Game Story, taken directly from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game instruction Booklet Welcome to the crime infested boroughs of New York, where one wrong look at the right person can be your last. But the turtles sleep contentedly, for they've made Manhattan a safer place for all. Especially since they've sent Shredder to the local landfill. Or so they think. While visions of pepperoni pizza dance through their heads, the turtles' worst nightmares blast into Earth's atmosphere. Two intergalactic bounty hunters have been attracted by the price that Shredder has placed on the half shell heroes' heads. Shredder's alive and looking for payback! Although the turtles tossed Shredder into the metal jaws of a garbage huck, his titanium battle helmet protected his maniacal mind from being mauled. Upon awakening on a seabound garbage ship, Shredder vowed vengeance. After floating back to land on a pile of non-biodegradable Styrofoam cups, Shredder began training a new breed of Foot Soldier. One that is better trained in the lethal art of Taekwondo and one that will make the ultimate sacrifice to defend his leader. But that was only the beginning. Shredder journeyed throughout the universe, via his Translocation Matrix Beam, recruiting the top bounty hunters. He chose two. Tora is a ten foot, half ton lizard beast who, in two-thousand years, has never known defeat. Journeying from the distant ice planet of Traglodoon he has come to Earth needing only one weapon, his devastating jaws. His partner in cosmic crime is Shogun, an inhabitant of Sector Six in the Oead Star Zone, and the mastermind behind the ultimate Galactic Sword. But that's not all, folks. Shredder and his professional punnishers have again captured April O'Neil and plan to use her as turtle bate. Fail to save this lovely journalist, and that's all she wrote! Shredders ten levels of terror, with a lethal leader at the end of each one, are the deadliest the turtles have ever had to face. Even if you survive the eight action riddled arcade arenas, you still must contend with the two new unbeatable bounty hunter stages. But the turtles stand ready to fight through this shell squashing mess. For Splinter has taught these turtles to fight with the ferocity of a lion. Controls The controls to this game are very simple. Here they are as follows: A Button: Makes the selection on the Turtle Select screen, makes selected turtle jump. B Button: Attack. Press A and B almos simultaneously to perform the Jumping Kick. D-Pad: Moves turtles. Select: Select one or two players. Start: Starts game, pauses game. Walkthrough Stage 1: The Apartment The first level of the game throws you right into an attempt to rescue the fair...journalist? April O'Neil from her burning apartment. You can hurl yourself into the flames if you wish, but they won't hurt you. But I digress. Take out the soldiers as you move along. Be extra careful of the ones carrying what appear to be vacuum cleaners. Believe me, they're not. If you try to keep your distance from these guys, you'll discover that, unless somebody's found a way to turn a vacuum into a machine gun, those most definitely aren't vacuum cleaners. I advise trying to get in close an hit them. This will cut down on the possibility of their firing on you, since once they do you're likely to take a pounding. Note: The scoring system in this game REALLY sucks. You get an extra life every 200000 points, so that means you have to kill...200000 enemies. Yes, you get just one point for every enemy, whether it be a boss or a normal soldier. Anyway, be careful when you reach the stairs. Hey! Where the hell did all these bowling balls come from!? Don't bother trying to destroy them. You can't. Also, they won't harm the soldiers. Avoid them. Soon you'll reach the landing and break down a door. More soldiers, so take them out. Then it's more stairs and more bowling balls. After that you'll be on the same floor as April's apartment. Fight off some foot soldiers and you'll reach her apartment. Before you can enter though, you face three Roadkill Rodneys. I believe they're machines. They have a metallic sound when damaged. Destroy them to enter April's apartment. You'll then hear her scream. Kill more enemies. Then there's an earthquake and a familiar foe rises from beneath the floor. Boss: Rocksteady Give a guy a break! This mutated rhino appears as one of the early bosses of just about every TMNT game there is, with the one known exception (to me at least), of the Radical Rescue on Gameboy. He's got a machine gun, so avoid that as much as possible. Jump/kick his shins and get away. This is the best way to go, since most other attacks leave you open to retaliation. If he backs off and puts away his gun, be careful. He'll charge at you. If you're using a Game Genie, you can just get in and whack him. After enough hits, he'll die. After Rocksteady bites the dust, Shredhead escapes with April O'Neil! Noooo! Stage 2: The Streets of New York City Ah, I just love the music in this stage! You'll make your way through the streets of NYC, fighting off soldiers. Some jump out of windows and attack you, and a few have explosives, so be on your guard. Grab any pizzas you find, since they'll heal you. Eventually, it's time for the boss. Boss: Beabop This mutated warthog appears in all the games except Radical Rescue and possibly Turtles in Time (I wouldn't know about that one). If you want my honest opinion, I think the same caste of characters is getting more and more tired with each game. I wonder if Shredder and Krang ever wake up in the morning and wonder if they'd have been better off