Intro***********************SM64DS_1**************************************** Welcome to yet another DS FAQ/Walkthrough of mine. This FAQ focuses on the remake of what is possibly the greatest Mario game from the Nintendo 64, Super Mario 64, now named Super Mario 64 DS. (Yeah, Nintendo never has been exactly creative with game titles, have they?) Anyway, this is actually my second FAQ for a game with such non-linear gameplay as this. My previous one was for Super Mario Sunshine, the "sequel" of sorts to the Nintendo 64 version of this game. Okay, enough useless rambling. Here's an FAQ for you. Enjoy. 2. Version History***********************SM64DS_2****************************** v0.10 - Finished the whole general layout. Finished up the Contents, Intro, Legalities, and Section I of the walkthrough. Amazing that this all takes up ~42 KB. >_> 11:31 PM 1/3/2012 v0.22 - Finished up Section II and Section III-1 of the walkthrough. 10:50 PM 1/4/2012 v0.25 - Finished Section III-2 of the walkthrough. (Yeah, I got distracted...) 11:25 PM 1/5/2012 v0.30 - Probably would've gotten more done had I not been working on a map for Star Fox 64 3D -- it was one of those ideas you need to do immediately or you'll forget about it. Anyhow, Sections III-3 and III-4 finished. 1:30 AM 1/7/2012 v0.35 - Finished Sections III-5 and III-6 of the walkthrough. 11:55 PM 1/7/2012 v0.40 - Finished Sections III-7 and III-8 of the walkthrough. Also decided to expand this FAQ to include stuff about the minigames and the rabbits. 12:00 AM 1/9/2012 v0.42 - Finished Section III-9 of the walkthrough. 11:24 PM 1/9/2012 v0.55 - Finished Sections III-10, III-11, and III-12 of the walkthrough. 12:05 AM 1/11/2012 v0.70 - Finished Sections III-13, III-14, and III-15 of the walkthrough. 20% (6 Stars) done with Section III-16. 12:03 AM 1/12/2012 v1.10 - Finished Section III-16 and the whole of Sections IV and V. Section 5-I is also finished. 11:43 PM 1/12/2012 Final - I ended up finishing this guide, and probably my main FAQing for a fair while. I want to enjoy my games from my Bounties, so I'll take it easy for a bit. Anyways... ~~ Start-End Time: 10 days. ~~ File Size : 265 KB. ~~ Time of Update: 10:04 PM 1/13/2012. 3. Walkthrough***********************SM64DS_4********************************** +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++ ++ ++ Section I - Layout Explanation **SM64DS_41** ++ ++ ++ +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ There is a reason I laid out my walkthrough for this game in a way that goes against the traditional beginning-to-end format you've seen and will see in most other walkthroughs for other games. The reason lies in the fact that game is just so non-linear. You can do things in this game in almost any order you want. It would near-impossible for any FAQ author to write it in a start-to-finish format without taking away some of the non-linear fun for you. So I won't be doing that. Instead, in Section III, you'll have the Power Stars walkthrough. All fifteen main areas of the game are there, with all seven courses and their respective 100-Coin stars. That does total 120 Stars, by the way. After that, you'll find all of the Secret Stars that are within Peach's Castle and the local area in the sixteenth section. In Section IV, you'll find the details on how to find each character of the game. In Section V, you'll find walkthroughs for how to beat Bowser in his three respective worlds. For all three sections (III, IV, and V), I only will state a requirement for something (such as character) when it applies. Otherwise, you are to assume you can use any character you wish. Additionally, for Sections IV and V, there are some extra Stars in them. You may want to take a glance in there to find the proper Stars that you may be missing. You'll also note that the same Stars are in Section III-16, because they ARE Secret Stars. Okay, I hope you understood that. Good luck with the game, and enjoy! +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++ ++ ++ Section II - Beginning of the Game **SM64DS_42** ++ ++ ++ +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ After the introductory cutscene, you'll begin controlling Yoshi. Press the Pause button to change around the control settings if you want, then let's get on with this. Go forward to the large castle, Peach's Castle, right in front of you. Cross the bridge to find a door. Trying to open it, which is done by getting near the door, results in failure because the door has been locked. Go back across the bridge and Lakitu, who actually plays a benign role in this game, primarily holding the camera for you. Anyhow, Lakitu will notify you that a rabbit has the key to the castle and then marks it on your map with a key symbol. Head over to the rabbit and start chasing it around -- to catch it, you must use Yoshi's attack, which uses his tongue, to swallow the rabbit. Afterwards, you'll get the key. Go back to the castle and get in front of the door, then into the castle itself. This castle will become the "hub" area of sorts. From here, you'll be able to access a majority of the Power Stars within the game. Now, as you look around, you'll notice doors with numbers on them. Those mark the number of Power Stars required to enter that room. Initially, all you can do is go into the room on the left. There, jump into the painting to reach your first world, Bob-omb Battlefield. This is where I must leave you due to the non-linearity of the game. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++ ++ ++ Section III - Power Stars Walkthrough **SM64DS_43** ++ ++ ++ +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ O===========================================================================O | Section 1 - Bob-omb Battlefield **SM64DS_431** | O===========================================================================O ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Area Information/Notes ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) - Location: First floor entrance room. Begin by speaking with the red Bob-omb nearby, then start following the dirt path to the bridge. Jump on or otherwise kill the Goombas if you want and continue across the bridge. On the other side, turn left and continue following the path. As you do, you'll note a Chain Chomp on your right. He's fairly harmless if you move by fast enough. Soon, you'll reach a bridge. This one is different in the fact that it is weight-sensitive -- stay too long on one side and you'll fall off. On the other side, go forward and take a right at the sign. From there, continue forward and you'll notice a somewhat caged-off area. Go into it through the hole in the cage nearby. From here, you have a choice. One involves the intended path -- for such, turn right and go up the spiraling hill. Or you can take a mild shortcut. To do so, dash up the hill in front of you -- the one with the Red Coin on the way -- and you'll be a fair way up the mountain. Either way, as you go up the mountain, you will find a bunch of rolling black balls. This will damage you if they touch you, so try to jump over them. Part of the way along, you'll also find a Goomba near a red brick. Figured I would mention this, as you can kill it for one Coin, which heals you. Continue up the incline to eventually find an alcove on the left. This is one of the spawn points for the black balls -- luckily, they tend to stop firing when you're nearby. Continue along, past some bridges, cannons, and Coins, and you'll soon find a heart nearby. This heart will heal you -- the faster you run into it, the more you're healed! Anyhow, continue to the top of the incline to find the big Bob-omb we've been looking for. Get near him to start a conversation. Afterwards, you'll be forced to battle him. For this battle, he'll toss Bob-ombs of regular sizes at you. You, since you should be using Yoshi, need to swallow them up and quickly spit them back at the King Bob-omb. Do this three times to defeat him, which releases your first Power Star. Jump at it to get it. ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Episode #2 - Footrace with Koopa the Quick ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) For this, you'll be required to utilize Mario or use his cap, which is found in this area. Upon arriving, assuming you're not using Mario, go forward to the large Koopa nearby. He'll ask you if Mario is around; he wants to have a race with him. Odds are, he's probably still locked up, so we're going to need to do something to impersonate him. Look at your map -- you should see one or two red cap markers there. These mark Mario's caps -- a character can use them to become Mario. One should be on the other side of the nearby bridge, in the grassy field. It is being worn by a Goomba -- kill the Goomba to get the cap. Now, return to the large Koopa and speak with him to commence the race. (Note: once you begin, if you get damaged and therefore lose the Mario cap, don't fear -- there is a solution in the following paragraph.) Initially, you'll probably have the lead. Go across the bridge and take a left. Cross the Chain Chomp's area, go across the weight-sensitive bridge, and turn right. Go forward to the caged-off area and through the hole nearby. This time, instead of using the intended path (which involves turning to the right and avoiding several black balls), just continue dashing forward and go up that hill, grabbing the Red Coin on the way. Now, continue going up the spiral incline. If you lost your cap on the way, a Goomba up here will be wearing one, so take it back from him. Continue up the incline, dodging all the black balls and whatnot that comes at you. Near the top, you can save time by simply climbing up onto the platform with the flag. There, touch the flag and wait for the large Koopa to come up here and give you your Power Star. ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Episode #3 - 5 Silver Stars! ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Episodes like this are those that require you to find five Silver Stars scattered throughout the level. The locations are marked on your map, but they rarely account for elevation or whether an enemy is holding them, which is where I come in. I will generally just end up providing a list of the Silver Stars and where to find them. So, here you go. -- Go to the tree between the first bridge along the dirt path and where you begin. Climb to the top and do a handstand before jumping off to collect it. -- Go across the first bridge along the dirt path now to the grassy field beneath the floating island. There should be a Chain Chomp roaming around here. (Again, the grassy field, not next to the weight-sensitive bridge!) Head to the Chain Chomp's tail to find the Silver Star. Touch it to get it. -- Now go over the weight-sensitive bridge. On the other side, turn left to find a few Goombas ahead. Defeat them all -- one of them is carrying a Silver Star, which is made available to you once the holder is defeated. -- From there, face the caged-off area and turn left slightly, so you are facing the flower beds instead. In the center of one, you'll find the Silver Star. -- Now just go up the mountain incline, killing all the Goombas on the way. One of them is holding the Silver Star. After get all five Silver Stars, return to the start of the level -- you can go via the cannon on the mountain if you opened it up already -- and jump at the Power Star within the glass orb to get it. ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Episode #4 - Big Bob-omb's Revenge ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) For this particular episode, you must use Mario, Luigi, or Wario, or grab one of their hats scattered throughout the level. Just using Yoshi will not be sufficient. As back in Episode #1, we are to go to the top of the mountain to fight the King Bob-omb. You may need to grab a cap, too -- a Mario cap is part-way up the incline. From the start, follow the dirt path to and across the bridge. On the other side, take a left and continue forward, past the Chain Chomp, to the weight-sensitive bridge. Quickly cross it. On the other side, turn right to face the caged-off area. Go into there and start ascending the incline to soon find a Goomba wearing a Mario cap. Grab it if you want (or need, if you're using Yoshi), then continue up the incline. Before reaching the top, be sure to run through the heart to heal up. At the top of the mountain, you'll have a conversation with the King Bob-omb. You are soon thrust into another fight with him. For this battle, the King Bob-omb will walk around the field, tossing you away when you approach him from his front. Instead, run around to his back and use your "Attack" button to pick him up, then toss him down. By "down", I don't mean over the edge. That is classified as cheating and not allowed. Just toss him onto the platform the both of you are on, okay? Do this a total of three times to defeat him and receive your Power Star. ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Episode #5 - Mario Wings to the Sky ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) To complete this episode, you'll need to have solidified all of the red ? blocks. To do so, unlock Mario (see Section IV-1 for details). Next, get a total of 16 Power Stars and, in the entrance room of the castle, you'll find a ray of light beaming down. Have Mario look into it (default control setting has you use the X button) to get into the air. From there, land on the central castle tower and smash into the ? switch to solidify the ? blocks. Once you do that, you can come to the level. Any character can be used, but you'll need to be Mario or wear one of his caps. Next, walk along the dirt path to the ? block. Bop into it, then jump to grab the white feather, which gives Mario the ability to fly, which is explained to you the first time you grab the feather. Now, quickly return to the cannon near the entrance of the level. Speak with the Cannon Buddy (the Red Bob-omb) nearby to open up the cannons. Now get inside the cannon nearby. Find the floating island and aim high above the tree there, then launch yourself. You want Mario to land on that island, so do so. There, hit the ? block to find another feather. You'll also find another cannon in the ground. Now, when you initially fire up the cannon, you'll probably notice the Coin rings. You have to collect the center Coin from each ring (there are five) to succeed. You probably won't get all five Coins from the first shot. If so, fly around and make another pass at them without using the cannon. Should that one fail to get them all, return to the island, use the ? block to restore your flight powers, then shoot out of the cannon and keep going. You'll get your Power Star upon getting all five center Coins. ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Episode #6 - Find the 8 Red Coins ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) I'll go ahead and note that, against some other beliefs, you DON'T need to have Mario to complete this level. You didn't have to do the episodes in order you know... Anyhow, the cannon on the mountain is what makes this possible. This is one of those episodes where you collect eight Red Coins to obtain a Power Star. It's a pretty simple concept, but the Red Coins are scattered throughout the level. Therefore, I have a list right here... -- Begin by going along the path towards the bridge. Instead of immediately getting on it, go to the left towards the rotating platforms. Get on one as it comes around and grab the Red Coin above you. -- Once you do that, jump off onto this higher ledge and proceed forward to the grassy field under the floating island. Hug the hill on the left to find a rock. On the top, you'll find a Red Coin. -- Now, get back on the dirt path and start going towards the Chain Chomp's territory. As you may notice, the Chain Chomp is stuck to a wooden peg. On the peg is a Red Coin. -- Now cross the weight-sensitive bridge nearby. On the other side, turn left to the wooden peg area with the several Goombas. You'll find TWO Red Coins here. -- Next, go towards the caged-off area. As you, don't proceed inside yet. From outside the entrance, facing it, head left and off of the ledge. Go beneath the bridge to find a Red Coin. (And a 1-Up Mushroom!) -- Now, return to the entrance to the caged-off area. Go up the hill right in front of you, dashing, to reach the Red Coin. -- Now that you're on the mountain, proceed up it to the cannon you can use. There, shoot to the floating island, aiming above the tree. If you aim it right, you'll hit the tree and hold on, or you'll hit the Red Coin that is above the tree itself. If the former occurred, climb up to the top, do a handstand, and jump off. Now that you have all eight Red Coins, the Power Star will appear. It is in the area where you found two Red Coins close to each other. (If you don't remember, cross the weight-sensitive bridge near the Chain Chomp area, turn left, and go forward.) ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Episode #7 - Behind Chain Chomp's Gate ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Perhaps the simplest of all these episodes... Upon arriving, go to the bridge along the dirt path. Cross it to the other side and turn left. Go into the territory of the Chain Chomp. There, you'll find the Chain Chomp is tied to a wooden peg. Ground-pound this peg three times to release the Chain Chomp, which opens up the gate nearby. Inside this gate, you'll find the Power Star. ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) The 100-Coin Star ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) For this, I tend to prefer Episode #5 - Mario Wings to the Sky, because it has those Coin rings. You don't necessarily need Mario to complete this -- you can just cannon-shot from the mountain to the island, then to the rings of Coins. Of course, having Mario (actual Mario or via a cap) helps. Begin by going to the bridge and going underneath it for about five Coins. Now, take the side path in the trench and defeat some enemies along the way for more Coins. Return to the bridge and cross it. Defeat the enemies in that field -- the Koopa is worth five Coins -- and grab the Red Coin from the rock in the corner. (Red Coins are worth two Coins.) Head over to the Chain Chomp area now and just grab the Red Coin. Cross the weight-sensitive bridge nearby and, on the other side, turn left. Go into this clearing to find some Goombas. Defeat them for some Coins, then ground-pound all of the pegs here three times for some more Coins, about five each. Next, proceed towards the caged-off area. Don't enter it yet -- go to the flower bed nearby to find some Coins. Collect all of them and the resulting 1-Up Mushroom, then go underneath the bridge to the caged-off area for a 1-Up Mushroom, a Red Coin, and a Bob-omb. Go into the caged-off area and ascend the incline. Collect all of the Coins on the way by defeating enemies, breaking bricks, and just grabbing the Coins. This may or may not be enough to have 100 Coins -- if not, cannonball over to the floating island to use that cannon (and hopefully some flying with Mario) to reach the Coin rings. THAT should be enough Coins. At the top, you probably should go along the stone bridge, so as to avoid waking the Piranha Plant. Either way you take (the alternate was the ledge next to the wall), you'll soon find a gap with a floating, rotating bridge. Wait for it to reach your ledge, then get on. Walk to the center and, when it connects to the other ledge, get off. Continue along the path. As you do, take notice of a block on the left -- you can break it to find a 1-Up Mushroom. Now, face the high ledge nearby. It is possible to triple-jump up to that ledge if you feel like it. If not, return to the main path and continue forward to find some rotating ledges. Either way, once you reach the top, you'll have to fight a Whomp. This battle is unusually simple (and I think recreated in Super Mario Galaxy 2) for a battle. It is nothing more than fighting a giant Whomp. As it roams around, get near its feet to cause it to fall over. Once it does, get on it and ground-pound it. Do this a total of three times to find your Power Star. ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Episode #2 - To the Top of the Fortress ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Once you arrive, go up the incline nearby. Tilt your aim up some -- about level with the platform above the pillars -- and fire. You should smack into the pillar and arrive on the platform. Use the pole nearby to descend to the Star. ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Episode #4 - Red Coins on the Floating Isle ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Another Red Coin collecting episode. Here we go. -- Begin by climbing the tree nearby. As you approach the top, an owl will fly out. After conversing with it, grab onto it by jumping and holding the button. Go forward and drop onto the floating islands to find TWO Red Coins. -- Now drop the ground below. Continue around the rim of the island to the corner opposite where you arrived at. You should find a Red Coin in the flower bed there. -- Now, continue along this path around the rim of the island. Once you reach the water area, go forward to the incline and drop to the other side onto the dirt incline. Ascend it to the pushy stones' area. As you cross here, you'll find a mid-air Red Coin. -- Go across this ledge to the other side. There, start ascending the stairs. As you do, you'll want to get on the step above the Thwomp. Once it lands, jump onto it and let it carry you up to the Red Coin. -- Now return to the stairway and to its apex. Turn and look at the Piranha Plant nearby. CRAWL towards it to find a Red Coin nearby. -- See the narrow ledge nearby? Cross it to another Red Coin. -- Go to the other side of the ledge, where you'll find the rotating bridge. Get on it when it reaches you and go to the center. Once it passes the wedge block, get on the "branch" of the bridge. Don't go to the other side; just line yourself up with the coin trail to touch the Red Coin. Now that you have all eight Red Coins, drop off of the bridge to the water pool and continue towards the area in which you enter this place. Now, go towards the dirt incline and PAST it to find the Star. ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Episode #5 - Fall onto the Caged Island ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Once you arrive, climb up the tree nearby. As you do, an owl will fly out. Once it does, drop to the ground and talk with it. Afterwards, jump at it and hold the button to begin flying. Fly yourself over to the very obvious caged island. Release the jump button to land on the island, then simply walk over to the Star. ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Episode #6 - Blast Away the Wall ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Once you arrive, go up the incline nearby. At the top of it, continue along the ledge. As you do, beware the jutting out rocks from the wall, as well as the retracting platforms nearby. On the other side, climb up the staircase nearby. At the top, continue forward and down the incline into the pool of water. There, go to the ledge on the other side of the water -- the one with the red Bob-omb on it. Speak with him to open up the cannon nearby if needed, then get inside. Begin by aiming for the rotating bridge nearby, above the water pit and next to the wall. Aim directly at it and center it in your crosshairs. Now, as you know, that incline below the bridge is barred by two walls. On the one farthest from you, you should notice a line at the high corner to your right. Aim and shoot above that line to reveal the Star. Get back in the cannon and shoot at the Star now. ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Episode #7 - Switch Star of the Fortress ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) For this episode, you'll need to have Mario, Luigi, or Wario, or somehow get one of their caps. Yoshi alone cannot complete this level. Okay, upon arriving, head around the rim of the island. As you get to the opposite corner, you'll find a block. Break it to find a Mushroom, which makes you grow large and destroy almost anything in your way. We're going to use it to clear our way. Use it to get rid of the nearby Piranha Plant, then go along and destroy every block and enemy you come across. You'll probably reach that glass sphere before running out of Mushroom power -- if so, continue past it to find some more Goombas to destroy. (By the way, the above is worth doing mostly to make it easier on you and give you about five lives!) Now that you're done and cleared a decent path, go back to the start of the area and start ringing around the island again. As you do, after the first jump to a lower ledge, pay attention to the alcoves on the left. Break the blocks in there -- one has a switch beneath it. Stand on it and run around the island back to the glass sphere, preferably through the path we cleared. Touch the sphere to finish. ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) The 100-Coin Star ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) By this point, I'll probably just mention some good places to farm Coins. Anyhow, I tend to prefer Episode #4 for this Star. You probably should use the Mushroom thing mentioned in the above episode so as to destroy enemies and blocks easily, then grabbing the Coins afterwards. You can find some Coins on the incline next to the water pool, some in the wooden stumps throughout the area, and there is a blue switch you can ground-pound near the glass sphere for a few Blue Coins. I generally have about 110 Coins by now, although there are some enemies on the mountain that were barely scratched (*cough* Whomps *cough*), and some Coins on the floating isles. Get on it and jump on over to the first-mentioned stone ledge. A red Bob-omb is there; speak with him to open up the cannon. Now go to that cannon -- it is in front of where you arrived. Get inside. Once you begin aiming, the Star will be right in front of you on the map. Lower your aim to see better. Aim for the leftmost stone pillar and raise your aim a fair deal, so that only one-half to two-thirds of the pillar remain on-screen. Shoot and you should hopefully land on the pillar. Reshoot there if you failed. Now, rotate your character and the camera -- the latter is better done with the Touch Screen controls -- so that your character's back is facing the stone ledge on the wall nearby. Jump now and you'll land on the ledge, hopefully. Retry that if needed. Anyway, on the ledge, climb up the pillar and handstand for a Red Coin. -- Now, we're rather close to the central portion of this area, not counting the secret cave. Right after getting the Power Flower and going invisible, go forward through the cave, hugging the right wall. As you do, you'll come across a yellow switch. Secondly, the Jet Stream is actually a high-speed "river" of wind in the troposphere about 10 ~ 20 miles (16 ~ 32 kilometers) in the air. It is not really used for a high-power jet of water. Sorry, just had to mention that. >_> Once you arrive, go forward into the water. Continue swimming forward to the other end of the area, where the deep pool of water is. Dive down there and go to the bottom of the water pool, and look around. You'll probably notice a hole in the wall. Swim through it to its end to find a hidden cave. In this cave, hit the ? block nearby for a Power Flower. For Wario, this makes him metallic and very heavy, enough to avoid the force of buoyancy, even when combined with an opposing jet of water. Have him walk into the water and simply go forward to the Power Star. ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) The 100-Coin Star ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Any episode is suitable for this, although Episode #1 makes it a bit tough. Anyhow, one major thing that will influence whether you actually get the Star or not is if you use the Blue Coin switch near the start. Begin by using the switch, quickly turning around and breaking the left brick, then riding the Koopa shell across the water to find about eight Blue Coins, valued at forty regular Coins! You could also go underwater and open up the shells -- there are a bunch of Coins there. There are some on the wooden walkways next to the wooden ship, as well. The non-shelled Red Coins and the Goombas at the start and the cavern also provide some Coins. Basically, that's about it, and that's BARELY ~110 Coins if you do it right. Try to speed up after the first tunnel and hang a bit left to make the inclined turn ahead. Near the end, try to slow down because there will be a narrow trail of ice cubes. At the end, you'll find your Star by going through the door. NOTE: There is a shortcut to this. In the first tunnel, you'll notice a very tight line of about five Coins. Follow it and bump into the wall to go THROUGH the wall and along a long tunnel, grabbing a 1-Up Mushroom on the way. Be sure to go as fast as possible. If you do, you'll land on a ledge. Yoshi alone cannot do this episode very easily. You CAN, but it solely based on luck, because you are to carry a penguin down the mountain. Yoshi cannot carry, so you'll be lucky if the penguin actually gets in the right place. Anyhow, once you arrive, jump onto the cabin nearby. Pick up the penguin and go down the snowy slide nearby. (You can jump down to the proper ledge, but it is rather risky.) At the bottom of the slide, go forward to the bridge and cautiously cross it while avoiding the snowmen. At the other side, jump forward and off of the ledge to the ground, probably burying you in the snow a bit. Jump out and pick up the penguin again if needed, then bring it over to the larger penguin near the cabin for your Star. ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Episode #3 - Big Penguin Race ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Once you arrive, jump into the cabin. There, you'll find a large penguin. Speak with it to be challenged to a race. It is much like the first race in Episode #1, except for one thing... You cannot use the shortcut. Use of it is an automatic failure. So, just to be careful, avoid the Coin trail in the first tunnel. For the rest, be fairly fast when it is safe to be. If you reach the bottom first, you'll get a Star. ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Episode #4 - Frosty Slide for 8 Red Coins ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) This episode absolutely requires Yoshi -- there is no known alternative. You also will be grabbing another eight Red Coins, obviously. -- Upon arriving, jump onto the cabin and onto the ledge above, where the small penguin is. Turn left and go forward to find a campfire. As you do, stop at the bridge jump off to the right, towards the mountain. You'll soon reach a ledge. Swallow the campfire there and burn down the nearby ice cube for another (wet) Red Coin. -- Next, go to the side of the ledge nearest the bottom of the snowy slope, where the snowman head is, and jump onto there. Go to the bottom of the snowy slope to find a Red Coin. (It is near the Red Coin Buddy.) -- Turn around and start heading for the bridge. However, don't go onto the bridge yet. Go to the right to find a lower ledge. Drop there and look around, near the edge of the gap, for a Red Coin. -- Now cross the bridge with the snowmen. On the other side, continue following the path on this ledge to a broken bridge. Your end has a Red Coin. -- Now drop to the ground, where you'll find the large penguin and the exit cabin for the indoor slide. Go to the tree nearby and climb to the top, do a handstand, and jump to find a Red Coin. (Ignore the owl.) -- Now, do a 180-turn and go forward. As you do, you'll notice a bridge on your left. Cross it to find a Red Coin. -- Go back to the main ledge and continue along your previous course to the edge of the ledge. There, turn left to find a Red Coin. Now that you have eight Red Coins, the Power Star will appear on the other side of the broken bridge from earlier. You can use the owl from earlier to go there, or just get to the bridge manually and long jump across. ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Episode #5 - Snowman's Lost His Head ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Upon arriving, jump onto the cabin and onto the ledge above it (the one with the little penguin). There, turn left and descend to the lower ledge. There, you'll find a large snowball, which is actually a snowman's body. Speak with it and head to the bottom of the slide. There, continue forward to the snowman head and don't speak with it, as I think it won't let the body come over there. Anyhow, the body will follow you, add itself to the head, and you'll get a Power Star. ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Episode #6 - Mario's Super Wall Kick ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) For this episode, you'll need to be Mario or use one of his caps in the level. Upon arriving, head on to the bottom of the area. The fastest method by far is to turn around after starting and get onto the broken bridge here. Stand still for a moment to be warped to the bottom. There, proceed to the main ledge and go towards and past the large penguin. You'll find a wooden platform nearby. IF YOU HAVEN'T ACTIVATED THE CANNONS, then get on there and, while riding, jump to the floating island. Speak with the Cannon Buddy to open up the cannons, then jump off back to the ledge you were on moments ago -- a gust of wind will catch you. Back here, get into the cannon. Aim across the large abyss nearby and you'll notice a tree. Aim for it and adjust your aim upwards some to account for the effect of gravity. Blast yourself across the gap, hopefully hanging onto the tree or just not losing a life. Once you successfully land, follow the path nearby across a very narrow ledge -- you'll have to punch the enemies you come across here. Soon, you'll find an arrow formation of Coins. There is a gap they are pointing to. Long jump across the gap. On the other side, climb up the incline nearby to the wall. There, jump at the wall and wall jump to the next ledge. Go to the end of it. Now, you are to wall jump at the wall the ledge is on, then the wall opposite the ledge you were on, to make it to the next platform. There, get on the wooden platform nearby. Ride it along and, when first possible, jump onto the floating island. Stand on the yellow switch there to make a Star appear across the gap. Have Wario long jump back across -- the updraft will catch you -- and then ground-pound on the ice blocking you from the Star to reach it. NOTE -- While typing this, I came up with a currently-untested theory for this. There are two main components to this -- the indoor and outdoor slides. Use them both (use the indoor twice, once for the main path and once for the shortcut) to get around 80 Coins. After that, just go around and breaking some bricks and defeating enemies and such to make up for the others. Additionally, do you remember where the Red Coin Star popped up? It was near the non-warping broken bridge. There, I think you can find a Blue Coin switch. "Who you gonna call!?" *is hit with rotten tomatoes* Anyhow, to defeat a Boo, it is worth noting that you must attack it when it is solid (non-transparent), which happens when you and it are not facing each other; attacking from behind is a common method. Anyhow, you'll see a large mansion in front of you. Go around to the back of it, defeating a few enemies on the way, to find the back door. Go in there to find a Boo, possibly two. Defeat either one or both of them, then return to the front entrance of the mansion and go through the front door. Here, go through the northern door on the western wall. Here, you may find a Boo to defeat -- only if you beat just one in the back room. If you don't find it here, hang out here the Boo painting for a moment. Then return to the main room and through the western door on the northern wall. You'll find a Boo (and a Mr. I) in here. Defeat the Boo (and the Mr. I if you want -- do it by running around it) and return to the main room. Go through the southeastern door. There, go along the ledge ringing to the room to find another Boo. Defeat it and continue to the next room. There, you'll find a Boo somewhere -- it likes to float around. Defeat it and you'll get a message. This message basically says that the Big Boo has appeared in the main entrance room. Go there and you can fight it. You fight it just like a normal, but extraneously large, Boo. You generally try to hit while it is solid, which occurs when it and you are not locking eyes. Hit them in this order: | [1] | LEFT | [3] | RIGHT | [2] | Of course, hit the [1] book, then the [2] book, and then the [3] book. You hit them with punches or air kicks. Beware of hitting a wrong one, as a book will hit you, unless you managed to repel yourself of the wall by hitting it. Mario is the only one who can use this Power Flower to rise up to the ledge above the door through which you entered. Luigi and Wario have to either backflip from atop the ? block or somehow get a Mario cap and do the above. Either way, go through the door on that ledge. In this room, you'll find a Luigi painting. That is where you can rescue Luigi; see Section IV-2 for details. You'll also find a Blue Coin switch. Save it for now, in case you need a health refill in a second. Go through the doorway near it, though. And here, you'll find the Big Boo. As usual, hit him three times when he is solid to defeat him. Generally, you can't get behind him, so try to have him approach from an angle or something. Anyways, when you win, the Power Star will appear. Go into it to find a hallway. Go through the opposite door to reach the next room. There, turn left to find a black brick block. Smash it now. Before using the yellow switch below it, try to find a Mario cap somewhere in this level, or lose Wario's -- Wario is the slowest character in the game, and this is a time-based Switch Star. Once you do, step on the aforementioned yellow switch to make a Star appear in a glass sphere. Go around the room to it -- long jumping is fastest, so you know. ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) The 100-Coin Star ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) For this 100-Coin Star, I recommend NOT coming on Episode #1, so as to have the staircase to more easily access the second floor. Anyhow, you'll get a lot of Coins from enemies. There are five or so Boos in the mansion, which is 25 Coins. There are some Scuttlebugs (3 Coins each) around the outside, as is a yellow block. You'll find a Blue Coin switch (20 Coins total) on the third floor, in the Luigi painting room. You'll find a Boo in there as well. You can go outside of there to find the roof, which has some Coins of its own up there. While you're in the mansion, you can try for some of the Red Coins as well. If Coins are lacking there, go to the mansion basement through the smaller building outside. Defeat the Mr. I in the entrance room for another five Coins, then you'll have to defeat some Boos in the merry-go-round room. That should be enough. Whether you can use the world in Luigi's painting for more, should they SOMEHOW still be lacking, isn't yet known to me. Anyhow, I'll give you a "fuller" guide to it. Use of Wario is recommended; using Episode #1 is NOT. In the room in which you arrive, there will be a Scuttlebug nearby. Defeat it and go down the right fork for another Scuttlebug and two or three Goombas. That should bring you up to 8 ~ 9 Coins. Ignore other Scuttlebugs here; they are worthless. Also be sure to smash the wooden crate near where you enter and go down the right fork. You'll find a trail of Coins on a thin ledge down there. Continue to the next room. Here, you'll pretty much want to grab all 8 Red Coins, break every brick, and defeat all of the Goombas, the Scuttlebug, and the Mr. I. That's pretty much it for there; go through the door to the left of where you hit the ground to find the toxic maze. Before dropping in the hole, grab some Coins nearby. Then drop into the hole and go to the ? block ledge. Become metal if you're using Wario, then head on over to the Blue Coin switch nearby. Use it to obtain up to 8 Blue (40 regular) Coins; get at least two or three to ensure you make it, okay? Defeat some of the enemies here to get some Coins, then go through the door to the black hole area (where you had to grab onto the wire bridge). Here, climb along the bridge to the right to find some Coins, then head on over and drop to the left ledge. On the lower ground, go forward, towards the hill, and defeat the Scuttlebug and the Swooper, grabbing as many Coins as you can. Then go up the hill with the boulders, grabbing the Coins from the left as you go. Then go through the door nearby to the underground lake. Here, you'll find a few Goombas at the bottom. If you're not Wario, ignore the next two statements. If you ARE Wario, use the ? block nearby for a Power Flower, then go underwater to the ! switch. Stand on it and go through the opened door to find a Scuttlebug. You