What's New -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Version 1.1 (2/16/04): All errors within the walkthrough have been fixed, making it 100% complete and correct when playing through Normal mode. Also, a brief explanation on shine-sparking and such have been included in an "Overview" section of this file. Enjoy. Version 1.05 (2/12/04): Started replaying the game a second time; so far I caught a flaw in the walkthrough just after beating Kraid. It's fixed now, so there shouldn't be further problems if you follow it from start to end. More to come likely. Version 1.0 (2/9/04): The first version of this FAQ. The walkthrough is 100% complete at this point, but I'm sure there will be things to add/fix in the Secrets section, so feel free to email me should changes be needed. Otherwise, enjoy! ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 2. Introduction -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Just over a year after the first GBA Metroid, we see a remake of the NES classic as well. In addition to it being a port of the original Metroid game, there are new abilities, new items, and even an entirely new area to explore. It even fixed some of the obvious problems with the first one (an actual map, for instance). The only two things bad about this game I think, are its length (it can be beaten fully in just about 3 hours), and the fact that it's "dumbed down" for younger audiences. That's why we see Chozo Statues pretty much everywhere. Nonetheless, Samus is back, and if you're up for adventure, this is DEFINITELY worth your while! ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 3. Story -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Emergency Order Exterminate all Metroid organisms on planet Zebes... And defeat the mechanical life-form, Mother Brain. "Planet Zebes... I called this place home once, in peaceful times, long before evil haunted the caverns below. Now, I shall finally tell the tale of my first battle here... My so-called Zero Mission." -Samus Aran ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 4. Controls -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Left/Right: Move Samus left or right Down: Squat down (press twice to roll into a ball, Morph Ball required) Up: Stand up, aim upward (hold while jumping to grab onto certain ceilings) Start: Pause game, bring up submenu Select: Switch between map regions on submenu A: Jump (press while moving Left or Right to flip), confirm selection on menu screens B: Shoot a beam/missiles (move Control Pad to aim), cancel selection on menu screens L: Aim diagonally, access sleep mode on submenu R: Toggle between Missiles, Power Bombs, and regular blaster (hold while pressing B to shoot Missiles), check status on submenu ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 5. Overview -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ============== Shine-Sparking ============== Perhaps _the_ most useful technique to know in Metroid is the shine-spark. It basically refers to the action of holding a charge after running/building it up with the Speed Booster. When you get a charge, you'll start glowing red; press Down to hold it, thus shine-sparking has occurred. At that point, you can move around for a few seconds before the charge totally dissipates. However, you can dash in several directions by pressing A and the direction you wish to go (forward, up-left, up, and up-right). This will allow you to crash through special walls/blocks to enter otherwise inaccessible passageways. Be warned though; it takes skill to effectively use the shine- spark ability. You can also do the above in ball form by pressing A and holding in the direction you wish to move, allowing you to shoot through smaller passages. ============ Wall-Jumping ============ A semi-unknown ability Samus has from the start is the ability to wall jump. To do this, somersault towards a wall while holding in the direction of the wall. When you make contact, press A and hold the opposite directional button to do a wall jump. This would be useful for climbing up narrow corridors without the Space Jump. ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 6. Walkthrough -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= NOTE: This walkthrough was written based on playing the Normal difficulty setting. Also, you may notice I also walk you through getting 100% of the items for the course of the guide. If you don't want a given item, it's your choice, but I wrote this guide under the assumption that you used it from start to finish, and therefore shouldn't have problems getting everything. ======== Brinstar ======== Starting off, head to the left. Jump up the ledges and drop down the other side, and grab the Morph Ball from the pedestal ahead. You now have your first item within seconds of starting! To use it, press Down twice to roll into a ball (Up to uncurl). Anyway, roll right out of this area, and continue to the right a bit. Fight the enemies to get used to shooting (you can also shoot diagonally, and crouch down to aim low, keep in mind). Go through the door ahead into the next room. In the hall, simply continue to the next room in front of you. In this room, run to the right, watching out for the enemies that'll fall on you from above. Roll through the passage ahead, and you'll come to a Chozo Statue. Curl into a ball and sit on its glowing hand, and a new path will open behind it. You'll also get to see where you should be going on the map. Your energy will also be recharged, yay! Now, continue right to the next room. At the bottom of the vertical area, go right for now into the Save Room. Save, then exit. Make your way up the ledges in the center of this vertical room, defeating the various enemies crawling around. When you come to the first doorway on the left side, enter it. Here, defeat the enemies on the ceiling, then shoot out the rocks blocking the small passage. Roll through it and continue into the following area. There, shoot open the egg the Chozo Statue holds, and collect the Long Beam! This basically gives your shot better distance, which helps a lot. Go back to the previous room, and head right. You can't go the same way you came, so jump to the upper platform and shoot out the blocks, then roll through and jump into the room above. There, roll to the left and shoot the blocks above, then jump up some platforms and continue left. Run to the left some more and hop out at the end. Since you won't be able to make it far to the right for now, head left instead. In the next room, you'll find a two-headed statue in your way; all you have to do here is approach it. Go back out of here, and head all the way right to the far doorway. A spider creature will fall out of the ceiling; defeat it in these narrow quarters, then go through the now-opened door. Activate the Chozo Statue in here to be shown an unmapped area to visit. When you're let go, continue into the vertical chamber again. Drop down a bit until you reach a doorway to the right blocked by a long line of blocks. Shoot them out (you can reach them all now with the Long Beam), and enter that room. Go across the bridge here into the following chamber. Over here, you'll spot a red door directly ahead of you. In order to open it, you need Missiles, which we will get shortly. Anyway, go down and roll right, and enter the first door on the right. Save in here, obviously, then exit and continue the journey downward. At the bottom, head right into the next room. Go right a bit and jump to reach the first Missile Tank (5) on the ledge above the lava. Now, return to the left and a giant worm creature will surround you. To beat it, shoot 3 Missiles into its eye when it opens. Be quick to do this whenever an opportunity opens, since if this creature leaves prematurely, you'll have to wait until later to face it again. Nonetheless, if you win here, you receive the Charge Beam! From here, return to the Save Room and save what you just accomplished. Next, go up and blast open the red door with a Missile. In the next room, simply go all the way right while defeating the small flying creatures. You can't go elsewhere in the following area, so continue to the right. In this large room, start by going right and jumping onto the platform in the air. Jump onto a small ledge on the left, and walk into a hidden room. Blast the hive with a couple Missiles to clear it (if you run out, your regular weapon will do the job), then grab the Missile Tank (10). Go back right and jump across platforms while blasting more hives, until you reach the far side. Then, drop down and head into the next room. At the small room, just go right into yet another area. You'll see a wall in your way; blast it apart to continue. Clear the bottom blocks to reveal a Missile Tank (15). Further ahead, you'll find an Energy Tank (1). After that, blast through more walls and enemies, and jump over the lava. In the vertical room ahead, go down first. Open the door with a Missile, then go into the Map Room. Connect to the machine inside, and you'll load a map of the rest of Brinstar (not including hidden green areas). Back out of this room and make your way up the ledges as far as you can go. At that point, go into a room to the left. There are 2 paths you can take; straight ahead is a Save Room, which I recommend visiting. Then, take the top path into a seemingly empty room. Jump to the upper ledge and roll through the passage, and open the red door at the end. Inside, shoot the egg and claim the Bombs from the Chozo Statue. To demonstrate their use, roll under the statue and blast the 2 blocks in your way with Bombs (in ball form, press B). In the hidden chamber behind, bomb the special blocks, then use bombs to bounce up to the upper ledges. At the top, get the Missile Tank (20) upgrade. Now, go back right to the entrance of this room, to find you can't escape yet. Bomb the wall below, then destroy all the parasites that attach to you to open the door. Go down to the Save Room, then back to the vertical chamber a few rooms back. From the vertical room, go down and enter the next room to the left. Go left through the long corridors until you make it to the small chamber with cracked blocks in the middle. Bomb them and drop into the room below. Defeat the enemies, and enter the room at the bottom. Kill the flying enemies that come your way, then shoot a Missile at the red door and go into the Chozo Statue room. Roll up and sit in its hand, and you'll be led into Norfair as your next destination. Go back right a couple rooms, then up and to the left. Get through the large hive room, and onward to the small chamber ahead of that. Along the thin bridge in that room, bomb it to reveal an opening. As you fall into the hidden area, you'll see a Missile Tank to the right. As you fall in ball form, drop a bomb right there to clear the way to it. Then, quickly jump back up the ledges and get onto the ledge above the tank. In ball form, roll off the ledge, then hold Right and go into the alcove to get the Missile Tank (25). Go