Copyright ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- X X X 1. Introduction X X X ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to the guide and walkthrough for Babe and Friends on the Game Boy Color! Anyone who has watched at least either one of the Babe movies from the 90's would be quite familiar with the title of the game. This game's theme is based off both Babe movies. Just like in the movies, Babe the Pig is the master of herding sheep. But unlike the main plot of the movies, your focus is on one lone sheep and help navigate both her and Babe back home. At times you will need to grab a key to be able to proceed to the next puzzle. Other than that, the whole game is straightforward and linear. There are six maps (providing seven level) and 43 puzzles in total. I have included as much detail as I know about and of this game. There are a couple of details I haven't been able to find: 1. The actual name of the dog (the one with black patch around the eye) and the monkey. 2. There's a "dark world" glitch that can be executed on Level 1, Puzzle 4. I haven't been able to successfully execute it and I don't know what benefits it exactly provides. What I do know is the screen becomes quite dark while you're playing the game (but is that really a benefit?). All of the solutions in the walkthrough have been tested multiple times, but if you find any issues within this guide or have a complaint, comment, or compliment, feel free to send me a message or an e-mail! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- X X X 2. Babe and Friends [2] X X X ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This game is called "Babe and Friends", so here are all of the characters in the game. Babe the Pig: The pig and protagonist you control in the game. He can push and throw light obstacles with his snout. Also, he can "bark" which makes the sheep move in the direction he faces while barking. Sheep: The lonely female sheep Babe must bark at all game long. She doesn't know how to get back home, so she fully relies on Babe. Ferdinand the Goose: The goose you see throughout the game. He gives you tips, hints, and cheers for you. Flealick the Dog: The dog in the wheelchair you see throughout the game. He also gives you tips, hints, and cheers for you. Dog: The dog with a black patch around the eye. He's the first friend you encounter. He also gives you tips, hints, and cheers for you. Monkey: The monkey you see throughout the game. Just like the other characters, he gives you tips, hints, and cheers for you. Mrs. Esme Hoggett: Babe's owner. She only appears in Level 6 - Mansion. Normally she is inaccessible to interact with. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- X X X 3. In-game Controls [3] X X X ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Directional Up: Move Babe up. Also used to push pushable object and to interact with friends and readable objects. Directional Left: Move Babe left. Also used to push pushable object and to interact with friends and readable objects. Directional Down: Move Babe down. Also used to push pushable object and to interact with friends and readable objects. Directional Right: Move Babe right. Also used to push pushable object and to interact with friends and readable objects. A: Throw. Stand next to a pushable object, hold B, and press the directional pad toward the object. B: Bark. Only affects the sheep and arrow blocks. Start: Pause the game. Select: Have options to choose from: Restart Puzzle, Cancel, and Quit. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- X X X 4. Puzzle Solutions [4] X X X ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In total there are seven levels in the game. The number of puzzles in each level will vary, but your goal will always be the same: get both Babe and the sheep by the waving flags safely. To complete some puzzles, you will need to grab a key. All of the puzzles in this game can require no luck (that is, unless if your skill is lacking and you were lucky that the boulder just missed hitting your dear sheep) and can require pure skill to complete. Interestingly, often even in puzzle games at least little luck is put somewhere in the game in order to win. This makes this game a little rare in this aspect. Instructions are labeled in order with "1.", "2.", "3.", and so forth. If you make a mistake with an instruction and are not able to fix the mistake, you can try again from the beginning of the puzzle. To do this, press Select and choose "Restart Puzzle". For some puzzles there may be multiple solutions possible. There are unintended solutions and intended solutions. The unintended solutions are not what was normally planned to be solution of the puzzle by the creators. The intended solutions are the solutions the creators prepared. To avoid repeating a lot, here are some things you can assume: 1. Barking at the sheep. "Bark up": Go to the sheep and bark up. "Bark down": Go to the sheep and bark down. "Bark left": Go to the sheep and bark left. "Bark right": Go to the sheep and bark right. If it says "bark right, down, and left" then go to the sheep, bark right, follow the sheep (and keep on following her), bark down, keep on following her, and finally bark left. Then follow the next step if needed. 