INTRODUCTION I'm writing this strategy guide because a lot of people think this game is *extremely hard* or bad. Their reasons include laggy controls, or some idea that Wolverine is really weak, and gets killed really easily...and that the bosses will kick your ass. This is because they're not Wolverine. Why do people think Sonic games on the Genesis are so slow? This is because they're not Sonic The Hedgehog. Try letting Sonic play his own game. This is what you get... http://www.gdward.plus.com/site/avi/scd-cc3.avi or this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bclMF267TM or...you get the idea now I think. That's what it looks like when Sonic is playing through his own game. If you've been one of these people who think this game is hard, you need to let Wolverine handle the scary bad guys from now on. *~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~* II. Move List Roll: Down+Jump (lets you go under most enemy projectiles, repeat rapidly for wave dashing) Quick Kick: Kick (your fastest attack, there is a high kick if you press kick again, but don't bother with it) Low Kick: Down+Kick (this attack has the most range of all your attacks) Slash Combo: Slash Slash Low Slash Combo: Down+Slash Slash Reverse Backhand: Back+Slash (you'll only hit enemies with this by accident) Backhand Slash: Up Claw Dive: Down+Forward+Jump Jump Kick: Jump, Kick Jump Slash: Jump, Slash (also used to climb ladders/walls/trees/chains/pipes) Screw Attack: Jump, Jump (looks like the screw attack, really it's called the Jump Spin) Double Spike Attack: Hold Kick, Slash Low Double Spike Attack: Hold Kick+Down, Slash Aerial Double Claw Attack: Jump, Down+Slash (most powerful air attack) Uppercut Slash: Down, Up+Slash (most powerful ground attack - not being able to do it is not an excuse) *~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~* V. Strategy Guide and Level Tips I have in fact beaten this game on Hard without using passwords, *and* every level on Hard using passwords (this is harder because you only have One Life To Live). Every level can be beaten without dying, including Lunar Hallucinations. Unfortunately for you I also believe in the adventure of level exploration (and laziness) so I'm only going to give general tips, 1-up locations, and enemy strategies. === A. Weapon X Laboratory === The game starts when Wolverine gets a mysterious photograph (which he is holding during the cut scene) and a message on the computer showing him the video of his origin (which you then get to see, the first part on a computer monitor with the message "Codename Weapon X - Priority Clearance Only - Not to be seen by Major Logan"). You then don your costume, break your handcuffs (because that's how Professor X keeps all his X-men) that you weren't wearing at the beginning of the cut scene, and you set out to the Weapon X Laboratory in Canada. --- Enemy Strategies --- Security Orb: The first enemy in the game. The easiest way to defeat them is to use the standing Double Spike Attack twice. You can also Uppercut Slash them once if you'd like to kill them in one hit. Scientists: These guys go down easily to a Claw Dive followed by an Uppercut Slash. Robot Dogs: Chase these around with Low Kicks until they're next to a wall. Then repeated Uppercut Slashes will do the trick. Guards near or next to walls: These are usually located by walls with switches, so for convenience either start them off with a Claw Dive or Screw Attack, and then finish them off with repeated Backhand Slashes to avoid having the switch take your hit. Guards: Take these out with a Claw Dive, Uppercut Slash, walk one step forward Low Kick, Claw Dive. Green Robots: Run to the middle of the room, and crouch under their fire. Then do a Claw Dive, Jump Slash, Double Spike Attack (you'll get hit here), run back to the other side of the room, crouch under the bullets, and repeat the same three hit combo. (Claw Dive, Jump Slash, Double Spike Attack) Then do repeated Jump Slashes until both arms fall off the robot. Try to get full jumps in, as you can get two Jump Slashes in if timed right. Once the arms are off do repeated Double Spike Attacks until the Robot dies. The Big Gun: When you get into the room with the big gun, do a Screw Attack. Try to land in the center of the room, on the edge of the center platform...the very edge. Not in the middle. This way the gun will miss you, and you can do repeated Screw Attacks to finish it off. The Final Scientist: Either jump up the stairs the moment you can, and then roll under the projectile and follow your roll with repeated Low Slash Combos, or do a running Screw Attack up stairs which will hopefully have enough momentum to hit the scientist and make him drop his gun. --- Level Tips --- The Elsie Dee timer resets after the room with the second Green Robot. Jump Slash the ladders to climb them. A 1-up is located right after the room where you fight the first green robot. Simply follow the platforms. Slash at the electric fence until it doesn't let you anymore, then Roll