実況パワフルプロ野球 4 Jikkyō Pawafuru Pro Yakyū 4 Live Powerful Pro Baseball 4 Contents 1.Introduction 2.Manual Translation 3.Success Mode Walkthrough 1.Introduction This is the 4th game in the Powerful Pro Baseball series which began on the Super Famicom in 1994. The game requires 112 pages to save. It sold around 180,000 copies at release, much less than the later PS1 game (480,000 copies). As a Brit I know nothing about Baseball, so please forgive any errors in terms I may make. It's even possible that some cricket terminology might accidentally slip in instead, sorry gov'ner. Because this game is so similar to others in the series, the manual is almost identical. So if you have played any of the other games feel free to skip parts you are already familiar with. This game bought the series into 3D and introduced the Success Mode, a story mode that is still included in the series to this day. The British publication, N64 magazine, reviewed the game, giving it 54 percent. But as a British magazine, they were usually more interested in football games. I would like to thank Ozidual. Without his hard work, this guide would not have been possible. He has been tirelessly scanning and uploading Japanese N64 game manuals at extremely high quality. He is also assisting in many N64 translation projects and fixed the trophy glitch in Space Station Silicon Valley. I am very grateful for your efforts towards preserving video game history. Back of the Box 2.Manual Translation The No.1 most complete! The baseball game with the No.1 sense of ambiance! Heat up again this year with Powerful Pros! The players in this game are based on the data of the players of the 96 series. Please understand that there are no foreign players available in this game. Powerful Pro Rules The basic rules are the same as normal baseball but with a few exceptions as written below. Ties In the Central League Pennant Race and Success Mode, rematches will occur until a definitive result. Cold Games If a certain difference in points occurs, the game will be decided. Normally this only occurs in conditions such as rainy weather. In this game, the cold game point difference can be adjusted. Designated Hitter System In place of the pitcher an appointed batting specialist may be used in the Pacific League. In this game, when you choose your team, you can decide if you want to use this system in the Pacific League. Controls This game uses the 3D Stick and the D Pad. To beat this mode you must be promoted to the first string player rank. You do this by raising your appraisal ranking with coach Iwata (岩田). When he thinks you are a good enough player you will be promoted and win the game. You need 112 pages needed to save your data for Success Mode. I have based this guide on the wonderful RTA speed run video by Soregashi ( 某(それがし)) on Nico Nico video. It contains a lot of detailed information about the game mechanics that must taken a very long time to research. However the video is completely in Japanese and features a lot of reaction images from the Japanese adult movie A Midsummer Night's Lewd Dream, which is a source of memes on the Japanese internet. So, please bare that in mind if you go looking for the video. Soregashi completes the game in 11 minutes I believe you only have three years in which to win a promotion, and each in game action uses up one week. This means if you are injured you are very likely to lose a lot of time as well as a lot of ability points and the opinion of your coaches. For this reason, if you get any kind of injury its best to simply restart the game. As many random events can cause you to get an injury, this makes the game extremely difficult. Good effects are written in blue coloured text and bad effects are written in red. The word of injury in Japanese is けが or ケガ depending on the writing system. So when you see that word in red, it is time to reset your N64 and start the game from the beginning! For example you may choose to rest at home after a hard practice, your well meaning team mate will then come over and give you some chocolate which will cause you to get a tooth ache. This tooth ache will then prevent you from practising properly and you will keep losing ability points and your in game play will be effected. If you try to recover from the tooth ache you will end up losing a lot of in game time as a result. At the start of the game you will be given several options to define your character. In this order; Your name – Anything is ok The team you will join – Anyone is ok Position – Any position but Pitcher – Soregashi chooses 捕手 Catcher Your origin – Anything is ok (younger means more stamina, older means better control) Hobby – Anything is ok (changes what presents you get) What you call yourself – Anything is ok Your body type – Anything is ok – Soregashi chooses おまかせ or “I'll leave it up to the game” Basically you can mash A to get through this menu but make sure you choose 捕手 as your position. At the start of the game you will be assigned either one of four in-game girlfriends or you will be single. If you have a girlfriend she will ask you about the future of your relationship as you join the baseball team. Amusingly it is most effective to choose to break up with her at this point (the 2nd option and then the 2nd option again) because this gives you a boost to your motivation as your character decide to focus only on baseball. Its possible that your character will sometimes feel depressed at being 19 and single, but it is highly likely that your girlfriend will break up with you anyway because you wont have time to call her during the strict practice regime that is necessary to beat the game. If you want to keep