2. After you have finished the last step, always go to the waving flag(s) where the sheep should be at. 3. When pushing objects, you will see up/right/left/down x1/x2/x3/x4/x5/.... For example, if you see "Push the bale of hay left x2.", that means you should push the bale of hay left twice. If "...up x5", then it means up five times. The standard format for each level is: Puzzle # (PASSWORD) 1. Step #1 2. Step #2 3. Step #3 Friend: What Babe's friend says when you interact with him/her in the puzzle. Readable Object: What the object says when you bump into it in the puzzle. ___________________________________ / \ ===================== a. Move down and all the way left to the box. 10. Push the box right x3. 11. Go right, down (be careful of the machine!), left, and up to the box. 12. Push the box up x1, then right x4. 13. Move back up to the sheep. 14. Bark down, left, down, left, up (back up the ladder), up, right, and lastly down. Flealick: You'll have to have your wits about you to complete this puzzle, Babe. Signpost: This hospital is on three levels. ___________________________ / \ ========================= f. Level 6 - Mansion [4f] ========================= \___________________________/ This is one frantic mansion with more of those self-moving vacuums and other machines... Puzzle 1 (N6W) 1. Move right to the box. 2. Push the box left x1, down x2, left x5, up x2, and right x1. 3. Bark right, then down. 4. Follow the sheep down into the next room and down the stairs. Go right until you see a pushable arrow. There are a few possible solutions you can do now: SOLUTION #1 5. Push the arrow right x1. 6. Bark x3 at the arrow to have it face down. 7. If the sheep has stopped, bark right. Bark right, right again, and finally up. SOLUTION #2 5. Push the arrow right x2, then up x2. 6. Bark x3 at the arrow to have it face right. 7. If the sheep stopped inside Babe, push the arrow up x1 and bark x3 at the arrow again. If she stopped before, just bark at her in the direction she was moving. 8. Bark up, right, and then up. SOLUTION #3 5. Stand below or near below the table in path of the sheep. The sheep must stop below the table. 6. Push the arrow up x1 and right x3. 7. Bark up to have the sheep go to the table. Bark right. 8. Walk right to stop the sheep from moving. 9. Bark x3 at the arrow to have it point up. 10. Bark right, right again, and lastly up. Dog: You are one special sheep-pig, Babe. Signpost 1: Think, Babe. Some objects can be used in more than one way. Signpost 2: You can guide the sheep, by making it move over the arrow block. You can turn the block by barking at it, Babe. Puzzle 2 (LP4) 1. Once you can begin to move, wait three seconds for the vacuum to move out of the way. Bark up. 2. Follow the sheep up and go right. 3. Push the box up x1 into the hole. 4. Bark right and down. 5. Follow the sheep into the next room. NOTE: Now time for the coolest part of the game. In the center you will see up, right, down, and left arrows, called guide blocks. These blocks will move the sheep if stepped on. This can actually be used anytime while you're in the level as long as you can get to it. You will need to quickly step on an arrow and then step off for the sheep to do walk x1. If you keep standing on the arrow, the sheep will just keep walking. 6. Step on right x1 then immediately move to the center between the guide blocks. 7. Now just step on and quickly step off the blocks in this order: right x2, down x2, right x3, down x3, left x1, down x2, and finally right x5. Ferdinand: Babe, you can guide the sheep by standing on the correct guide block. Signpost: You are now in the Ballroom. Puzzle 3 (GWR) As said in the previous puzzle, the guide blocks can be used anytime throughout the level. Here there are three solutions to this puzzle: the unintended solution using the sheep guide blocks, the unintended solution by solving using half of what's given to you and the intended solution using everything given. Unintended solution with guide blocks: 1. Walk left to go to the guide blocks. 2. Right x1, down x5, right x5, up x6, right x2, down x1, right x7, up x1, right x3, and down x10. If you happen to stand back in the middle again, just leave going right. Now to get the key. 3. Move all the way right, down, right, and then up into the red floored room. Next, go right into the blue floored room. Go up and get the key. Then go down, all the way right, and all the way down. Unintended solution no guide blocks: 1. Bark right. 2. Go down. 3. Push the box down x1, and right x8 into the hole. 4. Push the other box left x6, down x1, and then right x12 into the other hole. 5. Move left and up back to the sheep. 6. Bark down, then right. 