I've put quite a bit of time and effort into writing this guide, and would LOVE

/3. HOW TO READ THIS GUIDE\__________________________________________________
/\__________________________/__________________________________________________\
With your eyes opened, preferably. :P
Because this guide likely uses text tables and some low-end art, please use
a monospaced font. Courier New, Andale Mono (my personal favorite), and the
Mac-exclusive Monaco are but three such fonts... and these three are free!
To test your font, simply click between two characters -- combinations of
I's, periods, commas, and apostrophes work best -- and drag your mouse up or
down to the next line. Should the highlight meet corner to corner, you're good
to go. (Zoom into the document should you believe the text is too small; do NOT
make the selected text bigger.)

========================{ 0.2 (Released on 2005.9.16) }=========================
SWEET MERCIFUL CRAP! AN UPDATE! (And it only took me three whole years.)
Seriously, I figured this guide was in for a much needed tune-up. Many of
the gaps I had open have been filled. I've added the following information:
- I've added more detailed information on fielder control.
- All the pitchers' offensive stats are now listed.
- Added all four default All-Star rosters -- both boys' and girls' teams.
========================{ 0.1 (Released on 2002.9.16) }=========================
First version released. Loads of data that is currently missing will be filled
in later on in my life... whenever that will be.
___________
/5. OPTIONS\_________________________________________________________________
/\___________/_________________________________________________________________\
What you see on the main menu is what you get, folks.
==============================={ 1 PLAYER GAME }================================
Starts a campaign where you select one of the twelve available teams. In this
mode, you compete against the other eleven teams, always playing as the
visitors. Win or lose, you'll receive a 16-character password after each game
(except the last) which can be used to continue your progress. I'd only suggest
writing them down after winning, as losses will not count against you.
==============================={ 2 PLAYER GAME }================================
One person versus another using the same teams within a three-game series.
Player 1 is the visiting team, player 2 is the home team. Like in real
baseball, if one team wins the first two, the other can attempt to avoid a sweep
by winning the third.
==============================={ ALL-STAR GAME }================================
More information can be found under the chapter with the same name. 1P and 2P
modes are available, following the same home and visiting assignments as the
non-all-star games.
==============================={ SPECTATOR MODE }===============================
It's just like watching your favorite Major League team on TV -- only you get to
control which two teams play, and the batting order and starting pitcher for
each. Once the game starts, grab a couple hot dogs, some nachos, a beer (soda
for the kids), and watch the game unfold before your eyes. Hope you can afford
the down payment for all that food... :)
=================================={ PASSWORD }==================================
Lets you pick up your campaign from where you left off. Alas, the password
system is not gender-neutral. You cannot enter a girls' code when in boys' mode
(the main menu selector is a baseball), nor can you enter a boys' code in girls'
mode (selector is a heart).
____________
/6. CONTROLS\________________________________________________________________
/\____________/________________________________________________________________\
I've broken this down into a total of three different sections: Navigating
through the available teams and switching the line-ups; the pitcher vs. batter;
and action scenes. For the action sequences, the arrow pad is used in relation
to the bases on the field:
Second base _ [UP]
| |
___|_|___
Third base [LEFT] |___(_)___| [RIGHT] First base
| |
[DOWN] |_| Home plate
_________________
_____/A. LINE-UP CARDS\______________________________________________________
/_____\_________________/______________________________________________________\
__________________
__________/a. Team selection\________________________________________________
/__________\__________________/________________________________________________\
==========================={ ARROW PAD [UP], [DOWN] }===========================
Scrolls through the available teams.
- In 1P mode, you select your own team, as well as an opponent from the teams
you haven't yet defeated.
- In 2P mode, player 1 selects a team, then player 2 selects one of the
remaining eleven squads.
- In the All-Star mode, this determines switches which league gets assigned
to which player.
========================={ ARROW PAD [LEFT], [RIGHT] }==========================
Views the current team's roster, switching to fielders and pitchers, respec-
tively. Pressing [UP] or [DOWN] selects the next available team's fielding
roster. You can't do this in All-Star mode.
===================={ (START) BUTTON -- CONTROLLER 1 ONLY }=====================
Selects current team or league assignment in All-Star.
___________________
__________/b. Line-up changes\_______________________________________________
/__________\___________________/_______________________________________________\
==========================={ ARROW PAD [UP], [DOWN] }===========================
Moves the cursor in the respective directions.
=============================={ ARROW PAD [LEFT] }==============================
Points the cursor to the position listing. It's a good idea that you check your
line-up so that your players can do well in their assigned position.
============================={ ARROW PAD [RIGHT] }==============================
Points the arrow back to the batting order.
***NOTE*** -- Neither [LEFT] nor [RIGHT] are used when selecting a pitcher.
================================={ (A) BUTTON }=================================
Selects a player or position to change, which will be highlighted with a star.
After selecting the first position or player to change, pressing (A) while the
