INTRODUCTION G0100 =============================================================================== Welcome to International Track & Field 2000 (IT&F) for the Playstation. This game was released some time ago. This guide is written for the NTSC (US) release, default buttons might be different and you'll need to adjust accordingly. This game is a lot better than the newer ESPN Track & Field game for the PS2 and much much better than the Sega Decathlon games for the Dreamcast. The official Olympic games are interested, Sydney 2000 had an 8 player mode which is certainly cool for 100m sprint. However, it failed in control and appeal. The manual that comes with the game is not very useful and often does not explain an event too well. The short display before each event is actually better at showing you the controls so use that if you need a quick reminder. BASICS G0200 =============================================================================== IT&F is a simple yet sometimes tough game. You'll need to be good at punching those buttons fast. It is best played with friends rather than alone. It also saves your breath during events when it's the other person's turn. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TECHNIQUE G0210 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is the hardest section to describe... IT&F is all about speed and button bashing. If you master this you'll be good at 80% of the events. It's not only speed, it's awesome speed you'll need to master. Unless you have changed the default button outlet, you should press both Square and Circle as quickly as possible, alternatively it may say but trust me: it's so fast it won't recognize anything alternative. Best way to do this is by using both hands and then lay your index finger against your thumb and let them vibrate the button by straining your hand, muscle control comes from the wrist. Also you should try to breath in and hold your breath while you do this, and quickly breath out and breath in again for the rest of the event. Whilst running is the main part of the game, don't forget the Actions. The game refers to it as "Jump1" and "Jump2" buttons. Those are in every event so even with your hands busy bashing those running buttons, you'll need to quickly tap the action buttons for the event to be successful. Usually you don't need to run while using the action buttons, but sometimes you must try to run and then do a quick changeover to either Triangle or X. If the main part of an event is running, don't bother trying to look at your speedometer. It might help you to see if you are actually doing well, it is better to concentrate and your technique. There is nothing worse than button-bashing and thinking you are doing well, only to see that you are way slower than anybody else. This is personal I guess, maybe you prefer to watch the race or your speed gauge while you are racing. Another thing to consider is the area you play. A hard surface is certainly better than a soft one, don't choose a sofa if you have a carpet available. Similarly you could try to clamp the controller between the legs, or between one leg and the sofa and still have access to the buttons on the right. I've never tried an arcade gamepad, they look like they could be used nicely. One thing many people say is to use some kind of paper tissue and rub it over the buttons. This doesn't work too well, especially as the buttons are far apart. It might work if it were the X and O button like on the older arcade games. You can change the buttons in options if you wish but it is seriously not better. I do not recommend this technique as it's flawed and leaves tissue pieces all over the place. :) There are other techniques, and feel free to e-mail me if you get good results. You MUST have a good controller to play this, but you might refrain from using the best one you have. I have a couple of 2nd hand pads and they lack button sensitivity. The buttons must be smooth and easy to tap, if they are hard and take some effort to press down, they are not ideal for this game. 3rd party controllers and fake Sony ones are usually bad. Dual shock pads are not recommended, because the analog sticks are in the way, and the pad is much much heavier. The shock mode isn't entirely useful or annoying, if you do chose to play with one, you might as well have the shock mode on. The vibrations do not occur within the running/swimming/etc part of events. [meKuZo adds:] For the technique i would suggest the r1 and the r2 button for jump1 and 2 and the triangle and the square (my friends prefer triangle and circle) for the run buttons. you can bash the run buttons with your thumbs very fast and it also allows you to push the jump-buttons because there are some events where both is important at the same time (like hammer throw or javelin) By this way you will not lose power by pushing the jump-buttons! And i use the dual shock 2- controller for this game due to its weight! =) Hold the controller with the right hand (as usual) with the thumb on the triangle and the second and the third finger on the R buttons. With the left hand you "go over the" controller this will mean the most part of the hand is located in the area between the two L-buttons and the two R-buttons and the ends of all four fingers are on the back of the controller. With two fingers you will "surround" the cable of the controller and with the thumb you press the square button! This one will work much better than the square - circle method!