I have thereby changed information in Copyright Information and Guide Usage Rules. Also, there have been minor grammar alterations throughout the guide, along with a correction in the Quick Find shortcut for Chapter 1. ========================================================== January 3, 2004 -- Version 6.0 ========================================================== Welcome to another new year, ladies and gentlemen. Here's what I've done: ALTERATIONS - Another new year, another change to the Copyright Information section that involves the year, among other things. - Changes have been made to the Author Contact section. ========================================================== October 4, 2003 -- Version 5.0 ========================================================== Well, I made a couple of quick revisions to this guide. ALTERATIONS - I suppose this isn't too important, but I changed the format of the guide, so it is now done on WordPad instead of Word. - Changes have been made to the Copyright Information section. ========================================================== July 4, 2003 -- Version 4.0 ========================================================== Happy "Fourth" everybody. That can mean to celebrate the Fourth of July and the fourth version of this guide. Go figure. I did a few updates to this guide in order to make the information more precise. ALTERATIONS - With a new year, "Copyright Information" had to be slightly tweaked. - Included the fact that hedgehogs are insectivores, not rodents, in "Characters" - Slightly updated Tails' information in "Characters" - Reformatted the "Controls" section - Slight tweaking of grammar in "Zone Descriptions" - A few changes in the "Bosses" section regarding boss names - Included more credits in the "Acknowledgments" section ========================================================== November 29, 2002 -- Version 3.0 ========================================================== Several additions and changes in this update! To make this more informative of an FAQ, I have done the following: ADDED SECTIONS RENAMED SECTIONS - "Codes, Cheats, Glitches, and - "Moves" ---> "Controls" Oddities" - "Multiplayer Mode" ---> "2P Mode" - "Guide Usage Rules" - "What about 'Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 2'?" ALTERATIONS OTHER NEW STUFF - More grammar changes - Quick-Find Reference Added - Deletion of unnecessary borders =========================================================== November 16, 2002 -- Version 2.0 =========================================================== As CJayC has said time and time again, there truly can never be a Final Version of the guide. Therefore, I have made this addition. This incarnation includes the following additions/changes: ALTERED SECTIONS - Minor tweaks of grammar throughout =========================================================== November 22, 2001 -- Version Final =========================================================== Hey all! It's the first version and the last all in one! Therefore, there's nothing to see here. Moving right along... =============================================================================== [KS2] CHAPTER 03: What about "Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 2"? [KS2] =============================================================================== This game, "Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 2", can be attained to using the lock-on cartridge technology of "Sonic & Knuckles" with the "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" cartridge. The gameplay is almost exactly similar to that of the original sequel, but Knuckles' gliding ability will allow him to enter new areas of zones. Furthermore, boss battles will be slightly more difficult, for Knuckles cannot jump as high as Sonic or Tails. Codes for "KS2" will be in Chapter 12. =============================================================================== [CHR] CHAPTER 04: Characters [CHR] =============================================================================== =========================================================== SONIC THE HEDGEHOG =========================================================== Born and raised on South Island (where Sonic 1 took place), a speed demon, and a guy with a major chili dog obsession, Sonic the Hedgehog has evolved into one of the most loved video game mascots of our time. When one mentions "Sega", one can't help but think of the blue, spiky-hair insectivore. =========================================================== MILES "TAILS" PROWER - THE TWO-TAILED FOX =========================================================== I don't know, nor want to know, why Sonic, an ultra-cool dude, has a best friend in a whiny, premature, ten-year-old fox. Sounds a little suspicious to me... Anyway, this kid is pretty cool, even though he can't fly yet and is no different from Sonic in terms of controls. Sigh... well, at least there's Sonic 3 to look forward to. ========================================================== DR. IVO ROBOTNIK ========================================================== Also known as Dr. Eggman, Robotnik is the definition of evil dudes who need to hit a Stairmaster. The red suit and fiery mustache define this guy, but nothing seems more prominent than the Egg-O-Matic, his transport device used to hover throughout the universe. =========================================================== MOBIUS INHABITANTS =========================================================== Instead of the standard "Damsel-in-Distress" theme found in many games in this genre (*cough* Mario *cough*), Sonic must rescue the residents of this island. Either the gravity level must be really high or there's a lack of nutrition among the locals, but they are all really short. =============================================================================== [ITM] CHAPTER 05: Items [ITM] =============================================================================== ========================================================== ITEM(S) || USE(S) ========================================================== | Power Rings || These are basically what | | || your life depends on. | | || They are found all over | | || all of the zones except | | || for the Death Egg Zone. | | || If you are attacked or | | || fall on spikes, you lose | | || your rings. For now, here's some brief descriptions of the seven zones. Each zone has two acts, with the exception of Metropolis Zone, which has three acts, and Sky Chase Zone, Wing Fortress Zone, and Death Egg Zone, all with just one solitary act. In each act, Sonic has ten minutes to race to the end, pass all the obstacles, and collect as many rings as possible. Pass as many starposts as well, for if Sonic should die, he would restart at the last- touched lamppost rather than the beginning. Almost all enemies are worth 100 points, and bosses are worth 1,000. =========================================================== ZONE 01: Emerald Hill Zone =========================================================== This is basically the tutorial level of the game. Set in a valley of Mobius, it resembles Sonic 1's Green Hill Zone. Watch out for inconveniently placed Coconuts (monkey-like Badnik). Yes, I know that you can beat both acts in thirty seconds apiece, but keep in mind Sonic Team made this in 1992. A new addition are the corkscrew paths. In order to pass them, just press RIGHT on the D-Pad. Overall, it makes a nice introduction for a Sonic game. =========================================================== ZONE 02: Chemical Plant Zone =========================================================== In this zone, you are in a factory. Robotnik's latest creation is Mega Mack, a purple liquid which Sonic can drown in because there are, inconveniently, no air bubbles for which Sonic can breathe. Nothing special here, except the tubes you teleport in are pretty cool. It's also nice to see an original zone idea. =========================================================== ZONE 03: Aquatic Ruin Zone =========================================================== In a nutshell, this level is the Labyrinth Zone set outside with a set water level, a path which makes underwater travel completely avoided, and without the water slides (possibly the only slightly entertaining thing from Labyrinth Zone). However, the entire zone is rather entertaining. Watch out for those Grade-A ANNOYING arrow launchers. Boy, I wish there were water shields back in the day. Anyway, another quick zone like Emerald Hill. Just try to keep above the surface and this will be even easier than the first zone! =========================================================== ZONE 04: Casino Night Zone =========================================================== Surely you remember the infamous Spring Yard zone from StH. The annoyance of getting bounced like a pinball. The maze of an arcade. Guess what? It's ten times worse. When on a flipper (or pair of), the A Button flips the left one, the B Button flips the right one, and the C Button flips both of them. For beginners, I suggest you simply use the C Button for flippers so you don't fumble with the controller in order to flip the correct flipper. Just like Sonic Spinball, if you've played that. Hold down any button when on a spring to charge up, then release for a burst of speed through a loop or two. For the speediest charge, wait until the spring is compressed all the way and yellow. The lack of Badniks is nice, but it took me awhile how to defeat those Crawls. Get as much points as possible and have fun. The main problem I have is the time limit, so watch out. =========================================================== ZONE 05: Hill Top Zone =========================================================== Hill Top is an underground-type zone, which is not one we've seen on the Genesis yet. An abundance of fire covers this zone, like Marble Zone, but throw in enough loops to give it that StH2 feel. Another fun zone, but then again most of the StH2 zones are. The main problem here are those annoying Badniks, mainly Sols. A neat little feature is that after you kill a Rexon, their backs can be used as stepping stones through the lava. Use those catapults correctly, and remember those red dots ARE Badniks, even if they are indestructible. =========================================================== ZONE 06: Mystic Cave Zone =========================================================== In this cave, Robotnik is looking for the Chaos Emeralds. It's too bad that they aren't there, huh? Anyway, the Badniks here are quite annoying, so watch out for those Flashers and Crawltons. Spiked obstacles line this cave, so keep an eye out for sharp, pointy objects. Also, monitors can be hidden behind poles, so try and look for those. Grab onto vines when you can, and make sure you don't get crushed by random objects. =========================================================== ZONE 07: Oil Ocean Zone =========================================================== Another water zone... but this time the water drowns you in an instant. Slides and elevators are quite present, so keep an eye out for them. Aquises tend to follow you, so watch for them. When you come upon the purple stars, avoid them. Unlike other levels, you spend a lot of time going up and down instead of across. Just be wary of the spiked bars, green-flamed oil tanks, and the slides, and you should be just fine. =========================================================== ZONE 08: Metropolis Zone =========================================================== The longest zone, and easily the hardest zone, this zone has several unique gadgets. To run on the screws, press RIGHT to move up, and LEFT to move down. Transporters are easy, just run into them. All three Badniks are extremely difficult to beat, so hang in there. Watch your timer, get through the several loops, don't get lost, and have fun; it is a game, after all. Ease remains after