I've been putting off updating for a LONG time, but, due to the holiday season, I've finally updated the FAQ with all the new information I've received since June. (By that, I mean I've put in the two new 'shrooms stated above.) Version 1.5: June 19, 2005 A new Mushroom for Tall, Tall Mountain added. Version 1.4: May 7, 2005 An alternate method for Cool, Cool Mountain's third 1-Up is up. Version 1.3: April 28, 2005 A new question added to the FAQ and the 1-Up count now updated to 112. Not much else changed, though. Version 1.2: April 17, 2005 A few things changed, and a new ASCII up. I find it better than the last one. Otherwise, not much of an update, and no new 1-Ups. Version 1.1: April 14, 2005 Some very minor changes done, but nothing too great. Two 1-Ups added, some stuff fixed but once again, not too much changed. A new question added to the FAQ section, though. Version 1.0: April 13, 2005 First version of the FAQ. sleep_mode is helping me a TON with this, but I feel it may not be complete, so if we missed any, please contact us. Information is in the final section of the FAQ. *************** 2. Introduction *************** Welcome to the Super Mario 64 DS 1-Ups FAQ! This is my, Mike Shay's (Mike OShay on the boards) first ever FAQ. This FAQ will tell you the locations of every 1- up mushroom in the game and will even tell you how to get them and some 1-ups that can be obtained without getting any mushrooms. There are many questions on the SM64DS board on www.GameFAQs.com on how to get 1-ups quickly, and I plan to finally be able to reply with "in the FAQs!". I hope you enjoy this FAQ, as me and sleep_mode have worked very hard on it. ************************************************ 3. 1-Up Mushroom Locations In the 15 Main Stages ************************************************ ============================= Course 1: Bob-Omb Battlefield ============================= 1-Up count: 3 1st 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): After you enter the level, just keep walking straight. Go up the bridge, over the fence, and head over to the area near the cannon. Climb the tree on the right side of the cannon, and a 1-Up will appear. It is one that will chase you around, so you don't need to worry about grabbing it before it disappears. 2nd 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Enter the level, and head over to the cannon from the left of where you start. You should see a circle of coins around a flower bed near the cannon. After you collect all of the coins in the circle, a 1-Up will appear out of the middle of the flowers. You will have to pick it up before it disappears. 3rd 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): On the left side of the fence near the area of the 2nd 1-Up, the ground forms a slant downwards. Go down that hill, and you will find a Bob-Omb, a red coin, a ! Switch, and a 1-Up. Walk over top of the 1-Up, and it's yours. ========================== Course 2: Whomp's Fortress ========================== 1-Up count: 6 1st 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-2): Head up to the area near the two Thwomps that are pounding the ground. Once you get to the area with a ?Block and two boxes, punch the box that is closer to you. A 1-Up will pop out, and you should easily be able to grab it. 2nd 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-2): When you enter the Course, start forward and right. (If you see two Goombas and two wooden posts, then you are going in the right direction.) Continue to head forward, jumping over the fence and the gap. You may also kill the Piranha Plant if you wish. Now, just punch the block behind the flowers, and the 1-Up is yours! 3rd 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Climb half way up the castle, where you should see two Piranha Plants, and a rotating board. Jump on the rotating board, and collect the five coins to make a 1-Up appear. Note: This 1-Up is nearly impossible to get, so don't be surprised if it disappears before you collect it. 4th 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Proceed past the rotating board, and jump over the fence toward the two Goombas and the pole. Climb all the way to the top of the pole, and a 1-Up mushroom will appear. It will chase you, so you don't need to rush away trying to grab it. 5th 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 2-7): Climb to the top of the castle, but don't get on top of the tower. Instead, walk around the tower, and you will notice an octagonal shape. Now, stand in front of the side that is across from the giant pole, and punch in the middle of the wall. It will break, and a 1-Up mushroom will be revealed. 