=) [End] ============================================================================= 03.) MAIN MENU G0300 ============================================================================= The Main Menu is simple: 3 Options to choose from, 4 if you have loaded any records or made one in the current session. First we have Arcade Mode, a total of 12 events you need to take part in and gain the most points against 3 other athletes. Second there is Challenge Mode, you can try to break a record for any event. Third option is only visible if you have broken any records. Replay Mode lets you watch it over and over again until you are sick and tired of it. =) Lastly, Options lets you change many things such as Difficulty Level. This is obviously very important. More info is in an upcoming section (Options). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLAYER PROFILE G0310 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Under Player Profile you can enter your name and chose the country you wish to represent. There are 12 countries to chose from when playing IT&F. The country you chose does NOT affect how they do well in each discipline. Each country has the same chance in winning or losing according to YOUR skill. When you select the country of your choice, you get to enter a name. If you press START it will input the default name of PlayerX (x being the slot of your controller 1-4). When you have chosen your country with START or X, input your name. Scroll through A->Z + special ASCII by going Left and Right on your controller. After each character press X to go to the next one, and finally START to finish the name. The flashing characters do not count towards your name and once you press START they will disappear. If you press START too early the name gets defaulted to PlayerX or just the part you had written. Press O to go back if you made any mistakes. =============================================================================== 04.) OPTION MENU G0400 =============================================================================== Options are for altering the game settings. The following options are available with a description what they do exactly: Exit: Go back to the main menu. Level: This is the most important setting. Options are Easy, Medium or Hard. Choose easy if you are a beginner but even I play on easy because some events have a high qualification mark. This does not affect anything else like running or throwing. The opponents will be tougher on a higher level and the qualification requirements for events is steeper. If you are playing multiplayer, it won't affect the other players, but Sprint is very very tough against the computer on hard. If you fail an event in Arcade you'll need to re-do it until you qualify. In events such as Sprint it might take you very long to beat the AI. Points are also not skill level dependent. The results of the AI also depends on the current record. If the record is high, they might end up getting close to that, but not breaking it. E.g. If the weightlifting record is 270.0kg then they might only lift around 267kg, but if it's 290.0kg they will possible increase their performance by a lot. This is not always the case, especially for simultaneous events such as 100m or Swimming. Memory Card: Load, Compare Load and Save. The game lacks an important auto-save option. Each time you start it'll automatically load your records from the memory card. If you have played the game some and beaten any records, use Compare Load so the game checks if the records on the memory card are better. If one is not, the new one from the current session will be kept. This can also be used to load different results from different memory cards into the game, and save it in one card. All those combined records can be saved onto the memory card but it required a hefty 4 slots. The icon on the memory card features a cute blue runner in the start position. Shame they didn't make 4 different ones. Key: 2 running keys and 2 'jumping' keys. Jumping keys are essentially Action keys in each events. You can change the layout of your keys to anything you prefer. I personally use the default layout, have tried some variations but it didn't make anything better. I guess all depends on the style you button-bash. Audio: The sound of IT&F is funky indeed. You can select Mono/Stereo, alter the BGM (background music) and SE (sound effects) volumes. Screen: Center the screen to fit your TV. Don't forget to save this afterwards. Vibration: If you do use a dual shock controller (although not recommended), you can choose to have vibrations on or off. It might be fun to try this but generally it should be off and those large sticks are very bad for button bashing. Try to find an old controller without them, and not broken at that (it might be if you play too much!). Many events will easily be thrown off my the vibrations, such as the canoeing. =============================================================================== 05.) EVENTS G0500 =============================================================================== The fun part of the guide: the events. There are 12 events in total. Not all are part of Track & Field or Athletics but are part of the Olympics. For all events I will assume you didn't alter the default buttons. Pressing START during any event will pause the game and bring up the menu. You can go back to the game, select a different event (not in arcade) or quit the current mode. You can't quit the game while on the event screen, simply enter an event and go to the menu and select 'Quit Arcade/Challenge/Replay' and the game will take you back to the main menu. In each event you can gain points, they are only useful in Arcade mode. I have included a point chart in this guide, if I collect enough data I might be able to work out the conversion rate. Sprint points are fixed as you can only be placed 1st -> 4th. It does not matter which difficulty you play, you will gain the same amount of points each time. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 100M G0501 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Men's Athletics 100 Meters `````````````````````````` A quick, easy and usually painless dash to the finish line. The game will take some time to announce the lanes, you can skip that with the START button. The main part is getting a great start and then get that pace up, you should be at top speed for the entire race. Remember the technique talks about holding your breath, if you race faster you'll also need to hold your breath for a shorter amount of time. While this is one of the most basic events, you still have one more action to remember. Just before the finish line you can press the Action button to dip your head. While this might look insignificant at first, this could possible shave off a couple of milliseconds in the end. Advanced runners should use this, and you'll see the result. If you are still having trouble getting the running faster then don't bother, however, if you aren't running at full speed it would be easier to dip as the button change isn't too hard. Keep in mind, 2 fault starts and you are out. The default record is very weak and you should beat it in no time. The AI also hardly ever gets better times than that. A good chance to rake in some points in Arcade mode and gain an early advantage. A great time is around 8.5 seconds or better, but a time below 9sec already gives lots of points. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Long Jump G0502 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Men's Athletics Long Jump ````````````````````````` The long jump is one fun event. It contains some moderate running and easy action. Press a run button to make the guy start, otherwise you'll run out of time and fail the attempt. I think you have around 15 seconds to begin. First you want to start running as fast as possible. Once your runner gets to the jump mark, the closer you get really depends if you have been running steadily, the game will slow down and the angle display comes up. Now it's your turn to press and hold an action key until it reaches 45°. Anything in the orange area will be sufficient, but 45° is the optimum. The distance you jump will depend on a few things. 1. The pace you were running at while on the short track. 2. The speed you were at when hitting the jump pad. 3. The position on the jump pad, too far means wasting precious cm. 4. The angle you are jumping at. AND 5. Pressing the action button just before you land to make a better landing. This will make sure you land in a sitting position rather than fall into the sand. It will improve your jump by a lot so don't forget that. Additionally, if you were running faster during your run-up and then slow down towards the end, the jump will be a lot worse as if you only speed up to your fastest speed. Try to pace the run so you have the fastest speed at the end, experienced players should try to keep the pace up at all times of course, without a dip in performance. If you hit the blue mark at the jump you failed the attempt. It will say 'Fault' and zoom to the jump pad where you can see how much you stepped over by. You should beat the default record easily, good jumps are outside the measured area. Not sure why they made the sandbox so short, excellent jumps can make it out. And don't be surprised if you see a mole or two (see Easter Eggs for more details). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pole Vault G0503 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Men's Athletics Pole Vault `````````````````````````` Fun event, adds a new twist to the angle. It's similar to Long Jump but in this case you have a Tension gauge. First you need to enter the height you want to attempt. You can't go lower than the previous attempt, even if you failed. Try something realistic first to get a good result, a daring height with the last perhaps. On this screen, you can press right and left on your controller to see how the other athletes are doing on theirs which might help you decide how much you want to attempt. Press the run button so the camera angle swings around, you have around 15 seconds to start the attempt or you fail the try. Run at full speed just like before, making sure the speed is still high at the end of the run. Once your jumper has lodged the pole into the ground you can let go off the running and the tension gauge will start to fill while he starts rising into the air. When the tension bar is full, press the action button and the jumper will jump far into the air. When he's at the top of his jump, press the action button again so he will jump over the bar to the other side. Sounds silly and looks a little strange with all the slow motion going on, but it's rather easy once you get the hang of it. I find that I often press the action button twice by accident - or keep it pressed down too long. The record is very low, you should aim at >6.50m. You'll know how much higher you can go by the gaps your jumper has when he goes over. The maximum seems to be 7.00m, but it's not really. Once you have cleared 7.00m you can go as high as 8.00 meters. I know this because I've done so myself. If you are going for a record, try to clear 7.00m at the first attempt so you can raise the bar for the other 2. I believe 8m is possible, it could also be possible to raise the bar over 8.00 meters if it has been jumped on attempt 1/2. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hammer Throw G0504 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Men's Athletics Hammer Throw ```````````````````````````` This one is tough and tiring. Gain power with the power buttons, max if you can. At the same time look out for the circle that goes around the athlete. It is the direction you will be throwing. However, you need to plan ahead as inputting the angle will take you another half a second or so. Therefore you want to start pressing the angle button when the direction is around the right side of him. This depends on your power though, so if you are slow then the circle won't turn around you as quickly, and you need to have the direction adjusted accordingly. Get the angle at around 45 degrees for best results. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Javelin Throw G0505 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Men's Athletics Javelin Throw ````````````````````````````` This event is fun, rewarding and easy to pull off. There is a 20 seconds time limit to start running. Bash the buttons up to the top and leave it there until you get close to the throwing line. Make sure the speed is max at all times for a great result. Use the action button to throw the javelin by keeping it pressed and throw at a 45 degree angle, or at least as close to that as you can. AFTER you have released the javelin, press an angle key to "shout", which should add a few more centimeter. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Weightlifting G0506 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Men's Weightlifting Clean & Jerk ```````````````````````````````` At the start you get to chose how much weight you'll want to lift. Remember that you can't go lower once you attempted a heavier load. You only get three attempts so get some points with your first and try something hard with the last one. If you press right or left you can see the other athlete's score. Now to the actual event, it has three parts. First the Jerk, you'll need to lift the weight onto your shoulders. Do this by powering up the Power up to the top (OK). Once the speed has reached the highest point it will quickly drop to 0. Your task is to press the Action button before it reaches 0, but not before you reach the highest point or your lifter will also not do a Jerk. The speed at how fast this drops to zero depends on the weight you are lifting. If done correctly, your guy will lift the weights and the vitality bar will start to drop. The vitality bar's rate of decline matters only about how much you are lifting, and not on which part of the speed bar you managed to stop it before it went to 0. There is a 10 second time limit on your Jerk attempt by which time you need to have reached the OK and pressed the Action button. If time runs out, you fail. Second part is the timing. When your guy has positioning himself for a Clean, the timing gauge will fill up and go back to 0. You don't need to hit the OK at the first time it reaches it, but it would be wise considering your vitality gauge is dropping quickly, especially at heavy weights. If you hit the OK, it will light up and your lifter will start the Clean. After a few seconds you'll start the actual Clean. Lastly, you'll need to light the 3 red Fin. lights. Do so by bashing the run buttons as fast as possible so it reaches Keep. Each light takes 1 second to flash up. You can lose a red light if you lose the Keep for around 1 second, and you must light them up all before your vitality is gone. I personally think this is the easier part until the really heavy stuff. [meKuZo writes:] Once you lift 300.0kg you can try to lift as much as 335kg for the next attempt(s). 300kg is already very very tough, his current record is 302.5kg and any extra weight makes the Clean a living hell. [End] I can confirm this, the maximum possible is 335.0kg, and it is incredibly hard to do 300.0kg already, having only 1/2 attempts for the next step is not nice at all for trying to break the high records. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Springboard G0507 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Women's 3m Springboard Diving ````````````````````````````` Trick Difficulty Highest Score Possible Forward-Tuck A 3.5 105.00 Forward-Pike A 3.8 114.00 Back----Tuck B 4.1 123.00 Back----Pike C 4.3 129.00 Reverse-Tuck B 4.0 120.00 Reverse-Pike D 4.2 126.00 Inward--Tuck B 4.0 120.00 Inward--Pike C 3.7 111.00 If you don't make enough rings the difficulty will be lowered accordingly. In other words, even with a perfect entry you will get 10s, but if the dive was not completed the maximum score is not as high as seen in the table. For example only one somersault on a C Back-Pike has difficulty 1.6 instead. Maximum points in this jump would therefore only be 54.00. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 50m Freestyle G0508 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Women's 50m Freestyle Swimming `````````````````````````````` This is essentially the same as the 100m running but 2-2.5x longer. Once the announcer says 'Set' get ready to speed off. At the buzzer you'll need to just bash those buttons until the finish line. Just before the end, roughly after you have passed the T-junction on the pool floor, you can press the Action button to dash to the end, this will save quite a lot of time. You are allowed one false start, not like the current swimming rules. The hardest part is keeping the speed up for so long, there isn't much else you need to know here. A good time is around 22.5 seconds. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Horse Vault G0509 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Women's Gymnastics Horse Vault `````````````````````````````` The anti-button bashing event. Here you must get a combination of keys correct to get the highest score. You should be familiar with this from Konami's Dance Dance revolution, Beatmania etc. You have 2 attempts, the total score is the average of both jumps. The jumps have different difficulty ratings. In the list, "Symbol" shows you the kind of trick the girl will make. Difficulty itself is the highest point you can achieve for a jump. After you have selected your trick, the girl will start her run automatically and you will need to get ready. When she reaches the trampoline you'll need to press any of the 4 buttons (X, O, /_\ or []) to jump and then again to jump off the horse vault. All this time you have a small bar at the bottom and a yellow marker which represents your gymnast. Look at this bar in order to see when you'll need to jump each time. You get a 'Best', 'Good' or 'Miss' for your attempt. After the 2 jumps you'll need to input the actual command. This command is made up from the four buttons described above. It varies each time, but the combination style is usually the same and has some sort of rhythm to it. The harder your trick, the more buttons you'll need to press in the combination. Once you have finished the input, the horse vault event is completed. You could aim for something around 9.800, it requires some practice to get this right, especially for the jumps. If the miss was very close to the actual line, you won't get as much taken off as if you don't bother pressing the button at all. Mistiming (i.e. 