your girlfriend make sure you call her a lot and go on dates with her as soon as she asks. If you break up with her you can find a new girlfriend if you call your team mate and go out for a walk in the park with him. All the girlfriends in the game are basically the same, except for the movies they like and the gifts that they give you. After the conversation with your girlfriend (if you had one) you will move to the Success Mode screen. The current month is February (2月) which is shown on the left hand side along with the week and year number. This month our aim to training up to avoid an injury. In the top left of the screen your face and a smily face are displayed. Your face represents your current health/stamina and the smily face represents your motivation. If you are tired then you are more likely to get injured. If you lack motivation you are likely to develop insomnia and other health problems. To recover stamina you have to rest at home (First Aid Box, then the first option on the left.) To recover motivation you have to do your hobby (First Aid Box, then the second option). You can also recover stamina and motivation from other random events and by calling your family/teammates. However resting at home is least likely to cause random events which may be bad for you. So your first action should be to choose the training option on the main screen (the first on the left) and then choose to jog around the pitch (the 4th option). This raises your reputation with the coaches and is least likely to cause you to suffer an injury. After doing this your character will more than likely be tired which will be shown by their expression in the top left. You should immediately rest at home. Repeat this pattern until March (3月). You are likely to get some random events in this time, usually your team mates taking to you. You can select the first option without worry as this is the best option most of the time. The only exception is if one of your team mates asks if you have girl friend (彼女いますか). In this case you should say no (the second option) because he will then take you out on the town to cheer you up which will raise your motivation. But don't worry too much if you accidentally lie to him. When March arrives start dashing around the pitch (the 3rd option on the training screen) and also train your batting skill (the 1st option) twice so that you can hit the ball harder in the games. Make sure you keep resting after every training session because, while dashing raises your reputation stats much faster you are also much more likely to be injured by doing it. Do this until your coach decides to put you in a game, which he should very quickly. Once you are in the game you don't need to dash any more. So do your best in the games and just keep up your routine of jogging and resting at home. Once you have been picked for one game you will probably keep getting picked, unless you get an injury in which case you may as well reset. If you have not played the main game yet, the actual baseball games might be quite difficult. Basically when the pitcher throws the ball you have to line up your yellow reticle to the black and white cross that appears on the screen and then hit the A Button to swing at the right time. This can be very difficult, especially because your player has under leveled stats. (All he has been doing is running around the pitch for two months lol). Even if you do hit the ball you are likely to be caught out, but don't give up. If the pitcher throws the ball but then an exclamation mark appears near them don't swing for the ball because it's probably going to be a foul. Depending on your performance in the game the coaches opinion ratings of you will rise, so you need to do your best each time you are selected to play. Getting struck out on all your turns at the base is the worst possible result. Hitting the ball but being caught out is not good. Getting to first base each game is good enough to beat the story mode. Hitting a home run must be even better, but I never managed that myself. So you only need to get to first base a few times each game, and if you help some of your team mates score some runs, that's even better. If your playing is really bad, you might want to consider resetting because the longer you play badly the more time you will need to make up for. In his playthrough Soregashi played ok in 3 games and was promoted to first string player in less than a year. I cleared the game in the second year after suffering a bout of insomnia and a few bad games. Keep running, resting, and playing well in games and eventually Coach Iwata will promote you to first string and you will get to see your character on the front page of the newspaper, indicating you have cleared Success Mode. I feel like the way in which you have to go about winning this mode (intentionally?) says something about pro-baseball and the Japanese work ethic in general. You don't have to be a good player, you just need to flatter you old man coach, and look like you are putting a lot of effort in by jogging around the track every day. Well perhaps this is just the quickest and effective way of winning the game, but there really is no point trying to actually level up your baseball skills it seems. New Game plus If you complete a game put your cursor on the second file and then select the erase file option and press the A and B buttons at the same time to start a new game. Enter any name and then choose the manual growth type (any other player options are ok). If you do this you will start the game with all the stats and secret skills and relationship points with your girl friend that you had from the first time through.
