CONCLUSION -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [1]. INTRODUCTION This guide lists the requirements for each of the game's endings. I have tested most of the things listed myself, either by playing my own game or by viewing other people's games by using GameShark Snapshots. Rather than merely stating as true things that are not yet confirmed, this guide tries to note whether something asserted is (1) An open question. (2) An educated guess, usually based on how the ending plays out. (3) A report by another fan. I am happy to make updates where corrections are needed. I want to make this guide as complete as possible. Q: How many endings are there? A: There are five distinct endings, but there are variations on each ending. Counting all variations, there are hundreds of endings. The four main endings are designated 'A', 'B', 'C', and 'D' on the final statistics screen. The so-called A+ ending is the 'A' ending plus an additional scene after the "The End" screen. Note that the A+ ending is designated as 'A' on the statistics screen, not as a separate A+. There is an additional "Game Over" ending with important variations. The "Game Over" ending is earned by losing to Shaher in the final battle. Q: Did you write the A+ Ending Guide? A: Yes. For vastly more information about the A+ ending than is provided here, see the A+ Ending Guide. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [2]. REQUIREMENTS Here is detailed what is necesary to earn each of the endings. A+ Complete all requirements for the 'A' ending, AND (1) Do not allow more than 5 (>5) of your characters die. (Yes, _FIVE_, not 10) (2) Alphonse must kill 50 enemies. Training does not count. (3) Complete the game through the "The End" screen in under 25 hours. Note: For extended details on my tests to determine the A+ ending requirements, including my use of a RAM viewer, please see my A+ Ending Guide. A (1) After battle 6, at Cape Urodela, you are given a plot choice. A: "I've no better ideas..." B: "It doesn't seem right." Choose choice 'A' to begin the 'A' plot path. (2) After battle 10, at Solea Beach, you are given a plot choice. A: "OK. Let's go together." B: "If you are so serious..." Choose choice 'A' to let Eleanor join your party. (3) Include Eleanor in the fourth and fifth battles at the Angel's Headstone, the battles against Shaher. (4) Eleanor must not end the final battle dead or petrified. It is acceptable for Eleanor to be poisoned, charmed, confused, or stunned. (5) Defeat Shaher. Variations: Three Forks (1) Depends on which of Cybil and Shiven are alive and not petrified. (2) Depends on which of Cybil and Shiven are alive and not petrified. (3) Depends on which of Elrik and Euphaire are alive and not petrified. B (1) After battle 6, at Cape Urodela, you are given a plot choice. A: "I've no better ideas..." B: "It doesn't seem right." Choose choice ‘B’ to begin the 'B' plot path. Notes: (a) This ending starts with Cybil addressing Shaher. I do not know what would happen if Cybil never joined your party of if Cybil died or was petrified in the battle with Shaher. UPDATE: I now know that Cybil does not join Alphonse's party if choice 'B' is chosen at Cape Urodela. (b) Cybil asks Alphonse to take care of her sister Eleanor. I am sure this is why Eleanor must remain alive. In the other endings, petrification is equivalent to death. I have not tested whether this ending is available if Eleanor ends the final battle petrified. Variations: Four Forks (1) Depends on which of Rictor and Orson are alive and not petrified. (2) Depends on whether Ivanna is alive and not petrified. (3) Depends on which of Rictor, Ivanna, and Orson are alive and not petrified. (4) Depends on which of Elrik and Euphaire are alive and not petrified. C (1) Do not include Eleanor in your party when you fight Shaher. Note: If you use Eleanor in the fourth battle at the Angel's Headstone, you will be stuck with her for the final battle against Shaher. (2) Eleanor must be alive. (3) Defeat Shaher Note: The ending features Eleanor. Therefore, I believe (4) Eleanor must have joined your party. In other words, when given the following choice after the battle at Solea Beach, you must choose choice 'A' A: "OK. Let's go together." B: "If you are so serious..." (5) Eleanor must not have been dismissed from your party. Variations: None D (1) Include Eleanor in the fourth and fifth battles at the Angel's Headstone. The characters you use in the fourth battle carry over to the battle against Shaher. (2) Eleanor must either be dead or petrified at the end of the battle. Being stunned, confused, poisoned, or charmed does not satisfy this requirement. Note: Since this is the only ending that does not require Eleanor to be alive, my guess is that it is the only ending available to you if you choose choice 'B' when presented with this choice at Solea Beach: A: "OK. Let's go together." B: "If you are so serious..." This choice at Solea Beach is not the same thing as the choice at Cape Urodela. Variations: One Fork (1) Depends on which choice was chosen after battle six at Cape Urodela. Game Over (1) Which initial scene you get here depends on this choice: (a) BREAK Shaher's barrier with Longicolnis; OR (b) Do NOT BREAK Shaher's barrier with Longicolnis. (2) Lose to Shaher. