INTRODUCTION G0100 =============================================================================== Welcome to 'Wagyan Land 2' for the NES, a platformer released by Namco in 1990. The guide is pretty close to complete, although there is one minor path I left out as well as some better structure of the different paths one can take later on in the game. There might also be more secret warps I have not found yet. Update (1.01): Seems I can't find a working copy of this to figure out the alternative path. The translated version has this bug and the non-translated version seems to have a bug in the 2nd level boss when the timer starts out at 00 instead of 30. Thus if you play a working copy, either find your own way or use the path I describe, sorry to say. Suggestions, comments or errors - tell me about it. Enjoy! =============================================================================== 02.) BASICS G0200 =============================================================================== The game continues right where the first one left off. Do not worry if you haven't played it, as the game will explain any kind of story to you. Controls: ````````` A Jump B Fire START Un-/Pause Collect four power icons (they look like you but smaller) to become invincible as well as being able to kill enemies. It only last for around 10 seconds and afterwards the power bar goes back to nil. Then you restart a collecting again. These power icons keep over to the next stage, it could be a good strategy to leave it at 3 bars so collecting one more starts the rampage mode, this is useful for tough sections but you might now know this unless having played quite a few times before. Usually you lose a life as soon as you get hit by an enemy even just once, so don't let this happen. You shoot a few words that will stun the enemy. They will not be able to move for several seconds in which you can touch them. The more power you have on the bard, the bigger (i.e. longer) the stun effect will be. There are ? and ! icons that you can shoot to get a treasure which could just be money, but also a very useful powerup. See the item list for more details. ! is always the same item whereas ? will be random. The game starts with 2 extra lives and every 20,000 points you get one more. Beating a boss perfectly will give you a big bonus of 7 extra lives and it is a big boost to beat the game, naturally. Getting this on the earlier bosses is easier so try to do it then. Display: ```````` The main game has a small menu at the bottom. It displays the number of powers you have collected in this level, the amounts of lives left as well as you point score. Score: `````` Every few steps you already get 50 points for simply progressing in the level. 500 points are awarded for collecting a power icon. The '!' items are worth 1,000 points and '?' items are 500. If you have collected enough power icons you can kill enemies for 100 a piece. Items: `````` ____________________________________________________________________________ | Item | Effect | |----------------------+-----------------------------------------------------| | Propeller Tail | Jump and continuously press A to descend slower. | |----------------------+-----------------------------------------------------| | Invincibility Potion | Become invincible for ~10 seconds and walk through | | | enemies. | |----------------------+-----------------------------------------------------| | Power-Up | Adds 1 chunk to the power bar. | |----------------------+-----------------------------------------------------| | $ | 500 / 1000 points | ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ 2-Player Mode: `````````````` This is essentially the same game, and you take turn when one player dies. Player 1 starts and once he is done, Player 2 takes over. It's more fun than just watching I suppose but doesn't hold any more strategies than playing the 1 Player mode. Cheats: ``````` Game still too hard for you? I can imagine. If you don't want to die with a single touch all the time, set address 00B8 to 72 for invincibility. =============================================================================== 03.) WALKTHROUGH G0300 =============================================================================== Prologue: ````````` Get used to the controls, then go right. You get 400 points for just walking this short stretch and meeting your friend. Forest 1: ```````` Start out by jumping over the small pink pig, then collect the 1st power icon. Jump over the chasm on the tall platform. Avoid the bird and the pink pig until you find the ! note. Underneath the next bird is the 2nd power icon followed shortly by the 3rd. There is a '?' coming up, and the 4th power icon is just beyond. Now power through the rest of the level without worrying about the enemies. BOSS: Kangaroo There are 40 numbers on the display grid. The game starts by asking for 1. The first player to get there and presses the A button gets a point. You need 20 points to beat it. It moves rather slow so you could potentially get all 40 but it doesn't matter if you miss out on any, as you can simply plan ahead and go for the next few numbers instead. You get 500 points for each bar you manage to get. Forest 2: ````````` Jump on the first logs and stun the bird enemy on the next. Jump over there and grab the 1st power icon in the air. The 2nd one is just after a few more logs, and after an '!'