also go onto the central island of the lake for some Coins. That's the fullest trail of Coins I can give. After defeating those three, you'll have to fight a Big Bully. Much like before, you'll just have to punch it into the lava. Get on it when possible and start riding. As you do, stay out of the way of the fire jets as they come on up. At the end, get onto the platform. Proceed up to the big log. This is a balance kind of thing -- you want the log to go left (assuming you're facing the way you came from, the Bully platform), so stay somewhat on the left side to get it to roll left. Keep an eye on your character as well -- we don't need to fall into the lava. Once the log stops at the other platform, follow the ledge to your Star. ------------------------------------- Method #2 - Requires Mario or his cap ------------------------------------- Upon arriving, turn around. You should see a platform here. Long jump to it and you'll also find a ? block. Bop it for a feather. From here, triple jump and start flying. Go to the opposite corner (as in "go forward from the start") to find your Star. You'll have to fly and be careful of the tight space you have to turn in, unless you approach from another angle (how about the Bully platform?), and also beware the fire jets. Also, a while into your journey, you'll find a Bully. Get rid of it and you'll also notice a high ledge ahead. Cautiously approach it, because the wall next to it can fall over to smash you. Jump up the ledge after the wall retracts and then continue. You'll come to some floating platforms, after which are some fire streams, a Bully, and a pole. Now, to the Silver Stars! -- Go towards the portion of the area where the original Big Bully was. From there, sort of head east to an island with Mr. I on it, as well as the Silver Star. -- North of there is a hill-like ledge. Ride to its peak for a Silver Star. -- Go back towards the Bully platforms and continue past them to the corner to find a Silver Star on an inclined ledge. -- Go to a similar island between the volcano and fire platform for another Silver Star. -- Go to the area behind where you start, in the corner. Hit the block nearby first, quickly ground-pound the switch, then quickly get on the Green Shell. You'll find a backtracking trail of Blue Coins, totalling around 45, depending on how many you get. (You don't even NEED the switch, but it makes things easier.) After that, you can pretty much get rid of the enemies and grab the random Yellow/Red Coins throughout the level to finish. Go through this long tunnel to the other side and surface in that room. Here, you'll find Bowser's sub nearby. Head to the side of the room opposite the tunnel entrance to find a ledge with a ? block. If you're Mario, use it to float onto the sub for your Star. Otherwise, head to the right and onto the ledge to find a ! switch. Use it to make some bricks appear nearby leading up to the sub. Either way, on top of the sub, you'll find your Star. ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Episode #2 - Chests in the Current ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Upon arriving, swim down, towards the ground far below. Anyhow, open the chest near the clam, the one in the seaweed, and the one on the ledge next to the whirlpool in that order. A Star will then appear for you to grab ... assuming you don't get sucked into the whirlpool. ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Episode #3 - Pole-Jumping for Red Coins ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) For this episode, it is highly recommended you first defeat Bowser in the Fire Sea. It is not impossible if you haven't, but you'll be using Mario's floating ability a bit too much for convenience. Upon arriving, swim down, towards the ground far below. As you do, beware the whirlpool down there -- if you get sucked in, you'll die. Anyhow, closer to the bottom, look around to find a hole through the wall. Go through this long tunnel to the other side and surface in the sub's (probably old) room. As this is a Red Coin episode, you'll probably know that I'm about to make a list. -- Head to the side of the room opposite the tunnel entrance to find a ? block. Mario can use it for the purposes of this episode, which is an alternate method I won't cover. Anyhow, from there, go to the right to find a ! switch on the ground. Stand on it and proceed further along the ledge to find a block staircase. Climb up it to find a Red Coin. -- Now, there is a pole on the above rafters moving to and from the direction of the tunnel entrance. Get on this pole and properly position yourself as it moves for THREE Red Coins. -- Continue along the next pole to another semi-caged platform with a Red Coin. -- Ride back to the first platform (the single Red Coin one) and use the other pole. Jump to the next pole when first possible and jump off onto the platform on the way. Ride all of the poles here for the remaining THREE Red Coins. Now your Power Star will appear. Go on over to it. ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Episode #4 - Through the Jet Stream ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) There was an episode in Jolly Roger Bay named this, too. Anyhow, closer to the bottom, look around to find a hole through the wall. Go through this long tunnel to the other side. At the end of the tunnel, go forward to find some rings rising from a jet of air nearby. Have Wario swim downward and through five of these to make a Star appear. We can't get it yet. Now just jump into the water and head on over to the Star. ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Episode #5 - Koopa Surfin' Switch Star ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) You'll need to use Wario for this episode, but only temporarily. (Of course, it won't really matter whether you switch after that point or not.) Upon arriving, swim on over to the land area nearby with the black and yellow blocks. Break all of the black blocks; one has a switch beneath it. Ignore it for a moment and hit the yellow block nearby to reveal a Green Shell. Now, QUICKLY stand on the yellow switch, then start riding the Green Shell over to the location of the newly-appeared Star. Anyhow, closer to the bottom, look around to find a hole through the wall. Go through this long tunnel to the other side and surface in the sub's (probably old) room. Go to the portion of the room opposite the tunnel entrance. On the ledge there, you'll find a ? block. Grab the Power Flower from it to become invisible, then proceed into the waters nearby. Follow it around and through five rings to get a Star. ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) The 100-Coin Star ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Any episode is okay for this one, though use of Wario can provide a few extra Coins from the black bricks near the start. Anyhow, upon arriving, head on over to those black bricks. Shatter them if you can for a few Coins, then hit the yellow block and ride the Green Shell around this portion of the area to defeat a few enemies for a few Coins. Then swim underwater, to the whirlpool area (but not into the whirlpool). Do some major numismatics (Coin-collecting), then proceed to the submarine's area on the other end of the tunnel. Do a bit of Coin collecting, if any, under the water. Out of the water, all that's really left are the Red Coins and the Blue Coin switch. You'll note the owl tree on the way. Ignore it and cross the gap in front of you, then turn left and go up the incline. There, you'll find the icy platform with the Bully on it. With this episode, I actually recommend doing an initial long jump at your opponent before engaging in fisticuffs with the beast, as, it usually knocks him right into the "icy lava" (the super-cold ice water you cannot swim in). Should the long jump fail, just either try it again or punch your opponent. For the latter, I'd prefer you keep your back to the edge of the incline from which you came. However, for Yoshi, it releases a Power Flower that makes him a Goomba-barbequing machine! (In other words, Yoshi gets to breath fire as much as desired for a specific time interval.) Once you have fire breath, face back towards where you came from and go there. You