6th 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Go to the area you saw in the second 1-Up location and you'll see two flower patches. Walk around between them, and you should see a group of three butterflies appear. One of them can be destroyed (by kicking, punching, jumping on, walking into, walking on, etc.) and will turn into a 1-Up Mushroom. ========================= Course 3: Jolly Roger Bay ========================= 1-Up count: 2 1st 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Enter the level, and jump straight into the cannon. Move the crosshair down and left so the three vertical spikes appear in view. Aim your crosshair so you will hit the top of the middle spike and fire. If you manage to grab on, climb all the way to the top, do a handstand, and you are the proud owner of another 1-Up. 1st 1-Up (alternate method) (obtainable on: Stars 2-7): As an alternate way to get the 1-Up, get on top of the ship as Luigi, backflip to the ledge with the star on it, and backflip over to the spike. 2nd 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Go to the area where the (sunken) ship is, and start swimming toward the underwater tunnel connecting the two sections of the level. Swim through the middle of the coin circle in front of the tunnel and a 1-Up will appear. ============================= Course 4: Cool, Cool Mountain ============================= 1-Up count: 6 1-2nd 1-Ups (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): After entering the level, you should see a cabin with a hole in the chimney. Jump into the chimney, and you will end up in a slide. Go down the slide until you see a row of coins leading up to a wall. Aiming at the wall, collect the row of coins, and you should pass through the wall. Inside the shortcut you just entered are two 1-Up mushrooms. 3rd 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): In the same shortcut used for the previous 1-Ups, hold up on the D-pad when you get to the end of the tunnel, and you should fly off and land on a ledge. Walk to the right, and get the 1-Up out of the yellow ! Block while you are still standing on the ledge. 3rd 1-Up (alternate method) (obtainable on: Stars 1-7):Instead of having to do the shortcut (which is easily the better and safer option), you could use Mario to wall jump up to the secret area in the cabin after you finish the slide normally. (This alternate method submitted by Mario Maniac.) 4th 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Enter the level, run past the trees, and start sliding down the mountain. When you get to the second row of five coins, jump over the right fence, and you should land on a ledge sticking out of the mountain. On this ledge, you will find a red coin, a campfire, and a yellow 1-Up box. After getting the 1-Up, go to either side of the ledge, jump off, and you should land on solid ground. 5th 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Slide down the mountain until you get to the bridge with the two snowmen jumping on it. On the right, there should be an area with lots of trees, and a cannon. Climb to the top of the tree closest to the Snowman's Head, and a 1-Up should appear. 6th 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): While you are still on the same section with the trees, walk back toward the direction that you came down the slide. When you get to the end, you should see a yellow ! Block. Hit it, and you now have your 6th 1-Up of the level. ========================= Course 5: Big Boo's Haunt ========================= 1-Up count: 3 1st 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Turn around from where you start, and you will be facing a shed. Go to the right side of the shed, stand on top of the blocks, and triple jump onto the roof. If you are using Luigi, you can do a backflip instead of a triple jump. Walk toward the back of the roof, and grab the 1-Up. 2nd 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Get on the mansion's balcony, and kill the Big Boo if you wish. Now, either use Luigi's backflip or Mario's balloon ability to get onto the part of the roof with the star on it. Go past the star, and get the 1-Up out of the yellow ! Block. Don't get the star quite yet, though, as there is one more 1-Up to get. 3rd 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): From the spot of the previous 1-Up, either double or triple jump onto the very top of the mansion, being careful not to fall off the back. Collect the row of five coins, and a 1-Up will appear. Now you can either get the Big Boo's Balcony star, or exit the level. ======================== Course 6: Hazy Maze Cave ======================== 1-Up count: 3 1st 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): From the beginning, go left and long-jump across the pit to the door. Go through the door and make your way around to where the boulders are falling from. Turn right and you'll see a door, in a little area surrounded by two walls. As Luigi, backflip (or as Mario, wall- jump) to the top of the wall in the direction the boulders are falling. Go to the middle of the little area on top of it and a 1-Up Mushroom will appear. 2nd 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Jump off the platform you were just on and go into the door. Walk further into the room and destroy the ! Block to get another 1-Up Mushroom. 