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [3]. ENDING TRANSCRIPTS Here are transcripts of each ending and its variations. CONVENTIONS: Here is an explanation of the punctuation I used in my transcripts. 80 hyphens: Separates the different endings. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 40 hyphens: Separates the different branches of a forked ending. ---------------------------------------- 10 hyphens: Separates different scenes in an ending. ---------- Square brackets: Used to provide a description of the action or other things that are not part of the game's text. The exception is in the credits, where the line "[LOCALIZATION]" is actually a part of the credits. [ ] Angle brackets: Used to signal the beginning, end, or other information about a branched ending. < > Colons: Colons used after character names are not present in the game text. Here colons are used to set character names apart from spoken text. : "FORK": A fork is a point at which different things happen in the ending depending on choices made earlier. This is like a "fork in the road." "BRANCH": A branch is one of the paths the ending takes from a FORK. Time Order: In almost every case, I provide scene descriptions before stating the text. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ENDING A+ Notes This section contains a transcript only of the special scene after the "The End" screen of ENDING A. ENDING A+ [Music: The music has an ominous feel for several seconds.] [Scene: Pictured are homes or shops, a town by a mountainside. It is snowing. The camera pans up the mountain and stops at the top.] [Music: When the camera start panning up the mountain the music changes to a more urgent feel, one of action and foreshadowing a deed of import.] [At the top of the mountain, looking at the town is Alphonse (renamed Lans Tartare by the Pope). Alphonse is older with long blue hair. He is wearing a knight’s armor and sitting atop an armored horse.] [A ninja approaches Alphonse. From the ninja’s headshot, he appears to be an ordinary ninja clad in gray. His name is Shadow.] Shadow: “Everything’s ready. We’ll soon set fire to the town.” [From Alphonse’s headshot: Alphonse has matured. He wears a patch over his right eye.] One-Eyed Knight: “That priest... Is he here?” Shadow: “Yes, we have verified his presence.” One-Eyed Knight: “It doesn’t matter how... Capture him without arousing suspicion.” [Shadow, the ninja walks away from Alphonse.] [Alphonse continues to watch the town.] [Fade to black.] [The game auto-saves.] -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ENDING A Notes This transcript includes the A+ scene as a branch of the final fork. ENDING A [The ending starts when Shaher receives a fatal blow.] [The Sacred Demon, Shaher in his giant form fades to purple and flashes three times.] [Shaher covers himself with his arm and his wing and then emits purple light throughout the screen.] [Shaher flashes white two times. Then his body becomes deformed and fades.] [Shaher transforms from a giant demon to an angel the size of an ordinary person. After he transforms, he is collapsed flat on his front.] [When Shaher regains consciousness, he crouches into a defeated posture.] [Shaher is positioned on the map toward the far corner.] [Alphonse stands two squares in front of Shaher and faces him.] [Of the remaining characters two characters stand several squares behind Alphonse, four characters form a line several squares to Shaher's left side, and Eleanor stands one square closer to Shaher than those four characters.] Shaher: "...God, do you abandon me again...? Is my voice to be silenced forever...? During the Ogre Battle, I fought for you willingly." Alphonse: "You have no home to return to anymore. For servants of darkness, death means disappearance, banishment to where God's love doesn't reach. There's no possibility of salvation. So, which do you choose, to live eternally within the seal, or