INTRODUCTION (Intro) Welcome to my second and hopefully one of many more FAQs to come. In this guide you will find very (and I mean VERY) detailed information about the various Gym Leaders and Trainers found in their respective Gyms, because for the most part you have to take them on before challenging the respective Gym Leader. I will give battle strategies for every Gym Leader battle that I believe are helpful and sometimes often overlooked, and very easy to comprehend. I will also give detailed information about the various Rival battles that occur in this game, just to see where I can run with that. Throughout this FAQ I will mention various Pokemon to use as well as attacks that will help you in the midst of battle. However, by no means am I implying that you *should* use those Pokemon or attacks. When it comes to in-game, practically anything works out well enough to use. I will simply mention that information to help you end the battle as quickly and effectively as possible. Amongst many other pieces of information I will provide you with the levels of the Pokemon you face in Gym battles so that if you so desire you can prepare ahead of time accordingly. Throughout this guide you will notice I do not take the time to list the type of information you might find in a general FAQ, such as how to get to a certain location. The reason being is, this is a specialized FAQ dealing with a specialized subject. For the most part I will only include information relative to this guide, though if I feel it's noteworthy to mention I will include it. I do not talk about how to Breed Pokemon, IVs and EVs, or things of that sort. If you need help with that, the best thing to do would be to consult another FAQ that deals with that subject. I wrote this FAQ because at the time there was only one other Gym Guide FAQ, and quite frankly I felt I could put out a better quality guide than of that already posted. I want this guide to be the definitive resource for Gym Leader battles, and I feel it can really help out a wide variety of people. So with that being said, it's on to the FAQ itself! .------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | II. Rival Battle I (rbi) This is not only your first Pokemon battle of the game, but it is also the first one of this FAQ. While some may not consider this to be a real Rival battle because of the tutorial interruptions I still list it just for the sake of completion. This is not only a mini-preview of your future Pokemon battles to come, but also how the information in this guide is organized. Trainer: Rival Pokemon: Charmander LV 5 Male (If Bulbasaur was your starter) Type: Fire Moveset: Scratch, Growl EXP: 69 Squirtle LV 5 Male (If Charmander was your starter) Type: Water Moveset: Tackle, Tail Whip EXP: 70 Bulbasaur LV 5 Male (If Squirtle was your starter) Type: Grass/Poison Moveset: Tackle, Growl EXP: 67 Rewards: $80 Strategy: So the strategy here is very basic. This is for the most part a tutorial match just so you can get the hang of battles. If you did some exploring in your room when the game started and managed to withdraw the Potion item from the PC this battle will be a breeze. Just chip away at your Rival's selected Pokemon while making sure you keep your own HP up. Don't be afraid to use that Potion if you feel the need comes up. Critical Hits can pop up at anytime. Defeat your Rival this first time for some easy cash and an additional level to your starting Pokemon. .------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | III. Rival Battle II (rbii) This fight is optional but it's not too difficult to win, plus you could use the experience points and a little cash never hurt anyone. Just like in every other Rival battle, it is subjective based off what starting Pokemon you selected. If you wish to fight this battle simply head west from Viridian City, eventually you'll be stopped by your Rival. Trainer: Rival Pokemon: Pidgey LV 9 Male Type: Normal/Flying Moveset: Tackle, Sand-Attack EXP: 105 Charmander LV 9 Male (If Bulbasuar was your starter) Type: Fire Moveset: Scratch, Growl EXP: 124 Squirtle LV 9 Male (If Charmander was your starter) Type: Water Moveset: Tackle, Tail Whip EXP: 126 Bulbasaur: LV 9 Male (If Squirtle was your starter) Type: Grass/Poison Moveset: Tackle, Growl EXP: -- Rewards: $144 Strategy: Your second bout against your Rival isn't much more troublesome than the first. He'll always have that Pidgey out in front. But oddly enough, even though the Pidgey is at LV 9 it doesn't have Gust at it's disposal. Nor will Charmander or Squirtle have Ember or Bubble to annoy you. So as you can see this won't be too hard. If you selected Charmander as your starting Pokemon I suggest you catch a Pikachu from Viridian Forest - not only will it absolutely dominant in this battle but it will come in handy later. If you took the time to catch some of the local Pokemon around here or even in Viridian Forest, and trained them to about the same level as your Rival's two Pokemon this will be a breeze. Pidgey's Sand-Attack can get very annoying if it's used numerous times, so if you don't want to risk a fainted Pokemon in this battle just switch out to another Pokemon. All in all this is an easy battle, and one you're more than capable of handling. .------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | IV. PEWTER CITY GYM (Pew01) This is the first Gym you take on, and it just happens to be the most simple in terms of layout, design, and difficulty. There's only one way to go, and that's up. Right to your very first Gym Trainer. Only one Trainer stands between you and the Gym Leader, so that's kind of nice. Trainer: Camper Liam Pokemon: Geodude LV 10 Male Type: Rock/Ground Moveset: Tackle, Defense Curl EXP: 183 Sandshrew LV 11 Male Type: Ground Moveset: Scratch, Defense Curl, Sand-Attack EXP: 219 Rewards: $220 =============================================================================== Trainer: Gym Leader Brock Pokemon: Geodude LV 12 Male Type: Rock/Ground Moveset: Tackle, Defense Curl EXP: 220 Onix LV 14 Male Type: Rock/Ground Moveset: Tackle, Bind, Rock Tomb EXP: 324 Rewards: $1400, TM39 Rock Tomb, BOULDERBADGE Strategy: Enter Brock, your first Gym Leader battle. Typically this battle is either one of two things - extremely easy or not so extremely easy. If you selected either Squirtle or Bulbasaur as your starting Pokemon and if they're at a decent level, say at least 11, then one-two hits from Bubble or Vine Whip will put Geodude and Onix away for the one-two-three. However, if you're sporting a Charmander as your starting Pokemon it requires a bit more strategy. If you're patient enough to raise your Charmander to a sturdy level for this fight it will learn Metal Claw. In theory you could take on both Geodude and Onix with your Metal Claw wielding Charmander, but I personally don't support this route. I suggest catching a Mankey on Route 22 (Where you fought Rival the second time) and raising it to a level you deem satisfactory. With Low Kick at it's disposal the battle will go along much smoother. If you think a Potion or two will save you then by all means use them. Onix has fair Speed for a Rock-type Pokemon, and where his Strength stat falters his Defense is tough to kick through, though it is very possible. You could also catch a Caterpie and raise it to a Butterfree, since when it reaches level 10 it will learn Confusion - but be warned that Butterfree is a Bug/Flying-type Pokemon, and thus suffers a double weakness against Onix's Rock Tomb. Pikachu won't help much in this fight seeing as how all of it's attacks will either not deal any damage whatsoever, or deal very little due to the Rock type's natural high Defense stat. Just stick to your guns and Brock will be finished soon enough. For winning you'll get $1400, TM39 which contains Rock Tomb and your first official Pokemon League Gym Badge, the BOULDERBADGE! =============================================================================== .