster has Element resistance damage or not. And | | if so, which element. | | Absorbs: If a monster resists AND absorbs the damage done to him | | with a certain element. | | Note: Special notes made about certain enemies. | ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Phew with that done, let's get truly started! The Unknown Cave B1: New Enemies -Bigfoot W: Fire A: Ice -Death Horn W: Fire R: Ice, Body, Mind A: Death -Gil Snapper W: Ice R: Lighting, Poison -Sea Serpent W: Thunder R: Fire, Poison. N: May paralyze when it attacks. There's a chest NE of your starting position that contains an Elixir. Head all the way to the west to reach B2. The Unknown Cave B2: New Enemies: -Glasya Labolas N: He hits HARD, be careful. -Soul Eater R: Body, Mind N: Pray that you encounter these guys a lot. -Gigas Worm W: Fire R: Body, Mind A: Death -Death Knight -Giga Parasite General Note: You can face every enemy encountered thus far here. Head North and you'll notice that someone is near you, try to talk with him. After witnessing the event, another Boss Fight ensues. ------------- BOSS FIGHT #2 ------------- Zombie Borghen HP: 2500 Difficulty: * Strategy: Cast Protect & Blink as soon as you enter the fight as always. Scott should use his magic. Heal as neccesary. Despite having high HP, he should die in no time. Comment: As if it wasn't enough, we have to fight this guy a 3rd time! Once you kill Borghen a 3rd time, Josef joins your party. Get the Thief's Gloves and run across the room, be sure to get the next chest, it contains Hellfire. After that, you'll see a giant pond, keep heading south and open the chest to get an Ancient Sword, be sure to equip it right away. Keep heading north and enter the door to reach B3. The Unknown Cave B3: New Enemies: -Flan Princess (WTF?) A: Fire, Ice N: May confuse. They drop ethers. -Pyrolisk -Beast Devil R: Lightning, Ice, Fire General Note: You can face every enemy encountered thus far here. Random Comment: I found it funny that a Flan can be a princess. Go around the room, crossing the waterfall, getting the Silver Curiass along the way. Continue climbing down...guess what? The secret shop is still here! Just get behind the waterfall at the bottom and press 'A'. Secret Shop: Berserk Tome: 10000 Haste Tome: 20000 Holy Tome: 20000 Flare Tome: 40000 Get anything you can afford and sell unused equipment and useless items. Head a little west and you'll notice 3 doors, choose the first door from the left and continue to B4. The Unknown Cave B4: New Enemies: -Miss Vamp W: Fire R: Lightning, Ice, Body, Poison, Mind, Death, Matter A: Death General Note: You can face every enemy encountered thus far here. As soon as you reach B4, head a little to the west then to the north to find a chest containing a Hi-Potion. Keep heading north to find a room with 3 chests (Golden Shield, Demon Spear and Mythril Armor). Exit the room, head west to reach yet another chest containg an useful Aura Tome. Head south to reach the stairs to B5. The Unknown Cave B5: I didn't find any new enemies in this floor. Status Check: Minwu: 957 HP 143 MP Scott: 1031 HP 130 MP Josef: 531 HP (ouch) 5 MP (double ouch) Consumables Left: Phoenix Down x3 Ether x3 Elixir Sleepgrass x5 Hellfire Eye Drops x2 Antidote Hi-Potion Unicorn Horn Walk around the room and you'll see a chest with a peculiar monster nearby. Heal up and challenge it... You are stopped by Ricard, and together you attack the Roundworm. ------------- BOSS FIGHT #3 ------------- Roundworm HP: 2500 Difficulty: So easy that it isn't funny. Strategy: Ricard should kill it in one or two turns. Scott should use his magic. Heal as neccesary. If you're having trouble with this boss, I suggest you restart >.< Comment: I swear random encounters are tougher than these bosses. Yay! We're saved! (Or at least I am) Ricard is here! Now those monsters will learn! Ahem, um... anyways. Continue north to open a chest with a Protect Ring (!) inside. Then later on you'll find another chest with a Hi-Potion inside. And next to it, the stairs to B6. The Unknown Cave B6: I didn't find any new enemies in this floor. Status Check: Minwu: 992 HP 143 MP Scott: 1066 HP 130 MP Josef: 619 HP 5 MP Ricard:1278 HP (yay) 10 MP Consumables Left: Phoenix Down x3 Ether x3 Elixir Sleepgrass x6 Hellfire Eye Drops x2 Antidote x2 Hi-Potion x2 Unicorn Horn This floor is boring, you must be tired from all of this exploring aren't