to vanish completely?" Shaher: "If I have to return to the cold darkness... I shall take this world with me and..." [Shaher wraps his wings around himself.] [Eleanor moves to stand between Alphonse and Shaher. Eleanor stands right in front of Alphonse and two squares from Shaher.] Eleanor: "No! Not Alphonse!" [Shaher unfurls his wings.] Shaher: "What are you doing?" Eleanor: "...I can sense your feelings. You've been lonley, haven't you? Lonely...for so long... ...imprisoned here. I won't let you die alone." Shaher: "You do not have the slightest idea... How dare you mock me..." Eleanor: "I know your feelings... You love God. Your love for him has not changed. You still long to be in his glorious presence." [Shaher collapses. He is standing but not straight.] Shaher: "...While God showed his love for humans, he barely acknowledged my existence. He ordered me to fight for the sake of humans... O God...I loved you so much...Why did you not love me in return?" Eleanor: "It's not that you hated humans. You just wanted God to notice you. You fell from heaven and were sealed here, but you still longed for God's forgiveness. A fallen angel is an enemy of God, but God sealed you before you had completely fallen. That was all that he could do for you... Why haven't you realized it? ...God loves you, too." [Shaher emits beams of blue light.] Shaher: "Impossible... Are you suggesting that I am the one who was ignorant of God's intentions!? Aah...Everything is blurry. What is happening to me? Am I dying...? Will I vanish forever? Even my memories are fading..." [Shaher emits beams of blue light.] [Eleanor walks to Shaher and stops right in front of him.] Eleanor: "...It's alright... I'll stay with you. Use my body to escape your own cruel fate, but please, ...don't take Alphonse." Alphonse: "Eleanor... What are you saying!?" Eleanor: "Alphonse, don't you realize...? I've been lonely and scared my whole life. I can feel it... We may be together now, but you'll go off on your own when adventure calls. I didn't want to think about losing you, so I tried to be helpful. I wanted to be needed. I wanted to protect you..." [Alphonse extends his right hand toward Eleanor.] Alphonse: "Eleanor...Wait! Don't go!!!" Eleanor: "Shaher...Please accept me. Let's return to the place where you once were... The kingdom of light..." [Shaher emits beams of blue light.] [Shaher emits white concentric circles of energy.] [Alphonse's hair is blown back by the energy.] [Eleanor and Shaher ascend.] ---------- [Black text on a white screen.] I'm sorry, Alphonse. I couldn't keep my promise... [White text on a black screen.] That night, many inhabitants of the island saw an angel atop the Vurtar Mountains, shining in silver and ascending into the clouds. ---------- [Alphonse is in a bed next to a window. Through the window, the blue of the sea can be seen. This is the beach of Solea.] Alphonse: "Eleanor..." They plan on arresting you for killing your commander and seizing control of strongholds on this island." Alphonse: "I see..." Priest in Training: "A ship to Lodis leaves from Sotavento in 5 days. Please hurry..." [The Priest in Training leaves Alphonse alone on the beach.] ---------- [Knights and soldiers overrun Scabellum.] ---------- <---------- For the next scene, the ending is forked (FORK A) with four branches (A1, A2, A3, and A4). Also, the North-South Trade Alliance has reported an economic recovery." Ivanna: "Thankfully, the Duke of Felis decided not to send his troops, but will Lodis approve self-governance? ...I certainly hope so." Knight: "These will be trying times for you...and for Ovis." Ivanna: "True, but I share the love Father had for this island. Let's protect it... and the lives of those who live here." ---------- <---------- For the next scene, the ending is forked (FORK C) with four branches (C1, C2, C3, and C4). You don't know when or where a human ship might appear. Please return to the sanctuary. We'll guard this area." Aerial: "What are you saying? I have a responsibility to protect you all. Ha!...And I am more reliable than you." Mermaid Girl: "Aerial..." Aerial: "I know now that there are humans we can trust. Whether someone's trustworthy or not depends on the individual, not on race. There must be a way that we can get along. Doubt will lead to nothing. It'll take time, but from now on I'll confide in them." Aerial: "It's getting windy. The stormy season is approaching." [Two seagulls fly overhead and out to sea.] ---------- [Pictured is a throne room in the Pope's palace. The throne is shrouded in red fabric so that the Pope cannot be seen. The throne area