through it when the red light is off. Low Slash seems to be the most effective at this. Regarding the elevator switches. You have to hit them once to make the elevator go down, then again to make it go up...don't wait. Hitting the switch the second time has a delayed effect, so you can hit the switch twice and the elevator will still go all the way down to get you. This saves time. When you come to a part in the level after the second Green Robot where a Guard is standing with a Robot Dog, running Screw Attack right over them, and as you land wave dash away as fast as you can until you come to the next ladder. (This just nets you a lot of style points.) === B. Dead Man's Land === You leave the Laboratory and you're in the snowy region of Northern Canada known as Dead Man's Land. Professor X is sending help, but Wolverine isn't interested in being handcuffed again. --- Enemy Strategies --- Flying Machine Guns: Run from these. Snow Speeders: Go slowly and jump over these (without a Screw Attack). Soldiers: Fighting these guys is tricky because the ground in the caves will stop them from sliding sometimes, and not others. Try to get the drop on them with a Claw Dive, and follow it up with repeated Uppercut Slashes to finish them off as quickly as possible. You can also try to Screw Attack over them and run (except for the time you fight three in a row in the cave), because they aren't worth your time. Helicopter: You can destroy three of the guns that shoot at you, but don't focus on that. Focus on screw attacking or Jump Slashing the cock pit. Albert (Robot Wolverine): Almost every fight in this game has you taking an offensive approach. This is the sole fight where you want to take a defensive approach instead. Start this off by tip toeing slowly...and as soon as Albert's portrait comes up, jump straight up and do an Aerial Double Claw Attack (Jump, Down+Slash) followed by two Uppercut Slashes if Albert is still to your right. If he is to your left, do your best to get back on his left with a Screw Attack followed by Uppercut Slashes. When Albert is out of range (IE out of range so that he can't hit your *attacks* with his) he will run away, when you see him run away, jump straight up, and do another Aerial Double Claw Attack followed by two Uppercut Slashes, hesitate, and then try to hit him with a third Uppercut Slash to knock him out of range again so you can repeat. If instead of running away, he does a short hop jump kick, hit him with two more Uppercut Slashes, hesitate, third Uppercut Slash, etc. Two Soldiers together: These two ride up on an elevator together right before you need to climb a wall. Run up to them as they rise, and do a Low Slash Combo. Wait for one to swing his gun, then do a Roll, three more Low Slash Combos, three Low Kicks, and they should be cornered, and you might get shot...either way, do another Roll and then two / three standing Slash Combos. Three Snow Speeders: Right after the Two Soldiers, we have another tricky part. To jump over the Three Snow Speeders you need do a running Screw Attack jump, start the jump as soon as the pile of skeletons goes off the screen. Lurker - There are three ways to do this best. Method 1: Claw Dive that hits & lands; Uppercut Slash, Backhand Slash, Claw Dive, Jump Slash, Backhand Slash, Claw Dive, Jump Slash, Backhand Slash, repeated Low Slash Combos. Method 2: Claw Dive that gets hit out of the air by Lurker, walk one step forward as Lurker whiffs a slash, Uppercut Slash, Backhand Slash, Claw Dive, Jump Slash, Backhand Slash, Claw Dive, Jump Slash, Backhand Slash, take one full step forward, repeated Low Slash Combos. Method 3: Long ranged Low Kick, (repeat Claw Dive, Jump Slash, Backhand Slash until you get to the wall), repeated Low Slash Combos. --- Level Tips --- The Elsie Dee timer gets reset before the Helicopter, and after the Helicopter. Jump Slash the walls to climb them in this level. Start the level off with a running wave dash. Continue wave dashing until you get to the pile of skeletons. After you defeat the Helicopter, you fall down a slope of ice. Jump during this fall to find a health pickup. A 1-up is located in the caves. When you first enter the cave there is a long / tall wall to your left. Climb up that and the upper path. Jump over the guard, get a health pickup, and then fall to your left to get the 1-up. Right after this one up, you fight a Soldier on the lower path. You can Jump Slash the wall that leads up right after him to get to two hidden health pickups. === C. Fury In The (Canadian) Forest === Now that you're out of Dead Man's Land, it logically leads you to a forest. Apparently the X-men have caught up with you, and Storm asks why you won't let them help. If their help is more handcuffs, then no thank you. This is my favorite level. A shame it's so short. --- Enemy Strategies --- The Hand: Just for kicks, if you do a perfect Screw Attack to your right at the very start of the level, you'll be between a Red Ninja, and a Blue Ninja, and you can use the Double Spike