back up to the top area (you can blast through the block platforms, too), and continue left to another vertical chamber. Once you get there, since we haven't done this before, head upward. When you reach another doorway, go right into that room. In the long room, go right and defeat some enemies, then at the barrier, shoot the red part and it'll rise, allowing you to roll through. Roll into the alcove ahead and bomb your way through, then move on. There are several tubes here; jump to the top one and use a bomb to bounce to the highest ledge. Roll through it to the end, then continue along to the next room. Fight the single enemy floating around, then go into the Save Room ahead. Do what you wish here, then go to the following area. There, go right and collect the Missile Tank (30) on the ledge above the lava. After that, backtrack a bit to the vertical room, and go down a bit, then go into the Save Room. Now that you've saved again, it's time to continue. Drop down to the bottom of the room, and go right into the long corridor. Make your way right, past where you got the Missiles earlier, and you'll see a ledge. Jump onto it, roll to the right, and bomb the wall open. Keep going while defeating the enemies that come out of the lava/ground, then enter the room at the end. Go down the elevator into the region known as Norfair. A brief cutscene will ensue, with the Mother Brain viewing Samus in the distance. ======= Norfair ======= Upon arriving here, drop down to the left platform below. Bomb the floor and you'll fall through to the bottom section. Then, enter the room to the right and save your game. Return to the left area, and enter the left area this time. Go left a bit, and you'll spot a Missile Tank on a high ledge. If you want it, stand below and to the left/right of it, and curl into ball form. Then, rapidly press B to constantly set bombs/bounce in the air. You should make it up to that ledge, claiming another Missile Tank (35). If not, you can wait until later in the game. Anyway, go left and bomb through the wall, then go into the next room. Jump up the ledges and take the elevator going up, into Crateria. ======== Crateria ======== When you get up to this third region, bomb the right wall, and go right into a watery room. Go right and into the water, and bomb the block in the left corner. Bomb your way down into a hidden area, then go left and get a Missile Tank (40). Get out of the water, and jump onto the ledge in the air, then make your way up a few more ledges. On one of the upper ones, bomb the wall to clear the way, then go left and up into a Chozo Ruins room. There, use the Bombs as you roll through the passage, to get through it. In the room ahead, keep going to the right until you reach a Chozo Statue. Blast its egg and take the Unknown Item. Apparently it's incompatible with your current suit, but it has an effect on the large blocks in this room; you can now destroy them! Go left, destroying those blocks, then blast the one in the ground and take a Missile Tank (45). Shoot the left wall to clear a ledge so you can jump out, then go into the left room again. Bomb your way to the left, then get under the large block and bomb it. Jump out to the area above and go left. Jump up several platforms, and go into the door inside a giant statue's mouth. In this room, go left and you'll drop through the bridge into a large area below. Go left and blast the wall, then roll up inside and bomb/bounce your way up/left into another room. There, collect the Power Grip from the statue inside. You can now grab onto ledges and climb atop them that way! Go back out of this room, and bomb your way right again. You'll see the tower in the background is now rising; when it stops, numerous platforms will appear. Jump up them to the top, then enter the left room. Go left through here, blasting the blocks in the way, and making use of the Power Grip. In the following room, drop down a bit and you'll find Samus' ship. At the ship, you can go inside and recover your energy/save your game, so keep that in mind if you're in the area. Next, go right and into another room. Climb up the ledge and bomb the block in your way, and continue onward to another room. You'll be back at the elevator once again. So, why not go back down into Norfair? ======= Norfair ======= Back here, make your way down, but don't go into the first door yet. Jump and climb into a passage to the left, and drop down to the bottom area, defeating the purple enemies there. In the new room to the right, make your way all the way to the end. There, you'll find another Missile Tank (50); take it, then backtrack to the elevator. Climb back out to the upper area, and go into the other room to the right. Go all the way right through here (if you didn't get the tank on the high ledge earlier, you can now with the Power Grip equipped) to the end, then continue onward until you encounter a Save Room. After resting in the Save Room, continue into the room to the right. In there, use the Power Grip to jump to the high ledges, and head to the right. Make your way through here by going up/down platforms on the way. You'll notice a Missile Tank above; you'll be back here shortly to claim it. Go into the room at the end, and make your way up through that vertical area. Enter the first room to the left side, and you'll be in a lava room. Be VERY careful not to jump into the lava, since you'll lose lots of health quickly that way. When you make it to the far side, go into that room, and get the Ice Beam from the Chozo Statue there. Since you can't open green doors right now, you have to find other means to leave here. Roll under the platform and bomb your way through, then use the Ice Beam to freeze the enemy above. Jump onto it to make it over the wall, then head into the next room. Go into the left room and save your game if you wish. Back in the previous room, freeze the enemies above, then jump onto one, freeze the next, and so on. When you make it to the top, go into the room to the right. Freeze the enemy that jumps out of the lava, and use it to reach the Chozo Statue. Activate it to find your next destination in the lair of Kraid. Once you recover, continue right and freeze some more enemies. Jump across them to safely pass over the lava, and enter the next room. There, freeze the enemies and jump across, then grab onto the ledge and roll through the passage. Jump and shoot the wall to the right to reveal an opening; jump to it and climb on to get a Missile Tank (55). Then, continue right into another room. Go right and you'll fall through the floor, into the vertical chamber below. Continue down to the bottom area, then enter the left room. In this room again, go left and shoot open the floor, specifically above where an enemy below jumps in and out of the lava. With it cleared, when the enemy comes into the air above, freeze it and use it to jump to a high ledge. Go right up there and get the next Missile Tank (60). After that, continue left to the Save Room, then into the elevator area. Freeze the enemies in the center area, as you jump to the top ledge. Then, ride the elevator back up to Brinstar. ======== Brinstar ======== Back in this area, go into the left room. Make your way through there by blasting the enemies and bombing the walls in your way. In the vertical room at the end, go up a bit and enter the Save Room on the right side. After you save, exit and continue going up through this room. When you reach the top area, freeze the enemies moving back and forth, and jump to a small passage in the top left wall. Rolling into that room, go down and get the Missile Tank (65). Then, bomb the floor and roll your way down and left into the other vertical chamber. From here, go down a bit more and you'll notice a ledge to the left. Freeze the enemy and use it as a stepping stone to jump onto that ledge. Bomb the floor and roll into that room. Make your way down while defeating the enemies, and falling through the floors, then at the bottom, go left and take the next Missile Tank (70). Fall through some more floor, then roll out to the right (you can't get the other upgrade just yet). Continue down to the bottom and enter the right room to save your game. Next, go into the left chamber and recover fully with the Chozo Statue. Continuing onward, roll through the low passage, and defeat the enemies in the ceiling. Shoot at the ceiling and you'll find an Energy Tank (2) up there. Roll up below it and press B constantly to bounce your way up to it. Once you get it, continue left into the next room. There, roll up and bomb the bridge, then drop to the bottom area. Before entering the room though, roll around on the platform to the left, and bomb it. You'll fall into a cannon below; use a bomb and you'll be launched straight up through the room, to a hidden area. Hold Right and roll into a small passage, leading to a Missile Tank (75). Head back to the bottom and enter the room to the right. Simply ride the elevator in there to reach Kraid's Lair. ============ Kraid's Lair ============ As soon as you arrive here, go down and enter the first room on the left; it's a Save Room. After you save, roll up and bomb bounce yourself into a hidden passage in the left wall. Go into that room and collect yet another Missile Tank (80). Go back to the Save Room and save again, then go back to the main corridor. This time, use a Missile and go into the room across the way. Go right and jump across several platforms, leading to a Missile Tank (85). Continue on, blasting your way through the tough-skinned enemies and hollow walls along the way. Then, go into the next room at the end. In this room, go right and bomb the floor to drop into a hidden passage. Bomb another section of floor, and you'll drop into a cannon. Shoot yourself up a bit, then fall onto a ledge to the left. Follow it down and around to another Missile Tank (90). Roll down and to the right, and use the bomb trick to bounce up to the top ledge. Defeat the enemies crawling on the walls above, then use the Power Grip and jump back and forth, grabbing onto the ledges (you'll have to shoot diagonally to clear a blue block in the way, too). When you get to the very top, go left into that room. Here, shoot the cracked blocks in the ceiling, then jump through the opening there. Keep moving into the following room ahead, being careful of the acid below. In the room ahead, shoot through the blocks and drop down a narrow gap to the area below. Drop into the cannon and shoot yourself back up a bit. On the way down, place a bomb next to a blue block in the right wall. Then, blast yourself up a second time, this time holding Right so you land in that alcove. Bomb into that room, then use a Missile to enter the red door. Go right and roll yourself up inside the pedestal to activate it. Then, shoot the red ball on the ceiling; you'll see a device move along on the ceiling track. Jump onto it to move across the room, collecting an Energy Tank (3) along the way. At the other side, go into the Save Room