[StpSwp1] Stop'n'Swop was a hidden feature in the Banjo-Kazooie game. The feature was not fully implemented into the game due to many technical difficulties with the actual usage of the idea and changes made to the Nintendo 64 system in it's 1999 update. The two hints in the original game that nudged players to delve deeper into the mystery of Stop'n'Swop were the Ice Key visible in a cave and the video shown at the end of the game if a player achieved a 100% game. The Stop'n'Swop feature included the collection of six colored eggs and an Ice Key which could be used in the game's sequel, "Banjo-Tooie". ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- =============================================================================== ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Section 02 - Stop'n'Swop in Banjo Kazooie ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The History of Stop'n'Swop [StpSwp2] Stop'n'Swop was first introduced at the end of the game if a player had earned all 100 Jiggys, awarding a cutscene with two Eggs and the Ice Key which the player was told could be used in the game's sequel, Banjo-Tooie. Banjo-Tooie implemented the Eggs and Key, but not in the way that was originally planned. Three miniature bouncing BK Game Cartridges could be found containing the three items seen in the ending of Banjo Kazooie. Unsatisfied with this outcome, many tried to solve the mystery of Stop'n'Swop. Eventually, two gamers from the Rare Witch Project website discovered, via hacking, the codes to unlock not just three, but seven of these items. There were in fact four additional eggs hidden within the game, making a total of six colored Eggs and one Ice Key. When the first of the seven items were collected, a new screen was added to the player's menu titled "Stop'n'Swop", granting this mystery it's name. Over the years, many tried to delve further into the mysteries of why Rare had decided not to fully implement Stop'n'Swop. Eventually it was discovered that Rare had chosen to scrap the idea due to problems with the N64 system and the idea of Hot Swapping (explained in the next section). During this time, Rare placed hints about Stop'n'Swop in two other games; Banjo-Pilot and Grabbed by the Ghoulies. A decade after the original game, Stop'n'Swop finally came to it's fruition in the game Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, which tied in to the remake of the original Banjo-Kazooie, available on Xbox Live Marketplace. The two games integrated the now fully functional Stop'n'Swop feature. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hot Swapping [StpSwp3] The idea behind Stop'n'Swop was to change game cartridges during gameplay, thus allowing certain data to be copied over from one game to another via the Rambus Memory in the Nintendo 64. In 1999, Nintendo 64s were changed, creating a huge problem with the memory swap, and Rare was unable to implement the feature without risk of damaging a player's gaming system. Without a safe way to swap the games and copy the memory, Rare was forced to scrap the idea and come up with a new one. As of 2008, most videogame systems have their own Hard Drive, allowing memory to be easily copied; Back in 1998; however, all data was stored on the game cartridges themselves; This is why the swapping was such an issue. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The 100% Ending [StpSwp4] Upon completion of the game after having earned all 100 Jiggys, a special ending will play. Here is the dialogue: Mumbo--: Hey ...Mumbo got secret pictures! Kazooie: Nice one, bone brain! What's on them? Mumbo--: Got picture of things you missed. Secret used in next game! Banjo--: Oooh...Did you hear that Kazooie? We're going to be in another game! Kazooie: Great, so let's see the pictures then, skirt boy! Mumbo--: Did you get all 100 jigsaw pieces? Banjo--: We sure did Mr. Mumbo! Kazooie: Yeah... so show us your secrets, mask midget! Mumbo--: Pictures show things you missed. Secrets that are for new game Banjo-Tooie! Banjo--: Banjo-Tooie! Sounds great, is it any good? Mumbo--: Mumbo's jaw dropped in awe... Kazooie: Hey... Why isn't it called Banjo-Kazooie-Tooie? I'd better be in it too, short stuff! Mumbo--: Banjo-Tooie make Banjo-Kazooie look like joke. Mumbo show you pictures of stuff can use in new game! Here, [Mumbo holds up the first picture; The picture shows Sharkfood Isle raised in Treasure Trove Cove] Mumbo--: Find first secret on the beach! Kazooie: Hey short, how did you make that rock rise up? Mumbo--: Hurrr...Hurrr...Mumbo not