this zone... for a while. =========================================================== ZONE 09: Sky Chase Zone =========================================================== Basically, you are a wing-walker of Tails' plane (doesn't the little runt go away?) and are trying to catch up with Robotnik in his Wing Fortress. The slowest-moving zone, just avoid the fast-flying Balkiries, bomb-dropping Nebulas, and the awkward Turtloids. Otherwise, this is a very easy zone. =========================================================== ZONE 10: Wing Fortress Zone =========================================================== You're on Robotnik's flying ship! This zone is sort of short, but make sure to stay on the upper half of the zone. If you stray low, you must jump on aerial platforms, which can be quite difficult if you lack in the eye-hand coordination department. Only one Badnik, the infamous Clucker, resides about the zone. Just stay alive and don't fall! =========================================================== ZONE 11: Death Egg Zone =========================================================== Should be called "Death Egg Prototype Zone". Just two bosses, really. See the appropriate section for this. =============================================================================== [EMR] CHAPTER 08: The Chaos Emeralds and the Special Stage [EMR] =============================================================================== The Chaos Emeralds are the things that make the world go 'round... well, at least the world of our blue hero and his friends. There are seven of them, and Dr. R. wants these to power his Death Egg (prototype). The guy really has to take advantage of technological advances and stop with the natural resources. There are seven special stages, each one different for each emerald. In order to get to any secret zone, you need to have fifty rings at the time you reach a starpost. In the special stage, you are in a psuedo-3D gauntlet racing for rings. Avoid the bombs and get enough rings by each of the three checkpoints. Be warned: it doesn't get really hard until Stage 4 (gray emerald). =============================================================================== [BDN] CHAPTER 09: Badniks [BDN] =============================================================================== There are TWENTY-THREE different varieties of Badniks. The idea is to score first in at least three out of the five scoring categories (Score, Time, Rings at Finish, Max Rings, Item Boxes). If there is a tie, you go to a Special Stage. Special Stages are also available as an option for 2P Mode. A new item box in the 2P Mode is the Transfer Box. Hit this, and you and your opponent will immediately switch spots! A mean little trick you can use if you really suck at this mode. =============================================================================== [CCG] CHAPTER 12: Codes, Cheats, Glitches, and Oddities [CCG] =============================================================================== Admit it. You have wanted to cheat in almost any video game to come out. Fortunately, we have a section for you special people. Here it is. ========================================================== IGN CODES ========================================================== NOTE: Codes that are meant to be used when StH2 is locked onto S&K have a (*) next to the title of the code. BONUS POINTS For extra points, pass any zone in a certain amount of time. For the best bonus, enter the Debug Mode code. The clock will freeze and you'll always score a 50,000 bonus! Time Points 0:30 50,000 0:45 10,000 1:00 5,000 1:30 4,000 2:00 3,000 3:00 2,000 4:00 1,000 5:00 500 DEBUG MODE To enter Debug Mode, play these sounds from the level select screen: 1, 9, 9, 2, 1, 1, 2, 4. To select a different sprite, press A, and to place it on the screen, press C. Note that sprite selection is different from Zone to Zone. Also, instead of displaying the time elapsed, it displays the number of sprites currently on the screen. EASY CHAOS EMERALDS Start the game as you normally would. Get a Chaos Emerald, reset the game, and start the game from the options menu. You will keep the emeralds you have gained so far each time you start from the options menu. EMERALD HILL MUSIC To hear the Emerald Hill melody (at the title screen), go to sound test selection in the Options menu and listen to songs 1, 1, 2 and 4. Then highlight Player Select and press start. You will hear Oil Ocean at the beginning of the first level. Reset the game, and you will hear Emerald Hill! (*) EMERALD HILL SHORTCUT To breeze through Emerald Hill 1 and 2, connect Sonic & Knuckles with Sonic 2 and play as Knuckles. Climb as high as you can and glide to the right. You'll reach the end of the level in seconds! (*) EXTRA LIVES IN CHEMICAL PLANT ZONE If you have Sonic & Knuckles, hook it onto Sonic 2. Play until Chemical Plant Act 1. When you get to the wall with the Spiny Badnik and the warp tube on the floor. Break open the tube and go through it. When you come out you will see a Ring Box next to a tower. Climb up the tower and on the top you will find one 1-up. Glide left and you will find another 1-up. Glide to the left one more time and you will find yet one more 1-up. Since you won't want to go through the level again just glide to the right until you get to the tower you started from. Get on that first tower and glide to the right. The Act will be over and you will have three lives more that how much you started the act with. GREEN SONIC GLITCH To get Green Sonic you must enter the level select and debug code. Then you must choose one of the emerald hill zone levels because the code only works in Emerald Hill Zone (either act). When you start the level press B, you will be a ring, then press a four times, you will be four rings in a row going up or down, you then hold C and Right for about five seconds, then you go back to the beginning, keep pressing A until your the top of a waterfall. When the boss enters the