arrow's pointing to the desired target confirms the swap.
When asked to select a starting pitcher, pressing (A) designates who gets
sent to the mound, whose name is highlighted by "Pi". (Mmm... pi.)
================================={ (B) BUTTON }=================================
Cancels a line-up change in progress if a player/position's been highlighted.
Changes can also be cancelled by pressing the arrow pad in the opposite
direction the arrow's facing: [RIGHT] cancels a position change; [LEFT] cancels
a player change.
===================={ (START) BUTTON -- CONTROLLER 1 ONLY }=====================
Confirms your starting line-up and starting pitcher. If in 2P mode, then you'll
have to press (START) after the second player's comfortable with his/her
selections.
___________________________________
__________/c. Line-up changes (All-Star game)\_______________________________
/__________\___________________________________/_______________________________\
Changing your all-star roster is done similarly to a regular game, but requres a
couple extra steps before you actually start playing.
To drop a player in exchange for another one, select the victim, er...
player you don't want with (A). Then, you will be presented with a six line-up
cards -- one for each team in your league. Use [LEFT] and [RIGHT] to scroll
through the teams, and [UP] and [DOWN] to choose players.
Pressing (A) confirms your exchange, while pressing (B) nullifies it.
Players with a star next to their name means (s)he's already on the team. This
applies to both fielder and pitcher selection.
______________________________
_____/B. PITCHING/BATTING SEQUENCES\_________________________________________
/_____\______________________________/_________________________________________\
The essence of the game: The pitcher vs. the batter.
____________
__________/a. Pitching\______________________________________________________
/__________\____________/______________________________________________________\
================================={ ARROW PAD }==================================
Moves pitcher from side to side on the rubber (that white thing sitting on the
pitcher's mound).
During the ball's flight toward home plate, using the arrow pad can alter
the speed and direction of the ball. Useful for catching the batter off-guard.
================================={ (A) BUTTON }=================================
Pressing (A) will initially pitch the ball. If the ball is not hit into play,
and there is a baserunner trying to steal, the screen will jump to an overhead
view of the infield from behind home plate. When this occurs, press (A) and the
arrow pad relative to the base you'd like to throw to.
================================={ (B) BUTTON }=================================
Rather than pitch the ball, you can attempt to pick off a baserunner... or at
least feign a throw and scare them back to returning to the base they're
standing on. Pressing (B) will have the screen jump back to the aforementioned
overhead view of the infield; to throw the ball, press (A) and the arrow pad
relative to the desired base.
_____________________
_____/b. Batters & runners\__________________________________________________
/_____\_____________________/__________________________________________________\
================================={ ARROW PAD }==================================
Shifts your batter's position in the batter's box.
================================={ (A) BUTTON }=================================
Swings the bat. Be careful not to overswing on balls well outside the strike
zone -- er... balls that don't fly within the width of home plate. Also, by
simply tapping (A), you can attempt a bunt. I recommend against bunting with
any two-strike count, 'cause it's strike three if you bunt the ball foul.
==========================={ (B) BUTTON + ARROW PAD }===========================
Attempt to steal a base, but you actually have to select which base to steal
with the arrow pad. Should you have second thoughts about it, then press (A)
and the arrow pad relative to the base you want your runner(s) to return to.
____________________
_____/c. Changing players\___________________________________________________
/_____\____________________/___________________________________________________\
While you're looking the pitcher/batter screen, if you press (START), a black
text field will pop up between the pitcher's mound and home plate. This is an
effective pause function against the computer during your turn to bat. To back
out, press (START) once again.
But should you decide to change your pitcher, check up on your fielder(s),
want a new batter, or if you've forgotten how fast your runner on second is,
then you can make the changes with (A) or (B) while the game is "paused".
***NOTE*** -- If engaging in a 2P game, both controllers can use this function.
If one player presses (START), then the other can make a substitution,
or cancel the menu altogether... and likely tick you off.
================================={ (A) BUTTON }=================================
- Fielding team: Lets you check up on your pitcher. Should you believe that
his/her pitching has lost is bite, you can bring in a
reliever from those available.
- Batting team: Gives you the option to bring in a pinch hitter. Probably
best used when getting ready to replace a pitcher.
Press (B) to back out without making any changes.
Once a player's been taken out, an X will appear next to his/her name,
telling (s)he unable to re-enter the game, but will become available for the
next.
================================={ (B) BUTTON }=================================
Even more options to get the most out of your roster.
- Fielding team: Fielder management. There are two ways to utilize this:
(a) You can replace a fielder with a player sitting on your
bench, or (b) you can swap the positions of two active
players -- switching your left fielder around with your
shortstop, for instance.
- Batting team: Brings in a pinch runner. Again, best used for getting rid
of a pitcher should (s)he get on base, but how you use it
is completely your judgment.
Again, pressing (B) backs out of this menu without making any changes.
Same story as above -- you take out a player, (s)he is out for what's left
of the current game, but can be used in the next one.