3rd 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): From the room in Mushroom 1, go into the other door. Not the door you entered from, or the door from Mushroom 2, but the door you should've passed on the way. Go down the elevator, forwards, then through the door, to your left, and down the hole. Make note of the map on the bottom screen. Find a path to the corridor that leads back to the boulder room. Make your way through the maze to the area with the door leading to the boulder room. Go down the hall and up the elevator, then through the door you see in front of you. Go forwards and double-jump (triple-jump if you have to) so that you're holding onto the grated roof. Follow the left path to the floating island with the ! Block. Destroy the block and take your 1-Up Mushroom. 3rd 1-Up (alternate method) (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): As an alternate way to get the 3rd 1-Up, as Luigi go to the door of the third Mushroom and turn the screen to face the black block. Making sure you're Luigi, touch the wall where it's diagonal a bit ahead of the door, and turn to face away from the hole in the cavern. Backflip, and with luck, you'll grab onto the platform. This way can save you much time, but will probably take a few tries to get Luigi to grab the platform. Destroy the ! Block and you'll get the 1-Up Mushroom. ========================== Course 7: Lethal Lava Land ========================== 1-Up count: 9 1st 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Enter the level, and head over to the circle area around the volcano. You should see a black box spewing fire, and the box should have a 1-Up on top of it. Jump on top of the fire-spewer, and the 1-Up should be yours. 2nd 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Once you get past Bowser puzzle, you will see a spinning platform with two constant fire-spewers attached to the middle. Jump near the middle of the platform, get hit by the fire, and while you're on fire, run around the platform in a clockwise direction. It's possible to avoid the damage by using Luigi or Wario's Power Flower abilities. A 1-Up will appear, and you'll have to jump on top of the middle part to grab it. 3rd 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): To get this 1-Up, you must first enter the volcano by jumping into the center of it. When you're in the volcano, turn around, and jump on checkered platform. Jump from this platform to the next one, then jump from that platform to the floating pole. Climb to the top, and jump onto the little island. You will see a 1-Up, so now you just have to grab it. NOTE: If you are playing as Luigi, then don't jump off quite yet. 4th 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): If you are playing as Luigi, you can backflip from the spot of the previous 1-Up and land on the platform with the heart on it as a shortcut. if you aren't, then enter the volcano, and start climbing. Go all the way past the heart and the "lavafall" (waterfall with lava) until you get to the pole. Do a handstand on the top, and the 1-Up will appear. 5th 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7, although it's suggested that you get it on Stars 5-7, because the shell is available): Jump past the large gap, hit the ! Block, and get on the shell that comes out of it. While you're on the shell, ride all the way to the back of the platform that the star appears on when you beat the Big Bully. Grab the 1-Up, being careful not to hit the edge of the platform, or you will lose the shell and get burnt! 6-9th 1-Ups (obtainable on: Stars 1-7, although it's suggested that you get them on Stars 5-7, because the shell is available): Grab the shell, and start surfing around the Course. You should eventually find two 1-Ups on "hills", and two 1-Ups on C-shaped sections. NOTE: On 1-Ups 5-9, you can also get to them with Luigi's backflip, but it's very likely that you will get burnt. ============================ Course 8: Shifting Sand Land ============================ 1-Up count: 6 1st 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Start the level and go forward until you reach a hole filled with quicksand. You'll notice a 1-up above it. A few ways to get this 1-Up are long-jumping across the quicksand, backflipping over it as Luigi, flying to get it with Mario, getting it while Shell-Surfing, Eating with Yoshi's tongue, etc. 2nd 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): From the quicksand, go over the pile of sand nearby, and you'll see another 1-Up Mushroom blocked off by two other quicksand holes. Go across and jump over the spot between the holes or run over it or find some way to get over to the 1-Up Mushroom. You'll have to be quick, as a tornado will sweep you up if you take too long. 3rd 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Go around to where the Tox Boxes are, and go through the maze. At the end, you'll see a Bob-Omb Buddy near a small desert oasis with a little pond and a palm tree. Climb to the top of the tree and a 1- up will appear. 4th 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Go around to the entrance of the pyramid, but don't enter yet! Instead, go to the right and destroy the ! Block for another 1-Up Mushroom. 5th 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Enter the pyramid and make a left turn. Go forwards, then right, and you'll see a Thwomp-like Mummy enemy bouncing up and down. Get on top of him, and just wait. He'll bounce you right into a floating 1-Up Mushroom. 