ahead. Save, then in the next room, drop through the floor and go into a room to the left. Head through the small room there, into an acid--filled room ahead. In there, use the magnetic pulley on the ceiling, and the Acid Worm will come out of the lava to attack. Look at the Bosses section for assistance beating this creature. Upon defeating the worm, bomb the floor and fall through, then go left across the small ledges. Jump and shoot the cracked wall, then go into that room. Bomb your way in and defeat the enemies, then take the Missile Tank (95). Go back to the battle room, and go up into the left chamber. Use the cannon and shoot to the top area, then enter the right room. Get across this room via the magnet pulley, then when you make it to the vertical chamber, go all the way to the bottom. Go into the left room, and make your way all the way through there as well. Back in the first vertical chamber, go left and use the Save Room again. After that, go down through that vertical room, and enter the next room to the left. There, jump and shoot the cracked blocks to the left, then jump/bomb your way through the passage. Up ahead, use the pulley to get across the acid, shooting through the blocks on the way. At the far end, go into the next room. Jump up the platforms in this next room, and go into the upper-right area. Defeat the first of two giant spider enemies with Missiles quickly, watching out when it jumps around. Go right and up, then roll to the left and defeat the second one below. Then, go into the left room. Bomb/roll into the left passage, and collect a Missile Tank (100). Fall through the floor, and bomb the floor above the acid to drain it out, allowing you to fall some more. At the very bottom, head into the room on the right. Head through the next room, until the room with a red door. Bomb the left area of the floor (you'll notice it looks suspicious anyway), and fall into the room below. Do the same down there and you'll end up in another area below. In here, go left into a Save Room. Then, go all the way right to the far door. Don't go in it though; jump onto the ledge and shoot the right cracked wall above. Crawl through into that room, and collect Unknown Item 2 from the Chozo Statue. Use it to destroy the large block in the room, then in the previous room, go left and shoot the ceiling, then destroy the block up there too. Jump into the passage there and go left, up, and right into the next room. There, simply go all the way right while blasting enemies along the way. In the next room, you can save your game once again. After that, go into the room ahead. You'll spot a cracked section of floor; ignore it for now and continue onward. In the next room, freeze the enemies and bomb/shoot through the ceiling above the ledge. In the room above, shoot a Missile at the blue block above, then roll up/bomb the remaining section before going in and shooting out the rest. Roll through that passage and shoot a Missile up at the lone blue block (you'll see why later). Now, go back down to the room with the cracked floor. There, bomb the floor, and drop into the room below. Go down a bit, then to the right. Go up and left, then destroy the large blocks and jump the gap, then enter the following room. There, go forward and shoot the eye door with some Missiles to clear it. When you're ready, go in and you'll meet up with the green dragon Kraid. Read the Bosses section for help defeating him. Once it's over, Kraid will sink into the ground defeated. You'll also catch a glimpse of that two-headed statue from earlier, with the eye of Kraid glowing now. Anyway, bomb the lower-left area and go into the next room. Break the Chozo Statue's egg and take the Speed Booster upgrade! Recover with the statue, then stand directly under it and start running to the right. Run right through Kraid's room, and through a couple wall barriers, into another chamber. Continue up the hills to the very top, and shoot open the door at the end. Don't stop yet - keep running ahead through one last wall, and you're set. Now, make your way up this room by freezing the enemies and jumping onto them. You can also shoot apart the wall to the right, and climb onto the parts you don't shoot out, so you can keep moving upward. When you make it to the very top of the room, go right into a Save Room. Save here, then return to the vertical room and drop down to the ledges below. Enter the lower left room. Run to the left, and jump across some platforms, then through an acid waterfall (be quick so you don't take much damage). At the end, grab the Missile Tank (105), then leave this room. Go back up and enter the upper left room this time. In here, use the magnet pulley and move all the way to the left. When the flying enemies start giving chase, launch as many Missiles as possible to the right to clear them all. Otherwise, you'll fall into the acid and end up in the room below. When you get to the end, shoot/bomb your way left into the next room. Drop down to the bottom of this area, and go into the left room. Continue left through a couple rooms until you reach the red door; use a Missile on it and enter the Map Room. Load the map of Kraid's Lair to Samus and leave here. Now, head back right a few rooms until you're back in that vertical room. Go up and shoot the blue blocks, then jump/roll into the right passage and head into that room. Call the pulley to the left side, then stand on the left column and bounce upward with a bomb to be pulled across to the right side. Go into the next room, and head through the passage. At the bottom, go left into a long chamber with a pulley on the ceiling. In this room, you'll notice several barriers on the ceiling blocking passage. Go underneath each and bomb the floor, then use the cannon to shoot up, breaking those walls. Do this for all 3 walls, then call the pulley over by shooting the red light on the right side. Below it, bomb the floor and shoot up with the final cannon so you move to the left in ball form. On the way, you'll grab the next Missile Tank (110). Now, go back to the room to the right. Make your way up and into the upper-left room again. Do the same thing you did before, but on the right column instead. When you get to the left side, go into that room once more. Make your way to the top of the room by freezing the enemies and shooting through the ceiling. Go into the first room on the left side. In this tricky room, there is an upgrade for you to get. Go down and defeat the 3 enemies in here, then jump onto the regular platforms (the ones that won't disappear when you step on them). Get onto the platform with the red switch, then roll up above it and constantly use Bombs until the pulley above pulls you to the left. When it passes over the second gap, drop down to get the Missile Tank (115). Then, go back right out of this room. Continue up this vertical chamber, going into the Save Room on the left side. Blast open the other red door remaining on the right side, and go into that room next. There, run all the way right, then when you run out of space to run, jump to the right. With luck, you'll break the special blocks and collect the Energy Tank (4). Use the pulley to get back across, then return back to the Save Room. After you save again, go up to the elevator and ride back to Brinstar. As you go, a scene will ensue showing another ship in outer space somewhere. ======== Brinstar ======== Once you arrive, a wall to the right will crumble away. So, head into that new room and use the Missiles to open the red door. In the next area, roll up and sit on the Chozo Statue's hand to activate it. You'll see that you have to head back to Norfair again, to an unmapped region no less. After you recover all your energy, go back left past the elevator, into the vertical room. Go up the ledges in here, then at the top, head right. Go right a few rooms until you end up at the Save Room, where you can rest/save. Leave the Save Room and start going up a bit in this vertical area. After going up a few platforms, get against the right wall and bomb jump until you make it into a hidden room. There, bomb the floor, then jump up and get the Missile Tank (120). Go back down and roll to the right, then bomb bounce to the right and into another room. Roll through and bomb out, then go into the room to the right. Continue onward until you reach the elevator, then go down into Norfair once again. ======= Norfair ======= Arriving here again, bomb the floor on either side to reach the bottom, then go into the Save Room to the right. Save, then continue onward. In the large room, go up/down ledges while fighting enemies on the way. When you come to the long flat path, run to the right, shooting the door open as you pass. You should gather enough speed for the Speed Booster to kick in, opening a path below for you in the vertical chamber. Go down and enter the room to the left. Shoot open the door behind you, then go as far left as possible before running back to the right. Back in the vertical room, you'll clear the ground allowing you to go deeper. This time, go into the next room on the left. In here, defeat the enemies on the ceiling, and open the far door with a Missile. Shoot the Chozo's egg and collect the Hi-Jump item. This will let you jump higher, as well as the ability to jump in ball form. Recharge yourself here, then head back right until you arrive at the vertical room again. Jump to the upper right ledge, and drop down along the right side to get a Missile Tank (125). Then, continue dropping as far as you can go, and head back up on the left side. Enter the door on the left at the top, and activate the Chozo Statue in there. You'll be led back to Brinstar, so that's where we're heading next. Jump from the statue up to the top ledges, then through the top right door. Go right out here, and drop into a hidden cannon. Use it to blast up through this room. When you can't go further, go down and into the last door on the left. Run to the left, using the Speed Booster to shortcut through the walls in the large room. Save in the next room, then in the next area, freeze the enemies and head up the elevator to Brinstar once more. ======== Brinstar ======== Back here, go all the way left to the vertical room, then make your way to the very top of that room. Enter the last door on the right into that room. In this room, go right and head through the narrow areas with your ball form. Take the topmost pipe to the right, then when you reach the barrier in the way, shoot the cracked block above and roll through that passage. In the next room with the flying enemy, shoot and jump through the ceiling, since you can with your Hi-Jump now. Jump to the left ledge, then shoot through the ceiling and continue into the left room. There, shoot at the barriers, causing the small parasites to destroy them. Bomb the parasites when they're done, then continue onward in ball form. Jump to the left ledge and drop into the small gaps, jumping out before you fall through. At the leftmost part of this ledge, drop onto