telling! [Banjo and Kazooie enter the raised Isle] Banjo--: Wow...A secret cavern! Mumbo--: Bear and bird must climb to top... Kazooie: What's up there, Dumbskull? Mumbo--: Wait and see, O Filthy Feathered One... Banjo--: Gulp...It looks rather high... Kazooie: Don't worry Banjo, it looks like I have to get us up there! [Banjo is seen walking next to a Pink Egg] [Mumbo hold up the second picture; The picture shows Freezeezy Peak] Mumbo--: Next secret found in snow! Banjo--: That's Wozza's Cave... Banjo--: We've already been in here... Kazooie: Hey, what was that egg for on the beach? Tell us! Mumbo--: Bird be quiet, watch picture... [Banjo and Kazooie jump onto a platform in Wozza's Cave] Kazooie: What's through here? Banjo--: Corrr, A giant Ice Key! Kazooie: I know where I'd like to stick that... Banjo--: Kazooie!!! [Mumbo holds up the third picture; The picture shows Banjo and Kazooie enter a large door in the desert] Mumbo--: Another Secret can get in desert. Kazooie: Nice mumbo ,please tell us what the eggs and key are for. Mumbo--: No, Bird rude to mumbo, not tell! Banjo--: I wonder what's in here? Kazooie: Huh, it's only another stupid egg... [Mumbo stops showing the pictures] Banjo--: Wow! How do we get to those? Mumbo--: Mumbo not telling, find out in Banjo-Tooie! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Sandcastle Codes [StpSwp5] Full credit for these codes go to Ice Mario (Alan Pierce) and SubDrag (Mitchell Kleiman) for hacking into the game and finding the programmer codes to unlock the Stop'n'Swop items. Visit http://www.rarewitchproject.com for more info. Once these codes are input into the Sandcastle Floor of Treasure Trove Cove, the corresponding Eggs and Key appear in the locations listed. Once collected, they appear on the Stop'n'Swop screen. The Ice Key was the very first ever collected by using the moon jump code inside of the cave to jump over the barrier. Other codes were later created to open the Desert Door and Raise the Sharkfood Isle. Here is a list of some of the golden oldies: Version 1.0 Cartridge DE000400 0000 Enable Code (Must be on) 8124C9D8 1700 81287BA4 1700 812D3DC0 1300 B0ED11AF 0001 See SharkFood Island Cave D0281251 0020 L Button For Moon Jump 8137C4BC 43E0 Version 1.1 Cartridge DE000400 0000 Enable Code (Must Be On) 8124B728 1700 812864E4 1700 812D2E00 1300 D02804C9 0020 L Button For Moon Jump 8137B6BC 43E0 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Stop'n'Swop Screen [StpSwp7] When a player chooses to go to the "View Totals" screen and has collected at least one of the seven Stop'n'Swop items, an extra screen is added and can be seen when the player toggles over to the very right screen. This displays all of the Stop'n'Swop items that the player has collected thus far in the game. In order of appearance, they are: Cyan, Pink, Blue, Green, Red, Yellow, Key. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stop'n'Swop Speech Text [StpSwp8] When you collect the Ice Key and the first two of six eggs, the following text will be displayed: Egg #1/Banjo: Oooh...an egg! I'm sure we'll find a use for this somewhere... Egg #2/Banjo: Wow... Another one of those special eggs Ice Key/Kazooie: Cool...An Enormous Ice Key! We ought to keep this for later... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- =============================================================================== ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Section 03 - Stop'n'Swop in Banjo-Tooie The Key and Two Eggs [StpSwp9] The Ice Key: After having learned the "Grip-Grap" ability, a player could go to the Jinjo Village from Spiral Mountain and head right into the sand area. Jumping up to the ledge and Grip-Grapping across, the player could go inside a tunnel and find a BK Game Cartridge. Breaking it open reveals the Ice Key. Using the Ice Key: In the Ice Side of Hailfire Peaks, there is a safe which requires the Ice Key. Opening it reveals a mega-glowbo. If a player takes the glowbo to Humba Wumba in Pine Grove, she will transform Kazooie into a Dragon capable of breathing fire. The Blue Egg: In Spiral Mountain, fly into the opening at the top of the waterfall. Swim upstream into the secret room and Grip Grap along the ledge to climb behind the waterfall inside. Walk down the tunnel to find a BK Game Cartridge. Breaking it open reveals the Blue Egg. The Pink Egg: In Spiral Mountain, head to the top of the mountain and fly over to the Grate. Shoot a grenade egg at it and fly inside to reveal a BK Game Cartridge. Breaking it open reveals the Pink Egg. Heggy the Hen [StpSwpA] Heggy the Hen is located down in Wooded Hollow in a Giant Egg. Giving her the Stop'n'Swop eggs gives you prizes: Blue Egg: Gives you a code for homing eggs. (Code = HOMING) Pink Egg: Gives you the Breegull Bash - Tap A to slam Kazooie to the floor. There is also a Yellow Egg in her house. Once you can separate Banjo and Kazooie and Kazooie can hatch eggs, sit atop the Yellow Egg to reveal another secret. This egg grants the player the ability to use "Jinjo" in multiplayer. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- =============================================================================== ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Section 04 - Allusions to Stop'n'Swop Grabbed by the Ghoulies [StpSwpB] In 2003, the game Grabbed by the Ghoulies featured a Blackboard in the game which had writing hinting at Stop'n'Swop. The board read as follows: "[egg] [egg] [egg] [egg] [key] = ?" The board also read the following homework assignment: ------------------------ Homework -------- 1) Collect Ice Key 2) Collect Eggs 3) Activate secret level ------------------------ Banjo Pilot [StpSwpC] In 2005, the game Banjo-Pilot featured Cheato selling an item called "Stop'n' Swop" for 999 Cheato Pages. Upon buying it, Cheato says, " So you want to know about Stop'n'Swop, eh? I hope you're ready. Here goes...Why don't you stop annoying me and swap this game for a nice book or something?" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- =============================================================================== ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Section 05 - Stop'n'Swop in Xbox Arcade Banjo Kazooie Activation of Stop'n'Swop [StpSwpD] To activate Stop'n'Swop in the Xbox Arcade version of Banjo Kazooie, a player needs to have a save file from Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts. Once the save file is detected, the seven Stop'n'Swop items become activated and are then collectable. Stop'n'Swop Locations Revisited [StpSwpE] Location of Ice Key---: Freezeezy Peak; Wozza's Cave; Jump to ledge. Location of Pink Egg--: Treasure Trove Cove; Sharkfood Isle; Climb up inside. Location of Blue Egg--: Gobi's Valley; Door on the hill behind the Sphinx. Location of Cyan Egg--: Mad Monster Mansion; In the cellar; In a barrel. Location of Green Egg-: Mad Monster Mansion; In the bathroom with Loggo. Location of Red Egg---: Rusty Bucket Bay; In the Captains Cabin Location of Yellow Egg: Click Clock Wood; Nabnut's House in Winter Stop'n'Swop Dialogue Change [StpSwpF] In the Xbox version of the game, if you view the 100% ending, everything plays the same as the N64 version, except the words "Banjo-Tooie" are replaced by "Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts". Upon collecting the Eggs and Ice Key, the Furry Duo have changed speech text; After collecting the first Egg, Banjo says, "Oooh...An Egg! That's one of the seven Stop'n'Swop items we've been looking for. I reckon it'll unlock something special in my Nuts & Bolts adventure. Can't wait..." After collecting the second Egg, Banjo says, "Wow, another one of those special Stop'n'Swop eggs! Hope this isn't a cruel joke and we can actually use them this time!" After collecting the Ice Key, Kazooie says, "Cool...An enormous Ice Key! We should keep this Stop'n'Swop item for later..." After collecting all seven Stop'n'Swop items, Kazooie says, "Hey Banjo, We've found all the Stop'n'Swop items. Time to ditch the checklist and stash them away for use in Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts!" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- =============================================================================== ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Section 06 - Stop'n'Swop in Xbox Arcade Banjo Tooie - [StpSwpX] Once you have the eggs from Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie's Hen, Heggy, offers the ability to use them! There are a few key differences in this version of the game in comparison to it's N64 counterpart: - The game cartridges no longer contain the normal 2 eggs and ice key; they now contain three special eggs, one gold, one silver, and one bronze. These are for use with SnS2; More on that in a moment. - None of the original Tooie eggs are in the game anymore, and only one of the nests is even used. Talk to Heggy once you have the BK SnS eggs. She will hatch them all; here are the prizes: Yellow Egg: Banjo-Kazooie Gamer Pic Red Egg---: Banjo-Kazooie Xbox Theme Green Egg-: HOMING cheat for homing eggs Blue Egg--: Breegull Bash Pink Egg--: Jinjo