6th 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Find your way up to the second floor of the pyramid, and you should see a corner where there's a ring of coins under a grated surface you can grab onto, and a 1-Up Mushroom on top of it. I've found that it's easiest to get there by backflipping from the 2nd-floor platform underneath part of it. ========================== Course 9: Dire, Dire Docks ========================== 1-Up count: 1 1st 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Enter the level, and swim down to the bottom of the water mass. You should see one of those clams that open and close when you get near them. Swim over to it, and when it opens up, swim through the bottom part of it. You'll now have a shiny new 1-Up. ========================= Course 10: Snowman's Land ========================= 1-Up count: 4 1st 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Make your way across to the opposite side of the level that you start from (between the Ice Bully platform and the ice- cold lake) And you'll see an area with some Spindrifts, a Money Bags disguised to look like a coin, and a ! Block. Destroy the block, and you'll receive your 1-Up. 2nd 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Follow the trail up the Snowman and use one of the main methods (the head of the Penguin or using Luigi's backflip) to bypass the wind the Snowman blows. Get on top of his head and climb up the tree. Once near the top, you'll receive your 1-Up! 3rd 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Jump down part of the Snowman (or use the cannon if you've already gone off him) to the little fenced-area with the small igloo. Crouch and enter the igloo. If you want, you can collect some coins and destroy some of the Spindrifts, but just make sure not to leave. Go straight ahead from where you began, and you'll see what could be shown as a vertically-flipped "L" shape. It has a coin and a ! Block on it. Destroy the ! Block and receive your 1-Up! 4th 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): From the location of the last Mushroom, jump onto the platform in front of you that could be turned to look like an extremely long L. Turn your camera by pressing the LEFT arrow, and you should see another 1-Up Mushroom in the water. Run forwards and jump in to get it. (If you feel you need to, you can also swim down, if you don't get it after just jumping in.) ======================== Course 11: Wet-Dry World ======================== 1-Up count: 4 1-2nd 1-Ups (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): After entering the Course, either get to the cannon or start climbing. When you get past the Chuck-Ya and the long floating board, you should see a floating white tunnel with two 1-Ups inside it. Now, you can either jump, use Luigi's backflip, or use the cannon to get them both. 3rd 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Before you get this 1-Up, you must be in the Downtown section of the Course. Swim all the way to the top, and hit the yellow ! Block. A 1-Up will appear. 4th 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): To get this 1-Up, you must be in the Downtown section, with the water drained to the bottom. Now, go over to the corner with the two trees, and you will spot a ! Block. Hit it, and you have another 1-Up. ============================== Course 12: Tall, Tall Mountain ============================== 1-Up count: 8 1st 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Just after you begin, turn and head to the little area where the path gets narrower. You'll notice a 1-Up Mushroom just standing there. Run and get it. 2nd 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Run over to where the group of SMALL mushrooms is (with the red coins). Destroy the ! Block you'll see to get a 1- Up. 3rd 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Make your way over to the other area with the red coins, and climb up. Near the top, you'll notice a 1-Up Mushroom on a ledge. 4th 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Make your way forwards, past the group of three Goombas, and you'll come at an area where the walkway ends, and there's a waterfall. Stop at the edge and turn left. Walk a little and get a 1-Up! 5th 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Get into the slide area. Walk through the archway but DON'T SLIDE YET. Turn right and move a little forward to get another hidden 1-Up. 6th 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Make your way down the slide, and at the first big drop, before the first curve, you'll see a 1-Up Mushroom sliding down, too. Be faster than it and get it! 7th 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Make your way even further down the slide, until just before you see the arrows showing you to turn to the right for the next section. You'll see another 1-Up Mushroom sliding. Be fast and get it, but don't forget to make that turn! 8th 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Get up the mountain, just past the area where you enter the slide. You should