Jikuu Yuuden - Debias Released by Namco - November 27, 1987 Walkthrough by GForce This file is Copyright Garrett Swiatek ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Introduction ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This game is somewhat similar to many other action/adventure RPGs. It has side scrolling, talking with townsfolk and collecting weapons similar to Zelda 2. However, it has dark dungeons and monsters along with the day and night cycle similar to Castlevania 2. You control the hero but you have access to a spiritual guide named Aaron. You can contact him using you Zodiac wheel for advice. Whenever you contact Aaron, it drains part of your spirit points so use it sparingly. I recommend using the translation patch that was created and released by Gil Galad and Steve Martin. The translated name is Debias: Legendary Space-Time Hero. It’s not difficult to find but use it with any basic patching tool and get started. This walkthrough is based on my game play with the patch and will be taking you from start to finish. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Getting Started ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ At the title screen you can choose to start a new game or continue a past game. The code to continue a past game consists of up to 32 characters so copy it down carefully. If you start a new game you get a message from Aaron, the guardian of peace. To speed up the text scroll in this game press and hold up. Press and hold down to slow the text scroll. Enter your hero's name up to 4 characters and press start to begin the game. Once you start the game play portion you see your hero in a sidescroller view. In the bottom left corner we have the following categories: Life - Hero's health points. Your Hero dies when this life bar is down to 0 Spirit - Use this to contact Aaron for advice Tech - Allows you to ask Aaron more questions depending on the amount Gold - Money to purchase weapons and tools The bottom right of the screen has a blue, horizontal menu. To access this menu press start and use the direction pad to navigate. Starting from the left side of the blue menu: Talk - Gather information from villagers and shop keepers Arms - Choose a weapon you have in your inventory Tool - Choose a tool or key you have in your inventory Aaron - Sub-screen with spinning wheel. Select a symbol and get advice from Aaron. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Controls ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The controls of this game are slightly different than most other games. In this game hit B to JUMP and hit A to ATTACK. There are 3 different kinds of attacks: A Button - HIGH Attack A Button and Right or Left - MIDDLE Attack A Button and Down - LOW Attack If you press DOWN and B you can jump higher than normal. Left & Right on the control pad moves you accordingly. Up & Down allow you to move up and down stairs START - Access the blue menu bar SELECT - Nothing This game does not start out easily. You will quickly notice that getting hit from an enemy causes your hero start flashing and kneel down. Use that to your advantage because you'll be invincible for a few seconds. If you're in mid jump and get hit you fall STRAIGHT down usually to certain death and a quick GAME OVER. Luckily you can instantly continue from the beginning of the stage where you last died. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Walkthrough ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -In the Kingdom- Start by talking to the townspeople to gather some information. You are told that the town is dangerous and has had some kidnappings recently. You are advised to meet the king and leave the town before it's too late. At the far end of the first screen is a large gate (Elbos Gate) that can only be opened by the king's command. Find a path leading up to a large castle and press up to move to a new part of the town. Continue walking right in the new area and the people keep telling you to meet the king. If you consult Aaron for advice he tells you that you are required to kill at least 1 enemy before you meet the king. If you haven’t killed anything yet, you will be unable to enter the inner castle walls. Enter the large doorway and continue right again. At the end you will be in the king's chamber. He asks for your help and the princess gives you 200 gold to start your quest. Return back to the town and the gate has now been opened by the king but don't leave yet. Check out the town and buy some things and get a password before you go. Starting from the left side of town the shops are: Password Weapons - swords, bombs, and shuriken Pawn Shop to sell off your items Tools - food, crystal, potions, and armor Restaurant - restore health and spirit You can stick around town and let the night cycle bring enemies to defeat so you can stock up on cash to buy weapons and supplies. I'll let you decide what to buy and bring, I'll just try to help you through the game itself. Go to the edge of the city and pass through Elbos Gate -Outside the Gate- As you walk to the right you encounter your first real enemy and he's pretty tough. It’s a black panther that jumps around quickly. Our hero