7. Go right and check if the sheep stopped anywhere before box-in-hole. If the sheep did stop, bark right. 8. Move up into the red floored room, and then right into the blue floored room. Go up and get the key. Then go down, all the way right, and down again to the sheep. 9. Bark down. Intended solution: 1. Bark right. 2. Go down. 3. Push the box down x1. 4. Go right. 5. Push the other box left x1. 6. Go left and up back to the sheep. 7. Bark down, right, and up. 8. Go back left to the crate. 9. Push the crate right x8 into the hole. 10. Push the other box right x6. 11. Move left and up into the red floored room, and then right into the blue floored room. Be careful of going around the floor pad! Go up and get the key. Go down to the where the opened door is. 12. Push the box down x1, then right x1 into the other hole. 13. Move left and up back into the red-floored room. 14. Bark right, left, down, right, and lastly down. Flealick: Think, Babe. You can do it, Babe! Puzzle 4 (BMR) 1. Bark down. 2. Move left and all the way down to the other side of the room. Head left into the next room. 3. Push the arrow right x2. 4. Go right and then up passing by the two vases to the box. 5. Push the box up x2 into the hole. 6. Go back up and left to the sheep. 7. Bark down x1. Immediately move down to above the hole near the boulder. You will stop the sheep in her tracks. When it's safe, bark left x1. Finally, bark down x1. Monkey: You might find an arrow on a block. This can be moved and used to guide the sheep. Babe can also turn the arrow by barking at it. Signpost 1 & 2: Think, Babe. Some objects can be used in more than one way. Puzzle 5 (VR1) 1. Go left, down the stairs, and right to the box. 2. Push the box left x4 and down x5 onto the left floor arrows. 3. Move back up to the sheep. 4. Bark left. 5. Head down the stairs again, go left, and down near the corner. 6. Wait for the sheep to arrive and stop. Bark right x1, then right x1 again. 7. Move all the way right. You'll see a key and also see Mrs. Esme Hoggett. Grab the key and go right. Happy en.... or you would like to think that. On to level 7! Dog: Go Babe! Mrs. Esme Hoggett: This way to the Farmhouse. Farmer Hoggett. ___________________________________ / \ ===================== g. Level 7 - Forest (Part 2) [4g] ===================== \___________________________________/ Back in the forest you are. Forget the arrow signs this time! You are on your own! Puzzle 1 (TYQ) Where's the sheep!? Well, nevermind her for now. She'll come last. 1. Immediately go down into the water and swim left. 2. Ready for the long walk? a. Move a little left and then up to near the rock. b. Go left passing by the small pond and stop at the hole. c. Go down a little and on the left there will be an opening between two trees. d. Go left between the trees and around the wooden posts. e. Now a line of tree stumps should be on the right side of Babe. Follow them by going down, around the two trees, all the way right, all the way down, and then right. f. You will then see a big field and a rolling boulder. Head right a little more to near the house, go down to another line of tree stumps, move right, and then up to find another boulder rolling. g. Continue to go up to an area with many stumps and posts. h. In the area, first go right and then up. There's the sheep! 3. Just bark right. Dog: You will have to go a long way to do this puzzle, Babe. Puzzle 2 (19W) 1. Go up and keep swimming up to the bridge. Head left to find a bale of hay. 2. Push the bale of hay right x10, down x2, right x2, and down x7 into the water. 3. Push the other bale of hay that's nearby left x2 and down x4 also into the water. 4. Move down across the water and to the third bale of hay. 5. Push this bale of hay up x2, right x2, and then up x2 also into the water. Now there should be three bales of hay lined up to be a bridge. 6. Go right and down to get the key. Move left and then down to the grey wall. Move left following the wall, up, and then right to the trampoline. 7. Push the trampoline down x2, left x4, up x1, right x1, down x1. 8. Head up and around the tree to the sheep. 9. Bark down, right, and lastly up (and up again if she stops). Ferdinand: You are getting close to home, Babe. Puzzle 3 (5RZ) At last! The final puzzle! 1. Bark right and down. 2. Go up and left to the bale of hay. There are two solutions to this puzzle: the unintended solution and intended solution. Unintended solution: 3. Push the bale of hay right x3, up x6, and then right x3 against the wall near the stairs. 4. Go all the way down to where the sheep is and then go right to the bale of hay. 5. Push the bale of hay left x2, down x4, and right x1. 6. Bark right, then up. 7. Follow the sheep all the way up and stand next to the hole on the right. Wait for the sheep to approach and stop. 8. Bark up, right, and up. Intended solution: 3. Push the bale of hay down x1 and right x4 into the hole. 4. Go up to the log. 5. Push the log left x3. 6. Go all the way down to where the sheep is and then go right to the bale of hay. 7. Push the bale of hay left x2, down x4, and then right x1. 