notice an area with a bunch of Goombas and the ground should appear to be grass/moss/vines. Run around and three butterflies should appear. Punch them and one should contain a 1-Up. =========================== Course 13: Tiny-Huge Island =========================== 1-Up count: 5 1st 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Enter the Tiny Island, walk around for a bit on the starting section, and three butterflies should appear. Try to punch or step on one, and it will either turn into a black orb that will do damage to you, or, if you're lucky, it will turn into a 1-Up. 2nd 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): After going into the Huge Island, turn to you left and jump into the water. Avoiding the Bubba, swim down to the bottom, and grab the 1-Up under the water. 3rd 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): In the Huge Island, walk through the hole in the wall, and swim up to the sand hill with the Koopa, the Lakitu, and the Fly Guy. Walk/run all the way to the top, and you should see two coins. Grab them both, and a 1-Up will appear. 4th 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): After going through the hole in the wall and going past the water area, turn to the left. You should see a Goomba and a Fly Guy, so you can either kill them of avoid them. Do a long-jump over the gap, and jump into the wind gust. Land on the ledge above you, and hit the ! Block to reveal your final 1-Up for the Course. 5th 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Enter the Huge Island, and get into the cave with the 8 Red Coins. Get to the Switch Star crystal, and jump across the gap onto the small ledge with the Red Coin on it. Backflip, and grab onto the ceiling by holding the jump button. Move toward the ledge with the Blue Coin Switch on it, and grab the 1-Up near the top. ========================== Course 14: Tick Tock Clock ========================== 1-Up count: 1 1st 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Make your way all the way up to just past where you get the Wario Hat and walk by three of those bars that reel in then spring out at you. Once passed there, you'll get to the beginning of the area at the very top of the clock. Look right, and you'll see two rotating platforms (such as in the red coins area) and a ! Block just after. Destroy the block, and get your 1-Up Mushroom. ======================= Course 15: Rainbow Ride ======================= 1-Up count: 10 1st 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Ride the first carpet to the four spinning platforms, then jump over to the second carpet. When you get to the part with the carpets on each side, jump over to the one on the right. Ride it all the way to the top of the mansion, and hit the ! Block up there to get a 1-Up. 2nd 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Get inside the mansion as Luigi, and grab the Power Flower. Jump into the fireplace, and you will have a new 1-Up. (Thanks to peteyboo for this 1-Up) 3rd 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): While you're still up in the mansion, walk out toward the Switch Star, and stand near the edge of the doorway. You should teleport to the top of the Red Coin Maze. It will be windy, so make to not fall off. Now, very carefully, hit the ! Block, and a 1-Up will come out. If you grab onto the edge then pull yourself up, and run to get the 1-Up. Don't teleport back, though, as there is another 1-Up you can get up there. 4th 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): From the spot of the previous 1-Up, run all the way down the section, and you will see a wooden plank. Stand on it, and as it lowers, a 1-Up will appear. Just make sure to jump off to the left or right before you descend too far. 5th 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Follow the same procedure as the 1st 1-Up, but jump over to the left carpet instead of the right. Ride on it until you get to the spinning platform with two planks sticking out from it. Jump onto the middle of the platform, and grab the 1-Up. Now, you can either jump back onto the carpet before it disappears, or you can slide down the nearest pole. 6th 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Use the same process as the 1st 1-Up, but when the carpet is about to go over the Red Coins Maze, backflip onto the three wooden planks, and grab the 1-Up on top of them. 7th 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Using the carpet from the 5th 1-Up, ride it as far as it goes, and jump onto the floating ship. After getting onto the ship, climb all the way to the top of the pole. A 1-Up will appear, and it's one that comes after you, so don't worry about jumping off to get it. Don't leave the ship yet, because there is another 1-Up on it. 8th 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Now, while you're still on the ship, walk toward the wind, and grab the Wario cap. As Wario, go to the back of the ship, and grab the Power Flower. Run back up to the front of the ship, jump onto the bow that leads to the Star, and grab the 1-Up. NOTE: You can also get this 1-Up by long-jumping into it, but it's a lot easier with Wario's Metal ability. 