Captain Ed for NES Copyright 1989 CBS/Sony Group FAQ by DagothUrReturns (dur) ---------- DISCLAIMER ---------- This game is written totally in Japanese, which I speak very little of. Therefore, I've taken some creative license when it comes to the names of things in the game since I can't read most of them and I have no access to a manual or any other source of information on this game. That being said, if you have experience with this game, or speak Japanese and would like to help, please send me an email using the address in the contact section. ----------------- TABLE OF CONTENTS ----------------- ED01 ..... Legal/Contact -------- CONTROLS (ED01) -------- D-pad: Move ship, navigate menus A button: Fire weapon, confirm menu selection B button: Use hammer Select button: Access inventory/loadout screen Start button: Pause game (clean pause) -------------- GAME MECHANICS (ED02) -------------- Captain Ed is a classic shoot-em-up game. You fly your ship through a vertically scrolling field as enemies fly down from the top of the screen in an attempt to end your life. The object of the game is to progress through each stage killing enemies and playing minigames. Once you get enough money for the stage's key item, kill enough enemies, and get the save code for that level, you'll be warped to the boss. What makes this game unique are the tiles on the bottom of the playing field. They come in several different colours. Green tile: Can safely be passed over with no ill effects Yellow tile: Can be passed over, but slowly drains energy Red tile: Cannot be passed over, and attempting to results in energy loss Blue tile: Not a tile type per-se, but these show up over existing tiles when you have the sunglasses powerup. Indicates a tile that can be broken with the hammer to reveal a powerup. However, while a tile is flashing blue, it still has the inherent properties of its normal colour. Your score is displayed as money. Getting a money pickup or killing an enemy will net you cash. You health is displayed as Energy (E). You take damage by being hit or ran into by an enemy, or hovering over yellow or red tiles. There are also several minigames in Captain Ed. When you collect a warp drive in a stage, you are randomly warped to one of them. These are not necessary to complete the stages, except for the feudal stage (twice). In each stage there are also two structures: a shop and a gas station: (Press B to enter them) Shop: Functions like you would expect a shop to. Equippable items and key items are sold here. Gas Station: Replenishes your energy. Hold A at the second dialogue screen to exchange 10 dollars for one unit of gas. SAVING: Saving is done through a password feature. The second time you warp to the feudal era in a stage, you'll be given a dialogue choice. Press A and in the box on the right side of the screen, you'll see four rows of characters. Write this down; it's your password. To continue a game, select Continue from the main menu. ------- PICKUPS (ED03) ------- These items can be found inside the breakable tiles in the stages. Music box: Changes the BGM. Coin: Gives you 100 dollars. E Trophy: Restores a small amount of life. Super Drive: Doubles your ship's speed. Shield Booster: Makes you invulnerable. Warp Drive: Blasts you off to a bonus stage/boss fight. Sunglasses/Happy Face: This powerup is special as it actually falls from the sky instead of being in a tile. This powerup shows which tiles are breakable by making them flash blue. ----- ITEMS (ED04) ----- Items are purchased from the shops scattered around the stages. EQUIPPABLE: Double Laser: doubles your firepower, 100 shots Missiles: Extra firepower, single shot, 20 shots Hammer: Reduces amount of hits a tile needs to break Circular pendant: Function presently unknown Red Sweet Potato: Fire at an enemy for extra money bonus, 1 shot Red Sandals: Fire at an enemy. Toothed Necklace: Key item Wooden Flute: Key item Scythe: Key item Sword: Key item Wooden Stick: Key item Poleaxe: Key item Turntable: Key item ----------- WALKTHROUGH (ED05) ----------- All the stages in Captain Ed are pretty similar. In each stage, you have three objectives: 1. Kill enemies 2. Collect money 3. Buy the key item from the store (Always in the upper left) 4. You'll also receive a ship upgrade. Stage 8: This stage is simply the final boss fight. Refer to the bosses section for more information --------- MINIGAMES (ED06) --------- HIGH OR LOW: This is a classic, simple casino game that pretty much everyone should know how to play. One card on top is revealed and you gave to guess whether or not your card is going to be higher or lower than the visible card. After making your choice, you place your bet in 50 dollar increments up to 250 dollars. If you win, you receive that amount. If you lose, it's deducted from your cash total. You get to play a total of four times, with a potential winnings total of 1000 dollars. RHYTHM ACTION: This is a short rhythm minigame in which you use the buttons on the controller to "play" the drums. The computer will play through a short song and the proper drum rhythm sequence will flash on the right side of the screen. When the computer is done, it will be your turn to play. Your performance will be evaluated at the end and you will recieve a cash bonus based on how well you