the ground below. Go left across a couple dissolving platforms, then jump to a high ledge above and roll to the left. Hold Left to make it onto the small ledge in the wall. Head to the left and bomb the wall, then have the parasites destroy the next barrier in your way. At the end, use a Missile and go into the room. Shoot the egg, and get the Varia Suit from the Chozo Statue. Your suit now turns orange as a result, and you can no longer take damage from acid/hot rooms! Anyway, recover via the statue, then go back to the previous room. Here, go right and drop into the acid to test your new armor. Go right and bomb the low section of floor. Then, go down and bomb your way through a left passage. Collect the Energy Tank (5) at the end, then go back out and continue right to the next room. Bomb/drop through to the low area, and head to the Save Room on the right this time. After you save, move on to the next acid-filled room. Go right as far as you can, then shoot through the floor in the acid to open a passage below. However, jump/roll through the right passage for the time being. Shoot the red part of the wall to raise it, then collect the parasites on yourself. Go back left and down into the acid, then have them kill the barrier on the right. After that, roll right into the next room. Jump out of the acid, and activate the Chozo Statue standing there. You will again be directed to Norfair, deep into it this time. Recover with the Chozo, then go right to a vertical chamber. Drop down and enter the second room on the left. From there, go all the way left to the next vertical room, then go down and right to the Norfair elevator. ======= Norfair ======= After arriving here yet again, go down and right to the Save Room nearby. Next, go through the large room ahead to the vertical chamber. Go up and enter the top left door. In this heat room, make your way to the left across the platforms, and you'll find a Missile Tank (130) at the end. Go back to the vertical room, and go back down again. Go back into the last room on the left, run all the way left, the run back right, shooting through the door, so the Speed Booster will clear the ground in the vertical chamber for you. Do the same thing in the next room below. Then, enter the third room on the left side. In this room, head left while defeating the enemies on the ceiling. In the Chozo Statue room ahead, recharge, then roll along the path under the statue to a heated area. Bomb your way through the passage, blasting a hole in the ceiling. Jump to the above ledge and bomb your way left, then continue onward to the next area. Here, go left, shooting down the enemies above, as well as the blocks in your way on the ground (you'll have to bomb a couple). After you clear the long stretch, go back to the entrance and run to the left at full speed. At the end, jump at the wall to break through, then go onward to another room. In there, defeat the giant enemy by blasting it with Missiles. Then, go into the Save Room and save at this point. From here, head into the room to the left. There's nothing to do here right now, so continue onward. In the next large room, make your way to the left by freezing enemies and using them as stepping stones to reach the upper-left ledges. Once you make it through here, drop down in the vertical room up ahead. There are two doors there you can go through; use a Missile on the left door and visit the Map Room there. Get the Norfair data here, then go back out and drop into the disappearing lava below. Shoot your way down to the bottom of this area, then go into the right room. Defeat the various enemies in here, then move on to the following room. In this small room, before going the obvious way, bomb the floor and drop down a bit. Then, enter the heat room on the right side. Go right through here, blasting some more enemies hanging around. After you pass the purple flame enemy on the platform, shoot the right wall and collect a Missile Tank (135). Then, continue to the end of the room to get a second Missile Tank (140). Next, backtrack to the room above, and continue to the right. There, use Missiles to destroy the barriers in the way, as well as the enemies if you wish. Going ahead in the next room, instead of going forward, bomb the floor and the lava will disappear, then continue down and left into that room. Here, bomb the first wall, then use Missiles to waste the giant enemy there. Bomb the second wall when that's done, then use a Missile to enter the next room. Shoot the Chozo Statue's egg and collect the Wave Beam. You can now shoot through solid objects (it also helps in revealing special panels you need a specific item to clear). Now, recharge and backtrack right and up, then go into the Save Room on the right. After you save, go ahead to the heat room ahead. In here, go right and blast the enemies, then run to the right while blasting through the blocks in your way. If you have enough speed, you should make it through the wall at the end. In the next room, you'll find a giant bug blocking the way above. Roll into the passage under it, and shoot it from below to kill. If you go up and to the right, a second bug will block the way, but it'll seem like you can't hit it. The trick is this: go towards it, then when it starts to charge toward you, lay Bombs. That way it'll take damage from below as it passes. If that doesn't kill it, shoot it back to the right with Missiles/regular shots, then repeat. After you kill it, go right and shoot the ceiling until an Energy Tank appears. Shoot a Missile below it, then jump to get the Energy Tank (6). After that, go back left, then run all the way right (shoot the door) into the following area. You're now back in that vertical chamber from earlier. You should've run through here, clearing the ground below so you'll fall. Jump to a ledge on the left and collect a Missile Tank (145) there. Then, go all the way down and enter the bottom door on the left. Save your game in here before continuing, obviously. Blast your way through the next room with your Missiles. In the room at the end, roll/bomb through the passage straight ahead, and you'll meet a boss creature I'll refer to as Giant Slug. View the Bosses section for help defeating it. Following the fight, roll through the passage that the fallen boss opened up, and head into the right room. Go down the elevator to reach Ridley's area. A cutscene will take place in this time, showing a ship landing, and what appears to be Ridley, flying away. ============= Ridley's Lair ============= When the elevator drops you off here, drop to the floor and go into the Save Room on the left. If you go left, you can't progress because of the green door, and if you head right, it's a dead end. So with that, go back to Norfair. ======= Norfair ======= Back here, go into the boss room to the left. The slug's body will be gone now, so drop into a deeper pit and onward into Ridley's Lair via detour. ============= Ridley's Lair ============= Down here a second time, go down and left into a new area. Go up the path, clearing the objects in your way. At the top of the hill, you'll run into the Giant Hornet boss. Visit the Bosses section once more for help killing it. Once you dispatch this creature, collect the Super Missile Tank (2) to the left. You can now open those green doors with them. So, go right and into the room there. There, defeat the enemies above, then shoot a Missile through the floor and drop to the area below. Use a Super Missile on the left door, and continue to the new area (be sure to save in the right room first). In this room, go all the way left, defeating the new sorts of enemies on the way. At the end, use a Missile and go into that room. There is an Energy Tank ahead, but there is a trap in the way. Count 4 tiles from where you enter, then jump over the middle 4 tiles. You should make it across, collecting your Energy Tank (7). Then, go into the next room. Defeat the eagle enemy, then bomb the wall to the left. Be careful though, since there are lots of small enemies inside there. Wait until they all crawl out, blasting them that way, instead of rushing in. After you clear them, bomb through to the other side, and go into the following room. Drop down through here until you find a couple of doorways; go into the left room and save your game there. Back in the vertical room, go down and around to collect a Missile Tank (150). From there, continue dropping to the bottom of this chamber, then go into the right room. Here in the Map Room, download the data for this region, then move onward. In the next room, shoot open the door behind you, then go right and shoot the wall above. Run along the upper path, then run back to the left until you have the Speed Booster kicking in; press Down to hold the charge (shine-sparking). Quickly shoot out of here, go down and left, and stand at the low point of the ramp, then press A while facing Left to launch that way. Run to the left, shooting through the Map Room, then in the vertical room, you'll cut through the floor. Go down and shoot the door, then run left into that room too. In this hidden (optional) area, run all the way left, then at the end, press Down, then go Up with the booster. Go right in ball form and hold Right as you fall to get onto the ledge. Drop to the right onto a delayed crumbling block, then quickly jump to the right ledge and roll on it. When you fall down the right side, QUICKLY unroll and grab onto the left ledge. Shoot a Missile to the right, then jump/roll through there. Roll along the bottom path toward the other side, but not quite. Now here's the tricky part (you only need to do this if you want these tanks). As soon as you roll onto the disappearing blocks, quickly unroll and shoot Missiles to the left, then even more quickly grab/climb onto the left ledge before you fall below. If you screw it up, you have to do everything all over again, so beware. After you do this, roll to the left for the first of two Missile Tanks (155). In the middle area here, there is a delayed crumbler you can stand on for a moment before it disappears. The trick here is to roll onto it, then quickly unroll and shoot Missiles upward (if you start to fall, grab onto one of the sides and repeat). When you clear the Missile block above, shoot normally to clear the reformed blocks, and climb onto the upper ledge there. Shoot upward with more Missiles, then jump to get the other Missile Tank (160). Now you can leave this room (run from the left side to the right, shooting through the door). Press Down at the wall, then boost upward to get out of this passage, and then go right into the Map Room. Back in the long chamber ahead, go all the way right, blasting the enemies as they come up to recover your Missile supply (you probably need it from that hornet battle), then grab yet another Missile Tank (165) on the ledge ahead. At the end, go into the Save Room and save at this point. In the vertical room ahead, jump all the way to the top area, then go into the left room. Here, go left through