8. Bark right and up. 9. Follow the sheep all the way up and wait for her to stop at the log. 10. Push the log left x3, up x2, and right x7. 11. Bark right, up, right, and lastly up. 9/12. Follow the sheep up and head all the way right. You'll see a trampoline. 10/13. Move the trampoline down x2. 11/14. Go back left to the sheep. 12/15. Bark right. 13/16. Now to get the key. Swim all the way up and all the way left. Touch the key and head all the way right and down to the opening on the right. FINALLY, pat yourself on the back. Babe made it back home. And Mr. and Mrs. Hoggett have a rolling boulder in front of their house now!? Well, nevertheless... THE END! Flealick: This is the final puzzle, Babe. Come on. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- X X X 5. Other Notes [5] X X X ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This game has numerous indications that later in development it was rushed to be published and distributed. Here are some I've found: -In some levels there are incomplete parts on the map that clearly looked like a work in progress. Most are out of sight but in level 2, 5, and 6 you can see a small part of the mess the developers left. Normally you would not think about it since the mess is far out of the way, as can be especially said in the forest on to upper right. -The introduction scene of each level feels incomplete as it really doesn't serve much of any purpose in the game. -Mrs. Esme Hoggett has been put in the game but is unreachable to talk to. You can walk and talk to her by using these GameShark codes: 011A1BCC & 01061CCC. When you go talk to her, the monkey in big will appear, indicating that Mrs. Hoggett in big was never completed. -In level 5, puzzle 7, going up the middle ladder on the ground floor brings you below the ladder on the top floor. Going down the middle ladder on the top floor will bring you not near a ladder on the ground floor. -The color of all the flags in the level are always the same even when the color switches. The keys also always become the same color as the flags. -There are some incorrect tile placements on maps. A simple example is level 1, puzzle 9, the rock near the dog. The largest example is level 7, puzzle 1 on the very left of the map. Here there are five rocks (which are spread out a little) that look incorrect on the bottom left of them. The game also has numerous bugs. Many don't have a significant impact in playing the game. You might not even notice most of them if you only play through the game once. Here are some I've found: -If you enter a password to be later in a level, you may be able to go back and grab another key that's supposed to be for another puzzle. Level 1, Puzzle 9 is a good example of this. If you enter a password to go to this puzzle, you are free to go back to puzzle 4 or 8 and grab the key from either of them instead of the key you're supposed to grab in puzzle 9. -If you go ahead to other puzzles, grab the key needed for that puzzle, and then go back and complete the puzzle you're originally on, the key will still be gone. This will make it impossible to complete the puzzle the key is for (unless if you happen to find another key for another puzzle lying around). You will need to restart the puzzle in order for the key to reappear. -If you grab a key and a moving object collides with the key that's flying up, the moving object will bump into the key and stop. -If Babe stands in front of the "people mover" and the sheep is on the "people mover" heading toward Babe, the sheep will be on the same space as Babe. Similarly, if Babe is standing in front of the floor arrow and the sheep walks on that tile, she will walk through Babe. -The sheep can jump over walls in a building using the trampoline. -The sheep can be barked down or even up a vertical cliff. These cliffs are divided by a dark vertical line in level 1 and 7. -The sheep will stop before crossing over something in a hole or water if too far outside the screen. -The sheep will fall into the hole or water if she's walking on something that's covering the hole or acting like a bridge for the water while you're interacting with a character or readable object. -If the sheep passes by the flag but you happen to get the sheep to go up or down a ladder to warp to another part of the map, you will not be able to complete the puzzle even if you walk near the flag. This can be done on level 4, puzzle 1 as an example. -In level 5, puzzle 7, for the middle ladder on the ground floor, you can walk through the wall on the opposite side to climb up. -In level 3, you can walk on some of the glass doors. You can even walk on one of the buildings on the bottom left of the map. -If you push an object in the water and push another object on top of the one in the water then move far away from them, the object on top will disappear. Level 4, puzzle 4 is an easy example of this. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- X X X 6.