. Dodge the spiked ball, then hit it to kill the birds on the logs. Jump on the head sticking out of the log to stun every foe on screen. The next few logs are all empty but soon a few blue worms will pop out from the trees above. Do not forget about the 3rd power icon just above. Soon another spiked ball comes along, use it to kill the nearby enemies. The 4th power icon is high up in the air after a bird flies along. Grab it and then run through the rest of the level. Lake: ````` If you don't keep on moving then you sink and die. The 1st power icon is just ahead, then shoot the pink pig and jump off it to reach the branch. Get the propeller and continue onwards. When you reach the frog, hit it when it is in the air. Jump on it to reach the 2nd power icon high up there. Continue either at the top or bottom. Bottom is safer but the top has a spiked ball you can use if you wish. There is a '?' icon the bottom followed by the 3rd power icon so you want to go at the water level anyhow. Soon you will reach the cave. BOSS: Gorilla This is a simple memory a game. The gorilla starts by uncovering two cards and then it is your turn. Flip them over. When you notice you have seen the matching one before, uncover both get a point. The character that gets a pair may take another turn. You only need 6 wins out of 12 whereas the green guy is worth 2 points if you cover it. You have 30 seconds for each turn. There are certain patterns on the board you should try to look out for. If there are two matching cards in one corner then they might also be the same style in another and so on. Cave: ```` This is pretty straightforward, there are just gaps to jump between. The bees will zone in one you so be careful. If you only collected three power icons in the last level then you have the 4th one straight at the beginning and it helps a lot to clear this level. Road: ````` Grab the 1st power icon at the top right off the start. Stun the snake and take note that the sunflowers cannot be stunned. Jump over them. Shortly after the second sunflower there is a 2nd power icon as well. Watch out for worms dropping from the sky, and there is a hard to see power icon in the ocean line. The 4th power is icon is just on the next platform but it will only last a few seconds as you are already near the end of the level. BOSS: Fairy This is kind of hard if you don't read Japanese. The icons represent words, naturally, but the word chain that is being build depends on the word the fairy picks. Continue the chain as you can. Note that a picture can mean more than one word. The picture of the octopus for example can mean "Octopus" and "Eight Legs" for example. There is a time limit of 50 seconds, each wrong guess takes away 5 seconds but each correct guess adds 10. You win if there are no more words to chain when it's the opponent's turn or if you run out of time and have already chained more than 8 words. Ocean 1: ```````` Do not fall into the water, it's an instant KO. Start out by collecting the Invincibility Potion, then jump along until you reach the 1st and 2nd power icon up in the air. Those trampolines will make you jump further quickly if you feel that's necessary. The level is pretty short. Desert: ``````` There are enemies hiding in the sand, they pop out slowly and well in advance so don't worry too much. The 3rd and 4th power potions are actually just ahead which makes this level pretty short. BOSS: Cobra Another memory game, only this time you need to listen and match the cards with the same tunes rather than just looking at pictures. You have 30 seconds per turn. There are more than one matching card for each, even guessing should get you the 8 required to win the game. Mountain: ````````` Precise jumping is required for some jumps now, but soon you will get the propeller to help out. There is also the 1st power icon after a rather long chasm. Watch out for the bird coming in from below. The 2nd power icon is just in front of the trampoline. After the second trampoline is the 3rd power icon high up in the air. It gets tricky to avoid enemies as well as jumping from block to block. The third trampoline requires a long jump and then the use of the propeller in the air to make it across to the moving platform. On the other side, the 4th power icon awaits. Now don't go all crazy and dash to the end, because you will most likely fall to your death within seconds. Take it easy, do small jumps but at least you can disregard the foes around the area. Without the power dash there would be a lot of annoying birds swooping in from below. You have plenty of time to finish the level without losing the invincibility. BOSS: Lion Card matching memory card, see the Gorilla for some more description if you forgot already. Jungle: ``````` Again, don't fall into the water. This is not like the forest. Instead jump to the next tree stumps. Soon you will see the 1st power icon already. When you find the ! icon, jump up and turn it into the propeller and grab it from underneath. Continue until you reach the moving platform that goes in a circle. The 2nd power icon is just above. The third power icon is between the next set of moving platforms. You need to jump from the first to the second to reach it. There is also an Invincibility Potion in the ! to help you through the rest of the level. BOSS: Flower? Word chain game again, read up on the Fairy. Loch Ness: `````````` There are a few things to note. First there are a couple of power icons coming up straight away which may already fill up your bar to complete this level extremely quickly. Second, you need to jump from crocodile to crocodile to get across and obviously not when their jaws are open. If you are too slow then there is also a wave that will knock you out. Loch Ness Monster: `````````````````` You are actually on the monster itself, which explains why the ground is moving up and down. There is a power icon near the start and it continues like that with 2 more. There isn't much new about his apart of the moving ground, and perhaps those jumping dinos. Near the end there are larger gaps between the humps as you make your way across the upper body. Once you jump over its head the boss will swim along. BOSS: Shark Number matching once again, read up on the Kangaroo if you forgot how to play. This time the opponent is a little faster than before. Interlude: `````````` Take a few steps and meet the Loch Ness Monster Jr. It will take you across the ocean and you get lots of bonus points for simply doing nothing. Ranch: `````` Nothing new here, and you might get the power bar full soon to race through it anyway. Some enemies are now bigger versions of what you have seen before, but of course they still get stunned with one hit. At the end of the level jump on the fat platforms to reach top. Waterfall: `````````` Reach the next platforms by jumping across the gaps. There are two power icons near the beginning. Make sure you stun enemies before you get across, and not to leave them in mid-air where you need to jump through. At the end of the lake you need to start climbing up, and then at the top the level goes left! Keep jumping across till you reach the waterfall with the moving platform. Watch out for the large frog, it's easy to avoid him by jumping back on the previous platform and