------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | V. Rival Battle III (rbiii) Your Rival comes back with twice as many Pokemon in this fight as before, but not anymore difficult than before. If you come packing a well-rounded team your victory should be easy. Trainer: Rival Pokemon: Charmander LV 18 Male (If Bulbasaur was your starter) Type: Fire Moveset: Metal Claw, Ember, Growl, Scratch EXP: 250 Squirtle LV 18 Male (If Charmander was your starter) Type: Water Moveset: Tackle, Bubble, Tail Whip, Water Gun EXP: 253 Bulbasuar LV 18 Male (If Squirtle was your starter) Type: Grass/Poison Moveset: Tackle, Leech Seed, Growl, Vine Whip EXP: -- Pidgeotto LV 17 Male Type: Normal/Flying Moveset: Tackle, Sand-Attack, Gust, Quick Attack EXP: 411 Abra LV 16 Male Type: Psychic Moveset: Teleport EXP: 249 Rattata LV 15 Male Type: Normal Moveset: Tackle. Tail Whip, Quick Attack EXP: 183 Rewards: $288, Fame Checker His Pidgeotto will start out the battle. Sand-Attack again proves to be annoying, plus your Rival will often spam Quick Attack. If you have a Geodude with Rock Throw that will make short work of Pidgeotto. If that's not an option, a Thundershock or two from Pikachu will also dispatch it easily. For the rest of the fight you should still be set. Even though Abra is a new face at this point it only knows the Teleport move, which is useless right now. Select any Pokemon to take it out, it's practically free EXP. As for the Rattata it shouldn't give you too much stress. For some reason it doesn't even have Hyper Fang at it's disposal, so that makes your job all that much easier. As for the starting Pokemon you should have a type to counter it, but even if you don't there's nothing to worry about. A strong Normal-type Pokemon can handle it without much effort. All in all this battle isn't overly difficult if you come in prepared. .------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | VI. Cerulean City Gym (Cer02) Cerulean City Gym is another simple Gym in terms of layout. You could skip the Trainers but where's the enjoyment in that? Trainer: Swimmer Guy Luis Pokemon: Horsea LV 16 Male Type: Water Moveset: Bubble, Smokescreen, Leer EXP: 283 Shelder LV 16 Male Type: Water Moveset: Tackle, Withdraw, Icicle Spear, Supersonic EXP: 331 Rewards: $64 Trainer: Picknicker Diana Pokemon: Goldeen LV 19 Female Type: Water Moveset: Tail Whip, Water Sport, Supersonic, Horn Attack EXP: 451 =============================================================================== Trainer: Gym Leader Misty Pokemon: Staryu LV 18 Neuter Type: Water Moveset: Tackle, Harden, Recover, Water Pulse EXP: 408 Starmie LV 21 Neuter Type: Water/Psychic Moveset: Swift, Recover, Rapid Spin, Water Pulse EXP: 931 Rewards: $2400, TM03 Water Pulse, CASCADEBADGE Your second Gym battle is certainly more difficult than the first, but with a good team you can take down Misty's lone two Pokemon. As it is listed both her Staryu and Starmie know the Water Pulse technique. At this stage in the game Water Pulse is a hard hitting move. Even if the Pokemon that gets hit with it isn't necessarily weak against it, it will still pack one strong punch. Plus with a 20% chance of causing Confusion it can really mess up your chi. If you don't already have one at your disposoal, I highly suggest that you go up to Route 24 and catch some kind of Grass-type Pokemon, be it Oddish or Bellsprout, depending on what version you're playing. If you selected Bulbasaur as your starting Pokemon this battle will be very much easier. If however, Charmander or Squirtle were who you headed off with this battle may be a tad more cumbersome. Take out Staryu as quickly as you can to conserve your Pokemon's health. And again, beware of Water Pulse. A Thundershock or two should do the trick if you have Pikachu, though Staryu may use Recover to prolong it's life. When you finally knock Staryu out you'll be face to face with Starmie, probably the hardest Pokemon you've encounted thus far. If you have Thunder Wave or Stun Spore at your disposal I suggest using them right away. This will not only Paralyze Starmie but also reduce it's Speed by two levels. After this focus on depleting Starmie's HP while keeping your health up. Misty will occasionally use items in battle to increase her Pokemon's stats, as well as Super Potions to make sure her Pokemon stays in the battle. Lash out with Grass and Electric-type attacks to keep her on the defensive. With luck you'll score some helpful critical hits here and there. Another unique approach is to send out a "jobber" Pokemon that can easily withstand Water Pulse, though this strategy involves many Potions and more luck. While 20 PP is nothing to huff at, it will quickly dwindle if you've got a Grass or Water type taking the hits. While this approach only serves to draw the battle out, Swift and Rapid Spin hit much more lighter. As long as you keep your Pokemon's HP up and the hits rolling this battle will be yours. If you happen to have any Bug-type moves at hand they'll hit hard on Starmie (Since it is a Psychic dual-type). So if you caught a Zubat or Paras while in Mt. Moon this is when they'll prove useful, especially Paras. Have patience, for Misty will mostly drag the fight on with Potions here and there. For winning you'll get some cash, the Water Pulse TM and the CASCADEBADGE. =============================================================================== .------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | VII. Rival Battle IV (rbiv) It was not too long ago when you and your Rival had your last showdown, and his Pokemon team really hasn't improved since then. Just be sure you're fully healed before you take him on, in case you decided to fit any of the various Trainers aboard the S.S. Anne. Trainer: Rival Pokemon: Charmeleon LV 20 Male (If Bulbasaur was your starter) Type: Fire Moveset: Growl, Ember, Metal Claw, Smokescreen EXP: 607 Wartortle LV 20 Male (If Charmander was your starter) Type: Water Moveset: Bubble, Water Gun, Bite, Withdraw EXP: 612 Ivysaur LV 20 Male (If Squirtle was your starter) Type: Grass/Poison Moveset: Tackle, Leech Seed, Growl, Vine Whip EXP: -- Pidgeotto LV 19 Male Type: Normal/Flying Moveset: Tackle, Gust, Sand-Attack, Quick Attack EXP: 459 Raticate LV 16 Male Type: Normal Moveset: Tackle, Tail Whip, Quick Attack, Hyper Fang EXP: 397 Kadabra LV 18 Male Type: Psychic Moveset: Teleport, Confusion, Kinesis, Disable EXP: 558 Rewards: $720 Just as he always has done up to this point, your Rival will start off with his prized bird Pokemon Pidgeotto. You know how to deal with it, clip it's wings with an Electric-type attack or two, or crush it with a Rock-type move. Sand-Attack will again be a nuisance, and those cheap shots with Quick Attack can