What's New -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Version 1.0 (7/13/10): The first version. ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 2. Introduction -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= League Bowling is a rather straightforward bowling game for the Neo Geo. It does not have anything particularly exciting aside from the main regulation mode (standard 10-pin bowling), and a couple of additional game modes which are the same except for higher scores for Strikes/Spares. The animations of your character saying "Let's Bowl!" at the start of the game, and when selecting your ball at the beginning, are neat. It also supports up to four players (provided you have two Neo Geo consoles and games, and the necessary adapters. Other than that, the game is very much basic for the Neo Geo and I would say you are not missing much by skipping over this game, despite it being so simple that anyone can enjoy it. ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 3. Overview -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ========== Game Modes ========== After the title screen, you will go to a menu where the three game modes are listed: Regulation: Play a standard 10-frame round of bowling. Flash: In this mode, above the pins are five columns with point values and a cursor moving across them. The top point value is earned if you get a Strike and the bottom value is for a Spare. Other than these bonus points, the game is exactly the same as Regulation. Strike 90: In this mode, you will get 90 points for a Strike and 60 points for a Spare. Otherwise, it is just like Regulation mode. Once you make a selection, you will go to a screen where a woman shows the controls for this part of the pre-game process. If you have played this game previously and saved your data, you can load it at this time. Otherwise, you will be able to choose if you are left or right-handed (Left/Right on joystick), and the weight of the ball using Up/Down (8-15 pounds). You can then save this data for easy loading later. Once this is done, the game begins. ================ General Gameplay ================ In this game, you are shown two meters before throwing the ball. The first is a control meter. It has a dash in the center (a straight throw), where if you stop the cursor to the sides, it will cause the ball to spin a certain amount. The farther to the side you stop it at, the tighter the ball will spin/turn. This is most effective with lighter balls; heavy balls are better for straight throwing. The second meter is a power meter. You will only get one chance to stop it, since it will fill and empty once before automatically throwing the ball for you. Of course, the more filled the meter is, the stronger your throw will be. After you set the power, the ball will be thrown. In addition to the two meters, you can also use Left/Right on the joystick to actually move your player to the sides. That way you can align your planned throws a bit better. This is especially helpful if you are a fan of putting spin on your balls or want to get a straight shot for a specific pin with little room for error. In the game of bowling, you have 10 frames with two shots in each frame. There are 10 pins, and you receive one point for each pin you knock over. If you manage to knock them all over on your first shot in the current frame, it is called a Strike (X). If you knock them all over using both shots, it is called a Spare (/). The exact way these are scored will be described below. The tenth and final frame is the most interesting one of all. If you get a Strike or Spare in this frame, you will get another turn. In theory, you can throw a maximum of three balls in the tenth frame, so three Strikes or a Spare plus one additional throw. Once that frame ends, the final score across the previous frames is tallied and the game is over. ======= Scoring ======= In bowling, you get a point for each pin you knock over in a frame. If you knock them all over in the first throw of a frame, it is a Strike. If it takes both throws to knock down all ten pins, it is a Spare. However, you earn additional points if you get a Strike or Spare, as follows: Strike = 10 points + score of following two throws Example: Frame 1 = Strike Frame 2 = 6 (throw 1), 2 (throw 2) Total = Frame 1 = 10 + (6 + 2) = 18 Frame 2 = 6 + 2 = 8 Total = 18 + 8 = 26 Spare = 10 points + score of following one throw Example: Frame 1 = Spare Frame 2 = 9 (throw 1), 0 (throw 2) Total = Frame 1 = 10 + 8 = 18 Frame 2 = 8 + 0 = 8 Total = 18 + 8 = 26 The maximum score in a single regulation game is 300 points (12 Strikes). The maximum you can earn for a Strike in a frame is 30 points (for example, get a Strike in Frame 1 followed by Strikes in Frames 2 and 3; use the formula above). Likewise, the most you can get for a Spare is 20 (Spare in Frame 1 and a Strike for Frame 2). ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 5.