_____/C. ACTION SEQUENCES\___________________________________________________
/_____\____________________/___________________________________________________\
Once the ball is put into play, the view changes from behind the batter to an
overhead view of the stadium from behind home plate, with the ball being the
central part of the camera's attention. Depending on the circumstances, the
fielders will be controlled as follows:
- Pitcher: Always controllable when the ball is hit in fair ter-
ritory. Can also be controlled when the ball is bunted
in foul ground, but it's meaningless as (s)he can't do
anything useful.
- Catcher: Can be controlled if the ball is hit foul, but not bunted;
your pitcher will cover home plate. It IS possible to
catch a foul pop fly, but you'll have much better chances
of being struck by two consecutive bolts of lightning.
- First baseman: Ball is hit somewhere near the rightfield foul line. Your
second baseman will cover at first.
- Second baseman: Ball is fair and hit to the right side of second, where
the shortstop will cover.
- Shortstop: Can be controlled when the ball is hit softly back to the
pitcher. Can also run after the ball when it's been hit
hit to the left side of second.
- Third baseman: Ball is hit somewhere near the leftfield foul line. Your
shortstop will cover at third.
- Outfielders: These players will always be able to chase the ball,
even if the ball doesn't travel past the infield.
____________
__________/a. Fielding\______________________________________________________
/__________\____________/______________________________________________________\
================================={ ARROW PAD }==================================
Alone, this moves your outfielders, pitcher, and one infielder (based on the
circumstances mentioned in the above list) around the diamond.
================================={ (A) BUTTON }=================================
Pressed by itself, the fielder holding the ball will throw to first base. You
can specify which base to throw to when the arrow pad is used in conjunction
with (A)... even first base again.
=================={ (B) BUTTON + ARROW PAD, WITHOUT THE BALL }==================
This game lets you do it all... even dive and jump for a runaway ball! Make a
dazzling play that will be shown on the nightly highlight reel! (Well, they
aren't quite THAT dazzling...)
To dive for the ball, press (B) in conjunction with [LEFT], [RIGHT], or
[DOWN], and your fielder will slide in that direction. This is very useful for
making last-minute attempts to keep the ball in the infield or to rob the batter
of a base hit. Pressing (B) while holding [UP] on the arrow pad will have the
player closest to the ball leap for the ball should it be over his/her head.
Be careful when trying to make one of these spectacular plays, as the ball
can roll behind a misplayed dive or bounce under a badly timed jump.
***NOTE*** -- Alas, neither of these actions can be performed diagonally. Foo.
==============={ (B) BUTTON + ARROW PAD, WHILE HOLDING THE BALL }===============
Runs with ball in hand, though you'll have to select which base to run to.
Useful for tagging out wandering baserunners.
___________
__________/b. Running\_______________________________________________________
/__________\___________/_______________________________________________________\
==========================={ (A) BUTTON + ARROW PAD }===========================
Returns your runner(s) to any base except home plate. Required should your
batter fly out or pop out. You only need to press (A) once; flailing away at it
won't make your runner go faster.
*WARNING!* -- Your runners will only be able to return to the last base they
touch. Thus, if the runner on first reaches second before the catch
is made, your runner's toast; (s)he can't return to first.
==========================={ (B) BUTTON + ARROW PAD }===========================
Run for it! Keep running! Press the arrow pad relative to the base you wish to
run TO... and, if you're fast enough, you might touch 'em all without the ball
ever going into the stands. Again, one press of the button is all you need;
mashing that button repeatedly still won't speed up your baserunners.
___________
/7. SCORING\_________________________________________________________________
/\___________/_________________________________________________________________\
Scoring in this game is the same as it is in real baseball: All players who
make contact with all four bases in a counter-clockwise direction, reaching home
safely, scores a run. Most runs wins. However, there are several different
ways a game can end in `Bad News Baseball`:
First off, the game can end early... even as early as the first inning!
This happens if:
- The visiting (1P) team is ahead by ten runs or more at the end of any full
inning. Thus, the visitors' margin of victory can be anything -- 10 runs,
13 runs, 21 runs...
- The home (2P or computer) attains a lead of ten runs or more before the
third out of the lower half of an inning. Fortunately for the visitors,
the home team's margin of victory can never exceed thirteen runs. In case
you want the math, that means being nine runs ahead, then having the batter
hit a grand slam for four additional runs, with the game ending auto-
matically afterward.