pester oneself, but he'll drop soon enough. The Rattata has evolved into a pesky Raticate complete with Hyper Fang. If you caught a Mankey around the earliest parts of the game and have raised it well enough to this point, it should be able to make short work of Raticate. Even a Rock-type would do well because they're naturally resistant to Normal-type attacks. Rival's Abra has evolved into a Kadabra, which has a very high Speed and Special Attack stat, good if you're using it, not so good if you're fighting it. Do not send out any Fighting or Poison type Pokemon because Kadabra has the ability to make short work of them. Instead take it down with strong attacks from a Pokemon that doesn't falter against Psychic type attacks. Kadabra's Defense stat is very poor, so a strong hit or two should do the trick. Bug, Dark and Ghost type attacks work best if you have any at your command. As for the starter, not much has changed except it's reached it's second level evolutionary form but you should have a Pokemon ready to exploit it's weakness. Win the fight and send your Rival home packing again. C'est La Vie. .------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | VIII. Vermillion City Gym (Ver03) Lt. Surge's Gym is home to some of the more electrifying Pokemon you've encountered thus far. The "Lightning American" himself (I wonder how that's possible considering Kanto isn't exactly part of the United States) is behind two barriers of electricity. You disable these barriers by flipping switches found in the Gym's many trash bins. Usually after you've found one switch the other isn't too far from it. Unfortunately the placement of the switches are completely random each game, so I can't offer you much help after that. From the Trainer information you'll quickly find that Water and Bird Pokemon have no place in this Gym, as they'll quickly find themselves getting shocked and as well as shaken. Bring in your best Ground-type Pokemon. Trainer: Sailor Dwayne Pokemon: Pikachu LV 21 Male Type: Electric Moveset: Thunder Wave, Quick Attack, Double Team, Slam EXP: 369 Pikachu LV 21 Male Type: Electric Moveset: Thunder Wave, Quick Attack, Double Team, Slam EXP: 369 Rewards: $672 Trainer: Engineer Bailey Pokemon: Voltorb LV 21 Neuter Type: Electric Moveset: Tackle, Screech, Sonicboom, Spark EXP: 463 Magnemite LV 21 Neuter Type: Electric/Steel Moveset: Thundershock, Supersonic, Sonicboom, Thunder Wave EXP: 400 Rewards: $1008 Trainer: Gentlemen Tucker Pokemon: Pikachu LV 23 Male Type: Electric Moveset: Thunder Wave, Quick Attack, Double Team, Slam EXP: 403 Rewards: $1656 =============================================================================== Trainer: Gym Leader Lt. Surge Pokemon: Voltorb LV 21 Neuter Type: Electric Moveset: Sonicboom, Screech, Tackle, Shock Wave EXP: 463 Pikachu LV 18 Male Type: Electric Moveset: Quick Attack, Thunder Wave, Double Team, Shock Wave EXP: 315 Raichu LV 24 Male Type: Electric Moveset: Quick Attack, Thunder Wave, Double Team, Shock Wave EXP: 627 Rewards: $2400. TM34 Shock Wave, THUNDERBADGE If you don't already have a Ground-type Pokemon at your disposal I suggest departing from the Gym, go east from Vermillion city, and catch a Diglett or Dugtrio in Diglett's Cave. This will help out immensely, not only because Diglett is a Ground-type Pokemon and thus negates the Shock Wave attack, but they also happen to have a nice Speed stat. You can easily take down all three Pokemon with a strong Ground-type attack. Raichu and Pikachu have the exact same moveset, and will use Double Team to annoy you. Quickly take them down before they become practically impossible to hit. Throughout the fight Surge will use items like Full Heals and Super Potions to keep the fight going. Again, I strongly advise you not use Flying or Water type Pokemon as they'll quickly fall to Shock Wave. If you do happen to get hit with Thunder Wave don't hesitate to use a Paralyze Heal in order to heal your condition. Smash them with hard Ground-type attacks quickly and victory will soon be yours. Winning this battle gets you $2400, the TM34 Shock Wave and your third Gym badge, the THUNDERBADGE. =============================================================================== .------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | IX. Rival Battle V (rbv) This is where you start to see great variety in your Rival's Pokemon roster. It depends entirely upon which Pokemon you selected as your starter, and it always will. For now I'm going to list the Pokemon he always will use and the ones he will potentially use, later I will better organize the information. Like I said in the Introduction segment I'm still trying to figure out where to run with this. It depends on the feedback I get. Trainer: Rival Pokemon: Pidgeotto LV 25 Male Type: Normal/Flying Moveset: Sand-Attack, Gust, Quick Attack, Whirlwind EXP: 604 Kadabra LV 20 Male Type: Psychic Moveset: Teleport, Kinesis, Confusion, Disable EXP: 621 Gyarados LV 22 Male Type: Water/Flying Moveset: Thrash, Bite EXP: 1008 Growlithe LV 22 Male Type: Fire Moveset: Bite, Ember, Roar EXP: -- Exeggcute LV 23 Male Type: Grass/Psychic Moveset: Hypnosis, Reflect, Leech Seed, Confusion EXP: 483 Charmeleon LV 25 Male Type: Fire Moveset: Growl, Ember, Metal Claw, Smokescreen EXP: 760 Wartortle LV 25 Male Type: Water Moveset: Tail Whip, Water Gun, Bubble, Bite EXP: -- Ivysaur LV 25 Male Type: Grass/Poison Moveset: Growl, Vine Whip, Leech Seed, Poisonpowder EXP: -- Rewards: $900 At this point your Rival has constructed a well balanced team, but still one with flaws that can be exploited. Zap his Pidgeotto out of the sky with a strong Electric-type attack, as it will use annoying moves like Whirlwind and the always annoying Sand-Attack. If your Rival has a Gyarados the same kind of Electric-type move you used against Pidgeotto will work even better against Gyarados, seeing as how it's 4X weak against Electric moves. Smack Kadabra down with a strong physical attack, just not a fighting type move. As for the rest of his line-up you'll do best to counter with types that have an edge over his Pokemon. Don't hesitate to use a Super Potion every now and then should the need arise. .------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | X. Giovanni Battle I (Giv01) So you've finally reached the Team Rocket Boss. Giovanni is quite a step up from the Grunts you were fighting before him. But as always, he can still be beaten. Trainer: Boss Giovanni Pokemon: Onix LV 25 Male Type: Rock/Ground Moveset: Bind, Rock Throw, Harden, Rage EXP: 577 Rhyhorn LV 24 Male Type: Ground/Rock Moveset: Tail Whip, Stomp, Fury Attack, Scary Face EXP: 693 Kangaskhan LV 29 Female Type: Normal Moveset: Bite, Tail Whip, Fake Out, Mega Punch EXP: 1087 Rewards: $2900 Onix isn't a new Pokemon to you, and you're well aware of how to deal with it. Finish him quickly with Grass or Water-type attacks. Rhyhorn may intimidate you at first but don't worry too much, the same tactics you took down Onix with will work just as well here. Rhyhorn has a strong Attack stat so knock it out quickly. Kangaskhan however, might make you think about how to approach this battle. She (literally) packs a strong punch, though the attack isn't the most accurate, so use accuracy-lowering attacks such as Sand-Attack and Smokescreen if you have them. Fake Out is a pesky attack that causes the Pokemon that gets hit with it to Flinch, but only on the first turn. In Kangaskhan's powerful fists though, it hurts. Send out a strong Fighting type Pokemon to land Super Effective hits on Kangaskhan, Rock-types will also work well enough as they are resistant to most of her attacks. When the beast finally falls, Giovanni will concede defeat. .