then continuing. The second frog can be jumped over as it will just go underneath. If you aren't too dizzy from the waterfall yet, make it cross and climb up some more. At the top it goes right once again. Do a good jump off the trampoline or use the propeller you just picked up, then quickly jump off the clouds as they drop. Another good trampoline jump takes you across the two large worms and to the boss. BOSS: Toad? Card matching again, I think you should know how to play by now. However, the time limit is only 20 seconds now. Ice Lake: ````````` The icy surface will make it harder to control your movements. Most enemies are snow covered as well and not to mention that you need to unfreeze the power icons with your verbal attack. Before you reach the longish lake, take the propeller from the ! icon and then jump across when it's safe. When one of the ice drops hit you then you get frozen for few seconds. If you are over water then you fall down to your death. Take the upper route to the "Ice Cave", or the lower Route to the "Ice Ramps". ************* *UPPER ROUTE* ************* Ice Ramps: `````````` This level is so much fun if you have a full power bar. I have even managed to get two and it is probably meant to be like that. Start out by staying on the blue line, as the other one has lots of snowmen. Slide along while you avoid the enemies. Once in a while you get to jump on moving platforms. The falling ice drops will freeze you for a few seconds. BOSS: Polar Bear The number game, with a little twist. Not only is this guy much better than any previous opposition but you first have to get select all odd numbers and then all even numbers starting from 2. Crystal Cave: ````````````` A vertical cave, start climbing up for power icons. Some enemies will drop down but disappear when they miss. After you have dodged the penguin, a statue will create platforms. You need to jump up. Repeat this process twice more, the last one is a little hard. Do not touch the statue itself! BOSS: Angel Word chain. 30 seconds. Icons are replaced with new ones so the chain won't run out as quickly. Interlude: `````````` Unfreeze your friend, the dragon. He will take you across. After you finish the short level you meet the Owl. It offers you a sonic boom in exchange for your verbal attack. Skip to "Trees". ************* *LOWER ROUTE* ************* Ice Cave: ````````` The snow falling is very hazardous. There are also annoying bird-like creatures that swoop around. BOSS: Thunder Kid Rock, Paper, Scissors. You know it perhaps, most people do. Rock beats Scissors, Paper beats Rock and Scissors beat Paper. The same will be a tie. You turn over a card and try to beat the over person with it. The game continues until all cards are gone. You need to have won at least 6 games. Volcano: ```````` You get stunned every 30 seconds or so, as the volcano rumbles. When you are already in the air then the jump will complete first. Another fork in the path. Go up for the "Wood Bridge" and down for the "Stone Path". Wood Bridge: ```````````` Some notes. The dark wood will break within a few seconds. Don't stand on them for too long. The balloons will pop around half way up, so plan ahead when getting across. There is a potion near the end to help complete this. Stone Path: ``````````` The shells will try to zone in, but aren't as stupid as those pink squids that just drop down into the floor. When you reach the trampoline, make a good jump to get past all the spiked balls. It might require some luck to get through them unharmed. On the other side, stun the spiders and use them as stepping stones to reach the boss. BOSS: Armadillo Card matching game, 20 seconds per round. Horizontal Cave: ```````````````` Just continue up this short level. Most enemies that drop will just go by and fall to never be seen again. The spiders have some rapid movements, stun them to get by. The rat near the end jumps so stun in from far away. You will meet an owl that offers you a sonic boom instead of your verbal attacks. Trees: `````` Whether or not you took the sonic boom, you need to find a particular spot and shoot it a half dozen times to get warped away. This stop is a little tricky to explain. The level just loops around and there are like 4 sections. The spot is just on the right of a tree, and there is a small tree stump underneath. The bushes also peak just before a small dip. Shoot this spot from the right and you will notice it makes some strange icons. Shoot it a few more times to continue. Ruins: `````` With the sonic boom you can now defeat enemies, but not stun them anymore. So stay away from the spiked balls and take out anyone in the way. Yes, you can even defeat those uberslick sunflowers now. At the end you are given the choice to take a time clock or not. It is used for the mini-game at the boss. Bridge to Smile Tree: ````````````````````` This is the first level that you actually get moved along as it scrolls automatically. I do not recommended the power dash here as you are too fast and might just die by accident. Save up three bars for later if you can. Those tiny platforms occupied by the shells are emptied if you propeller down slowly. There is a warp to a ruin level on one of the platforms at the ground, you will find it by shooting. Otherwise skip to the Smile Tree Cave. The heli mode adds quite a benefit so it's worth the quick route. Helicopter Ruins: ````````````````` At the end of the level you get a battery for your helicopter tail. Instead of jumping you can now fly by holding down the A button. Helicopter Platforms: ````````````````````` With your new helicopter skills you can get around this level with ease. You get the time clock at the end. Smile Tree Cave: ```````````````` Well if you have heli mode then this is pretty easy. Apart of a few pink balls and the occasional spiked ball the enemies are not much thread. If you don't then the jumping required is tough. It's quite funny how you can actually get stuck in this level if those firered wagyan stun you forever, you cannot move, but you do not die either. Reset the game, at this point in the game?! BOSS: *THE* Boss. Card Matching Game, once more. 20 seconds for each turn. THEN of course it is not finished yet. The "fight" moves on to the chain game, and you have 90 seconds on the clock thanks to your time stopper from earlier, right?!