is pretty slow and doesn’t turn around too quickly so be careful. Upon defeating the black panther you should gain your first 2 Tech points and a key appears. Be sure to collect the key quickly because it vanishes in a few seconds. Enter the door at the end of the screen. -Bats & Platforms- Your hero has to jump across the platforms here and defeat the bats swooping in from all directions. Move along slowly and don't forget to press down before you jump to reach higher platforms. Be careful near the edges of the platforms too. It may look like you aren't quite at the edge but the game has dull sprite recognition and you can fall and die when you least suspect it. Get to the end of the cave and pass through the doorway. -Doorways- Please become familiar with this room because I will refer to it often as the 'Room of Doors'. Eachdoor leads to a different path and adventure. Don't forget that you can use Aaron to warp back to town to buy weapons or heal up. You can pass through Elbos Gate, cross through the Bats & Platforms room again and return here to take the next path. Remember, our mission is to rescue the townspeople, collect the Crystal Sword, and defeat Gorgon. I will refer to each door as the following: Icon Door 6 Door 4 Door Enter 4 Door to continue our quest. -Bats & Stairs- Bad news, there are more annoying bats here again. They can knock you off the stairs so take your time and kill them off first. Get up the stairs and into the red door. The person asks if you’re out to kill Gorgon. If you answer YES he gives you a free bomb. If you answer NO he calls you a coward and kicks you out of his shop. Continue to the end of this room, kill more bats, and enter the door at the end. -Samurais or Vikings- Fast moving samurai are waiting for you as soon as you step into the room. The red door room up the stairs tells you to rescue some people and return to him again later. Head down the stairs and hop onto the platform to take you over the water. Beware of water jets shooting up to knock you off the platform. Go up the stairs, over the walkway, and down the stairs at the other end. Backtrack and get onto another platform and ride to the red door under the upper walkway. This requires a key so select one from your TOOL menu and open the door. Inside are 3 different prisoners waiting to be rescued. Talk to any one of them and they respond that they are the people that worship the crystal. After that they all disappear simultaneously so leave the room. If you dare you can return left and speak to the guy who demanded you save the towns folk. It’s up to you whether or not you want to go back and talk to him. If you do, it will help you read and understand clues throughout the game. If you choose not to go back, the next step is to continue right and enter the door at the end. -High Road or Low Road- You can choose to go up the stairs and battle 2 big enemies on level ground or stay below for jumping over platforms and battling bats. Enter the red door and you see a large, strange sign above you. We are unable to make out what it says. If you spoke to the guy in the previous room after rescuing the people, he would grant you the power to be able to read their language. If you did in fact speak to him you should select the TALK command and we are told this message: "We worshipped the huge crystal as our God. We were invincible. One can seal that power with a certain sword, however." Exit this room, continue to the right, and enter the final cave door. -Cursed Statue- If you have the language power you'll see another large sign in this room. If you don't have that power, no sign will appear. No matter what, you should see 2 red doors and a large statue. Talk to the statue and enter the left door. -Kill the Guard- Next room looks like it has 2 red doors again and 2 enemies. However, only kill the shorter, darker enemy and talk to the taller, lighter character. Enter the right door when you’re ready. -Poison Trap- Walk left and up the stairs into the red door room. You are offered some medicine but say NO because it is actually poisoned. You are rewarded for passing his test and he expands your health bar once you leave his room. Walk left, drop down, and enter the cave door. -Door #2- You start on a platform with a bat swarming around you. The platform next to you can only be reached by a boosted jump. It’s not a very important room, just some advice. Drop down and pass the first cave door, but enter the one just after it. -Many Options- Another cursed statue waits for you and his comments vary depending on whether or not you have the language ability. Ignore the numbered doors and use the last red one. -Across then Back- Fight your way across the upper walkways, down the stairs, and back left to enter the cave door. -Crossroads- If you walk right and enter the door you encounter a final boss. He mocks you for not having the right weapon to defeat him and starts attacking you. Instead, walk left and enter the cave door at the very end. -3 Steps- At the very end of this room is a locked door that requires a key. Instead take about 3 steps to the right and enter the very close cave door. -Long Haul- This is a longer room than the last so