------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | XI. Celadon City Gym (Cel04) You'll need a Pokemon that knows the Cut HM move in order to get very far in Erika's Gym. As for the Trainers found in the Gym, all of them have Pokemon that can inflict several different status ailments. Carry along a lot of items like Antidotes, Awakenings and Paralyze Heals. Flying and Fire type Pokemon will have a field day in this Gym, so well Psychic types because most Pokemon in this Gym are dual type with Poison. Trainer: Lass Kay Pokemon: Bellsprout LV 23 Female Type: Grass/Poison Moveset: Sleep Powder, Poisonpowder, Stun Spore, Acid EXP: 414 Weepinbell LV 23 Female Type: Grass/Poison Moveset: Wrap, Sleep Powder, Poisonpowder, Stun Spore EXP: 744 Rewards: $368 Trainer: Beauty Bridget Pokemon: Oddish LV 21 Female Type: Grass/Poison Moveset: Sweet Scent, Poisonpowder, Stun Spore, Sleep Powder EXP: 351 Bellsprout LV 21 Female Type: Grass/Poison Moveset: Wrap, Sleep Powder, Poisonpowder, Stun Spore EXP: 378 Oddish LV 21 Female Type: Grass/Poison Moveset: Sweet Scent, Poisonpowder, Stun Spore, Sleep Powder EXP: 351 Bellsprout LV 21 Female Type: Grass/Poison Moveset: Wrap, Sleep Powder, Poisonpowder, Stun Spore EXP: 378 Rewards: $1512 Trainer: Picknicker Tina Pokemon: Bulbasaur LV 24 Male Type: Grass/Poison Moveset: Vine Whip, Poisonpowder, Sleep Powder, Razor Leaf EXP: 328 Ivysaur LV Male Type: Grass/Poison Moveset: Vine Whip, Poisonpowder, Sleep Powder, Razor Leaf EXP: 724 Rewards: $480 Trainer: Beauty Tamia Pokemon: Bellsprout LV 24 Female Type: Grass/Poison Moveset: Sleep Powder, Poisonpowder, Stun Spore, Acid EXP: 432 Bellsprout LV 24 Female Type: Grass/Poison Moveset: Sleep Powder, Poisonpowder, Stun Spore, Acid EXP: 432 Rewards: $1728 Trainer: Cooltrainer Mary Pokemon: Bellsprout LV 22 Female Type: Grass/Poison Moveset: Wrap, Stun Spore, Poisonpowder, Growth EXP: 396 Oddish LV 22 Female Type: Grass/Poison Moveset: Poisonpowder, Stun Spore, Absorb, Sweet Scent EXP: 367 Weepinbell LV 22 Female Type: Grass/Poison Moveset: Vine Whip, Stun Spore, Poisonpowder, Growth EXP: 711 Gloom LV 22 Female Type: Grass/Poison Moveset: Absorb, Stun Spore, Poisonpowder, Sweet Scent EXP: 621 Ivysaur LV 22 Male Type: Grass/Poison Moveset: Razor Leaf, Sleep Powder, Vine Whip, Leech Seed EXP: 664 Rewards: $792 Trainer: Lass Lisa Pokemon: Oddish LV 23 Female Type: Grass/Poison Moveset: Poisonpowder, Stun Spore, Sleep Powder, Acid EXP: 384 Gloom LV 23 Female Type: Grass/Poison Moveset: Sweet Scent, Stun Spore, Poisonpowder, Sleep Powder EXP: 649 Rewards: $368 Trainer: Beauty Lori Pokemon: Exeggcute LV 24 Female Type: Grass/Psychic Moveset: Hypnosis, Reflect, Leech Seed, Confusion EXP: 504 Rewards: $1728 =============================================================================== Trainer: Gym Leader Erika Pokemon: Victreebell LV 29 Female Type: Grass/Poison Moveset: Stun Spore, Acid, Giga Drain, Poisonpowder EXP: 1186 Tangela LV 24 Female Type: Grass Moveset: Poisonpowder, Constrict, Giga Drain, Ingrain EXP: 853 Vileplume LV 29 Female Type: Grass/Poison Moveset: Sleep Powder, Acid, Stun Spore, Giga Drain EXP: 1143 Rewards: $2900. TM19 Giga Drain, RAINBOWBADGE This is where that Charmander you selected at the start of the game will come in handy. And even if you don't have one, another Fire-type Pokemon such as Vulpix or Growlithe will do just fine. Personally I was using a Ninetails in this fight, which happened to be set with Safeguard and Flamethrower. But I do understand that not everyone will have this when they take on Erika. So keep to Flying, Fire and Psychic type attacks. Tangela is one of the few pure Grass type Pokemon in the Pokemon universe, but that just means it's weaker to things most Grass Pokemon aren't, like Poison and Bug attacks. If you can put up a Safeguard or somehow prevent your Pokemon from feeling status attacks, you've essentially cut Erika's means of attacking in half. Beware though, Giga Drain does hit hard and replenishes her Pokemon. It shouldn't prove too much of an issue though. Don't be afraid to use healing items if it means keeping your Pokemon in the fight. Win the battle and you'll get $2900, the TM19 Giga Drain and the coveted RAINBOWBADGE. =============================================================================== .------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | XII. Fuchsia City Gym (Fu05) Koga's Gym is somewhat of an oddity. While he may appear close, Koga is really behind a series of invisible walls. It's really not that hard to navigate around them to reach him, through trial and error you can figure it out. The only thing that will slow you down are the various Trainers you'll encounter. There are quite a few Psychic type Pokemon to fight, nowhere near as much Poison types as you might think. Still, bring along plenty of Antidotes just in case. You'll notice that the Pokemon you'll encounter in this Gym have for some strange reason have jumped in levels. This should be an indication to you that some training needs to be done before tackling it, unless you feel your're capable Trainer: Juggler Kayden Pokemon: Hypno LV 38 Male Type: Psychic Moveset: Headbutt, Poison Gas, Meditate, Psychic EXP: 1342 Rewards: $1520 Trainer: Juggler Kirk Pokemon: Drowzee LV 31 Male Type: Psychic Moveset: Headbutt, Poison Gss, Meditate, Psychic EXP: 676 Drowzee LV 31 Male Type: Psychic Moveset: Headbutt, Poison Gss, Meditate, Psychic EXP: 676 Drowzee LV 31 Male Type: Psychic Moveset: Headbutt, Poison Gss, Meditate, Psychic EXP: 676 Kadabra LV 31 Male Type: Psychic Moveset: Psybeam, Reflect, Recover, Future Sight EXP: 963 Rewards: $1240 Trainer: Juggler Nate Pokemon: Drowzee LV 34 Male Type: Psychic Moveset: Headbutt, Poison Gas, Meditate, Psychic EXP: 742 Kadabra LV 34 Male Type: Psychic Moveset: Reflect, Recover, Future Sight, Role Play EXP: 1056 Rewards: $1360 Trainer: Trainer Edgar Pokemon: Arbok LV 33 Male Type: Poison Moveset: Poison Sting, Bite, Glare, Screech EXP: 1039 Arbok LV 33 Male Type: Poison Moveset: Poison Sting, Bite, Glare, Screech EXP: 1039 Sandslash LV 33 Male Type: Ground Moveset: Sand-Attack, Poison Sting, Slash, Swift EXP: 1152 Rewards: $1320 Trainer: Tamer Phil Pokemon: Sandslash LV 34 Male Type: Ground Moveset: Sand-Attack, Poison Sting, Slash, Swift EXP: 1186 Arbok LV 34 Male Type: Poison Moveset: Poison Sting, Bite, Glare, Screech EXP: 1001 Rewards: $1360 Trainer: Juggler Shawn Pokemon: Drowzee LV 34 Male Type: Psychic Moveset: Headbutt, Poison Gas, Meditate, Psychic EXP: 742 Hypno LV 34 Male Type: Psychic Moveset: Confusion, Headbutt, Poison Gas, Meditate EXP: 1201 Rewards: $1360 =============================================================================== Trainer: Gym Leader Koga Pokemon: Koffing LV 39 Male Type: Poison Moveset: Selfdestruct, Sludge, Smokescreen, Toxic EXP: 903 Koffing LV 39 Male Type: Poison Moveset: Selfdestruct, Sludge, Smokescreen, Toxic EXP: 903 Muk LV 39 Male Type: Poison Moveset: Minimize, Sludge, Acid Armor, Toxic EXP: 1311 Weezing LV 43 Male Type: Poison Moveset: Tackle, Sludge, Smokescreen, Toxic EXP: 1553 Rewards: $4300, TM06 Toxic, SOULBADGE The battle with Koga may prove to be somewhat difficult, especially if your Pokemon are underleveled and you don't have type advantages. I suggest either bringing a powerful Psychic type in an attempt to sweep his team. The Koffings and Weezing can't be hurt from Ground-type attacks because of their Levitate ability, so you'll have to fall back on Psychic attacks to get the job done. If you are hit with Toxic I suggest using an Antidote right away, unlike your usual Poison status the health it takes off increases each time, so over time it will be impossible to survive. =============================================================================== .