the room until you reach the second set of pipes in the ground (the ones where the enemies come out). Drop into the middle one of the second set, and bomb downward. Go left and bomb the floor above the lava, then drop into it; it'll disappear. Bomb the right corner and grab the Missile Tank (170) you find there. After that, shoot your way back up, then go left into the next room. In here, go left and bomb the area above the low passage to clear the way. Defeat the flying enemies moving around here, then jump to take a Missile Tank (175). Jump to the upper-left ledge and bomb the way upward. Use a Super Missile on the block to the right when you're in the top area. Then, lay a bomb, and bomb the remaining block to get another Super Missile Tank (4). Go back down and head left to the next room. In the room ahead, defeat the 2 enemies crawling on the middle column, then drop and grab onto the ledge you were on. From there, jump to grab the Missile Tank (180) atop the column. Go into the left room, and defeat some more enemies in there. Head into the room at the far end, and collect a Super Missile Tank (6), but before you leave, there's something more you can do. Roll up into ball form and jump into a hidden passage in the right wall. Go up and break the lone block to reveal a Missile Tank (185). Then, go into the left room. In this hidden room, roll to the left and into the narrow gap. Uncurl and hang from the left ledge, and shoot down/right at the block in the way of the tank. Then, drop down and quickly grab onto and climb on that ledge, and claim the Missile Tank (190). At the bottom, use the cannon to launch back to the start. For the second item in here, stand facing the left side and shoot that way, clearing 4 blocks along that side. Then, roll down to the left ledge, and to the end. As soon as you get onto the delayed crumbling block, stand up and clear the blocks above, then jump to the ledge and roll over to get the other Missile Tank (195). Now, roll right to get out of here, and make your way back a few rooms to the vertical chamber. This time, drop through the floor to the area below. Before going left (where you're supposed to go), head right. Go right through this room until you can't go further, then shoot at the high wall to clear it. Jump up there and continue through the door to another hidden area. Go right and bomb the corner to reveal a secret passageway below. Go right through it and collect an Energy Tank (8). Now, go back a couple rooms, and continue to the Save Room this time. Save, then go to the following room. Drop through the crumbling ledge and continue left. When you go to the eye door, it'll open but shoots a wave at you (turn into a ball to avoid). Then, jump up and shoot it with a Missile. Do it 3 times to open the door, then go on and get ready for a battle ahead. Apparently there's no boss here yet, so you might as well continue to the next area. Shoot the Chozo Statue egg in here, and collect the Unknown Item 3. Use it to destroy the block behind the statue, then recharge and head into a hidden passage to get another Energy Tank (9). Now go back to the boss room, and head toward the right door. A scene will show Ridley swooping in, thus battle will begin. Check out the Bosses section for help defeating this guy. Following this fight, collect the power-ups, then exit to the right. Freeze the enemy that comes out of the pipe, and use it to reach an upper ledge. Go right through a passage, dropping you by the door. Save in the next room, then run through the following room, speeding through the enemies for a quick way ahead. In the next room, simply go all the way right until you get to the room after it. In that vertical area, go down and left to the Save Room and save now. This next part is optional, yet tough, but if you want the tanks I'll lead you to, read on. Go into the room to the left, shooting the door so it stays open behind you. Shoot open the ceiling and run along the path up there to the far left, then run back right. When you start to charge, shoot through the blocks at the end, then press Down to hold a charge. Then, quickly run/jump into the Save Room, shoot the opposite door, get to the low part of the room, and press A/Right to continue dashing. In the next room, quickly press Down to hold the charge again. At this point, jump up a couple ledges quickly, then dash to the right, going through the wall into a hidden room. Shoot open the door and head into the next room. Go all the way right, then come back left running, opening the door on the way. The reason for this is that the tank here is TOO hard to get right now, so we'll wait until later to return. Anyway, run back to the previous room, then press Down and hold charge. Shoot straight up into the alcove in the ceiling, and you'll end up in a new area above. Open the door and run into the room to the right, shooting the blocks in the way (be careful, one in the second set needs to be hit with a Missile, so be ready). When you start hitting the booster blocks, jump so you hit them all, reaching the Missile Tank (200) at the end. It'll take some good timing/practice, but this is the only way to get it. Afterward, speed boost back left to the previous room and run through the wall to return to the vertical segment. Back in this area, go up and shoot the glowing block to open up the rest of the path. Go through a hidden passage in the wall, and you'll get to the very top. Head into the room on the left there. In here, go left and pass the pipe the flying enemy comes out of. On the left side of it, get close enough to trigger the enemy to come out, then jump so it rises a bit. Then, let it fly a little to the left, and then freeze it. Jump onto it, and wall jump from the upper left wall to the right ledge, and continue over to a Missile Tank (205). After that, continue through until you reach an apparent dead end. At that point, shoot a Missile at the floor, then bomb your way to the room below. From there, go into the next room, where you can take the elevator out of here. ======= Norfair ======= Needless to say, when you arrive here, a wall to the right will crumble in front of you. Go into that new area, and use a Missile to enter the next room. You will spot a broken Chozo Statue here; pass it and bomb your way to the lower area. From there, go left into another room. Go through the next couple rooms via a tube that passes you behind the elevator, too. In the room it leaves you off in, run to the left, blasting through the regular blocks, so you can speed boost through the last set of them. At the end, your boost will uncover a cannon; use it to shoot up a few rooms. In the new room you end up in, simply go left. In the new room, get past all the flying enemies by freezing them. Then, use a Missile and head into the last room. Shoot the Chozo's egg and collect the ever-useful Screw Attack! Now, go back to the previous room and use your new ability to kill all those enemies. You can also use it to get the Missile Tank (210) in here, too. Continue right to the next room, then somersault with the Screw Attack to fall through the floor. Enter the first room on the right and save your game there. Go back to the room you were in, and go down further, then use a Super Missile on the green door. Head right through this large room, by jumping from ledge to ledge and fighting the enemies on them. When you make it to the following room, bomb the left area of floor and fall into the lava that disappears. At the bottom, go left into that room. Here, go left and defeat some enemies, then trigger an enemy to come out and fly to the left. When you do that, stand on the lone block in the lava and when the enemy flies past overhead, freeze it. Then, jump normally (do NOT somersault) and use it to jump to the Super Missile Tank (8). Following this, repeat the same process so you end up on that ledge again. But this time, when the enemy rethaws and flies to the left side, shoot diagonally down and left to freeze it again. Then, shoot the left wall, and use the enemy to jump to that opening. From there, run all the way left to the Missile Tank (215). Next, go back a bit to the Save Room once again. From there, continue right through several rooms, recharging at the Chozo Statue, until you end up at the vertical chamber at the end. Jump up a couple ledges, then use the Screw Attack to cut through the right wall, so you can reach the top. Go into the door on the left there. Head all the way left to the end, then blow open the door with a Super Missile. In that room, go left through here, killing the enemies and shooting through the walls on the way. At the very last wall, shoot off the top block and take the Missile Tank (220) there. Then, go on to the following room. In the next room, jump onto the upper ledge and drop a bomb, then quickly move to the left side. When the line of bomb blocks makes it to the left side and starts going down, jump over it and collect the Super Missile Tank (10) on the ledge. Then, drop to the lower area, go right and shoot your way up, and leave this room. When you make it to the vertical room again, use the Screw Attack in the left wall, and enter the next room on the left side. Dash through this room to the end, then save your game in the room ahead. Then, go to the next room and ride the elevator back to Brinstar. ======== Brinstar ======== Back up here after some time, go into the left room. Head all the way left to the door; shoot it open, but don't go through (we're going for another tank, if you want it, read on). Instead, run back to the right as far as possible, then run back to the left to the next room. As soon as you turn red, press Down to hold the charge. Now, quickly go back to the room you just came from. There, open the door behind you, go down the small ramp in ball form, then press A and hold Left to rocket that way in ball form. As you shoot through, hold Up/Left to make it up the hill in the middle hidden chamber. After you get through the 2 blocks in there, press Down to hold the charge once more. In the next vertical room to the left, jump onto the lower platform (still in ball form). Then, press A and Left to shoot through the last wall, where you can claim the Super Missile Tank (12). Now, you should have collected everything there is to have in Brinstar (assuming you've followed this walkthrough from the start)! Go back right into the vertical room, then go all the way to the top area. Once there, head left into that room. Recharge with the Chozo Statue, then continue left until you reach that two-headed statue from earlier. Touch it and it'll open up, allowing your passage. So, head through the far door and down the elevator to the supposed final region, Tourian. On the way down, you'll witness a scene showing the Metroids below attacking the life in there. ======= Tourian ======= As soon as you arrive, go down and enter the first room on the right. This is the Save Room; save here before you go any further. After you do that, go into the right room. There, you'll see the creature the Metroids just killed earlier. In the next room, drop down and into the lower left room. There, you'll have to fight the first of several Metroids. Defeat it by freezing it, then using Missiles to cause damage. 