you? Just walk along the room to finally reach... Pandaemonium! ... ... ... Or is it? What? No Pandaemonium yet? Yay! Happy music! A town, perhaps? Time to rest! ----------- B) Machanon ----------- You arrive at a strange town, head to the pub for a nice event. The plot is getting very confusing isn't it? Some of these NPC's speech makes me sad... :'( There's a lot to buy in here. Let's start with the Item Shop. Machanon's Item Shop: Phoenix Down 500 Potion 30 Cross 50 Ether 1000 Hi-Potion 150 Mallet 60 Gaia Drum 3000 Eye Drops 40 Maiden's Kiss 500 Elixir 50000 Antidote 30 Gold Needle 500 Buy what you need then head to the weapon shop. Machanon's Weapon Shop: Knife 40 Staff 50 Broadsword 100 Bow 20 Javelin 80 Axe 100 Mythril Knife 400 Power Staff 8000 Wing Sword 5000 Ice Bow 5000 Flame Lance 15000 Ogre Killer 15000 Next comes the magic shop for Scott and/or Minwu Machanon's Magic Shop: Blink Tome 300 Cure Tome 100 Esuna Tome 600 Protect Tome 300 Fire Tome 150 Life Tome 1000 Shell Tome 300 Thunder Tome 150 Sap Tome 1000 Basuna Tome 600 Blizzard Tome 150 Mini Tome 2000 And at last but not least, the armor shop, located in the NW corner. Machanon's Armor Shop: Mythril Shield 300 Buckler 50 Ice Shield 5000 Mythril Helm 300 Leather Cap 50 Giant's Helm 500 Mythril Armor 700 Clothes 20 Knight's Armor 5000 Mythril Gloves 500 Leather Gloves 30 Giant's Gloves 1500 V. 1.1 Update! If you think you're ready, you can challenge Ultima right away, please refer to section D of the Guide for more information. It's reccommended that you go into the Ultima 'Tower' anyways to get the stat boosts. (Thanks to my friend Gary Lai for reminding me this!). Take your time to shop for weapons, armor, magic and items. When you're ready, head to the northeast corner to find another teleporter, this time it will take you to... --------------------- C) The Unknown Palace --------------------- Unknown Palace 1F New Enemies: -Mini Satana R: Lightning, Ice, Fire -Bloodbones W: Fire R: Ice, Body, Poison, Death, Mind, Matter A: Death -Purobolos W: Ice R: Lightning A: Fire -Li'l Murderer W: Lightning -Chimera Brain A: Lightning, Ice, Fire -Orukat R: Lightning, Ice, Fire, Body, Poison, Death, Matter, Mind -Warg Wolf After my first battle in here, I ran like a little girl to Machanon because I was too weak for these new monsters... XD I suggest you do the same until you feel comfortable. *2 hours later* Here we go! A QUICK REMINDER: You CAN'T warp out of here, so make sure you're well prepared before trying to reach the final floor! -Bring a lot of Ethers, Phoenix Downs, Hi-Potions and Gold Needles! -GOLD NEEDLES! These are your friends! There are some monsters that will petrify you, so try to bring a nice quantity of them. Status Check If you plan on beating this palace, I suggest you have at least this setting: Minwu 1728 HP 381 MP Scott 2072 HP 195 MP Josef 1740 HP 26 MP Ricard 2136 HP 30 MP Ok, go around the room until you reach some stairs, then head south, go around the hall to reach 2F. Unknown Palace 2F New Enemies: -Gold Golem N: Use Blink so he will miss most of his attacks. W: Lightning R: Ice, Fire, Body, Poison, Death, Mind, Matter -Lamia Matriarch -Black Dragon N: No real weaknesses. -Chaos Rider R: Lightning, Ice, Fire, Body, Poison, Death, Mind, Matter -Malboro Menace W: Ice, Fire A: Body, Poison, Death, Mind, Matter -Cait Sith -Dark Magician W: Weapons Head south then climb some stairs to the east. After that, head north and you'll see a chest with an Ether inside. Go back south then east, go down the stairs. From here just follow the path to 3F, no real forks (*whew*). Unknown Palace 3F New Enemies: -Catoblepas -Twin Heads W: Ice A: Fire Head Southeast of your position to reach the legendary Genji Gloves! After opening the chest, head to the northwest part of the room, then head a little to the south to reach the teleporter to 4F. Unknown Palace 4F New Enemies: -Dark Soul A: Lightning, Ice, Fire, Body, Poison, Death, Mind, Matter N: He's very weak, just kill him with weapons. -Dark Behemoth -Mother Brain W: Mind R: Body, Death Seeing as this is a mirror of Pandaemonium (it is, if you haven't noticed) the exit to the teleporter is in the second door from the left, but there are a couple of treasures in the other three doors, so let's check them out! First Door from the left Head to the northern part of the room to find a guarded chest that contains a Ribbon. You