------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | XIII. Rival Battle VI (rbvi) As you may or may not have noticed your Rival's Pokemon team has gotten better quite dramatically compared to the last time you fought him. His starter as well as his Pidgeot and Alakazam have reached their final evolutionary stages and his Pokemon's levels are more than enough to smack down an unprepared team. Make sure your Pokemon are fully restored before taking him on, you'll want to be at your best condition. Trainer: Rival Pokemon: Pidgeot LV 37 Male Type: Normal/Flying Moveset: Quick Attack, Whirlwind, Wing Attack, Featherdance EXP: 1363 Alakazam LV 35 Male Type: Psychic Moveset: Reflect, Recover, Future Sight, Calm Mind EXP: 1395 Gyarados LV 35 Male Type: Water/Flying Moveset: Water/Flying EXP: 1605 Exeggcute Lv 37 Male Type: Grass/Psychic Moveset: Confusion, Stun Spore, Poisonpowder, Sleep Powder EXP: 735 Charizard LV 40 Male Type: Fire/Flying Moveset: Smokescreen, Scary Face, Flamethrower, Wing Attack EXP: 1800 Rewards: $1440 His Pidgeot has dropped Sand-Attack for the time being, so it won't be too much of an annoyer this time around. Greet it with an Electric-type attack to take it out. Repeat the same tactic with his Blastoise or Gyarados. Alakazam is indeed a threat to be reckoned with, except the only damaging move it has is Future Sight. Bring in a Pokemon such as Snorlax that has a strong Attack stat and can take a hit or two. As per the usual, type advantages are the key to victory. Your Rival's starter may prove to be tough, but just pit one Pokemon that it falters against to it and you'll claim victory soon enough. .------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | XIV. Giovanni Battle II (Giv02) So, big Boss Rocket is coming back for round 2! His Pokemon have improved since last time and still pack a punch but with a fully rested Pokemon team, you'll handle him just fine. Trainer: Boss Giovanni Pokemon: Nidorino LV 37 Male Type: Poison Moveset: Poison Sting, Horn Attack, Helping Hand, Fury Attack EXP: 934 Nidoqueen LV 41 Female Type: Poison/Ground Moveset: Tail Whip, Double Kickm Poison Sting, Body Slam EXP: 1704 Rhyhorn LV 37 Male Type: Ground/Rock Moveset: Stomp, Scary Face, Fury Attack, Rock Blast EXP: 1069 Kangaskhan LV 35 Female Type: Normal Moveset: Tail Whip, Fake Out, Mega Punch, Rage EXP: 1312 Rewards: $4100 Psychic-type attacks will make short work of Nidorino and Nidoqueen. Rhyhorn is strong but falls quickly to Water and Grass-type attacks. You could also bring out your best Fighting-type Pokemon and pummel them with a strong Fighting-type attack. By "them" I'm referring to Rhyhorn and Kangaskhan, who is just as strong as she was the last time you took her on. .------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | XV. Saffron City Gym (Saf06) Saffron City Gym is probably the trickiest Gym to navigate around. Personally I always stumble around until I can find Sabrina herself, this way I usually end up fighting all of the Trainers present. But for those who would rather skip all of that, from the initial warp pad in the Gym that everyone must walk on go up, down, down, up, down, up, up, down, down, up, up, up, down, and down once again. But for those who just can't help but fight the Trainers, this data is for you...and everyone else really. If there's any type of Pokemon you should never bring in this fight exists, it's Fighting types - they'll get blasted six ways from Sunday. Instead, assualt her Pokemon with Ghost, Dark and Bug type attacks if you happen to have any at your disposal. Venomoth goes down fast with Fire type moves, as well as (somewhat ironically enough) Psychic type moves. As for her Alakazam, I suggest trying to take it down as fast as you can. It will use Calm Mind to not only increase it's Special Defense stat but to also make her Special Attacks stronger, which would be Psychic in this case. Luckily her Alakazam has low Defense so hammer away with whatever you have. Sabrina will use healing items such as Full Heals and Hyper Potions to keep the fight up, so try to outlast this Psychic nightmare and win your MARSHBADGE! And no that is not a content error up there, Sabrina's Mr. Mime was female when I fought her. Yeah, that caught me off guard too. =============================================================================== .------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | XVI. Cinnabar Island Gym (Cin07) Cinnibar Island Gym is quite the interesting Gym. You can either answer some questions, avoid any Trainer fights altogether, and go straight for Blaine himself. In case you'd rather fight the Trainers I'm still going to list the data for them, but for those who want the quiz answers here they are in order, though all of the questions are very easy and you can probably get them all on your own. Answers (in order of the questions asked): yes, no, no, no, yes, no. Bring along Water, Ground and Rock type Pokemon. Grass, Bug and Ice types will feel out of place, and quickly knocked out. All of Blaine's Pokemon know the powerful Fire Blast move, and it always hits hard. Thankfully the move itself isn't the most accurate and it's only 5 PP. If you have a Blastoise or another Water-type Pokemon in your crew I suggest you drown his Pokemon out. Rock and Ground types will also do well in this battle, assuming they have good Rock or Ground-type attacks set with them. Arcanine is a real pain. It's Defense rating isn't too bad, neither is it's Speed rating. Plus Fire Blast hits very hard coming from him. Again, try to use powerful Water-type attacks quickly. You should also try to use moves that lower accuracy or increase your Evasion. This will make the already-hard to connect Fire Blast even more easy to dodge, and it will save your team from a world of hurt. Blaine will use healing items to keep his Pokemon in the fight, but this is to be expected at this point. Heal your burns, dodge Fire Blast and put him away for the count. Among the usual prizes you'll win the VOLCANOBADGE! =============================================================================== .