prepare to battle some enemies from the ceiling and some hard hitting swordsmen. The red door up the stairs doesn’t contain anything unless you have the language ability so just make you way to the end and enter the cave door. -Mysterious Pool- The only thing in this room is a deep body of water. If you fall to the bottom of the water and push up, you will be warped back to a final boss' room. Again, he will mock you for not having the needed weapon to inflict any damage. -Back to Base- Now that we have a better understanding of the game, let's use Aaron to warp back to the kingdom. Stock up on any supplies, upgrade your weapon, get a password, or whatever you need. When you’re ready, exit through the Elbos Gate again, collect the key from the black panther, cross the platforms with bats, and go to the 'Room of Doors'. This time enter 6 Door. Note - If your game has a problem and you are unable to fight the black panther for a key again, please refer to the section below titled "CHEATS" for assistance. -A New Path- Fight across more dangerous platform and pass by the open cave door. Go down the stairs and edge yourway across the screen slowly because a wizard will suddenly appear very close to you. Defeat him and backtrack up the stairs and into the cave door. -Straight Shot- Nothing fancy or mysterious about this room. Fight from left to right across the platforms and be careful of getting hit in mid-air. Exit the door at the end. -Similar But Not The Same- You come out in a very familiar looking area on top of a platform. Go down the stairs and fight a very quick and elusive spider with your crouching attack. There is another surprise wizard here and he leaves another key when he dies so grab it quickly. Enter the cave door that looks like it leads into a mountain. -Elevators & Lava- There is a lot going on in this new room. You are attacked by blue creatures jumping out of the lava and shoot fireballs. There are bats trying to knock you into the lava pits, there are rising and falling elevators, and danger all around. Get to the far left door and enter there. -Chaos All Around- Here is another basic layout that you need to fight from start to finish but it's not that easy. There are enemies coming from all directions, lava pits, platforms, a surprised wizard and bombs dropping from the ceiling. Take your time and get to the right side door to continue. -Up and Over- Head right to the stairs and go up and over to the left. You have to fight and jump across as usual. There's no strategy or advice I can give. Just do your best and enter the left side door. -Spiders & Wizards- Go left and up the stairs to fight the first wizard. Continue jumping and get across the platforms. On the highestmiddle platform is another wizard. Don’t forget to collect the key once it’s dead. Beware the spider waiting at the bottom of the stairs. Instead of walking down the stairs, jump off the platform and fall through the stairs and kill the spider. Boost jump up to the next platform and continue to the highest platform to face another wizard. Head down the stairs, avoid the spider and go to the cave door in the middle of the room. -Reflexes- This room can be pretty stressful. You have many different platforms to navigate along with swooping bats and blue creepers dropping from the ceiling. If you have the projectile shuriken weapon maybe you'd like to use it now for long distance kills. Make your way across the various platforms and enter the far left door. -Arachnophobia- This tough room has 7 spiders to defeat. Always use your crouching attack and avoid them from knocking you around. In the middle of the room is a grey brick segment, a surprise wizard appears there so be ready. Walk all the way left and enter the door at the end. -Captives- We enter a room full of 3 numbered doors and one red door that requires a key. Enter the red door, speak to the prisoners to free them and exit. -Back to Base- Consult Aaron to gather some new info. Based on how much Tech you've earned, you can ask him various questions. His answers are usually mysterious and cryptic but pay attention to some of the symbols on the Zodiac wheel. They are the same as the symbols in the 'Room of Doors'. Return to the kingdom to heal, get a password, stock up on supplies, and upgrade your weapon to whatever you can afford. Exit the Elbos Gate, continue the familiar path and get to the 'Room of Doors'. At this time you should enter 4 Door and visit the red door room to gain the power of understanding the language. You only need to travel through two rooms to find that person who grants you the power. From now on we can read the signs and learn more. Use Aaron to warp back to the kingdom, do whatever you need to and return once again to the 'Room of Doors' This time enter Icon Door. -3 of the Same- Nothing special here, just battle across the room and defeat 3 hard hitting enemies and enter the far door on the lower level. -Booby Trap- This room has 2 pink doors and a floating blue head. Speak to the head now that you have the language power. Be careful of the right side door, there is a proximity mine next to it. Jump next to the door or edge next to it slowly and it will detonate. After it