5 Missiles will do the trick. When it's gone, head on into the next area. In this vertical area, you'll have to deal with 2 Metroids. To alleviate this stress, stay in the upper area and kill the first one, then go down for the other. When you clear both Metroids, go ahead to the next area. Go right through here, fighting several more Metroids as you pass through. In the following larger room, make your way through here while dealing with another barrage of Metroid fun. After you get through there, simply continue right to a Save Room. Then, go back to the previous room and bomb the floor, and head into the lower-right room. Go down through this vertical room, doing more of the same. In the room after this, don't be fooled by its simplicity. Bomb the 2 floor levels to reveal a whole slew of Metroids, be careful! When you kill them all off, head into the upper-left room and save your game once more. In the next room, it's a Metroid-free one, finally. Use this time to regain your energy/Missile supply from the rings that constantly come from the walls. When you're filled up, open the red door and go to the next area. In this final area, make your way to the left, shooting the glass barriers with Missiles quickly. Be quick, or they'll regenerate, so try and kill the barriers fast. Don't worry so much about the turret fire, since it gives off minimal damage; just work on your targets as you cross the room. When you make it to the end, you're against a boss, so check the Bosses section yet again. After you defeat Mother Brain, you'll then have 3 minutes to evacuate the planet before its destruction. Since you obviously can't go the way you came, exit to the left. In this long vertical corridor, simply jump up the ledges before they crumble, as you make your way to the top. When you get there, take the elevator out to Crateria. ======== Crateria ======== Out here, go right to the next long vertical area. Jump up several more ledges, then head to the right a bit. In the last area, run to the right, speed boosting through the wall, and you'll reach the ship. Simply get in, and off you go. However, things don't go as planned, and Samus is shot down once again, ending you up in a new region. ======== Chozodia ======== You'll be out here, all alone, with no power suit this time around. One thing you do have though, is a pistol, which'll get you by for now. You have to reach the Space Pirate Mother Ship for now, so head left to the next area. Continue to the left, crawling under part of the ship to continue on. In this area, you'll find the entrance to the ship. The door isn't something you can open right now, so we'll use an alternate way in. Go down and to the left, and shoot the lower corner of the wall, then crawl in. Inside the ship, jump up and crawl to the left into another room. You'll find the Map Room, so shoot out the ceiling and download the data into Samus' pistol. Then, enter the left Save Room, and save there. It'll also recharge you, too (wonder why it didn't do that earlier...). There is a red door blocking progress, so to get around it, jump onto a high ledge and crawl past. In this next room, you'll be forced into a confrontation with a couple tough enemies. Drop down and stun the first one with your gun, then climb up to the left and make your way up, and to the right. Get past the second enemy with another stun shot, then enter the room at the end. The enemies will follow you in, so be quick to crawl through the passage and jump into a hidden alcove to avoid them. After they run off, the gate ahead will open, so go through to another chamber. In this next room, don't be so hasty to move, since there are security traps. There are green vertical lines; do NOT cross them or those creatures will come out and attack again. Get past the first set and crawl through a passage to the right to the end. You'll have no choice at this point, so shoot the wall to destroy the passage, dropping you onto a trap. Quickly jump up to the right and go through the blue door. Make your way through the next few rooms, evading the enemies, stunning them when possible. You'll eventually make it to a room where you can climb up a wall and stand on the left side of it, where you won't be seen. Stay there and the enemy will leave, causing the gate ahead to open. So, continue left and up to another area. Crawl to the left into a new room ahead, where you can fall through the floor. From there, go right into a Save Room; it's highly advised you save at this point, just in case you mess up, so you don't have to repeat all this again. From the Save Room, go left and jump up the ledges to the top. Head left and down the other side, then into the left room. In there, you'll have to shoot through the floor, but when you do so, be prepared for another chase scene. Crawl out through the right hole, then shoot your way down through the walls of the next large room. At the bottom, crawl through the passage and head through the blue door. Then, drop through the crumbling floor and stay where you are until the gate opens. You'll be left alone again, which is good. As for now, go left into the next room. Make your way up through here, being careful not to be seen by the yellow security lights (you know why). At the top, go into the right room. Continue upward, shooting the cracked ceilings on the way. In the following room, shoot a couple more walls and head into the Save Room ahead. Save/reenergize, then move on to the left room. This next room is a REALLY annoying trap-filled one, as you see. Start by dropping to the very bottom, then jumping onto the left ledge. Jump over the first 2 lines below, then to an upper ledge. Quickly jump to the right ledge before the ledge you're on crumbles. Drop to the next platform and run to the right, grabbing onto the next one. Quickly crawl across it, then jump to the upper platform and make your way left. After a couple more tricky jumps, you'll be by the door; head through it. Continue up the ledge and into the following room. It will get tricky again after this; when you fall down, a guard will give chase again (I haven't found a way to avoid this, but if anyone can, it'd be appreciated). Crawl through the bottom right passage, then drop through a couple of rooms, shooting your way down the second one. At the very bottom, head left through a couple rooms into the ruins. There, drop all the way down to the ground, then continue to the left for some rooms. Shoot through the blocks in this next room, then run to the next room. In there, jump on the ledge and stay in the dark corner, and the enemy will run past, allowing you to explore freely again. At this point, go left into the Save Room. Recharge/save (you'll need it), then go ahead to the following room. Run straight through this empty chamber into another, much larger one. Make your way left, up, and right through this room, being very careful to avoid the yellow lights. When you get to the next empty room, drop down and continue right. Run through this room, shooting the blocks in your way. At the end, jump up some ledges and head right. In the empty room, simply jump to the upper ledge and return to the left room. Go up again and into the upper-right room, where you'll find another trap waiting. In here, there are yellow beams moving up and down through this room. Trip one, and the enemies come out yet again. However, the beams pass behind certain ledges, so if you can hang at those spots, you can pass the beams untouched. When you make it to the top, enter the left room. Here, go left and crawl your way along the crumbling path, above the enemies no less. Shoot the blocks in the way, then at the end, drop down and enter the left room. If you end up getting spotted, make your way left through a couple rooms, then shoot the left wall and duck in the lower-left corner to escape. After that, make your way through the next several rooms, and you'll come to a spot where you'll see a Power Bomb container above. You can't get it yet, so head left and down through the next room. Crawl through the passage and jump up some ledges, then go right into that room. The bomb is gone, which means one of those pirates took it! Anyhow, go back left a couple rooms to find a hidden Save Room. After that, go back right as far as you can, then go up and left. Above, you'll see a pirate taking away that upgrade, as you may have guessed. Follow it into the next room, where you'll find more yellow bars moving along. When the first yellow bar goes down, drop down and stand on the ledge protected from it. Do the same thing for the second one, then crawl into the right side and go back up. In the next room, go right and you'll be spotted by some more guards. Run all the way right, being careful not to take much damage. Jump up some ledges in the next room, then make your way to the left through several more rooms. In the large chamber, run all the way left, then jump up small ledges on your way upward. At the top, go right, blasting through blocks until you reach the gate. Stand on the ledge there, then shoot the bridge to clear it, sending away all those enemies. The gate will then open, so go ahead to a Save Room. Recharge, then in the next room, go right and up, then left. Upon entering this area, a cutscene will show a wall painting with 5 orbs on it. There will be a young version of Samus in this scene, too. Afterward, the orbs will power up and a clone of Samus will appear in the middle one. You'll then have to do battle; visit the Bosses section below. After you get through this, Samus will regain her suit. Also, the 3 Unknown Items from earlier will become the Plasma Beam, Gravity Suit, and Space Jump. Now you're set for really completing this game! Use your Space Jump to reach the upper-right ledge, then fall through the floor into the previous room. Go down and kill the guards (you can do it easily now, great). Continue right and down, then left into a Save Room. After you power up and save here, head back right. Shoot a Missile into the ground and drop into the watery area, then run all the way from the left to the right. With enough speed, break through the far wall and get the Super Missile Tank (14). Before you leave, go all the way left, and run right to build a charge. When you get it, press Down, then jump to the platform above, and dash to the left. As soon as you go up the ramp, press Down to hold the charge again. Jump up to a smaller ledge and repeat this. Do this a couple more times, then you'll be on your way to the vertical room again. As soon as you enter that room after recharging, press Down, then Screw Attack through the wall and drop to the ledge on the left. Dash to the left up the ramp, then QUICKLY press Down to hold the charge. Finally, drop to the right ledge and dash to the right. You'll