------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | XVII. Viridian City Gym (Vir08) Ah, the very last Gym on your Pokemon League challenge. It has been a long and hard fought journey. Unfortunately there are quite a few Trainers in here, but you really only need to fight a handful to reach the Gym Leader. But for the sake of giving you (the reader) the best darn FAQ I can, here's the complete Trainer data...plus it would be a copout if I left you hanging now! You'll see the Trainers themselves pack some Fighting, Ground and Poison type Pokemon so plan accordingly. There aren't many tricks in this Gym, just some trial and error involving the directional speed pads. Giovanni dropped his Kangaskhan for another Rhyhorn it looks like. You should already know how to deal with these Pokemon. For the two Rhyhorns and even Dugtrio, Water and Grass type attacks will quickly tear through them. It is worth mentioning, that if you caught a Gastly earlier in the game and managed to train it so it's either a Haunter or Gengar at this point in the game, this fight will be made incredibly easier. This is because against a Ghost/Poison type Pokemon with the Levitate ability, Dugtrio can't connect with anything whatsoever, and Nidoqueen and Nidoking have to use Poison Sting. So if you play your cards right that single Pokemon is worth taking down three out of Giovanni's five. Even if you don't have one, Psychic, Ground and Water type attacks can dispatch the two Nidos in this fight. Earthquake is a very powerful technique though so if you take a hit from it know that it packs a punch. If you win this fight you'll get some cash, TM26 Earthquake and the EARTHBADGE, your final Pokemon League Badge. Congratulations! =============================================================================== .------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | XVIII. Rival Battle VII (rbvii) So your Rival wants to go one more round before you head off to the Pokemon League eh? Well that shouldn't be too much of a problem, after all you did just officially conquer all eight Gyms in Kanto. Your Rival's Pokemon are the best they have ever been up to this point, so please be sure that your team is just as good in shape. And plan ahead. Trainer: Rival Pokemon: Pidgeot LV 47 Male Type: Normal/Flying Moveset: Featherdance, Wing Attack, Gust, Quick Attack EXP: 1731 Rhyhorn LV 45 Male Type: Ground/Rock Moveset: Take Down, Horn Drill, Rock Blast, Fury Attack EXP: 1300 Alakazam LV 47 Male Type: Psychic Moveset: Psychic, Calm Mind, Future Sight, Disable EXP: 1872 Gyarados LV 45 Male Type: Water/Flying Moveset: Hydro Pump, Twister, Leer, Rain Dance EXP: 2062 Exeggcute LV 45 Male Type: Grass/Psychic Moveset: Solarebeam, Poisonpowder, Stun Spore, Sleep Powder EXP: 945 Charizard LV 53 Male Type: Fire/Flying Moveset: Flamethrower, Wing Attack, Scary Face, Slash EXP: 2373 Rewards: $1908 Unless you happen to be insanely overleveled this battle might prove to give you a workout. Pidgeot has Gust in his moveset, which is entirely out of place and I'm not quite sure why it's included. But regardless, Thunderbolt/Thunder it out of the sky, crush it with Rock type attacks or freeze it solid with Ice type moves, Flying Pokemon have a lot of disadvantages. If your Rival is sporting a Growlithe, eliminate it quickly before it starts to annoy you. Exeggcute has many status-changing moves, so set up a Safeguard or just take it out really quick. Gyarados again falls too easily to Electric-type attacks, but I do give it props for having Hydro Pump. Your Rival's starter will be strong but at this stage in the game I'm sure you'll have something for it. Rock type attacks will work wonders against Charizard, Venusaur will falter against Fire as well as Ice, Flying and Psychic. Blastoise is tough but a Grass or Electric type can handle it without much stress. Alakazam is somewhat of a doozie though because it's fast and hits hard with Psychic. I suggest tossing out your best jobber against it to take up a few hits and dish out some damage as well. For some reason it's armed with Disable, again I'm not so sure why but that only works to your favor seeing as how it isn't Recover. Win this fight and you're free to head towards the Elite Four. .------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | XIX. Elite Four Round 1 (E4R1) Here you are, the Elite Four. This is everything you've trained for, and now here it is. As long as your Pokemon are at least LV 50, and you have a decent team you should be fine. Bring along lots of healing items and items that serve to replenish your PP. You'll also notice I've taken the time to list their Pokemon's specific abilities. I figured that it IS the Elite Four, so why not help you out as much as I can? Well with that said, here we go. Take a nice deep breath and move forward to your first challenge. =============================================================================== Trainer: Elite Four Lorelei Pokemon: Dewgong LV 52 Female Type: Ice/Water Moveset: Surf, Hail, Ice Beam, Safeguard Ability: Thick Fat EXP: 1960 Cloyster LV 51 Female Type: Water/Ice Moveset: Spikes, Hail, Dive, Protect Ability: Shell Armor EXP: 2218 Slowbro LV 52 Female Type: Water/Psychic Moveset: Yawn, Ice Beam, Surf, Amnesia Ability: Oblivious EXP: 1827 Jynx LV 54 Female Type: Ice/Psychic Moveset: Attract, Lovely Kiss, Ice Beam, Doubleslap Ability: Oblivious EXP: 1584 Lapras LV 54 Female Type: Ice/Water Moveset: Body Slam, Confuse Ray, Surf, Ice Beam Ability: Water Absorb EXP: 2533 Rewards: $5400 Lorelei and her Pokemon may look intimidating, but all of them are dual-types. If you bring in a strong Electric-type Pokemon such as Zapdos, Magneton or Jolteon with a powerful Electric type attack you can sweep a good portion of her team. Cloyster can serve to be a real pain in the side with it's high Defense stat. As for Jynx, Fire or Rock type attacks will take care of her if you have one in your line-up. =============================================================================== =============================================================================== Trainer: Elite Four Bruno Pokemon: Onix LV 51 Male Type: Rock/Ground Moveset: Earthquake, Iron Tail, Rock Tomb, Roar Ability: Rock Head EXP: 1179 Onix LV 54 Male Type: Rock/Ground Moveset: Earthquake, Iron Tail, Sand Tomb, Double Edge Ability: Rock Head EXP: 1249 Hitmonlee LV 53 Male Type: Fighting Moveset: Brick Break, Mega Kick, Facade, Foresight Ability: Limber EXP: 1578 Hitmonchan LV 53 Male Type: Fighting Moveset: Sky Uppercut, Rock Tomb, Counter, Mach Punch Ability: Keen Eye EXP: 1590 Machamp LV 56 Male Type: Fighting Moveset: Cross Chop, Rock Tomb, Scary Face, Bulk Up Ability: Guts EXP: 2316 Rewards: $5600 Your fight against Bruno is actually rather simple. His two Onix Pokemon will go down with one good hit from a Grass or Water type move, quickly thining his Pokemon team to three. If you have a strong Psychic type they'll do very well in this fight, especially if they come packing Psychic. You can also bring in Haunter or Gengar for an effective plan. If you'd rather not use your Psychic TM then go with the Hypnosis-Dream Eater combination. This will not only deal very powerful damage, but it also restore your Pokemon's HP. Beware though, Hitmonlee knows Foresight, and if it's used against your Ghost type Pokemon it's advantage of not being hit by Normal or Fighting type attacks is lost unless you switch out. End the battle quickly to conserve your resources and to keep things rolling along. =============================================================================== =============================================================================== Trainer: Elite Four Agatha Pokemon: Gengar LV 54 Female Type: Ghost/Poison Moveset: Shadow Punch, Double Team, Toxic, Confuse Ray Ability: Levitate EXP: 2197 