I dedicate this guide to my four brothers, Ian, Chad, Kip, and Pete. Until I can think of a good reason why, just think of them as old school... ;) If you have anything to add, be it strategies, tips, tricks, e-mail me at kader3@msn.com. I will credit you with the info in the next update. INTRO AND NOTES ------------------- Super Mario Bros. 3 was a game released on the NES some time around 1990. As the best selling NES title ever, it has definitely earned it's place as one of the top games of all time, with the greats like it's predecessor, Super Mario Bros., and the Legend of Zelda. Super Mario Bros. 3 is one of my favorite games of all time, and you should enjoy it too. Why did I write this guide? Simply because I'm a die-hard old school game fan and there are already too many FAQ/Walkthroughs for the game, but I noticed a lack of a Boss FAQ, so I decided to write one. - Strategies on how to defeat all 8 Koopas, how they act, and different attributes of each Koopa. - Strategies and different things for the Mini-Bosses, such as Hammer Bros. and the infamous Boom Boom. As this is a Boss FAQ, don't expect too much else, but enjoy it none-the-less. ******************************************************************************* II. VERSION HISTORY -------------------- v. 1.0 - March 22, 2003 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Started work on FAQ and will probably have it finished on this same date. Hopefully I will submit it and have it posted on this date. As that's the only version available, check back for updates and whatnot later on. If you have anything to add to this guide, please e-mail me at kader3@msn.com. If I like the information and find it worthy of this guide, I'll post it here and credit you in the next update. Chances are I will add your stuff, by the way. ;) v. 1.1 - March 26, 2003 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ LitaLover45@aol.com e-mailed me with the remaining names of the Koopa Kids' origins. Thanks go out to LitaLover, and I appreciate it. v. 1.2 - March 27, 2003 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This version...this one I'm don't even like to think about. The guide was re-released yesterday, on March 26, apparently before on March 26, 1003 (fixed that, of course). Also, due to the fact that the guide was updated late that night, I forgot to actually INPUT THE NAMES! I don't know what I was thinking, the whole point of the update was the addition of the Koopa Kid's name's origins. Anyways, I didn't forget this time, so enjoy. v 1.3 - March 29, 2003 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Whew! There sure have been a lot of updates recently. I got an e-mail from misheymd@muohio.edu and he told me a trick concerning Bowser. I decided the info was good, so I added it to the the Bosses section. Thanks for the great strat, mishey! ******************************************************************************* III. BOSSES ------------ There are 8 main bosses in the game, the Koopa kids and Bowser himself. In addition to these I will also discuss the other Mini-Bosses that you will encounter in the game. Although some people may not consider them bosses, they'll be here anyway. A. LARRY KOOPA =============== World 1 - Grass Land Shell Color - Green Special Abilities - N/A Larry Koopa is the guadian of the airship in the first world, Grass Land. As such, he is by far the easiest boss in the game. His room is set up like so: | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | _____ | | | |_____| | |_______________| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Larry Koopa's only special power, and all of the Koopa kids have this, is the wand that he has. He can shoot rings out of it at you, three at a time, but they're neither threatening nor dangerous. 1. The most widely used way is to jump on his head three times. Each time you do, he will retreat to the inside of his shell, spin around a couple of times, then jump up and try to land on you, but that can be very easily avoided. This is the most general strategy to use on all of the Koopa kids. 2. If you have a Fire flower when you arrive, as there is one on the ship and it is easily obtained, 10 fireballs will do him in. This is a bit harder than the previous method, but if you want a bit of a challenge, that's the way to go. For even more of a challenge, try not loosing your fire power! B. MORTON KOOPA JR. ==================== World 2 - Desert Land Shell Color - Gray Special Abilities - N/A Morton Koopa Jr., much like Larry, only has the wand and it's power. But, his terrain is a bit more elevated and rough than Larry's. Besides that, he's not really difficult. He's bigger, but that doesn't mean better, at least not in this case. His room: | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | _______| | | | _________ | | | | | |_____| | | |___| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | 1. You can, of course, use the jump-on-his-head-three-times strategy explained earlier. 