will battle... ------------- BOSS FIGHT #4 ------------- Steel Giant HP: 6500 Difficulty: **** if you don't know what to do Strategy: Blink is your friend, Scott should cast Thunder because the Giant is weak to Lightning Magic. Heal EVERY turn, the giant will hit for 1200+ each turn. He absorbs Fire magic. Comment: Woah! Bosses got considerably tougher in the Palace! After that head to the lobby of 4F. Skip the second door from the left and head to the first door from the right, get ready for some exploring because we'll be getting Soul of Rebirth's best equipment. First Door from the right Head to the Northeastern corner of this room and open a chest, you'll find one of the best (if not the best) lances in the game, the wyvern lance for Ricard, you're so happy aren't you? Well, before you can enjoy your new toy, a Black Dragon attacks... ------------- BOSS FIGHT #5 ------------- Dark Dragon HP: 5000 Difficulty: ***1/2 Strategy: Blink, Protect, Shell; any buffs you can cast will be useful in this battle, he's been a random enemy for the last 4 floors, but he STILL hits hard, he has a nasty Flare XIV spell, be careful and keep healing! As of now, your damage dealer should be Josef so 'pwn' the dragon with his fists. The dragon has no real weaknesses. Comment: The award to the boss with the most palette swaps goes to: Color Dragon! After that backtrack a bit to the southwest, you'll see a fork leading either south (to the lobby) or to the northwest, choose the latter, keep heading west till you see a strange pillar then try to find a secret passage near the wall, and you'll come across another room, with a Wild Rose (?) inside, but not so fast! It's another guarded chest! ------------- BOSS FIGHT #6 ------------- Lucifer HP: 10000 (Not a typo, ten thousand) Difficulty: **1/2 Strategy: Cast any buffs that you think are useful, she's a tough one but she has crappy magic and attacks, the only problem should be her high defense and her Drain XVI spell. You know what to do, just keep healing. This battle won't be tough, just long. She has no real weaknesses and she resists most magic. Comment: Palette Swap of Astaroth, by the way, isn't Lucifer a man? Well, it looks like the Wild Rose is the Masamune of Soul of Rebirth! Equip it on Scott right away! After that head to the lobby of 4F and go to the second door from the RIGHT. Second Door from the right Just follow the path, there are no forks, you'll come across another (guarded) chest containing a Stardust Rod (!!!) ------------- BOSS FIGHT #7 ------------- Yamatano Orochi HP: 8000 Difficulty: *1/2 If you got the Wild Rose and the Wyvern Lance Strategy: Cast any buffs that you think are useful, He absorbs elemental magic, just keep healing, you should kill him in no time thanks to the Wild Rose and the Wyvern Lance Comment: Palette Swap of Tiamat (Not the FF1 Tiamat, the crappy FF2 guardian) After that head to the lobby of 4F and go to the remaining door. Second Door from the left Head down the hallway to your right, then keep heading that way until you reach the top of the screen, after that, head south to spot a guarded chest that contains a pair of bracers, Open and and you will fight... ------------- BOSS FIGHT #8 ------------- Beelzebub Soul HP: 8000 Difficulty: *** Strategy: There's no Blood Sword to help you this time. Blink is your best friend as always, Scott should cast Fire. keep healing, the beelzebub will go down in no time. The Beelzebub Soul absorbs Lighting Magic, be careful. Comment: Meh, another 'recycled' boss... Keep following the path and you'll reach the teleporter. Note: By now you should be killing every single enemy in 1 or 2 hits. If you keep having problems with monsters, I suggest you backtrack to Machanon to train more. Now you're in the upper part of 4F, follow the corridor to reach yet another teleporter. Unknown Palace 7F New Enemies: Steel Giant as a random enemy. Walk to the east and a little to the north to recieve the Genji Helm! Backtrack south then walk east and run to the north. Turn to the left and continue the path to reach another warping tile. The only dangerous thing on this floor is that you can encounter Steel Giant as a random enemy. Unknown Palace 8F New Enemies: N/A You start on the SE corner of the room. There are items in each of the corners. Southwest corner: Aegis Shield Northeast corner: Genji Armor Northwest corner: Teleporter to 9F