9th 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Head to the area you would usually go to when heading to the Tricky Triangles star. When you get past the first Fly Guy, you will see a platform that slants toward the side you're standing on. Go past this platform, and slide all the way down the pole. Walk all the way to the end of the section, and hit the ! Block for another 1-Up. 10th 1-Up (obtainable on: Stars 1-7): Go to the area with the actual Tricky Triangles, and hit the ! Switch. Head all the way to the farthest triangle, and grab the 1-Up floating over it. ****************************************** 4. "Other" Levels' 1-Up Mushroom Locations ****************************************** =========================== A. Castle/Outside/Courtyard =========================== 1-Up count: 5 1-3rd 1-Ups: Go outside and to the cannon. (Note: This must be done with 150 stars, or else the cannon will be covered by a grate and you cannot get through without using some sort of cheat device or using one of the methods on Kuragia's Caste-Top FAQ.) Shoot from the cannon to the top of the roof and go over the fence on the right side. You'll see three 1-Up Mushrooms within the fenced-off area. 4th 1-Up: Go around to the right side of the castle (without the waterfall) and walk around between the last two trees. Three butterflies should appear at the right spot. Destroy one of them and you'll get a 1-Up Mushroom. 5th 1-Up: Enter the castle and go to the right, through the three-star door. Once entered, go to your left and you'll see a hole in the wall above you. Enter the hole and a 1-Up Mushroom will appear. You're in an enclosed area, so you don't need to worry about not getting it. ================= B. Sunshine Isles ================= 1-Up count: 1 1st 1-Up: From the beginning, Climb up the tree to your right, handstand, and jump. You'll receive a 1-Up. ====================== C. The Secret Aquarium ====================== 1-Up count: 1 1st 1-Up: When you enter, swim straight down and you should find a ring of coins just above where the red coin star would go. Once you're under it, swim up and a 1-Up should appear and follow you. ============================ D. The Secret of Battle Fort ============================ 1-Up count: 2 1st 1-Up: Go to the opposite side of the level from the beginning, and destroy one of the two red blocks. One of them should have a 1-Up Mushroom inside. 2nd 1-Up: From where you begin, go forwards a little and you should see an area producing Cannonballs. During the pause between them rolling by, check underneath a little square-enclosed area that they roll through. Look at the underside of the walkway above, and you'll see a 1-Up Mushroom. Go under and jump to get it. ============================= E. The Princess' Secret Slide ============================= 1-Up count: 2 1st 1-Up: After sliding down, just before you go through the little archways about halfway down the track. Be fast, and you'll get it. 2nd 1-Up: Collect 40 or more coins (blue coins are also acceptable) on your way down the slide, and when you reach the bottom go to the wall that's behind the star platform (on the opposite side of the stairs) and when you hit the ground there, a 1-Up Mushroom should appear. ==================== F. Over the Rainbows ==================== 1-Up count: 4 1st 1-Up: Make sure you are (or turn into) Mario, and fly down to the pink(ish) platform with the Bob-Omb Buddy, the Wario Cap, a ? Block, a cannon, a pole, and a red coin. Once down there, climb the pole and do a handstand at the top, and you'll get your 1-Up. 2nd 1-Up: Get the feather in the ? Block, then get into the cannon. Look at the touch screen map. You should see a SMALL grey cloud. This cloud is invisible, but if you go through it properly, or just above it, you can get the 1-Up Mushroom just on top of it. 3rd 1-Up: Get into the higher-level cannon on the next pink platform up, and shoot yourself into the mass of poles underneath a certain cloud. Climb around the poles, and you'll find yourself a 1-Up. 4th 1-Up: Get back onto the higher pink platform and shoot on TOP of the cloud with the poles. You'll see a ! Block on top of there. Destroy it, and you'll get another 1-Up Mushroom. ======================= H. Behind the Waterfall ======================= 1-Up count: 1 1st 1-Up: Enter as (or turn into) Wario, and take the metal cap as to not be swept away from the level by the water. Now, follow the current and get under the ! Block you see. Jump, and wait for your mushroom to appear. ============================ I. The Secret Under the Moat ============================ 1-Up count: 4 1st 1-Up: Enter the level and run to the right before sliding. You should see a Fire-Spitter next to a 1-Up Mushroom floating. You could backflip to get it, become Balloon Mario and float up to it, you could wall-jump to it, you could side-flip to it, you could triple-jump into it, etc. 2nd 1-Up: From the location of the last 1-Up, stay near the right side, and go down the slide, but make sure to hold back, as to go slower. You should come to a platform with a ! Block on it. Destroy the block to get a 1-Up Mushroom. 