did. HIKING: In this minigame, you appear in the bottom right cornet of a 4x3 grid. Use the D-pad to move your character around the grid. At each point, you'll either get a point that flashes blue and awards 100 dollars, or one that flashes red and deducts 100 dollars. Simply walk around for the full minute and you'll walk out a thousand or so dollars richer. CHOOSE YOUR DESTINY: This minigame is simple. Open one of the doors and you'll either gain or lose cash based on a scene. You'll get to open two doors. FEUDAL JAPAN: Generates your save code. You need to visit at least twice to get this, and it's required to fight the level's boss. ------ BOSSES (ED07) ------ GREEN HORROR: This is the first boss you will encounter. He looks like a triangular green mass of junk. He'll flit around the screen in a circular pattern and shoot small green balls at you that do 5 damage each.. Simply dodge his shots and shoot back at him in the face. Missiles or double lasers will help here. After defeating him, he'll drop a key you can use to release one of your friends. FORCE SKELETON: This is the second boss. He looks like a really funky skull with 8 spheres surrounding him. His spheres block every attack you can throw at him. except for the stone. Use that for a quick hit on him. Time your attacks to go in between his shield and hit him smack in the face. He'll go down after a while. You'll receive permanent double laser after this boss. ROCK TITAN: This rocker has gone off the deep end. A whole 10 times larger than your ship, the rocker is out to get you. He looks like a goth with his head in between some stage monitors wielding a sick red guitar. He'll move up and down the stage and try to hit you. Simply shoot him in the head until he dies. AVENGED SEVENFOLD: The fourth boss is a skull with some crazy hair and wings coming out of his ears. He shoots minions at you. Simply fire at the middle of his head until he dies, shooting the little ones along the way. After this boss, you'll have the opportunity to offload your current key items onto a merchant ship. Go ahead and do so. CORPRUSARIAM: This fifth boss is a giant pile of skulls. He fires blue projectiles straight down at you, and shoots red balls out of his side that home in on you. The balls can be destroyed, but the blue lasers cannot. Fire your expendable items at him and then finish him off with your lasers/missiles. There's a short cutscene after this boss, and you receive an item that I believe gives you a discount in the store. ICON OF SIN: I hope you brought your consumables, because this boss is a pain in the ass. He's a giant blue horned head with dragons coming out of his moustache. It's easy to avoid is attacks because he needs to hit you to damage you and he moves pretty slow. However, it's pretty damn hard to hit him. What you need to do is move up into the corner so that his snakes are drawn upwards, and then quickly circle around him and shoot him in the head. Use your consumables as well since they can go through his snakes. After a while, he'll go down. MAIDEN OF DESPAIR: The seventh boss is the top third of a green haired woman. She'll throw balls that will bounce at 90 degree angles. Just keep dodging the balls and shoot her in the middle of her chest until she dies. DOGUMA: The last boss of the game is fought above a bright blue planet. Dogma is a man sitting in an elaborate silver-blue throne. He flits around the screen and fires two projectiles at you: fast moving blue balls, and slower moving blue pixels. They're not too hard to dodge as long as you keep moving. He takes quite a few hits before succumbing. CPU CORE: Not a boss in the typical sense at all. This is simply a 4-piece logic puzzle. Either follow the clues or brute force this one. For those who don't really care, the answer is smiley, rice cooker, bag, fish, from top left to bottom right. LUNATIC FRINGE: Wait, what? Another boss! Yes, the true final boss, Lunatic Fringe, is here to make you his slave. This boss you fight one on one, mano a mano. Use A to jump and B to shoot. LF will shoot spike balls at you and try to hit you with his external shield. Dodge his attacks by timing your shots and jumps so that you duck right under his spinning shield when he flies up. It's pretty hard. Just shoot him in the head. Be careful, if you die, there's no continuing! Once you defeat the boss, the ending cutscene plays and Ed is reunited with his lover. However, we see Fringe's coat in the background, with a promise that he will return! Congratulations on finishing the game! ------- FRIENDS (ED08) ------- The object of the game is to release all of your friends from captivity. They can be saved in any order. After you save a friend, you'll be thanked and then warped to the next "level" with a new item in your ship. The cells are located in a 3x2 grid. The positions of your friends' cells move around whenever you get to this screen, so there's no way to know who you're going to rescue. 1: Wooden Lute: Releases a traditional dancer. 2: Closed bag: Releases a fat cook. 3: Sunglasses: Releases a hip priest. 4: Staff: Releases a nerdy looking man in a robe. 5: Katana: Releases a gaijin samurai. 6: Red Fish: Releases a fisherman. ------------- LEGAL/CONTACT (ED09) ------------- This guide is copyright 2009 by DagothUrReturns.