fly through a few areas, ending up with an Energy Tank (10) at the end. Go back left, then run to the right to get a charge. Then, dash back left to the vertical room. Back here, jump to the ledge to the upper-left, then shoot Missiles at it. Roll into that passage and collect the Missile Tank (225). Back in the long room, drop to the bottom and kill the enemies, then go through the wall into the left room. Screw Attack through the floor and drop into the acid below. Fall to the bottom, then roll to the right and follow the path to a Super Missile Tank (16). Then, make your way all the way left and roll into the next room. Drop through this room, killing some more of the enemies, then into the room at the bottom. Head left and drop through the floor, then enter the next room on the right side. Bomb the floor and defeat the enemies, then shoot at the left wall to reveal a tank. Shoot a Missile to open the wall, and collect the Super Missile Tank (18). Drop down and go left, then bomb through the passage. Continue onward until you reach the large room again. When you get there, drop to the bottom and go right until you reach a Save Room. Continue to the right after you save, defeating more of the enemies you encounter, as you backtrack the path you came from earlier. At the large room in the end, Space Jump to the top and go through the blue door there. From this point, continue following the path back into the Mother Ship, blasting the enemies as you reach them. When you reach another Save Room, be sure to stop and rest there, though. A couple rooms ahead, use the Screw Attack to jump through the ceiling, then bomb it, reaching a red door from earlier. Before going into it, shoot at the ceiling to reveal the marking, then shoot a Missile at it. Jump through the opening and bomb the container in your way, then go up and collect the Super Missile Tank (20). Now, go into the room on the left. Jump up a couple ledges, then use a Super Missile on the door there. Moving along, bomb the wall and slip through for yet another Super Missile Tank (22). It's a trap, and you'll fall though; simply defeat the enemies and jump back up for your prize. There is a yellow door ahead; you can't go in yet, so head back right a couple rooms. In that room where you went up a secret passage, continue right into the next couple rooms. Get through the large room, and use the Save Room in the lower-right section. Then, go back out and open the red door above. Out here, jump up to the high area, then roll through a passage to a left room. Go left past the black enemies, then shoot through the door and enter that room next. Make your way through the next couple rooms, and you'll eventually pass a yellow door again. From that spot, go left and roll through the passages, bombing the entire way through. Keep moving through the next several rooms, until you end up in an area that appears to be the front of the ship. There, go to the bottom-left area and drop into a hidden room. Go down and you'll find the pirate carrying the upgrade away into one last room. Bomb down there and enter that room. In there, trip the wire and collect the Power Bombs (2). After you get the new item, defeat the enemies that come in, then use a Power Bomb to clear the yellow door. In the empty room ahead, use the other Power Bomb to reveal an opening above. Jump up to get the Power Bomb Tank (4). Now, go back out of the passages you came through. When you're up at the ship front again, go up and right until you reach a Save Room. Save and rest in there, then before we continue, there are a few more things you can do with the Power Bombs. Since the final boss is ahead, this is probably the best time to go backtracking. The next couple sections will be for optional things to get so you have 100% items, assuming you've followed my walkthrough from start to now. So if you want everything, read on, otherwise skip to the section where I pick up. ======== Chozodia ======== Start by making your way to the lower-right area of the map, in the Map Room. From that point, go right into that room. Shoot at the ceiling to reveal a tank; use a Missile to open the ceiling, then jump to get a Super Missile Tank (24). Continue out to the back area outside the ship. Out there, go right and jump up to a ledge behind the ship. Use a Power Bomb to open a hidden compartment; roll into it to get a Power Bomb Tank (6). Next up, get toward the lower-middle area, where you pass through that clear glass tube. In there, use a Power Bomb to shatter it (seems familiar). Drop down and go right, Power Bombing into the next room. Space Jump to the top of the room, defeating the enemies on the way. At the top, collect the Power Bomb Tank (8). Now, go back out and Power Bomb the lower-left area from the tube. Go left and all the way down the ledge-filled corridor. At the bottom, there's a Save Room to the right. In the room to the left, open the bottom door. Then, clear all the enemies out, and run down the hill from the top. In the room you just came from, press Down when charged, then shoot up the middle area. You'll rise all the way up, collecting an Energy Tank (11) on the way. Continue down and left through the area below/left of the shattered tube. When you come to a room with a simple path, shoot at the ceiling and jump up into a secret passage. Go through it, fighting enemies on the way, to get a Super Missile Tank (26) at the top. In the room to the left of this, drop a Power Bomb to clear the maze above, then go up through it, staying towards the right side. At the top, you'll find another Super Missile Tank (28). Remember this location, then make your way toward the long vertical room toward the top of the green map segment. Use a Power Bomb there to open the way to a room on the left side. In there, you'll roll through a narrow passage, with a few more narrow passages above. Get to the top passage, roll all the way right, then shoot the ceiling with a Missile. Jump up into the hidden room (it's below the other upgrade location on your map there) to get a Power Bomb Tank (10). Now, return to the bottom-left area of the map (where you found that Super Missile tank). Once there, continue up and left to reach Crateria. ======== Crateria ======== Head left, using a Power Bomb on the door. In the large room, Space Jump to a new room high above. Screw Attack through the right wall to get into the open air area. Jump to the high ledge above and Power Bomb through the door, then run all the way right into Chozodia. ======== Chozodia ======== Back in here, go right and drop down into an empty room. If you want a shortcut, shoot a Missile at the bottom-right section of floor. Otherwise, shoot Missiles at the left wall to open a hidden alcove. Roll in and bomb it to reveal a Power Bomb Tank (12). Head up and run to the left, shooting through the door at the end, back to Crateria (we'll be running back and forth on this path for the next couple upgrades, so remember this). ======== Crateria ======== As soon as you enter here with your charged boost, press Down to hold it. Drop down to the first ledge on the right side, then roll into a ball and press A/Left. You'll shoot through the left wall and drop to a Missile Tank (230). Go back up to that Chozodia tunnel, and get another boosted run. As soon as you arrive in the large room, press Down to hold the charge, then QUICKLY Space Jump left and up to the upper ledge, then quickly land and charge to the right. You should make it through the wall, nabbing the Super Missile Tank (30) in there. Continue left a few rooms until you're in the large blue section of the map (where your ship used to be). Drop down and enter the rooms on the lower- right side. In the room ahead with the elevator, shoot the left door open, then Power Bomb the blocks in the way to make it smooth. Then, run from the right side all the way left to the next room. Your boost will cut through those walls, but shoot ahead to open the door and continue on. In the large area, press Down, then jump to the upper ledge to the left. Quickly roll up and dash up/left at that point; you should make it through some booster blocks in the upper cliff. From that point, use a Power Bomb to clear the last block, then roll up to get the Power Bomb Tank (14). Now, go back to that elevator room and head to Norfair. ======= Norfair ======= In this area, make your way to the lower-left most corner of the map (the vertical chamber connected to the Map Room). At the bottom of it, drop through the liquid and blast through the floor with Missiles, then the wall with regular blasts. In the hidden room to the left, go up and right to find a tank in the wall. Shoot the floor, then as you fall through the crumbling blocks, shoot a Missile upward. Go back around and collect the Missile Tank (235). Drop to the bottom of this room and shoot Missiles through the left wall, then Space Jump to the top of that second room to find a Power Bomb Tank (16). From where you are now, consult the map and get down to Ridley's area. ============= Ridley's Lair ============= Down here, make your way to the lower-right segment of the map. It's the area I told you earlier we'll return to, because of a hard-to-reach tank. When you get to that room, charge to the right, then when you get a charge, press Down and roll under the low wall. Then, shoot up the narrow passage to the top- right corner. Now, bomb the area to start a domino effect. We could've done this the HARD way earlier, but this time, simply Space Jump your way to the Missile Tank (240) in there. After that, make your way all the way back to Brinstar. When you make it there, head to the west area and down the elevator to Kraid's area. ============ Kraid's Lair ============ From the elevator, go down the main corridor and into the second room on the left side. In that room, go left and drop into the acid pits until you come to one where you can Screw Attack through a series of blocks. Go all the way right, shooting the blocks in the way, then go back left and start dashing to the right. As soon as a charge begins, press Down, then go back left to the section before the hill. Then, roll up and press A/Right. You'll follow the path down to the Missile Tank (245) at the end. Now, go back to Brinstar, and head up to Tourian. ======= Tourian ======= In this area, make your way to the hall just after the final Save Room. Run to the left, charging up on the way. At the end of the path, press Down and quickly go to the next room. There, somersault jump high, then quickly press Up to unravel, then press A/Left to rocket to the left. If done right, you'll fly through all the breakable blocks into another room at the end. At that point, shoot the floor to get a Missile Tank (250). Now, go back to the large acid room you were in. Atop the broken platform, shoot a Super Missile down, then roll into a hidden room and collect the Power Bomb Tank (18). After this, you should have every item available in this game, sans 1 final Energy Tank. So, let's return to Chozodia, to the