in a different profession? Anyway, unlike his mutated comrade, Beabop carries a laser gun, but he's not too hard. Hit him and avoid his attacks and eventually he'll die. Stage 3: The Sewers Time to descend into the sewers, but not for a nice long period of R&R. You've got unwanted guests! The music's pretty cool, too. Anyway, destroy the soldiers and proceed through the sewers. Eventually you'll reach the boss. Boss: Baxter Stockman (human form) Easy. He hovers in a machine which can't harm you directly. It releases mousers which can easily be killed. Just hit his transport enough times to destroy it. After this level, get ready to walk in a Winter Wonderland (yeah right). Stage 4: The Snowfield Walkin' in a winter wonderland...oops, maybe not. First off, avoid the falling ice chunks. You can't kill them. Jumping here is a very bad idea. Just run. Then it's a few soldiers, so deal with them. What the hell!? What's up with these Public Service vehicles!? Yeah, you'll have to avoid the snowplow, and no, you can't kill it. Then you'll meet Frosty the Hitman. These guys are snowmen who fire heatseeking missiles from their carrot noses. Avoid them, but the snowmen themselves are nothing to worry about. Oh,and be careful of some of the snow patches. Some conceal manholes, and yes, you will be harmed if you fall. Another thing to be careful of is the oil drums in this level. If you strike one and don't jump away, you'll be caught by the explosion and take some damage. However, if you do it right, you can rid yourself of a few troublesome Foot Soldiers if any are in the blast radius. Also, be careful of any cars in the garage. Some can start moving without any warning, effectively ending your little adventure. Then it's more soldiers, another snowplow and some more falling ice. Next it's the boss. Boss: Tora This is the first of Shredder's new allies. He's responsible for the radical change in the weather. Whack him and avoid his attacks. He throws some of those falling ice blocks from earlier. You can jump/kick him if you want, and if you know how you can hit him with a constant stream of attacks, but it's very difficult not to mess up at some point when you try it this way. Anyway, after the battle, you'll destroy the weather changing machine. Stage 5: The Parking Garage Ah, it's the classic TMNT theme song. In this area, you'll find more garden variety soldiers. So dispose of them. There are also more of the oil drums from the prior level. Handle them the way you did before. Hit them and jump away before they explode. Then you also have to contend with some soldiers who obviously didn't pay attention in Drivers' Ed. Avoid being run over, and be careful once the cars are past you. Some of them hide Housekeepers with there Vacuum Cleaners of Destruction. As mentioned above, those guys can be a real pain in the ass. Eventually, you'll reach the boss. Boss: Baxter Stockman (insect form) Remember the cartoon? Stockman was turned into a fly by Krang. He's got a blaster ray, and he's not afraid to use it. Hit him however you like (jump attacks work well), and he'll eventually die with a pathetic groan and an equally pathetic splat. Stage 6: The Freeway This stage has some of the best music. Just dispose of the soldiers and avoid being blown up by the ones with the explosives. You also have to avoid being run over by the motorcycles and cars. No boss. Stage 7: The Skateboard Speedway Ah, groovy music! Anyway, the main enemies here are the helicopters that fire at you with machine guns and drop bombs on you. Jump kick each one a few times to blow it up. After all of them are gone it's a bunch of soldiers. Dispose of them. Then it's more choppers, so destroy them as well. Then cruise on down to the Enemy Base. No boss. Stage 8: Enemy Base Ah, the TMNT theme again. Oh, and that's not a pig those guys are carrying, it's Master Splinter! You have your average foot soldiers, as well as some new arrivals. Most are pretty harmless (that is easy to deal with), until the technodrome module makes its appearance. Introducing the Tubular Transports. These robotic mosquitos are a real pain in the ass. Jumping kicks are the best way to deal with them, but still, they're annoying. Eventually it's time for the boss. Boss: Granitor When he first appears he'll take a moment to look at his watch (got a date with your girlfriend or something?) Use this to your advantage, but be careful. He's got a flamethrower, so don't just stand around. Hit him and run. Keep it up until he dies. Note: The noise bosses from here on out make when they die is pretty amusing. Stage 9: Shogun's Hideout This one's annoying because of what you meet about halfway through. You have some new arrivals, so deal with them. The most annoying enemies are the two Shogun Tigers. Fortunately, you only meet two in the entire game and you only meet one at a time. It takes at least six hits to kill one, and only regular attacks work with any consistancy. Easy enough, right? Not entirely. They're a pain in the ass to hit. Still, after enough hits, the tigers will burn up. Be careful of the mechanical scorpions, thin paper floors and spikes as well. Then it's time for the boss. Boss: Shogun His attacks are a force to be reckoned with, but his energy guage isn't exactly stellar. Just avoid as many of his attacks as you can and unload on him. I just love the grunt of agony when they die! Then it's time for the final stage! Stage 10: The Technodrome The music here is cool. Most of the enemies are ones you've encountered before. The two new arrivals are the ice columns that shoot up and spray ice at you. Avoid these or you'll be