3rd 1-Up: From the last 1-Up, keep sliding, but MOVE TO THE LEFT. If you wish, you could just jump down from the last ledge to the next-down one, then down again to the lowest one, but make sure it's the left one. That platform's got a 1-Up Mushroom just standing there on it, which is easy to get. 4th 1-Up: Run over to the Mario Hat and then go back to the base of the slide. Destroy the Power Flower Box and you'll turn into Balloon Mario. Float over to the other section of the level (a separate platform in front of the slide), take the Power Flower on that platform up to a higher point, and then run over a bit and either wall-jump in a certain spot or float up to another floating 1- Up Mushroom in-between a row of coins. ================== J. Goomboss Battle ================== 1-Up count: 4 1st 1-Up: Slide down the part at the beginning and go forwards. You'll soon see a grated-roofed part (climbable) with a 1-Up Mushroom on top of it. Dodge the Piranha Plant (or kill it) and triple-jump, side-jump, backflip, etc. to get the 1-Up. 2nd 1-Up: Run across to the other side of the climbable area, get off, and go to the right to see another 1-Up Mushroom on a platform, not doing anything. Easy to get. 3rd 1-Up: Check your map and go to where the Luigi cap should be. Get the cap if not already Luigi. Go to the right side of the tree-like thing you're under and turn the camera. You should see a platform behind it. Backflip as Luigi and get to the platform to receive a 1-Up! 4th 1-Up: Go back to the location of the 2nd 1-Up. Look around and you'll see a vine leading up closer to the location of Goomboss. Go up it and handstand at the top to get your 1-Up. ================= K. Big Boo Battle ================= 1-Up count: 3 1st 1-Up: In the second room (mainly falling floor tiles), run across from where you enter and you'll see this 1-Up Mushroom. Get it. 2nd 1-Up: In the fourth room (nothing in the middle, mainly some boos and some moving tiles), go onto the moving tile in front of you. Step off onto the next platform, and onto the next moving tile. As it's moving, you'll be moved right into a 1-Up Mushroom. 3rd 1-Up: In the final room, run across the falling block road. About 3/5 to the end, you'll run directly into a 1-Up. =========================== M. Bowser in the Dark World =========================== 1-Up count: 6 1st 1-Up: Make your way up to the brown platform with the Goombas (just past a four-platform rotating thing) and destroy the ! Block to get a 1-Up Mushroom. 2nd 1-Up: Follow the trail up more until you reach the part with the little blue side-trail. Follow that to a brown platform with a spiked thing in the middle of it. Walk around to the ! Block on the platform and destroy it for another 1-Up Mushroom. 3-4th 1-Ups: Go back to the platforms that raise and lower based on where you stand on them, and turn the camera to see two 1-Up Mushrooms in different little interval sections along the way. Jump very carefully to get them. 5-6th 1-Ups: On top of two of the platforms above the raise/lower ones previously mentioned. ========================= N. Bowser in the Fire Sea ========================= 1-Up count: 6 1st 1-Up: Step on the moving, lava-floating platform at the beginning and follow it until you hit something and have to jump. Just to your left on top of the platform you just jumped on is a 1-Up Mushroom. 2nd 1-Up: In plain sight, just at the end of the trail that the moving, lava- floating platform is on. 3rd 1-Up: Follow the trail until you get to a higher-up point, with a pole leading to a cage. Climb to the top of the pole for your 1-Up. 4th 1-Up: Go further up the path until you get to the first platform of a series of up-and-down-moving platforms attached by grated walkways. On the first platform, you'll notice a ! Block. Destroy it to get your 1-Up Mushroom. 5th 1-Up: Very close to the end of the stage (but before the falling-brick walkway), there's a platform with a Star Switch and a ! Block. Destroy the block for your 1-Up Mushroom. 6th 1-Up: On the platform just next to the last one, there's a 1-Up right in the middle of it. No way to miss it. ==================== O. Bowser in the Sky ==================== 1-Up count: 5 1st 1-Up: Make your way through the level until you pass a Mini-Piranha Plant and stand on the platform just before the platform that raises and lowers based on where you're standing. There should be a little platform below you as kind of a walkway to the lower section. Directly below you is a 1-Up Mushroom. Get onto the platform below you and take it. 2nd 1-Up: Just past the raise/lower platform, in the middle of a set of four revolving platforms. Jump when you're on the lowest platform to get it. 3rd 1-Up: Get on the platform that moves along a track further up the level and you'll see a 1-Up on top of a somewhat-tall wooden platform near the track's end. 4th 1-Up: Just ahead of the previous 1-Up, go to the spinning platform with the pole and the three coins. Collect the three coins and a 1-Up will appear for you to obtain watch out, though, and be sure to get it before it falls off. 5th 1-Up: Once you get further up and to the windy platform with the Goombas, pillars, Health Heart, and stairs to Bowser's Warp Pipe at the end, go behind the top-left platform and you'll get a 1-Up. ************************** 5. 