Attack repeatedly to kill both at the same time. The Hand will die in one(!) or two Uppercut Slashes. Lady Deathstrike: Start out by Uppercut Slashing her as much as you can. When she runs away, Claw Dive after her. Repeat. Sabertooth: Hit him with a Claw Dive, followed by a standing Slash Combo, one standing Slash, cancelled into a Low Double Spike Attack, Low Double Spike Attack, if done right, he'll try hit you for the first time, miss and then he'll run at so you can hit him with another standing Slash Combo, one standing Slash, cancelled into a Low Double Spike Attack, Low Double Spike Attack. He heals as fast as you do, so watch out. (lol) --- Level Tips --- Jump Slash the trees to climb them. There is a 1-up on the tallest cliff (fall just to the right). Hopefully the Red Ninja up there doesn't knock you away from it. === D. Lunar Hallucinations === So now Wolverine knows who sent him the photograph and the computer message. He sniffs him out in New York City all the way from a forest in Canada! That must be some cologne... So you get to New York, and who's there waiting for you? Cyber! He has poison tipped claws made just for you, and he slashes you right away... --- Enemy Strategies --- Run from the normal enemies. They include Tiny Martians with Big Guns, Mini Lurkers, and Mini Sabertooths. Cyber: As soon as you can move, do a Claw Dive, Backhand Slash, and then Screw Attack over him. Run all the way to the right, and take some time to heal if you need it. Take some time to watch his running pattern, and then when you think you've got it down, Screw Attack over him so that it hits him to the right, then do two Low Kicks, Claw Dive, repeat. --- Level Tips --- The Elsie Dee timer resets when you get to Cyber. There is a 1-up on the fourth tier, all the way at the left of the screen. (you can't miss it) When you're on the right side of the stage, meteors won't fall, so you can take time to heal. === E. The Inner Circle === You wake up from the Nightmare World to find Cyber dying in a pool of his own toxin. Now you're free to break into The Inner Circle's plush hideout hidden in the back alleys of New York City. They sic their body guards on you right away. --- Enemy Strategies --- Body Guards: Claw Dive, land, Uppercut Slash, walk half a foot forward, Quick Kick, repeat. Robot Unicycle: Claw Dive, land, Uppercut Slash repeat. --- Level Tips --- There's a 1-up near the start of the level. Go up the stairs, and to the left. === E. The Dungeon === The body guards aren't cutting it, and you're *this* close to getting your hands on the man who has sent you on this whole crusade. He's ready to kill you himself though, and he has a special surprise in store for you... --- Enemy Strategies --- Body Guards: Claw Dive, land, Uppercut Slash, walk half a foot forward, Low Kick, repeat. Doomsday Robot: Start running, and then do a Roll up to the shield, do two standing Slash Combos, followed by a quick Uppercut Slash, then keep trying Screw Attack's until you're standing on the Robot, then do standing Slash Combos until the gun falls off. As soon as the gun falls off, do two quick Uppercut Slashes, or if you get knocked off again, Screw Attack until you can land and do an Uppercut Slash to seal the deal. --- Level Tips --- The Elsie Dee timer resets at the Doomsday Robot. Jump Slash the chains to climb them. The section where you need to jump from chain to chain just requires faith. You don't need the Screw Attack to make these jumps...however if you're good at pressing Jump, Jump, Jump, Slash, then it will make it slightly easier (or harder). There are four 1-up's in this level (the most lives you can hold is 9, so don't bother with the effort if you have 9 lives already). The first is under the area where you have to hop from chain to chain in order to cross. The second is, once you're above the area where you had to hop from chain to chain, do a Roll under the ledge to the left, and you'll fall onto a platform with first chain you have to climb. Do a running Claw Dive to your right for the second 1-up. The third is when you're at the highest part of the level you can get to, there's a buzz saw, followed by a gap in the floor, and a chain that you don't have to climb. Climb up that chain, and you'll see a platform with a gap in the floor. If you do it just right, you can press Jump, Jump as fast as you can, to do a Screw Attack up through that gap and onto the platform. Claw Dive to the left for health pickups, and Claw Dive to the right for the third 1-up. The elevators boost your jump if you jump on the way up. This also gives your Screw Attack boosted height to help you reach the higher tiers. From the third 1-up, fall to the ground, go to the right, and when you come to the end of the platforms, Claw Dive for a health pickup, then do a running Screw Attack to the right for another health pickup. From here you can do a running Screw Attack to the right for two more health pickups, or you can do one to the left for another health pickup, and try your luck at