temporarily paralyzed. This leaves you open to thrashing. Next you have what appear to be breasts mounted on the walls. Don't be deceived. They shoot electricity and can also electrocute you if you touch 'em. Avoid all these hazards and collect some pizza if you find any (the very last piece is just after the elevator and before the room full of Housekeeping soldiers). Then it's time for the boss. Boss: General Trag He has a rocket launcher. After a few shots he'll reload. This is the ideal time to hit him. Just hit him with a jumping kick or regular attack and get away. Whatever works for you, just be careful, especially if you're low on lives or continues. After enough punishment, he'll die. Boss: Krang It's everybody's favorite intergalactic brain! No, not Mother Brain, you idiot, Krang! Just kidding. He emerges from the portal to Dimension X. Once again, he has a body, just like in that one episode of the cartoon where Shredder had the antimutation ray. The music in this battle is the same as it was in the cartoon episode in question. He usually launches kicks at you when you're close, and if you keep your distance he'll usually kneel and launch his hand at you. No, you can't destroy it. He also has lasers that shoot out of his eyes, so avoid these. Sometimes you'll see him flex his muscles in a victory pose (usually when he knocks you down). This provides a very brieff moment to hit him, but he doesn't often do this more than...say once. He's sometimes been known to do it three times in a row, but this is very rare, and I mean very. One thing though, you'll want to try to hold onto as many men as you can. You're gonna need 'em. Oh yeah, and have you ever heard a brain make alarm noises before it blows up? Not that brains usually blow up, but... Final Boss: Shredder He follows Krang in from Dimension X. The music is cool, and shredder's not nearly as tough as Krang. He can multiply himself though, and this can be confusing. Usually but not always, the real Shredhead will move to the back once he clones. Concentrate on that one. If he moves to the far end of the screen, try to get behind him, because he'll unleash a blast of electricity that turns you back into a baby turtle, so it's an instant kill. If you knock off his helmet, A. it's a sign that the fight is nearly over, and B. he'll lose his ability to clone himself and he won't be able to use his instant death attack. About a dozen more hits will do him in. Then watch as the technodrome explodes. Note: the following information will spoil the ending, but then again you don't have to read. Ending: After you defeat Shredder, the technodrome explodes and the following text is shown: "Freaked the Foots, mangled the Mousers and totalled the Technodrome. That's...Turtle Power!! But, what about the Shredder and Krang...!? Burned to toast? Vaporized to milkshake? Or...escaped to Dimension X? Until we know, none of us can sleep safely in our beds...er, shells. Then we see a skyline with a blimp flying across the sky, and the word Congratulations! Is shown, followed by the credits, which are accompanied by pictures of the turtles and by some really groovy music. Note: dancing in front of the TV or computer screen is permisible here, as this music is pretty damn groovy. Just try to avoid doing it if there's anyone else in the house with you...unless you like being considered weird. Then after the credits it shows a picture of Shredder and it says " ha ha ha ha..." Then it shows the Game Over screen. After this, the game restarts. Closing Review This is my favorite TMNT game. The controls are smooth (although the jumping kick can take some practice. The gameplay is just your average beat 'em up. The music is some of my favorite from the NES, and definitely better than the first TMNT game by a long shot. The story takes place after the ening of the first TMNT movie, since that's the only story I know of where Shredder was tossed into a garbage truck. Definitely give this game a try. It's worth the money or the download if you're an emuholic. The Konami Code Like all Konami games, this one features what has come to be known as the Konami Code, since it appears in nearly all Konami games. It's been changed throughout its incarnations, and this game is no exception. Its effects also vary depending on the game. Here, it'll give you your maximum number of lives (ten), and allow you to select the stage you start on. To access this nifty feature, press the following at the title screen. B, A, B, A, Up, Down, B, A, Left, Right, B, A, and start. If done correctly, you'll get a black screen with numbers on it after you select your favorite turtle. Use Left or Right to select the desired stage, then press A to make your choice. Contact Information As always, suggestions are welcome. Send 'em on over to B-peterson@earthlink.net. Note: Please don't E-mail me to ask if you can post my FAQs on your web site. I get enough of those E-mails as it is, not to mention the occasional flame E-mail and porn mail. Oh, and if anyone out there sees one of my FAQs on somebody's website and it doesn't have my name and E-mail on it, let me know! Give me the offender's address and I'll stroll on over and have a chat with the arrogant git. Credits There are a few people I want to thank. First, and most importantly I think, Jeff "CJayC" Veasey), for posting my FAQs on Gamefaqs. Second, thanks to Konami for making such a great game. Third, Melzo McPhun for writing the guide I used as a sort of reference (don't worry, I did my best not to copy your work). Finally, thanks to all of you who E-mail me about my FAQs. Hope you enjoy this latest one.