is flanked by two high priests. Alphonse kneels on a red carpet leading to the throne.] High Priest: "The Pope would like to know your name." Alphonse: "My name is Alphonse... Alphonse Tartare." High Priest: "Raise your head. I share with you the Pope's blessing. In honor of your noble deeds, I bestow on you the name Lans, and welcome you into the service of the Pope. Henceforth, you shall be known as Lans Tartare." Alphonse: "I am honored." ---------- [White text with the Pope's throne room as a background.] With Naris dead, Lodis neither punished the Batraal Family nor the people of Rananculus, since it had been his personal greed and ambitio which had led to much of the difficulty. Ovis, the island which was home ot the Sacred Spear, was put under Galius's control. Meanwhile, because the Duke of Felis had hidden his knowledge of the spear from Galius, Felis's land was placed under the supervision of Lodis, and the Duke lost much of his standing. [White text on a black background.] Such is the account of the conflict that erupted in Ovis in the year 232, and of the Sacred Spear, Longicolnis. Little is said of the young knight who suppressed it. He became known as Lans Tartare, and not until later, left his mark on the history of Zeteginia. ---------- [The background is black. Pictured is a table centered in the screen and filling most of it. The table is covered with books and scrolls. A thatched shadow pattern is cast across the table, indicating a window through which the scene is lit. At first, little light enters, so the scene is displayed in black-and-white. As increasingly more light enters, the scene shifts to full color.] [The camera pans left so that the table is shifted to fill the right side of the screen only. This serves as the background for the statistics screen.] [From top to bottom is displayed the following.] ~EndResults~ Ending A [Note: the result will display as ending A even if you earned the so-called A+ ending.] Fallen :[The number of your characters that died.] Dismissed: [The number of characters you dismissed from your team.] Vanquished: [The number of enemies killed by your team.] Class%: [A graph indicating the percentage of available classes acquired.] Item%: [A graph indicating the percentage of available items acquired.] Emblem%: [A graph indicating the percentage of available emblems acquired.] Total Time: [number of hours played] h [number of minutes played] m ---------- [Large white letters in script. The text appears on the screen to the left of the table.] The End ---------- <---------- For the next scene, the ending is forked (FORK D) with two branches (D1 and D2). The ending proceeds along only one branch depending on whether the requirments for the A+ ending were met. After the fork concludes the branches reunite. D1: The requirements for the A+ ending were met, namely: (1) Fulfill the requirements for the A ending. (2) Do not allow more than 5 characters to die. (3) Alphonse must have killed at least 50 enemies. (4) The game must be finished to this fork in under 25 hours. D2: Any of the requirments for the A+ ending were not met. ----------> ---------- [Music: The music has an ominous feel for several seconds.] [Scene: Pictured are homes or shops, a town by a mountainside. The scene is supposed to show an older, matured Alphonse (now Lans Tartare) as he appears at the beginning of Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together.] ---------------------------------------- ---------- [The game auto-saves.] -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ENDING B [The ending starts when Shaher receives a fatal blow.] [The Sacred Demon, Shaher in his giant form fades to purple and flashes three times.] [Shaher covers himself with his arm and his wing and then emits purple light throughout the screen.] [Shaher flashes white two times. Then his body becomes deformed and fades.] [Shaher transforms from a giant demon to an angel the size of an ordinary person. For servants of darkness, death means disappearance, banishment to where God's love doesn't reach. There's no possibility of salvation. So, which do you choose, to live eternally within the seal, or to vanish completely?" Shaher: "If I have to return to the cold darkness... I shall take this world with me and..." [Shaher wraps his wings around himself.] [Cybil materializes on the left side of the map.] Cybil: "You say you're close to God, but you're afraid of darkness? How sad." [Shaher assumes an upright posture and lets his wings fall naturally.] Alphonse: "Cybil...!" Cybil: "Good... I'm glad you're alright." [Shaher resumes his defeated