should see a bunch of ice cubes nearby. Jump on the lowest stack, then jump towards the one beside you (three cubes tall) with the Star in it. While in mid-air, breathe fire at it (the top one is the minimum requirement). As the water rises, go towards the Star -- you can't directly reach it yet, but we're getting there. As you go to the Star, you'll find two small platforms next to a bigger one. Go from the small platforms to the big platform, then head from one arrow block to the next, being wary of falling down -- they'll actually move beneath you, so jumping is discouraged. Upon arriving, turn left and you'll find the tower that the Star was on in the first episode. Go around this tower to the ramp and into the cannon at the top. Aim towards the corner diagonal from you -- you'll want to hit inside of the cage, so aim fairly high. Once you successfully land in there, swim underwater and through the tunnel to the town area. Surface in there and we'll begin. We'll just assume that the Red Coin Buddy is facing north, to the steeple, the entrance tunnel is to the southeast, and the cage is to the northwest, to provide some cardinal directions. Additionally, those using Yoshi might want to grab the Luigi hat, if any, nearby. Otherwise, you can't finish this... -- You see the bridge the Red Coin Buddy is facing? Swim beneath the platform at the other end of the bridge to find a Red Coin. -- Go to the bottom of the southeast corner (not into the tunnel) to find a crystal. Aim towards the corner diagonal from you -- you'll want to hit inside of the cage, so aim fairly high. Once you successfully land in there, swim underwater and through the tunnel to the town area. Swim straight down from the tunnel grating to find the water-lowering crystal. Grab the Luigi hat if needed, then head north to the ? block. Face AWAY from the Star and hit the ? block. This one can be problematic if you have troubles finding all the Coins you need. You'll see why shortly. Mario is, as such, almost required for this. Anyhow, the basic strategy applies. Since the mountain is so linear, there is no real need for me to say much. Just go up the mountain, defeating every single enemy and grabbing every single Coin possible. Don't immediately go into the slide room from Episode #4, okay. That will be too tough for the Star. At the top, use the ? block to get a feather and fly around, collecting all of the possible Coins from the rings. Be sure to go back regularly and grab another feather. Now, here's our problem. What if you didn't grab enough Coins (as in, threw enemies over the edge instead of killing them on the mountain)? Well, you only have one choice after scouring the mountain (again, this method is not very desireable). You'll have to go to the slide and collect Coins on the way down. There is around 45, so you'll have plenty to grab. However, you'll want to go at a very low speed the whole time, because you'll be moving, even when the Star pops up. Go into it to turn to a smaller size. Next, ground-pound on the pillar closest to the wall three times to find a Mushroom. Use it to grow large, then quickly go around this platform and smash all of the Piranha Plants here. There are six total. If you run out of Mushroom power before defeating all six, just go around and punch them or eat their fire and blow it at them (the latter is for Yoshi). After all of the weeds are gone, you'll get your Power Star. ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Episode #2 - The Tip-Top of the Huge Island ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Start this area huge (left painting). Upon arriving, turn left to find an island with a tree on it. Get on over to that island and climb up the tree, facing your back to the higher ledge, then jumping. Up there, go left and along the path to find a pipe. Jump into it to become smaller. When you're smaller, go back the way you came to soon find some ledges to your left. Climb up both of them, being wary of the purple Bob-omb on the second one. After avoiding it, go along the path and the narrow ledge, then some more path to find a yellow block. Hit it to find the Star. ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Episode #3 - Rematch with Koopa the Quick ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) You'll need to use Mario (through character or cap) for this episode. Begin by going through the left painting. Upon arriving, turn left to find an island with a tree on it. Get on over to that island and climb up the tree, facing your back to the higher ledge, then jumping. Up there, go left and along the path to find a pipe. Jump into it to become smaller. When you're smaller, go back the way you came and down the incline. You should reach an area with some huge Goombas and Koopa the Quick walking around. Speak with the latter and begin the race. Go back towards the pipe, while running, then go past it. At the edge, turn right and go forward and down the ledges for a bit. Once you reach the narrow bridge, run at an oblique angle so as to counteract the force of the wind. On the other side is the flag. Touch it to get your Star once Koopa the Quick arrives. ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Episode #4 - Klepto the Condor ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Start the area small (go through the right painting). Upon arriving, turn left to find an island. Go on over to it and climb the tree to find the owl. Grab onto it and begin flying. Now, our destination is somewhat complicated to find, as far as description goes. Assume where you started the level from was the southeast corner. Go to the southwest corner, then north some to find a lone floating ledge. Land on there. Now, eventually, Klepto the Condor will fly over. Jump at his legs to force him to let go of the Star and let it fall on this ledge. ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Episode #5 - Wiggler's Red Coins ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) I'd use Mario for this level. It isn't required, but, with where we're going, a wall jump just might save you. Plus, it makes it easier to get one of the Red Coins and a 1-Up Mushroom. Additionally, start this level small (right painting). There are two methods to get where we're going upon your arrival. I'm the type to prefer the owl, as usual. Get onto the island to your left, climb up the tree, and grab onto the owl. When you start flying, head over the large wall to the beach area. Now, next to the mountain, you'll find a curving path that is about 1/4 of a circle. It has a few Coins on it and, if looked at from the proper angle, leads to a hole in the wall. Try to land on the path (ground-pounding works well) from the owl. If you fail, get up there by defeating the Koopa nearby, then riding his shell up the mountain to the path. Either way, get inside when you can. Inside, you'll want to start by getting the first few Coins on your right, then hopping along the path to the ? block, grabbing all seven Red Coins on the way. Once you reach the ? block, bop it to find a Power Flower. Float across the room towards the final Red Coin (and the 1-Up Mushroom). The Star should appear then. Ground-pound it, basically. ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Episode #6 - Make Wiggler Squirm ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Start this area huge (left painting). Up there, go left and along the path to find a pipe. Nearby are some ledges. Get up them and go along the narrow ledge. Continue forward to the watery mountain peak. There, ground-pound the peak to cause a cave-in and some leaking. Go back down the mountain, along the previously-taken path, to the pipe. Go into it to become smaller, then go back to the mountaintop, avoiding the purple Bob-omb as you go. At the top, drop into the hole to find a Wiggler that is not exactly pleased. (Are they ever? I mean, consider all of the Mario games, and in few, if any, there has never been an instance where an in-game Wiggler was not angered at SOMETHING.) Anyhow, the main concept of the battle is simple: ground-pound Wiggler's head quite a bit. As you succeed more and more, Wiggler will get angrier and faster. Just keep it up; use the twenty (or so) Coins around the arena for health restoration. At the end of the battle, grab the Star. ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Episode #7 - Switch Star on the Island ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Start this level small (right painting). Then enter the lower level of Wiggler's cavern to find the Red Coins and the Blue Coin switch. Since it is icy here, I prefer the jumping tackle: dash and attack while dashing. This will knock him back a fair deal. Once he hangs off of the edge, punch him. On the opposite ledge, turn right and head over the gap to be caught by a gust of air. Use it to hit the in-air Red Coin. The next Red Coin will be above the icy pool of water ahead. Grab it and go to the Bullies' ledge for a fourth Red Coin. Use the movements of the second and fourth ice pillars to get one Red Coin each, then continue to the platform ahead. There, ascend to the top and use the ? block to reveal a Power Flower. Grab it and return to ground level to find a set of bars. Go through them for a Red Coin. Go back through and head towards the lowest part of the platform for a Mario cap. Grab it and return to the previously-used ? block. Minigame Stuff**************************SM64DS_5************************** +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++ ++ ++ Section I - Some Notes **SM64DS_51** ++ ++ ++ +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ To play the minigames, you must either go to the Rec Room from the main menu, speak with the Toad there in-game, or opt to go there after catching a minigame key-holding rabbit. Anyway, you'll then be allowed to play certain groups of minigames. Each character (Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Wario) has their own group of minigames, which cannot be played unless that character is unlocked on one of the game cartridge's files. Even after obtaining a character, the majority of their minigames will remain locked. To unlock them, you must find the minigame keys rabbits throughout the castle hold. Their locations are listed in Section II. Each rabbit corresponds to a certain character and only that character's rabbits will appear at a given time. (Mario cannot catch Yoshi's rabbits, for example.) To catch a rabbit, you must either grab it or swallow it, depending on who you're using at the time. Once you get the rabbit, you'll obtain the minigame key and unlock a new minigame. Minigame rules and tips are listed in Section III. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++ ++ ++ Section II - Rabbit Locations **SM64DS_52** ++ ++ ++ +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ O===========================================================================O | Section 1 - Yoshi's Rabbits **SM64DS_521** | O===========================================================================O All of Yoshi's rabbits are of a yellowish or light-brown coloration. Three of the rabbits are found in front of the castle, right outside of it. When facing the castle entrance, turn to the right and go forward. Across the bridge, in the flower beds, you'll find a rabbit. When facing the castle entrance, turn left and go along the dirt path to the miniature hedge maze. You'll find a rabbit in here somewhere. In the basement area, with the maze-like hallways, there is a rabbit down there somewhere. Once you drain the castle's moat, go into the newly-dried moat and look around for another rabbit. O===========================================================================O | Section 2 - Mario's Rabbits **SM64DS_522** | O===========================================================================O All of Mario's rabbits are of a reddish or pinkish coloration. When facing the castle entrance, go left and towards waterfall. A rabbit is roaming around there. In the room with the Jolly Roger Bay painting, you'll find a rabbit. In the basement area, where the maze-like hallways are, you'll find two rabbits roaming around. After draining the castle moat, go there and look around for another rabbit. On the castle upper floor is another rabbit, generally found hanging around the staircase. A rabbit hangs out in the mirror room of the upper floor of the castle. It is the same area where you'll find the entrance to Snowman's Land and the entrance to the area where you find and save Wario. O===========================================================================O | Section 3 - Luigi's Rabbits **SM64DS_523** | O===========================================================================O All of Luigi's rabbits are of a green coloration. Go to the area where you start the game each time you start it up, then turn left and head forward some to a rabbit. Go to the room with the Bob-omb Battlefield painting to find a rabbit. Go to the castle courtyard (go through an unmarked door on the ground floor and chase the Boo). Outside, backflip to the higher ledge above you for a rabbit. Head to the room with the Mario painting; it is behind the Rec Room and you need eight Power Stars to get there. Head to the basement area and ground-pound the two pillars if you haven't yet done so. Once you have, exit this room and come back to find a rabbit in the middle tunnel area. In the hallway on the upper floor, you'll find this li'l critter running around. This is by far the most arduous and time-taking to get. You'll need to get all 150 Power Stars and go to the cannon in front of the castle. Shoot up to the roof of the castle to find it. O===========================================================================O | Section 4 - Wario's Rabbits **SM64DS_524** | O===========================================================================O All of Mario's rabbits are of a brown coloration. When facing the castle entrance, go right, across the bridge, then left to find the ramp into the moat. Look around here; the rabbit is hiding somewhere... Go to the castle courtyard (go through an unmarked door on the ground floor and chase the Boo). Outside, check the wall near the fountain. You'll find a rabbit in the room with the Whomp's Fortress painting. Another rabbit is somewhere in the hall-maze of the basement. On the upper floor, head into the room with the paintings to go to Tiny-Huge Island to find another rabbit. You'll find a rabbit running around on the upper floor. Also on the upper floor, jump into the alcove on the wall with the Rainbow Ride hole in the ground to find this rabbit. O===========================================================================O | Section 5 - White Rabbit Details **SM64DS_525** | O===========================================================================O After collecting 80 Power Stars, you will probably begin to notice white, glowing rabbits popping up in locations, as described above, that the other rabbits would pop up. Although these rabbits do not yield keys to the minigames of the Rec Room, they serve a more valuable purpose. There are eight of these rabbits and, if you catch them all, you'll get a key. This key unlocks the unmarked door in the character-swapping room. Inside, you'll find a Power Star. It is worth your time to try and find these li'l buggers -- you'll actually need to get this Power Star (and all of the other 149) to get one of Luigi's rabbits. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++ ++ ++ Section III - Minigame Details **SM64DS_53** ++ ++ ++ +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ I'll go ahead and mention that the high scores in this section are merely for display. Tips: - Try to recognize certain features of characters. Cap color is crucial. Yoshi is fairly unique. Luigi's chin is more pointed than Mario's, and his eyes are narrower. Correct selections net you five seconds and the next level. Tips: - Generally, memorizing only one or two of the Wiggler's body segments will work out (mathematically, anyhow). Since there are four combos per the four segments, there are 256 possible Wigglers. For each segment you memorize, you will cut down that number by 1/4! Those combos are ranked like that, worst (aside from nothing) to best. You can choose to discard some cards (tap the undesired cards and tap "Hit") or to hold them all. You can also up your bet, if you're that confident. Luigi will do the same for his hand.