as a Multiplayer Character Cyan Egg--: Stop'n'Swop II Found (SnS2 Item) Also, once you hatch each, a checkmark will appear on it in the menu. Once the item is "used", and provided you have Banjo-Kazooie Nuts'n'Bolts as well as the DLC (Log's Lost Challenges), then a blueprint for each Stop'n'Swop item used in Tooie will appear on your Nuts'n'Bolts gamer profile. There are seven blueprints, each representing one of the seven items (6 eggs, 1 key); The key's blueprint is obtained once you open the safe containing the mega-glowbo. The blueprints are the winners of Rare's Nuts'n'Bolts vehicle contest. They are as follows: Rotating Turret Carousel Robot Transformation Machine Tank Flying Beetle Gruntling -------------- Stop'n'Swop II That's right, in Banjo-Tooie's reincarnation, another feature has been added called "Stop'n'Swop II". There are 7 awards you can obtain that count towards this and will show on the menu to the right of the Stop'n'Swop 1 menu. Here is the list and how to obtain them: "Oh no, not again..."-- : Hatch all six of the original Stop'n'Swop eggs. "Lucky Loser" --------- : Hatch the Bronze egg in the BK pack behind the metal grate on Spiral Mountain. "Better than a slap - " : Hatch the Silver egg in the BK pack behind the waterfall on Spiral Mountain. "And the winner is... " : Hatch the Golden egg in the BK pack in Jinjo Village. "Now who's boss?" ----- : Beat every boss under the "Replay" menu with a total combined time of under 15 minutes. "Calmer chameleon" ---- : Use every Humba Wumba transformation at least once. "Heroic failure" ------ : Die 40 times in Boss Replay mode. Once you obtain a given 'award', it will appear in a list under the menu to the right of Stop'n'Swop with the title appropriately being "Stop'n'Swop II". The awards, as of now, do absolutely nothing; They may be used in a future upcoming Banjo game. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- =============================================================================== ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Section 07 - Stop'n'Swop in BK: Nuts & Bolts The Crate Locations [StpSwpG] After collecting the Eggs and Ice Key in the Xbox Arcade game, Nuts & Bolts will search for the data of a player having collected any Stop'n'Swop items. After loading the game, any Stop'n'Swop items collected will play a small cutscene showing where to collect the "swopped" item in Showdown Town. The Ice Key and each Egg, once collected, will activate a specific Crate for collection in the Hub World of Nuts & Bolts. Here is the list of each of those Crates: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Crate - Stop N Swop - Ice Key Location: Atop Boggy's Gym Contains: Flag (x2) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Crate - Stop N Swop - Cyan Egg Location: On a rooftop above the Theatre District; Use a drainpipe to get up. Contains: Disco Ball ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Crate - Stop N Swop - Yellow Egg Location: Beach below the lighthouse. You must have the Horn to dispel the pig atop. Contains: Googly Eyes ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bottles "Stop'n'Swop Truth" [StpSwpH] In Showdown Town, Bottles has an item for sale called "Stop'n'Swop" truth for 6,000 Notes. There are not 6,000 Notes in the game; The only way to buy this item is to hack the game. Upon buying the item, Bottles says, "I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you, and we couldn't show that in a game with this rating. Put it out of your mind and think happy thoughts! Thanks for the notes!" That is all he says; Nothing else happens. Other Stop'n'Swop References [StpSwpI] In Banjoland, there is a large wall of ice; Inside of this wall you can see an Ice Key, a Mystery Egg, and a Stop'n'Swop Disc. There are also various Eggs scattered about the level with inactive Gruntbots waiting inside. In the Terrarium of Terror, one of the Jinjos wants you to fetch his Ice Key, and he makes blatant references to Stop'n'Swop. In the dumpster of Spiral Mountain, all of the Jinjo-Fetch items are seen. The Ice Key mentions above is also in here. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- =============================================================================== ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Section 08 - Summary of Stop'n'Swop 1 and 2 [StpSwpS] Here's a quick recap of what every Stop'n'Swop item for the Xbox360 trilogy does: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The six Stop'n'Swop Eggs from Banjo-Kazooie: Effect in XboxBK: No effect.