2. If you have fire power when you arrive, you can use your fire power against him also. 10 fireballs will do him in, just like with Larry. This is a bit harder than the previous method, but if you want a bit of a challenge, that's the way to go. For even more of a challenge, try not loosing your fire power! C. WENDY O. KOOPA ================== World 3 - Water Land Shell Color - Red Special Abilities - Shoots ring/floatation-like devices that bounce off the walls and around the room during the whole battle. Wendy O. Koopa is the only girl in the clan. She differs from the first two in a few ways. Her room is the first to not have any elevated points, and she is the first with her own special ability. In addition to throwing the usual three rings from her wand, she also shoots a special ring that looks much like an innertube each time you hit her, and one right when the battle begins. These rings will bounce around the room and you must avoid them while you try to defeat her. 1. Jump on her head three times. You cannot, however, jump on top of the rings or anything, so don't try something stupid like that. 2. If you made it to her with fire power, 10 fireballs will destroy her also. One thing to note about this method is that she will only throw one of her rings, and this will be at the beginning of the fight. That's because she only throws a ring each time you JUMP on her, so if you find the rings too annoying, you may want to try and beat her this way. D. IGGY KOOPA ============== World 4 - Giant Land Shell Color - Blue Special Abilites - N/A Iggy is just like Larry, but with different looks and a different terrain in his room. As opposed to his big world, he is no different than the other Koopa kids in size. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |___ _____ | | | | | |___ _| | |_ | | | | | | | | | | |_________| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | 1. Jump on his head three times. 2. If you can make it to him with fire power, the regular 10 fireballs will beat him, but in his case, you should probably go with method #1 as that one is easier. That is, of course, you're looking for a challenge... E. ROY KOOPA ============= World 5 - Sky Land Shell Color - Pink Special Abilities - Can shake the ground and stun you. Roy resembles Morton Koopa Jr. in every way, except that Roy has a special power. Whenever you jump on him, he will jump in the air like everyone else, but not quite as high. Whenever he lands, he shakes the ground violently. If you are on the ground when he lands, you will be stunned long enough for him to possibly hit you, so be careful. His uneven terrain adds to his difficulty, and Roy will probably be the first boss you have trouble with. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | ___ _______ | | | |___| |___| | |_______| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | 1. Jump on his head three times. Be careful to watch out for his ground shaking crap, though. Between each hit he will jump up and when he lands, the ground will shake, and if your on it, it will stun you. Right before he lands, jump up to avoid being stunned. He will bounce twice when you hit him. Also, whenever he jumps normally, even when you did not hit him, it will shake the ground. 2. He you somehow manage to make it to his lair with fire power, deliver 10 fireballs and he'll be down for the count. This method is much harder than the first one, so do it at your own risk. F. LEMMY KOOPA =============== World 6 - Ice Land Shell Color - Special Abilities - Shoots out green bouncy balls that fly around the room during the battle. Three of them total. Lemmy is a lot like Wendy in that he fires projectiles that fly around the room. In place of rings, though, he shoots balls that fly around the room. Unlike Wendy's rings, you can jump on the balls without receiving any damage, but you can never destroy them. He rolls around on one of these balls also. As with Wendy O. Koopa, the only other Koopa kid with seperate projectiles other than the septor rings, the terrain in his room is flat. 1. Jump on his head three times. Every hit or so, as it is not always after he is hit, he will throw one of his plastic balls out. They look like a children's toy, the kind of balls that young kids throw around. They are green with a yellow star on them. He will be rolling around on a ball during the course of the fight. 