posture.] Cybil: "Shaher...I know what you're thinking. Why won't you admit it? You still love God. Your love for him has not changed. You still long to be in his glorious presence." Shaher: "...While God showed his love for humans, he barely acknowledge my existence. He ordered me to fight for the sake of humans... O God...I loved you so much...Why did you not love me in return?" [Cybil moves to stand between Alphonse and Shaher. Cybil stands right in front of Alphonse and two squares from Shaher.] Cybil: "It's not that you hated humans. You just wanted God to notice you. You sinned and were sealed here, but you still longed for God's forgiveness. A fallen angel is an enemy of God, but God sealed you before you had completely fallen. That was all he could do for you... His love is unconditional. You shouldn't have doubted him." [Shaher emits beams of blue light.] Shaher: "Silence! Do not try to confuse me! If God is the supreme being to whom I must dedicate my life, then he should act accordingly! Aah...Everything is blurry. What is happening to me? Am I dying...? Will I vanish forever? Even my memories are fading...I shall not allow it... I shall not go alone!" [Shaher emits beams of blue light.] [Cybil approaches Shaher and extends her right hand to him.] Cybil: "I won't let you take Alphonse, even if it costs me my life." Alphonse: "Cybil, don't! Don't do anything foolish!!!" [Cybil turns to face Alphonse.] Cybil: "Alphonse, you taught me to follow my heart. [Cybil faces Shaher.] It's not such a bad thing to risk my life for someone like you. It's taken a lot of energy to make it this far, but don't underestimate me. Taking the life of a fallen angel shouldn't be too difficult!" Alphonse: "Nooo! Don't do it!!!" Cybil: "Your fate is to die here with me, Shaher. You were wrong to wish for a more equal relationship with God. Just give up on your wish. Besides...You won't be lonely if I am with you." [Shaher emits beams of blue light followed by concentric circles of energy.] [Alphonse extends his right hand to Cybil, but the energy pushes him back one square. AFTER THE ENDING Here are a few things worth noting that are available after beating the game. [4.1]. Continue Playing as Normal Once you finish the game, the game auto-saves. You will be able to continue playing the game from your last save before your attack on the Angel's Headstone. [4.2]. Results of the Auto-save The file last saved before entering the Angel's Headstone will have up to two enhancements. If the 'A+', 'A', 'B', 'C', or 'D' was earned, Alphonse will have Relix's ending, and the inventory will include Anbicion, the 68 power version. If the Game Over ending was earned, Alphonse will have The Cycle of Life Emblem. It should be a simple matter to fight Shaher again and get the other prize. Note: The version of Anbicion wielded by Shaher is the 90 power version. That version can be acquired only with a cheat device. [4.3]. Load Anbicion, Relix's Emblem, and The Cycle of Life Emblem into a new game. This is also known as the Ending/Anbicion trick. Naturally, with 68 power, the Anbicion will easily dispatch most enemies early in the game. I will not describe exactly how to perform the trick here because another guide already does an excellent job of that. However, I will state a few corrections. View this guide on the Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis page of http://www.gamefaqs.com : Title: Secrets FAQ Author: Layoneil Perform a text search for 2) What's the Ending/Anbicion trick? Errors in that guide: (1) The Anbicion and Relix's Emblem are available upon acquiring endings 'A', 'B', 'C', or 'D', not 'A', 'B', or 'C' only. (2) The Cycle of Life Emblem is available upon acquiring the Game Over ending only, not ending 'D'. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [5]. TRICKS Here are some tricks to try. 1. Alphonse and Shaher defeated simultaneously. Technique: In the final battle against Shaher, perform an attack that kills Shaher and Alphonse at the same time. Great candidates are spells and spears. Result: This trick will result in the Game Over ending. Shaher vanishes as a normal enemy rather than undergoing the transformation seen in one of the other endings. Alphonse collapses into the defeated position. Then, the Game Over ending proceeds. Notes: The result is the same whether Shaher is killed first or Alphonse is killed first. If you want to try to kill Shaher first, you will need to use a spell effect. Since Shaher never moves, Shaher will always be the second target of a spear attack. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [6].