topmost Save Room (the one I left you off at before going off into optional segments). ======== Chozodia ======== From the Save Room, go left a couple areas to the large room. Jump to the ledge above, and bomb the ceiling to open it up. Defeat a couple enemies, then go into the right room. Power Bomb your way through here, then use regular bombs at the other end of the passage. Then, continue onward. Run to the far end of this stretch, then start running back to the left. As soon as you get the boost, do a quick hop and you'll drop through the special blocks in the floor. Now, enter perhaps the greatest challenge for an upgrade in the entire game. You need to go back up and make a charging run again, pressing Down to hold the charge. Then, quickly jump down the gap you just made and jump into the pit to the right. When you get just low enough, press Up then A to launch to the right. If you can successfully pull this off, you can get the final Energy Tank (12) at the end. Be prepared, it may take some tries to get it done! When/if you get it, or if you give up, continue to the next room above. Keep going into the final room, where you'll meet the final boss, known as Meta- Ridley. View the Bosses section one last time for help fighting this beast. After the battle, a self-destruct mechanism will trigger, and you'll have 5 minutes to escape Chozodia. Check your map; your destination is that yellow ship with the long tunnel to the right of it. So, follow the path through all the rooms you can go through, fighting the enemies on the way. When you get stuck behind the tin creature, bomb it to get it moving, then slowly travel behind it to the end. Past that, continue to the ship. Once you make it to the ship's gate, there will be 2 pirates waiting. Have a gunfight with them (only your regular blaster will hurt them, sorry! and after you beat them, go get the ship. Jump in and you'll be on your way to a great escape as the region is ruined. Congratulations on completing Zero Mission! ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 7. Bosses -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Acid Worm Found: Kraid's Lair Strategy: This creature will primarily sit under the acid, then it will shake before coming out in your direction to attack. If you don't get hit by that impact, it'll spit out some objects you can destroy for supplies. The trick is to wait under the magnet pulley until you see the worm shaking below. Then, quickly jump to move across the pit, and drop down and shoot Missiles at the red bump on the worm's back. That's how you cause damage to it. Do this a couple times, then the acid level in the room will rise and fall, then the battle will continue. Repeat the same method of attacking until you win at this point. Kraid Found: Kraid's Lair Strategy: Starting off in this battle, Kraid will simply stand there, spitting debris at you, which you can destroy for more Missiles/health. Jump and shoot a Missile at his face to open his mouth, then shoot Missiles into his mouth to cause damage. After a while of this, he'll knock apart the right side of the platform you're on. Below, there will be claws stuck to the wall, which are shot out of Kraid's body. On the remaining half of the platform, jump/shoot Missiles again, being careful not to get hit by Kraid's arm. When the platform is fully removed, you'll only have those claws to stand on. Be careful though, they disappear after a few moments, then are shot out again. Jump to the top one and use the Missiles again; a couple more shots at this point will do the now-red Kraid in. Giant Slug Found: Norfair Strategy: Albeit tedious, this creature is a rather simple one to beat. It hangs from the ceiling, sending out small objects you can shoot at to get more Missiles. A flying creature flies in a figure-8 pattern around, too. Freeze that creature, then jump on it, and jump/shoot Missiles at the purple threads holding the bug on the ceiling. Be careful though, since the flying enemy thaws out fairly quickly. After all the purple threads are destroyed, the bug will fall, ending the battle. Giant Hornet Found: Ridley's Lair Strategy: This giant bug will fly quickly across the room, then rise up at the far end. When you approach, it'll dive down to attack you, then proceeds back up the hill. The key is to not end up in front of it, since its stinger will shoot projectiles at you to cause damage. Curl into ball form when it comes down, then run after it, blasting Missiles at its stinger. Do this enough times and the stinger will fall apart, causing the hornet to crash and burn shortly thereafter. Ridley Found: Ridley's Lair Strategy: This flying dragon from the past games is just the same as he was then, and that is annoying. Starting off, he'll spew lots of fireballs, which you can clear quickly with your Wave Beam equipped. After that, he'll fly in the air, so get under him and start the barrage of Missiles into his face. Be careful of Ridley's tail, which will swing around to hit you when he moves forward, or stabs downward at you as he moves backward. Try to keep your distance to be safe, since Ridley can grab you and fly to the top of the room, causing you lots of damage. However, that gives you an excellent opportunity to blast him with Missiles for a while. As he weakens, Ridley will start to turn red. So, just keep it up with the Missiles and you should be able to outlive this boss. Mother Brain Found: Tourian Strategy: Fighting the Mother Brain wouldn't be so hard, if there weren't so many added things making life difficult. The turrets, the energy rings, and the lava below, not to mention the 2 small platforms you have to jump between. Anyway, the battle starts with the boss encased in glass; shoot 5 or so Super Missiles at it to expose the brain. This is where the battle changes a bit. When you stand on either ledge, Mother Brain will glow blue, then send out an energy ball straight ahead. It'll then open an eye for a moment before repeating. A trick to winning here is to wait for the brain to turn blue, then just before the shot, somersault to the adjacent ledge (the Screw Attack will kill off the projectiles in the air, making it somewhat easier for you). When you land, crouch down and launch a Super Missile into the eye. The eye will close and the cycle will repeat. Do this several times, using the Super Missiles. If you run out, you can still attack; you'll just need to use several regular Missiles in one stretch. It should take about 5 Super Missile hits to end this battle. Clone Orb Found: Chozodia Strategy: This boss is rather interesting, since it's just a hologram containing a clone of Samus in its orb. If you shoot the orb when Samus is shown in it, you take damage, so be careful. Just move around, jumping to avoid lightning, then when a symbol shows on the orb, shoot it. You'll have to do this 4 times; once you do that, stand in the center area and look up to finish the match. Meta-Ridley Found: Chozodia Strategy: The surprise final boss is actually a very easy boss once you get into battle. The red spot on its chest is its weak point, so hop up and shoot a Super Missile at it. After you do that, it'll block access to its chest with its arm. As for its attacks, it'll either raise up its arm and then swipe at you (jump to avoid), spit fireballs up and down (jump to avoid those too), or shoot lasers. The lasers are shot in random directions, so be ready to jump/not jump to avoid them. Also, homing missiles are sent out to get you; a simple Screw Attack will clear them. As you attack with each Super Missile whenever you get a chance, the boss will change colors. After several hits, the battle will suddenly end, and that's it. ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 8. Items -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Bombs: Use to break blocks and such in places you couldn't reach otherwise. To drop one, roll up into a ball (requires Morph Ball) and press B. You can drop up to 4 at a time, and you have infinite amounts of them. Charge Beam: Allows you to charge your regular blaster before shooting. Hold B to charge. Gravity Suit: Also known as Unknown Item 2 from earlier. Allows you to move in all environments (i.e. water) without being slowed down. Hi-Jump: Doubles the height of your regular jumps. This also enables "Jumpball", which allows you to jump while in ball form. Ice Beam: Freezes most enemies upon impact, so you can jump on them as if they are regular platforms. Long Beam: Lengthens your shot, making it so you can shoot a further distance to attack. Missiles: Your secondary/more powerful projectiles. To shoot, hold R and attack with B. These can also be used to blast open cracks in walls and blocks that a regular bomb/blaster shot can't handle. Morph Ball: Allows you to roll up in a ball form. This is extremely useful for fitting through tunnels and other tight passages. Plasma Beam: Also known as Unknown Item 1 from earlier. Allows your blaster to pierce through enemies upon impact. It's a little stronger than previous beams, but instead of dissipating upon impact, it goes right through the enemy, only stopping when hitting a wall. Power Bombs: The super-powerful version of bombs. When dropped, they destroy all types of blocks and destroyable walls in a room, as well as most enemies. To use, roll up into a ball form, hold R, and press B to drop. They take slightly longer than regular bombs to detonate, not that it'll matter though. Power Grip: Grab onto the edges of platforms you can't quite reach, then pull yourself up with this. Screw Attack: The final ability you will receive, this allows you to cause damage to enemies when somersaulting in the air. It also allows you to break through really powerful walls that you couldn't get through until you have this item. Space Jump: Also known as Unknown Item 3 from earlier. When you jump, you can jump again and again while in mid-air. To do so, hold Left or Right and press A in mid-air to jump again. Speed Booster: When you run a long enough distance, you'll start flashing and moving super-fast. This can help you break through special types of walls or floors. If you're charged while running and want to hold the charge, press Down to hold the charge in for several moments. To use the charge, press A, then hold the Control Pad in the direction you want to charge. Super Missiles: An upgraded version of your regular Missiles. They're strong, and can take out enemies quicker with a more powerful punch. Unknown Item: Lets you destroy the large blocks in some areas of Crateria. Unknown Item 2: Lets you destroy the large blocks in some areas of Kraid. Unknown Item 3: Lets you destroy the large blocks in some areas of Ridley. Varia Suit: Allows you to handle hot and cold environments without taking damage. Wave Beam: The last beam you will receive. It allows you to shoot through walls with your regular cannon. This is useful for hitting enemies or switches that are just out of normal reach. ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 9.
