Introduction -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= J-League Super Top Players is a soccer game for the Famicom, utilizing the Datach Joint ROM System (the barcode reader accessory). The game itself is fun, with 10 teams to choose from, and multiple game modes including an actual tournament or penalty kick practicing. The only catch is that you need the team/player cards to scan into the system in order to play anything (or the barcode numbers if playing through other means). Regardless of how you do it, if you are into sports or soccer, this game is worth checking out. It is a bit on the short and simple side, but it is certainly enjoyable. ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 3. Controls -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Start: Start/pause game Control Pad: Move cursor on menu screens, move players during game A: Make selection on menu screens, long kick/slide (during game) B: Cancel selection on menu screens, kick/change character (during game) ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 4. Overview -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ========== Game Modes ========== At the title screen, after you press Start, there will be a list of options you can choose from. J.LEAGUE: Enter into the main J-League season/tournament mode. Play Match 1P vs COM (プレマッチ 1P VS COM): Play a single game against the computer. Play Match 1P vs 2P (プレマッチ 1P VS 2P): Play a single game against a human player. PK Battle Manual (PKたいせんMANUAL): Practice penalty kicks against a human player; you manually choose to kick. PK Battle Auto (PKたいせんAUTO): Practice penalty kicks against a human player; you automatically kick. Player List (せんしゅめいかん): Scan your cards/barcodes to view its data. For the PK Battle modes, each player must select a different team. You then must scan a player card (not a team card), and then that player will have a chance to kick a penalty kick (if it is your turn). If you are the goalie, you can move with Left/Right. If you are the kicker, press A to kick if in Manual mode. Each team gets five shots at the goal, alternating turns. For all other modes, you must scan a team card and that will be the team you play as for the game(s). ================ General Gameplay ================ The main mode of play is the J.LEAGUE mode, of course. It is set up in a season/tournament setting, with 18 games per team. There are 10 teams total in this version of J.League, and they are randomly sorted to play against a different team each day. The games are split into two periods with 3 minutes (3:00) apiece. Prior to starting a game, you can choose the formation of your 11 active players, from one of three layouts you can see on the small screen (4-4-2, 4-3-3, or 3-5-2). You can then substitute in the four players on the bench if you want (you can not substitute the goal keeper, who is the #1 position and GK next to his name). When you are ready to play, select Exit and the coin toss will commence. The team who wins the coin toss decides what goal they start at, and the opposing team starts with the ball. During the actual game, your team's available actions will depend on if you are on the offense (possessing the ball currently) or defense (other team has the ball). Those controls are as follows: Offense: A - Long kick (hold Control Pad in a direction after kicking to adjust the ball's trajectory) B - Short/low kick (good for short passes or shots on the goal) Defense: A - Slide (this is how you steal the ball from an opponent) B - Switch currently controlled player Generally, the game will give you control of the player closest to the ball. If you are on the defense, you can press B to switch control manually. This is helpful when trying to strategize against your opponent. If the ball goes out of bounds during play, by bouncing off the goal posts or being kicked out accidentally, possession of the ball goes to the opposing team. Basically, if your team was the last to touch the ball as it went out of bounds, the other team will get the ball. To return the ball to play, it will be kicked/thrown in, either from the sides, the corner, or from the center line, depending on where and how the ball went out of bounds. If you are on the defense and the opposition is approaching your goal, you will automatically gain control of the goal keeper (GK). If you catch the ball, you can throw/kick it away, much like a long kick when on the offense. When a goal is made, play resumes at the center line with the opposing team starting with the ball again. A HUGE aspect of gameplay is sliding. It is essential to making any sort of progress in soccer, since this is how you attempt to steal the ball from the opposing players. Typically, it is best to do so diagonally, but if you line up with the ball and slide, you can steal it that way as well. If the ball is not under possession by any player, you can simply run up and take it by touching it. Be careful when sliding however, since you can actually receive a penalty card (yellow or red) for infractions such as stealing the ball improperly, etc. If you get a red card, that player is out of the game. You can also take a penalty kick, with only the opposing goal keeper attempting to block, if an infraction occurs in the penalty area (boxed area in front of the goal). It is also possible to kick the ball into your own team's goal; your opponent WILL receive a point when this happens, so pay attention! If you are not seeing opponents trying to actively block you, you're going the wrong way! After a game (in J.League mode), you will get to see how other teams did on the current day. You will then go to a screen where the teams are ranked by performance. Ranking is based on the goals scored by or against your team, so your rank is (Goals Made - Goals Allowed Against). After that, you will go to the next day's games, and play your team's next game. After all 18 days worth of games are complete, the teams will be ranked like before. The top-ranked team will go on to the second stage, where another 18 days of games will be played. Following that, there will be 3 Championship games, and if you win, you have won the J.League and the credits will roll! ========= Team List ========= There are a total of 10 teams in this game. There is no real advantage or disadvantage to picking one over the other; it does come down to what card or barcode you scan in. If you are playing this game by other means, you will need the barcode numbers in order to input the teams to play as. Those can be found in a table at this URL: http://www25.atwiki.jp/famicomall/pages/909.html Gamba Osaka (ガンバ大阪) JEF United Ichihara (ジェフ市原) Kashima Antlers (鹿島アントラーズ) Nagoya Grampus (名古屋グランパス) San Frecce Hiroshima () Shimizu S-Pulse (清水エスパルス) Urawa Red Diamonds (浦和レッズ) Verdy Kawasaki (ベルディ川崎) Yokohama Fl?els (横浜フリューゲルス) Yokohama Marinos (横浜マリノス) There is also one player card/barcode number available (お茶漬け), found on the same page as the other barcode values. If you have additional player card values, feel free to let me know and I may make another section for them! ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 5.
