This faq is based on makoknight's translation. you can get it here: http://www.geocities.com/makoknight.geo/ II. HOW TO PLAY Most things in the game are accomplished by running into things. That includes talking to people, teleporting by statues, and combat. Enemies must run into from an angle. That means from the side and behind. Should you run into any enemies from head on, it should also be done from an angle. Meaning you should be slightly above or below the enemy when you run into them from head on. If you do directly head on, you need to have high defense otherwise you will take damage. Should you in turn be hit from the side and behind, you likely perish. The most important fact, in fact so important that it deserves its own line; is that you can heal by not moving. This can be accomplished by not moving. You can heal anywhere except for a boss battle, where you'll need it the most. III. WALKTHROUGH ESTERIA (I don't think they every name the city in the nes version) First head to Pim's. It's a house in the north. Buy the SapphireRing for 1000 gold. Head to the bar in the northeastern corner of the town. Talk to the loner, and he'll give you 1500 gold for it. Head to the shops located to the south, and buy a sword and a shield. Now go out and kill enemies until you have 400 gold, enough for the armor. Once you've equipped everything, head to the house surrounded by water in the southeast corner of the town. Answer yes and Sara will give you the crystal. Afterwards head out of town. Spend an hour or so here leveling up. Then head over the bridge and take the first possible exit to east. You are now in Zepic. ZEPIC Head to the house in the northwest corner. The woman inside will give you the Shrine Key. Then head to the elder's house in the middle of the town. Apparantly, the silver bell of stolen. After all this, head north. The thieves hidout lies to east of here, across some ropes, but that isn't important right now. SHRINE ENTRANCE Go to the glowing statue on the left and press up. The Ring Mail lies the immediate left of here. The Ruby lies in the southeast corner, get it and head to the northwest one. Past the door lies a boss. BOSS BATTLE: Magician As befits the first boss battle, he isn't hard provided you watch yourself. He'll phase in, lauch fireballs in a compass pattern: north, east, south, west, and diagonally. Then phase out again. Run around and try to anticipate where he's going to phase in If he's close enough, attack him from the corner, and dart out again, making sure to dodge his fireballs. He'll go down in no time. SHRINE PART 1 It's a new area with whole new monsters. Take the time to level up again. Then head in a southeasternly direction, and take a path that winds toward the middle. Get the Treasure Chest Key. Then head to the left, and cross the steps. Enter the first room your come across. Get the prison key. Head back up and head to the northern section of the map. You'll notice a jail cell. Enter and talk the girl. Head back to the area with the prison key. Take the next room. Wind your way to the left and get the Mask of the Eyes. Head back and go northeast. Get the Silver Bell. Finally head down. SHRINE PART 2 It's a new area again. You know what that means. Yep level up again. Head left and go up and get the Ivory Key. Then head to the southeast corner and and take the right statue. Get the Marble Key. Go back and the take the statue in the left side of the map. head to the next statue. Take the right doorway and get the necklace. Take the statue. Continue until you come unto another fork in the road. Take the right one to get the Silver Shield. Head back to the fork and go left. You'll see two statues. Take the right one. When you come out, go into the right one, or the one you came out of. Go left, and head up to face the boss. CENTIPEDE Ah, this reminds of the Legend of Zelda, and this would be a rip-off of that game, but Ys came first. So Zelda's the rip-ff. Hah, so there! And just like in Zelda, you have to hit its tail. Let it tay fairly close to you, when it turns away from you, whack its tail. Repeat until it's dead. Afterwards, you'll have the first book of Ys!!! Now backtrack your way out. Head back to Zepic RANDOM HAPPENINGS Return the Silver Bell to the elder of Zepic. Head to the Aunt, who'll tell you to talk to the Tree. Exit the town, and cross the bridge directly in front of you. Head over the next bridge. Go East until you hit 4 statues. Take the southeast one. Take the next statue. Head west and you'll see a lake. Head over to the small indention with the green spot and push toward the lake. A fairy will come out and ask you to get its staff. Head back to the Esteria. Check the right well. It's the Staff of Sarana! Head over to Sara's house. Sob! She was offed while you were off rescuing pretty girls. Aren't you ashamed of yourself? Well anyways, you'll get another book of Ys. Take the staff back to the fairy, and you'll get the flute of light. head back to area between the towns. Head north, and stay on the Zepic side of the river. You'll see a suspicious area surrounded by trees, with another tree blocking the entrance. Head into it and go up. The tree will talk to you, charge your staff. Head to the right a little bit and head north. You should see a body of water. Poke around the north corner of the water. It should now disappear. Head into the right entrance.