explodes, enter the right side door. -Light Orb- This room looks very similar to the last but instead of a floating blue head there is a blue chest in the bottom left corner. Use the TALK command on the blue chest and it gives you the choice to take what is inside. TAKE IT and you get the Light Orb. Stand in front of the right door and what's next is something I can't explain. If you enter the door you will randomly appear in either of 2 different rooms. I recommend using a save state if you want to follow this walkthrough exactly. One room option is with a floating blue head and 2 floating 2 blue chests. If you get this room, reload your save state and keep entering the door till you see a purple knight. -Purple Knight- You can either fight the purple knight or not but enter the left door when you’re ready. -Fire Wisps- Drop down as soon as possible and avoid the fire wisps. They hit hard and take lots of your energy and can't be killed. Enter the left door to continue. -Boiling Lava- Walk past the nearby door, head up the stairs and over the boiling lava. Enter the door at the end. -Wizard Mouse- Talking to this wizard mouse does nothing so just enter the red door (with a key) all the way to the right. -Fuga Fuga- This room has 2 pink doors, an empty floating chest, and a cursed statue. Even if you have the language power he doesn’t make sense. He only says "Fuga Fuga" so ignore him for now and enter the right door. -Unavoidable- Here are more fire wisps but it’s not so easy this time. You have to enter the right door and will probably take some heavy damage. Drop down and crouch and wait for them to make their move. Boost jump over them and enter the right door. -New View- We are introduced to a totally different game view now. It’s a behind the back 3rd person view or your hero in a dark tunnel. Press down 18 times to exit out the other side to a new area. -Blue Knights- You enter the room in a very dangerous position with a blue knight right on top of you. Kill it and move right, kill another knight, and enter the closest door. -Free Crystals- If you speak to the floating head you can win free crystals, lose crystals, or get medicine. Enter the right door next but make a save state if you want/can. The next room is random and may throw you off course of this walkthrough. You want to encounter a green goblin in the next room so do whatever it takes to encounter one. -Green Goblin- You can talk to the goblin and he warns you of another door bomb. Kill him, trigger the bomb safely, and use a key to open the right side door. -More Captives- Speak to the captives to make the vanish to freedom and leave the room. Enter the left pink door now. Save often to make sure you follow along the walkthrough despite the random rooms. -Back to the Right Path- I'm going to summarize the next few parts to move things along faster Purple Knight - right door Blue Knight - up the stair and use key on shop door. He asks for an item for information. Save yourself the trouble, he says "Golgon's door only opens with the skull key" Blue Knight - drop down and walk right and enter the lower door beneath 2 upper doors Empty Room - enter right door New Room - Walk right briefly and enter a shop (no key) You are offered water by a slave. Here is another trap but you need to endure the trouble. Its poison and it may kill you. If your survive you will be rewarded with magic water that will remove the skull's curse. Exit the shop and walk all the way left and down the stairs. Enter the door at the bottom of the stairs. Twin Heads - Speak to both the heads and enter the pink door Evil Eyes - Drop down and enter the right hand door with a key. The Evil Eyes drop keys if you kill them. Green Dog - It’s not an enemy so don’t attack it. Talk to it and it gives you a protection crystal. Leave the room, pass the evil eyes again, and enter the left door. Tough Jump - Jump over the pit and beware of the enemy. Enter the closest door and you're in a tunnel again. Press up till you come out the other side. Walk far left and enter the door to another tunnel. Press up 13 times and exit out the right side doorway. You're in a room with fire wisps so drop down and enter the left door. Boiling Lava - You're back in a room you may recognize. Jump over the pits of lava and enter the door near the blue knight. Sweet Water - Talk to the green character and he gives you Sweetened Water to heal you. Cursed Statue - Drop down and enter the left door. Skull Key - Talk to the floating head and he warns about a poison trap. Agree to TAKE the item and choose the right chest. You are rewarded with the Skull Key. Use Aaron to return to the kingdom, restock your items, and go to the 'Room of Doors'. -Familiar Territory- We are entering Door 4 again to make sure that you have definitely gotten the power of language now and continue on. I won't go into detail about strategies about parts we already covered so keep going as far as you can in each room and entering the cave entrances at the end until you read a cursed statue. Jump up and read the sign then talk to the statue for important information. Enter the door on the right when you’re done. -Boost Jumping- This room can be frustrating with the