This second example follows common baseball rules; the team with the higher run

Just don't expect to get involved with any marathons. All games in `Bad News
Baseball` end after twelve innings, even if the score is tied.
(This game WAS made in Japan, after all. The Japanese baseball leagues
require ties after long games, since the bulk of the crowd uses public
transportation. It's an aid to both the players and the fans. Just not us
American baseball fans, who prefer sitting through marathon, 24-inning shutouts
and getting home just before the sun rises.)

`Bad News Baseball` also professionally keeps track of stats during the course
of a game. Here's an example of what you might see after four full innings:

For those who don't understand baseball-ese, from left to right, the
abbreviations are defined as follows:
- AB: Number of players to come to the plate. Batters who have been walked
or hit by a pitch are not included in this tally.
- H: Total number of base hits where the batter has safely reached base and
all runners have safely advanced without a defensive booboo.
- 2B: Number of two-base hits (doubles).
- 3B: Number of three-base hits (triples).
- HR: Home runs; "inside the park" home runs -- where the batter rounds all
four bases while the ball is still within the stadium -- are also
included in this tally.
- SB: Tally of bases successfully stolen... without the ball being hit or
the batter walking.
- SO: The number of batters who, while at bat. In the example above, three
Toronto players have been struck out, as well as two Boston players.
- BB: Total number of batters who have reached first base for free -- either
by taking four balls... or taking one ball square in the jaw. Back to
the above example, one Toronto player reached first base this way.
- ER: Errors. Limited to the number of times a fielder's bobbled the ball
conked by the ball and no outs are registered. Overthrows, for some
weird reason, are not included in this tally.
- R: Runs scored by that team. This is the only number that matters.
_____________
/8. THE TEAMS\_______________________________________________________________
/\_____________/_______________________________________________________________\
There are twelve teams vying for the honor of becoming the world champion.
Unfortunately, not all the teams can share the honor at one time. What follows
is a list of all 24 teams' full rosters -- both the boys' and girls' leagues --
and all players' attributes... even the pitchers' offensive numbers.
Shown here are the line-up cards as you'd see them when you initially
select your team... and they're not what I'd consider ideal. Fortunately, you
can change the line-ups to your liking, though some teams will force you to make
the best out of the worst.
***NOTE*** -- You'll have to change the players and positions around when you
start a new solo campaign, return to the campaign via the password
screen, or starting more than one game in the 2P mode.
_______________________
_____/A. READING THE ROSTERS\________________________________________________
/_____\_______________________/________________________________________________\
I will only the phrase "prior season" as a benchmark, since there's no way to
improve or impair a player's stats during the campaign.
=============================={ FIELDERS' STATS }===============================
- Pos: Shows the game's preset field positioning for the players.
Abbreviated to two letters (catchers will be listed as "Ca".)
- BATTER: The player's name. Listed using the default order.
- Avg.: Batting average.
- HR: Home runs hit in the "prior season". A good indication on how
much power can be unleashed on hitting the bat's sweet spot.
- B: Batting position. Righties hit from the left side of the plate
and vice-versa.
- @123SO: Cryptic though it may look, this actually shows a player's field-
ing abilities at certain positions. From left to right, it reads
catcher, first base, second base, third base, shortstop, and
a combined rating for all three outfield posisitions (left-,
center-, and rightfield). From best to worst, the ratings are A,
B, C, and hyphen (or "minus sign").
- A: A player's throwing strength, measured from 1 to 8. You're best
off putting your strongest players in the outfield and behind the
plate.
- R: A player's running speed, also measured from 1 to 8. Not only
does this figure in baserunning, but also running on the field to
retrieve a ball.
=============================={ PITCHERS' STATS }===============================
While each pitcher has his/her own offensive stats -- arm strength, run speed,
and the like -- these are the primary you should focus on.
- PTCHR.: The pitcher's name.
- ERA: Earned Run Average. Has no bearing on the player's abilities as
far as I can tell.
- T: Throwing stance. The first letter -- R or L -- is the pitching
arm. The second -- O or S -- denoted whether the pitcher throws
with an overhand stance, or delivers them from about the height of
his/her hip.
- STR: The pitcher's maximum stamina.
- L, R: Shows how much of a horizontal curve a pitcher can put on the
ball. Rated on a 1 to 8 scale; higher means more curve. Hyphens
denote no ability to break in either (or both) direction(s).
- F: Abbreviation for FORKBALL, this designates how well the speed can
change while in flight. Graded from A to C; players with hypens
in this column can't perform this pitching trick.
*1st NOTE* -- Because your pitcher's tricks will lose pizzazz over a few in-
nings, it's wise to occasionally check up on his/her stamina.
*2nd NOTE* -- Like the real game, be sure to let your starters rest a couple
games. Before you know it, they'll be back in pristine condition.