Unknown Palace 9F Meh. Boring room. Head to the SE corner to reach the final teleporter. Tired already? Don't give up, because... Unknown Palace 10F So what, surprised? You're in the final floor already! This isn't a challenge anymore *sigh*. This is it, recover all HP and MP, you'll need it! Trust me! Use your Elixirs, Ethers, everything! Actually no, the final boss is very easy, but recover your stats anyway, Status Check: I was able to beat him with the following stats + Genji Armor + Legendary Weapons: Minwu 2292 HP 432 MP Scott 2547 HP 228 MP Josef 2779 HP 38 MP Ricard 2692 HP 41 MP Approach the Emperor and talk with him. After a lenghty -yet very cool- event, the final battle begins. ---------- FINAL BOSS ----------- Emperor HP: 25000 Difficulty: ** Strategy: Again, there's no Blood Sword to help you this time. The battle will be long, but not hard, cast Aura to get stronger hits. Protect + Shell + Blink will make this easier. The final boss is a JOKE if you have Genji Armor and the Legendary Weapons. Starfall XVI is the only 'dangerous' spell he has. But then again, it only hits for 400+ HP and he uses it rarely. He also like to use Flare XVI. Finally, as long as you have Blink with you, he'll miss his attacks. Comment: This is it! Good Luck! Enjoy the ending! You've completely beaten FF2 now! ---------------------- D) Chamber of the Seal ---------------------- There's this little sidequest you can do to get the Tome of Ultima again. Beware, the boss has 15000 HP, so be prepared before facing him. If you think you're ready, head to the SE corner of Machanon and hop on the teleporter... Looks familiar? Yes! It's the Ultima seal again! Head north for another short scene. Enter the chamber, examine the four crystals to gain stat boosts (+10 for each stat! Thanks Gary Lai for the exact number!) After that, check the central crystal, Ultima will challenge you. ------------- BOSS FIGHT #9 ------------- Ultima Weapon HP: 15000 Difficulty: **1/2, **** if you are not prepared. Strategy: Cast Protect + Blink on your warriors. Try to stay alive as this will be a long battle. You can try to curse this beast by using the Ancient Weapon. Cast your most powerful magic (Flare if you have it) If you're well prepared and at least 1500 HP on everyone and 200+ MP on at least 2 of your characters you should do fine. Just keep healing because he has the habit of attacking in a very nasty way. Comment: Ultima Weapon looks like a Behemoth? Nice try Square-Enix... Congratulations on beating Ultima Weapon, your reward? A Tome of Ultima of course. -------------------------------------------- | III. F A Q | -------------------------------------------- 1. How do I unlock Soul of Rebirth? Clear Final Fantasy II and save Clear Data once the credits end. 2. What do you get for clearing SoR? As of now, I have no idea, just more replay value for Final Fantasy I & II I guess ^^. 3. How long is Soul of Rebirth? It took me 6 hours to beat the first time, well, that's because I had to write the whole script and the guide =P. 4. What is a good way to raise MP? Have Minwu cast Sap on himself. 5. What is a good way to raise HP? Attack yourself =P. 6. What is the best weapon for.. Minwu? The Stardust Rod Scott? The Wild Rose Ricard? The Wyvern Lance Josef? His hands ^^. The bracers you get are for him. 7. Can I beat Ultima Weapon without the Ancient Sword? Sure you can! If you fail miserably the first time, try to gain more stats, this Ultima Weapon is a joke compared to other Weapons. ------------------------------------------------------- | IV. S O U L O F R E B I R T H B E S T I A R Y | ------------------------------------------------------- The bestiary will include HP, stats, resistances and weaknesses for all monsters, for now, it will only be a checklist of every monster that appears in Soul of Rebirth. I'm missing monster number 129, if you have it, please tell me what it is. Stats for every enemy coming soon. Apart from HP, MP, attack, etc data, this section will feature the RAWN system used in my Walkthrough: ------------------------------------------ |Bestiary / Monsters | | Key: | | W - Weakness | | R - Resistance | | A - Absorbs | | N - Note | ------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | | Weakness: This is fairly obvious, it will mention an element the | | monster is weak to. | | Resistance: If the monster has Element resistance damage or not.