'Miss') a jump will take off a maximum of 0.550 from the total score. If you get a 'Good', you will only get penalized by around 0.025/0.020 instead. Not completing or inputting the wrong command lead to penalties. These vary for each trick, depending on the difficulty. If you are good enough to keep high speed throughout the 4 laps, you are godly. Anyway there isn't any strategy here, simply button bash for around 1 minute. You're arms are most likely tired soon. If you don't want to waste your energy, take it relatively easy throughout the event. I usually do this one last. At the end of the race you can get a tiny finishing boost by pressing the Action button. Hopefully you have passed the qualification time, because re-doing this event is no fun at all. See the cheats and tricks section for a tip on how to prevent this event tiring you out if you wish to play on some more. Just beware of ruining any real records and PBs. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sprint G0511 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Men's Cycling Sprint ```````````````````` First you get paired with another athlete to race a semi-final. Choose between a 1-set match or 3-set match (i.e. 2 out of 3), the winner will advance to the final and the loser will have to race for bronze with the other semi-final loser. To qualify you'll simply need to win one race, but for points you might want to win the first one and also the final. As for the actual race: One racer starts inside and can't be overtaken by the second racer until the 2nd lap. The game uses catch-up logic so you do not need to try extra hard to get closer to the front-runner. The action buttons allow you to go up and down on the track. You are fastest between the 2 lines near the inside naturally. A tactic against the computer is to go slowly until the final lap and then sprint towards the end. Don't forget about making a last second push when you get to the finish line, similar to the 100m and swimming events. Pitted against another human player is a lot more fun. Bluffing to sprint away and blocking paths will make the previous tactic useless, unless you think you can handle it and sprint through towards the finish line. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Canoeing G0512 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Men's Canoeing Kayak Singles 500 Meters ``````````````````````````````````````` This event is so relaxing you can do this anytime, especially when you just finished a tiresome event, or are about to do one next. The only thing I noticed happens to you is that your eyes focus onto one spot of the TV set, surely not healthy. Anyways, the event pits four canoes against each other. Wait for the start press the lit paddle button to start off. You will want to concentrate on your corresponding box at the bottom of the screen. The bar will fill up with each paddle. Press the appropriate key to paddle and continue doing so for the entire race. The aim is to get the gauge rising as far as possible but not hit the end. If you hit it to early or too late, the speed bar will grow in the background. The speed bar is the one behind the gauge. It is wide at first but gets slimmer when you gain speed, making it harder to hit the green target for fast paddling. If you have the rhythm correct you could possible get the best paddles out of this. At the end of the course you can also dash to the finish line, gaining a few milliseconds perhaps. meKuZo's fantastic record: 1.17.979 =============================================================================== 06.) ARCADE MODE G0600 =============================================================================== Arcade mode is sort of like a modern pentathlon but with different events. On the 'Select Event' screen you need to go through all 12 events and gain points by completing them as best as you can. You can tick of one event by beating the qualification mark, which is different for each difficulty level you select. Also the AI athletes will be slightly more competitive and even beat a few default world records. If you fail any event by not passing the qualification standard, you get the Continue Screen where you can choose to give up. You have unlimited tries so don't worry about failing. It's only going to make you more tired. This is not the same if you are playing with friend. If one of you passes the mark the game will ask the loser to continue and keep his original score. This might mean the score is very low and your overall total gets screwed up. If you get 'No Score' in an event such as Weightlifting or Pole Vault where you only get three attempt, you end up with 0 points. CHEATS & EASTER EGGS G1100 =============================================================================== Cheats: ``````` There are no working cheats for this game and I hope they never find any. If you alter any score with a gameshark, use a gameshark to have top speed, top score or top result I don't consider you a real gamer. I have also never tried to use an auto-fire controller to gain speed, so I don't know if it would possible gain anything. While this might save you some