2. The 10 fireball norm will do him in too, but it is not recommened here. G. LUDWIG VON KOOPA ==================== World 7 - Pipe Land Shell Color - Blue-green Special Abilites - Can shake the ground and stun you. Ludwig Von Koopa is almost identical to Roy Koopa. Whenever you jump on him, he will jump in the air like everyone else, but not quite as high. Whenever he lands, he shakes the ground violently. If you are on the ground when he lands, you will be stunned long enough for him to possibly hit you, so be careful. His uneven terrain adds to his difficulty, and Ludwig is the last of the Koopa kids that you have to deal with. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | _____ _____ | | | | | | | |_____| | | |___| | | |_____| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | 1. Jump on his head three times (gasp). His fighting strategy is identical to that of Roy Koopa, so refer to his section if you need to. 2. If you should somehow succeed in making to him with fire power, as their is a Fire Flower on the ship, the usual 10 fireballs will kill him. Definitely not recommended for this guy. H. BOWSER - KING OF THE KOOPAS =============================== Bowser, as in most games that preceded this one and many that followed it, is the last boss you encounter in the entire game. IMO, he is by far the most difficult, and the way you usually have to beat him differs from any other enemy in the game. I guess he deserves the place as the hardest boss to defeat, seeing as though he is THE Boswer and all. Mario and Bowser have many, many run-ins and are one of video game's most well known arch rivals. The King of the Koopas is not an easy foe, but with the following strategies provided, you should be able to take him down without too much trouble. _ _ |_|_| | | _ _ _|_D_| |_|_|_____________________|_|_|_| |_|_|/////////////////////|_|_|_| |_|_|_|_|///////////////|_|_|_|_| |_|_|_|_|_|_|///////|_|_|_|_|_|_| _________ KEY | /- Bricks| D- Door | _________| 1. When the match starts, Bowser will drop down from who knows where. He will spit fireballs at you. After two or three, he will jump up in the air, position over you, and try and fall down on top of you. Each time he falls on part of the bricks, he destroys them. What you have to do is get him to jump over an area in the middle of the bricks, where if they are broken, you/he would fall through. Right when he gets over you, quickly move away, and he will crush a part of the floor there. Repeat this process several times until he makes a hole in the floor and falls through. Be careful not to get hit or fall through! *NOTE* Do not move prematurely out of his way when he jumps, because if you move to early, he will follow you elsewhere, and that's never a good thing. 2. If you make it to Bowser with fire power, you may use that against him, but to take him down it takes somewhere between 20-25 shots. 3. You can use the Hammer Bros. suit against him and with 10 hammers he'll be out like a light. Here is a trick sent in by misheymd@muohio.edu on how to stop Bowser from throwing fireballs. I'm putting here exactly what this person said, only making slight changes. It's possible to prevent Bowser from breathing fire during the final boss encounter, so long as you have a P-Wing, Super Leaf, or Tanooki Suit. When you reach Bowser's lair, get up a head of steam (or don't, if you have the P-Wing) and fly over the wall to the left. Run to the left until you nearly fall off the edge, then return to the right and drop down into the lair. Though he'll try, Bowser will be unable to launch fireballs at you. With this handy trick (for those of you who find Bowser a little too difficult), you'll be able to beat him with a reduced chance of being hit. Thanks go out to misheymd@muohio.edu for the great info! I. BOOM BOOM ============= Every World, 1-8 Colors - Different shades of brown/red Special Abilities - Sometimes can fly, but you'll never notice ;) Boom Boom is the guardian of all the Mini-Fortresses throughout the land, and also several air/water ships in the Dark Land. He looks like a Koopa with a spiny shell on his back. He runs back and forth waving his arms, perhaps in an attempt to scare you or something. As if it needs to be said, Boom Boom is the easiest boss/mini-boss in the entire game. In each fortress his room is set up differently, so I'm not going to bother to draw it. 1. Jump on him three times. Each time you jump on him, he will smoosh down, then pop back up in the pouncing position, and then jump in the air a short distance and begin his little game again, but running faster. When he jumps in the air after a blow, jump back on top of him and he'll have no time to react, or do anything for that matter. Sometimes, after the first hit, he'll pop back up with wings on, but if you follow the above strategy, he won't have time to use them. 2. 