Haunter LV 54 Female Type: Ghost/Poison Moveset: Mean Look, Curse, Hypnosis, Dream Eater Ability: Levitate EXP: 1431 Golbat LV 54 Female Type: Poison/Flying Moveset: Poison Fang, Air Cutter, Confuse Ray, Bite Ability: Guts EXP: 1978 Gengar LV 58 Female Type: Ghost/Poison Moveset: Shadow Ball, Hypnosis, Nightmare, Sludge Bomb Ability: Levitate EXP: 2361 Arbok LV 56 Female Type: Poison Moveset: Sludge Bomb, Screech, Iron Tail, Bite EXP: 1764 Rewards: $5800 Agatha's approach to battling would be more effective if there were more than Four Ghost type Pokemon to select from, and at this point in the game even less than that. Unfortunately for her, all of her Pokemon are weak against Psychic-type moves, so if you have a high-leveled Psychic Pokemon at your disposal it can easily sweep her team. However this comes up with a few small issues - As you can see she has a high level Gengar complete with Shadow Ball, which can quickly mess up your prized Psychic type. So come in knowing it has the potential to be a clean sweep fight, but also be aware that something can go wrong, or at the very least, now how you had planned. =============================================================================== =============================================================================== Trainer: Elite Four Lance Pokemon: Gyarados LV 56 Male Type: Water/Flying Moveset: Hyper Beam, Dragon Rage, Twister, Bite Ability: Intimidate EXP: 2568 Dragonair LV 54 Male Type: Dragon Moveset: Outrage, Safeguard, Thunder Wave, Hyper Beam Ability: Shed Skin EXP: 1665 Aerodactyl LV 58 Male Type: Rock/Flying Moveset: Ancientpower, Wing Attack, Scary Face, Hyper Beam Ability: Rock Head EXP: 2509 Dragonair LV 54 Male Type: Dragon Moveset: Hyper Beam, Outrage, Dragon Rage, Safeguard Ability: Shed Skin EXP: 1665 Dragonite LV 60 Male Type: Dragon/Flying Moveset: Outrage, Safeguard, Hyper Beam, Wing Attack Ability: Inner Focus EXP: 2802 Rewards: $6000 Lance will probably slow things down for you just a bit. The first thing that you should do is to fry the ever-loving crap out of his Gyarados with Thunder or Thunderbolt. If not you may find yourself getting faceplanted with Hyper Beam, and unfortunately Gyarados has a very nice Attack stat. Once that is taken care of it's on to the rest of his team. As you will notice Lance uses the rare Dragon type Pokemon in his party. And this will probably be your very first taste of them. Unfortunately for Lance Dragonite suffers a double weakness to Ice-type attacks. So unleash with Ice Beam, Blizzard, what have you. Outrage is a powerful Dragon type attack that will run for 2-3 turns and then confuse the Pokemon that used it, but most likely Lance will have put up a Safeguard to ensure his Pokemon don't suffer any status changes. Oddly enough though, Dragon types are weak against Dragon type moves. So if any are at your command use them. As for Aerodactyl, it is an incredibly fast Pokemon with a strong punch. Take it down quickly with Water, Electric, Ice and even Steel type moves. Fight smart and you'll conquer Lance without much stress, it just might not be the quickest of fights. =============================================================================== Trainer: Champion Rival Pokemon: Pidgeot LV 59 Male Type: Normal/Flying Moveset: Aerial Ace, Whirlwind, Sand-Attack, Featherdance Ability: Keen Eye EXP: 2173 Alakazam LV 57 Male Type: Psychic Moveset: Reflect, Psychic, Recover, Future Sight Ability: Sychronize EXP: 2271 Rhydon LV 59 Male Type: Ground/Rock Moveset: Earthquake, Rock Tomb, Scary Face, Take Down Ability: Lightning Rod EXP: 2578 Charizard LV 63 Male Type: Fire/Flying Moveset: Fire Blast, Aerial Ace, Slash, Fire Spin Ability: Blaze EXP: 3016 Venusaur LV 63 Male Type: Grass/Poison Moveset: Solarbeam, Sunny Day, Growth, Synthesis Ability: Overgrow EXP: 2808 Blastoise LV 63 Male Type: Water Moveset: Hydro Pump, Surf, Rain Dance, Body Slam Ability: Torrent EXP: 2975 Gyarados LV 59/61 Male Type: Water/Flying Moveset: Hyrdo Pump, Thrash, Bite, Dragon Rage Ability: Intimidate EXP: 2704 Arcanine LV 61 Male Type: Fire Moveset: Flamethrower, Extremespeed, Bite, Roar Ability: Intimidate EXP: 2784 Exeggutor LV 59 Male Type: Grass/Psychic Moveset: Giga Drain, Light Screen, Egg Bomb, Sleep Powder Ability: Chlorophyll EXP: 2677 Rewards: $6600 Ah, the final battle of the game against the one who mocked you from the very start. Your Rival's team is well balanced but as always has some pretty bad dents in the armor, if you will. You already know how to deal with Pidgeot, I suggest doing so before it uses Sand-Attack to lower your accuracy terribly low. Rhydon may be big and intimidating, but one wave of a good Water or Grass type attack and that gentle giant will tumble. Alakazam may prove to be a pain but Rival usually saves him for last. Whenever he does come out, wail on it with strong physical attacks. Say, a Snorlax using Shadow Ball would certainly mess it up. As for the rest of his well balanced team use simple type matches for your advantage. Gyarados will fall fast to Thunder like he always does, Exeggutor will be served up fried or scrambled with a powerful Fire type move, or Ice, whatever you can pull off. Arcanine can be drowned out with Water type attacks though it may take two or three, I suggest using Rock or Ground type moves. As you should expect by now, Rival will bust out the healing items in order to postpone his obvious defeat, so keep your Pokemon's HP up and PP conserved. Win the fight and you end Rival's short reign as Pokemon Champion. Congratulations, you beat the game! .------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | XX. Elite Four Round 2 (E4R2) So you've decided to take on the Elite Four again have you? Well there's not much wrong with that, it is good experience after all. But as you will find out their Pokemon have changed slightly, so your's should follow suit. =============================================================================== Trainer: Elite Four Lorelei Pokemon: Dewgong LV 64 Female Type: Water/Ice Moveset: Ice Beam, Surf, Double Team, Signal Beam Ability: Thick Fat EXP: 2413 Cloyster LV 63 Female Type: Water/Ice Moveset: Ice Beam, Surf, Rain Dance, Supersonic Ability: Shell Armor EXP: 2738 Piloswine LV 63 Female Type: Ground/Ice Moveset: Blizzard, Earthquake, Rock Slide, Double Edge Ability: Oblivious EXP: 2160 Lapras LV 66 Female Type: Water/Ice Moveset: Psychic, Thunder, Surf, Ice Beam Ability: Water Absorb EXP: 3096 Jynx LV 66 Female Type: Ice/Psychic Moveset: Psychic, Ice Beam, Lovely Kiss, Attract Ability: Oblivious EXP: 1934 Lorelei's Pokemon roster hasn't changed dramatically, Slowbro has been moved with Piloswine, and obviously their attacks are slightly different. Use Water type attacks to take down Piloswine, you could use Fire as well but he comes packing Earthquake and Rock Slide. As for every other Pokemon, use the same tactics as you did before. Her Lapras is packing a good amount of HP, and it has a decent moveset as well. So counter it accordingly. =============================================================================== =============================================================================== Trainer: Elite Four Bruno Pokemon: Steelix LV 65 Male Type: Steel/Ground Moveset: Earthquake, Iron Tail, Crunch, Rock Tomb Ability: Rock Head EXP: 2710 Machamp LV 68 Male Type: Fighting Moveset: Cross Chop, Earthquake, Rock Slide, Brick Break Ability: Guts EXP: 2810 Hitmonlee LV 65 Male Type: Fighting Moveset: Earthquake, Rock Slide, Foresight, Mega Kick Ability: Limber EXP: 1934 Hitmonchan LV 65 Male Type: Fighting Moveset: Sky Uppercut, Rock Slide, Counter, Mach Punch Ability: Keen Eye EXP: 1950 Steelix LV 66 Male Type: Steel/Ground Moveset: Earthquake, Crunch, Iron Tail, Dragonbreath Ability: Rock Head EXP: 2772 While Bruno's Pokemon have improved since the last time you fought him he still can be easily overcome by two different types of Pokemon at the least. Both of his Steelix Pokemon will go down fast after a strong Fire-type attack, while the rest of his three Pokemon will fall to Psychic type attacks. Beware of his Machamp, it's the strongest of his Pokemon and packs a strong punch. It's Cross Chop move can easily break any Pokemon in half, and it has a chance of hitting a critical hit, not cool. Prepare accordingly and as always, fight smart. Bruno will be out of the count once again. =============================================================================== =============================================================================== Trainer: Elite Four Agatha Pokemon: Gengar LV 66 Female Type: Ghost/Poison Moveset: Shadow Ball, Psychic, Confuse Ray, Hypnosis Ability: Levitate EXP: 2684 Crobat LV 66 Female Type: Poison/Flying Moveset: Sludge Bomb, Confuse Ray, Shadow Ball, Air Cutter Ability: Inner Focus EXP: 2882 Misdreavus LV 65 Female Type: Ghost Moveset: Shadow Ball, Psychic, Thunderbolt, Attract Ability: Levitate EXP: 2046 Arbok LV 68 Female Type: Poison Moveset: Sludge Bomb, Earthquake, Giga Drain, Double Team Ability: Intimidate EXP: 2142 Gengar LV 70 Female Type: Ghost/Poison Moveset: Sludge Bomb, Shadow Ball, Psychic, Thunderbolt Ability: Levitate EXP: 2850 Agatha's line-up has also been altered a tad, but it still has glaringly bad weak spots. A strong Psychic-type Pokemon can sweep most of her team, save the Misdreavus. Obliterate it with your own Ghost or Dark type attacks. If you by chance have a Mewtwo in your party this battle will be a breeze. =============================================================================== =============================================================================== Trainer: Elite Four Lance Pokemon: Gyarados LV 68 Male Type: Water/Flying Moveset: Hyper Beam, Earthquake, Dragon Dance, Thunder Wave Ability: Intimidate EXP: 3116 Aerodactyl LV 70 Male Type: Rock/Flying Moveset: Aerial Ace, Earthquake, Ancientpower, Hyper Beam Ability: Rock Head EXP: 3030 Dragonite LV 66 Male Type: Dragon/Flying Moveset: Hyper Beam, Dragon Claw, Earthquake, Flamethrower Ability: Inner Focus EXP: 3080 Dragonite LV 72 Male Type: Dragon/Flying Moveset: Outrage, Hyper Beam, Thunderbolt, Ice Beam Ability: Inner Focus EXP: 3362 Kingdra LV 66 Male Type: Dragon/Water Moveset: Hyper Beam, Surf, Ice Beam, Dragon Dance Ability: Swift Swim EXP: 2924 After you wipe out Gyarados with an Electric-type attack (As per the usual way to take it down) you'll be faced to face with an amped-up verison of his old team, albeit with some obvious changes. Kingdra is a new face for you perhaps. Take it down with Dragon-type attacks, that's the only thing that registers as super effective. Or you could toss out a strong Water/Ice type and battle a war of attrition, just be aware of Dragon Dance and Hyper Beam. =============================================================================== Trainer: Champion Rival Pokemon: Heracross LV 72 Male Type: Bug/Fighting Moveset: Megahorn, Rock Tomb, Earthquake, Counter Ability: Swarm EXP: 3084 Tyranitar LV 72 Male Type: Dark/Rock Moveset: Crunch, Earthquake, Aerial Ace, Thunderbolt Ability: Sand Stream EXP: 3362 Alakazam LV 73 Male Type: Psychic Moveset: Psychic, Shadow Ball, Calm Mind, Reflect Ability: Synchronize EXP: 2906 Charizard LV 75 Male Type: Fire/Flying Moveset: Fire Blast, Earthqake, Aerial Ace, Dragon Claw Ability: Blaze EXP: 3177 Blastoise LV 75 Type: Water Moveset: Hydro Pump, Rain Dance, Ice Beam, Earthquake Ability: Torrent EXP: -- Venusaur LV 75 Male Type: Grass/Poison Moveset: Solarbeam, Sunny Day, Sludge Bomb, Earthquake Ability: Overgrow EXP: -- Gyarados LV 73 Male Type: Water/Flying Moveset: Earthquake, Dragon Dance, Hyper Beam, Hydro Pump Ability: Intimidate EXP: 3344 Arcanine LV 73 Male Type: Fire Moveset: Overheat, Extremespeed, Iron Tail, Aerial Ace Ability: Intimidate EXP: 3330 Exeggutor LV 73 Male Type: Grass/Psychic Moveset: Giga Drain, Psychic, Sleep Powder, Light Screen Ability: Chlorophyll EXP: 3108 If you've never encountered a Heracross before, this is your first chance to do so! Unfortunately you won't feel very lucky after he starts ripping through your Pokemon with his awesome Megahorn attack. Though he is also a Fighting type Pokemon do not send a Psychic type out, unless you know for sure it can take it out in one hit, because otherwise you'll sorely regret that mistake. Tyranitar is an absolute beast of a Pokemon, quite possibly one of the strongest out there. Though in this battle he can be beaten without much hard work. He suffers a double weakness to Fighting type moves, so that's a good approach. Be aware though, this brute has Aerial Ace with him. So use a strong Fighting type move like Submission or Cross Chop. As for the rest of Rival's team, you've faced them many times before. I implore you to take a very basic approach to this battle and use type advantages to give you the edge in battle, but don't be afraid to take a risk or two. After all, this is the *final* final battle of this game. .------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | XXI. I still need to gather leftover info about the Rival battles and double check a few things. I'm also considering adding a few additional sections. July 15th 2007: 1.04 - Corrected some table errors as well as grammar errors, also added the wonderful ASCII you saw at the top of the FAQ. December 28th, 2007: 1.08 - Small update. Corrected a minor mistake in the second round of the Elite Four, Lance's Aerodactyl and his moveset. Credit goes to Paulo Chua for that. July 16th, 2009: 1.16 - Surprise update out of nowhere! I decided to update this guide to sort of commemorate my fourth year on GameFAQs. To recognize such an event I decided to update my most successful guide to date. As of this writing this guide has gotten around 50,000 hits. Now I know that compared to many guides that really isn't too much. But to me, the fact that this single piece of writing has reached so many people is astounding. So I thank the readers, for without you all of this would be completely useless. You can bet that I will be writing a Gym FAQ for Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver when they make their release stateside, whenever that is! I updated the ASCII at the start of the file and various movesets for the Rival fights. .------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | XXIII. Final Notes (Fin01) I encourage feedback of any kind, and I can be reached at the email listed above. In addition to feedback, if you have errors or missing content to report I'll look into it, and if everything checks out credit will be given to you in a future update. Thank you for viewing my FAQ. ===============================================================================