jumping. It looks simple but the quick enemy and the over sensitive controls can make it annoying. Cross the water pools with boost jumping and enter the nearest cave door. Inside you see 4 doors and a cryptic sign. Read the sign and walk past the red door to make a mouse wizard appear. Speak to it for some information and leave through the red door. Backtrack across the pools of water and leave through the same cave door that you entered through. You're back to the room with the cursed statue but this time enter the left door. You may see a character you have already spoken to so just ignore him and enter the left door to a new area. -Wisp Walker- You may remember how hard it was dealing with the fire wisps before but don’t worry here. These only move up and down in a simple patter so time you movements carefully. Ignore the cave door in the middle of the long room and enter the red door all the way at the end. Inside is a bat and a strange green shape on the floor. Approach the green shape and it explodes into a wizard. Speak to the wizard then leave. You may want to let yourself die back in the fire wisp room so you can come back to life at the beginning of it again and avoid all the trouble. No matter what you decide, go back to the start of this long room and enter the door to return to the room with 2 red doors and the strange creature. This time enter the right door. Take a few steps left and enter the nearby cave door. You will now see 2 blue zombies and some bats. Take a few steps right and enter the nearby cave door. Drop down, talk to the cursed statue, and enter the red door on the end. -Quest For Captives- You return to a familiar place so I'll speed up a little. You can choose the higher or lower path each with various dangers, enter the cave door at the end of the room to the right, under the stairs. Walk left and fight 2 pink enemies and enter the far, left cave door. Walk right and fight 2 red enemies, cross the water on a moving platform and open the red door with a key. Free the captives, leave the room and head back to the double cave doors and take the left one to backtrack. Boost jump to the middle platform and avoid the pink enemies and take the cave door in the middle of the room. Up the stairs and to the left over the elevated flooring. Drop down and enter the lower cave door on the bottom left. You’re in a room with a Wizard Mouse but just enter any of the gray doors to return back to an earlier part of the game. -Familiar Places- The hero is now back to a very familiar place so I'll speed up the next segment. Walk through the next 3 long rooms and enter each cave door at the far right ends of the rooms. In the cursed statue room take the left door. In the strange creature room take the left door. You’re back in the room with the fire wisps but don’t go to the far right end. Halfway through the room you should enter the cave door to enter a new path. -A New Path- Walk left and defeat a massive, green caterpillar. Enter the red door room and talk to the floating orbs. Exit the room and beware of the green caterpillar again. Leave through the same cave door, walk left past the fire wisps and exit the far left door. Walk past the friendly creature and enter the right red door. Go all the way left and skip the red door up the stairs. Enter the far left cave door. Fight past the several blue monsters all the way to the far right and enter the last door at the end. You may remember this room with the huge orange hands ready to pound you. Fight past them quickly and enter the red door room. No key is needed. Inside the small room you have to fight a knight. When he is defeated he turns into a messenger. He tells you to meet him in the depths of the temple where he will give you the Crystal Sword. -Final Captives- Exit the room and make your way back through the orange hands and blue monsters to the double cave doors. Take the right hand door and enter a cursed statue room with 3 white doors and 1 red door. You come out on an elevated platform above a blue monster. Cross the room to the right and enter the door under the stairs. Fight the pink enemies and enter the left door. Walk right, cross the lava on the moving platform, use a key to open the red door. Talk to the captives and leave. Return to the double cave doors and enter the right side door. Walk right across the room and fight the very fast Gold Knights. Ascend the stairs and enter the red door room. Talk to the familiar figure, select the Light Orb from your TOOL menu and press down. You set down the Light Orb and the Crystal Sword appears in its place. Talk to the figure one more time and exit the room. -First Boss Battle- Jump off to the right quickly to avoid the Gold Knight. Enter the cave door just to your right. This room used to have a water pit but it’s dried up now. Equip the Crystal Sword and enter the sunken door to face off against the first boss. Stay on your elevated platform, just creep to the very edge and start swinging your sword. The floating head will eventually cross into your path. Use a turbo setting if possible. Eventually the head will retreat into its chamber so it’s time to become more aggressive. Jump up and strike the vertical chamber and the room will become orange. A few more hits and the first boss is dead. You will see a short cut scene that depicts that the first boss is dead and you get a message from Aaron. He will raise one of your levels based on what you select from the Zodiac Wheel. Make your choice and you will reappear back at the 'Room of Doors'. 