sweat, it defeats the entire purpose of the game. Unfortunately IT&F does not have some sort of advanced auto-fire checker like Metal Gear Solid used in the button- bashing part. I consider using a turbo controller as cheating, I hear you get funny glitches but I might try using it to get past those cycling events you need to finish for Arcade mode, and for filling in blanks on the point charts. One 'cheat' that works (more like a trick?) is that you can pause the game during any event and have a rest. This is indeed useful for long lasting button-bashing events such as 1km Time Trial, Sprint and possible 50m Freestyle. However, as you need to pause the game you might lose some speed and your end result won't be 'perfect cheating'. Alternatively, somebody else could pause the game with a second controller so you don't lose speed finding the START button. Then, start button-bashing and the other person will get the race underway again. You could get much much better results by pausing every 10 seconds or so, but it's not right and the record is tarnished. Don't save any records you can never truly beat or you'll kick yourself for the rest of your life. Alternate Costumes & Konami Man: ```````````````````````````````` At the events selection screen, highlight the event you wish to enter, then press Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, Circle, X. A sound will confirm correct entry and start the event. You have now changed the appearance of the female athletes and have the Konami Man appear in certain events. In the male events you'll see him fly around if you win. (?) Easter Eggs: ```````````` When doing a Long Jump, if you get all three digits matching e.g. 7.77m or 8.88m. A mole will pop out from the sand. This doesn't affect anything else. I have yet to find out if this works on 11.11m as well. During the 100m Dash, if you get the last 2 digits matching e.g. 10.22 you will see a blimp in the background of the score sheet. When doing the Javelin throw, run real fast but throw at an awful angle (~70°). If you got it right you'll hit a spacecraft. =============================================================================== 12.) FAQ G1200 =============================================================================== i) Does it matter which country I select? Again, no. It only affects you mentally if you think you are better by competing for a specific country. ^_^ ii) I'm better than one of your records, can I add my score to your page? Well, if you get a better result, tell me and possibly how many points you gained. Assuming you didn't cheat, I'll probably add a note to the event that somebody (i.e. YOU) has been able to stretch the record this far. If there is demand for a huge Individual PB table, somebody should make an Indepth-FAQ just for that. Not sure if GameFAQ would like that kind of a guide, try a personal website ;) iii) How do I exit the game while on the Select Event screen? You can't, you'll have to select an event first and then press START, then pick "Quit" from the menu. iv) You could be making up those records of yours!? Hmm I guess I could, but why would I? I have the records on my memory card and for new records (which is most of them) I also know the points it gained. While I could be making this up too and guess from the charts, it doesn't follow a 100% accurate and if somebody would equal a record and get another result, uh oh :) v) I have some data for your point charts, do you want to add them? REVIEW GYY00 ============================================================================= This was the first Track & Field game I had ever played. I have seen people play similar button bashing games in the arcade before but never tried them myself. I wasn't even sure what to expect but the reviews at the time were favorable so I placed the disc into my PS and once it was in, it stayed there for the next few days (or at least until my arms hurt too much). Gameplay: 10/10 The heart of this game is gameplay. The PS was already getting old and dated but games like this don't need to rely on graphics to deliver. Gameplay of IT&F2000 is spot on and never fails anywhere. Some events could have been altered, some maybe exchanged with better ones like the N64 one has but there are plenty to have fun with. The only downside of this is having to play all of them in Arcade mode, including the less fun ones. The controls are so simple and yet do so much, it's amazing. Sound: 9/10 That event select beat will stay in your head for a while. I also like the accurate announcer, it's sufficient enough. There are lots of sound effects that are really fun, the seal sound when the weightlifters fail an attempt or the 100m runners make a false start. The sound never feels annoying or boring and all the grunts, athlete noises and announcers are spot on. Graphics: 8/10 Ye good olde Playstation 1 graphics. They were great a few years ago but now obviously look dated. Yet the game boasts very decent animation and vivid colo(u)rs all around. A few improvements on the characters could be nice but not at the expense of frames per second or other loading times. The game loads very quickly at all times so one shouldn't complain too much. Overall: 10/10 Don't be fooled by the not-so-perfect scores for sound and graphics, this game is all about gameplay and the pretty good sounds and animated characters add nicely to the overall game. This game is highly recommended as a multiplayer game, but even for single player it can be highly addictive. Too bad there isn't any true sequel yet and with today's games all looking into 3D-shooting to make a quick buck there probably never will be. I was quite disappointing with the PS2 outing of T&F. Perhaps the next-gen consoles will get an updated version with awesome gameplay. ============================================================================= ZZ.)