5 fireball will kill him if you have fire power. 3. One hammer if you have the Hammer Bros. suit is enough to defeat him. J. HAMMER BROS. ================ World 1 - Grass Land World 3 - Water Land World 5 - Sky Land World 6 - Ice Land World 7 - Pipe Land World 8 - Dark Land Colors - Green Special Abilites - Throw hammers The Hammer Bros. are a common enemy in Super Mario Bros., and have come back since then in Super Mario Bros. 3. They can be found all over the place in the game and can be found on either the map or in a level. They are more of a mini-boss than anything, and are quite easy to defeat. They will stand atop a ledge or on the ground and throw hammers at you in and upward arc. They usually appear in a pair in an area like this: _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ |_|_|_|_|_|_|_|_|_|_| _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ |_|_|_|_|_|_|_|_|_|_| __________________________________ 1. Jump on their heads once to defeat them. You must hit each one seperately. 2. If you have the Fire Flower, you can throw one fireball at each and thats all it takes. 3. Use Starman on them for a quick kill. Simply run right into them. 4. Use their own weapon against them, hammers. With the Hammer Bros. suit, you can get rid of them fast. 5. The Super Leaf and the Tanooki suit both provide you with a tail. Use it on them and with one whack they'll be out of your way. K. BOOMERANG BROS. =================== World 1 - Grass Land World 2 - Desert Land World 8 - Dark Land Colors - Green, Blue Special Abilities - Throws boomerangs Like their counterparts, the Boomerang Bros. are not widely considered a boss, but they (at least one of them) are seen at the end of the Tank in the Dark Land. They look almost exactly like the Hammer Bros., but they can be different colors. For example, at the end of the Tank, the Boomerang Bro there is blue. The Boomerang Bros. are commonly seen all over the game. They have different settings, as they are many places within the game, so it's hard to put your finger on exactly what their surroundings and terrain look like, but when you run into one on the map, it looks like this: ___________ | | __________________| |__ Like I said, they are in different places, so don't always expect this. 1. You can simply jump and hit him on the head once and he'll be defeated. 2. One fireball will put him down. 3. Simply run into him with Starman and he'll be down for the count. 4. If you have the Super Leaf or the Tanooki suit, you can hit him with your tail to kill him. 5. If for some reason or another you have the Hammer Bros. suit, you can throw a hammer at him. Just one is all it takes. L. FIRE BROS. ============== World 2 - Desert Land World 8 - Dark Land Colors - Red Special Abilities - Spit fire The Fire Bros. only appear in one part of the game besides the Bros. theme stage in World 8. If you find them in Desert Land, as they're in a secret location, you are in for quite a battle if you're not prepared. They spit fireballs at you that are identical to yours. They even act the same way. They look like the other Bros. characters except that they are red. 1. Jump on their heads to kill them. 2. Use their own weapon, firepower, against them. One fireball apiece. 3. Charge them with the help of Starman. 4. Use the tail of the Super Leaf or Tanooki suit. One whack to kill them. 5. Throw hammers at them with the Hammer Bros. suit. Like the rest, only one hammer is needed to do them in. M. SLEDGE BROS. ================ World 4 - Giant Land World 8 - Dark Land Colors - Green Special Abilities - Throw hammers; can shake the ground and stun you. The Sledge Bros. are only found in Giant Land, except for the Bros. stage in the Dark Land, and all they are are huge verions of the Hammer Bros. They act exactly the same, but because of their size, whenever they land after a jump the earth will shake, and if you are standing on it, you will be stunned. 1. 6. In their mini-stages in Big Land, their are two clouds at the top of the screen. If you manage to get up there, you will be free from harm for the most part and you can wait until the perfect moment to attack. One thing to take note of is that if you find any type of Bros. on the map, if you use the Music Box, they will fall asleep and you can pass over them without fighting them. ******************************************************************************* IV.