1-Ups Without Mushrooms ************************** 1st 1-Up Method: Get 50 coins in a level (8-star level or "Other" level) and obtain a star that will make you exit the level. For every group of 50 coins you had from that level, you will receive a 1-Up. 2nd 1-Up Method: Within a level, become giant by touching a Super (Red) Mushroom. Once giant, hit seven mobile non-part-of-scenery polygonal things (signs, enemies, cannonballs, etc.) and you will see numbers going up to seven. Once you hit an eighth thing, you will get a 1-Up. Everything you hit as giant from that point on will earn you a 1-Up, as well. 3rd 1-Up Method: Enter Bob-Omb Battlefield and select star 2 as a character other than Mario. Collect the cap in the area with the running around Goombas (to the right of the Chain Chomp) and begin your race against Koopa the Quick. Make your way up to the other Mario cap and get it. You should receive a 1-Up! ************************ 6. Tricks for Fast 1-Ups ************************ Trick 1: Go to Hazy Maze Cave and make your way to the maze. Find a corner with a Snufit and a red block. Destroy the block and get the Super Mushroom. Get over to where there are two moles throwing rocks at you. Run back and forth over them and you should get an easy 20-60 lives. Trick 2: Go to Tall, Tall, Mountain and make it so you're either Wario or a character with a Wario cap on. Go across from where the area with small mushrooms is and you should see two black blocks. Destroy one of them and get the mushroom. Then go over a little to where there are five moles throwing rocks at you. Run over the moles when they pop up and you should get an easy 10-50 lives. Trick 3: Go to Whomp's Fortress on star 3-7 and go to where you would get the 1st 1-Up Mushroom. Break the block and you should get a Super Mushroom. Go to the corner where the fence meets the wall and you should teleport to the pole area. Jump over the fence and double-jump up, press forward, and hold the jump button, and you should get up to the platform with the tower of the fortress. Go over to the wooden plank on your left and you'll see that there are two main sides to it, one skinnier than the other. Go and touch the skinny side and it should fall over. Run along it after it's fallen over or jump on top of it to get a VERY easy 100 lives. (Thanks to aznbob for this trick) ****** 7. FAQ ****** Q: What does a 1-Up Mushroom look like? A: It's a green and white spotted mushroom with two eyes on it that, when touched, will give you a life. Q: I can't seem to do Trick 3 for fast 1-ups. What may be the problem? A: Certain versions of the game cannot perform this trick. The trick has been confirmed on certain game cards, and not others, so it's not your fault if you cannot do it. Q: Sometimes I follow exactly what the guide says in order to get a 1-up, but nothing is there. What may be the problem? A: Be sure to check again to make sure that you didn't miss anything or do anything unnecessary. Also, check to make sure you're in the right level and doing one of the right stars. Certain 1-Ups cannot be gotten on certain star missions, so make absolutely sure you're within the range of stars that it can be gotten on. Q: Is this guide complete? A: This guide may or may not be complete, but it contains all the information sleep_mode and I have been able to find. If you ever happen to see a 1-Up mushroom that's not in this guide, PLEASE contact us immediately, and we'll put it up. Q: Which is the Tiny Island and which is the Huge Island? A: You don't change size, the island does. The Tiny Island is in the tiny PICTURE, and the opposite for the Huge one. Q: What kinds of 1-Up Mushrooms are there? A: Well, there're many kinds, but I can separate them into just a few different major sections. Scaredy-Cats: Ones that move away from you, whatever direction you're coming at them from. Move quickly to get them before they disappear or get away. Stalkers: Ones that chase you. No need to rush to get them. Slowpokes: Most of the ones that appear from ! Blocks. They move very slowly, and are pretty easy to catch. Speed-Demons: Some of the ones that're coin-related. Like in Tiny-Huge Island, where you get the two coins on the beach and one appears and moves down the beach VERY quickly. Move fast to get these, as they're very fast. and Stationaries: These ones stand still all the time until you catch them, and are already in the level when you enter. Q: How many 1-Up Mushrooms are there in the game altogether? A: So far, we know of 115 in the game, yet there may be more. Q: Help! My game resets to four lives every single time I reset! What's wrong with it?!? A: Settle down. This happens to everyone. The programmers were prolly too lazy to have the game record your 1-Up count whenever you reset, so it just automatically resets itself to four every time you quit. They're pretty easy to get, usually, so you don't have to worry much. *********************** 8.