/9. ALL-STAR GAME\___________________________________________________________
/\_________________/___________________________________________________________\
The All-Star mode isn't all that different from a regular game. The first thing
you'll do is select which league you want to play as -- the Super league in
blue, or the Ultra league in red (pink?). The team affiliations are:
- Super League: Boston, Detroit, Minneapolis, Oakland, Texas, and Toronto.
- Ultra League: Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, St. Louis, and
San Francisco.
After you've assigning which team you're playing as, as well as your opponent's,
the next step is to skim the fat off the default roster, selecting which twenty
players -- a total of fourteen for fielding and hitting, six pitchers -- you
want on your side. This way, you can be a nitpicker and choose only those
people who make your list of the best of the best... or worst of the worst, if
you'd enjoy a challenge.

_____/A. READING THE ROSTERS\________________________________________________
/_____\_______________________/________________________________________________\
Like the rosters for the individual teams, the cards are presented as when you
first see them. However, since I'm too lazy to type out all those letters and
numbers denoting their fielding abilities, running speed, blah, blah, blah,
these cards have ben truncated, showing only the following:
=============================={ FIELDERS' STATS }===============================
- Pos: Shows the game's preset field positioning for the players.
- BATTER: You probably already know what this is.
- Team: An abbreviation relevant to team the player's representing.
=============================={ PITCHERS' STATS }===============================
This is even going to be shorter than the fielders' cards.
- PTCHR.: Again, you should know what this is.
- Team: The team which this player is representing.

I was planning on adding more information, but this is all I'm planting here for
the time being.
========================={ NO HITS BESIDES HOME RUNS? }=========================
The scoreboard in centerfield -- whenever you can hit the ball in that direc-
tion -- will have the usual tally of runs, hits, and errors in the line score.
The numbers in the runs (R) and errors (E) column will be accurate up to the
current half of the current inning. However, the numbers within the hits (H)
column will only show the total number of home runs hit by either team.

Time for the obligatory "thank you" section...
================================={ RESOURCES }==================================
- World of Nintendo
* Having a "copy" of the game's manual on their site.
- "tsr"
* Same reason.
================================{ CONTRIBUTORS }================================
{1} Tecmo of America
* For the release of the game, and the code for girls' league. (Yes,
around the time I'd purchased the game, I spent MONTHS asking for the
code.)