doing a perfect running screw attack to your left one more time for the fourth 1-up. If you make it to the fourth 1-up without falling, then Screw Attack back to where the hidden two health pickups are, and fall to your right. After you pass the second part where you can hop from chain to chain (but you don't have to, you can fall and just hop over the buzz saws, you come to the tier that has three lasers on the ceiling and no obstacles. This is easily passed by wave dashing through the whole thing. === E. The Sewers (Beneath New York City) === As you struggle with the man who possibly holds the answers to your origin, the platform you're on collapses, killing him. Trevor Fitzroy seems to be the cause and is ready to kill you too. You may never know the answers to your past, but you're going to make damn sure you know about your future. --- Enemy Strategies --- Flying Morlocks: Run past them. Energy throwing Morlocks: Claw Dive, land, Uppercut Slash, walk a foot forward, Low Kick, repeat. Burly Morlocks: Claw Dive, Jump Slash, Backhand Slash Bloodscream: Claw Dive that hits & lands; Uppercut Slash, Uppercut Slash, Claw Dive, Jump Slash, Backhand Slash, Claw Dive, Jump Slash, Backhand Slash, repeated Low Slash Combos. Method 2: Long ranged Low Kick, (repeat Claw Dive, Jump Slash, Backhand Slash until you get to the wall), repeated Low Slash Combos. Trevor Fitzroy's Body Guards: Roll up to them and Low Slash, Roll up to the and Low Slash, repeat until they're all dead. If you're feeling gutsy go for Uppercut Slashes between the rolls. Trevor Fitzroy: Wave dash all the way to the left wall as soon as his portrait appears, and then face to the right. When you see his suit of armor lowering on screen, time an Aerial Double Claw Attack, followed by repeating Screw Attack's until his rocket launcher falls off. Once this happens, things proceed like this...Screw Attack over his punches until you get hit, then you Uppercut Slash until you can Uppercut Slash twice without getting hit. Then you Screw Attack again until you get hit. Repeat until he's dead. --- Level Tips --- Elsie Dee's timer doesn't get reset in this level. Jump Slash the red pipes to climb them. In the first room with the leaky pipes, when you get the two health pickups that are side by side in the upper right corner of the room, Roll to the left, and it will put you in just the right spot to Claw Dive to the right to hit the switch you need to proceed. In the room after you fight Bloodscream, there are three pipes dripping slime and an energy throwing Morlock. As soon as you pass the second slime dripping pipe, this is the perfect time to Claw Dive at the Morlock, bypassing the third slime dripping pipe. When you get to the next energy throwing Morlock, instead of doing a Claw Dive, do a Screw Attack over his energy blast, and him and then do a running Roll to the right. Right after that Morlock is the first of three 1-up's. Once you get into the next room, you'll encounter the next energy throwing Morlock. This one is a bit tricky to fight. The best way is to run one step to the left, then two steps to the right, then turn around and Claw Dive to the left, followed by an Uppercut Slash, wait a second, Roll under his energy blast, do another Uppercut Slash, followed by a Low Kick to finish him off. If you get hit with an energy blast, then Roll to the right towards the wall, Roll under another energy blast, and do an Uppercut Slash, Low Kick. Immediately after that Morlock is the second 1-up, and this is one that you only have one chance to get. Go to the left and touch the wall (under the health pickup) by where the slime from the two pipes is landing, and do a wave dash to the right, under the slime. It should propel you fast enough to clear the gap. As soon as you're over the gap do a Claw Dive to the right, and you'll have your 1-up. After that 1-up, kill the burly Morlock, get the health pickup to your left at the top of the wall, and then do another wave dash to your right over the gap to get another health pickup. From here, wave dash to your left, into the acid, and keep wave dashing until you hit the wall for you to climb. The final 1-up is after you climb the really tall red pipe. Don't jump down and get the four health pickups, no. Claw Dive to the right for two health pickups and the final 1-up. *~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~* VI. Final Comments Well there you have it. Yeah, the ending sucks...almost all the cut scenes in the game feel pretty awesome, but then they seriously skimped on the ending. The reward is in the journey. If you can beat this game on hard, you almost certainly are making it look like Wolverine is playing his own game. Heck, if you can beat it on Easy without using continues then you probably are then as well. Want to put a Wolverine game on blast for being a piece of crap? Try the Super NES version. It sucks. Elsie Dee will find you and kill you in that one too. The timer is only hidden. *~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~*