screen get a hit on the boss then let go of B and the screen should be paused. Then press Start and there should be no boss music. OIL OCEAN MUSIC Here's a way to play the Oil Ocean music through the whole game. Go to the OPTIONS screen and enter sounds 1, 9, 9, 2, 1, 1, 2, 4. You should hear the Oil Ocean music. Next, hold A + Start and you should return to the SEGA screen with the Oil Ocean music still playing. PLAY AT NIGHT To play at night, enter the Debug code, then hold C and press Start to begin a level. SHIELDED TAILS To give Tails a shield, enter debug mode and hit a shield. Then place a teleport box down and hit that. Now Tails has a permanent shield. SLOW MOTION First enable Level Select. While playing, you can pause the game and use A to restart, B for slow motion, and C for frame advance. SUPER SONIC To become Super Sonic without getting all the Chaos Emeralds, first enable the level select. At the level select menu, go to the sound test item, and play sounds in this order: 4, 1, 2, 6. You should hear the music you get when you win a chaos emerald. Now select any level, get 50 rings, and jump. SUPER TAILS While in Debug Mode, create and position a "Transfer Box" monitor. When you hit it and you are Super Sonic, you lose all your powers but stay yellow. Tails looks the same but has invincibility (little stars flashing around him). To regain Super Sonic, let yourself get hit, then turn into a ring (press B) and place at least 50 rings on Tails. Exit debug mode (press B) and jump to become Super Sonic with Super Tails as a follower. "TAILS ---> MILES" MODE At the title screen press Up, Up, Up, Down, Down, Down, Up or Up, Up, Down, Down, Up, Up, Up, Up. A chime will sound and Tails will be called Miles or vice versa. TWO TAILS Enter the level select and debug codes, then go to the Sky Chase level. Using debug mode, create a transfer box and break it open. When you hear Sonic die press B to enter debug mode again. Move the cursor up until you see Tails and exit debug mode. To finish, jump and you'll have two Tails. WING FORTRESS SHORTCUT In Wing Fortress, go as far as you can to the right without climbing. Make sure you have some rings. When you see blades blocking your way, go ahead and hit them. As soon as you are invincible, walk through them. Jump on the platforms to the right and half the level will be finished. =========================================================== GAME GENIE CODES =========================================================== Remember Game Genie? These codes I have _not_ personally tested, so if they don't work, hey, you've been warned... ONE HIT AND YOU ARE INVINCIBLE 982T-C9F8 NOTE: You must get rings first. Several major features were removed and/or changed, and several different sites have tons of information about "Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Beta," including the following: Well, to start off, let's look at the level listings for S2B: - Green Hill Zone - Wood Zone - Metropolis Zone - Hill Top Zone - Hidden Palace Zone - Oil Ocean Zone - Dust Hill Zone - Casino Night Zone - Chemical Plant Zone - Genocide City Zone - Neo Green Hill Zone - Death Egg Zone Certainly very interesting. Let's take each zone into consideration. - Green Hill Zone remained the same, but its name was changed to the familiar "Emerald Hill Zone." - Wood Zone was scrapped entirely. No remains at all. A semi-playable version has been recovered by hackers, but no true definition shows of what this might have become... - Metropolis Zone was somewhat different, with much more challenging obstacles. - Hill Top Zone stayed nice and content with the way it was. - Hidden Palace Zone is the strangest mystery of them all. Among other notables is the Master Emerald, of all things! My guess, along with many others, is that Tails was supposed to be the original keeper of the Master Emerald, but that idea was scrapped and recycled in Sonic 3 with Knuckles as the guardian. - Oil Ocean Zone was nicely saved just the way it was. - "Dust Hill Zone? What?" Nothing major here, but a major palette change saved this zone as what we now know as "Mystic Cave Zone." - Casino Night Zone remained content as well, with no changes. - Chemical Plant, like the above Zone, stayed just the way it formerly was. - Genocide City Zone was also scrapped. Ironically, the accessible version from hackers only consists of Sonic falling to his doom, and nothing more. - Death Egg Zone was just like Genocide City Zone, located above. =============================================================================== [ACK] CHAPTER 13: Acknowledgments [ACK] =============================================================================== PEOPLE WEBSITES -- Webmasters -- GameFAQs - For hosting this FAQ - For continuing to show great -- Myself appreciation for FAQ writers such - For writing this FAQ as myself -- Rob (AU620RS@aol.com) - For being the first host of this - For informing me that hedgehogs FAQ are insectivores, not rodents -- IGN Codes - For providing the codes -- GameWinners - For providing the Game Genie codes -- Green Hill Zone - For information in the "Oddities" section =============================================================================== [ATC] CHAPTER 14: Author Contact [ATC] =============================================================================== I can be reached via e-mail at the following address: cyebersurpher@hotmail.com If you wish to e-mail me about game help, please put "Sonic the Hedgehog 2 GEN" as the title of the e-mail. Furthermore, do not ask a question involving something already addressed in the guide, such as "How many zones are in the game?". I have received countless e-mails with questions like that. They aren't appreciated. =============================================================================== [GUR] CHAPTER 15: Guide Usage Rules [GUR] =============================================================================== DOs: -- Please e-mail me before publishing this guide.