4 Door is now sealed up so we know that path is complete. Consult Aaron and warp back to the kingdom. Sell off any crystals or chests and spend all you money on newly available armor. There is a full body suit for 980 and it is the best investment. Be sure to stock up on anything else and get a recent password if you need one. Return to the 'Room of Doors' and enter 6 Door. -Depths of Hell- Let's make our way to the second boss but we have to return to a tough area of the game. You may be very familiar with the game mechanics and my writing style by now so I'll speed things up again. Jump across the platforms and enter the door halfway through the room before going downstairs. All the way right across the platforms in the room with the low ceiling. Down the stairs, into the door leading into the mountain. All the way left across the room with many platforms and lava. Up the stairs and the door at the end of the room. Blue creatures from the ceiling, bats, falling bombs, small platforms, and lava obstacles for you. Far door to the right end of the room. Up the stairs on the right then cross the room to the left and enter the door. Pass all the way through the room with the spiders and wizards. Don't enter the door halfway through, go all the way to the far left. Jump across all the brick platforms in the room with the low, orange ceiling. Enter the far door on the right end. Pass by all the spiders and use the boost jump. Enter the elevated doorway on the small platform. In the room with 3 white doors and 1 red door it’s time to try something new. Consult Aaron and make sure you have enough TECH to access all of his options. Select the CHOOSE DOOR option then enter Door 3. You should appear in a brand new area underneath a platform with a red enemy above you. Go up the stairs and across the room and enter the door at the end. Next are some really tough jumps over some shooting lava and narrow platforms. When you get to the end, defeat the guardians and enter the double yellow door. -Second Boss Battle- This guy reminds me of Fry Guy from Super Mario Bros 2. He shoots out smaller fire balls that follow you and explode next to you. It’s possible for you to keep him moving in a tight pattern and keep hitting him if you have a turbo setting. Once he's dead you will see his statue crumble and Aaron will increase your life bar again. You will reappear at the 'Room of Doors' with 6 Door sealed. -Edge of Darkness- Enter Icon Door and get ready for the last leg of the game. I'm going to copy the above segment and paste it here because you will be repeating a large part of it to get to that third boss. -Light Orb- This room looks very similar to the last but instead of a floating blue head there is a blue chest in the bottomleft corner. Press up 2 times and exit into a side view room. Walk right, boost jump, and enter the room. -Third Boss Battle- There are a few things going on at once. The purple creature bounces around, spits bouncing enemies, and purple liquid drips from the skulls hanging from the ceiling. You may find a safe spot in the middle of the room while it bounces over you back and forth. Once it’s dead, you will see the final statue fall. -Final Showdown- You will immediately be warped back to the kingdom. Now all the townsfolk are out all night and enemies don’t appear once it gets dark. You can speak to the villager in green who advises you to visit the king who is waiting. SPOILER ALERT: Stock up on meat and medicine before you go, it’s not a social call. You can sell all your keys and old weapons because this is your last battle. Enter the king's chamber and he invites you closer. He suddenly transforms into a huge, black, flying demon. He jumps around the room but not too quickly. He shoots bubble like projectiles that fly in a straight line. Find a spot and keep stabbing and he'll make his way into your attacks. The best spot is on top of the stairs that lead to his throne. He can get stuck just jumping up and down and you can trap him in there till he dies. Once he is defeated a bat flies down from the ceiling but don’t worry. It is not an enemy, it’s the start of the ending sequence of the game. You have the option of 2 different endings depending how you answer a YES or NO question. Surprisingly, they are both good endings, just in different ways. You can use a save state to check what each one is but I don't want to spoil it for you. If you let the game run a few minutes longer during the ending scenes you will see the true endings so don’t rush. Whatever you choose, congratulations on beating the game! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Cheat Codes ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Here are some hex codes that may help you out along the way. Thanks also to GameFAQs.com, ROMHacking.net, and Nico Nico Video Copyright © Garrett Swiatek – January 12, 2012
